This is a sort of response to a post I've seen floating around, drawing parallels between the chains in Blitz’s trip that bind him to Stolas and the chains that bind Husk, Angel, and Fizz to Alastor, Valentino, and Mammon respectively. I'm not commenting on that post directly bc I avoid Discourse (tm) at all costs for the sake of my health, and I don’t want to get drawn into an unproductive argument that will mess with my anxiety for a week. I'm not trying to start a fight, just get my thoughts out on why I feel that comparison is inaccurate, and hopefully provide some helpful context and nuance.
So! Let's start with a few disclaimers! First of all, I'm not going to debate the moral purity of any of these characters. I just don't think it's an interesting or valuable critique. On a related note, I am not trying to excuse any of their behavior. I'm happy to admit that my favorite characters in this show have hurt people and are sometimes total assholes. Stolas treated Blitz very poorly at the beginning of their relationship, frequently pushed or even ignored boundaries, and was just kind of a dick about things. My objection to a direct comparison between Stolas and the other characters mentioned above isn't because I think Stolas hasn't done anything wrong; I just think that saying they're similar without further clarification or commentary ignores the nuance of the situation.
Read on below the cut, it's gonna be another long one folks!
Let's start by examining the "agreements" forged by Val, Mammon, and Alastor. I think it's important to note that, in their cases, the person they got to sign their contract could have been anyone. Husk and Angel could have been any sinners, Fizz could have been any imp. They aren't interested in them as people; they were only using them to gain more power for themselves. The only thing that matters to them is, "What can you do for me?" Angel and Fizz quite clearly become cogs in the machine of Val and Mammon's businesses, and Alastor only thinks of Husk as a tool to be leveraged in specific situations to further his own mysterious goals. Each of them has demonstrated to their subjugates that they own them, body and soul. They have signed legally and spiritually binding contracts that essentially surrender their autonomy to a more powerful demon.
Stolas and Blitz’s agreement is... not that. In the most literal sense, they don’t appear to have made any sort of binding deal. They just made a verbal agreement, which I sincerely doubt has anywhere near the force of a signed soul contract. Additionally, Stolas did not ask for and does not seem to want that sort of total control over Blitz. He very clearly does not view this as any sort of power exchange (which may actually be part of the issue, since it leaves him blind to Blitz’s discomfort with their class difference), he sees it as "favors for favors." While this agreement is inherently unbalanced due to Stolas's status, it's worth noting that they’re both putting something on the line here. The other three risk practically nothing (if the person bound to them fails they can always get a new one), but Stolas IS taking on a real risk by letting Blitz access the living world illegally using his book. Again, that doesn't make his actions right, and probably helped him to justify them, but it does set their relationship apart from the others.
In my opinion, some of Stolas's greatest flaws are his thoughtlessness and his ability to justify his own actions to himself. This manifests in the fact that he clearly doesn't see the ways in which their relationship is hurting Blitz. He convinced himself that this was just an equal exchange, and a continuation of the dynamic Blitz established in their first encounter as adults: "I fuck you, and you give me the book". As he becomes more aware of his feelings for Blitz, though (stay tuned for a deeper analysis of this progression later), he also begins to realize that Blitz isn't happy with this relationship. And this, as @masonshmason pointed out, is the central fact that separates Stolas and Blitz from the other relationships. Stolas did not realize- or chose to ignore- how he was hurting Blitz. Once he came to terms with it, though, he understood that he had to make things right. He specifically says this in "Just Look My Way"; "I will try to make amends/ For making you means to an end". None of the others could say this, because in their case, that was the POINT. Angel, Fizz, and Husk were ALWAYS a means to an end, intentionally trapped for that purpose.
We also need to talk about the CONTEXT of the scenes in which the chain imagery appears. For both Angel and Husk, the chain is at least semi-literal, a physical (and perhaps supernatural) manifestation of the way their souls are bound to an overlord. In "Two Minutes Notice," Fizz purposely CHOOSES to represent his relationship to Mammon as chains around his wrists. However, Blitz's scene is part of a drug trip after being forcibly dosed with hallucinogens. It does not exist in any literal sense, nor is it a representation of Blitz’s conscious, literal thoughts. What it DOES do is showcase Blitz’s deepest fears and his greatest flaws through symbolism and metaphor. Blitz is not literally afraid of being forced to wear a clown costume; he is afraid he'll never escape his past traumas or Fizz's shadow. THIS is the context in which Blitz sees himself being chained by Stolas: a bad trip all about his fear of intimacy and vulnerability.
Stolas appears in this trip as someone elevated high above him, something he's climbing towards, reaching for, even though it means being chained to him. It's directly preceded by his ex girlfriend and his former best friend berating him for how he pushes people away even though he hates being alone. Then Stolas directly asks him, "Are you afraid to love people, Blitzy?" Furthermore, the WAY in which he is framed is alluring, slightly hazy, golden and tempting. It couldn’t be further from the ugly, slime-covered past he's fleeing. It's a new start, a chance for something better that seems too good to be true. This trip is all about Blitz’s inability to be vulnerable with another person. The chain around his neck is a representation of the fact that, by getting closer to Stolas, he's giving Stolas the power to hurt him emotionally.
And man, there's a part of him that wants to give Stolas that power. At this critical moment, he's not baring his teeth in defiance or anger. He's blushing, just slightly, and he looks... nervous. Blitz's instinct, when things get too real, is to cut and run. Hurt them before they can hurt you. Abandon them before they have the chance to leave you. It’s how he tanked his relationship with Verosika. This is a manifestation of what might happen if he stays. This is the sort of trouble he can't fight his way out of.
This is the emotional climax of the scene. There are so many ways they could have gone with this if they wanted to represent Blitz being chained and trapped by his agreement with Stolas. If that was the fear--if that was the POINT--they could have had the chains wrap around him until he couldn't move, or glow white hot and burn into his skin, or a million other more direct metaphors. But the chains aren't the thing that hurts him. It's the feathers: the thing that's left behind after Stolas abandons him, sing-songing "you're going to die alone" right alongside two other people who he loved and who now want nothing to do with him.
Finally, let's look at Blitz’s reaction to this scene. It's a moment of revelation for him, in which he realizes he's pushing everyone away and starts to make an effort to change. It's why he's a bit more open with Moxxie in the next scene. The trip sequence ALSO inspires him to get closer to Stolas, indicating that the trip didn’t make him realize "I'm trapped and I need to get out of this" in the same way Fizz did. Rather, he realizes that he doesn't want Stolas to leave him like everyone else, and he wants to start feeling out what it would be like to deepen the connection between them. As I've mentioned in other posts, their kiss at the end of "truth seekers" represents a level of intimacy that we haven't seen before; it's teasing, affectionate, shows Blitz’s interest in making Stolas happy, and takes place in front of M&M, who have repeatedly teased him about their relationship before.
In summary, while the image of chains may have been invoked in all four of these relationships, they don’t necessarily mean the same thing across the board. Blitz and Stolas's relationship differs substantially from the others in its dynamic, and the context of their scene also sets it apart. It's important to look into the details and the nuance of their relationship to interpret what's going on under layers of trauma and unreliable narration.

I talk about this some more later but, examples: done with your plate? He’ll take it. He remembers you said you needed xyz, he got it for you. You said you wanted to ____ but you fell asleep, so he did it.
hope you get along with Gin because to continue a relationship with him past 2 minutes, you need to. He will never choose friends over family. I stand on that.

thats got me thinking actually . i havent rly had the energy nor the interest to update nuniq's doc to include interactions w/ the newest agents . including harbor and tjats literally her boyfriend lmao 😭😭😭😭 but anyway lemme make some poorly drawn depictions of what nuniq thinks of the newer agents (starting from clove to gekko)

honestly. nuniq wasnt too jazzed about the idea of hiring a kid (grown adult but theyre a kid to her), especially an untrained one . she understands they might have a link to omen going rogue but is still iffy about the whole situation
also oof. the whole immortality thing? yeah it must be a lot to bear for clove, theyre just very good at hiding it. but like with a lot of the young radiants, nuniq lets them know they can approach her about this stuff bc shes been through it too
she can admit she gets pissed at clove bc their immortality causes them to make more reckless decisions on the field . she wants to get it in their head that you still have to be smart about these things no matter how much power you have
but! she thinks clove is very nice. very silly very sweet guy who is an excellent storyteller. storytelling is very intertwined in both nuniq and clove's cultures so she loves listening to whatever clove can whip up
clove has probably dragged her into dnd at least once
she took a while to grasp it but thats ok shes trying her best
anyway yeah clove talks a lot and sometimes nuniq cant understand them so she has to ask them to slow down

valorant hired him because he was a kingdom killer and nuniq was ALL FOR THAT !!!!
she can tolerate the cocky smug little shit thing bc hes professional at least
hes not very hard to work with and is very cunning and calculating. nuniq likes that
iso has most definitely heard about nuniq before and was surprised to see her alive bc a lot of media made it seem she was dead to quell the uprisings against kingdom
nuniq is fascinated by iso's radiance but it definitely makes her think about how fast and how complex the concept of radiance itself is evolving . to think he could create his own pocket dimension with prismatic energy
besides that i feel like they mostly mind their own business
theres a mutual respect for eachothers skill and grit and they just *nods*

like the thing says. theres currently some weird tension between deadlock and nuniq rn (and its surprisingly not gay)
theyre both so cold its kinda hard for either of them to approach eachother
deadlock is. working on her relationship with gekkos creatures! which nuniq appreciates
but idk nuniq never forgets anything and its hard for her to get over the fact she almost killed wingman multiple times
+ proposed awful countermeasures to keep the radivores in check
yk that one headcanon someone made about gekkos friendliness and critters winning over a lot of the protocol?
and how they immediately had beef w deadlock because of it?
yeah thats the situation with nuniq
things have simmered down with the creature situation but nuniq mostly ignores deadlock outside of work
and frankly i think deadlock's scared of nuniq too so

last but not least GEKKO !!!!
nuniq loves gekko!!! hes so silly
hes fun and lighthearted while still being a good fighter
being around gekko makes nuniq feel. Friendlier idk how else to describe it
also his critters have 100% stolen her heart sometimes she asks to babysit wingman when gekkos busy
she has had to apologize for aput using dizzy as a chew toy though
gekko has dyed nuniqs hair temporarily; it was northern lights-colored streaks that looked really cool when braided, she kept it for about a month until it washed out
overall she thinks hes very sweet and she and reyna can get along over being protective of him
anyway yeah i think thats every agent so far after harbor! wow !!! i cant believe we've already made it this far to agent 25 .. and agent 8 still hasnt been revealed yet i love valorant lore (tired

How do you imagine gear's childhood ?
i flip flop around at when gears is born and that usually changes to suit my purposes. gears was born to O5-1 The Founder and Meihui Gu, a cantonese woman who worked a low level admin position for the Foundation, with the name charles ogden gu (in epitaph its mentioned that cog is actually his initials so i imagine his last name actually came from his mom and not « aaron seigel » as not only does that not work, but also his identity wouldve long been redacted anyway). until he was five meihui raised him entirely by herself, with founder not wanting to bother with a young child.
his mom was very loving, she was autistic too and understood the way that he was just kind of innately. however, at some point, founder wanted to raise gears as is customary (mentioned in the tale loosen up a little). living with his father was torturous, he was very strict, he didnt tolerate any extraneous interests or idiosyncrasies. in order to develop minor technokinesis he underwent things akin to torture. he was pretty terribly abused and forced to learn how to mask as best as he was able. a lot of natural coping mechanisms to deal with stress and express himself in a way that was natural to him (namely stimming) was taken away from him.
i think hes autistic and hes always had a flat affect and difficulties communicating and understanding others, but as a young child he expressed him through stimming and echolalia and such and got his emotions communicated that way. however, by the time hes an adult this has been thoroughly beat out of him.
in school both bc of the abuse and bc of the social disability he didnt rlly have friends, and was bullied a lot throughout his childhood.
aside from all this, i think hes always enjoyed bugs and slugs and such, his special interest, this has no evidence in canon i just like it. guy who rlly liked all the little critters and was fascinated by them, used to have a sketchbook hed poorly draw and label bugs in to look up later in encyclopedias.
he had and has poor motor skills and hand eye coordination and slow reaction speed. the times he has drawn regularly hes never been good at it but thats never been whats mattered.

Donbrothers doggy daycare AU
Hi I work at a doggy daycare and I got really bored the other day so. Here’s my very silly AU where all of them work at Donbura Doggy Daycare :)
The daycare is owned by Kaito but no one knows anything abt him (just like canon lmao)
He owns a black and white border collie named “Kaiser”
Haruka has been working at the daycare the longest (after Tarou who’s been there abt as long as Kaito has been running it)
Is always tired of Kaitos mysterious bullshit
Has a pitbull mix rescue dog named “Oni” who is like a little too insane but still comes to daycare because everyone loves him
Kijino is the oldest staff member (though they’re not sure how old Kaito is)
He’s always getting injured somehow
Will not shut up abt his wife who is a veterinarian
He has a very poorly trained and ill-behaved Shih Tzu named “Birdie” that he’s very protective over because his wife adopted her for him as a bday present
He also has his wife’s dog, a highly trained German shorthair hunting dog named “Crane”
Inuzaka always forgets to wash his scrubs and ends up wearing band tees most of the time instead of his uniform
Pretty much everyone knows he’s a criminal but they don’t care bc he’s rlly chill
He lives in a van with his gf (by choice bc he’s a van life weirdo)
He doesn’t talk all that much and tries to act edgy but he’s actually always listening to showtunes w his AirPods on
He has a Shiba Inu creatively named “inu” as well as his gfs dog, a white Pomeranian named “Lovely”
Saruhara is always wearing bucket hats :)
He gets yelled at a lot for talking instead of paying attention to do the dogs
He struggles to discipline the dogs and talks to them like they’re people lmao
He has a black Newfoundland named “gorilla” who is absolutely ginormous but thinks he’s a lapdog
No one is sure how bc they all get paid the same shitty wage but he’s consistently broke
He gives the rest of them life advice frequently :)
Jiro always wears colorful scrubs with a bunch of patterns on them and he cuts the sleeves off of them despite managements protests
Ripped as hell just like canon
He annoys his coworkers bc he’s a little TOO cheerful all the time at a job that is incredibly exhausting
He’s very passionate abt teamwork and team building
Has DID like in canon, host jiro likes to wear a hoodie and is usually postivelt triggered when he gets to interact with cats that may be boarding
He has two dogs named “tiger” and “dragon” who are both German shepherds
There will be more bc obviously I haven’t drawn mr wahaha himself, let alone the dogs or the nouto, but :) enjoy!

• Speaking of mornings, he can't stand them. Definitely has a dependency on coffee to keep him going, constantly begging for "five more minutes" of sleep (it's never just five minutes)

• Rainy days make him clingy. Well, clingier than usual. He loves to find whenever you are, wrap you and him up in a nice blanket and watch the rain fall. He hates thunder though (ironic)
• Doodles on himself. Usually things he needs to remember, but you can also catch poorly drawn animals and random symbols and shapes like stars and hearts all up and down his arms and the back of his hands. Please kiss them, he'll get so red.
• His hands are pretty rough, and unfortunately lotion doesn't really help. But they're rough in a sort of comforting way. They're big. And he loves to squish your face and add kisses to your forehead and your nose.
• He smells very dusty and his hands always smell like soap
• Don't let his "no thoughts, head empty" face fool you this man can get HORNY
• Likes to cop feels whenever he pleases. I feel like he's an ass man
• When it comes to the actual bedroom, McQueen loves to be on bottom and dommed. His favorite positions are any that involve you using him till your heart's content

Okay so I’ve never done this with the newsies fandom only because i haven’t really written much for it, but I’m a sucker for reconciliation. Just an absolute slut for Right Person Wrong Time, so I think that’s what I would make this hypothetical fic about.
omg omg omg and it would be one of those double timeline fics where it jumps between the past and present as a nod to the (for future’s sake)
my vibe for the Past Timeline is: Jack and Davey meet and hit it off VERY quickly because they are them and inexplicably drawn to each other. I’m thinking college freshman era, maybe they’re roommates?? Yeah, yeah they’re roommates let’s roll with it. Past Timeline would ideally jump around through their four years of college in order of relevance to the Current Timeline (we’ll get there, bear with me. There’s a bear with me. His name is Fred. He’s a menace) but begin with their last interaction/falling out and end with their first meeting— Think JICFEBDHGA, If the scenes were the alfabético and alphabetical order was chronological.

Skips out on graduation, and moves back to his hometown (Santa Fe)
This is the vibe for Present Timeline: it’s been several years, Davey hasn’t thought about jack in ages (that’s a lie, he was having his midnights moment like. Last night. CAUSE HE WAS SUNSHINE I WAS MIDNIGHT RAIN! ) but Jack’s in Santa Fe anyway and is married and has a kid according to Facebook a few years ago so rip Davey trying to find the colors jack painted his life :/ bc of That WS Just Friendship he hasn’t found anything CLOSE in ages. But surprise! He stops for covfefe and guess who the FUCK is the barista? In New York? Guess who the FUCK has been living there with his daughter (sorry I’m in a very Single Father!Jack mood) for SIX MONTHS and never said a WORD to Davey??
Anyway, this timeline would go in straight chronological order and follow them reconnecting, hashing out their old shit, deciding if they want to be together (they do) and what that looks like. So think 0123456789 numerical order being chronological.
So on the whole, the order would be something like:

Mhm, Kell and Kosika do seem to have some similarities about them. Especially if Holland or whoever is using his image is just using Kosika to reopen the walls. Also it's quite interesting to note that all her antari commands have come to her instinctively. However, whilst we don't have confirmation that this is strange or unusual - we do see both Kell and Lila using their powers for the first time (just about) and neither knew the commands - Maris told Kell and Lila had to ask!
Definitely seems to be a vitari-esque parallel between Holland and Kosika, very spooky. I'll be interested to see where it goes, given basically all W!London scenes are build up for later.
Balance is interesting, because I'm of the thought that reopening the gates will balance - because closed everything fell out of balance. I do think "and we had to give up magic power for the good of all" endings are a bit naff and considering R!London is very reliant, I don't think Schwab will lean that way. Would the antari population *balance* out?
Gods, I agree, Kell was probably way too scared after the ring business. It seemed like he was really hung up on it - but I can also see why the gesture was received poorly on Lila's end. I would like to see Lila cry more, let it out!! What comes after the confession though? Lila was clear she's not really a... family maker (nice parallel with Alucard who does want that for himself and Rhy). I thought Lila's response when asked by Nadiya was a bit interesting, it was a clear no, but Lila clearly felt a bit off about it, literally describing it as a "strange effect". I don't necessarily think children is the lathway this is going, but idk, it stuck out to me. Perhaps its like you say, that fear she has of facing her feelings.
Poor Tes, i'm looking forward to seeing her confidence grow! And for the eventual conflict with her sister!
That would make sense, or perhaps the space between worlds - and they can only escape once Kosika opens the gates.
I think Schwab is very drawn to male characters (and i think why some readers don't like Lila so much because she is this aggressive and mean character - each to their own i guess)

Yup, from what I've gathered, before she met "Holland" in ghostly form, he was with her but she could not see him, and he told her the commands and only later I think he tells her that's how she was able to know what to do, which is suspicious. Because like you said, Kell and Lila were told the Antari commands and there are still commands they might not know and can't use bc Antari magic requires specific formulae. Maybe "Holland" wanted to speed the process required for Antari to learn every spell they can use so the process to gather power would be quicker. What if he needed power to manifest himself to her as a ghost? Because it took a few years... and that power they are gathering may have other purposes which Kosika is unaware of. And yep, the WL scenes are for the future! Because no one expects WL to be so changed after seven years, and for Kosika to be so knowledgeable about Antari magic so young.

I also dislike the "they lose their powers at the end" trope. This series deals a lot with the theme of balance and one of the hardest things the characters have/had to do is/was to control themselves and their magic. If they lost everything, it would be quite annoying and would be too easy. The point that was made throughout the trilogy and now in Threads is balance, power, control, limits, etc. Victoria doesn't seem the kind of writer who would resort to that, at least in most of the series by her I've read, there was no one who ended without powers (on the other end, they had to deal with the consequences of having x power and things like that). So maybe, if Black London has something to do with Antari and why they exist -maybe there's a bit of Black London magic in every London and that's why Antari are so rare- it's possible there would be more of them? Even though that itself would be difficult to handle because people would abuse of their powers etc. so it's a never ending cycle lol

I wanted to see how the ring scene went because it must have been angsty (might write a fanfic about it perhaps, bc I like to write missing scenes XD). Confrontation can make or break a relationship, and I think that even if they don't see eye to eye on some matters, they still try to understand and be there for each other because they deeply care and love each other. I don't want to imagine what would happen if either of them died or would be severely injured.
I think I wrote in the previous ask that Lila only cries when there's death/near death experience with the people she loves. The finality is the trigger that opens the gates of her tears, because she's emotionally repressed. She had to reign in her emotions for years and it takes time to unlearn this. And we see that even if Kell shows her repeatedly how much he loves her, and she knows he won't reject her - if any, he would be ecstatic if she told him she loves him - she still finds it difficult to do so and to say those three words. I believe it's one of her core fears, along with well, losing Kell.
See, a reason I would love a baby storyline/talk is that perhaps this could help unlock her emotional side more. Lila might not be emotional like Kell (even though she's more irrational than him on the practical side), but she does have a heart and that heart beats so loud for those she cares about. This story would also tie with her trauma (i.e. losing her mother so young, having an abusive father so being scared to be like her father with her child, her fear of being tied down, etc.). I don't think a child is necessary in a couple but I feel like there is something in Kell and Lila's story (and their inner child trauma) that would tie so well with a baby storyline. I can't unsee it after this baby talk with Nadiya but of course it's just an headcanon for now. There are a lot of ways to explore this topic, and they may even discuss it among themselves. I would like to know where Kell stands on this. Maybe he would talk about it with either Rhy or Nadiya herself, because I bet she's interested about Kell's thoughts about this (even if it's none of her business lol).

Yeah, most of her novels have more male characters than female characters, and she does characterize them well (they also have great chemistry with each other and that's not an easy fit). In ADSOM Lila is the only mfc, and she doesn't fit the gender stereotypes, and sometimes she might be too extreme and do questionable things and people might not like that. Or maybe, people do not try to see past the exterior behavior she has, I have no idea. On the other hand, that's why I love Lila. She is morally grey, she is unpredictable, she is an hypocrite, she is a mystery, she is many things. I love all the layers she has and she is definitely my favorite character along with Kell. She was the first character I was drawn to when I read ADSOM years ago, and my love was reaffirmed and grew even stronger when I read Threads. 😂

I know you're the Kyle expert, but I knew a guy who thought Stan would be an incel. Thoughts?
Hmmm. Idk, I've seen that float around and I don't really get it?? Like, I can sorta get it more than when people seriously say it about Kyle. Stan definitely seems to fall into more... Viewing girls sort of in that perhaps lightly internally sexist way than Kyle seems to, of having some sort of unintentional separation between boys and girls that makes him kind of view girls as very different types of people friendwise, if that makes sense. Like, say he was dating a guy- I don't think much would change in terms of the guy being an extremely close friend who's been elevated up an extra level to romantic. But Wendy isn't really like that. She's not Stan's friend outside of their relationship.
And okay, that's not to say Kyle is a bastion of anti sexism himself, ESPECIALLY noting earlier seasons, but Kyle doesn't really seem to act the same way Stan does when interacting with girls?? His early season sexism felt more innocent and childish, something he's definitely grown out of now. It was less built on this deep internalized toxic masculinity and more like the "eww cooties" ideas that happen a lot with young kids. Obviously division based on traits like sex is not good under any circumstance, but it doesn't seem to have carried on much in his modern view of girls. Nowadays Kyle just seems to view girls far more equally even when divided from them, and cares more about listening or hearing out where they're coming from and understanding their frustration with sexism, for example. While he doesn't really have many close female friends (and really none of the boys actually do besides Stan), his behavior doesn't really shift at all to trying to be gentlemen-y or something around women, denoting a very equal level view of them.
But, in Stan's defense, we see him interacting with the girls way more than Kyle, and I think him having dated Wendy, interacting with her friends, etc etc over the series gives us way more to work with in that area than we get to with the more or less far in between hints we're given with Kyle. One thing that I think may impact this for me is also kind of that the few times we HAVE seen Kyle's attraction to girls play out, putting aside Leslie bc oh boy was Kyle blindly simping there, he doesn't seem to be as quick to focus on like... I guess vaguely sexual aspects like the other boys, which leads to him just seeming to objectify women less (Not to say that being sexually attracted to someone is inherently objectifying, but there is more of an overlap with people who are drawn by looks and engagement in objectifying behavior).
And then there's how Kyle has reacted to being rejected, and I know the big one is Super Hard PCness that everyone likes to point out as Kyle being a "nice guy", but in actuality, he was extremely graceful in how their relationship ended, moreso than he needed to be with the horrible things Heidi said to him, and only flipped out after being bullied and teased and harassed by virtually the whole school, Cartman and Heidi especially. It was definitely not anger purely because he didn't get a girl he liked, it was anger that someone he'd trusted and tried to help so swiftly turned on him and humiliated him for no reason at all, that once again he was being put down by Cartman, and that everyone else treated him poorly as well, Stan included. There's also Rebecca who Kyle just... Kinda let go. Like, we don't really see much of his reaction but there's nothing to tell us Kyle was angry their relationship was broken off, so I'm counting it at least a little. There's Nichole too, who once again we don't really straight up see Kyle's reaction to her breaking up with him. But we do see how he treats her, how much he tries to find stuff they have in common to talk about, how his only anger of their relationship not working is Cartman's blatant racism and lies about him purposely made to sabotage any chances he does get with this girl that he likes. It's not anger towards whatever choice Nichole makes here, it's anger about Cartman's needless and morally egregious interference. I know this is a low bar to pass in whether a character is decent to women, but Kyle just repeatedly not behaving badly over his breakups is a big tell to me. So often we see male characters act like assholes just because a girl doesn't like them or a girl broke up with them or something. Even with Stan, in fact, we've seen this play out. I mean. He's pretty okay too but we did see him tell Wendy she was a bitch for dating someone else. This is from early seasons, that I wouldn't solely use as evidence Stan is a crazy sexist even now, but it plays a part in this conversation on whether or not you can more accurately call Stan Marsh the incel-ish one of the two.
Okay, but like. Why am I even talking so much about Kyle here when you're asking about Stan? Well, I honestly think that the duality of them as characters reinforces the ideas of what the other is like to the audience, and this leads into a LOT of the extremes the fandom will push them into (the fem/masc debate, the nerd/jock debate, etc etc) and likewise it does so here. When we see Kyle being kinda more normal around girls, even though it's rare we see him like that at all, it makes Stan seem all the more awkward when in reality, he kind of isn't that bad at all?? He's pretty normal with girls for a boy his age, though he could be a bit less of a dick sometimes. I do think he sometimes has this huge focus on looks, and that can be... Not great, but it's not to a horrible evil incel-ish degree by any means, and I'd argue for his age he's a pretty good guy to, say, Wendy- Not that he can't improve a LOT but Idk, his shittiness comes off more as "dumb little boy is sometimes a jerk to his friends" to me than "secretly hates and disrespects women".
But y'know, at the end of the day, Kyle and Stan are more alike than people think about many of these things, this being one of them. Whether or not Kyle or Stan are better with how they act to women is hard to say. I can see why people would be able to twist Kyle into being incel-ish even if I don't really personally think it's based accurately on the information we've been given. I can see even moreso how someone might be able to with Stan, and while I do think there's at least a bit more of a leg to stand on him having some issues with internalized sexism, I don't think it's accurate with the information we've been given either. Neither of them are really incel-ish to me.
Honestly, if they were dealing with the issue of not being able to find a partner, they'd probably mostly internalize it into self blame and feel bad about themselves but not really broadly blame other people. Stan might slump into a depression or put his focus elsewhere, Kyle, if wanting a partner badly enough (I don't think it's ever been his first priority and I doubt it ever will be) would make efforts to fix the problem by figuring out what's putting people off about himself and try to figure out how he can fix it rather than lashing out. (Also I already lightly touched on why I don't think Kyle would redo his actions in The List right here over not being able to get a girlfriend lol)

The fact that Raven doesn’t insult Qrow is destroying me. She had to have chosen that; even the sweetest people pick up bad behaviours from their upbringing. Makes me think she did insult him once, as kids, frustrated or upset, only to see how badly it hurt him to hear his twin talk like the other bandits.
even the "two kids tricked into following someone" is just.... it would be so easy for raven to insult qrow considering how pro-ozpin he used to be and how their paths in life drastically diverged, but nope. doesn't happen. somewhere, at some point, a line was drawn and i do believe it happened early on in their lives, be it by default or after something like your example happened.
raven and qrow's relationship is one of my favorites, if not the favorite, in the show simply bc of how complex and multilayered it is. it's like they obviously care but they're also really bad at showing it (esp raven) and more so they're really really bad at talking about anything directly so it's all just a jumbled mess that ended poorly.
which is why i'm very interested and excited for their reunion, thanks to the development qrow has gone through—how he has learned to see things from other people's perspective, how he has learned to let go of his anger to focus on what's important, to talk it out instead of lashing out. it's not gonna be all sunshine and roses, definitely not, but by the end of it i think it's going to get close.

I wanna put in my 2cents as someone who read the books as a kid— and HoO as they were coming out, if that’s okay? I don’t think I’ll ever see what some mean by how “flat” they (hoo) were, but I know that’s the nostalgia glasses and I’ve made peace with that. I adored every member of the ArgoII, even though looking back I can see that a lot of it was forced diversity (as opposed to natural diversity, which I originally read it as).
Actually I forget my original point in sending this ask but I want to say that you’re an author I respect a lot (because you’re pretty high up on the critical thinking scale) and I’m pleased to have you as a pjo fan, bc your Spider-Man takes are always spot on. Thanks for being willing to share your work with us.
Also what are your thoughts on Nico? I’ve never been terribly attached to him but he’s apparently super popular. Not sure why.
I haven’t really waded into the fandom— and from what little I’ve seen, I have zero plans to lmao— but even while reading it, I could just FEEL the kind of racist nonsense that happened because of these poorly drawn, mismanaged characters. I have such a bone to pick with Rick Riordan who wrote these characters in the most odd way possible, setting them up to fail and lacking a care and attention that he gave to the (presumed white) original trio. Hazel, Piper, Leo, Frank,,, they’re all interesting in THEORY but in execution it’s so lacking it’s offensive to me lmao. I just know fandom was rancid with the discourse on all fronts.
Also 🥹 having critical thought in spider-man is high praise lmao it’s also a very…. Tetchy fandom.
Nico sure is a character! I can 1000% see and understand why Fandom would be obsessed with him and it doesn’t escape me that Mr. Riordan did the most work with him character wise as well. To me, he’s a tragic character that I like well enough but I’m sure fandom— like Bucky Barnes before him— is horrendously insufferable about.

it’s so fucking funny to me that in true dumb rich teenager fashion, it occurs to Neungdiao to blame both Palm and Chanon for enforcing the line between boss and employee before, or rather than, blaming the person who actually created the line: his mother.
like, my dude, what exactly do you think will happen if your mother catches you both eating at the same table? taking the same car to school? does it not occur to you that she invited him into your home and yet never elaborated that he could also do these things? does that not seem strange to you?
who do you think is paying Chanon’s salary? do you think he would do anything different w/o explicit permission from her first? and do you think he would EVER be able to ask her to give the same privileges that she gives her son to his own?
speaking of employment, he gets angry that the cook makes too many dishes for him and they go to waste. WHO DO YOU THINK ASKED HER TO DO THAT? DO YOU THINK SHE JUST MAKES THAT MUCH FOOD BC SHE CAN? its so funny that he just accepts this as a fact of life rather than an instruction from a very obvious source whom he can question.
not to mention how he doesn’t get that its dangerous for Palm if Tanya thinks that Neungdiao is elevating Palm this way bc she would immediately think that Palm is asking for more and taking advantage of him, forgetting his place.
it wouldn’t surprise me if this is all deliberate on Tanya’s part. leave things ambiguous so that she continues to look favourable in Neungdiao’s eyes but as soon as Chanon or Palm cross the poorly drawn line, she can swoop in and reprimand them while he’s not around.

and so i call out for my mom lmfaoooo bc obviously someone was at the basement door and i assumed it was my mom bc my mom is also a night owl like me! but then i hear the footsteps and its not my mom its my dad!

and so he gets to the bottom of the stairs and i point at the creepy cricket and im like "i need that to go away"
and he was like "ok" and chased it around and then stomped on it

Honestly one of my least favorite things about TMA is the pacing. The individual statements are excellent but you can't build a meta story without considering the broader pacing.
Honestly, i don't see the point in making the Stranger and the Dark separate entities when the Dark gets destroyed so quickly in a way that is so useless to the story. I get that they needed to convey that stopping the rituals was meaningless and giving Jon another enemy (that he was perfectly designed to fight because of those eye powers Jonah wanted him to grow) was a way to do that, but surely there was a *better* one? It was one or two episodes for practically nothing...
Also did you find that TMA got more stressful over time with little to no relief? I don't feel the same mounting dread listening to Alice Isn't Dead or Malevolent, and the horror in those isn't exactly light. There are just... breather moments. I feel like those are important. You can't keep raising the stakes and reducing the hope forever.
(While I'm on the topic of hope, I didn't like having all the mystery surrounding the entities in season 3 taken away and having any hope for a happy ending taken away all at once. Pacing wise, halfway through season 3/5 is way too early to let that bomb drop)

i agree with you 100% on pacing, the pacing of the entire series is a mess, but i disagree about why the pacing is bad for the reveal bc i actually think it came way too late
the reveal of the entities imo was too slow, we don't get an explanation for the mechanic of the whole world of magverse until mag 111, which is halfway through s3, and there are only 5 seasons
the glacial pace of this reveal is way less noticeable on re-listens, because if you know about the entities of fear from the very beginning, a lot more of the series makes a lot more sense
jonny talks in q+as about balancing the horror and the mystery and while i feel like the mystery was well structured, it was paced badly
and even once the entity reveal happens (in one of the best episodes ofc) the unknowing crap drags oooooooon and on and on and on and on for fucking ever
i'm sure if you like the stranger, it's nice to have two full seasons dedicated to it, but i personally find it to be a very tedious and poorly executed entity so the amount of time the series spends on its ritual and its monsters was a bummer to me
that's not to say that those two full seasons are a wash!!! that's untrue by any stretch, some of the series' best episodes are in s2 and my favorite season over all is s3
but the draaaaag of getting to the unknowing feels almost like living it in real time, and i personally don't care for the finale at all (it's a technical marvel but an audio nightmare, besides not enjoying the topsy turvy circus theme i also can't stand the cacophony of the ritual (which i do understand is the whole point but that doesn't change the fact that i find it painful to listen to))
and yes, absolutely, preventing the dark ritual was HORRIBLY rushed, especially since when basira and jon actually get to ny-ålesund, the ritual was prevented years ago... one of the MANY instances in tma where we get a lot of drawn out build up for sort of a wet fart reveal
it was introduced early on with elias giving basira bad intel in order to get her out of the institute while jon gets marked by the buried, but the audience doesn't know that's connected to the dark ritual until like... six? i think six episodes? later? and then wham bam the whole dark business is over before it even starts
which is a bummer to me because it gives us so little time with jon and basira traveling :( and also the dark is a very mid fear for me BUT whatever tf manuela and maxwell had going on was weeeeeeeeeeeeird (horny tone indicator) and i want so badly for them to be actual fully realized characters bc avatar/acolyte with a ridiculous age gap is my fucking JAM and jonny does it so often...
but i disagree about the stranger and the dark not being meaningfully different entities? maybe i'm misunderstanding you, but while i think the stranger is a thematic mess, the dark is a very concrete tightly executed entity
i love the dark's connection to brackish water as well, i think that's very interesting and very visually engaging
i think the cult aspects of the people's church were introduced late and not very effectively... i mean they were introduced in s2 with basira's statement but we didn't really get into it from a devotee pov until manuela. but also jonny's religious horror flops for me every time :/ the father burroughs arc, the dark, most of the lightless flame, etc just feels flat to me... but chalk that one up to my jewish upbringing maybe?? i love the worship aspect of the entities so it's not like i dislike how jonny writes the horror of devotion, it's just when he talks about organized religion that i sort of tune out
i personally don't find tma stressful! i didn't on my first listen and i haven't found it to be so since. i find a lot of tma disappointing because of the way it builds and builds and builds and then.... flops. but not stressful!
also this is down to personal preference but my favorite type of horror is relentlessly bleak. i love nihilistic hopeless horror! and i think tma really really delivers bleak. the environment, the futile struggle of humanity against the fears, the total lack of interpersonal connection, i love all of it. i think if jonny had stuck to his guns and done a real horror tragedy and committed to the incredible oppressive sense of hopelessness he had built for 4 seasons, jm wouldn't have happened and s5 could have been good (altho i have to say that on principle i find goofy nightmare dnd hike through themed escape rooms to be a dogshit concept for a season, especially as a finale for a series that was so grounded in reality? that had such a solid connection to the bleakness of real life!! of shit jobs and bad friendships and depressive spirals etc. why did we end the world and end up in rick and mortyverse. why would we do that...)
but yeah definitely i can see why the relentless downward trajectory of tma might not appeal to everyone, but it's personally one of my favorite aspects of it
