Lordy okkkk! Psychonauts magical girl au rambling time! Today is about the basic premise and lore!
Its basically psychonauts, plot wise, but instead of psychics, they're magical girls. In this world, magical girls are able to use their psychic energy to transform and fight monsters and mainly against shatterings, which are basically what happens when a inner turmoil comes out, making their mental problems escape into the real world. They can either fix this by fighting the problems directly or go inside the mind to figure out the root causes.
(I will be using "magical girl" as a gender neutral term in this, but magical girls can be any gender)
While shatterings in non magical girls are easier to do, they're usually pretty harmless and involve less pain and destruction. Though if not treated properly after, it can cause some pretty bad psychological consequences. On the other hand, Shatterings in magical girls are harder to do, but its a longer and more painful process. Instead of just a part of the mind turning them into a little creature, the entire mind transforms the magical girl and warps the area around, turning it into a twisted version of their mental world. The difference is a disdain from glitter force versus a witch from madoka magica. Maligula was possibly the most violent and powerful shattering of current history, almost fully engulfing the entire country and having to be defeated by the psychic 6. She didn't survive the fight... or did she?
While most magical girls have their own little areas and territories where they fight against these shatterings, The psychonauts are a magical girl organization that dabbles in both fighting against more severe shattering and in espionage.
Magical girls can do magic without them, but they can also create small charms, simply called gems, that integrate into a special wearable object and help them transform and use their wands. Wands can change to use different abilities (IE Hammer for Psi-punch, Gun for psi-blast, balloon/ball for levitation) (Fun fact, more skilled levitators, Like Milla, can gain wings!) Their transformations, especially your first ever, mostly stem from their own style and mentality, but it can be modified mostly through styling and practice.
Despite the service of magical girls, many see them as being dangerous. Some believe they cause the shatterings themselves, some believe their ablities come from the devil, some believe they are witches who can curse people.

Is that REGULUS BLACK we can see entering the Ministry of Magic? Our records tell us that they were born on 19 OCTOBER and are an EIGHTEEN year old, PUREBLOOD who currently works as UNEMPLOYED. Some have said that they can be described as being CALCULATING, POLITE & SCRUPULUS, however, they also see themselves as being ZEALOUS, NAIVE & JEALOUS. Apparently, HE looks a lot like THOMAS DOHERTY, whoever that is, and if they had to pick a side in the war, they would choose to join THE DEATH EATERS.
Tumblr media
hi hello, i am notoriously awkward in these but i’m asbury! 26, she/they pronouns (either works, i’m not picky) and est! this is a bit long and i definitely did go overboard but please enjoy this absolutely dumpster fire of a kid! i apologize in advance if he’s an asshole to and/or tries to stab your character.
Tumblr media
basics.
001. full name. regulus arcturus black
002. name meaning.           regulus ( latin ): the brightest star in the leo constellation and one of the brightest stars in the galaxy; prince, little king.           arcturus ( greek ): the brightest star in the boötes constellation and the fourth brightest star in the night sky; guardian of the bear.
003. nicknames. his family has been known to call him reg or reggie but he hates nicknames of any sort. calling him a nickname is a surefire way to end up with a knife to the gut or a wand to the throat.
004. gender + pronouns. cismale; he/him.
005. age. eighteen, born october 19, 1961.
006. blood status. pureblood.
007. sexual orientation. homosexual ( closeted )
personality.
001. zodiac. libra.
002. mbti. intj-a
003. enneagram. type six, the skeptic.
004. moral alignment. chaotic neutral.
005. temperament: melancholic.
006. archetype. the wild card.
007. element. water.
008. personality traits.           positive. polite, scrupulous, calculating, insightful.           neutral: shrewd, old-fashioned, unpredictable, ambitious.           negative: zealous, haughty, naïve, jealous.
affiliation.
001. parents.           walburga black           orion black
002. siblings.           sirius black ( estranged )
003. extended family.            bellatrix lestrange, andromeda tonks, narcissa black ( cousins )           alphard black ( uncle )           various members of the house of black
004. relationship status. single.
005. allegiance. death eaters.
006. pets. a black turkish angora cat named midnight.
magical stats.
001. wand.            silver lime wood.           10 and ¾ inches.           dragon heartstring.           unyielding.
002. boggart. sirius dying by his hand.
003. patronus. non-corporeal.
004. amortentia. the pages of an old book, kerosene, black tea and honey, and the smell after a thunderstorm.
character tropes.
001. hidden heart of gold.
002. break the haughty.
003. affably evil.
004. wake up call.
005. while rome burns.
006. wouldn’t hit a girl.
007. motive decay.
008. beware the polite ones.
009. green-eyed monster.
key information.
001. he’s hardly had a conversation with his brother in years and often forgets how easy it is for them to get under each others skin.
002. he cares nothing for his cat, midnight. she was a gift from his uncle alphard for his birthday to teach him responsibility as the future heir but he overheard alphard tell walburga that he was too detached from emotion and needed something to care for.
003. he was almost a hat stall, with the sorting hat taking four minutes and thirty-seven seconds to sort him. anytime he thought about being separated from sirius, he panicked but anytime the sorting hat tried to put him in a house that wasn’t slytherin, he panicked more out of fear for what his mother may say or do. in the end, he chose slytherin to make her proud.
004. he tried to befriend the marauders for the first few years, but eventually grew to seeing them as the people who stole his brother. out of the entire group, he hates james the most.
005. he refuses to hurt sirius, but he has no qualms about hurting the people close to sirius to cause him pain that way.
006. he plays violin and piano and often writes his own music.
007. he joined the death eaters after sirius ran away, because he figured this was the best he had to a family who wouldn’t abandon him.
008. oftentimes, he’ll cause strife just for the hell of it and can’t always pull himself away from the edge, though he does consider himself more sane than some of his fellow death eaters.
009. he’s never been kissed and hasn’t come to terms with being gay yet.
010. hospitals freak him out though he’ll never admit to it, because having fear is a weakness.
wanted connections.
001. death eaters. whether its competition within the ranks, being sent out on missions together, friends within the organization.
002. people he’s threatened. he doesn’t go out of his way to really bother people unless they’ve wronged him or pressed too far into his personal business but he carries a knife on him and is a little trigger happy, so people he’ll have pulled a knife on.
003. an arranged fiancée. he’s very, very gay, but knows his duty as the heir and only legitimate son of the black family tree. he knows that sooner or later, he’ll end up getting married and be expected to have kids to perpetuate the bloodline, but it’s not what he wants. he just knows better than to say anything and is surprised he made it out of hogwarts without being engaged.
004. more to come !

2, 4, 5, pick any you want to answer
Ooooh, thank you for the ask!! <3 <3 <3  2. What's a character that you dislike? Dislike for writing reasons? Alex, i get why they integrated her with the Jody plotline to set up Wayward Sisters, but honestly i would’ve preferred to spend that time developing Claire further (and honestly, i did not get anywhere near enough Claire & Jody, OR have Claire & Donna do a hunt???? Iconic. Can you imagine???)  Dislike because they’re terrible in-universe? I feel like the common answer here would be John. The neglect and child abuse is just difficult to see past, especially given the long-term effects his actions have on both of his sons (and the various people they then go on to interact with). I just. I don’t like John Winchester.  4. What spinoff would you have liked from the show? THE BANES TWINS. Twigs, Twine, and Tasha Banes would have been a phenomenal backdoor pilot AND i think there was a lot of opportunity there to have further exploration into magic as a concept. I also just really loved Max and Alicia, and i think there was so much opportunity to delve further into those characters and their relationship and dynamics, especially the plot that gets set up with Max having damned himself to bring Alicia back.
Also potentially fantastic opportunity to have like, a different atmospheric vibe for the show. I may be misremembering but i think when they call Mary they mention being in Louisiana, and i like the idea of contrasting a sort of southern gothic backdrop with Max and Alicia as these very modern characters, both aesthetically and in terms of who they are. Being really cognizant of the role of race and sexual/gender identity in how they occupy space in (many predominantly white) small towns and suburban areas. The conflicts and insecurity that sometimes results from them traveling areas where they aren’t safe, not because of monsters but because of other humans. It’s a more explicitly dark take on the supernatural-americana-road trip vibe, because it’s very much outright suffused with this country’s terrible struggle with racism. In fact, there would definitely be opportunities to examine the history and legacies of concepts within the genre that have really racist connotations--the glorification of pre-civil war america, the legacy of segregation, even, i think in season 2 of the Max and Alicia Banes series that exists in my head, moving to other locations set in the midwest, west coast, and the north and exploring and contrasting how these issues are different and the same. I mean, racism certainly isn’t exclusive to the south, and in some ways i think it’s more insidious in places where people think prejudice is either gone, at least where they are, or that it’s not their/a problem.
And i mean here’s the thing too right, Max is a witch, Alicia technically isn’t human. The big problematic element of hunting as a white paramilitary fantasy eradicating “the other” can be subverted if we (”we” lol this is all in my head, @kripke like i’m the showrunner now) correctly handle how their identities 1) impact their approach to hunting and b) we reconsider/reframe the power dynamics. Max and Alicia don’t hunt on the fringes of society, seeking out monsters that threaten traditional family values/structures, their hunting focuses on targeting monsters that abuse the power they hold over others. And more often than not, that kind of power is derived from institutions (everyone from the man that abuses his wife and kids to the pharma CEO insider-trading), which often not just permit, but actively facilitate the abuse of power in order to preserve it (and the existing order). I think what makes a monster is not being an “other” (it can’t be, if our protagonists are “others” but are not monsters), but rather having power and using that power to exploit weaker/less powerful individuals. The natural foil that Max and Alicia provide is to show people using their power to protect others, especially the vulnerable/institutionally disadvantaged.
At the same time, i think they’re both a lot of fun, and the show would definitely have some lighthearted elements to allow the characters to develop through positive experiences as well as through struggle. For Max, I’d say a long-term, slowburn love interest, and for Alicia i could see two directions, one could be a mentor-figure (as a means of exploring and later reconciling how Alicia felt disconnected from her mother, in some ways, because she doesn’t have magic) kinda cast in a similar mold as Rowena (who i love). Another potential option is a bestie, personally i think there should be more representations of positive female friendship in tv and movies, and i really think it could be interesting for Alicia to bond with another non-human character (maybe there’s dramatic tension between her and Max because he brought her back and she’s unsure what that means for her personhood to be contingent on his magic, and we have a character going through a parallel struggle with notions of personhood, free will, and control of one’s own life).  But, of course, they will never make this show.  Sorry, this one turned into a really long answer because once i started thinking about this i had to write out my thoughts.  5. Favourite character that appeared in only 1 episode? I mean. Hester. Iconic homophobic queen, she told Dean that the very touch of him corrupts, from the moment Castiel laid a hand on him in hell, he was lost. She was onscreen for like 70 seconds, dropped That Line, and then died. Seriously who the fuck wrote that dialogue???  Dealer’s choice: 26. Cutest scenes in the show? I already wrote you an entire essay no one wanted about the secret spinoff that lives in my head starring the Banes twins. So. I’ll try to keep this short(ish).  Tombstone, Dean and Cas in the car, with the hat, i made you watch it? Cas introducing himself as agent Val Kilmer. Just. Overall a scene that was so soft and dorky and sweet.  Any scene involving Cas and Jack together. I love their dynamic and sometimes i cannot believe they really gave the gay angel a baby.  Full disclosure, I am a Cas girl (gender neutral), but I love Dean. So much. Any scene where he’s interacting with kids (Dead in the Water, the scenes with Ben, the scene where he takes Jack fishing) honestly just feels so heartbreakingly sweet. Elder sister syndrome really is being baby crazy but also not having kids because you’re like, too unstable for them.
Anyway thank you for the ask!! <3

Deca-Dence 5 - 6 | Moriarty 3 - 4 | Yashahime 4 - 5 | Maou-jou 4 | I7 s2 5 (22) | Akudama 4 - 5 | HypMic 5 - 6 | Taiso Samurai 4 | HPGC 4
Deca-Dence 5
“…cannon won’t ignite in time!” The subbers spell cannon as “canon” later as well.
Off to the cliffside, where Kaburagi goes to die…
Deca-Dence 6
“Maybe someone intervened.” – I think Minato did, somehow.
This Death Dive reminds me of Wipeout.
Moriarty 3
I once made up a quote that goes, “When life detests you, fight back.” I think it’s also roughly along the lines of advice Albert needs.
I remembered an odd line from Macbeth: “Brother, he has killed me!” Seriously, Moriarty is scarier than some actual horror anime, I swear…Update: It’s actually “he has killed me, Mother!”, but same impact.
I had my hands over my mouth from the moment the fire began. That’s how intense this is.
This ED…doesn’t sound like an ED. It sounds like the OP for a different anime, like Joker Game or something. Also, having Saito Soma as Gentaro and Moriarty…is a bit unsettling because they have a lot of overlap but one’s basically the evil twin of the other.
Yashahime 4
“…was raised here…”
“…we can…”
I felt a heart twinge when I saw Towa tear up…man, it’s been years since I last dealt with Inuyasha properly.
“…nights where I can’t fall asleep.” – So…you’ll play it a lot then, Setsuna.
Oh, so Kirara is a nekomata? I never knew until now.
Kikyo!
According to the mythology, the kirin rules over the middle…so why is Kirinmaru the monster in the east?
Is “s***” unwarranted here? I didn’t have the volume on, so I don’t know…Going back, I think Moroha said “kuso”, but it’s still kinda weird to have a swear word in a mostly family-friendly series in a slot near Detective Conan. (Then again, Detective Conan is where I learnt “kuso” from…so my standards are probably not as up-to-scratch as they should be.)
Rin! People keep saying Rin is the mother of the girls and it’s basically the only conclusion that could be done, considering the relationship the two had…but it’s still kind of squick…(Says a person who has no problem with SGRS s2’s ending.)
Update: Someone on ANN said the teacher’s name (Osamu Kirin) being similar to Kirinmaru is sketchy and I agree.
Maou-jou 4
There’s no pun for Rocket Turtle…that’s kinda startling, actually.
I’m not going to translate the eyecatches anymore. Seems they were actually translated in the manga and someone just copies them over or something.
I’ve seen some characters use wa when they really aren’t that feminine. However, the voice Suwabe uses for the Sorceror leads me to believe this guy really is trying to be feminine, even if in just a vocal capacity.
…aw, no puns here too.
Oh no, the seal…!
…hmm? The Scissors Sorceror’s info is…we’re not allowed to look at it. That’s what the red text says.
…my brain exploded for a second when I suddenly heard jazz music. It’s a Detective Conan parody! *screams*
Iina! doesn’t really mean “Lucky!” It means more like “cool!” or “It’s good, isn’t it?”
I7 s2 5
I missed these boys!
I like the Kinako transition. It’s cute.
I don’t really like it when Tenn looks at the screen…it gives me 1st person cam vibes.
Why is Tsunashi being called “this”, anyway?
Oh yeah…mensore = youkoso = welcome.
Uh oh…is Yuki actually evil???
Riku (earth) vs. Tenn (heaven). Hmm.
I still can’t believe they don’t believe Gaku is the soba guy. It’s so obvious!
Chikuzen-ni.
Someone on staff ships Gaku and Tsumugi together…hmm…
Oh! So this is DESTINY, huh? I’ve probably heard it on Spotify before, but I don’t recognise it by sheer sound like I do HypMic. (Then again, the half-year off the airwaves probably really hurt I7, man…)
Akudama 4
Say what you will about how bad Funi translations can get…they’re definitely entertaining!
Geesh, Doctor gets all the sexy shots, but Brawler gets all the ab shots. Can I get a sexy Courier shot…?
“…she’s right.” – There’s a lot of dialogue here, so…uh, who’s “she” in this case?
What’s a “bro fro”?
Wow, Brawler, talk about being punched into next Tuesday…(partially joking)
Swindler’s face, LOL. (I know she’s an ordinary gal, but calling her “Swindler” is shorter to type.)
I remember reading around and people agree Swindler works at the Seal Centre.
The shark and bunny’s shirts say things like “Kanto/Kansai”, “earth, air/water” and “pollution/clean” during their montage.
“feminist” – Uh, ex-squeeze me?! Feminism does not equal “ladies first” or “going easy on ladies”. Update: I went and listenend to it and although one of my ears is mysteriously almost constantly plugged these days, I’m fairly sure Doctor did not say “feminist” (in katakana). Update 2: Then I listened to it again and…I’m not sure anymore.
LOL, Hoodlum hit the in-series camera. With his face.
Oh, vault = garage or storage. Right, how did I not know that?
Cat, nooooooooooooooooo! Don’t die!
HypMic 5
After the two “darker” divisions, it seems almost strange to not have a “dark” introduction about the seedy underbelly of alt. future Japan…
Oh, my gosh. That’s Ichijiku on the phone.
The studio has the word “drops” on it.
Lemme guess: Neither hand!...Yup.
The only spoiler I know for this ep. is it’s a Halloween episode, and “Ramuda ruins Halloween”. That quote is way too subjective to mean anything, though…
…hmm, Gentaro doesn’t say “shousei” in that sentence involving “this humble bard” (not that I heard, but one of my ears is mysteriously plugged after I stayed up late browsing Twitter on my phone – don’t tell anyone that, though! They’re not meant to know!). Gentaro is not a humble bard (although that would translate “shousei” quite correctly in the Shakespearean), he’s an author.
LOL, that “ding!”
Gentaro actually says “ghostbusters” in katakana, LOL.
I almost thought this Shinjuku man was Doppo…but no, this Aoyama Cemetery exists. It has nice cherry blossoms.
The “dun dun dun” soundtrack is great. It really sets the atmosphere.
Gentaro really is an idiots’ minder, just as I used to characterise him. (Then the FP and M manga and developments regarding Ramuda being evil changed my mind.)
I-Is this just gonna be an episode of FP being scared and Ramuda yelling? It’s fun for a bit, but when you’re stopping to analyse every few seconds, Ramuda’s voice is gonna get annoying eventually…
Kurosu seems to be a cross between Jyushi and Doppo.
This ep…makes FP look money-crazy. Dice is only money-crazy when he’s broke…because of course you would be…but the others aren’t.
That rock track that plays when FP hand out flyers is cool!
Are they…eating squid?...Welp, squid jerky. I’d say I’m correct.
Oh, so they’re all street photographers? Not just Tom?
I was wondering…how would the “tie to a different division” occur in episode 5, considering episode 6 is where the plot really kicks in? Turns out…they tie back to BB, which is not a thing I was expecting at all.
BB have a BB tablet…makes sense, because I think Hypster have iPhone cases for each division.
Oh, they’re planting the seeds of Ramuda’s ability here, so to speak. By knowing what Hypnosis Mics are capable of doing, you can see the building blocks of Rap Abilities as well.
Okonbanwa! The extra O is meant to make things formal, but only in front of nouns (sometimes it’s “go”, e.g. goshujin), so it’s Ramuda being overly formal to be cutesy and unconventional.
*lightbulb goes off in head* It makes sense that the group affiliated with illusions and randomness does the Halloween episode, actually.
…Yargh! Of course all these onee-sans are FP stans!...*lightly touches temple, as if to get rid of a headache* I should’ve known.
The new song is “Shibuya Ghost Night” by Tokyo Health Club, Yuki “T-Groove” Takahashi and Yuma Hara.
*stops video before the darn airhorn sounds* Thank goodness…hey, isn’t this quote from Magical Girl Spec-Ops Asuka…?
This episode is very seasonal, but doesn’t really make sense outside of airing on Halloween. C’mon, couldn’t you have given us a Sasara appearance instead of having Ramuda yell down the house…? I knew the FP episode was going to be either lighthearted with a dark undercurrent, like the BB ep (considering we haven’t gotten to Ramuda dying yet), or full-on lighthearted, but…I somehow wonder if the staff had an empty spot labelled “Fling Posse episode” due to COVID and went, “Okay, it airs on Halloween this year, let’s make it Halloween-inspired”…or something. Also, I feel Gentaro got the short end of the stick here.
Update: As for yakuwarigo, Ramuda trends towards the feminine side, which is not something I noticed until my groupwork partner pointed it out to me. The message in this episode has a “yone”, which proves that point even further. “Dayo~n” is a variant of the gender-neutral “yo” ending. Meanwhile, I have game samples that prove Dice uses “ze” like BB/MTC, while Gentaro uses “yo” and desu/masu like Jakurai, so it was really Ramuda anyone wanted to pay attention to since his speech patterns are the most feminine-leaning, possibly due to his extensive hanging out with ladies. (I once read a Tofugu post on how non-binary people deal with language that said if you hang out with ladies a lot, you take on feminine yakuwarigo and if you hang out with guys a lot, you do the same in that direction, but I clearly remember Ramuda using “sa”, which is a slightly male-leaning ending.)
Taiso Samurai 4
There’s something in the background which stops me from listening to it and one of my ears is blocked, but I gotta find out what Tackey was saying about the NHK Cup (the joke, I mean). Update: So I think it’s ninja/nukihara/kekkou, but I may have heard that wrong due to my blocked ear…I should get someone to clean it out properly.
Here’s the YoI monologue about competitions again. <- (neutral on it) Also, NHK is in English letters/romaji in the term “NHK Cup”, but the “Cup” isn’t (it’s in kanji).
Sekigahara had a huge historical battle.
Huh? This episode’s called “Samurai Musume (daughter)”, so…where did “Battling Samurai” come from? That’s one of the previous episodes, right?
Selfies, before they were cool.
I was wondering if Leo actually calls Rei “Rachel” like he calls Jotaro “Joe”…and he does. I just haven’t paid much attention to the audio, that’s all.
The Battle of Chibi? Never heard of it until now, but the Battle of Red Cliffs is the same thing.
Leo Naruto runs…LOL.
If Rei was in 4th grade in 2002…are we going to see the characters in the present in the end? She would be 28 in 2020.
I guess I should’ve guessed from “hat trick”, but a Bergkamp trap is related to soccer.
There’s a random Japanese-sounding track in the background…didn’t expect that.
A cemetery…on the day after Halloween.
“Grandma’s place” = the bar…Ohhhhhhhhhh. I was wondering, didn’t the grandma and Rei live together? Then it all came together.
Jim Beeam (sic), LOL.
I wonder, are Tackey and Ayu dating like he asks?
Gotta love a man in a suit! *chef’s kiss*
Yashahime 5
Who’s this Tokotsu guy again…? Also, the “ja” in Jakotsumaru means “young”.
Oh, Myoga. It’s been a while.
Can there be 4 Perils when there’s only 3 of them…?
Well, it makes sense that a dog demon would have demon fleas…in a sense.
Why is “trying to swallow up this world and turn it into a degenerate age” (or whatever Kirinmaru’s aim is) so vague? You could say the present is already an age of mass degeneracy…
Maybe the Dream Butterfly took Moroha’s memories…?
Wait, why is Myoga only allowed to drink Moroha’s blood when she puts on the rouge?
So this is an arhat. Also, aren’t morals an Anglophone ideal imported into Japan and the rest of Asia? That’s what separates Towa from Setsuna.
Akudama 5
This drone definitely won’t come in handy at all…(sarcastic)
There’s an Evangelion feel to these “masks”…
That box is like Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs! It’s great!
I like how the kids jump to the potential fact (?) this is a Swindler trick.
You can see Courier’s bike in the background when the bunny says “…and I mean everything.”
*Knights of Sidonia music starts playing* Search! And! Destroy! *record scratch as music stops*
I think this little discussion between Courier and Swindler will go down in Akudama Drive history as one of my favourite moments because it’s the little conversations that count. Also…does Courier have a mechanical hand, or is that just me thinking weird things…? Is that a glove?
Ooh, scars. Sexy. (On the Executioner Master, at least.)…Now I get why the guy wears that mouth covering.
HypMic 6
Halfway through the season already…? Yikes, how time flies. By the way, my assignment’s come and gone so I don’t need to focus on it anymore.
Hmm? Why did the subbers put “Prime Minister” when Ichijiku merely says “yes”…?
Wait, 1st question: how does one sign up for a rap battle? I don’t think that’s ever been answered. 2nd question (well, not a question): Dice is paying attention to Otome now…
I’m fairly sure that red brick warehouse was just that…as in the Red Brick Warehouse in Yokohama, which was also featured in Bungou Stray Dogs. Update: Oh, it’s (partially) a shopping mall…? I didn’t know that until now.
See, I told you they’re (Tom, Iris and Rex) probably foreigners…
That one shot of Jakurai? *chef’s kiss* Beautiful. Give me a million of ‘em. (Okay, I’m kidding to some degree, but I can’t help staring at it. Jakurai’s just too pretty…)
“Tweet-like lyrics”? Eh? When was Twitter a collective pessimist?
Oh, that’s basically the scene from the drama track. Where the heck is Jakurai fishing though…? I always imagined it to be at a river or a pier, not some concrete complex. Update: According to a user on Twitter, the fishing place is called “Ichigaya Fishing Centre”. It is, as you would expect, found in Shinjuku. Apparently, even Osomatsu-san featured the place...which would explain why it looks vaguely familiar to me.
Wow, I can’t believe how upfront they’re being about Ramuda breaking up TDD.
Ramuda thought in his deep voice…I almost didn’t recognise it for a second. It doesn’t even sound like Shirai. It sounds more like…Hayami, in fact.
“F*** yeah!” - …and they’re still going with the F bomb. Keep being you, subbers, keep being you.
That shot of Saburo in a dimly-lit room almost looks like the SR card in ARB, except in that one he has his headphones on (and might be outside, to my memory).
Oh, so the round thing really is Ichiro’s ring. It’s got an “I” on it too, i.e. the Roman numeral for one.
*Ichiro explains what happened to TDD from his and Samatoki’s side* - I don’t think we’ve ever seen the story from Ichiro’s or Samatoki’s perspective enough to know either thought this (or this way).
“Jiro! Saburo! Let’s go!” - …and Tom’s just taking photos as they leave, LOL.
I didn’t expect the TsudaKen guy to be back again, really.
Well, if this Google route is to be believed, “Sadamezuka’s soul” only lasts about 30 minutes by car crossing from one point to the other, hence Jiro’s remark.
Googling “Toyotama” and “Toyotama Line” gets you…Ghost of Tsushima links…?
…hmm. I’m not listening to it on a hugely loud volume, so I can’t quite tell what the pun is, but I think the word for “monk” in this case is “bouzu”. Then what’s the word for “electric dynamo”…? Update: The pun, according to Takahisa Maeyama, is Erekiteruteru Bouzu.
That ticking thing was really effective in terms of the song…but sasuga HypMic. Things went ka-blammo again.
So we’re probably going to see BB’s first DRB round next ep…or Matenrou doing another takedown similar to ep. 3. Or both. Both is good. (Or it could be the FP/M side of things, much like we got the BB/MTC side of things here.)
...Uh, shouldn’t that be “dawn”? The anime’s generally been very good about this (aside from the obvious typo in the BB logo), but…welp, they’ve done it now.
Update: The LOVE you see Hifumi and Doppo near is this one.
Update 2: As for the yakuwarigo, it…turns out, to no one’s surprise, it stays oddly consistent across all media, although individual treatment of the characters can differ depending on the author.
HGPC 4
Ooh, is this Element of Light?
Fate/Stay PreCure! Here we come!
Moriarty 4
Why is the “to” capitalised? (Is that even capitalised?)
Quinine.
I kind of knew the grapefruit and the heart condition and/or quinine would be relevant somehow…and boy howdy, was I right! I just didn’t really know what it was going to do, that’s all.
I thought the ED didn’t match very well, but looking at the translated lyrics…now it kind of makes sense.

If you had to guess Meyer’s plot trajectory for Leah and Seth, what do you think she intends for them? I’m pretty sure Leah will imprint on a next-gen kid, for example. :(
SM speaks of Renesmee and Leah as future narrators, which seems to imply, to me at least, that their stories are linked in some way.  Signs point to Jacob and Renesmee having amazing children (probably twin girls, as they run in Jacob’s family on the family tree, and why include that if you’re not going to use it, right? But possibly other children in addition to the twin girls) and some Final Showdown with the Volturi that Leah, Renesmee and/or JakeNess’ super amazing children will be the deciding factor in defeating the Volturi (who are evil, I guess?? instead of the Lawful Neutral they seemed to be initially–in Forever Dawn, they didn’t even kill anyone. Victoria was killed, but by the wolves, not the Volturi!). I think this final showdown will happen because SM was adamant that no one could die in BD the movie that didn’t die in the book, because she needed many of these characters later for future stories she had in mind. She’s said that she has outlines of future books.Leah’s almost certain to imprint :/ the fact that SM won’t answer questions about whether or not she can seems to imply it will be a major plot point. If Jacob and Renesmee have a son, then for sure Leah will imprint on him. If they only have twin girls, then it’s probably Seth and Embry who will imprint. Of course, the wolfpires being girls doesn’t preclude Leah from imprinting on one because wlw exist, but SM’s not going to write that story. Personally, I don’t want Leah to imprint on ANYONE (or anyone to imprint on her), of any or no gender; I want her to choose her life for herself even if that means making mistakes or enduring some less-than-great relationships. That’s what life is about and the imprinting short cut just seems so artificial to me. Leah deserves The Real Thing, made all the sweeter for the effort and growth it might take for her to find it.The other fandom theory is Leah/Nahuel.  Which … I could see SM doing that, too. Some love triangle with Jacob/Nessie/Nahuel and then SM pairing the spares at the end again, but I personally don’t really think it’s a good idea because again, I want Leah to choose her own life on her own terms, and having to be immortal forever because she imprints on a hybrid doesn’t seem like the life she’d choose. Plus, unlike Nessie, Nahuel IS venomous, which is another layer of incompatibility.Seth’s gonna imprint on little Sarabella or her twin sister almost certainly. :/ At least he’s cool with vampires and the wolf life? I don’t want him to suffer the indignity of imprinting on a baby and all the problematic ideas that go along with that, but at least he’s more comfortable with this world of monsters and magic than Jacob and Leah are so it’s marginally less awful? Ideally Leah would just peace out of La Push/Forks for a bit and find herself, find someone to love, find a found family out in the real world, find a career or some other sort of fulfillment. Come back home for Charlie and Sue’s wedding, or Billy’s funeral or if there’s some big crisis and Jacob or Sam had to call her back to help and she’s just grown so much while everyone else has mostly frozen–that’s the price of immortality, after all. Seth would stay his sunny self and help really smooth over the differences between the wolves and vampires. The imprint sort of forced them together but again, it feels fake. Seth’s open-hearted understanding was real and so much more interesting because of it.

not to be obnoxious on main but i just watched The Wolverine and I, who is not an actual fan and unfamiliar with X-Men lore, have quite a few thoughts
• WHY DID MARIKO AND LOGAN SLEEP TOGETHER first off, she grew up with stories of him being The Great Protector/Beast right? And true, she was emotionally overwhelmed after being serial kidnapped and having the Yakuza chase them and her grandfather dying but?? Deciding to sleep with a Man who is the Protector from your grandpa's stories?? WHEN you already had a perfectly good relationship with your childhood friend who you've wanted to marry since you were kIDS (and I'm assuming they've lived together too given the house they hid away in Nagisa?? Was it in Nagisa or am I remembering incorrectly, sorry! BuT)
• It would make more sense for Mariko to look towards Logan as the Steady, father figure she needed and lacked, the Protector and he liTERALLY IS THE PROTECTOR HE'S BEEN SAVING HER and I would have liked a scene where she just ,, breaks into tears after an excruciatingly long and confusing day, and he is there for her, he cares for her as he would a younger girl, a dAUGHTER PERHAPS
and that leads me to my nEXT POINT
• Logan's character arc lands him right where he started. As The Wolverine. I would have liked a more in-depth analysis of his Soldier mentality. How he kept fighting that, and instead at the end of the movie he embraces that. The thing is, he does so, at the cost of not learning anything. He's back to being a Lone Wolf Soldier. For what?
but imagine
The idea of Logan being the Protector is repeated throughout the film— take it a step further, it fits his arc. he's so tired. He's so very tired, and he doesn't think he deserve love, any goodness, anymore. He sees himself as a monster, a Soldier, who kills on command, and will do nothing but kill, even his loved ones. Jean Grey embodies this fear.
Yet here he is, hailed as a blessed magical being, a Protector of the Yashida family. Despite his claws. Despite the blood on them. Can he actually be good? Him, a weapon?
Give me a scene where Mariko sees Logan in a different light and realizes he is the sacred Protector of her family.
Imagine Logan embracing that role of Protector, and going from Lone Wolf Soldier who will die alone one day, to the Protector. Protector to the X-Men, to Xavier's school, to his loved ones.
It would be a nice little bow, and could circle back to the duality of him being a Soldier, and him wanting an ordinary life. An ordinary life implies a family.
A family is something I imagine Jean Grey not wanting. I can imagine this hurting Logan. Terribly.
imagine, while he holds a sobbing Mariko, he sees a child missing her family. Imagine that while he stays with her in the tiny fishing village and lives in her quaint, quiet home, he catches a glimpse of what domesticity would be like. Give me a scene where Logan continually calls her Princess, in an endearing, fatherly way, because she is much younger than he. And she gains the fatherly love she lacks.
Give me a scene where he catches a glimpse of what having a daughter, a child, a family could be like. He wants that. So badly. Jean Grey didn't, and that broke him. He thought that she was right, he doesn't deserve a family because he will always, always do what he does best. Kill. Mercilessly. He is but a Soldier.
Then we go back to this quote. Soldiers wanting an honorable death. Samurai without a master, are without purpose and whatnot.
While this is a very Japanese, honor-centric concept, soldiers don't want an honorable death sometimes. Not Logan, in this head canon at least. What soldiers want is something to come home to. Something worth all the fighting, all the destruction, someone to hold their blood stained hands and tell them that they are still human, and loved. Capable of love.
Imagine Logan wanting to be able to cradle a tiny human in his arms, his human, to look at him with innocence and not see the monster, but see their loving father. A father. A Protector. That is the purpose he wishes for.
Imagine him mother-henning the students at Xavier's. His gruff, burly self, being a mother hen. Being worried. Wanting everyone to be safe. Protector is a better fit to his personality than Lone Wolf.
Just,, ugh.
Give this man something to live for.
Ugh.
But back to blunter matters. If this headcanon worked out, Mariko wouldn't have that weird dynamic of wanting to trust her childhood friend and now fiance, and wanting to save Logan, a guy she slept with at the final battle. And!!
so Logan's issue of letting Jean Grey go, were solved with a one night stand? With a barely legal child? She's what, in her 20's? Guys. Ladies. Theydies (I saw someone use this as a gender neutral alternative to ladies so?)
Pedophilic influences in society/the industry runs strong, just saying.
and?? With Yukiyo, obviously their dynamic works really well?? Despite it being platonic!! Him having her as his staunch friend, and almost younger sister, works really well?? I loved their dynamic, and their banter, and *gasp* there was more character development in there than the romantic relationship so??
also I wanted to see more of what Yukiyo and mariko's relationship and childhood was like. They could have been dating, that would have made sense, if a bit of a reach. Eh. Could have removed mariko's boyfriend entirely that way, made yukiyo decide between the family she owes her life to or Logan, with some pushing. And the line about her being a plaything? Sinister. A scene of what she thinks of that, of her childhood and her coming to terms with that role, paired with the genuine sisterhood she has with Mariko, would have been great honestly.
And uh ,, viper lady changed her outfit twice before the final battle, within the space of at least two hours so what was up with that?? To show more skin?? Like really. Fucking really. You wasted a really interesting character for the sale of sex appeal. Have her escape, she's smart and would've, instead of fighting to the death with Yukiyo. She would have been badass as a comeback villian in the next movie. And!! If she sheds her skin, can she be like mystique in that sense? Disguises galore, possibly.
tldr; in the words of my mother, who summarized it beautifully, the makers of this movie ' thought with their balls' not with their dick, no no, with their balls. Testosterone-filled balls. Where's the character arc dammit. Oh sure let's have them sleep together then never see each other again, haha one night stand is hot. Where was yukiyo at the end, I thought she was your body guARD DAMMIT WHERE IS SHE

Sugin Ryū
Tumblr media
INFO
Full Name: Suigin Ryū Age: 20-22 (default, varies by verse) Date of Birth: October 15th Ethnicity: Native of Hi no Kuni Orientation: Panromantic / Demisexual Gender: Cisgender Female Residence: Konoha; Kusunokizan Occupation: Regenerative surgeon in Konoha Hospital Kekkei Genkai: White Hands of Healing, River of Vitality Chakra Natures: Yin; Yang; Yin/Yang Blood Type: A- Location associations: Hi no Kuni; Konoha; Kusunokizan Team: N/A Rank: Sage
BIOGRAPHY
Ryū was born in a village in mountainous northeast Hi no Kuni known as Kusunokizan, wherein her clan was based. The clan, with the surname Suigin, had always been focused around medical ninjutsu and defensive barriers: a peaceful clan with no shinobi training. When the village was attacked when Ryū was only four by Iwa rebels, she remained the only survivor, found later by Hi no Kuni ANBU cleaning up the bodies.
Taken to Konoha, she was deemed unfit for adoption due to her kekkei genkai (the village wanting to keep her isolated as a ‘valuable resource’). When it came time to join the Academy, she refused, insisting to be trained solely at the hospital to hone her medical ninjutsu. The council relented, giving her private lessons for the basics in her village-assigned quarters when not training under other medics.
By age twelve, she was certified as a full-fledged medic after completing the necessary exams. Joining the staff full-time, she worked diligently to continue her work and further her training as she was able.
When Tsunade returned to Konoha, the Sannin admitted to recognizing Ryū as the daughter of someone she knew briefly before the girl’s birth. Given a new interest in her roots, Ryū put in a request to revisit her home village, wanting closure about her past. When she arrived, she found the ruins of her village, but also the singular dragon sage, Suigin, that had called the mountains home for centuries, and was the source of her line’s prestige. Desperate to further her training and learn more about her past, she decided to stay in the ruins of her home to receive the training she would have had, had the village never been destroyed…including her sennin state, barriers, and powerful medical ninjutsu.
She remained in Kusunokizan for nearly three years, returning shortly before Naruto when her teacher heard from the other sage, Gamabunta, that great change was coming over the land. Feeling she would be needed, she decided to return to the village to lend aid however she could. With fully-mastered medical ninjutsu and sage arts, she is a force to be reckoned with, comparable to Tsunade with her healing prowess, and capable of mighty defense with her barriers. Though she has no combat training, she can hold off most shinobi with her defensive techniques, never resorting to violence, but able to hold her own nonetheless.
PERSONALITY
Ryū is a rather muted individual, usually presenting as shy, quiet, and polite. She always uses honorifics unless previously asked not to, or if she has a very close, personal relationship where they are not needed. Caring and maternal, she abhors violence and confrontation, playing peacekeeper in volatile situations. She can be stubborn, especially when defending her beliefs and morals. Though she is usually level-headed, certain topics or situations can get a rise out of her temper, which is steely and cold (though it can be more fiery if she is physically confronted, or during other personal circumstances). If a loved one or innocent is threatened, she will not hesitate to face a foe to do what she can to protect them.
APPEARANCE
Ryū has white, wavy hair that falls to her mid-back (she usually wears it up in a high tail with framing locks around her cheeks and a tapered fringe while working - otherwise, it’s worn down), fair skin, and grey eyes. Her body shape is hourglass, with a C-/D chest. She stands at approximately 170 cm. Blood type is A. Birthday is October 15. She usually wears clothes in greyscale colors, with separate sleeves and a coat of her own design, alongside standard dark shirts and pants. A small pack is attached to her right leg, and carries medical supplies. She wears open-toed/open-heeled dark-grey boots that reach just below her knee. After completing her sage training and returning to Konoha, she had a tattoo of her clan crest put on her left shoulder blade, in order to always take a piece of home with her wherever she goes. It's simple black ink, about the size of a deck of playing cards.

VERSES
White Hands of Healing
Main canon verse. Leaving Ryū a virtual stranger to any other characters, this verse sees her as a blank slate for interactions and forming new bonds with muses. In this verse she's in the same age group as Itachi by default, but it can be adjusted as necessary. An orphan from the third shinobi war, she's taken back to Konoha and raised there to become a medic to make use of her bloodline. She eventually becomes a top-tier healer and sage after learning under her family's teacher, and otherwise lives out her days in Konoha. She has an optional child in this verse, Reika II, for next gen interactions.
Into the Abyss
Secondary canon verse. When Ryū and Obito have a chance meeting during the timeskip, it leads to a whirlwind romance that - though shallow at first - soon grows in both affection and danger. After the war, Obito survives, and after their share of struggles, they have a family of their own: a son, Reiji. But as happy and loving as the family is, the stigma against Obito remains... Ryū is three years younger than Obito in this verse.
What Remains
Secondary canon verse. Jiraiya, returning after the Kyūbi's rampage, discovers his daughter Ryū in Konoha. Deciding to stay, he takes her in and fulfills his role as Naruto's godfather, raising the pair of them as his own. Ryū later befriends Uchiha Itachi, the pair becoming childhood sweethearts. When Itachi later becomes Hokage as a peace deal with Konoha, the pair decide to get married and have a daughter, Usagi. Ryū is Itachi's age in this verse.
Ryū no Ryokan
Secondary canon verse. Ryū returns to her home village after the fourth war, and with Konoha's help, repairs the village and turns it into a mountain retreat for both wealthy guests and long-term patients from any land. She runs it alongside her master Suigin, finding giving her home new purpose and returning at last. Ryū is 22+ in this verse, but it can be adjusted.
Wild Child
Secondary canon verse. Ryū, the last survivor of Kusunokizan, isn't rescued by Konoha, and instead is raised by the dragon sage Suigin. Practically feral, she lives more as a dragon than a human up in the mountain peaks. Age can vary.
A Life Anew
Secondary canon verse. Ryū is taken from Konoha by her uncle, Ao, wanting to protect her from the world of shinobi. But the pair are later discovered by Jiraiya. Despite their bad blood, the men decide to use their common concern for Ryū to help raise her together outside Konoha. Ryū is Itachi's age in this verse.
A Light Amongst Shadows
Secondary canon verse. In this verse Ryū is the same age as Shisui (headcanoned as eight years older than Naruto). Mostly follows canon up to 699 - Ryū is found by Uchiha Manami, Shisui's mother, and the two children grow up as friends. After his apparent suicide, and later the massacre of the clan, Ryū steps up and helps raise Sasuke. She's lightly involved in other canon matters, and when Shisui is revealed to be alive after the war, they bond again and eventually marry and have a family. But not everyone is happy more Uchiha are alive...
Best Years of Your Life
A modern AU typically revolving around high school or college years. Kept vague for plotting! Age can vary.
Catch 'Em All
Pokémon verse. Ryū, having been raised by Hiruzen (Mr. Fuji) in Lavender Town, helps him take care of orphaned pokémon. But when the threat of Team Rocket looms, he has her take all of them to Fuchsia to be released into the Safari Zone reserve out of their reach. Armed only with her bonded pokémon, a shiny Dratini, she makes the journey alone, eventually becoming part of the staff and helping manage the park and protect its pokémon. Her team eventually consists of her Dragonair, Chansey, Charizard, Kingdra, Gyrados, and Rapidash. Age can vary.
Divine Light
Fantasy verse - based on original lore but can be adapted for more general fantasy threads. Ryū is a Lux el'ven, or light elf: one of the last of her kind after the wars. Able to heal, make barriers, and create portals in time, she wants to help rebuild the world of the el'ven and reforge the Elemental Council of the twelve elements to solidify peace. Age can vary.
Healing Waters and Scorching Flames
Avatar the Last Airbender verse. Ryū is a waterbender from the South Pole, from a small, isolated clan that focuses on healing. Age can vary.
Like Magic
Harry Potter verse. Ryū, a Hufflepuff, dreams of one day being a Healer like her mother was. Age can vary.
To Rule Them All
Royalty / Medieval verse. Ryū is the princess of a matrilineal line in the kingdom of Kusunokizan. A neutral state, there's pressures mounting from neighboring kingdoms to finally choose a side. Age can vary.
Of Monsters and Men
A modern monster verse based on original lore, but can be adapted for other verses. Ryū's default in this verse is a hybrid of snowy owl harpy and succubus, but I've also written her as a siren and a mermaid! Age can vary.
When Dead Walk
Zombie verse. Kept vague for plotting!
(Other verses are available upon request - please IM for more details!)

User enters the void to retrieve a single soul.
Snare (Shikake-sen) (Sennin jutsu)
Makes nature-based chakra tripwires that can alert her to physical movement. Is affected by distance - the further she is from the set lines, the weaker the signal until it disappears completely.

“If life were predictable it would cease to be life, and be without flavor.”
And what is life without consequences? A clean slate when we’re born, blessed with ignorance of what life truly has to offer. Our arrival into the world is often celebrated with laughter and joy, an attempt to hold off just how badly life can turn at any given moment and allow us to live in bliss. Moments, a word Theo learned to cherish at a young age. Happiness was often found in the Stebbins family, and though they had little they were rich with love and life.
Her mother the most motivating force in the family, and someone Theo loved and admired greatly. The woman could do it all, so full of joy, an abundance of energy, Theo’s personal Wonder Woman. As a unit, their family was a group to be admired, the picturesque Nuclear Family, untouchable. But if life were predictable, maybe there was something Theo could’ve done—she would’ve noticed the signs. How something menial like playtime wouldn’t have had her mother stopping to catch her breath before, how she slept in later than being the usual early morning riser with breakfast ready to go the second Theo trudged downstairs. How thin her mother looked every day, brow that began to furrow from masked pain.
Preventative, perhaps, if Theo had known. Cancer, vicious and a monster that wrecked her mother from the inside out. Terminal, caught too late, only months left to live. And while Theo and her father wept, she remembers her mother’s reaction specifically that still haunts her—elation. Maybe that’s when Theo’s anger began to bloom, make itself present in the otherwise gregarious girl. Angry for her mother, angry that life had chosen to corrupt someone so full of joy and happiness.
What was the point of even living? Their last month’s were spent as though nothing had changed, save for the dimmed energy levels, a shadow that hung above the Stebbins family. But her mother remained at peace, to which Theo often lashed out at her for, denial that wanted not to believe it was all for a reason, that life would so easily take away someone so precious to her with nothing to be done. Eventually, Theo’s mother needed to be transported to the Hospice Care, a permanent resident, where she’d check in but never check out. She’d grown to hate the smell within those walls, finding it artificial and fake, a presentation of medical miracles only to not be able to officially conjure them.
The idea of healing was a facade, wasn’t it? If you couldn’t cure the sick? ‘We’ll make her comfortable,’ they said, what was supposed to be a cue that it was time, as though Theo was just supposed to know that at such a young age. There weren’t enough words in the world to proclaim how she felt, how sorry she was to be so helpless, weakened in the presence of someone once so strong. “Don’t cry, keep your head held high. If you’ve learned anything from me, you’ll promise to live in the moment and live life to the fullest. Promise me you’ll keep chasing happiness, and above all take care of yourself and your father.”
Final words she didn’t take to heart, until gradually Theo watched her mother waste away into serene bliss. Sorrow lashed out, like a bird bursting from its cage—Theo’s emotions a whirlwind, like a slumbering giant, it caused the water in the IV to explode, the wind swirling around them from indoors. Magic. Much like fire, magic is a beautiful and raging thing, a power that needs to be handled with the greatest of care and treated with the utmost respect. That is the reason, after all, that wizards go to Hogwarts – to learn how to tame it.
For as with fire, if you play with magic, you can get burned. Something Theo learned upon being presented with her letter to Hogwarts, dropped from the Heavens themselves through an owl’s talons, as though her mother were giving Theo an opportunity to explore life herself. It was a tough decision, debating on leaving her father, but somehow, it was as though her parents had always known that Theo was special, unique, different from the rest of the children. How the lights seemed to shine a little brighter or dim ever so slightly when she cried. Small, insignificant details like that. It was a chance for Theo to learn about herself in a way they could never teach her or help her along.
This was something she needed to do herself. Terrified, and without a clue what she was getting herself into, Theo began her journey toward magic and becoming a witch. She learned about wands, magical creatures, candies, and the difference between the Wizarding World and the one she’d known. Muggleborn, what she was called, the so-called correct term that Theo noticed caused a spark of judgement in another’s eyes when uttered. But as warned, she kept her head held high, entering the gates of Hogwarts and attempting to find her path.
Mudblood. Another technical term, discriminatory and Theo learned that there was a great divide between her world and the new. But she wasn’t the type to shy away or let herself get knocked down for a word she didn’t understand or care to. Why couldn’t everyone just live their own lives without worrying about others they may not have associations with otherwise? An outsider’s point of view, surely frowned upon, but that didn’t mean Theo wasn’t going to cut loose and live in the moment. If anything, it only added to the chip on her shoulder.
Daring, brazen, her attitude toward life that was rare, a risk taker, often diving headfirst into classroom opportunities and those presented from the students. Theo was always testing her limits to the brink, both academically and non, all the while laughing maniacally along the way. If she got knocked down, she just got right back up again with a lesson learned, able to think of a different approach for the next time. It was why she was chosen as Chaser for the Gryffindor Quidditch team, pushing her speed and ability to handle a broom, catching the eyes of the coach. But her attitude and withheld anger often made her aggressive, a force to be reckoned with, a true nothing to lose attitude, formidable to her opponents. Anger she could tap into that made her ruthless when standing up to others, a warm optimistic attitude that made her a friend for life.
In dueling, academia, Quidditch, and even at parties. The life of the party, here for a good time and a long time, and not without a stash of alcohol in her trunk when the opportunity calls for it. But with loss came the desire to understand. A mistake she couldn’t correct before, one that she could try to do now. Potions was one of her favorite classes, and it was Theo’s mission in life to find a cure for cancer, something drinkable for Muggles without side effects, not for the fame or glory but simply out of a desire to help and heal the world.
She does it for her mother, she does it for the Muggles that are without the aide of magic in their everyday lives. The desire to understand makes her a star pupil, a brain that thirsts for knowledge and mystery of a world she wasn’t born into. And with a war brewing outside the castle walls, Theo is ready to battle if necessary. She wants to protect both worlds however way she can. After all, all life is worth living and fighting for.
WHAT ARE YOUR RELATIONSHIPS.
MARLENE MCKINNON: Drinking buddies, and a listening ear. REMUS LUPIN: Tutored by in Transfiguration, friendly with. HESTIA JONES: Feels attracted to, but admires from a distance. GRETA CATCHLOVE: Watches out for, enjoys her company. WALDEN MACNAIR: Doesn’t trust, rubs her the wrong way.

Commentary on the frequently discussed topic of Sayrus and his conflicts with sex and gender.
The skeletons of 'Trio'tale verses (TrioFell, Triotale, yahta yahta basically sayrus and all his alternates) with skeleton/experiment backgrounds have varying spectrums of 'sex'.
Their souls and bodies are amalgams based originally off humans, with of course the original intention being to create artificial humans.
Sayrus is genetically male (for the most part) if you sampled his bone marrow; his body is a direct correlation of gaster, sans and papyrus (and both sans and papyrus, too, were male).
however, the souls of all three skeletons were constructed from parts of The Fallen Humans. Papyrus' Soul, was constructed from Sina, "Bravery" who was a biological Hemophrodite and genderfluid; his sex spectrum is male-flux, as his body and soul are 3/4ths male, each. Sans soul was constructed from Susan, "Integrity" who was transgender. the biological component was male, but he's still a male-flux and capable of being classified as 'not completely male' because his soul labels him female 50% of the time.
imagine a scale, 1 to 100. 1 is female, 50 is neutral or both, 100 is male. is you were a skeleton and strictly 1, female, you’d be incapable of forming a penis and would be biologically female and your gender would be “girl” or “woman”. in a skeleton monster of the variety that makes up the ‘trio’tale type of skeleton monster its very rare to be 1 or 100. its far more likely to be anywhere in between, and those would be ‘flux’ or ‘flexible’, meaning capable of both genitalia and neither strictly female nor male, (in terms of sex, not gender). having no preference for either, you would most likely be closer to the center of this spectrum. you could be like callista and be completely nuetral, and be gender fluid, neither male, female, or male-flux or female-flux. Or you could be like Xayrus who is considered ‘female’, rating on the scale at a solid 3, but still capable of both genitalia (spectrum locations under 10 or above 90 are not considered ‘flux’ in terms of sex, so biologically speaking Xayrus is Female, not Female-flux). Or you could be like Ace, who is 100, male, and cannot form a vagina (with any form of ease; im sure he could if he really tried, by altering the way his magic forms enough).
if 1 was female and 100 was male, both Sans and Papyrus are considered a 75.
Sayrus thusly is, in body, a 3/4ths male-flux as a result that his body is a composition of his fusies.
however. his soul was strongly edited and stabilized and formed using the soul of Sarrah, "Perserverance". His soul, in physical matter, is female-dominated. on a scale of 1 being female and 100 being male, sayrus' soul rates about 30. thus the curious conflict that sayrus is both a female-flux and a male-flux, his soul being mostly female and his body being mostly male.
if he'd been left alone to come to terms with himself in terms of gender i think in the long run he'd either be genderfluid or female if asked to identify. but his encounters with chiller,,, really fucked him up. Its a certain type of damage i do not think is reversible. its hard on its own for sayrus to even stand the thought of feminine things he once enjoyed such as dresses.
the trauma is most likely as permanent as many other things chiller has left sayrus scarred with and, in dearest honesty, for all intents and purposes, it wouldnt be healthy for him to even attempt to reverse said damage. the attempts and, honestly, even the references, are too much. the damage is done and a check to the soul would show you that sayrus would never identify as anything other than male. the damage is not only psychological, but physical, and, the damage has been wrought to his code. Chiller’s hasty tearing and altering of Sayrus’ code has left some parts of him too damaged to change and, one aspect of that is Sayrus is a ‘he’ and will never seek nor desire to be a ‘she’ ever again; the same way parts of him like the missing segment of his leg cannot come back as this code damage has been made permanent. however many aspects are still left as chiller’s hasty gouging of code didn't remove everything; sayrus still finds many interests in feminine things, sayrus still favors forming female genitalia, many cases of dysphoria, and other details- these things that were left though, they are buried deep in psychological conditioning and having them pointed out can be extremely distressful to the point if you accused him of perhaps preferring having a vagina to a penis, you could set off a ptsd episode.
in terms of his sex scale after the code gouging, sayrus’ body still scales a 75 from 1 to 100, but his soul now scales between 60 or 80 with a frequently changing value do to instability in the coding of it. either way, he’s now classifiable as just male-flux.

The Wonderful World of Fantasy: Uncovering The Ancient Magus Bride and Diana Wynne Jones (Part 2)
Welcome back to the Wonderful Worlds of Fantasy! In Part One, we talked about how Diana Wynne Jones and The Ancient Magus’ Bride mangaka Kore Yamazaki are similar in the way they construct their fantasies and tie together the power of magic with themes of adolescence. Today, we’ll be discussing about how these two fantastic authors make their female protagonists work, and whether their works are low or high fantasy!
Agency, Youth, and the Female Protagonist
One of the most immediate similarities between many of Jones' works and The Ancient Magus’ Bride is how they both feature a young protagonist. For fantasy stories, this is not an uncommon element, as it’s necessary to create a stand-in character to let readers empathize with their experiences and conditions. This holds true especially in stories aimed at younger audiences. In the case of Magus’ Bride, the main protagonist is a quiet girl, Chise, introverted due to circumstances and just starting to learn more about herself and the world around her. Emotionally stunted and harassed by unnerving monsters and humans on a regular basis, she's a perfect choice for a coming of age story.
Jones' most notable work, Howl's Moving Castle, features a similar young female protagonist. Early on in the book, Sophie Hatter is cursed with appearing as an old woman after angering a witch. Lacking in self confidence and always looking down on herself, Sophie starts out as an anxious character. But as she moves on in her journey and regains confidence in herself, the magic begins to wane and Sophie appears younger and younger. By the end of the story, she's able to break the curse and regain her natural appearance. Katherine from Dogsbody is also similar, in that she has no self confidence and only gains the courage and inner strength through her journey with Sirius to overcome the bullying in her household and properly endure the grief that comes with parting with people you love. Chise falls more in line with the characters of Dogsbody – like Katherine, she too has suffered an intense dose of trauma and loneliness, to the point where she is willing to give up her own agency because she no longer has any desire to live. Her journey with Elias – of coming to terms not only with Elias' almost non-existent sense of humanity, but also her own self worth and abilities – is the underlying power behind The Ancient Magus’ Bride and its tight connection with the audience.
Why a girl like Chise though?
“When I write a book, it seems useful to extend the group to include both sexes, so that both girls and boys can enjoy it, but I do not find I can completely ignore the one-sex nature of the games in the wood. Oddly enough, this means that if I want a neutral character, not particularly girlish or boyish, I would have to use a boy. A neutral girl would strike most girl readers as a tomboy. Otherwise, it is obvious that all other characters in a fantasy ought to be very real and clear and individual, and to interact profoundly – real, colorful people, behaving as people do.” - Diana Wynne Jones, The Children in the Wood
“The Ancient Magus' Bride started out targeting the female audience more, but it has readers of all age groups and all genders.” - Kore Yamazaki, “Meet the Woman Behind Ancient Magus Bride”
Jones consistently balances the portrayal of her protagonists across her works. Some feature girls, some feature boys, but nearly all of them are young in age and at heart. Both her and Yamazaki are careful to portray characters that are a gateway into the worlds they create, but are not restrictive based on gender. Chise is a girl, but her traits and characteristics are not defined as feminine or masculine – rather, they are representative of the experiences she's faced and the result of who she is. She personally reminds me most of Polly Whittacker from Jones’ Fire and Hemlock: stubborn yet simple, and always fighting against the constant impulse to give in to self-destructive emotions as she steps closer toward acceptance and loving herself.
“I do find, myself, that the Hero, the protagonist, is the story. This is not to say that the other people in it are of no importance. Before I can write about anyone, I have to consider them as my close personal friends, even the Baddies.” - Diana Wynne Jones, Heroes
Is The Ancient Magus' Bride High Fantasy or Low Fantasy?
High fantasy is often defined as a subgenre of fantasy that contains epic elements. Some examples of this would be J.R.R Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings, George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Fire and Ice, or Beowulf. It includes high stakes, grand levels of political warfare, and voyaging through many landscapes, usually due to a prophecy or quest the main character has to complete. While Diana Wynne Jones studied high fantasy extensively, most of her works are what we consider to be low fantasy – where fantasy is a component of reality and not reality itself. Jones found that low fantasy better served the kind of themes and worlds she was trying to design: accessible landscapes that didn’t require intense exposition.
Yamazaki seems to do the same in The Ancient Magus’ Bride, in a subgenre known as urban fantasy. The series takes place in the modern world and in an international setting; Chise is originally from Japan, but her adventures with Elias take her as far as places like England and Iceland. In a low fantasy, it’s easier for Yamazaki to immerse us in recognizable settings, twisted or manipulated by wondrous elements beyond our imagination. But she also makes mundane the fabulous, and in doing so, the magic of the series becomes a background for the powerful and accessible decisions that drive many of the forces in the story.
Why is this so important, though? How does this create a different experience from that of Harry Potter facing dragons or evil wizards? The main difference is challenging fictional conventions. By playing upon our standard definitions of what we consider normal, both Yamazaki and Jones recontextualize “normalcy” itself. Take for example, the comfort of a home, or the warmth of a loved one. In a normal world, these are things we take for granted, but both creators twist our expectations of the standard and turn them into places of unfamiliarity and horror. What turns out to be a helping hand of a doctor turns out to be a horrible experiment gone wrong, manipulating kindness and love into something far more insidious. In Howl’s Moving Castle, what is originally presented as a whimsical castle turns out to be a far more complicated and powerful setting that hides dark secrets.
This ties in with the biggest element of low fantasy: metaphor. In Jones’ and Yamazaki’s works, the main characters are continuously introduced to the wonders of fantasy, only for them to contextualize it within their knowledge of mundanity. By preserving both sides, the creators open a gateway into their worlds, but also create accessible and relatable metaphors that both the main characters and audience can understand. Chise’s inherent traits of being a Slay Beggar stem from her birth and circumstances, but they also serve as a metaphor for her lack of self respect and will to survive.
And this is where the metaphor ends, and the journey of fantasy begins again, with us. It’s in the imaginative minds of Yamazaki and Jones, in the open-ended answers they bestow upon us, but lastly, in the audience, in ourselves – what we take away from the wonderful worlds these creators have given us. It’s been sometime since I’ve read a book, but recently I’ve picked up Philip Pullman’s A Book of Dust. I’ve found myself diving into its pages, absorbing every word and every detail with a renewed appreciation for the fantastical and the wild. Maybe after I’m done I’ll dive again into Jones’ stories, wander in her prose, get lost in her worlds. Who knows what magic I’ll find this time? It’ll be my own personal fantastical quest, filled with a scenery I’ve never seen before: the wondrous, and the mundane.
