why you should read Mystic Prince if you enjoyed ORV

Mystic Prince / Prince of Myolyeong (묘령의 황자) is a fantasy and action-adventure manhwa with art & story by Aheuredal (아흐레달) and in my humble opinion, an absolute hidden gem. it's literally one the best manhwas i've ever read (among the top 2) and i've finally gathered my thoughts enough to try to articulate why i love it so much, and hopefully convince you to give it a chance!

here's the official summary on webtoon:

An immortal emperor rules the Kingdom of Yeol, a divine country blessed by gods with awesome powers. After a thousand years of peaceful rule, the time has come for a new emperor to be chosen. This is determined by a series of trials, in which twenty princes with special powers who have trained since birth must compete. As all princes of varying personalities and agendas gather to partake in the trials, intrigue and possibly even bloodshed seem all but certain. Meanwhile, unbeknownst to the other princes, the Fourth Prince Jeok-yeon Ryu hides a secret he must guard with his life.

Mystic Prince is incredibly unique in terms of story and execution that i can't really compare it to anything else but here's why i think you'll enjoy it, especially if you also liked orv:

strong-willed MC who's not naturally skilled but works extremely hard

said MC is willing to suffer and hurt themselves to achieve their goals (aka kim dokja-esque tendencies)

seemingly cold and aloof ML with yoo joonghyuk vibes at first, naturally gifted and seems to look down on everyone

...but is actually head over heels for MC and just doesn't know how to express his feelings

ensemble cast of incredibly complex and well-developed characters with different personalities and motivations

MC seems a little dense at times but they have a tragic backstory that explains why they're Like That

incredibly bisexual vibes !! like literally off the charts

slowburn romance that is cooking up such a great meal

MC and ML have actually known each other for centuries

characters go through trials that involve risking death

extremely unique lore and world-building

i said ML before but there are actually multiple potential MLs with how much complexity all the character dynamics have

beautiful character designs (literally over 10+ within the main cast and they're all so unique)

evocative writing and heartfelt monologues that seem taken out of a book of pure poetry

narratively significant motifs of fire and water (à la orv's black/white and reader/protagonist)

profound and realistic depiction of the inner feelings and troubles that the characters go through

incredibly heart-wrenching original soundtrack! (actually made me cry)

some of the most gorgeous art i've seen in any manhwa (seriously pls just open the 1st episode and look at the first few panels)

delicious gender fuckery

MC is actually cross-dressing afab (i personally hc them as genderqueer; korean doesn't have gendered pronouns but the official tl uses she/her pronouns)

bonus: they're built like a fucking tank (as seen here) like hello??? which is so refreshing to see for an afab MC

plus they're also canonically lacking in empathy but still deeply compassionate which again is really refreshing

i'm sure there's even more stuff i'm forgetting but these are just some reasons off the top of my head why i think this manhwa is so amazing

please do give Mystic Prince a chance, it's an absolute delight!! there are multiple beautiful covers but here's a couple of them, BE ART BAITED <3

and finally some of my personal reactions to Mystic Prince and also a note regarding the content warnings under the cut!

feel free to skip this part lol but personally when i look for recs, i love when people tell me their emotional reactions and how passionate they are about it! so if this tells you anything,

this is the ONLY manhwa to have made me cry so far (yes that includes the orv webtoon, but not the novel ofc) like actually ugly sobbing with snot and tears and everything lmao

(it's not all sad though! this manhwa will have you clutching your heart one moment and then cackling out loud the next)

and it's also the ONLY manhwa i've ever spent actual money on before the fan tl picked it up just so i could read the advanced chapters (i'm notoriously cheap so this says a lot imo)

and i'm not alone in this, every other comment on webtoon is people saying the exact same thing. the general consensus is that this is 100% a hidden gem (webtoon DP my behated why'd you have to shoot yourself in the foot like that)

also regarding the content warnings on the carrd: this was my first time making a list of cws (i don't think anyone else has made one yet?) and i was a little hesitant to add them, so i sincerely apologize if i missed anything!! if anyone else has anything else to add (cws or otherwise) then please feel free to send me a message and i'll be happy to edit it!!

Hear me out… detective couple.

When I read your bio, I kind of honed in on your intuition. At first, heizou is a little on edge. He’d originally just hired you as a secretary to take requests and write down cases for him to focus on, but he couldn’t help but be intrigued when you’d make off-handed comments about them.

You talked about someone who came in and asked Heizou to investigate the mysterious disappearance of his business partner. The guy seemed severely distraught, but you’d had a bad feeling about him from the beginning. His actions just seemed… off to you, giving you a strange feeling in the pit of your stomach that was hard to shake.

Later on, it came to light that the man was behind his partner’s disappearance. He didn’t want to share the fortune, and played it off as a kidnapping from a rival business.

After many more cases with similar circumstances, Heizou started to pay more attention to you. He’d ask your opinion on things, letting you take your time and read over evidence and statements that he’d collected. Heizou would take anything you said into consideration, not hesitating to look into something you felt wasn’t right.

You became his partner in solving crime, the Watson to his Sherlock, and started to develop an unbreakable bond— the foundation of trust and partnership built long before you had actually become a couple.

Once you are a couple, though, the crime stopper partnership doesn’t end. If anything, it grows stronger. You’re hanging out way more outside of work, and Heizou will even take the day off for the two of you to have a date or take a break if he feels like you’re overworking yourselves.

Often takes you to theatre productions in Inazuma. Marionette puppet shows are common, and sometimes they are inspired by cases that the two of you solve. It’s a fun date night— spending time together, reminiscing of the past.

When you’re busy daydreaming on the job, Heizou just smiles. He assumes you’re working hard and thinking about a case, even if you’re definitely just daydreaming about him. Or the book you’re reading. Or literally anything else. He’s so proud of u.

It takes the both of you a while to fully open up to each other, but the vulnerability and level of closeness you have with each other is worth the wait. Heizou is someone you can genuinely trust and depend on with your life, and he feels the same about you. He picks up on the tiniest things about you and is never wrong with his observations.

When you’re passive aggressive to someone you’re not too fond of, Heizou knows. When your social battery is running low, Heizou knows. He makes the best escape plans for any situation, and gets the two of you alone quickly. For your sake, of course. Totally not also because he wants some alone time.

Ultimate Ongoing Rofan Favorites in No Particular Order

((ongoing as in unfinished. some of these are on hiatus etc))

These are titles I've enjoyed from start to finish with no inhibitions and the ones I without fail always find myself looking forward to. People who are into rofan manhwa probably already know all of these, but I still wanted to put them in one place (:

1. A Stepmother's Märchen

What is there even to say anymore. Absolutely incredible story that does so much justice to all its themes and characters and that is drawn PHENOMENALLY. If you somehow still haven't read it PLEASE do. You won't regret it. Personally I think it doesn't get better than Stepmother's Märchen in this genre.

2. I Stan the Prince

This story brings me the most joy. I would say out of all of these I Stan the Prince has the best romance, i.e. dynamic between the two leads. I can't get enough of them and watching their relationship grow so tenderly is wonderful. Catch me giggling and kicking my feet alongside Angela, the protagonist, who by the way is incredibly lovable, it's impossible not to be fond of her. The art is another thing entirely - it's so obvious how loved this story is by how alive and full of endearing little details every single panel is. It just makes me feel warm inside.

3. A Wicked Tale of Cinderella's Stepmom

Best mom award goes to Mildred, my favorite rofan protagonist. She's in her forties, she's a dignified and wise noble lady, she was fully and seriously prepared to kill a man for hurting one of her daughters. I like the male lead but I'm also bitterly jealous of him because that should've been me. This is a story about women being awesome, and not in a superficial way!

4. Catherine’s Key to a Happy Life

I can't fully articulate why, but this series makes me think about Howl's Moving Castle. None of the characters are particularly similar, but something about the atmosphere makes me enchanted in the same way. I think Catherine could be a Ghibli protagonist.

Mysterious and lovely with an intriguing storyline. Chezare is one of the most charming male leads I've seen.

5. I Raised My Fiancé with Money

This one is new, but I can already tell it's most likely going to continue being very good. I don't have too much to say. The art is lovely and so is the very endearing male lead whose journey of overcoming his insecurity and low self-esteem is the center of the story right now. This manhwa's fashion game is on another level - Ilya never fails to look immaculate, and her throwing her seemingly neverending money around never gets old.

6. The Perks of Being an S-Class Heroine

Rofan with action! It can be silly and funny at one moment and thrilling at the other. The next season is looking to be amazing, taking everything that the series' been building up and realising it, and the story is already very fun and engaging. The "tower-regressor-S-class hunter" genre of manhwa has been little by little meshing with rofan lately and I think this is the peak of how well that can be done.

7. Loveless Heroine

Thai manga!!! Now THIS is what I call a historical romance. Loveless Heroine interacts with its setting constantly and is very thoughtful about the way it represents the time period it's set in. There are also some queer themes which I absolutely love! This story feels mature and grounded, and I can't get enough of it.

8. Surviving as a Maid

This series has such a soft, melancholic feeling to it. At times it's empty, a little sordid, but it's also full of beautiful moments that you remember for a long time after reading. There's a lot of longing for many different things and I would say quite a bit of grief. Ash is a very unique and relatable protagonist with her own fears, flaws and dreams, and I like how both big and small her life is. Surviving as a Maid also feels very grounded, but in a different way from Loveless Heroine.

• Body Electric by Dong Ye ( completed, supernatural, lots of trigger warnings and plotty )

Ba Song is the hotshot cop who’s been handed an open-and-shut case: the suicide of a young woman. Except… who commits suicide by stabbing their own body and strangling themself? There's only one man who can help him with this mystery — Bo Shan, the renowned forensic pathologist with a severe and cold personality. What's more, his body produces bioelectricity, allowing him to acutely sense bodily injury with his touch. There's an electric current between them, and each touch sizzles with energy

If you like crime dramas and stories where they solve mysterious cases then this is for you. The romance is subtle, and their relationship is not insta-love. strangers to colleagues to friends to lovers trope. This also discusses alot of issues the society has that will make you stop and think. Ba Song is really the honorable MC in here who always wants to help people and do good. While Bo Shan is the reluctant one but deep inside, he wants to make a difference too. I wish they would make a donghua or live action out of this.

• 30 year old by S-Monkey - ( ongoing, age difference, blind dates, slice of life)

Charlie Wei is a single and handsome executive. He’s also a closeted gay guy who’s been on way too many bad blind dates with women. Charlie’s still hung up on his ex-boyfriend James and is… gasp, 30! Charlie’s family thinks he’s straight and too old to be without a wife! During another bad blind date, Charlie meets the flirty Ethan, who both annoys and intrigues him. Can Charlie finally come out and find true love with Ethan or will he continue on his streak of bad blind dates?

The cover looks melodramatic but it’s really not. This is so funny! I read this because people were saying it reminded them of BoXiao. And yes, there are moments here that remind me of them, but it’s more like an AU of BoXiao. I stayed up late trying to get caught up in the chapters and you won’t realize it cause it’s just that good. I love seeing the older MC loosening up and being more of himself. and the younger one being more responsible in his career. They just become better versions of themselves because of each other. It’s so sweet!

• I ship me and my Rival - by Pepa ( ongoing, comedy, reads like a meta )

This follows the adventures of Wei Yanzi, a third-rate actor in the Chinese entertainment industry, stumbles onto a shipping fandom for himself and another actor (Gu Yiliang) while trying to escape from the flame wars and negativity. He's so taken with this group of fans who actually see him as a good guy instead of an enemy/rival of Gu Yiliang that he falls head-first into fandom and becomes actively involved in trying to provide shipping fuel and the fans' daily dose of fluff.

IF THERE IS ONE thing you will read here, let it be this. It is hilarious. If you are a CP fan you will relate so much and it’s a good time. It just shows how people who think are rivals can actually be really good friends in real life. What we see is not always what it seems. and people will interpret things based on their bias. The MC here is so dramatic! how his inner feelings/reactions were drawn will make you laugh.

• Path to You - by Sinran (completed, slice of life, age gap fluff and comedy )

When almost college dropout Jensen attempts to drink away his problems, unemployed Nathaniel suddenly pukes on him and ruins his night. As an apology, Nathaniel offers to help Jensen with his studies. Despite Jensen's difficulties in getting along with people, the two become friends and something deeper begins to grow between them

The story is so soft. If you want something with mild angst/misunderstandings— then pick this. I love the progression of their relationship and how they take care of each other. There are other themes showed here other than the romance.

• Red Candy - by Hanse (completed season one with a cliffhanger, explicit scenes, assassins )

Shihyeon, aka “Red Candy,” is a secret agent whose code name comes from bathing in the blood of his marks on dangerous missions. Shihyeon’s tasked with seducing and obtaining intel from Hajun, a hot college professor. Shihyeon can disarm enemies, but didn’t expect to be disarmed himself by Hajun’s own tight body. Now Shihyeon’s caught between loyalty to his spy agency and Hajun. Can Red Candy survive the incoming wave of enemies and still indulge in the sweet ecstasy of Hajun’s embrace?

THIS STRESSED ME OUT MAAAN. Wow. I loved this. That season one cliffhanger. It’s definitely up there as my favorite. If you think about it, the tropes are really not original. An assassin is sent to shadow a person and they develop a relationship. That simple. But NOOOOO! There are so many things going on. The Main mystery plot, Their relationship, their shared past plus you have other sketchy secondary characters. And did i mention explicit scenes? Lots of them. I want this two to have a happy ending!!!

• Lone Swan - by Chu Man (discontinued, cultivation, star crossed lovers)

After losing his memory, Yiqiu Shen, a disciple from the decent sect meets a very special man named Luofeng Yan, who is the leader of the evil Divine Wind Cult. When escaping and conflicting with Yan, Shen gradually finds his original self as well as his previous love back. Together they rip off the facade of the martial world and reveal the hidden true

I didn’t want to add a discontinued story here, with no novel as a source material but this one made an impact on me. so. yeah. THE ART. breathtaking. The plot = layered. There are times I don’t even know who is telling the truth. It had so much potential and i hope it will get picked up again at some point. People rec this to those who enjoyed TGCF and MDZS, and they are right. 👍🏼

• Dragon in Distress by Si Wang Wen Hua - ( ongoing, dragons, past life, lost power, fantasy )

This is a story about a little Eastern green dragon and a little Western black dragon playing together.

The synopsis is pretty simple if you look at it but this one is pretty interesting. and surprisingly funny. tinie AoAo is so cute! 🤍 the other MC has tsundere tendencies tho. Lots of lore and more truths to uncover as the story progresses. I’m not giving it enough justice with how i’m reccing it, but if you like dragons and fantasy — give this a go.

• Breaking through the clouds 2: Swallow the Sea - Huaishang (ongoing, based on a novel, crime, drama, cases)

Wu Yu, a newcomer of the Public Security Bureau, is gentle and frail. He doesn’t care about the difficulties posed by Bu ZhongHua, his strict boss, and only wants to stay in the background to be paid on time with enough for food. However, no one knows that this young man’s head is targeted by top drug traffickers for a large bounty or that this courageous young man has once slaughtered the dragon of the abyss. With a chain of interlocking cases, a series of troubles come one after another. Can the two people work together to survive through the difficulties?

Do you see a pattern with me? lol. I like crime themes. This one is the same and by the looks of it, the cases they solve will take longer to unravel. I haven’t read the novel it’s based on yet so i’m just going with how the manhua is progressing. I like it when Wu Yu turns full on action-mode and when ZH takes care of him. Plus it helps that they are both gorgeous. I’ll get back this with a proper link.

• Where the Wind Stays - by Yusa (completed season one, curses, demons, possession, timeskip, explicit scenes)

To break an ancient curse that plagues the royal bloodline, young Prince Tasara is destined to be sacrificed in death. Nara is enlisted as a palace servant to carry out the prince’s execution when the time comes. But he develops a soft spot for the cursed prince, and after committing an atrocious and unforgivable act against Tasara, Nara is desperate to right his wrongs. Soon, their lascivious relationship that had been kept under wraps tests his resolve. Will Nara be tempted away from his original mission? There’s no telling how far he would go to earn Tasara’s forgiveness.

This story broke my brain, in a good way. I don’t wanna say much cause it will spoil the story. It’s the type that you gave to see and suffer through yourself. I am excited for what happens in season II!!!

2020 just started but a lot has been going on, please stay healthy in these trying times. Hopefully, these manhwas would keep you entertained (like they did to me) and kept you from being too anxious & lonely.

Flirting with the Villain's Dad

Description:

First Impressions: Tower of God

Tower of God/Kami no Tou is an action fantasy anime currently airing this season. I was very interested in this anime due to the intense advertising done by Crunchyroll; obviously an anime being highly advertised doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a good show, but it did make me think that this show was expected to be very popular.

So far, I’ve watched the first three episodes of Tower of God. I was impressed by the fact that this was originally a manhwa webtoon; it’s really cool that something that was originally a webtoon received an anime adaptation.

Something about the art style was slightly off-putting to me, and initially I couldn’t figure out why. The designs of many of the different ‘fantasy races’ in this show are actually very unique, and I think the humanoid faces are pretty cute. I also am generally impressed with the animation; the backgrounds are beautifully illustrated and the action, especially during the frequent fight scenes, is done well. But I think my issue is the flat, saturated color palette. There doesn’t appear to be much shading, like, at all, on any of the characters. It’s not horrible to look at, but it does take some getting used to.

I actually really like Bam, the protagonist. One of my favorite anime tropes is the very positive/kind shonen main character (think Deku, or Tanjirou) and Bam fits very neatly into this character trope. It could be argued that he doesn’t have much of an actual personality yet, but it seems like that’s intentional? He’s basically just obsessed with ‘Rachel’ who we know very little about at this point, but again that seems to kind of be the main conflict.

I also like Khun, despite his character design being kind of ridiculous. His personality contrasts very well with Bam’s, and with Rak (crocodile dude) completing their trio, they make a great team. Some of the other characters trying to ‘climb the tower’ seem like they’re supposed to be huge assholes, but we don’t know very much about them yet.

IMO, the worldbuilding in this show is not super great; I know that inundating the audience with information about an entirely new fantasy world is not recommended, but there almost isn’t enough information being given at all to the point where I don’t even kind of know what’s going on. I’m hoping that’ll change soon as more episodes come out, but at this point I’m way more confused than intrigued.

I’ve mentioned that if I lose interest in a show I will stop watching it, but as of right now I don’t see this happening with Tower of God. I wouldn’t say I’m loving it yet, but I’m a sucker for mystery worlds, and as of right now I want to know so much more about this world that I’m willing to suffer through the confusing drip feed of info that’s happening rn. Rant time | A letter for Antis.

Killing Stalking is a horror manhwa, for those of you who don't know. Not a BL manhwa. It may be tagged as BL because of the high amount of homosexual content, but as someone who's read it in it's entirety, I can assure you that most who read it don't get butterflies in their stomach because of it's sweet and heartfelt moments.

I would like to take a moment to highlight some of the arguments Antis have:

• We don't really like it for the psychological horror aspect.

• Everyone who reads it condones and supports abusive relationships.

• We are all terribly insensitive to rape/abuse victims.

• We all, especially heterosexual women, get some twisted high out of seeing Bum abused and then them having 'make-up sex'.

I'm sure there are more, but this text post is going to be long enough, as is. Let's start with the first argument.

Psycological horror. One of my favourite subjects. When I first heard of KS, I pictured it as some disgusting BL manhwa. Then I actually read it, because one of my close friends convinced me that I would like it, due to my high interest in psychology. After reading the first few chapters, I was completley intrigued. Was it because I was all, "OMG, Bum belongs with Sangwoo. Tru luv forever. Sangbum will prevail because Sangwoo is actually a good person who deserves all of his wrongs forgiven and forgotten!"? Hell no. I was amazed with Sangwoo from chapter one. Not because of his 10/10 undercut, but because of how interesting his mind was. I'm currently a student who's planning on attending university to become a psychologist. I'm not some basement stalker who's completely messed up. Koogi excellently depicts how a person with a really scary mind could have mood swings, unpredictable behaviours, or even go as far as to make murder a sexual thing in their mind. I am going to take a moment here to show you all an exert from the official Wiki page.

"Killing Stalking became a popular manhwa in early 2017 due to its dark themes, display of psychological manipulation, and depiction of physical abuse and violence. It gives an insightful look of how people with mental illness think, how they see the world and how abuse leaves impacts on their mental development."

Point two; condoning abusive relationships. As a person who was apart of an abusive relationship, I can gaurentee wholeheartedly that I do not support them in any way, shape, or form. People, regardless of sexuality, gender, race, etc. should be in treated with tremendous amounts of respect and care, both physically and emotionally. In saying that, Sangbum is a fictional ship. I don't ship the two together because I think their dynamic is healthy and normal. I think the two, due to Bum's Stockholm syndrome, are an interesting pair to watch, especially when it comes to how their dynamic grows and changes. This isn't the recipe for a healthy relationship in real life, but it creates an engaging dynamic between Sang and Bum that keeps the stakes perpetually high. Do I think they'll ever be a healthy, loving ship? Fuck no. Would I ever wish their circumstance on any people in the real world? Fuck no.

Side Note: Why do you Antis never have a problem with any other shows/literature that depicts unhealthy relationships, like OITNB and Hannibal?

Point three. The insensitivity to rape and abuse victims. This argument is just bullshit. For starters, I would like to say that, for those of you non-victims who feel the need to baby these people, take a step back. Multiple victims have come forth and said that they're not baby's to coddled and protected; they're human beings too who are quite capable of finding their voice, and are even stronger because of their experiences. I have so many friends who are survivors of rape and abuse, and I can gaurentee I'm not insensitive. Anyone who knows me knows that I am the Mom Friend™ and am a loving and caring person. I understand that some people find the content triggering and disgusting, and that's okay. That's more than okay. Just don't read it. Block all of the tags.

Point four. The sexual high. Thank you, stranger, for telling me how I think and feel. As a bisexual woman who reads this for the psychological experience and beautiful art, thank you, kind fucker, for putting words into my mouth. There are going to be people who sexualize it. Just like in everything else. There are people who sexualize the cannibalism in Hannibal. Where's your letter to them?

Listen, I'm just tired of going through the tag and feeling attacked. There's even an anti KS tag. A tag completley dedicated to bullying others for something they love. As a bullying victim, I can say with certainty that it is not alright in any situation. Take something you love. Think about it. Think about it for a long time. And now imagine someone picked every little flaw out of it and bullied you for liking it. Tadaa, Antis. That's you.

If you don't like it, stay out of the tag. Stop bullying others and making excuses for it. There is NO EXCUSE for telling someone they're a bad person because they like a piece of work. NO EXCUSE for bullying, in general.

I'm sure most of you stopped after the first paragraph, but for those of you who didn't, thank you for your time.
