March 23: Headcanons

Lane family headcanons, in no particular order and for no particular reason:

Vincent is around so infrequently that Amanda is functionally a single parent, and this has always been true. But they are very much still together. It's just the relationship style that works for them.

They are (possibly) not legally married.

Trent has 6 earrings because Jane wanted 3 to match his but she was only 12-13 at the time and nervous so he got the other 3 done at the same time.

When Trent was in high school and Jane was 11-12, she hung out with his band like their little groupie.

Jane speaks fluent Spanish.

Summer was fairly young when she had her first kid and she lived on and off in the Lane house when her kids were small--this is how Jane got so good at 'babysitting.'

At least one member of Mystic Spiral has crashed for an extended period at the Lanes'.

Either Vincent or Amanda comes from money, possibly both, which is how they can afford the house in suburbia. Jane has to scrounge for money only because her parents are irresponsible with money, not because they don't have it.

Jane is a secret tech geek and will be an early adopter of various 21st century technologies ("But 'the web' sounds so cool!')

Trent will be in Boston within... two years tops, after IICY.

I think we all need to remember that it is possible to not shit on someone or even something, to make yourself or the thing you’re into better. multiple things can co-exist, you can have preferences and others can have theirs. people can have routines and faves and themes they love, and you don’t have to crap on their cookie to make them bake another or hell, even make yours better and tastier, y’know?

let's just let people have their cookies.

i think fandom has largely forgotten that it was scott and not stiles who began the show with the little red riding hood symbolism. he was the one attacked by the big bad wolf and subsequently turned.

i love zuko. he's my favourite character (though the others aren't that far behind - he like. inches ahead of them by a small margin) but i've read too many instances where people bastardize aang, katara and sokka for being "mean" to him - something he so rightly deserves.

i mean from the moment they met zuko had tormented them. stalked them. attacked them. destroyed almost everything in his path just to get to aang. aang, sokka and katara are justified in their "mistreatment" and distrust of zuko.

the only reason we sympathize with him is because we saw him go through that transformation, we saw the reason why he is the way that he is, we saw him confront his father and realize that the war is wrong. the last time they saw zuko, he had a chance to join them, and instead he attacked them, joined his sister (who was also attacking and stalking them) and took over ba sing se.

they have every right to treat him the way that they did in the western air temple (and compared to what zuko did to them, there is no competition.)

I’m curious. Should I finish this WIP? (Does it count as participating in the smut war???) either way it kinda grew on me, so I wonder:

I think it's cool that Sally's last name is Hayes, presumably pronounced like haze, and that Holden was *in* a haze with her for years, believing that she wasn't a phony

April 2: The Expanse 1x08

I don’t think this was my favorite episode of the show, although I will give it credit for getting interesting toward the end and finishing on a high note. The whole first half was just wandering around the ship, though, which I’m sure was supposed to be mysterious and suspenseful and a little horrific, and I did want it to be, but which struggled to hold my attention. I kept zoning out because I couldn’t really see anything and didn’t know what I was looking at. Also, I feel like this show could really benefit from a ‘last time on’ style recap. The art of the recap has definitely been lost in the age of streaming but like not everyone binges everything all the time. And even if I were binging this, there are details from episodes 1 and 2 that are now coming up again in episode 8 and like… how am I supposed to keep track of all of that?

Anyway. I’m really starting to enjoy the energy Alex brings to the crew. He has the vibe of the tech guy in the heist: he’s not breaking into the bank but he’s out in the inconspicuous van with his super computer and his headset, mic’d into everyone’s ear, saying things like ‘there you go beautiful’ to a lock he’s picking remotely through the use of binary code. And I’m into it. That’s not really the role I thought he was going to have but here we are. Almost makes you wonder if Dr. Feelgood would have become less annoying with time, but here we are.

I do really love Eros and the thought and detail that goes into these sets. It’s another way-way-out-there space station but it feels totally different from Ceres. Like, not just Ceres but worse. It has a different mood, different color scheme, and I definitely got that ‘jewel of the Belt fallen into disrepair’ vibe I think they were going for. The hotel was sort of 70s, the people were sort of all giving ‘secretly in the Mob’ vibes. The shoot out felt like anther genre sticking its head in all of a sudden, like 70s exploitation flick, but not in a bad way. The thuggish security felt oppressive, and notably different from Star Helix, even before Miller’s friend started explaining more about them, right from the landing of the craft. We’ve been teased for a while that this a Really Bad Place and I feel like it’s living up to its reputation.

It’s of course exciting that the different threads of the narrative are coming together: that we’re seeing Miller and the Rocinante crew in the same place, and finding out that they are both looking for the same person. The thing is that I don’t remember enough details to really know what I’m watching here. I can see the structure of threads coming together but I can’t get any more specific than that. They’re after the same McGuffin, but… why again? Absolutely no idea what Fred Johnson wants with Julie or if we’re supposed to understand them as working together or not. I get that the Thing at stake, the thing on the level above Julie, what she was maybe searching for or maybe using/transporting or maybe trying to destroy and definitely killed by, is some sort of weapon, probably bioweapon, and it likes light or warmth or something. But who created it, who has it, who knows about it, who wants it, and how it relates to the reign of terror that’s been following Holden and friends around this whole time is like complete question marks for me right now. It’s like I’m reading a story in a language I’m not quite fluent in: I can get a lot of the big picture and get a general sense of things, but I lack a lot of vocabulary. The noun did verb with the noun to the noun.

Julie is still very mysterious and confusing to me, and I hope that in the next couple episodes we find out more about her. She seems more mystery than person a lot of the time. I’d like to get real answers so she can feel more like a human and less like an object or plot device. But—I hope I’m not sounding mean or harsh because I am still basically just along for the ride and having a good time on it—I feel optimistic that I will.

Winter 2024 Anime watchlist

1. MASHLE: MAGIC AND MUSCLES Season 2

I really liked season 1, very fun, hilarious, the perfect anime to have a good time. Watched the new episodes and I'm still on board!!

2. Dungeon Meshi

For some reason, I think there's something missing for me to be completely invested in it, but I like it! The art style is really good and colorful, the characters are fun and I love all the cooking stuff, so i'll keep watching.

3. Solo Leveling

It's too early for me to really know if I like it or not. I haven't read the webtoon so I'm going in totally blind. For the moment, there's nothing new or groundbreaking, but I'm intrigued!

4. BUCCHIGIRI?!

I was actually excited about this one, I like new animes, especially original creations, and it was directed by Hiroko Utsumi, so I had to add it to my list! I watched the first episode and it's not really what I expected after watching the trailer, but it seems fun enough to continue, I'm curious.

5. Cherry Magic!

I watched the drama and it was so so cute, I couldn't skip the anime, honestly. The first episode is good, nice paced and the animation is cute!

6. Mr. Villain's Day Off

Cute anime, a very enjoyable slice of life where we follow a villain on his days off. Nothing much happens, the mc is just obsessed with pandas and sometimes interacts with other characters, but it's nice when you just want to watch something and chill.

ending this year by staying in my room, rotating between sorting laundry and working on fanfiction. not glamorous but honestly i'm excited
