Timeline has been updated to include Big Finish releases A Postcard From Mr Colchester, Sabotage, Tube Strike, and Missing Molly. Next update will include Disco and Torchwood One: I Hate Mondays.
Torchwood Timeline (April 2024)
This is my canon timeline for the Torchwood TV stories, novels, and audio productions. It's fairly similar to the wiki timeline with a few small tweaks. It's also completely spoiler free, unlike the wiki timeline.
Some entries have firm dates, some have months, some have general decades, so I've tried my hardest to fit them into where I feel they fit. If anyone spots anything that I've missed or sees any glaring problems let me know and I'll try to suss it out. New stories will be added as they are released.

When something shows up on your dash and you have zero relationship to the fandom but the situation is oh so familiar

he sounded like that wasn't the first time he needed to do that

Do we have anyone picking up the slack on writing the wiki entries for Tube Strike and Missing Molly? I just noticed we don’t have entries for either. Not sure if it’s because of the push to leave fandom wiki, but it would be nice to keep things up to date.
I retired from proper wiki writing years ago, but could pick it back up if nobody else will.

I suppose I'm carrying on my trend of Ianto centric posts, with TWM #1's The Legacy Of Torchwood One.
I remember when this came out. It was so cool seeing a little bit more of Ianto's Torchwood One past. With all of the Big Finish releases, it's all but been retconned out of canon, but it's still a good little piece.
Also interesting to note, the story seems to be set during season two but the layout of Jack's office and the walkways around the watertower are the season one layout.

Sharing a dropbox link to a PDF of The Torchwood Archive.
The biggest takeaway I can give you with this book is take it with a grain of salt. As a concept, it's brilliant. Lots of cool information put together in a fun way.
However, so much of it has since been retconned or contradicted elsewhere. For me personally, it's one of the lowest tiers when it comes to what I consider canon. Dates are wrong, facts are wrong, the same document has been edited between different sources, it's a little bit of a mess.
Lots of fun, though!

Torchwood is such a fun show. Two seasons of x-files like monster of the week loosely connected by an overarching plot thread. One of them is about a parasite that kills people with sex, the very next one is about a sexy Cyberman who gets sprayed bbq sauce to make a pterodactyl eat her. Jack is transphobic. Episodes are either very good or very bad with no in-between
Then, season 3 comes up and it's the best written most compelling story you've ever seen and it's only six episodes spanning the course of just a few day. Half the original cast is gone by the time this seasons starts.
And then season 4 just dramatically drops in quality, now it's in America, fuck you, there's CIA agents one of those is named rex. It's back to a 10 episodes series but with a continuous plot like the 3rd season was. At this point in time the eponymous organization doesn't exist anymore in it's own show.
Then the audios come up and the audios set during season 1-2 are better than the show ever was. The audios set after s4 are their own thing and have their whole brand new dynamic. Also the main theme is about racism now and the rise of reactionaries.
Also now there's a 1950s spin off featuring the horniest gay manipulator you've ever seen and also the cop friend from the tv show.

I don’t l know how to vote on the poll because I think the show ends with COE but also some things after that are still canon
I think that’s totally normal and most people would maybe even agree. I know I do. I’ve already said that I essentially take all of the Big Finish monthlies to be canon even though for me it ends at Children Of Earth.
I also see things from post COE as canon even though I don’t see the stories. Gwen and Rhys having a daughter called Anwen. Jack’s relationship with Angelo. I’d even go so far as to say the entire plot of Cuckoo. It’s not quite as black and white as the poll would suggest.
Honestly if you selectively cut Jack and Gwen out of all of The Story Continues I’d call it canon. Obviously the entire plot would change so that’s not possible, but great swaths of the story could find their way in there.

I'm kind of obsessed with how, as a fandom, but also in some of the early Torchwood EU, they're like Ianto's a fast runner and a great driver and has a mean left hook but GDL takes one look at Ianto and goes hmm nope that's a guy gets beat up and cries about it

We already knew that the Big Finish Iantology would be finishing in a story about Ianto's father. What we didn't know was that the two stories before it were paving the way. The Iantology is, at its core, a three hour reflection on Ianto's relationship with fathers.
Tube Strike is about Ianto's relationship with Tommy. It's not an easy relationship, it's not a kind relationship. Tommy likes Ianto but doesn't understand him. He wants him to be better, to do better, and if that means being tough then so be it. Ianto can't seem to shake wanting to do good in his eyes, wanting to make him proud, but can never quite do it. They would both rather die before telling the other person how they feel. It's a vulnerability neither can afford.
Missing Molly is about holding an idealised mental image of someone, even in the face of reality. Stuart is a loving father. He's strong and brave and dedicated. He's angry and bitter and distant. Both things can be true. Our parents are never only one thing. A man who lashes out because his own actions lead to him losing the thing he holds most dear. A child who tries to be what its parents want but in the end hurts and is hurt and needs to leave.
When I first read the plots of the three releases I didn't understand why they were being treated as a trilogy. Now having heard two thirds of the story, I can't wait for the final piece of the puzzle. I don't think it will be what I was expecting, but relationships never are. Whatever direction Disco goes in, I can't wait.

Would love to hear from the person who voted for season one!
I don’t think there is a show so heavily split into eras not just by plot but by production change. As a result, there are so many differing opinions on what is “real” Torchwood.
So regardless of which eras you’ve consumed, which eras you enjoy, where did the story of Torchwood end for you?
I’ve seen every piece of tv and listened to every audio, and to me the story ended with Children Of Earth. It was the perfect wrap up. Jack spent so long trying to be a hero and in the end fled from the consequences. Gwen let Torchwood take over her life and ended up abandoned. It was a heartbreaking ending and everything that came after cheapened it.
I considered adding the Torchwood monthly range as an in between era, but I think those stories can pretty much all exist without being influenced by the events of the actual seasons.
Where do you stand?

Out of curiosity, would people prefer a monthly edit to this with any new releases or a bulk update every six months?
Torchwood Timeline
This isn't in any sort of nice format or anything, but I'm sharing a copy of my timeline for the Torchwood TV stories, novels, and audio productions. Maybe one day I'll add in the comics and short stories, just not yet.
It's fairly similar to the wiki timeline with a few small tweaks. It's also completely spoiler free, unlike the wiki timeline.
Some entries have firm dates, some have months, some have general decades, so I've tried my hardest to fit them into where I feel they fit. It's a good resource if you want to consume chronologically and I've tried to allow for the stories where they take place across several time periods.
If anyone spots anything that I've missed or sees any glaring problems let me know and I'll try to suss it out.

If we’re asking questions, Ianto smokes a lot in fanfiction. Is that canon? I’m not a big fan of smoking and don’t like writing characters smoking
As far as I’m aware, Ianto isn’t a canon smoker. Off the top of my head, in SUV he doesn’t carry a lighter which would imply that he isn’t. However SUV says he doesn’t ever drive the SUV when in reality he drives it as early as the first episode of Torchwood so that that with a grain of salt.
If anyone has anything to support this in either direction, let me know.
Stress smoker Ianto sends me feral so I personally always write him as a smoker.

Just saw a post someone did about how apparently Ianto tried to off himself after countrycide but I can't find anything about it anywhere. Is it in a radio drama? or was it something that was cut? Do you know anything about it?
Broken is a 2016 release by Big Finish that covers Ianto’s mental state between the end of Cyberwoman and the beginning of They Keep Killing Suzie. While the actual event of Ianto attempting suicide isn’t portrayed, the direct aftermath is. It’s a great story and definitely work buying and listening to.
