ROUND 1B, MATCH 3 OUT OF 16!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Propaganda Under the Cut:
Belphegor:
Considering he's the avatar of sloth, I think that qualifies him as The Sleepy Character™
He's so cute, he has a collection of pillows including one he carries around often, he can sleep basically anywhere and he really exemplifies youngest sibling energy!
This sleepy boi is always looking for a nap, but that also may be because he is the avatar of sloth. He could sleep anywhere, and I mean ANYWHERE. Also he’s a cutie, and he loves his twin brother!! He also does NOT like his oldest brother, Lucifer. Him and one of his other brothers both. He likes to plan on ways to prank Lucifer, and even gets MC in on it. But overall, vote Belphie the demon who could sleep anywhere!
Nanaki Kazuaki:
he is a school teacher who falls asleep in his classes quite often (usually in the middle of talking) and his students have to wake him up.
i feel like this misses the most important part of hatoful boyfriend which is: that nanaki is a quail the bird there. is actually him. hato moa was kind enough to give us cute anime boy representations, but the characters in hatoful boyfriend are all birds (except the MC, who is a human girl). he's also a brilliant mathematical genius, but his narcolepsy makes him fall asleep mid-lecture... please vote for the sleepy birb! (and play/read Hatoful Boyfriend, it rules!) [Click link to see image]

🥰💘💌 I am requesting Hatoful S/I lore 🥺
I HAVEN'T POSTED ABOUT MY HATOFUL S/I IN YEARS BUT I SWEAR!!!! I WILL REDESIGN HIM EVENTUALLY!!! HE WILL LIVE!!!!
Thankyou so much for asking I am think thonkin
🥰: How would someone who loved you portray you?
The Hatoful fandom is very good at staying in character (at least the parts that I'm in), so if they liked me they'd portray me well. Though they'd probably play up the scatterbrained part of my character a bit much, but that's more fun anyway.
💘: Why would people love your ship? Why would people dislike your ship?
It definitely depends on the Universe. Mainline the ship is more of just a crush and background set piece to the main story anyway, probably only really seen in the manga and mostly just as a gag piece. More of a silly "What if Kazuaki/Hitroi forgave himself and dated the librarian instead?" kind of ship, wholesome, cute, what-if crack ship. Hitori fans claim it undermines his character, and they'd be right.
In the Shrine AU/Mirror AU (please mirror 2024) it'd get a LOT of the same flack as Quail Boyfriends alone would get. They're toxic, Kazuaki's manipulative, Hitori's an abuser, Emile's an enabler, etc etc. And like, yeah kiiiind of but that's mashing the main story and AU together. I think shippers of Polyquails would focus more on the AU version where we're like, at most, a dysfunctional polycule with a communication problem. Like yeah Kazuaki is still a depressed emotionally manipulative mess but he IS working on it, and Hitori still is rather detached and closed off but he has Nageki to remind him to open up, and I still kinda infantalize Kazuaki and give into him way too quickly but liiiike... We're working on it.
We're three young adults doing our best, hurting eachother along the way but in the end, pretty happy. I think some people would like the realness of it, and some people can't handle the toxic yoai. It is what it is.
💌: How would your dynamic be portrayed? What might people focus on most? Any misconceptions?
Most people might notice I tend to favor Kazuaki and Kazuaki favors Hitori and play into that to make a sort of... Jealousy plotline? Or worse make it a love triangle instead a Polycule! Aaah yeah that'd be the worst interpretation...
People might assume my character dislikes Hitori because he does tend to be a little agro at him, but that's mostly again because he babies Kazuaki and is constantly ready to throw hands for him at the slightest inconvenience, and yes that includes at Hitori who is demanding he eats the vegetables on his plate. He does still have his moments with Hitori but they do bicker more than the average couple...
Oooooh my god could you imagine the fandom deeming Hitori and I Kazuaki's "Parents" instead of his boyfriends??? Augh! Incorrect!!! But SOMEONE would say it for sure...
I think it's kind of a complex dynamic over all and would have a few interpretations, especially sense it's mostly hinted at and not canon, and Hatoful media outside of the game is mostly Goofy Silly times.

Tell us everything
Welcome to the Hitori fucking Dies AU
Okay so I don't have pretty much anything plotted out yet but the concept is "hatoful boyfriend except hitori managed to save nageki in the fire and died in the process"
Tw for all the usual hatoful boyfriend topics (suicide, familial death and grief, medical malpractice, likeable characters making pretty awful choices)
Also spoilers for if I ever make this for real. I'd want it to be structured similarly to hatoful boyfriend where most major plot reveals happen late, so by explaining the ideas from the start of this AU I'd also kind of be spoiling every major plot twist. But I don't know how far I'll get into the project (I have had a REAL hard time focussing on writing recently) and I want to share all my ideas immediately lol
Obviously there are many logistical issues in this au that would need to be worked out- why bbl wouldn't just happen immediately if Nageki was alive, for instance. Bear with me pls
Also please note that I haven't consumed every single piece of hatoful media, mostly just the two games and sections of one of the manga. There may be some things I missed out on that.
But here are the ideas I have thus far
The first sticking point is that I think there's a high probability that if Hitori died in the fire Nageki would just attempt again because he still believes he needs to sacrifice himself and would just feel even guiltier. BUT I also think it could be equally in character for Nageki to refuse to let Hitori's sacrifice be in vain and find enough resolve to escape and keep living and find a better solution
But of course, Nageki could never have a normal life while infected with the charon virus, nor would he be content with one while he's aware of the Hawk party's plans
He'd have to go on the run, obviously. Here's where you get another interesting possible choice of Nageki somehow managing to join the Doves. But frankly I don't think an incredibly sick 15 year old with extremely limited life experience is going to be good at going on the run. I think he'd manage to stay hidden for long enough. For the purposes of this au he doesn't die from his sickness immediately but it was definitely a risk. (Let's assume that Shuu originally planned for Nageki to live much longer than he did in canon so he received some genuine medical care in between the experiments)
However. Nageki is homeless and unable to tell anyone about what was done to him or get help. He can't go to any birds because the Hawks are searching for him, and he can't warn any humans because they'd just die if he spoke to them
Surprise! This is where this also becomes a Kazuaki lives AU!
I think Nageki meets Kazuaki mostly by random chance in the street. Now, in canon I'm not sure if Kazuaki was kicked out of college at this point and that's why he was out there in the rain or if he was out there for some other reason (edit: been informed that he IS still in college when he meets Hitori in canon, which works great for me). I'm choosing to believe it's the latter for the purposes of making this au work- Kazuaki is living in a dorm at this point but is close to failing his classes and is out in the rain for some reason. Roll with me here.
Nageki stumbles across Kazuaki. He'd probably be hesitant to approach due to the aforementioned danger
But Kazuaki is obviously not in a good state, and if there's one thing Nageki hates its feeling like he can't do anything when people are struggling. And part of Nageki is purely running on What Would Hitori Do mode right now. So obviously Nageki tries to figure out what he can do to help
I think suddenly being shown kindness by some random kid who is clearly in a similarly awful state might draw Kazuaki out of his head enough that he could end up trying to help Nageki instead, out of genuine concern, a sense of understanding, and a desperate need to be important to literally anybirdie on earth
This is the first time Nageki has talked to anybirdie since Hitori's death, as well as the longest Kazuaki has talked to someone in weeks
Nageki needs a place to stay that no one would think to look for him and where he's slightly less likely to immediately die. Kazuaki needs to interact with another living being regularly, and has an empty dorm room and a meal plan he's barely been using
cue incredibly dysfunctional found family slowburn- They feel obligated to each other (which eventually becomes genuine care and protectiveness) and end up functioning better as a result
(This could possibly end up being very codependent, because what relationship in hatoful doesn't have a LITTLE unhealthy codependency. Staking the whole of your recovery on another person's wellbeing is NOT sustainable. But overall WAY healthier for both of them than Hitori and Kazuakis canon dynamic in that they both make it out alive with no deception necessary.)
Kazuaki starts attending classes again so that they can stay housed. He struggles and still can't thrive, but he just barely stays afloat with Nageki's support and renewed motivation. Nageki does what he can to make the dorm more habitable without leaving. Nageki's presence is a secret for obvious reasons, but it's a pretty easy one to keep since Kazuaki is so isolated to begin with. Nageki's trapped again in a different way, but Kazuaki's awful living space may honestly feel like a relief after the sterile lab. Months, maybe even a full year, pass
Eventually, Nageki trusts Kazuaki enough to tell him about everything- the charon virus, St. Pigeonations, Hitori's death, all of it. He tells him that one day, if he can live long enough, Nageki will find a way to expose what's going on at St. Pigeonations to the world and bring an end to it
Nageki likely tells him out of a sense of guilt- this is what he's gotten Kazuaki into, and he deserves better than all the extra trouble Nageki comes with.
But Nageki also won't be talked out of his plan, and when Kazuaki realizes this, he's not going to let Nageki be in danger by himself, not when it means Kazuaki would be left completely alone again
Kazuaki hasn't dreamed about his future in years, had no plans past college for how his life could go. What difference would it make if he started working towards becoming a teacher?
Kazuaki had no significance to the Hawks whatsoever. And teaching is completely in character for Kazuaki when he's in a slightly better mental state (see: shrine au) so no one would likely question it. No one EVER pays attention to Kazuaki or takes him seriously- which could make him a very, very good information gatherer
(And Nageki IS still sick, and maybe, just maybe Kazuaki can find out if the doctor wasn't COMPLETELY lying about doing research into curing it– if only as a contingency plan to keep his bioweapon from getting out of his control. Maybe if Kazuaki poked around enough, he could find it and hand it over to a non-evil doctor. He doesnt tell Nageki about this idea though- Nageki would refuse it outright, and Kazuaki couldnt bear the dissappintment if he told him and then failed)
Nageki... is apprehensive about this plan. But it's the only one they have, the only influence he can possibly exert to try to stop the Hawks without walking immediately into their clutches. His need to do what's right overrules his need to do what's smart.
But he begs- Kazuaki can't do too much for him, can't sacrifice his own wellbeing to keep Nageki hidden, and he can't do ANYTHING that might get him caught. If Kazuaki ever doesn't come home, Nageki is flying in right after him. Nageki has lost three families now- he WON'T lose a fourth, no matter what.
Kazuaki promises. We'll see if he's able to keep it.
WOO okay that's the main part I had planned out. But here's a little more.
I haven't thought as much about ghost!Hitori yet but. Oh man. Ghost Hitori
I think he'd be a lot less bitter than canon Hitori since he achieved what he set out to do (save nageki) but I do think he'd still have regrets enough to not be able to move on (leaving Nageki completely alone, not rescuing him earlier, knowing that there's still danger and being able to do nothing to help it)
I think he'd be less detached from the world and more driven to help others- especially the students, the kids, who were being used unawares of the horrors of the school. If only, if ONLY one of them could hear his warnings
(eventually, years later, Hiyoko can hear his warnings)
I'm also curious about how Shuu's plans would change with Nageki alive- with a burnt medical center and no liver cells to work with, he doesn't have samples of the charon virus. Would he still plan on turning Ryouta into the new carrier when the original carrier was still out there and needed to be recaptured? Lots to think about.
How I'd want to present this, ideally is as a fan game of alternate routes based on these changes
In true hatoful boyfriend fashion all of this is just the backstory to get to where all the characters are at the start of the game. The main plot is about all of the butterfly effects that occur in Hiyoko's experience due to entirely new plot threads occurring

shuu has generally been making less and less scary comments in the recent months...but if he’s in a bad mood, kazuaki’s little angelic voice softens him immediately.

doppelganger playlist + reasons for adding the songs!
trying to get used to playlist posts even though i haven't gotten any reqs for them yet [/lh] sooo here! everything's under the cut except for the playlist, which is linked here!
very quick color guide:
doppel - arle - some asshole who i won't directly name
Star of the Show - GHOST:
clowns? check. gay ass? check. feelings of being below someone who sees themself so highly when in reality they're a total bitch? check.
i think if doppel knew what kinning was she'd kin the funny clown laindividual
Pokemon glitch songs - Various:
once i listened to one of these and thought 'oh hey if i remixed this a bit it'd totally be a doppel boss battle theme lol' which actually led me to making the playlist more or less
L.A. - Crumb the Band:
"Where have I gone? I've been gone so long Where have I gone? I've been gone so long"
Theo - Omoi:
we needed a hopeful song on this playlist okay
From the Gallows - IDKHOW:
based off of a roleplay that completely shaped my opinion of her. she's in/she was in a horribly unhealthy relationship with a guy who had hurt both her and blue arle (kare) a lot but he is/was the only person who ever showed her actual love and affection at all so she felt she had to stay with him and do whatever made him happy because otherwise she'd be all alone again
Last Dance - Ev e:
healing song! 'that relationship was shitty' she said to her grandkids 'don't get in shitty relationships if you can avoud them'
Waltz No. 2 - Dmitri Shostakovich:
i just think she'd like this song a lot
Icicles - The Scary Jokes:
"You've become art, How could they even start to see? Beyond your presentation 'Cause they've got no imagination"
"And I admit it would be easier To be relieved of all this shame and not have to Wear it on my sleeve But I imagine it's quite nice for you To have so many chances Have so many ways to be redeemed"
she feels like the only way she can be 'redeemed' after trying to replace arle is just to let herself be entertainment for her [ex-]boyfriend.
she ends up feeling even worse after finding out he got away from both responsibility and guilt after assaulting both arle and his brother while she will never be 'free' from her own feelings of guilt for even trying to replace/fuse with arle
Tained Love - Gloria Jones:
"Sometimes I feel I've got to Run away, I've got to Get away from the pain you drive into the heart of me The love we share Seems to go nowhere And I've lost my right For I toss and turn, I can't sleep at night" "Once I ran to you (I ran) Now I run from you (Now I run) The tainted love you're giving I gave you all a girl can give you Take not give and that's not nearly all Tainted love"
she has. unhealthy relationship
Vault Sideways Piano & Vault Battle - Mike Morasky:
the latter sounds very vaguely like her theme/something that would be her theme and both fit her well imo
Boss Battle - Einosuke Nagao/Tsuyoshi Matsushima [Madou Monogatari: Hanamaru Dai Youchienji OST]:
she's boss
Battle theme - Toshiaki Sakoda and/or Masanobu Tsukamoto [Madou Monogatari 1 PC-98]:
she's also battle
Clown - Junichi Yoshida, Koji Onari, Kazuaki Nagai [Puyo Puyo~n]:
it's literally her theme /lh
Blood from the Concrete - The Scary Jokes:
.she's constantly putting herself (and sometimes even kare) down to please her [ex-]boyfriend, feeling like if she doesn't basically become the perfect in entertainment and care and love then she'll never be anywhere close to 'redeemed' in anyone's eyes
something sort of heartbreaking, too, is singing this song from her POV would show how much she believes her boyfriend's lies - "he's always been so supportive to me, and nothing but! he's always been kind to me! he really thought i was the real arle!" [all things he actually said in the rp to try to manipulate her into staying with him]
another thing is she's been trapped for so long she hardly remembers how to give affection or treat anyone right, leading her to try way too hard to please this guy to make up for it.
A Mannequin Adrift - The Scary Jokes:
"Come on, let us see you smile Stop crying and let's see you smile There You're much prettier that way"
"It's so hard to function I feel like my body has died with my soul trapped inside This cold death rattle in my chest feels just like pennies in a tin can"
Last Decisive Battle - Unknown [Puyo Puyo~n]:
another one of her actual themes
Honey I'm Home [8-Bit] - Youtube user Saidan No Hitsugi (original by GHOST):
i just think it'd be something she'd listen to
BROADCAST ILLUSION [Music Box] - Youtube user Avenir / lysterhein (original by GHOST):
another thing where the original doesn't really fit her (disregarding the manipulation stuff) but i still think that she'd listen to it
The Moon Will Sing - The Crane Wives:
"Tell me once again I could have been anyone, anyone else Before you made the choice for me"
"All those empty rooms We could have been anywhere, anywhere else Instead I made a bed with apathy My heart knew the weight Ten years worth of dust and neglect"
starting off, listening to this song actually made me cry, both because of remembering bad stuff and because it fits her so terribly.
one of the biggest and worst tiny moments in this awful rp she was in was one where she doubted her boyfriend's love for her.
this wasn't her plan, it just wasn't. she wanted to regain what she lost, catch up with what she missed. she wanted her friends, she wanted "her" friends. was this really what she wanted?
she lied to herself and said yes, this is what i wanted, but she knew it really wasn't; it felt so forced to her, to want it.
another thing is the last line - ten years worth of dust and neglect - fits in so terribly well with a song i made for kare about her experience with doppel's boyfriend
"No but seriously, I’m too scared to face you but believe me I had to go to therapy for ten years ‘cause of this shit"
(i know the lyrics are bad i made it in one go-)
Truck Stop Tiger - Roar:
"You stayed with me like glass between my teeth We'll burn the house before anyone gets out When life loses meaning, there doesn't need to be a reason"
"When you're stuck in this position It's like training for the wrong conditions" "You've been training for the wrong conditions"
.doppel being with her boyfriend hurts her so much. she can hardly handle staying with him, she just wants to leave but he won't let her and he just won't go away!
training for his favorite sport, boxing, isn't something she wants. she doesn't like boxing, she doesn't have fun, but she can't do what she wants without disappointing him. she tried telling him it was too much several times, but he just didn't listen!
{shout-out to my awesome friend tsu for giving me this song to add to the playlist}
Safe Ship Harbored - The Crane Wives:
"Watch me give up, honey, watch me give up I swore I never would What we've been wishing upon ourselves Things that I forgot I cannot do"
"Where does your faith fall? Where does your faith fall in me? Don't break the bottle Don't waste your blessings on me"
"I ain't proud I wasn't born a safe ship Something wore me down"
honestly i could put the entire song here but i'm keeping it to just those lines
she wasn't made to box, she wasn't made to bend over backwards for a guy who only kisses her when she wins a match, she wasn't made to only be with one guy who's only with her because kare refused to even look at him after he assaulted her
she constantly tries to give every part of herself to him while receiving quite literally nothing in return, and it's not working out
Hope - Roar:
"Do I need a reason to wake up lonely all the time? I don't want to see you, but I don't know where to hide"
"Swim in circles, water fills your lungs And why should anyone else offer their help? I mean, just look at the way I never took care of myself"
"I'll be numb, but I'll be free My friends will keep me honest"
"You won't mean a thing to me Now, that's what I call, "progress""
mental illness monday starring both arles

NEVER MIND I LIED I NEED TO TALK ABOUT THIS BECAUSE THE SUBVERSION OF THE OTOME GENRE THAT IS HATOFUL BOYFRIEND IS JUST SO FUCKING INTERESTING AND EVEN THOUGH I’VE PLAYED IT BEFORE I AM HAVING THOUGHTS IN THIS APARTMENT TONIGHT yes there are spoilers annie if u read this i will be Sad don’t ruin it for urself let the bird nonsense LIVE anyway:
so the thing is, you go into hatoful boyfriend expecting an otome. shit, sure, a weird otome, but there’re weird otome’s out there--- this wasn’t the first weird otome, and it definitely wasn’t the last i am looking at YOU, colonel sanders dating sim, do not think i have forgotten you, i will NEVER forget you, you haunt my waking nightmares and like, it is! it’s an otome! you date birds, but it’s still an otome!
so you play through the routes, and you laugh kind of high-pitched and manic because. yeah, it’s fucken weird. but it’s kind of fun! bright and colourful and also ridiculous, and the ridiculousness is actually kind of a draw. listen to me. the creepy doctor’s theme music is the dance of the sugarplum fairies, i could not make this shit up if i tried. and so you get to know the characters, and you’re having a great time! but then... suddenly... it’s not. suddenly it’s not an otome anymore.
suddenly it’s a horror story.
suddenly it’s a horror story about a pandemic. about, specifically, the aftermath of a pandemic.
and sure, the premise of H1N1 making birds grow giant brains is implausible on a lot of levels, but at least it’s original. i’ll give it points for panache and for balls, because an AAA studio could never, no i am not taking criticism at this time
and the thing is, if you’ve played all the routes--- this last one is a sudden, horrific bucket of cold water poured all over your head. because you know that something happened, to get the world where it is, but you don’t really know what. the MC is a bombastic, overly-friendly girl called hiyoko, and you get really, really fond of her! she’s straight-forward and loud and lives in a cave! what kind of nonsense, honestly! i love her! it’s made pretty clear that hiyoko is the only human at this school. the bird school. which is for birds.
and you go: you know what, whatever. i’m gonna roll with it.
but she dies violently, and then you get to be her best friend and company (a rock dove called ryouta; his boyfriend the haughty fantail dove sakuya; the boyfriend’s older brother yuuya who, for some inexplicable reason, constantly peppers his speech with bad french and who’s life goal is to fight evil whilst being sexy and suave, and that is a direct quote; and their teacher kazuaki, a deeply traumatized quail, among others. again. i COULD NOT MAKE THIS SHIT UP), and it is definitely not an otome, anymore. you are hiyoko’s best friend and you are going to solve her murder, so help you god!
so there’s this really neat flipside to the game as a whole, because now you’ve got a mystery on your hands, and a murder, and then the bodies start piling up. and you’re fucking INVESTED because you’ve played through all these routes and you NEED to know what happened because SO MUCH OF IT doesn’t make sense! there’s no reason behind it! you will cry about hiyoko! why the fuck are you crying about hiyoko, sara, oh my god!
but it does what mysteries so often struggle to do well: it keeps your attention.
and this doesn’t even cover it! i haven’t gone into two very separate political factions that are pulling the game back and forth over the fate of humanity. i haven’t gone into the reality-bending weirdness that is anghel. i haven’t gone into the ghost-bird. i haven’t gone into the fact that the sequel has a whole montage for magical girl pigeons and two abominations of nature who really like christmas. i haven’t even got into the fact that ryouta sometimes crossdresses! there’s just so much, okay! there is so so so much!
it’s not just an otome. it’s an experience. anyway, am i recommending bird school?
you’re absolutely fucking right i am, go play it
just so y’all know the last storyline is called Bad Boys Love like it’s a lot please

I would die for Hitori Uzune. RIP to Kazuaki, but I’m different.
The Hatoful fandom consists of 13 people and a paperclip. It always has. Unfortunately, it probably always will. Where this is cause for some perks, it’s also some of its faults. In example, it’s still an anime game, made by a Japanese woman, and attracts weebs. Weebs tend to like to think of characters 2-Dimensionally, breaking the character down to what they think is their core personality traits. Hitori is no stranger to this, and is beaten down into this heartless, manipulative, selfish bastard. But I believe Moa is saying “anyone, even the best of us, is capable of becoming a monster if driven to it.” Let’s roll.
2162. Hitori was born into a world of war and hate, plopped into an orphanage at just 2 years old. This can be found in Moa’s canon spin-off manga, where Hitori at about ten years old is caring for the other war orphans along with the other older birds. Luckily for him, he was a genius. He was able to go out and get jobs tutoring birds and support his rag-tag family at his young age.
With that, we know Hitori was not originally cold and heartless, despite how the world may have birthed him. Especially when Nageki arrived frail and sickly. Hitori and the other birds were happy to put in overtime in an attempt to pay for the poor dove’s medications, even in his protest.
Then, 2180 happened. Imagine what sort of toll that would take on Hitori. he was absent. He was at work, unaware of the jeopardy that befell his family. What kind of horrible, mind-rattling survivors guilt must rack this bird’s brain, knowing he wasn’t there as his family was massacred one by one?
“What did we do? We had nothing. Our parents and homes had already been stolen by the humans. All we had left were each other.”
We can gather from this same scene Hitori blames himself for not being there. For not being able to protect his family, or even Nageki. Even though had he been there, he would have died alongside everybirdie else, and left Nageki to succumb to his illness alone. Something of this magnitude would create anxieties and trauma unfathomable to those who did not deal with it.
In Hitori, this manifested as full-blown helicopter mom. He can’t help but think of every little nit-pick detail over Nageki, terrified one feather out of place will kill him. The fandom is good about this side of his character! And of course, so is Moa. This may be the Summer Vacation Drama CD: Hitori The Worrywart (which takes place in MIRROR AU), but I love it’s portrayal of the anxious quail.
Hitori continued to care and ache over Nageki’s declining health. He was desperate. Begging doctors, even though deep in his little quail brain he knew Nageki was a lost cause, and that he was dying. But he couldn’t think of a life without Nageki, and did all in his power to try and keep the bird as well as he could. We can see a great example of this love in words you might not think of.
“How about this? From now on, ‘I’m fine’ is not allowed.”
I’ve always imagined Hitori getting mildly heated at Nageki in this conversation. The quail is on his last strands of stability, and the dove he cares endlessly for is trying to hide the very thing he ails himself over. The genuinity in his words shines through- telling Nageki he’d rather hear he’s bad and hurting.
So, in this desperation, Hitori carted Nageki off to some strange doctor in some strange prestigious school. And how couldn’t he? A doctor who claimed to know of the virus eating away at Nageki’s life, and how to cure it. Hitori’s beacon of hope in a sea of darkness. The only bird in the entire universe he had left to love, the one he had arguably always favored and adored, was dying. He would do anything in his power to keep the one thing he loved alive, no matter the irrationality or cost. No matter the very dying bird’s own lips saying “I… don’t want to go.”
Whether or not you ship these birds, I firmly believe Hitori is in love with Nageki in a romantic sense.
“I can no longer love another creature // I think we meant more to each other than anybirdie else in the world... // The love I felt soured into resentment // I should remember the beautiful face I knew, not… a photo covered in scribbles”
Not to mention admitting he can’t bear to live without the dove in BBL. And, in his route, Hiyoko goes as far as to refer to this bird as a female, which means he’s speaking so fondly she’s assuming it was a lover, and therefore a woman. Hitori’s stopped any sort of love at the idea he can only love Nageki post-mortem. That is canon. And well… that’s not very brotherly, no matter how good of a relationship you may have with your sibling (I speak from experience).
Okay, okay, this persuasive essay is NOT for convincing you of this ship, that is another essay for another time. I’ve only mentioned this opinion because I need you to understand his irrationality for the one thing he has left, and the fragility of it. And why it might drive anybirdie to… Hitori-level madness. Moving on.
2183. A mere 3 years after Hitori had lost the majority of his family to human terrorists. Nageki sends a coded letter, and… we can see Hitori’s anxieties outright.
“It’s happening again. Nageki needs me, and I’m not there.”
This is… a very powerful line in the game. We’re seeing just how vulnerable Hitori truly is. This is a traumatized individual in a panic attack- realizing the love of his goddamn life is once again faced with something horrible, and Hitori is once again absent from the scene.
And just like that, he’s gone.
The only thing. The only one Hitori had left in life to love. To live for. Taken from him without so much as a second chance. This is painful to write. This part of Hatoful is, without a doubt, the most agonizing. I know how it is to lose something so dear and feel as though maybe it’s not worth going on without them.
This is the peak of Moa’s tragedy writing ability (and yes, I’m including Holiday Star). But this is my point, is it not? Though his kanji may be “sun bird”, the actual word for his name “Hitori” quite literally means one, alone, solitary. He is now all alone in the universe, no family left. How can anybirdie even remotely remain in charge of their faculties (as Sakuya would put it) by now? You wouldn’t.
Hitori is now a husk of his former self. Anything he’s ever cared for is gone, he has nothing left to live for. He goes- my favorite coined term for him- absolutely batshit. He gets what we call “trauma-induced psychosis”, and begins to hallucinate very vividly, a form that he refers to as “Nageki”. We all know him of course, as Shadow. Shadow, from the little information we’re able to gather from BBL, is tormenting Hitori ruthlessly.
Shadow is easily misunderstood, because Moa made him fathomable, so the reader was able to understand exactly what was happening. What had become of Hitori Uzune. Shadow in all his simplicity- is Hitori. It is an introjection of Nageki, manifested to validate Hitori in his self-hatred. Don’t you get it? He hates himself just as much as you hate him!
Anything Hitori thinks of himself, Shadow is there to back up. He’s taunting him day in and day out, reminding him that he killed Nageki, and every ounce of Nageki’s suffering life was the fruit of Hitori’s inability to protect him. But again, it’s his own brain, telling him exactly what he wants to hear. What he truly believes. Telling himself what he’s done, and how he deserves this. ...And to seek revenge.
Hitori lost his mind. He had nothing else to lose, after all. He became obsessed with Nageki even moreso than he was in life, because there was no level-headed dove to calm him and tell him to stop worrying so much, or keep him at least reasonably held together by simply being there.
He listened to his psychosis, and when he made a friend (Moa gives evidence Hitori and Kazuaki were friends prior to Hitori’s ill-intentions), his psychosis got in the way of that, too. As he travelled down this relationship (which Moa herself says is pretty much romantic), we can assume he realized just how unable to love he was. He had Kazuaki around because, let’s face it. He wanted someone like Nageki who was incompetent so he could nurture and care for them. And for a while, it worked. But it didn’t. Hitori didn’t love Kazuaki. He couldn’t. He was too busy looking for Nageki.
So, you’re reading this in english. You speak english. At least a little, right? So maybe you played the english (and localized) version of the game. Well then you may not know the following. Please pay attention! This gets a bit rocky, and a bit more “Hitori...!”.
In the English version, Hitori disguised as Kazuaki is “tired”. In the Japanese version, he’s “sleepy” or “dreamy”. I’d describe him as ditsy, for sure. He kind of acts like an airhead who knows absolutely nothing, and his students don’t take him seriously. In the Hatomame Sweet Blend Drama CD, there is a track that follows Kazuaki on a little adventure of his narcolepsy, and going to Shuu for help.
In and out of comatose, Hitori, as himself, is there in his dreams as a separate bird.
“This bird with a face I had never seen spoke to me in a voice I had never heard, and this is what he said.”
“Nanaki-sensei” is clearly denying his own identity.
“I’ll sleep, just a little, and then leave… good… night…”
“But sleeping is my job… You still have a little longer. Tomorrow, and the day after that, and the day after that…”
This is dream Hitori telling himself that he has to continue his alias until his revenge is fulfilled. The quail that was once Hitori must remain dormant until he is reunited with Nageki again, and can be happy again. As a metaphor for depression… don’t you feel like you’re a shell of your former self?
So, going off this information… I believe Hitori has repressed himself. This is due to my own knowledge on psychology but-- Hitori doesn’t want to be Hitori anymore. It’s too hard. Hitori the war orphan. Hitori the lone survivor. Hitori the murderer and identity thief. It’s him not wanting to deal with his trauma in a healthy way, and instead locking it up and becoming somebirdie new and undamaged.
He killed Hitori.
This falls into the other delusion- that Nageki is somehow not completely dead and gone and ash- but still trapped, somehow, somewhere, and Hitori needs to find and get him. To kill Isa and the researchers who “killed” Nageki, and bring “Nageki” home. Whatever he believes Nageki is. In BBL, we see this quite literally varies! He tried to cut Ryouta open and steal his liver!
“Sir, Nageki would have never wanted this…!”
There is no difference between a serial killer and someone in a court room screaming for the serial killer to be murdered in turn. That mourning mother is then one in the same with that killer, is she not? She sees him, and wants him to die. She wants him to die and suffer. She believes that will bring her a sense of justice. Even though she knows it will not return her son to her. Hitori, is that mourning mother. He sees Isa, and all he can see is the man who murdered his dove.
I know the biggest aspect as to why the fandom hates Hitori is the sole factor that Kazuaki is #relatable. He’s a depressed college student who thinks he’s better off dead. Then, Hitori tricks him. But you’re not reading Kazuaki right. It’s okay, he’s easy to misread from Holiday Star’s plotline.
Holiday Star was written with Kazuaki as the villain, do you forget? A grey villain as well, but a villain nonetheless. He told his tragic sob story death in such a way, you can’t help but to cry. He’s the victim! I’m not saying he’s not. But he was written specifically to be pitied in Holiday Star, and as you continue on, you begin to see he’s actually just anti-self help. He doesn’t want to face his fears. He doesn’t want to leave his safe egg and take the risk he should have.
Kazuaki is meant to be pitied, yes,  but just on the brink of annoying with his helplessness and self-deprecation. He’s, forgive me, a “sad sack of shit” who does nothing to help himself. Don’t come after me for being “ableist” or whatever- Moa literally wrote him this way.
This is also depicted in “Kazuaki-kun’s Book”. Now, this book takes place in the MIRROR AU, but it tells of how Kazuaki met Hitori. Moa starts the manga off by explaining Kazuaki had a great chickhood, a healthy life, and an easy, happy time. But then, he flunked his college exams and didn’t even get into his safety school. He lazed around, grew depressed, and let his apartment rot. He played video games until his online friends got jobs, and wasted any money he had on them as well. The only thing that scared him out of it is when his next door neighbor was found dead, having rotted into his own futon.
So imagine Hitori, who has worked so hard and lost everything he had done so for. Tirelessly, through his horrible, fucked up existence. Nageki, who had his short and miserable life robbed from him, had to die. Had to kill himself. And this random quail has the audacity to bitch and moan, thinking he’s got it bad? He’s a waste of space that could have been filled with Nageki. This is what Hitori’s brain is thinking. Hitori’s only ~20 years old when Nageki dies, after all.
I’m not saying this is cause for murder and identity theft. Don’t you dare misread me on this. But as I’ve stated prior- Hitori’s completely lost it.  But you ship him with the chukar that literally ruined his life. Hitori’s a grey villain but holy fuck why would you want him to fuck the partridge that tortured and drove his only loved one to suicide?
It was wrong to trick Kazuaki. It was wrong to insult him as he died. It was wrong to steal his identity. That’s obvious and a given. But you all seem to look at that factoid alone, chalking it up to ‘preying on a poor mentally ill man” but not taking into consideration Hitori is mentally ill himself. ...Just not #relatable enough for you.
Hitori is suicidal as well. He’s been suicidal presumably since Nageki died. Don’t you dare say Hitori isn’t at least a little in the same boat. I don’t care if he’s not as soft and uwu and cuddly as Kazuaki. Mental illness is not rainbows and butterflies and emo hair (though Kazuaki is not portrayed this way).
Holiday star bears all the answers. I raise you important points, so pay close attention. The first key component is Hitori, found upside down in the pudding. He’s crying. Why is he crying? Because he’s lost his name? Oh, but think deeper.
“I’m Nemo”.
“Nemo” is latin for nothing, and his name translates to “nothing” in every language of HoliStar. The King has vomited him up in his kingdom, and robbed him back of what he stole from him. His identity.
But it goes even deeper than that.
“I’ve lost something, and so, I think I might cry.”
From this phrase alone, it’s painful to play this game. Nageki is right in front of his beak. But what did he do? He ate his own eyes. Hitori, in his refusal to identify with himself, has robbed himself of quite literally seeing the very bird he adores and sought after. Then, he is renamed his own identity by that bird (the only identity he accepts). How surreally real.
The second key component is when everybirdie is being rescued, but Leone warns Yuuya the quail is clearly falling more rapidly into a coma, and may not be able to awake. Why is this? Because Hitori wants to die. He’s fine with it, and Kazuaki is more than happy to keep him. When Yuuya finds him, Hitori is not at all alarmed as he should be. He seems passive, and simply wants to fall back to sleep. He’s to the point of trying to strangle Yuuya in attempt to let himself fall into eternal slumber (even if he thinks Yuuya is… Kazuaki..?).
Heed these next words carefully. When Yuuya asks if The King did something to him, Hitori replies-
“...No, all The King did was close the door.”
I am a firm believer this is Hitori indirectly saying “Kazuaki did nothing wrong, and I do not resent him for hating me.” Especially since Hitori shows signs of knowing it’s Kazuaki, and repenting.
“He said I need to be punished. Apparently I did something bad… and I think I know what it was.”
This is confirmed in my next point, so bear with me.
Hitori, in this same conversation, is admitting he wants to die. The only thing that stops him- as morbid as it may be, is remembering this takes place before the events of BBL. He hasn’t fulfilled what he believes is his “something I need to do”. Which is seek revenge, and bring Nageki home, as per Shadow’s orders.
Lastly, at the bitter end of Holiday Star when everybirdie is plummeting through the air from the false star, Hitori is still blind and confused. Suddenly, The King erupts from behind Hitori, and appears to be talking to him.
--
“Oh, is that right?”
--
“...I know, I know. ...but it’s still too soon. That’s right, I’ll be along soon. I’ll catch up with you. Someday…”
This is arguably my most prominent point in the entire essay. This is Hitori, admitting not only does he still plan to kill himself, but that he intends to keep his promise and reunite with Kazuaki in the afterlife. These are not the words of a heartless quail. These are the words of somebirdie who knows they’ve taken advantage of a friend, but is continuing to do their best to keep their promises and make amends. This is Hitori telling Kazuaki he still cares for him.
Hitori is the result of trauma and hardship beyond compare, and his inability to cope. He is not meant to be hated. He is meant to have shock value, yes. What he has done his disgusting, but you want to love him. Because he raised the sweetest bird in the entire game who would rather kill himself than hurt others.
Grey-villains are difficult, and because you can’t love them for being purely evil, you end up hating them for being a good person who’s done bad things. Hitori is a cracked window. Not quite shattered, but no longer whole, with a faulty image. Hitori is not just some heartless, manipulative, selfish bastard. He’s quite literally a bird with a broken wing (or entire ribcage more like), trying to… well, Live, and be happy.

Behold, something (kind of) new is coming...
Hello Hatoful Boyfriend community. I am Kiro. Again!
Last year I made the blog @kazushuu (It’s really crazy that an entire year has passed since then) and initially I didn’t have much thought put into it, and was making stuff up along with the asks... Then my hyperfixation on Hatoful went from 70% to 170% and I developed an entire AU dedicated to rewriting Hatoful Boyfriend. Not in a “I’m gonna fix Hatoful’s plot holes” way but mostly in a “I am lonely and crave self indulgent headcanons” way. But fixing plot holes also.
Thus came the Shrine AU. A timeline whose basis is “Shuu ended up seeing Ryouta and Hiyoko on the street on the day of that terrorist attack, but turned away, and never asked Ryouta for his wish... prompting him to lead a more depressing and remorseful life.” And thus a butterfly effect is caused, and Nageki didn’t die, Kazuaki never died, but! Hitori still developed narcolepsy, and there is a strange inverted mirror-reflection happening between Kazuaki and Hitori. A perfect neutral between the happenings of Holiday Star and MIRROR’s storylines.
--And on April Fools this year I made the blog @hitotohri which has been a shitty little ask blog for Hitori and Tohri as “no homo boyfriends” meanwhile kazushuu was about Shuu and Kazuaki as “yes homo boyfriends”.
And then I decided to start writing... stories that take the story back to the very beginning of the year, before Shuu and Kazuaki become boyfriends. I’ve been uploading chapters here and there, showing the point of views of Shuu, Kazuaki, the students, and some other stuff... Basically I decided to take my shipping game a step higher and write an entire novel dedicated to the partridge and the quail’s love story. There are also some fix-it elements to Anghel’s character and somewhat to Nageki, Kazuaki, and his childhood, even the Ichijou situation. So I hope that even if you’re not a full-on ShuuKazu shipper, you can still enjoy it to some extent. The most niche pairing in Hatoful receives its own ““novel””. Because I am that much of a simp.
So now... I decided to take all this scattered and disorganized mess and combine it into something neater. Behold! ...This blog!
This is an askblog for Shuu, Kazuaki, Hitori, and Tohri, from my fanfiction series, which will update along with new chapters of the fanfiction, and you may or may not impact the way the story will flow! Or you can just call Shuu a gay baby and make me draw his reaction.
The more in-depth about page is here, the rules page is here, the muses are here, and the fanfic series itself... is here!
Because yeah, you kind of have to read all the chapters that have been written thus far to be up-to-date with the plot. it’s like an ARG but not mysterious. Please dont fret, there are only 11 chapters so far... 52k words... I mean, you don’t gotta get into the plot if you just want to call Shuu a gay baby. I GUESS.
maybe this’ll be a complete failure and i’ll just retreat onto the old pseudo-askblog pseudo-rp pseudo-send me hatoful art requests format. but hey it’s worth a try.
Tumblr media
Also, I renamed the AU from “Shrine” to “BitterSweet” because that certainly fits the story better. But because I’ve used it for so long and it still sounds catchy, I’ll still call these AU hc-based characters “Shrine Shuu” “Shrine Hitori” etc.
anyway feel free to ask the dudes whatever you feel is relevant! assume that the current status is; right after the recent chapter “Relevation!”

ROUND 4B, MATCH 1 OUT OF 2!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Propaganda Under the Cut:
Hotaru Yura:
Girlie has an entire pocket dimension just for sleepovers.Gets compared to a rabbit that died in its sleep by another character but that's neither here nor there.Their magical girl story actually revolves around how they love sleep so much her friend is worried she's ignoring her other basic needs. She's fine,it's revealed that she puts just enough effort into tasks in order to fall asleep right after she does them since she loves sleeping so much and I think that's relatable tbh.
Her outfits are so pretty and her being sleepy is relatable (at least to me).

1, 2, 4, 11, and 18 for the end of year asks? :0
Aaah thankyou Echo!!! This post might be long, please forgive me!
1. Did you add any F/Os to your list this year? Were they from new media or just a newly discovered love?
Tumblr media
Here's every romantic F/O added to the list this year, or at least that I can remember adding this year. Years are long and my sense of time is very warped so it may not be fully accurate.
Most are from new media, or just new parts of media, like the end of the Owl House and the New Pokemon Games. The ones that are new loves from re-visits are Heracross, Smeargle, and Keckleon from Monster Mind, Mario and Luigi from Super Mario, Makarov from Fairy Tail, and Jill from The Wayward Children series.
Though Mario and Luigi are also what I consider my first F/Os, they weren't officially on the list until the movie came out, so I'm counting them in the 2023 yearly wrap.
2. Did you reconsume any of your F/Os’ source media this year? How did you feel about the rewatch/listen/read/etc?
I rewatch Assassination Classroom every year in March and it makes me cry every time. I also replay Hatoful Boyfriend and Holiday Star every December for Kazuaki and Hitori, watch Baka and Test sometime around late Summer most years to ease my seasonal depression, and rewatch Mushishi at least once a year.
Other than that, nothing super meaningful. I rewatched a few LPs of Mario games, replayed through Paper Mario myself, watched Romantic Killer again, Reread Manly Appetites every other month or so, watched The Cat Returns once or twice, played more Pokemon, Restarted Monster Mind (still haven't finished it), and skimmed the Ouran Manga at the library while waiting for them to replace the volume they're missing.
HOWever, this latest reread of Down Among the Sticks and Bones is what got me to finally put Jill on the F/O list, so that feels worth mentioning. I love that book <3
4. Was there anything on your blog that you were particularly proud of this year?
No, not really. My drawings were all very incomplete and sketchy this year with long gaps between them, and my writing really flaked off suddenly, I haven't written more than a paragraph at all this year.
I wouldn't say I'm particularly proud of them, but I did really enjoy making moodboards last month and am kind of waiting for my health to settle so I can get back to them. Making stuff for other self shippers is a lot more fun than writing/drawing for myself atm.
11. Was there new media for any of your F/Os this year? If so, what was your opinion on it?
Yes FNaF Help Wanted 2 came out and gave us New Sun Content and I LOVED IT!!!!! He's such a bitch!!!! A shit!!! A snobby theater kid!!! He's so controlling and harsh I LOVE him <3 So happy to know more about him honestly and that he's not all UwU Caregiver that the fandom made him. I like soft characters, but he's a HORROR character he needs to be a little fucked up!!
18. Did you have a favorite trend in the selfship community from the past year?
I'll be honest, I don't pay much attention to what other people in the selfship community are doing. I follow the tags but if there's like a popular trend thing going around, I miss it every time.
My LEAST favorite right now though is the whole "Stolen from an Anti" thing. I have no qualms about stealing posts it's whatever, but I hate when it's says that in text at the bottom of the post. Just tag it as such so I can filter it please

hatoful boyfriend for the fandom meme!
YES
the first character i ever fell in love with:
Nageki. First route I watched. Credit to @fledgling-witch for amazing voice acting
a character that i used to love/like, but now do not:
HA. HA. HA. :) Hitori Uzune. It is no exaggeration when I say I have never felt more anger towards a fictional character in my entire life.
a ship that i used to love/like, but now do not:
hmmm... I originally shipped Ryouta/Hiyoko but now I lean more towards Ryouta/Sakuya & Nageki/Hiyoko
my ultimate favorite character™:
Ryuuji Kawara will you PLEASE stand up. Ok um you don’t need to stand on the lab table. Ok sir please sit down you’re knocking over the experiments
prettiest character:
oh, it’s gotta be Shuu, right?
my most hated character:
Hitori, come right back up for your second award!
my OTP:
Ryuuji/Shuu, Sakuya/Ryouta, Ryouta’s mom/Shuu’s mom.... (yes that’s basically just two OCs but I’d die for them)
my NOTP:
Quail boyfriends, especially when it’s super fluffy
favorite episode route:
Of the non-BBL routes, probably Shuu’s or Anghel’s. Both are just so fun.
saddest death:
pretty sure I was non-stop sobbing from the King’s flashback until the end of the game, so. that.
favorite season game:
I don’t think anything beats BBL, but Holiday Star sure gives it a run for its money.
least favorite season route:
Unfortunately I can no longer watch Professor Nanaki’s route without going into a blind rage
character that everyone else in the fandom loves, but i hate:
HITORI AGAIN... not that everyone loves him but quail boyfriends is still a pretty popular ship
my ‘you’re piece of trash, but you’re still a fave’ fave
This describes most of them but I’m gonna have to go with Yuuya on this one. mon ami~☆
my ‘beautiful cinnamon roll who deserves better than this’ fave:
Listen. Kazuaki isn’t a cinnamon roll. But by god did he deserve better than this
my ‘this ship is wrong, nasty, and makes me want to cleanse my soul, but i still love it’ ship:
oh boy. Technically Ryuuji/Shuu sometimes falls under this category but I already said that so *checks my list of MOST guilty pleasure ships* Yuuya/Sakuya it is. Press F!
my ‘they’re kind of cute, and i lowkey ship them, but i’m not too invested’ ship:
Tohri/Shuu. Why the fuck isn’t this more popular
Gosh I miss Hatoful. Moa where’s that third game (just kidding, no pressure)

End of the Year Fic-Reader ask Meme: numbers one amd three please
As you wish kind anon 💛
End Of The Year Ask Meme
1. A fic that made you laugh out loud
3. A favorite tag from one of the fics you’ve read this year
Hands down nothing has made me laugh as much as @freenklin ‘s Hatoful Purge Series did. Especially the seventh installment and the eight, because the bastard put in so many things they just KNEW would get under my skin. Hugs! Mentions of Iceland! Pinocchio leading the heroes towards their destiny! Nothing could have prepared me for it. 100/10 would recommend to any Hatoful fan.
And I know it’s cheating, but since freenklin gives exactly zero fucks, this damn series has the best tags ever! They’re absolutely part of the package.
My favorites include “#I had a lot of fun writing this because kazuaki gun”
“#kazuaki gun is back! #with a different kazuaki #no braincells only guns”
and, chief amongst them
“#Leone does stuff #WHAT A KING”

do all the same questions i did :3c
1.  Do you like resting your head in a boys lap, or on his shoulder?
⇩  This will be his face for the entirety of this Q&A
Tumblr media
“  O-Oh, my gosh... Well honestly... I imagine that both of these options would be just splendid, but I’d hate to have my hair all messed up if I lay down like that... Resting on a handsome fellow’s shoulder would allow me to wrap my arm around his’, and feel his muscles, so I think I’d love that...  ”
5.  What’s your favorite thing about boys?
“  God, how can you expect me to name just one thing~? Men’s characters and personalities can be truthfully dull a lot of times, but there is plenty to appreciate about the exterior... I love men who are strong and powerful, but have class and use their big arms to carry delicate birds like me to safety...  ”
6.  How do you like your tea?
“  I love sweet teas, fruity, herb-y... Green tea is a classic too, though. Recently I stumbled upon this wicked new kind of tea--apparently it’s imported from an overseas company--that tastes like blueberry cake! It’s quickly become one of my favorites. I’ll have to make sure to buy their entire stock!!  ”
7.  How do you like your coffee?
“  Hmm, frankly I don’t like coffee nearly as much as other drinks... I only drink it during nightly work hours, and in that case I want it to keep me awake, so I don’t add milk and sugar. Black and bitter is fine. Lattes with cream are totally cute, though. ”
14.  Do you like boys taller or shorter than you?
“  Taller, ideally!!!  Which is a bit of a pain, since I’m already flashy and tower over the vast majority of doves... And I wear heels, too. But, I suppose... If his other traits make up for it, I’d find small and compact men appealing as well. It’s cute.  ” well now you just sound desparate sensei
15.  Do you prefer hand kisses, or nose kisses?
Tumblr media
“  H-...H-H-H-... A kiss on the hand is so tremendously romantic and intimate...  -sniffles-  ” sensei are you okay
22.  Do you like sitting in a boys lap, or do you prefer when a boy sits in yours?
“  Sitting in a boy’s lap, without a doubt!  Ahh, dear god, these questions are making me imagine scenarios that make me feel vulnerable and tender, like a butterfly’s wing...  ”
26.  Would you like to take his last name when you marry?
Tumblr media
“  Oh!  I can’t see that happening under no circumstance!!  I take huge pride in my name, you know!  He should feel honored, if we were to marry, to take my name!  ”
29.  What’s a compliment you’d love to receive from a boy?
Tumblr media
“  Mmm... Nnn... Mnnn...  A very special compliment, something much less obvious than  “beautiful”  “intelligent”  “charming”  and  “talented”,  since those are a given... Words only go that far, you know... I think, above all, I wish somebody would treat me, like I’m truly...  special.  ”
30.  What’s better, waking up to him in the morning, or falling asleep next to him at night?
Tumblr media
“  H-How do I choose~?...  I think, I think I’d prefer the latter...  I’ve spent so many lonely nights with the bed, and the house all to myself...  He would love me and caress me at my least decorated, and most delicate state...  We could drift away while softly recalling the events of the day prior...  ”
31.  Any turn offs?
“  Ah, um... Well, I am completely uninterested in people that don’t appreciate art, especially MY art, unhygienic people,  (  that is NOT masculinity  )  and hmm... Actually, I am definitely turned off by flirty guys that try to out-do me in confidence. Cocky types that act like I’m already their property. Show some class and respect me, you!!  ” basically yuuya before he met hiyoko lol
35.  What first catches your eye?
“  Hmm... I think I am a fairly observant person that judges people by their attitude to strangers. Now hey, I am not an extrovert, believe it or not!  Social interaction drains me quite a lot, but that doesn’t mean that I get a free pass on being needlessly rude and not look the other person in the eyes, especially if I want something from them!  But what was the question again?  Ah yes, I think I pay attention to their face, then... And the hair / feathers. Clean, healthy, and vibrant, please. Long hair is gorgeous, but it requires some amount of special care. Don’t just grow it out and then don’t even comb it for five days.
...
HEAR THAT, ISA SOUMA?  ”
39.  Which is cuter, him being confident, or shy?
“  Cuuuter~?  Well shyness 100%. Not to brag, but I will anyway, birds are often shy around me, because I have a beautiful presence. It makes my heart swoon!  The shy, and the self-conscious, and the foppish, and the submissive, they are so fun and I love to watch those birds open up and show their true colors. Like that silver quail, Nanaki Kazuaki!  He’s not really someone I’d pursue romantically (or sexually) but at the same time, his bashful face makes me wanna kiss him!  Well, a little bit.  On the cheek.  A true geode, that one.
Tumblr media
And that stud named One!  He is absolutely a shy little flower bud. Now note that he isn’t shy in the same way that Nanaki Kazuaki is. Nanaki Kazuaki... is anxious and unsure of himself. One-san simply puts on a cold front and acts like a big tough guy that’s unimpacted by anything. But he is kind and a sweetie underneath, I know that for a fact!  A kuudere!  Even if he wants to arrest me, he is soo kind and considerate about me and my well being, teehee!  ”

Oh my GOD Please infodump abt hatoful.... ive repeatedly tried to get into it but have no idea how/how to connect any of the lore. Thanos !
I SAW THE TYPO TOO LATE IT WAS SUPPOSED TO END WITH “THANKS”,
SKDFSKJSLKDFJ no worries anon, it happens to the best of us. Anyways, how should I start this…
So, if you’re totally new here, Hatoful Boyfriend is a visual novel dating sim whose basic premise is “what if cliched boyfriend archetypes… but birds?” And it takes this premise completely wholeheartedly, while still maintaining a comedic tone. You pick classes and club activities each in-game day to increase your skill points, and depending on your levels (and a few dialogue options) you’ll either successfully romance your birdie of choice or get a Bad End. Most of the birds make their interests/level requirements obvious from the start, and you have a bunch of save slots to work with if you wanna go the scum route. Pretty simple and straightforward.
(Actually, that’s a lie, it gets much more complicated later. Don’t worry about that right now.)
Most of HBF is framed through the perspective of the protagonist (I’m gonna use her canon name for convenience) Hiyoko, and she is… not the brightest bulb in the box. Especially in the first game, when events in one character’s route will be foreshadowed in other routes, she will rarely call them out or make note of them. Naturally, this also means some reveals will be spoiled depending on which order you do the routes in. You also unlock documents in the Archive section after completing each route, which adds another level of puzzle piecing to the mix.
(No, this is not the complicated part I was talking about earlier. Sorry.)
In this next bit, I’m going to briefly run through the routes of the first game from least to most complex in terms of lore, as well as what things are foreshadowed when. I’ll also toss in the archive documents when I feel they’re most relevant to the information you have. We ready?
Okosan’s routes: Mostly joke endings, unless there is some greater plot significance to pudding that I’ve missed for all these years.
Ryouta’s route: Mostly about character building, the only real hint you get is that his mother is sickly and it’s implied he inherited this from her.
Azami’s routes: You could get here with the same stats as Ryouta’s route, but then you fuck it up by taking this job opportunity away from him. How rude, Hiyoko.
Sakuya’s first route: He opens up to you about his abusive and bigoted dad, and with some encouragement you encourage him to run away and become a musician like he always wanted. Mr. Le Bel is very important to multiple other characters in this game.
Sakuya’s second route (needs perfect stats/dialogue choices): Same conversation about his dad, but he chooses to live with you instead. Your big hint is at the end, when Yuuya sends you a letter saying there’s “something he’s wanted to tell [Sakuya] for a long time. Something important.”
Yuuya’s route: You don’t actually get to find out what the "important thing" is, whoops. You do find out that Yuuya’s a spy for the Dove Party, Shuu is one for the Hawk Party, and the school has been increasingly influenced by the Hawk Party as of late.
BAD END: You may have gotten it earlier, but now you have context as to who’s killing you when you fail a route- it’s the Hawk Party. The reason why is still unclear.
[CW for gore, child death, medical abuse, suicide, and attempted genocide from here on! This game is a trip!]
Shuu’s first route: Absolutely not a romance route and if you ship Shuu/Hiyoko please block me and tab out immediately thank you very much. You learn that Shuu has been killing students for medical experimentation, confirming Yuuya’s suspicions about the quills in the student store and the food in the cafeteria.
Shuu’s second route (needs perfect stats/dialogue choices): Same ending where Hiyoko dies, but he’s attached enough to her that he takes her head in a jar when he goes on the run. You do learn that Shuu doesn’t care about the Hawk Party’s politics, just that they can enable his personal experiments.
Archive Note 11: Someone (Shuu) knew that Yuuya was a Dove Party agent from the start. He also notes that some of the students are “fascinating”, which you know from his route means they’re good experiment fodder. You learn that he has reason to believe his victims won’t oppose the experimentation, but not the details.
Archive Note 10: Shuu makes notes about human “adaptability measures.” Given that Hiyoko is the only human at the school, you can guess that this will involve her in some way.
Archive Note 06: Notes about the Spanish Flu, how deadly it was to humans, and the connection to an “Avian Influenza.”
Archive Note 04: Notes about a “Goodwill Ambassador” for humanity, who needs a strong natural immunity to Avian Influenza. Hiyoko’s stats show that she has a base level of 800 Vitality, so you can guess that she’s the ambassador. This is why she dies when you fail a route- the Hawk Party saw she didn’t build a good enough connection to the birds, so they take her as a lost cause.
Archive Note 07: Shuu makes notes about “carrier capacity” in the student body, inducing it in some way in a “normal” individual. You can guess this is the details of his medical experimentation, but not who the victim is. You can also guess that the disease to be carried is Avian Influenza.
Anghel’s route: It’s not actually that complicated, but I think you need to complete Shuu’s route before the “mad love of a fallen angel” option is available. (EDIT: you actually just need to complete one playthrough to unlock this option. Even the Azami solo ending will unlock it.)  This ending seemingly undermines all the things we learned about Shuu right before, but this is just Hiyoko’s perspective.
Archive Note 01: A certain student (Anghel) has hallucinogenic properties that can affect bystanders, putting them in a trance-like state. This explains why everything went totally off the rails in his route.
Kazuaki’s route: Again not a romance route (no matter what he says about “waiting”, ew) because the whole point is that Kazuaki is afraid to open himself up to love of any kind. You learn he had someone he cared deeply about in the past but lost, and now he’s been soured from the experience. You also learn that he smells like bleach.
Nageki’s route: You learn that he’s a ghost, that he killed himself in the school some years ago, and that he doesn’t have all his memories. He disappears before you learn anything more, but he’s happy so it’s okay and why am I crying agai-
Archive Note 02: Someone (Nageki) writes about how they are trapped, and can’t remember what happened to them.
Archive Note 05: Nageki remembers he made a promise to someone very important, but he can’t remember who or what it was.
Archive Note 03: Nageki once woke up in a place that wasn’t the library- somewhere with bright lights and a white ceiling. He’s not as trapped as he first thought.
Archive Note 14: Nageki notes that he can move between floors, going from the library to the chemistry lab below. You can guess that the place with the bright lights is somewhere below these two rooms. This also reveals that Nageki knew the layout of the school when he was alive.
Archive Note 12: Nageki notes that after meeting Hiyoko, he feels fulfilled “just as he did back then.” He still can’t remember everything, though.
Archive Note 08: Notes about an underground facility, a fire, and a Subject 00 whose remains are in storage. You can guess that the facility is the place with the bright lights, and Nageki is Subject 00. You can also guess that Nageki set the fire, since he said that he killed himself.
Archive Note 09: Notes about Subject 00′s relative, whose remains are also in storage. You can guess that this is the “important person” that Nageki made a promise to a long time ago.
At this point, the only documents left are Note 13, which is about a terrorist incident at the Heartful House orphanage in which only two birds survived, and Note 15, which is about another terrorist incident some years ago in which the Ave’s High City building was bombed. Nothing in the main routes hints at these notes, so it’s a good time to move to…
Bad Boys Love route: This route is literally the length of the rest of the routes combined, so we’re doin’ more sections, baby!
Kazuaki’s lost loved one and Nageki’s important person turn out to be each other. They were the survivors of the Heartful House incident, and Kazuaki (real name Hitori) took care of his little brother by himself. Nageki was sickly, so he volunteered himself for a medical experiment at the school that could potentially cure him to take the burden off of Hitori.
Unbeknownst to them, the Hawk Party was already in control of the school and their real motive was to investigate the disease Nageki was carrying- Avian Influenza. Shuu was specifically the lead for this project, and he also witnessed the Heartful House incident when it happened. At the time, he went by the name Isa Souma and was a medical researcher. He worked with Ryuuji Kawara, Ryouta’s dad, until Ryuuji’s death from disease.
Ryouta and Hiyoko were also there, because her parents were former human ambassadors too. Unfortunately, they became some of the casualties, which left the two kids heartbroken. Shuu, seeing them and recognizing Ryouta, offered to grant them a wish. They both wished for a world where humans and birds would never fight anymore, which Shuu took to mean “kill all the remaining humans so they can’t fight the birds” because… he’s like that.
Shuu decided that the easiest way to kill all the humans would be to spread the Avian Influenza, and this is why he sought out Nageki. Nageki was forced to kill humans as part of the experiments, and this traumatized him so much that he set the lab on fire to stop it, trapping himself inside. Hitori witnessed this too, and swore to get revenge despite Nageki asking him to destroy his remains and live a happy life. He bleached his feathers and swapped identities with another bird to fake his death, and applied to the school as a teacher under his new name.
Nageki’s plan didn’t entirely work, and the Hawk Party was able to store some of his remains for future experiments with Avian Influenza. This brings us to the timeline of the main routes, where Shuu took advantage of Ryouta’s sickly constitution to make him a new carrier for Avian Influenza. Yuuya tried to interfere on behalf of the Dove Party, but Shuu blackmailed him with the knowledge that he killed his real half-brother because he hated Mr. Le Bel and wanted Sakuya to live instead.
The new strain of Avian Influenza that Ryouta carried was enough to make Hiyoko sick and kill her. The death of the Human Ambassador kickstarts the beginning of this route, and Shuu planned for the humans who would retaliate to also be infected. It doesn’t go as he planned, of course, but that’s laid out pretty well in the rest of the route so I won’t re-summarize it here.
Aaaand that’s about everything for the first Hatoful Boyfriend game! I’ll gladly do infodumps/lore summaries for Holiday Star or the other side materials if anyone wants, but this took almost three hours to write as is so I’m going to give myself a break.
