boothill already having to deal with the inability to curse was bad enough. too many times when he tried to even be sarcastic with you results in the sweetest petnames and compliments in replacement of his vulgarity. however, what if it reached to the point where he can’t even flip you off?

the both of you engage in a semi playful back n forth, eventually his responses were littered with terms like “cutie”, “baby” and you’re personal favorite, “honeybun”. finally reaching his last straw, he sticks his fist up and sticks up his middle finger.

his metal finger immediately locks up, rendering it stuck in place with loud clicks! as he tries again and again. not even pulling it up with his other hand works, leaving you to watch while trying your damn hardest not to laugh.

Long, in depth ones? This feels like kind of a cop-out because to me it feels obvious, but the best comments to me are ones which point out things the reader liked, which have cogent questions to ask about what was written, comments which recognise things I put in on purpose and which point out things I didn't think of in those terms but which make sense! It's very rewarding to just know that your work and effort is appreciated and being engaged with, and that people are meeting that effort with effort of their own.

🍦 ⇢ name three good things about a character you hate

So I don't really hate many characters? I hate characters I feel are useless or which undermine the plot by their existence, but I think a lot of characters I dislike serve some kind of purpose and can even do it well - I don't like Scanlan, but he is a well-crafted character.

Consequently the easy pick for me to answer about would probably be MCU Tony Stark but uh, fuck no, because the things his existence serves are all kind of fascistic underpinnings of the superhero genre and I don't wanna do that, thank you.

So instead I'm gonna go with Scanlan because while I don't hate him I can at least say there's things that are good about him:

Namely, his avoidance of consequences and blame for his own part in his friends not knowing something was wrong is pretty accurate to how people do that when they don't want to negatively impact their own self-image. I viscerally hate how he blames them all for not reading his mind when he purposefully deceived them, but it is an accurate depiction of those kinds of people and that kind of behaviour, so I can respect Sam Riegel's skill there.

He can actually be kind of funny sometimes.

The number of times one of Scanlan's random spell choices saved the entire group is stupidly high. Riegel doesn't have the same knowledge of character skills or strategy as, say, Travis does, but his ability to just wing it and make Scanlan's random selection of items and spells work is genuinely impressive.

“We spoke to Scanlan,” Vex says quietly. In the soft light from the candle she’s gilded at the edges, the play of light and shadow striking enough to make Percy want to capture it in pencil. Then her words hit him and he stiffens. The wry twist of her mouth says plenty. “Are you both all right?” “Fine,” he says which is… not untrue, physically there’s nothing wrong with him and Cassandra is no different from usual. It’s just not the whole truth. If anyone should understand his particular defensiveness, he thinks it’d be Vex with all her careful tact.

Technically that's 100 words, but oh well.

☁️ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ───────────── trinity usually had strict rules when it came to the contraband tucked away in her kate spade pencil case: they were only for practicing and the early stages of rehearsal. ever since the tonys she’d gotten a lot stricter with the amount she took. coming so close to be found out, exposed for being a fraud, encouraged her to take a step back from the harm she was causing to their body. until harrison broke up with them. it quickly spiraled out of control then because she felt like they had none. trinity didn’t understand what they had done wrong, what part of their performance as the doting partner had been unbelievable. it would be too pathetic to ask for notes, question what she could have done to be better so they could get it right next time so they retreated into old habits. the kind that let her believe she was building themselves up to be better, to be perfect. when they thought about it that way, it was easy to toss a pill in her mouth before leaving for the party. it became much easier to float through the party with her body buzzing with energy. every small compliment on their outfit turned into a conversation, leaving her with a different kind of high each time they got someone to smile or laugh at their words. she swept across the dance floor with familiar faces and strangers who were pulled in by the flow of their dress and the sound of her laugh.

the adderall had made them hyper focused on talking and dancing with any party goer willing to give them attention, she hadn’t realized how thirst she had become until there was a drink in their hand. the champagne glass was downed in under thirty seconds, and she quickly went in for another when their hand brushed across that of another’s reaching for the same glass. “ oh, i’m sorry ! ” was her voice too loud ? they couldn’t tell with how hard their heart was hammering in their ears. “ you should go on and take it, i think i saw a tray of armand rose at the end of the table i’d love to grab. never been a big fan of cristal anyway, i’m just so damn thirsty. ” instead of the drink, her hand reached to pluck a macaroon from the tray only to find the nearest napkin to spit it out in after one bite; their back turned to the other so they would be saved from seeing something that unsightly. “ that is not from laudrée that’s...─── i’m sorry, may i ? ” they didn’t wait for confirmation as she picked up the glass they’d previously relinquished. it was meant to be only a sip, but that soon turned into the whole glass. “ ── that’s definitely more of a lafayette...── maybe a macaron parlor ? ” they shook their head as if that would help get rid of the taste. “ have you ever been ? i hope not, for your own sake. it’s so much easier to just go to ladurée. it won’t taste like rose scented hand sanitizer that’s somehow been smoked...─── oh, your drink. i’m sorry. we should get you another, hm ? ”
