The pay is good, as is the pension, but the holidays are non-existent and the pension is unlikely to be used when most Torchwood officers die before they retire.
“Have you ever considered hiring more people?” Ianto suggests at some point, when the team has worked through their third weekend in a row. “Then we could have a night shift.”
“More people means more ears, more ears means we’re easier to exploit. We’re big enough as is.”
“I’m not suggesting a whole office blocking, I’m thinking 5-10 extra bodies.”
“Loose lips sink ships.”
“Well that doesn’t even make sense in that context,” Ianto muttered to himself as he began making some notes on the general work structure. If they weren’t going to hire an HR department, then he may as well make do.

Ranking the Miracucast by how good of a Doctor Who Companion they'd be.
Marinette: She'd be great at it, but she would also hate it and just want it to be over. She's tired and has no time for this shenaniganry. Please give her this chance to not be involved. 5/10
Alya: Would have SO MANY QUESTIONS. Could do very well, but I can see her veering dangerously close to Adam Mitchell territory. Careful there, Alya. 7/10
Adrien: Yes. 10/10
Nino: I think he'd be a decent TARDIS passenger, but he's the type that'd be part of an ensemble. Wouldn't work as well as a solo companion. 4/10
Chloe: Sorry Chloe fans, but no. The Doctor can pull a redemption arc out of anyone, but they also have no patience for bullcrap. It's just not happening no matter how much I want it to. 1/10
Sabrina: I think she would be great, but the fandom would not like her as a companion. 6/10
Mylene: Yeah, she would not like it. 0/10
Ivan: If Mylene isn't going, then neither is he. 0/10
Rose: Would be absolutely hilarious due to her name alone. Accompanying a Classic Doctor might be better for her. 7/10
Juleka: I don't care what you say she would be excellent and the fandom would love her. Ironically would probably fit better with a NuWho Doctor. 10/10
Kim: The Doctor does not want Kim in the TARDIS. Kim has been in the TARDIS at least once, and the Doctor has vowed that it will be the last time. They're wrong. 4/10
Max: The Doctor would ADORE Markov. Max would be Markov's plus one. 7/10 by proxy
Alix: Pretty sure she already is a companion. Like. In canon. We haven't seen it but it's definitely happened, fight me. Alix/10
Nathaniel: I want to say he'd be great but in my heart I know he would be Very Stressed. Definitely would not want to travel with the Doctor, but would keep getting dragged along by his friends. The fandom would love him though. 5/10
Lila: As she is now? Absolutely not. The Doctor would despise her. -10/10, BUUUUUUT if she was picked up before Volpina (or pre-Chameleon at the latest) I think she could be redeemed like in the Scarlet Lady AU. She would be hilarious. She gives me Turlough vibes. If the Doctor can deal with Turlough and Missy then he can deal with Lila. She has the potential to be unique and have an interesting character arc compared to other companions, and let's be honest NuWho needs something unique and interesting. 8/10
Luka: Like Nino, he works better as part of ensemble. Would be an excellent supporting character for Marinette or Juleka if they were companions, or maybe be a very cool Oneshot Companion like Wilf. 3/10
Kagami: The Doctor would have their work cut out for them, because Kagami is a "stab first ask questions later" person and the Doctor doesn't vibe with that normally. Neither The Doctor nor Kagami would be happy with this arrangement. So naturally Kagami's sole season would be one of the best in the entire show. 9/10
Marc: He would travel with either the Second or Thirteenth Doctors. He would do wonderfully, but his seasons would definitely be more focused on the Doctor than Marc himself. Sorry Marc. 7/10
Ondine: Is too busy keeping Kim out of trouble. And as stated previously, the Doctor does not want Kim in the TARDIS. 2/10
Felix: I just don't think it would work. Felix could definitely be a major recurring character, but somehow I can't really see him actually being a companion proper. He does get bonus points for being British. Perhaps instead of being a companion he spends his free time annoying Torchwood. 3/10
Zoe: She'd be great. But the universe would be Very Cruel to her. People will die, and she will not be happy about it. 8/10

Random Doctor Who Facts You Might Not Know, Part 17
The Valeyard told the Sixth Doctor that his Seventh incarnation was full of schemes in order to play a game that was never his to win and that his Eighth would never shake the shadow of death.
When separated from the TARDIS, the Doctor's memory usually begins to fail him.
Agatha Christie was a companion of the Eighth Doctor.
Tania Bell was placed in 107 Baker Street by Torchwood, her employer, to keep an eye out for the Doctor.
Rose was once turned into a vampire. She attacked the Ninth Doctor.
When the Eighth Doctor lies to his friends, it's obvious he's doing so because he gets a "terrified and guilty" expression on his face.
Handrel once said a single incarnation of a Time Lord can live for 10,000 years.
The Eighth Doctor once appeared on and won a television show called You Either Know It or You Don't.

The Seventh Doctor is sometimes terrified of the Third Doctor, particularly by the realization that the Leader of the British Republic in the Inferno universe is his counterpart.

This weakness could potentially also explain why the Fourth Doctor regenerated after falling a shorter distance than the Tenth Doctor did when he jumped out of a spaceship.

The original first edition cover. Reminds me of Aubrey Beardsley's controversial Yellow Book, which I'm guessing wasn't a deliberate choice. There would have been a paper cover as well, which I can't find an image of. I enjoy the lack of information this cover is giving me. It's Dracula by Bram Stoker, what more do you need to know? 5/10.

IN HIS LIZARD FASHION. Points to the illustrator of the 1919 edition for choosing this iconic scene. Minus points for the gravity-defying cape and an oddly stout, comfortable-looking Norman castle. 9/10.

It's Whitby Abbey! When you think about it's a bit odd that Dracula is so strongly associated with Whitby when not all that much of the action actually takes place there, isn't it? I think I will deduct points for Dracula standing on top of the Abbey like Jack Harkness in Torchwood. 6/10.

The first of the Lucy covers, from 1927. I have so many questions about this. Why are her boobs so pointy? Why is her arm... like that? Why does Dracula have a Hitler haircut? 4/10 but thank you for trying.

More Lucy from Arrow Books, 1974. The most important thing to know about Dracula is that Lucy has shapely legs, apparently. The low quality isn't helping, but I have further questions about this one. Is that supposed to be a stone circle in the background? What is the lump on Lucy's right-hand side? Definitely in the wrong place for a boob, but I can't see what else it could be. Further minus points for the fact that Lucy appears to have a perm. 3/10.

Dracula the dandy! From the Modern Library, 1932, though the illustration is originally from a 1928 edition. I am deeply disappointed that they didn't include the straw hat. 2/10.

The 1933 Irish language edition. The yellow eyes! The cowboy hat! The cute bat ears! The fact he seems to be standing at an 80-degree angle! The adorable wolves! The tufts of hair implying a decidedly wacky haircut! It takes the Modern Library idea and makes it BATSHIT. 12/10.

It's never a good sign when you can't tell who a book cover is supposed to represent. I mean, I'm guessing it's Dracula given the bat-cape, but I'm not sure why he's gazing out from the top of some kind of deeply troubled tree like Caspar David Friedrich meets 80s romance novels. And what, exactly, has happened to his feet? 1/10.

YES YES YES. I don't know where this cover comes from but it's the most book-accurate by far and I love it. The hairy hands, the fingernails, the moustache - why settle for less?! The knowledge that this Dracula is about to be walloped in the face by a shovel-wielding solicitor at this precise moment seals the deal. 100/10.

read the torchwood archives book today, and felt like sharing some things because this book gave me a headache (ft the ages of tw3 members and when they allegedly got recruited. "allegedly" because the consistency is bar to none and must be taken with a very large grain of salt).
tldr: information is very inconsistent and i would trust information given in the show more than from this book about timelines any day. i apologise in advance if none of this makes any sense lol
explanation under the cut cause this turned out to be much longer than i thought it would be lmaooo

these are all documents in the torchwood archives book where it says each member's date of birth (among other info) where it does state clearly that ianto is the youngest (1983) but what i Wasn't aware of was that owen was born only a year (+ 6months) before him

now this is where it gets confusing. because s1 came out in late 2006-early 2007, i assumed that that would be more or less when they were set (me when im Wrong). s1e10 (out of time) is very clearly set during/around christmas, despite coming out before christmas, and e11 coming out on christmas eve, which obviously throws the timeline off. we know s1 of tw occurs sometime during 2007 before doctor who s3e10/11 (when jack runs off to the tardis and briefly comes back to the main series), so that matches up with the dates written in the margin of the document page.
in s2e12 (fragments), it says that by that point ianto had been working for tw3 for 21 months (or it had at least been 21 months since the first time he met jack, but i feel like its safe to assume those two didn't happen that far apart), and if that happened in early 2007, it would mean that the end of s2 would be set sometime in late 2008-early 2009 which also matches up with when doctor who s4 was set, when again jack leaves and goes to the doctor (we know this is after the end of tw s2 because the only people in the hub are jack, gwen, and ianto, therefore happened after owen and tosh's deaths. also other pretty obvious things im almost definately forgetting about).
anyways all that to say that during owen's fragment (ha) of fragments, it says he met jack 4 years before late 2008/9ish, and then had spent "months" looking for jack which would set katie's death at around 2004/5, and his torchwood recruitment at mid-late 2005 but. that doesn't make any sense if in the note in the margin it says 2006.
yk what Also doesn't make any sense? tosh apparently joining tw3 in 2005 (and other things mentioned in the tw archives). because we know fragments was set in 2009 at the latest, where it states that tosh got arrested by UNIT 5 years prior, which would mean at the latest in early 2004, which again contradicts the tw archives.

tosh apparently got arrested by UNIT in early 2005ish, which would make it a year later than possible if fragments is in fact set in 2008/9 and her arrest happened 5 years before it. her being held in UNIT makes this worse cause it would mean she joined tw3 somewhere in mid-late 2005, which makes sense with the dates given in only the book, but with nothing else outside it, since the latest it could possibly be if we followed the show would be 2004.
because of the inconsistencies of recruitment dates (and birthdays of everyone apart from ianto and suzie, but i will Not be getting into that rn), it's pretty difficult to put exact dates on recruitment, but what i've generally managed to gather according to information from the book (and other snippets of lore i can remember off the top of my head) is:
owen: joined tw3 2005 or 2006, making him around 23yrs old when recruited, but is stated to have been born in 1980 in s2e13 (exit wounds) so possibly 25/26.
tosh: joined tw3 either in 2004, or 2005, making her around 28-30yrs old, but stated to have been born in 1981 in exit wounds, so possibly 24-25.
suzie: joined tw3 anywhere between 2000-2005, making her 27-32yrs old at recruitment.
gwen: joined late 2007, making her 29yrs old.
ianto: joined tw3 early 2007, making him 23yrs at time of recruitment, would've turned 24 that same year though.
edit: ianto joined tw1 as a junior researcher in 2005, which would make him 21-22yrs old at the time.
in conclusion: the book seems pretty inconsistent with information. birthdays, recruitment days, loads of other things are off, so despite having spend almost a whole day compiling information for this post from this book, i don't think it's a very trustworthy source for timeline stuff (or much else really). i don't think the writers really bothered with making the timeline consistent and accurate because, let's face it, most fans probably don't care enough to make a complete and accurate timeline down to months and years for a spin-off show from the mid-late 2000's. if you're still reading this, you deserve financial compensation. won't be the one providing it though.

No surprise three of those are from the same series (my most popular one). I kind of feel like The Imposter is my fandom legacy, which is fine by me; I'm proud of it.

5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
I started out responding to every one. I barely do anymore, only because when I was writing long, chaptered fics, it became overwhelming. Lately I get many fewer, so I do respond to some. I tend to reply to comments on non-Sherlock fics more now, because the fandoms are smaller and I like to gas us up a little!
6. What’s the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
Am and Was, the final story in my fight!lock series Bleed So Pretty, ends with a double suicide.
7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
Probably All Said and Done, the happy ending for the 1920s stately home series, Dawn Before the Rest of the World. But a lot of my fics have happy endings, even most of the angsty ones.
8. Do you get hate on fics?
I have! Very early on someone got very angry that AUs even exist, and took it out on one of my stories (maybe it was the first AU she ever read???); she mostly complained that I was writing Them out of character, which is probably true to some extent, but everyone has their own tolerance levels for that kind of stuff, so, whatever. Someone got very angry that one of my missing-scene fics based on a novel included verbatim text at the beginning and end (context being necessary to the bit I wrote in the middle), even though I made that VERY CLEAR in the beginning notes; she was not satisfied and felt I was a plagiarist, which to me is not a concept that even applies to transformative works, so again, whatever.
I don't mind any comment except ones that boil down to "I don't like this," because there's nothing I can do about that. I can fix spellings and punctuation, sew up plot holes, and make other minor adjustments to the technical stuff. But if someone just comments that they don't like the story, I'm helpless.
9. Do you write smut?
Very much so! I have written entire long novels just as set dressing for smut.
10. Do you write crossovers?
Several! I decided as soon as Sherlock came out on BBC that it takes place in the very same universe (London, present day) as Doctor Who/Torchwood (so, aliens exist). So I crossed those over a bunch. Doctor Who/Torchwood also got crossed over with Dexter, and with The Sandman comics. ACD!Holmes crossed over with Raffles, based on a screenplay of a film featured on MST3K. Black Sails is already Treasure Island pastiche, so that counts though I'm not responsible for it.

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
I was a victim of netscraping of the AO3 by various pay-to-read schemes, twice. But to my knowledge, no one person has like, copy/pasted my fic and put their name on it as the author.
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
A couple in Russian, a couple in Chinese.
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
Twice. It's not really my jam.
14. What’s your all-time favourite ship?
Johnlock.
15. What’s the WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
A final story in my Road to Home series, a fix-it fic where Donna gets her memory back (which I began writing in 2013 or 2014). Now that she's got it back in canon, it seems even less likely I'll ever finish it.

Dialogue.

Right now, discipline (mine, not in my BDSM AU characters')
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?
I've done it, probably not 100% correctly or well, but I try really hard (not just google translate! I consult native speakers!) to get it right. Generally I recommend keeping it to a minimum unless you learn the trick where AO3 lets you hover a cursor over text and you can put the translation in the pop-up. Too few people are multilingual.
19. First fandom you wrote for?
I wrote self-insert Duran Duran bandom fic starting when I was 12, in 1984. My first fic on the AO3 was a Sherlock fic.

20. Favourite fic you’ve ever written?
Don't make me choose! I can't choose a favourite child. Today I was writing on One-Man Advantage, so that's a fave because of recency bias, but I was also thinking about Stages, so that's a fave because when I think of it my heart aches. The Re/Formation of Billy Bones is a fave because I love the backstory I created for him and I think I wrote it well. At Depth is a tiny hidden gem. I love all the Christmas ones and all the snowed-in ones. I love the kinky ones and the fluffy ones and the ones with OCs. I love some I've forgotten about. I love'm all.

So recently I've had a flurry of notifications from AO3 for a lot of my Torchwood stories, including several reviews. Thank you if you've recently left one! :) Needing a distraction (and wondering why one story in particular was suddenly being read so many years later) I decided to read some of my old stories at night and had some thoughts. . .
I remember how much fun Jack and Ianto were to write, as well as the rest of the team. And I think I did a pretty good job with their dialogue and banter.
I created some cool original characters and settings, not to mention some kick ass plots I'm pretty proud of (and some not so much)
I sure wrote a lot of time travel and time loops. The one I read last night was not very good, though. :P
Speaking of that particular time loop, it took me more than half the story to remember what it was about and what was going to happen. Ironic that I wrote it and that it was also about memory loss.
Sometimes my writing was pretty darn schmaltzy for two grown men fighting aliens.
I can't believe I turned Santa Claus into a time traveler with a vortex manipulator and that Jack and Ianto worked for him. The first bit was kind of cool and actually well thought out; the end was kind of schmoopy.
Adam was an annoying character.
Fanfiction solves all the plot and character problems, including ones that maybe weren't even there to begin with. And a lot of fanfiction is ten times better than canon, like almost every story out there about how Jack and Ianto first hooked up after Lisa's death.
I wrote a story where Ianto considered leaving Torchwood but didn't. Are there any stories where he did, but kept his memories and kept dating Jack? Just went and worked a normal 9-5 job and hoped he'd get to see Jack in between Torchwood runs? I could see it working. I half wonder if I wrote it but don't remember.
The Torchwood premise was really quite ridiculous, a team of five misfits protecting the city from a dangerous Rift and aliens. At the same time, so many amazing possibilities!
I once started a story about Ianto's shadow self and wish I'd done more with it. I wonder how many other ideas are in my years-old unfinished folder.
Again, thank you if you are still reading TW fanfic and leaving kudos! Even years down the road, it touches the writer and we appreciate it. It's been fun to jump back in for a while. Maybe when I'm done rewatching Stargate I'll give Torchwood a binge. :)
