i think this is a nice way to follow up on lucifer's manipulation in season 11. sam's been relatively passive since he got out of the cage for various reasons, and with lucifer egging him on to return to his pre-torture roots, this feels like a good way to reclaim his agency. the whole of season 12 sam has let dean call the shots while he follows behind, and even the brother conflicts this season aren't as magnanimous as they've been in the past. for it to all culminate in this feels really nice: he takes back his agency and his will without compromising who he's become or "reversing" any of the developments he's had since he got out of hell. he denies lucifer what he wanted while simultaneously getting back his strength—a perfect middle ground, just like he's been seeking this whole season

i’m still behind on rewatch notes, even with the week off, but... putting some things here i will want to revisit
Betty. What is her role in all this, because she clearly has one.
She’s talking about “St. Miguel,” i.e. St. Michael, i.e. the Archangel Michael, patron saint of law enforcement.
And John’s vessel line.
we KNOW Michael had his little fingers stirring up this plot even going back to this era, ensuring that Mary and John ended up together to bring Sam and Dean into existence, and somehow Betty, John’s ex, is key to that.
in an episode that also had Ada sharing the lesson with Mary that it’s important to see your kids for who they ARE, not for the terrible things you believe they could become. Like... generational trauma. Literally.
Mary would NEVER have chosen for her kids to be hunters, but what she did when she came back into their adult lives, where they had already established themselves as hunters and caretakers of the world, she didn’t listen to them, didn’t see them for who they were because of the trauma of learning that everything she didn’t want for them happened to them anyway.
which was something Dean was finally able to unlock inside her mind, in an episode i happened to watch this morning... 12.22. Interesting parallel here.
