But, the entire concept of the girlboss Barbie mythologizing Mattel is going for and Diablo Cody being.... right.... about the issues surrounding that (and tbh, very tame in her critique) aside, I can't help but wonder about how much of the centering of Ryan and Ken has to do with a mercenary evaluation of how Margot Robbie's career trajectory and the public perception of her changed in between her being cast as Barbie and the movie's promo actually beginning

I think the reason why there are no gay fanfics really about Jake or Josh Kiska is because with Josh he had just came out recently about him being queer. And you know sometimes the fandom has a tendency of writing fanfics about anything new about the boys whether it’s content in, TikTok, or content at a show. Either way they tend to write fan fictions about any little bit of information. I am too surprised that they haven’t written about queer fanfiction, but it may come off as disrespectful for those who actually live the life of queerness. 

Ahhh, I can totally see that! And I think that's the case with a lot of parasocial fan/artist relationships, we only know what is out there so we have to write about whats canon and then make assumptions based on who we know them to be (because parasocial relationships are weird but if you consume any media it's inevitable).

As a queer person I can totally see why some writers wouldn't write queer fan fiction for the boys. I guess I was surprised to see none about Josh but I guess in a way it's because it's still new and maybe they are trying to be respectful? (like you said)

Also I know there are PLENTY of men/non-binary ppl who listen to gvf, but I do think the majority of the fandom on tumblr and Ao3 are women writing hetero fanfiction, which isn't a bad thing at all I can see that not having fan fiction that represents you could be difficult, like any form of media that lacks representation.

That being said, I do want to be respectful, so I do plan on doing research, but if I end up not being the right person to write and post, I fully accept that! While I want to provide writing for everyone, my perspective is of a queer/bi cis woman!

when someone tells me their favourite comic writer is frank miller my response is the same as when someone tells me their favourite films are american psycho and fight club — i immediately prepare for an irish exit from the convo.

both (some of) miller’s work and those films are influential pieces of art with explicit political ideology, but while american psycho and fight club are (frequently) misinterpreted satire, miller is genuine to the point of hilarity.

if u consume batman as a character in any capacity u cannot escape miller’s influence — batman: year one is the pretty definitive starting point for most fans (and filmmakers, like matt reeves with the batman 2022), and miller’s visual style is a cornerstone for modern comics. the dark knight returns effectively changed how comics were viewed by readers, and is credited with kickstarting the modern age of comic books. i cannot emphasise that even if u haven’t read a miller book u have certainly encountered someone else inspired by his work.

with that said — miller writes like how a racist libertarian who believes his own hype would write about superheroes. greta, u must be wondering, that seems like an awfully specific descriptor to assign to someone. and normally u would be right!

the because im batman schtick that every sixteen year old nolan stan with a twitter account ran into the ground circa 2014 started because of miller, and his success in the 80s led to a number of ill advised projects fueled by his own hype. all star batman and robin was an uncritical interpretation of bruce that embodies all the worst misinterpretations of dc characters, including the justice league, that miller then tried to espouse was satire. unfortunately, he is not smart enough to punch up instead of down — the absurd hypersexualisation of women doesn’t become satire just because you’re laughing at readers in the script, frank.

this, in turn, led to one of the most virulently racist comics ever published — 2011’s islamophic nightmare fuel holy terror. he should not be taken seriously as a creative force, and he should not be the foundation of what comics should be. at least alan moore is marginally less obnoxious and fully admits that the killing joke was a bad idea.

You know what ALOTO has NONE of? The "Predatory Lesbian" stereotype.

Too often in wlw media there's this stereotype of a lesbian (usually butch) who has this bravado, "I could treat you better than your boyfriend could" or "I could turn you" type of energy. While some girls might see this as sexy and confident, I see it as predatory and uncalled for.

But in ALOTO, they avoid this stereotype perfectly! A few examples:

Jo and Maybelle We see from the very beginning that Jo is fawning over Maybelle, especially with her "What's your type?" "Blondes" response:

Is she being flirty? Yeah! But from then on, she's just as respectful and playful with Maybelle as she is with the rest of the girls, and never makes a move or does anything to make Maybelle uncomfortable. Maybelle never felt threatened by Jo, or even with the reality that she might be gay after all. In 1x07 she says, "And so what if she's queer?" And reminds Shirley that above all else, Jo is their friend.

2. Lupe & Carson 1x01 scene

In 1x01 when they're at the bar, Lupe and Carson are small-talking about running away from home. Lupe comments on her haircut, Carson says, "I don't think I look that different, though." Lupe gives her a knowing smile and backs away, saying "Eh...you kinda do."

In MY opinion, she's appreciating her haircut in a way that says, "You look kinda hot now," but is perfectly nice and doesn't do anything other than compliment her. (The fact that it just adds to Carson's Gay Awakening isn't Lupe's fault, LOL.)

3. Shirley's Perspective

Shirley is used as the traditional/fearful view of gay people, the "You're a lesbian and I'm a woman, therefore you MUST be in love with me!!" perspective. But the story is great about using the other characters to nonchalantly point out how dumb that is (her 1x07 convo with Maybelle, Carson's "That's not how it works" comment, lol). They don't make it into a huge political statement, they literally just look homophobia in the face and go "WHO TF CARES"

4. Honorable Mention: Carson & Greta

Carson & Greta is obviously a huge topic, but I just want to point out that I don't believe Greta was acting predatory or pursuing Carson in any way. She only acted on signals that she believed Carson was giving her, and was brave (stupid?) enough to act on them.

Even when Greta brings up Charlie in conversation, she's never bitter or disparaging about him, other than to say that he looks boring lol. No man-hating lesbians here, people!

ANYWAY, I just love that the girls have nothing but respect for each other as friends & teammates, and that their sexuality is only deemed a "threat" to external forces (except for Shirley, who again has an awesome self-realizing arc in that regard.)

any, really! i agree with everything you said. i think that in the flatmate universe, it would be you guys when you're older and married with the kids, and you'd take them to see it - you'd all laugh a lot, and matty would probably get really emo about the Difficulties of Womanhood stuff thinking about how it affected you and how it'll likely affect your daughters and how he's going to do (well, continue to do) all he can to minimise the hardships for his three girls. you'd probably look pointedly at him when ken starts playing guitar at barbie, but smiling, and matty would slide down in his seat in embarrassment thinking about all the times he did the same thing to you when you were younger lmfao. as for birthday party matty, he'd be delighted at how well-constructed the film was (ie... postmodern. meta. self-referential. deep. but also fun!), and he would ABSOLUTELY be like "babe! it's you!" about nobel prize in literature barbie and cuddle you when you get all shyly excited about that fact - like you said, he'd discuss it in-depth with you and really take an interest in what you had to say about the film and greta and her work (you're a writer. of course you've made matty watch little women lmao). d word is very similar, again like you said, with the deep chats and interest in the construction of the film - i think you probably make a few jokes to him during the opening dreamhouse montage like "barbie at her very best", and then when ken has his little mojo dojo casa house you and matty turn to each other like "oh, no, THAT'S atvb lmaoooo". on the way home, matty's like "those feelings barbie had in the real world for the first time, and the shit she went through... that wasn't exaggerated, was it?" and you're like "unfortunately not"; matty shakes his head like "i hate that. i'm sorry, sweetheart", and you smile softly at him like "you're fine, matty, you don't have to apologise to me on behalf of all men. besides, i think the film showed that all genders struggle with expectations and roles really well, no?". matty's like "oh, definitely, i appreciated that a lot, but... i would quite like to do something for you to say sorry. as a feminist act lol" - you grin and say "well, in that case... i could do with a back massage", and matty's like "babe that's a treat for me. but whatever you want, you'll get" lmao. basically any matty would be ideal <3

The conversations around Barbie are very weird to me. Retrospectives are happening too fast on film twitter to be honest. Looking back at Fight Club years later makes sense, American Psycho, etc... but how are we already looking back at Barbie, a movie that came out last year as being *checks notes* not that good actually lmao and not deserving of award recognition? Mind you it will walk away with two, at most, oscar wins so what are we really upset about?

Same people mad at the America Ferrera nom I bet had nothing to say about RDJ getting a nom for tropic thunder, or Johnny Depp getting a nom for playing a fucking pirate. All comedies. So do we want the academy to acknowledge comedies (and horror) or just the ones we personally like?

I want to end on this 'Ryan being nominated and not Margot is dumb' convo and I hope what I'm about to say makes sense lol. Ryan and Margot gave the same level of performance IN MY OPINION. They just did. Very good performances that are on par with each other so if you snub one, snub the other haha I don't care. BUT at the end of the day it wasn't margot vs ryan because they are not in the same category. Y'all are trying way too hard with the "this was exactly what the movie was trying to say" narrative when it comes to these nominations. It's never going to be that serious. Margot will be on that stage as a producer if Barbie wins picture. Greta got the adapted screenplay nomination. Again, what are we really upset about?

Barbie was a huge achievement that deserves most of the noms it got, the snubs are not a big deal, the movie is good, the monologue is corny to you lmao get over it.

they all come back after the off-season to the peaches house, carson, lupe and jess (and esti) spent at least part of the off-season together while greta was off in new york working

in a (poor) attempt to forget and get over greta carson goes to bars with jess and lupe and has some flings, never more than one night and nothing ever means anything to her

carson and greta are friendly with each other but distant because they haven't really talked during the off-season and both don't know where they stand with each other (both still head over heels for the other but doubting if the other feels the same)

jess and lupe right away catch up with greta, making her feel welcome and they if she's over carson and not wanting to seem a simp she says she is (they don't believe her)

jess and lupe start 'moking' carson about the fun she had during the off-season whenever people ask and somehow always in gretas earshot and with every comment she gets more jealous but can't show it because she said she's fine

at first she makes snarky remarks about them being too risky and what would happen if they had gotten caught but the longer the two weeks before the first game go on the more she just tries to avoid hearing about it

it keeps greta from approaching carson to sort them out because she things carson doesn't care anymore, carson interprets gretas non-approach as greta not caring anymore

greta finally has enough when during their first game a player of the opposite team winks at carson, unassuming enough for everyone else but saying enough for people in the know

they finally talk and the only piece of convo i have in my head is when it finally clicks for carson and she goes "oh my god you weren't actually mad, you were jealous!"

I keep seeing posts calling Carson Shaw a baby lesbian and she's not. She's bisexual. This is super important to the character her development and story.

Carson and Max had a whole convo about feeling in between and the isolation that comes with it. Carson feeling in between her attraction/love for Charlie and Greta; Max feeling in between about how she presents herself which is reflected in the struggle with her mom and new developing relationship with her uncle.

It's all about feeling stuck on the end of a binary when you're actually somewhere in the middle. Don't be like the folks in the show, the straights irl, and overlook/erase her identity.

like from ep3-6 i can name 4 instances where greta makes the carson/lupe relationship worse omg

carson says they need to practise more and so they have night practises -> greta convinces the team lupe cant be trusted and has night games behind her back -> lupe finds out and gets carson benched out of spite -> carson is annoyed but more annoyed at dove humilating lupe by letting her play -> lupe is benched due to injury -> lupe starts to see that carson may have been right and tries to reach out to her asking about her game cards -> carson vouches for lupe but dove keeps her benched which obviously puts her in a bad mood -> dove leaves theyre now co-captains which they both seem to be content with -> lupe suggests a change in batting order and carson agrees -> work together to defeat the cheating team -> lupe asks to pitch again and carson is apprehensive (probably bc things have just been going so well for them as is) -> the convo gets interrupted by GRETA who tells her no one will choose lupe over carson and lupe gets rightfully upset -> carson also too proud to admit that her gf is wrong and lupe IS right when it comes to 'whos the better coach’ ala esti stealing going wrong -> lupe asks to go on and carson says no bc she’ll get hurt -> lupe angry bc of this -> shut the fuck up gill -> high tension fight breaks out -> lupe gets most the blame bc shes not white and carson gets coaching responsibilities -> carson tries to make weak amends by asking her to pitch but lupe, still upset, says no -> carson lowkey bad coach everyone hounds her -> greta asks lupe what her deal is and lupe shouts at carson -> carson cries -> carson tries to force lupe to start but lupes still not having it -> max calls carson out on her inability to stick up for those who need it -> carson sees lupe hating herself -> carson apologies and lupe accepts -> carson puts her full trust in lupe and lupe lets her -> winning streak -> carson sees lupe talk to a comet -> greta tells carson she thinks its bc lupe wants to get traded bc she cares more about winning than the team -> doubt/distrust from carson which causes her to follow lupe to the gay bar -> miscommunication confrontation -> thank fuck jess is here to clear things up -> happy family from here on out yes? 

like the only time carson is solely responsible is when shes being a Naive White Woman™ who probably doesnt even notice the racism lupe is facing (no one did until she told jess about it) in relation to herself getting off scot-free. [ep5] shes mostly just dumb and doesnt have a backbone in an accidentally harmful way. and doesnt realise how it looks to lupe.
