(Chapter 4)

Vox x Reader; Valentino x Reader; Alastor x Reader; maybe Lucifer x Reader

After your untimely death, Mr Vox was kind enough to take you in and give you a job as his assistant. However, it appears that you’ve caught the eyes of few other demons, who are certainly not afraid of a little competition…

“Hey, Val, can we talk real quick?”

“Hm? Voxy, baby, what’s the problem~?” Vox jogged up to Val, trying to catch him on the way to his studios, a long day of work ahead the two of them. He hands Valentino a coffee he got for him, from that nice place on brimstone avenue, and Valentino takes a long sip from it, releasing a pleased groan at the scalding fluid.

“It’s about my assistant, Y/N.”

“Your cute little conejita? Whatever is the matter, hm?”

Vox wasn’t quite sure how to phrase his question. “Well, it’s just that- Y’know, it’s almost spring and-“

“Voxy, baby, I love you, but get to the fucking point.” Valentino’s patience was thin, on a good day.

“Yeah, well, I need you to stop winding her up. The poor bunny can barely function with her, uhm, season, approaching, let alone with you feelin her up all the goddamn time.”

Valentino let a low chuckle at this, taking a long drag of his scarlet smoke, throwing his now empty coffee cup into the nearest bin, before gracefully draping his long arms onto his hips.

“But she’s so fucking fun to wind up, baby. Besides, it only January, i still got at least a month before it starts just being mean. I swear, one of these days, Voxy, if you’re not careful, I’m gonna snatch up that bebé bonita and make her mine~”

Vox let out a low growl at this, his screen glitching as his eye twitched with annoyance. If he knew Valentino well enough (which he probably did), it was unlikely he’d make such an obvious move. Key word - unlikely. Valentino was unpredictable; if he had a genuine interest, Satan knows the lengths he will go to.

“Fine. Just at least promise me, next time you make a mess of the poor girl, you’ll at least finish the fucking job so I don’t have to clean up your mess.”

“Oh, I think we both know I will~” Valentino’s grin sharpened, almost salivating at the thought of of having you sprawled out under him, face red and puffy, ears teary, your swollen lips covered in drool-

Well, that’s a thought for when he has the time to scheme.

It was 7:30 am when your alarm went off. You woke uo with a jolt, your body still exhausted despite your mind being wide awake, legs heavy like lead, thighs and pussy sore. With a groan, you dragged yoirself out of Vox’s comfy bed, the mattress almost willing you to stay in bed all day, despite the no doubt mountains of work you had to do.

Throwing on a blouse and a navy pencil skirt with matching heels, you gave your hair a quick brush, quickly looking yourself over in the mirror.

‘Looking good, bunny!’ You gave yourself a cheeky grin, being your own hype man in light if the empty apartment around you. Checking the time once again, you sighed lightly, grabbing your laptop and blazer, you set off towards work, thinking of treating yourself to a nice hot cocoa from the cute cafe on brimstone avenue on the way to work.

You really did like your job. Sure, it was exhausting, but the work was rewarding; you got help coordinate schedules, review scripts, fill out paperwork, and of course, you got to hang out with Vox! Your boss really was the best, he always made sure you were busy; he knew how much you loved feeling useful.

Entering the building, humming a merry tune you had heard on the radio earlier, you greeted the receptionist.

“Good morning, Annie! Have you had a good morning so far?”

“Why, good morning to you to, Y/N! You seem in an awful good mood today, my dear!”

You grinned at the woman, leaning against her desk with glittering eyes.

“I’m just happy to be at work today, Annie.”

“I truly don’t think i’ve ever met a young person who quite likes their job like you do, love.”

The two of you shared a giggle, as she showed you some pictures of her new grandchildren. Annie was such a sweet lady; one of your favourite coworkers, in fact. She always had somethjng nice to say, and a warm smile and anecdote to welcome you with.

A sharp, british accent cut through the usual bustle of the floor.

“God, where is that girl? I’m down a model and i need someone with some fucking class for lucifer’s sake!” The confident voice of Velvette rang through the floor, employees cowering at her commanding presence, hiding as she scoured the floor.

“Ah! There you are, my darlin’!”

Your back straightened significantly, tugging at your skirt as Velvette’s eyes lit up as she spotted and approached at a brisk pace.

“H-hello, Ms Velvette! C-can i help you in a-any way?”

She brushed off your now nervous demeanour, hastily looking you up and down before grabbing you by the wrist and tugging you towards the elevator.

“Yes, yes my darlin’, Vox told me you’d be here. Listen, babe, I’m down a model for a loungewear photoshoot i’ve planned to do today, and i need you in my department, okay love? You just gotta stand there and look pretty, which you are already doin’ a fantastic job at.”

Her flattery causes your cheeks to darken, as you limply allow her to drag you into the elevator, up a floor, and into one of her studios. Well, there goes all the work you had planned for the day.

Truth be told, you did quite like Velvette; she made easy conversation and could be quite the smooth talker despite her inclination towards bluntness. She also designed the cutest clothes, which was a bonus. Overall, she was fun to work for. Unless she deemed you incompetent. Then, life fucking sucked.

The first outfit she forced you into was a silky pajama set, relatively baggy on you, revealing your collar bones as she directed you into posing for, the photos capturing your timid aura. The second outfit were Vees branded tracksuits; each designed to mimic tbe style and colour scheme if each Vee. A black and read one with skulls and hearts; Velvette. A blue and red one with wiring details; Vox. Pink and lilac with feathers and hearts; Valentino. She once again had you pose for each one, captiring the details of the fashion whilst simultaneously capturing your contrasting delicate beauty. Finally, she gave you a second pajama set, this time shorts and a button up, completely complimenting your leporine appearence, producing absolutely adorable promotional material. Well, if Velvette was pleased, it was all worth it.

“Wonderful my darlin’, thank you so much for your cooperation, love.” She kissed both your cheeks affectionately, sending you off the change back into your work clothing.

However, on the way to the changing rooms, you were stopped by the familiar sound of a staticky voice.

“Velvette? Are you done with my assistant yet? I got a shit ton of work and all my other employees are apparently fuckin useless-”

Vox froze when he saw you; all vulnerable in a silky pajama set covered in strawberries. A smirk grew across his face, and you grimaced in embarassment.

“Velvette, my dear, great taste as always. Now, if you don’t mind, me and my assistant have some work to get back to.” Vox spoke, commanding the room, as his gaze never for a second left your own.

I've seen some discussion on Homelander's character duality and have been doing a lot of thinking about it lately. I find some of it strange and some intriguing, and I just wanted to share some thoughts on it.

There's some ideas that Homelander is who the character wants to be or is proud of being currently, but I think it goes much deeper than that.

There's an implication in the Diabolical series with Homelander's debut and first mission as well as the episode with 'Mirrorlander', and of course they don't cover everything. But I do think they tell quite the story.

The other thing is the often missed duality in Homelander's character, not to say that people don't notice he has more than one side to him, but more like they don't realize just how divided he is from the inside out.

He used to be a boy named John Gillman. Which Vought then tortured, never allowed to grow up, and convinced to be their chosen god puppet and 'perfect creation'. The Homelander.

But I think what people forget is that becoming Homelander was never really a choice for him. It was the path they set before him and told him he was going to be, while creating an image he not just wasn't prepared for, but couldn't possibly meet the standard of with the upbringing they gave him.

And this might be controversial, but I don't think Homelander is the real him.

I don't think John Gillman is the real him either.

I think they're both vital parts of him we see in the episode where he speaks to himself in the mirror. I think John Gillman is the little boy forced to be in a body far too powerful for even himself, that was able to admit that he wanted to be loved and does, more than anything. And I think Homelander is the part of him created by what Vought forced him to be that was yelling at him from the mirror, and is angry at the world for his circumstances and wants to take that feeling Vought stole, of having power and control back, through fear.

I think the real him is caught somewhere in a limbo between these two parts of him as there were a couple things that really struck me when I took a second look.

Annie January, or Starlight has a conversation with her mother at the end of the first season where she screams out, "No wonder I don't know who the fuck I'm supposed to be!".

The conversation is about Compound V and how her mother controlled every tiny little aspect of her life, down to her daughter never getting a real choice on what she wanted, based on a lie she was told.

Obviously, this isn't to say that Starlight went through anything close to what Homelander did, but the parallels of the situations can be seen, if much less severe, and there is still validity in the grief she has.

And that's the thing. I think Homelander doesn't know who the fuck he's really supposed to be. He wouldn't admit it, but I don't really think it's reasonable to think that with how badly Vought fucked him up, that he would somehow be certain of who and what he wants to be. And that just makes it worse.

When we see him in Diabolical during his debut, he is bewildered and in absolute awe. So far, only seeing the adoration from people. Something he's never had before in any capacity most likely. And those people understand him to be The Homelander, to be a new superhero that is there to save them.

There's even an immediate reaction of jealousy when the attention is switched to Black Noir because up until that point, Homelander has never had those feelings from people. Just fear and disgust.

Already, he's preconditioned to think extremely lowly of himself due to what Vought has done to the boy named John Gillman. And he doesn't realize he is a victim and that John never deserved those things, which works perfectly to manipulate him into being enamoured with this new persona that Vought created for him. Because it's new. It's different. And so far, it's not painful.

Understandably, his first mission goes terribly wrong. Especially when he is called a 'monster' as 'The Homelander'. Suddenly reliving his memories as the feelings against what he never chose to be come boiling up to the surface. He completely loses himself and kills every single person he is supposed to save, despite having initially tried to help. So we know that he wanted to be good, he wanted to be the hero, and he wanted to be loved. Even before being The Homelander, it was John Gillman who wanted all of those things.

But what happens instead? He is manipulated, first by Madelyn Stillwell into fighting Noir when he knows he's messed up and believes Noir will terminate him, and then Noir turns it around and makes him realize he can and will be loved by everyone as long as they never know he's imperfect.

And The Homelander is supposed to be 'perfect'.

So he latches on to that image and 'god' created by Vought while simultaneously using it to protect the and bury the boy he used to be.

And it continues like this. Eventually he begins to embrace the 'monster' that he can keep veiled while he takes power back through fear, and he can be loved so long as people never know about that 'monster'. Solidifying his path and duality of who he is from that very first mission. If he can get away with anything, why wouldn't he? Vought never taught him different.

The internal conflict won't simply disappear, but his comfort is having his cake, and eating it too. Even if he knows it will never be real...

#BACKGROUND

Hanan was born in San Francisco, California. Only daughter of a successful business woman and his father being CEO of his own company, Hanan would have to move and live in different countries since early age until her parents decided on settling down in New York; there, she would start taking ballet lessons.

Hanan would always excel in every school assignment, and her former classmates would refer to her as “the triple treat: beautiful, smart and kind.” It’s after a ballet winter showcase that she gets scouted by YG, an agent reaching out to her parents telling them she had potential. Her dad was reluctant to let her go and be a trainee, while her mother told her that she supported whichever decision she made.

She became a trainee at the beginnings of 2013 under YG. Hana trained for three years under YG, even getting contemplated to debut as a Blackpink member, but ultimately Hanan didn’t make the cut.

While being a trainee, she also kept practicing ballet.

Months before blackpink’s debut, she parted with YG on good terms and decided on staying in Seoul for a while to try her luck, eventually getting scouted by SM entertainment.

Live Show

Homelander/Starlight No powers/Office AU – Miss January is called in to handle her feral co-CEO before his TV interview. Unfortunately, she’s too nice to say no. Prompt: a shattered mirror, spilled wine, a bouquet of flowers

The call reaches her at five seventeen pm. She’s on the elevator, dressed in her Friday best (grey sweatshirt, jeans, low ponytail, no make-up) with her overnight bag slung over her shoulder and checking caller ID brings a mildly annoyed frown to her face. “I’m off all day, it’s in my calendar.”

“I know!” Ashley’s voice is closer to a hiss than a whisper. “I know, but we would really appreciate it if you could swing by.” Urgency tinted with the desperation of a horror film protagonist making a call from the inside of a closet while a killer is slithering through the house.

The elevator dings. Annie sighs. “Is the building on fire?”

“Mr Lander has his interview with Business Live scheduled for six pm.” Annie is about to remind Ashley that she already knows that, considering that’s the exact reason why their weekly recap meeting was cancelled and she was free to take the day off, but Ashley doesn’t give her the chance. “The show starts in forty minutes and he’s locked himself in backstage. We need someone to talk to him before he does something drastic. There are too many people around, we can’t allow this to escalate.”

A handful of possible answers swirl in Annie’s head. ‘It sounds like it’s already escalated.’ ‘What am I supposed to do about that? Just break the lock or something.’ ‘If he wants to embarrass himself, let him.’ ‘It’s my day off, go ask Reggie.’ She takes a deep breath and savours each and every one of those sentences, lets them melt on her tongue like sugar only to swallow them down. “Send me the address, I’ll get there as fast as possible.”

“Oh, thank fuck. The car’s waiting outside.” And with that, Ashley disconnects the call.

Annie stares at her phone. She’s standing in the foyer of her apartment building and when she looks up, she can see through the glass doors to the street outside. A black car shimmers in the street lights. She sighs and texts Hughie.

The drive is only about ten minutes, but when Annie arrives at the studio, Ashley is in a considerably worse state than she seemed to be during their talk. Her cheeks are crimson red and her hands are shaking, the scent of her deodorant strong and sweet on her overheated body. “There you are! Hurry, I think he’s been breaking stuff inside.”

Annie follows her along a corridor of backstage rooms, her sneakers squeaking to the beat of Ashley’s heels clicking away on shimmering linoleum floors. As soon as they stop, Ashley turns to her. “He’s in there. You have ten minutes. Good luck!” And she runs off.

There’s another short moment where Annie stands in silence, her bag still slung over her shoulder and her phone in hand, and considers texting Hughie the address of the studio. Not like it’s her job to handle John Lander, is it? But unfortunately, her sense of responsibility wins out yet again and she knocks on the door. “Mister Lander?”

Something crashes, the wood thrums with the impact. Annie flinches and stumbles back two steps. She’s just one text away from watching Love Actually on Hughie’s terrible couch.

Another knock. “John? This is Annie.”

The door opens immediately.

John stands in the doorway, tie missing and some three or four buttons undone. A few strands of his gold-shimmering hair fall into his face and there is a large wet stain on his dress shirt. “Annie. Did Ashley call you?”

“Yes,” Annie says, but before she can turn and call out to the woman to inform her that John is ready for action, a warm-strong hand wraps around her wrist and she’s pulled into the room. The door slams shut.

“Great. Is she getting the make-up people?” John drops her hand and steps back towards the dressing tables lining the wall, shrugging out of his jacket as he speaks. “I need a new dress shirt and a tie that matches your dress, unless you’re wearing red. Which you should, by the way, but I’ll take black, too.”

The spiderwebs of cracks that glitter all over the surface of the mirrors shatter the reflection of John unbuttoning his dress shirt into a kaleidoscope of skin and cotton. There’s a generous splatter of shards on the carpet as well, which mostly stem from the broken vase by the door and what seems to be the remnants of two to four glasses and a bottle of wine by the mirrors. Wine and water soak into the carpet, drops glitter on scattered petals and the broken spines of a dozen of lilies. A few of the flowers made it to the sofa, where both her overnight bag and his shirt end up in an untidy heap.

Annie is so preoccupied with taking in the general state of the room that she barely makes sense of the words John is saying. When she does, though, she snaps her head up from the sad sight of the ripped-up bouquet. “What – No, I’m not here for –“ There’s a knock on the door.

She turns and, in her haste to open the door, steps into the puddle of lily-water.

“Hi!,” Ashley says, no less stress-pink but with a Vaseline-sticky smile. She claps her hands. “There they are! I’m sorry, I couldn’t bring myself to interrupt the important discussion.”

“What,” Annie says, just as the woman in a stylishly asymmetric black dress Ashley was addressing steps in with a smile. “No problem at all. We have five minutes until wardrobe gets here. Please sit down.”

At six pm, Annie is sitting in an overly stuffed black leather chair, smiling as Andrew Clarkson greets the viewer of Business Live both in the studio and at home. The stage lights make her thighs stick together in the skin-tight pencil skirt and the layers of powder and mascara make her feel like her face is slowly melting. She has no idea what the interview is going to be about and she’s very aware of the way she looks next to John in his suit, with the shimmer of her bare knees and the low-cut, sleeveless blouse they found for her. Not to mention the slim red belt around her waist that perfectly matches his tie.

Much more concerning than any of that, however, is the fact that at least five people saw the spilt wine, the shattered mirrors and crumpled up shirt, and think she was around while the door was locked. As hard as she tries to focus on the questions Clarkson is asking, her mind keeps wandering back to a version of the story that’d suit that set-up. To John’s bare chest and a knocked-over flower vase, to a torn-off shirt discarded on a conveniently placed sofa and rough thrusts, hard and fast enough to crack the mirror under her shoulder blades.

Well, she thinks grimly. At least John made it to his stupid interview.

near death experience… for as long as marielle can remember, she’s always been something of a natural performer. a precocious, outgoing girl who saw the world as her stage, just as the great bard once said. her mother recognised this emerging talent early on and set about utilising it as soon as she could. mari’s little face was to become a regular sight amongst advertisement campaigns and bit parts on network television shows. she worked steadily throughout her childhood, attending performing arts school and eventually, graduating from drama school at twenty two. despite her wealth of girlhood experience in the industry however, marielle didn’t have much luck with auditions post-college. already, there was an image she was having difficulty shedding but the stars eventually aligned when she was hired to work at a famous entertainment resort complex in orlando. mari was a character performer there for three years, playing iconic princesses and mermaids and fairies alike day in and day out and entertaining children endlessly as she did so. it wasn’t the best job by any means, fending off leering fathers became a pastime and her mother’s disdain for it all was more than evident but it paid the bills and she was getting to do what she loved…

so, she always persevered. one job she’d occasionally perform was that of the fairy during the evening firework display the resort would put on each day in their main park. it was absurd and unnerving and involved being launched across a zip line atop the park for all the patrons to see but it did come with a substantial bonus so, who was mari to turn it down? the day was like any other when marielle’s near death occurred. she’d climbed to the top of the castle with her supervisor, dressed in a green mini-dress and blonde wig, ready to make some “magic” before being sent across the zip line as usual. fireworks burst into colour behind her, the audience wholly mesmerised by the display until that adoration swiftly turned to abject terror as they watched in horror as the fairy fell from her harness mid flight.

the thing had fucking snapped! was all mari could really string together in terms of coherent thought as she plummeted to the ground, LED wings and all. that and the likelihood of her very imminent death. the bright, colourful world she’d come to know immediately fading to black upon impact with the ground. ambulances were called soon thereafter, just as clips of what had happened began circulating online. the entertainment company tried to subdue the coverage and bury the lede but sure enough, news of actor, marielle chettiar and the extensive injuries she’d suffered under their employ broke that very night and nothing was to be the same again.

power… she used to dress as a fairy for work so, she became a fairy! sorta. marielle possesses the unique ability to transform into and subsequently, access the traits of a fairy. through a sparkling transformation ( which used to be triggered by a vocal command but can now be performed non-verbally ), she shifts into her “supersuit” and grows a set of beautiful butterfly-esque wings which allow her to fly with great manoeuvrability and at enhanced speeds. this glamorous transformation also grants her the ability to produce fairy dust, which possesses hallucinogenic qualities when it’s inhaled or comes into contact with skin. through her work as an agent, she’s learnt she has an innate magical aptitude and often tests the effectiveness of her ability by honing her hand-to-hand and close combat skills too.

drawbacks / vulnerabilities… when hit or overwhelmed and overexerting, marielle’s found she’s prone to detransformation. which effectively powers her down completely and often puts her at great risk of suffering similar falls to the one that gave her the power in the first place. they’re not easy to recover from either, requiring a period of rest and rejuvenation before she’s able to fully transform into a fairy again.

cerberus corp… in the wake of a landmark workplace injury lawsuit against the entertainment company, marielle amassed a large and very dedicated following. the proceedings were all public and these fans saw what had happened to her as an injustice, backing her at every turn when it came to righting that immense wrong. including her new career ventures, which had now expanded to modelling — wherein she debuted her fairy form to the world and incidentally captivated the hearts of children all across the globe. hers was a story dubbed “the american fairytale”, a pr dream and before she’d had time to process it all, who should knock on her door but elena navarro herself. cerberus corporation were interested in recruiting her and with her aspirations higher than ever before, mari was quick to accept the offer.

she’s been with cerberus corp for four years now, since 2019 and whilst she’ll convey that it’s all been smooth sailing… it hasn’t really. outwardly, marielle is everything an agent should be. singularly dedicated to the cause, with her eye ultimately set on becoming a level i. but she and the corporation’s pr team clash more often than mari would like to admit and it all comes back to that child-friendly image of hers. the one she can’t shed. because despite being a woman grown with all the adult needs and interests that come with it, her past and fantastical ability mean she’s a huge draw for the younger demographic of eo fans and the corporation have stayed firm in their position of not wanting that to change. it leads marielle to act out on missions. she plays fast and loose, living up to her codename and doing as she pleases ( within the confines of what’s been asked of her ). she’s caught between a rock and a hard place. perpetually wanting to progress higher but not at the cost of who she is.

codename… given that her ability is so… self-explanatory, faerie was something that came to mari early on and it caught on quick. of course, people still spell and say it as “fairy” as well as calling her by a spluttering of fairy names from pop culture but it’s faerie and she will correct you if you get it wrong. do shorten it to “fae” if you like though. she doesn’t mind that.

the ken to her barbie. can i get a himbo? be it pr relationship or genuine friendship, their energies are perfectly matched and they’re seemingly attached at the hip. perhaps a fellow level ii/iii agent who’s trying to climb the ranks like she is? just all the fun, playful, party vibes please.

a partner. someone whose feet are firmly planted on the ground whom she can provide air support to. doesn’t have to be an entirely amicable dynamic but they make a damn good team in the field and continually find themselves paired up together because of it.

Anne-Marie sits on the couch, reading a book. She tries not to think about her fight with Jonah's mother.

While she was glad to finally speak her mind, Anne-Marie wondered if there was any point. Joanna Mitchell will probably always see her as a 'threat' and someone 'corrupting' her sweet baby boy. For fuck sakes, she still comes over to do his laundry!

"Annie?" Anne-Marie snaps out of it when seeing her grandparents next to her. She fakes a smile, "Hey Granny, Pop Pop. When did you guys get here?" Donna and Eric give each other a glance before looking back at their granddaughter. Anne-Marie sighs, "It's nothing to worry about I swear."

Before either Donna or Eric could say anything, Jonah walks into the house. "Anne-Marie…" He exhales, "I'm so sorry about my mom. I shouldn't have brought you there."

Anne-Marie, still tear-stricken, lets out a sigh. "What do you have to apologize for? You didn't do anything wrong." Jonah sits on the couch and strokes her cheek. "I brought you there in the first place. I know what my mommy's like and I stupidly thought I could help make things right and…"

Anne-Marie shakes her head and pulls Jonah in for a hug. Eric and Donna watch and think back to the initial things they have to deal with when it came to Kitty. Hell even after almost forty five years of marriage and having grandchildren, they still have to deal with her controlling ‘I-know-best’ attitude.

"I love you so much, okay? You're my wife and I'll always be by your side. No matter what." Jonah whispers. Anne-Marie nods, "I love you too Jonah. Come here." They share a brief kiss before letting their foreheads touch.

"Hey." Anne-Marie and Jonah look at Eric and Donna. "I don't want to be nosy but I'm guessing this has something to do with mother in law drama." Eric responds. Donna chimes in, "Been there. It isn't a coincidence that it took fifteen years to call your Gigi 'mom'." Even after Kitty began to work for and earn her forgiveness, that incident along with other things had really affected their relationship.

"Fifteen?" Anne-Marie exclaims. She lets out a scoff, "And I thought my mother-in-law drama was bad, but yours takes the cake. Then again Gigi did call Gran-Gran a 'slut' and a 'red-haired tramp', so that makes sense. Eric nods, "Yeah. Me and your grandmother also have a similar experience with your Gigi Kitty."

Jonah exhales and turns to Anne-Marie, "I'll cut her off. We don’t have to go see her for dinner or lunch anymore." Anne-Marie shakes her head, "No Jonah!" Even though she has issues with Jo, she knows how close Jonah is with her. "You don't have to do that. She's still your mom." Jonah strokes his wife's face. "And you're my wife. You have to know I'll do anything for you."

A mischievous grin forms on Anne-Marie's face, "I love when you call me your wife. Say it again." Jonah's grin then, mirrors hers. "My wife. You're my drop dead gorgeous and intelligent wife."

Eric coughs awkwardly, "Okay, that's our cue to leave then." He gets up and lends a hand to Donna. "M'lady." Donna giggles and takes her husband's hand before walking off with him.
