It was often said that opposites attracted, and the Starkes did nothing to dispel that notion. Hans had always been the social one, the smooth talker who could make himself fit in anywhere, who liked spending nights away. Adam had always been quieter, and felt more suited to nights like this - a homebody who was more than happy to indulge domestic nights. Henry had just gone down to sleep and that left his parents to their own devices. Adam was camped, as he often tended to be, at their dining room table, papers and books spread out around his laptop as he typed up notes.
"I've been thinking about something," he says finally, to break the comfortable silence. "Y'know how I always said I'd never run for anything again?"

The whole idea of ‘happy wife, happy life’ had always seemed like a cliche - but nonetheless, it was one Will tried to stick to, since it mostly seemed to be true. He’d been sent out on a mission by his wife to get some kind of shelf - something that’ll look nice in the living room, she’d ordered - and that found him wandering the maze that was the showroom, dodging millennials left and right, feeling like he didn’t belong here.
That was when he encountered Hans Starke, perhaps the last person he had ever expected to meet in an IKEA. He scoffed to himself, perhaps simply because the whole thing felt so ludicrous. “Are you as lost as I am?” He prompted, only half-joking (and half-very-much-not joking). “Or do you speak.... Norwegian?”

He snakes an arm around his husband’s waist, grateful to have finally found him in the crowd. Adam’s always got a habit of losing Hans in places like this - turning around and three seconds later, Hans has found someone else to talk to. It’s a skill Adam’s always admired, almost envied.
“This reminds me of a few dates,” he says, leaned in so his lips are close to Hans’s ear - the crowd noise and music bound to make it difficult to hear and he tries to make it easier. “Have you been having fun without me?” It’s a playful accusation, but he can’t deny that it’s also tinged with concern - after what Hans had said about New Years, he’s anxious about an environment like this.
