Hello everyone and welcome back for another 成语故事 aka Chinese idiom or proverb! I have returned to my older books for a break from all the purely historical ones. This is a particularly useful one: 熟能生巧 (shú néng shēng qiǎo), with a fairly literal translation of "with practice you learn the trick" (idiom) and a very clear English equivalent of "practice makes perfect". Let's get to it!

Back in the Northern Song Dynasty there was a young man named 陈康肃 (Chén Kāng Sù) who was exceptional at archery. He could pin small birds circling high up in the air and shoot the leaves of poplar trees from 100 paces away. He was so good that his friends called him the "God's Hand Archer" and he became quite prideful. One day he was out in the garden shooting arrows when an old man selling oil stopped by. The man set down his wares and stood off to the side, watching. Seeing that he had an audience, Chén Kāng Sù began to shoot arrow after arrow, with 90% of them hitting the bullseye of the target! Despite watching this for a long time, the old man made nary a sound and eventually got up. Chén Kāng Sù became quite irate, asking: "Do you even understand archery? Can you not see how good I am? Don't tell me you dare to scorn my technique!" The man shook his head and said: "I really couldn't see clearly, but you seem to have a skilled hand, that is all. I don't know archery, but I also have a skilled hand. Come, you can see for yourself." Chén Kāng Sù watched in silence as the man set up his bottle gourd and covered the opening with a small coin (t.n. coins in ancient China had square holes in them, look up 方孔钱). The old man picked up oil with a spoon and neatly poured it from up high through the center into the gourd without even a drop touching the coin. The man said: "See? This is nothing special, just a skilled hand, nothing more." Chén Kāng Sù admired the man for his ability and wise words, and smiled as he sent him on his way.
