Any headcannons for what Cersei would wear throughout her evolution? (from girl at Casterly Rock and Kingslanding to young bride to queen to whatever is going on at the end for AFFC) Love your stuff💕

Tiny Cersei was always dressed in the latest fashions, to the point that her clothes were cumbersome and heavy. She was more heavily dressed than most of the grown women at court, with her fancy brocade panels, pearl lined hoods, and large sleeves. Joanna was very adamant that she look like and behave in a way becoming for a young noblewoman, so Cersei was not allowed the relative laxity children are sometimes given.

As a teenager, Cersei started wearing the fashions of the Reach, as some minor act of rebellion because she found the stifling clothing of the Westerlands boring and prudish. She liked the low cut of the neckline and the excess of fabric in the sleeves and all the gilded lining and embroidery. And she definitely liked the way people looked at her in awe. She wore these until her early marriage too, and everyone copied the modern fashions of the stylish young queen.

Once Cersei starts immediately hating her life, she ditches the fashions of her teenage years and goes back to something more reminiscent of her childhood at The Rock. It's not the exact same, its far more frillier and angular than the smoothness of the clothing of her youth (think the transition from Tudor to Elizabethan fashion, or like mid 1500s to later 1500s), but the general shape reminds her of her youth and mother, and the sheer weight and discomfort of the clothing gives her some kind of sick comfort. Being the narcissist (affectionate) she is, she likes whatever can give her attention and spark jealousy in others. Heavy and patterned bright colored fabric, stiff lace collars, excessive beading, and large skirts for days. She dresses like this for most of the current timeline, and it gets increasingly more garish, until she's arrested at the end of AFFC

And after her atonement, she does a complete 180. Dressing like an old spinster from the stormlands. Her shaved head almost always covered, essentially all of her gowns are shapeless. The only thing that puts her apart from the septas is that her clothing is still decorated and colorful, but much less so than her old wardrobe. This shift is half forced on her by the faith and half chosen as a sort of security response after being harassed and humiliated.

More on the cultural inspiration stuff George never elaborated on: imagine the HAIRSTYLES bro. The women from the south wear it in all these pretty intricate braided styles which depend on whether you’re married or not. And some of them veil but with pretty gauzy fabrics bc it’s too hot for anything else. Just basically renaissance italians

The northerners also wear braids but they’re much more simple for practicality. But maybe they weave rings and metal clasps in for decoration or social status! Lots of thick and pretty embroidered veils for the winter time

The riverland girls like to weave ribbons and twine and flowers in their hair that they picked from the nearby rivers :) Stormland girls do tight braided updos because it’s always raining. Ladies from the reach love love love to have curls and pile them in a bunch of diff ways on top of their heads

AND IN ESSOS all the free city artisans make lovely metal hairnets and headbands for the women that are the latest fashion trends. The Dothraki women wear tied up elaborate twists instead of braids bc I don’t understand why they all have to have ratty hair. Qarth women like to slick I’d down with oil and place pretty stones in their updos

There is just so much variety and don’t get me started on the clothes themselves. ASOIAF should’ve just been written by a teenage girl

i LOVE the stupid escoffions and hennins i love the cones and horns and ribbons i think southern women would wear them. since the faith is fantasy catholic and sexist i like the idea of modesty being a tenant in their mysterious holy texts grrm hasn't deigned to feature, so covering hair is important but the nobles aren't gonna stop being slay and fashionable so they have this huge cone hats with silk and ribbons... gable hoods for more religious areas like the river lands perhaps

for unmarried/prepubescant girls though i LOVE braids i love braiding ribbons and flowers into hair esp in the riverlands and the reach. i love then cultures have a tradition of keeping hair long and having long braids i think the vale or the westerlands could do that, we see rohanne webber do it.

also yes yes yes on updos for the stormlands!! kind of like yulia tymoshenko the former ukrainian prime minster if you've ever seen her, maybe even more elaborate!!

people talk about like 'what if asoiaf was written by a woman' hopefully she'd have indulged my fixation on historical hair and fashion
