been a bit! i had my sat and a bunch of other eventful things the past week or two — but glad to be back!

this is just a random silkwing (i’ve always loved drawing them) but i just realized it could also work for luna! hats off to that.

I don't know why but Luna really spoke to me as a character on a personal level and so when I decided to do a Silkwing I knew it had to be her. The Silkwings have so many kinda weird and interesting anatomy bits to em that I had to figure out; I'm actually *really* happy with how this turned out.

Story of this pic: When first time russian book cover was shown, it was different from original cover. Many people didn't like that because all previous books had same original covers with one same style of Joy Ang, and lots of people like to collect books and put it together on shelf to make it look cool, so you can imagine fans disappointment. People started to draw their cover versions to show that they can do better than official russian variant. And I did, too. Still thinking that my version is one of the best if not the best, it was made specifically to doesn't stand out so much from original covers if you put it all together but still look different enough.

like can you image Blue and Luna growing up there lmao? Blue would try to diffuse all the conflict there (and fail, but hey, it’s the thought that counts!) and Luna would keep up with the FlameSilk hot goss.

Need I remind you that these are fictional characters. They can't be hurt by anything we do to them, and they shouldn't be confused to be real people. They aren't.

Tell us about other names in Russian translation

As you already know, the names of characters in book translations can... change. Yes, names shouldn't change in theory, but in WoF this is important because this world has a different naming system. Therefore, most of the character names in the Russian translation of WoF are simply translated or not changed. But there are exceptions. For example, names that don't sound right or simply don't translate. That's why translators... change the characters' names. Sometimes not much, and sometimes...a lot:

Foeslayer – Fierce (rus: Люта/Lyuta). Mightyclaws – Claw (Коготь/Kogot').

Bigtail – Tail (Хвост/Hvost).

Scarlet – Purple (Пурпур/Purpur).

Winter – Cold (Холод/Holod). His name was changed because the word "winter" is feminine in russian, so it was inappropriate for a male character to have such name. For the same reason, Dune's and Turtle's names was changed.

Dune - Barkhan (Бархан/Barkhan).

Darkstalker – Darkstealer (Мракокрад/Mrakokrad).

Fathom - Depths (Глубин/Glubin).

Battlewinner – Dominant (Доминанта/Dominanta).

Starflight – Starwing (Звездокрыл/Zvezdokril).

Turtle - Shell (Карапакс/Karapaks).

Auklet – Guillemot (Кайра/Kaira)

Etc. But I would like to highlight some names.

Glory – Aureole (Ореола/Oreola). Aureole, or the sun's halo, is a rare natural, celestial phenomenon. To be honest, I think this name suits Glory better. Because she was supposed to be the "wings of sky", from the prophecy. Therefore, she was named after a beautiful celestial phenomenon, so that it would have at least something of “skywing” in her.

Another funny situation came up with the names Moonwatcher and Luna. The problem is that "moon" in russian sounds like "luna". Therefore... the translators could not allow that there would be two characters in the books with completely identical names. So...they changed Luna's name to "Lunia". It was so funny for me to read the dialogue between Moon and Luna when they said that their names are similar because of the butterfly, although in translation the differences in their names are a couple of letters.

A lot of people overlook Silkwings in wings of fire. They’re the docile tribe, the gentle giants. Beautiful but delicate butterflies with scales of azure wonders, but that’s all they are. And that’s completely intentional, you’re supposed to overlook Silkwings.

The thing about Silkwings is that they never had a chance to be anything. We know next to nothing about their history, their culture, and even their abilities. Flamesilk is something that Queen Wasp tried to hide, and back when Beetlewings were around, they were said to have even more abilities. After the tree wars, Silkwings were essentially stripped down to their name alone. Their ability to make silk was useful to Wasp, and later on their antennae were too. But they could never do anything more than that.

Luna got swept in a silk parachute all the way to Phyrria, isn’t that cool? What if Silkwings before the tree wars often made parachutes for wingless dragonets or injured Silkwings? What if they had a language of their own that they spoke through vibrations on silk lofts like strumming a guitar? What if certain colours on Silkwings were rumoured to show your personality, kind of like zodiac signs. It could be said that green Silkwings were fierce and competitive, or yellow Silkwings were curious and creative. Blue Silkwings could be loyal and Loving or purple Silkwings could be adventurous and hard-working. What if they had beautiful forests of colourful trees, calligraphic silk art along the bark and branches. Flamesilk lanterns painstakingly crafted for ceremonial celebrations or holidays for Silkwings to whisper their greatest wishes into, before setting them free. There could be little doctors appointments for getting dragonets ready for their metamorphosis, and trying to calm the worries of those who were scared. Synchronized dances to form pictures with their wing patterns, hide and seek games where the seeker only uses their antennae, murals of stories weaved together with silk. But unfortunately all of this is a what if.

The tragedy of the Silkwing tribe is that they don’t have that, nothing in their world was made for them. They have no way of finding out who they once were, what it means to be a Silkwing. They don’t get to weave tapestries of their stories, their homes or their happiness. Everything they make is a what if, a dream of a life they couldn’t achieve without tragedy.
