Prompt: Ever since harry bought that vintage painting and hung it in his gallery, spooky things have been happening around his house...
Summary:
The painting had belonged to his uncle. And, like most of the possessions tucked away in the old Victorian mansion, Harry paid it no mind at first. That is, he was far too busy trying to sort through the tangle of his late uncle’s estate to bother uncovering the dusty canvas sheets in the art gallery. By the time he got around to it, blowing off some paperwork to wander around the wings of the house he was less familiar with, the lawyers and estate agents had all left. When he finally pulled the cover off the massive portrait on the north wall, he was all alone.
or, on break from his job with the orchestra, harry retreats to his late uncle’s manor up north. there’s a painting high in the gallery that he does his very best to ignore. an au (very) loosely inspired by the picture of dorian gray

We have our rec lists for October 2021 and 2020, which will have most of the fics in our Halloween tag as well. The October 2022 rec will be out next Tuesday and will have some more spooky fics to get in the mood too! 🎃

few tags in here! i’ve been absolutely exhausted as of late but trying to keep plodding along w my fics, which i’m really very excited about!
alright so here we go, first up the find the word challenge! thanks for the tag @alwaysxlarrie this is such a fun one!

smile: this is from my @erodaficfest lobster fic which will be coming soon :))) it is extremely self-indulgent but here we areeeee
Reya smiles as the lobster reaches a small appendage toward a low-hanging lock of hair, grabbing at it curiously.
raised: this is from one of my two @1dfrightficfest fics, the dorian grey one i’ve posted snippets from before! gotta get my shit together and finish them both up but i’ve been really enjoying indulging my gender explorations in a horror setting :))
He raised a wondering hand out to the oil-flecked surface, as if to touch the lines of his uncle’s face but paused, a sudden shiver in his shoulders warning him off.
sucked: and this is from my submitted but not yet revealed grandmomrry fic for @1dsilverfoxfest i really speed-wrote this one but it means a great great deal to me so i’m hoping it’s coherent. here’s a small interaction between montero and his mother <3
Montero sucked in a breath, his chest heaving. “Can I hug you?” he asked, staring at the distance hanging between them. She locked eyes with him, and Montero felt an eternity of pain pass.
“Yes,” his mother breathed.

These evenings always feel like a luxury, and lately Harry has been trying to allow himself to experience more joy without guilting himself into thinking he doesn’t deserve it.

soulmate.doc: yes, this is no hand on the reign. yes, it’s still in progress. i’m actively working on it, i promise!
bloodylove.doc: i started this ages ago and put it on hold but i think i might bring it back for the @1dfrightficfest
fake_exes.doc: this is going to be my baby after i finish nhotr. i’m super hype about it but also am going to write it very slowly bc i want it to be perfect
housing_au.doc: i pitched the idea for this fic (fake relationship for university housing au) to a few friends and they all said “but you wrote that already?” and yes, i did.... and i’ll do it again. coming to the @1dclicheficfest if i can get my shit together in time for the deadline
surprise.doc: i had honestly forgotten i ever started this haha. the idea was “the five times harry tries (and fails) to surprise louis and the one time he actually does” where the one time is a proposal. super cute but tbh i’ll probably never finish this
whyrudoingthistourself.doc: this was going to be a MCD fic that I started writing while procrastinating a philosophy paper in undergrad... it’s also probably never going to get finished lol
Doc2.doc: this entire document contains only the following line - “Do you think we’ve already met our soulmates?” Louis asks, gazing up at the sky - and apparently i never bothered to even name the doc so... safe to say this isn’t going anywhere either haha

Prompt: Character A always tells people that fear is easy to beat, nothing more than a trick of the mind. They believed it was true until Character B challenged them to spend one night in a nearby graveyard where the fears they face seem all too real
Summary:
“I did it for us,” Harry pants into his knees, gripping her hand with all his strength. “I did it so we’d both survive.” He coughs into a shiver, and can’t tell whether it’s his own hand tightening, or if there’s an answering squeeze. “We were dying,” he sobs, and when he closes his eyes he can see the outline of a cross branded into the back of his mind.
Harry chokes on his next breath.

1. What are your favorite tropes to read/write?
Less of a trope, more of a theme, but I love reading and writing gender fics that are centered on non-normative ways of experiencing one's body, whether that's trans or non-conforming characters. I'm trans and fic has offered a pretty safe space for me in terms of thinking through my own identity and presentation, as well as being exposed to different ways of being genderqueer, so gender fics have a very special place in my heart!
2. What are you most excited for about your fright fest fic?
I was really excited to get to explore themes of gender and bodily safety/autonomy through a horror setting. I find the intersection between body horror and body dysphoria a really interesting (and painful) one, and I was really thrilled to get the chance to explore some pretty graphic representations of struggling to feel quite right in your body. It's definitely more dark than I usually write for fics (I'm also pretty new to fic-writing), which was really cool to explore!
3. Can you give any spoilers about your fright fest fic?
Spoilers are just that I'll be writing about trans people, like always, and that neither of them are focused on romance or relationships. They're both quite psychological, I'd say?
4. What song, if any, best fits your fright fest fic? Feel free to explain this as much or as little as you like.
Okay, I won't explain this one but Falling for "high in the gallery".
5. Anything else you'd like to share that we didn't ask about?
Just another big thanks to the mods. for hosting the fest, I'm so excited for it!

i got choice, dark, and between as my words.
choice: this is from my @1dsilverfoxfest fic which is technically not a wip anymore i suppose bc it’s all submitted but yet to be revealed :) anyway, harry/lil nas x, grandmomrry, out in the country, farming/knitting/seasonal fluff, etc.
It’s always a deliberate choice to open this box with someone, to make apparent the murky depths and untouched recesses of his past, but with the way Harry’s looking, so vulnerable and open, it’s one he barely has to think about.
dark: i use this word all the time, but i’m going to select a snippet that uses it within the word darkness. this is from my @1dfrightficfest (one of 2 i’m doing, actually, bc i have zero self-control), harry the unlikely inheritance recipient, dark music and shadowy portraits in a manor on the hill & gender bc it’s me
There was a certain thickness to the surroundings up here—a darkness in the mist that settled above the forests, keeping everyone and everything close to the ground.
between: from my dear @erodaficfest lobster fic which actually doesn’t have a single member of 1d in it so i’m not sure who’ll want to read it, but swims around in the world harry created for adore you and plays around with some themes of belonging!
They wince as distant lightning ripples a shivery line between sea and sky.
