My latest in trawling thru semi-random comparative etymological dictionaries: Hudson (1989) on Highland East Cushitic. He gets together 767 reconstructions, a decent amount on a group of relatively little-studied languages. A nice chunk of vocabulary can be reconstructed especially for the major crop of the area, the enset tree (*weesa), its parts (e.g. *hoga 'leaf', *kʼaantʼe 'fibre', *kʼalima 'seed pod', *mareero 'pith', *waasa 'enset food') and tools for processing it (*meeta 'scraping board', *sissa 'bamboo scraper).
There surely has to be material among the reconstructions though that represent newer spread, most clearly the names of a few post-Columbian-exchange foodstuffs: *bakʼollo 'maize', *kʼaaria 'green chili' — same terms also e.g. in Amharic: bäqollo, qariya (Hudson kindly provides Amharic and Oromo equivalents copiously). (Note btw a vowel nativization rule appearing in these: Amharic a → HEC aa, but ä /ɐ/ → HEC a [a~ɐ~ə], as if undoing the common Ethiosemitic shift *aa *a > a ä.) Slightly suspicious are also a few names of trade items and cultural vocabulary / Wanderwörter like *gaanjibelo 'ginger', *loome 'lemon' (at least the latter could be again plausibly fairly recent loans from Amharic lome) but these could well have reached southern Ethiopia even already in antiquity.
In terms of root structure, interesting are two monoconsonantal roots: *r- 'thing, thingy, thingamajig' (segmentable from a diminutive *r-iččo and from Sidamo ra) and *y- 'to say'. Otherwise verb roots are the usual Cushitic *CV(C)C-, clusters limited to geminates and sonorant + obstruent; with several derivative extensions such as *-is- reflexive, *-aɗ- causative. *ɗ actually occurs almost solely in the last, I would suspect it's from one of the well-attested dental stops *t / *d / *tʼ with post-tonic lenition. Long vowels also seem to occur fairly freely in the root syllable with even several "superheavy" roots like *aanš- 'to wash', *feenkʼ- 'to shell legumes', *iibb- 'to be hot', *maass-aɗ- 'to bless', *uuntʼ- 'to beg'; *boowwa 'valley', *čʼeemma 'laziness', *doobbe 'nettle', *leemma 'bamboo', *mooyyee 'mortar'… A ban on CCC consonant clusters does seem to hold however, apparently demonstrated by *moočča ~ *mooyča 'prey animal', which probably comes from an earlier *moo- + the deminutive suffix *-iččV; resulting **mooyčča would have to be shortened in some way, either by degemination or by dropping *-y-.
In V2 and later positions there seems to be morphological conditioning of vowel length, cf. e.g. *arraab- 'to lick' : *arrab-o 'tongue'; *indidd- 'to shed tears' : *indiidd-o 'tear' (and not **arraabo, **indiddo). And as in these examples, also many basic nouns appear to be simple "thematizations" of verbs, similarly e.g. *buur- 'to anoint, smear', *buur-o 'butter'; *fool- 'to breathe', *fool-e 'breath'; *kʼiid- 'to cool', *kʼiid-a 'cold (of weather)'; *reh- 'to die', *reh-o 'death'. I don't actually see a ton of logic to what the "nominalizing vowel" ends up being though and maybe it's sometimes an original part of the stem, not a suffix. Quite a lot of unanalyzable nouns on the other hand are actually fairly long, e.g. *finitʼara 'splinter', *hurbaata 'dinner', *kʼorranda 'crow', *kʼurtʼumʔe 'fish', *tʼulunka '(finger)nail'.
Further phonologically interesting features include apparently a triple contrast between *Rˀ (glottalized resonants) and both *Rʔ and *ʔR clusters [edit: no, it's just very inconsistent transcription]; also ejective *pʼ is established even though plain *p is not (that has presumably become *f).
Lastly here's a some etyma I've found casually amusing:
*bob- 'to smell bad': take note, any Roberts planning on travelling to southern Ethiopia
*buna 'coffee': yes yes, this is the part of the world where you cannot assume 'coffee' will look anything like kafe
*mana 'man': second-best probably-coincidence in the data
*raar- 'to shout, scream' 🦖 [and looks like maybe a variant of *aar- 'to be angry?]
*sano 'nose': "clearly must be" cognate with PIE *nas- with metathesis :^>
*ufuuf- 'to blow on fire', oh yeah I've needed that verb sometimes
*waʔa 'water': Cushitic With British Characteristics

Hogfather footnotes poll, Part 2!
Since it's Hogswatch season, I'm back with another footnote poll! Hogfather has a ton of footnotes, so this has to be split into 2 parts :P Part 1 linked here!
Full text of each footnote plus a little context for each is below the readmore so this post isn't a mile long. Enjoy!
There had been people dressed up as pixies, and a picket outside the shop by the Campaign for Equal Heights.* *The CEH was always ready to fight for the rights of the differently tall, and was not put off by the fact that most pixies and gnomes weren’t the least interested in dressing up in little pointy hats with bells on when there were other far more interesting things to do. All that tinklywee stuff was for the old folks back home in the forest—when a tiny man hit Ankh-Morpork he preferred to get drunk, kick some serious ankle and search for tiny women. In fact the CEH now had to spend so much time explaining to people that they hadn’t got enough rights that they barely had any time left to fight for them.
Wizards didn’t go to bed early in any case,* *Often they lived to a time scale to suit themselves. Many of the senior ones, of course, lived entirely in the past, but several were like the Professor of Anthropics, who had invented an entire temporal system based on the belief that all the other ones were a mere illusion. Many people are aware of the Weak and Strong Anthropic Principles. The Weak One says, basically, that it was jolly amazing of the universe to be constructed in such a way that humans could evolve to a point where they make a living in, for example, universities, while the Strong One says that, on the contrary, the whole point of the universe was that humans should not only work in universities but also write for huge sums books with words like “Cosmic” and “Chaos” in the titles. †The UU Professor of Anthropics had developed the Special and Inevitable Anthropic Principle, which was that the entire reason for the existence of the universe was the eventual evolution of the UU Professor of Anthropics. But this was only a formal statement of the theory which absolutely everyone, with only some minor details of a “Fill in name here” nature, secretly believes to be true. †And they are correct. The universe clearly operates for the benefit of humanity. This can be readily seen from the convenient way the sun comes up in the morning, when people are ready to start the day.
[...] although no one now knows why, or why an extant bequest pays for one small currant bun and one copper penny to be places on a high stone shield on one wall every second Wednesday.* * The ceremony still carries on, of course. If you left off traditions because you didn’t know why they started you’d be no better than a foreigner.
What Ponder was worried about was the fear that he was simply engaged in a cargo cult. He’d read about them. Ignorant* and credulous† people, whose island might once have been visited by some itinerant merchant vessel that traded pearls and coconuts for such fruits of civilization as glass beads, mirrors, exes, and sexual diseases, would later make big model ships out of bamboo in the hope of once again attracting this magical cargo. *Ignorant: a state of not knowing what a pronoun is, or how to find the square root of 27.4, and merely knowing childish and useless things like which of the seventy almost identical-looking species of the purple sea snake are the deadly ones, how to treat the poisonous pith of the Sagosago tree to make a nourishing gruel, how to foretell the weather by the movements of the tree-climbing Burglar Crab, how to navigate across a thousand miles of featureless ocean by means of a piece of string and a small clay model of your grandfather, how to get essential vitamins from the liver of the ferocious Ice Bear, and other such trivial matters. It’s a strange thing that when everyone becomes educated, everyone knows about the pronoun but no one knows about the Sago-sago. †Credulous: having views about the world, the universe and humanity’s place in it that are shared only by very unsophisticated people and the most intelligent and advanced mathematicians and physicists.
[...] and there’s this museum I read about where they found a pocket calculator under the altar of this ancient temple, you know what I’m saying? but the government hushed it up…* *It’s amazing how good governments are, given their track record in almost every other field, at hushing up things like alien encounters. One reason may be that the aliens themselves are too embarrassed to talk about it. It’s not known why most of the space-going races of the universe want to undertake rummaging in Earthling underwear as a prelude to formal contact. But representatives of several hundred races have taken to hanging out, unsuspected by one another, in rural corners of the planet and, as a result of this, keep on abducting other would-be abductees. Some have been in fact abducted while waiting to carry out an abduction on a couple of other aliens trying to abduct the aliens who were, as a result of misunderstood instructions, trying to form cattle into circles and mutilate crops. The planet Earth is now banned to all alien races until they can compare notes and find out how many, if any, real humans they have actually got. It is gloomily suspected that there is only one—who is big, hairy and has very large feet. The truth may be out there, but lies are inside your head.
The singers were halfway down Park Lane now, and halfway through “The Red Rosy Hen” in marvelous harmony.* *“The red rosy hen greets the dawn of the day.” In fact the hen is not the bird traditionally associated with heralding a new sunrise, but Mrs. Huggs, while collecting many old folk songs for posterity, has taken care to rewrite them where necessary to avoid, as she put it, “offending those of a refined disposition with unwarranted coarseness.” Much to her surprise, people often couldn’t spot the unwarranted coarseness until it had been pointed out to them. Sometimes a chicken is nothing but a bird.
I’m waiting for the Hogfather, thought Ponder Stibbons. I’m in the dark waiting for the Hogfather. Me. A believer in Natural Philosophy. I can find the square root of 27.4 in my head.* *He’d have to admit that the answer would be “five and a bit,” but at least he could come up with it.
He’d always promised their mother that he’d look after Banjo,* *It had been Ma Lilywhite’s dying wish, although she hadn’t known it at the time. Her last words to her son were “You try and get to the horses, I’ll try to hold ‘em off on the stairs, and if anything happens to me, take care of the dummy!”
Wizards know when they are going to die.* *They generally know in time to have their best robe cleaned, do some serious damage to the wine cellar and have a really good last mea. It’s a nicer version of Death Row, with the bonus of no lawyers.
The Senior Wrangler hummed cheerfully to himself as he ran a comb through his beard for the second time and liberally sprinkled it with what would turn out to be a preparation of weasel extract for demon removal rather than, as he had assumed, a pleasant masculine scent.* *It was, in fact, a pleasant masculine scent. But only to female weasels.
“A whole sheep!”* *Which had died in its sleep. Of natural causes. At a great age. After a long and happy life, insofar as sheep can be happy. And would probably be quite pleased to know that it could help somebody as it passed away.
The man went to shut the door but Arnold Sideways was ready for him and had wedged his boot in the crack.* *Arnold had no legs but, since there were many occasions when a boot was handy on the streets, Coffin Henry had affixed one to the end of a pole for him. He was deadly with it, and any muggers hard-pressed enough to try to rob the beggars often found themselves kicked on the top of the head by a man three feet high.

Green Bamboo: Strength in Flexibility
Tumblr media
The individuals who have watched the film "Crouching Tiger, Stowed away Winged serpent" would be know all about the symbolism of bamboo: adaptable yet firm, sensitive yet solid. These one of a kind characteristics make the bamboo fit cozily into old Chinese way of thinking and invest the medical advantages of the bamboo with a quality of insight and effortlessness.
History
In China, the profoundly respected bamboo reflects divine solidarity in old workmanship, for example, ethereal paintings of hazy mountains with bamboo leaves, fragile bamboo weavings and bamboo crates.
The strength of bamboo is clear when the anger of the nuclear bomb released at Hiroshima and Nagasaki during The Second Great War just harmed bamboo marginally. It was likewise perhaps the earliest plant to return after the dangerous conflict, subsequently occupying an extraordinary spot in the hearts of the Japanese. Guests to Japan will be enchanted by the resonant sound of nature when a breeze stirs through bamboo-made wind rings.
In Hawaii, where bamboo is known as "ohe", bamboo makes have been raised to a craftsmanship, with intricate plans of fragile tapa stamps cut from split bamboo.
Before the invention of wheels, bamboo gave heavy shafts to carrying crates woven from bamboo filaments, consequently revealing its wide range of purposes.
Nature
Bamboo has solid abilities to survive. Like grass, it develops quickly and can proliferate without help from anyone else. Like wood, it is solid and can be viewed as all through the world. In spite of the fact that bamboo just requirements minimal water to sustain itself, just 20 inches of rainfall for certain species, most enormous bamboos develop speedier when presented to full daylight. See it here health benefits of bamboo extract
Growing bountifully in destitution ridden and asset alarm regions, bamboo resembles a gift to mankind, giving the greater part of itself during its short life expectancy of a couple of years.
The level of bamboo shifts from 30cm bantam plants to hovering lumber bamboos of over 40m.
Bamboos are arranged according to the kind of roots. Sprinters, which have a place mainly with tropical bamboos, spread richly while clumpers, which have a place with mild bamboos, extend gradually from the original planting. There are additionally underground roots that combine the two sorts.
Bamboo leaves arrive in an enormous assortment. There are delicate smooth leaves, leaves with saw-toothed edges and leaves with tiny wisps of hair-like enhancements around the foundations of the stems and culm (stem) sheaths.
Wellbeing Notes
Bamboo, a crucial component in Conventional Chinese Medicine, has a personality that reaches from gentle to cooling. So albeit explicit medical advantages vary according to the different parts and kinds of the bamboo, by and large, bamboo can help detoxify, repulse insects, eliminate heatiness, clear mucus, check vomiting, reestablish essentialness and extinguish thirst. Little miracle then that the bamboo is the panda's #1. Truth be told, with a lot of rough protein, bamboo is likewise utilized regularly as creature feed.
Bel'Air's green bamboo rejuvenating oil is the aftereffect of thorough exploration. From the joints of bamboo stems, a useful pith known as bamboo sil is extricated. It contains plentiful measures of silice, which is a rich store of calcium. After fragrant healing with green bamboo medicinal ointment, calcium would be recharged and bones would be strengthened. This innovative medicinal oil can likewise ease advanced age issues like spinal pain and ailment, as well as upgrade calcium contents in youngsters and teens, consequently boosting their development.

Bridal Veil Fungus (Phallus indusiatus) ●▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬๑۩۞۩๑.▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬●
Phallus indusiatus, commonly called the bamboo mushrooms, bamboo pith, long net stinkhorn, crinoline stinkhorn or veiled lady, is a fungus in the family Phallaceae, or stinkhorns. It has a cosmopolitan distribution in tropical areas, and is found in southern Asia, Africa, the Americas, and Australia, where it grows in woodlands and gardens in rich soil and well-rotted woody material. The fruit body of the fungus is characterised by a conical to bell-shaped cap on a stalk and a delicate lacy "skirt", or indusium, that hangs from beneath the cap and reaches nearly to the ground. First described scientifically in 1798 by French botanist Étienne Pierre Ventenat, the species has often been referred to a separate genus Dictyophora along with other Phallus species featuring an indusium. P. indusiatus can be distinguished from other similar species by differences in distribution, size, color, and indusium length.
Mature fruit bodies are up to 25 cm (10 in) tall with a conical to bell-shaped cap that is 1.5–4 cm (0.6–1.6 in) wide. The cap is covered with a greenish-brown spore-containing slime, which attracts flies and other insects that eat the spores and disperse them. An edible mushroom featured as an ingredient in Chinese haute cuisine, it is used in stir-fries and chicken soups. The mushroom, grown commercially and commonly sold in Asian markets, is rich in protein, carbohydrates, and dietary fiber. The mushroom also contains various bioactive compounds, and has antioxidant and antimicrobial properties. Phallus indusiatus has a recorded history of use in Chinese medicine extending back to the 7th century AD, and features in Nigerian folklore.

Top places to visit in Lansdowne
Tumblr media
Lansdowne was originally named as Kaladanda whose literal meaning is Kala (Black) and danda (hills) which is located in the Garhwal district of Uttarakhand. Lansdowne took place on the name of the Viceroy of India and it is a cantonment town covered with pine and Oak trees forests which make this place an ideal one to visit with your friends and family. Lansdowne is that hill station that is not being too crowded and it is well connected by the road with major other areas. The infrastructure of many places of the Lansdowne takes place at the time of Pre-Independence when India was under control of the Britishers. It is a hill station that is so opt to visit in summers having good weather and forests which makes this place climate cold.
The main tourist places in Lansdowne are as follows:
1. Bhulla Lake
2. Kalagarh Tiger reserve
3. Tip N top point
4. Bhim Pakora
5. Tarkeshwar Mahadev temple
Some of the finest places to visit in Lansdowne. Let's get to know each of them!
1. Bhulla Lake
Bhulla lake is a wonderful place to visit in Lansdowne. It is built by the Indian army and named after the younger brother as Bhulla is a Garhwali word which means younger brother so this is a tribute to the Young Soldiers of the Garhwal Rifles. This lake is an artificial lake, located around 2 km away from the main market and is a perfect place to come with family and friends for a picnic. This lake has a bridge over the lake which offers the ecstatic view of the whole place. There is a café, a general shop and fountains in Bhulla lake. Boating can also be done here in boats which are in duck shape, loved by childrens. This lake is also called Bhulla taal.

Kalagarh Tiger reserve is a part of the famous National Park i.e., Jim Corbett National Park. This is the northern part of the national park which was later named as Kalagarh Tiger reserve which is one of the best places to visit in Lansdowne. This place as suggested by the name has a large number of tigers along with more cat family animals. It consists of 580 species of birds, 50 species of mammals and 25 species of reptiles in the whole national park. The top rock can be easily shaken by a little finger but it can't fall off even if you put force with both of your hands. This place according to the Mythology was created by one of the Pandavas named Bhim. He was so strong among all the brothers that he put two rocks on one another in such a way that they can’t fall off. This place is so famous for this fact and people came here to check whether it’s true or not which makes this place a popular one to visit in Lansdowne.
5. Tarkeshwar Mahadev temple
Tarkeshwar Mahadev temple is considered as the Siddha Piths which is dedicated to Lord Shiva. This temple is widely famous and people came here because they believed it to be a holy place. Once a Tarkasur meditated at this place in the memory of Lord Shiva for a blessing. Lord Shiva pleased by his efforts and gave him the blessing of Immortality but expecting the scenario that His son can kill him and then he misuses this power and killed many sages. God went to Lord Shiva for help, at that time Lord Shiva married Goddess Parvati and Kartikeya born which later on Killed Tarkasur. But at the time of death, he pleaded for pardon to Lord Shiva, so Lord Shiva combined his name with this temple. People believed in this fact and considered this place a pious one which makes this place a main attraction of Lansdowne.

Finally did some art of an adoptable I got a while ago! She’s originally designed by @/garutanachi (on Instagram), and it was fun to do with the detailing (had to fudge the sleeves a little but I think it turned out alright)

(光与夜之恋 Light and Night) Evan’s 6✩ Inspiration: Umbrae Secrets [繁荫秘语] Date Translation (END 2 + 3 + 4: Call Out)
“This is such a remote area. Were I to do anything, it would be nothing more than a piece of cake.”
*Light and Night Master-list | Evan’s Personal Masterlist *Spoiler free: Translations will remain under cut *Join the Light & Night Discord (^▽^)~ ♪ *This 6✩ Inspiration has 8 Endings!! *Reblogs and likes appreciated! *Evan’s tag will be #For Night, For Revolution *T/N: This card takes me out so quick I needed time to recover. Hunter and prey... MC triggered the Hunter...
After pondering for a while, I finally decided to…
✥ Choice: Call Out [呼唤] ⊹Speak⊹
Tumblr media
⊹ Ask Evan for his opinion ⊹
Tumblr media
MC: Any bright ideas, Evan?
Evan: I'm thinking that maybe we can find a place to set up camp early…
Evan: Because you seem very eager to camp out.
MC: You got me. Let's go with that then!
❖☆———————————★❖
Tumblr media
Evan was very experienced when it came to selecting a suitable campsite.
Eventually, we managed to find a fitting flat and cosy patch of grass that was both leeward and shaded, with a source of water nearby.
By the time we finished setting up the tent, the sky had already gradually darkened. The temperature of the forest quietly dropped as the occluding darkness surrounded us. But I had Evan with me, so there was no need to fear.
We lit the camp stove and roasted some food. The flickering firelight became the most dazzling thing in the forest, casting dancing shadows and lights all around. There was a certain romance to it.
For a moment, all I could hear was the crackling of fire and the soft chips and buzz of the insects nearby. It felt as if even time had come to a standstill.
❖☆———————————★❖
Tumblr media
I inadvertently raised my head. The night sky above was adorned with stars, like fine scattered gemstones sewn onto an expanse of black velvet. Each and every one of them was equally lustrous, converging into a glimmering band of light and extending into the distance.
I watched the sky in a trance while lying on the grass. Evan sat quietly beside me
After a while, I tugged on his sleeve.
❖☆———————————★❖
Tumblr media
MC: Look, the light of the stars only becomes much more apparent once all the lights have been extinguished.
MC: The grass smells good too, so why don’t you try lying down too?
He looked down at me with a smile and contemplated the idea. He finally agreed after a moment of hesitation.
Evan: Alright.
❖☆———————————★❖
He moved closer and laid down beside me. Now, another rhythm sounded in my ears: his gentle and steady breathing.
Evan: It is very beautiful.
MC: I feel like it's been a long time since I last saw a starry sky like this.
MC: No wonder those philosophers always liked looking up at the stars when they think. Now I understand why they would.
MC: The sight of an area this vast can make people forget all trivialities and let their thoughts wander further to the past and even the future.
Evan: So where has your mind flown off to now?
MC: Me? I’m thinking that since the forest is so beautiful, maybe I’ll go live in the forest next time, aha.
Then, a curious thought popped into my head.
MC: Right, Evan. Have you ever thought about where you’d like to live after having fulfilled all your goals?
❖☆———————————★❖
Tumblr media
I waited for a long time, but Evan never replied.
Did he fall asleep?
I decided to gently call out to him…
⊹ ˚✩ ━━━━━━━━━━━ ∘◦ ✥ ◦∘ ━━━━━━━━━━━ ✩˚ ⊹
⊹ E2: If you fail to call him ⊹
I’d called out to him multiple times in a row before he finally turned his head, looking slightly out of it.
Tumblr media
Evan: Are you calling me? Sorry, I spaced out.
MC: Oh, no worries.
Evan smiled at me but didn’t say anything more.
Some people are made of mysteries. Perhaps this was simply a question he didn’t wish to answer now.
⊹ ˚✩ ━━━━━━━━━━━ ∘◦ ✥ ◦∘ ━━━━━━━━━━━ ✩˚ ⊹
⊹ E3: If you call him EVAN (陆沉) ⊹
Tumblr media
Evan instantly snapped back to attention upon hearing me call out to him. He smiled apologetically.
Evan: Sorry. Your question's a little hard to answer. I lost track of myself thinking it through.
MC: Huh? Have you never imagined such things?
Evan: Hmm. That might be because the matters I always have on hand are more important, so I tend to focus all my attention on them.
MC: Right… I've been there and done that too.
MC: Back when I was schooling, I often found studying to be very dry and stressful.
MC: But, whenever I found myself unable to bear it anymore, I would fantasize about Summer Vacation and draw new motivation from it.
MC: Whenever I felt down or life got hard, I’d always dream about how much better life would be after I achieved my goals.
MC: Maybe you could think about it this way too?
Evan: After fulfilling my goal?
Evan: After that… I think nothing matters after that anymore.
His last sentence was so soft that it sounded as if he was mumbling to himself, and I wasn’t too sure if I’d actually heard him.
Tumblr media
I turned to him in question, but he never answered, keeping so silent that it was almost as if he was one with the very ground.
I was starting to feel a little inexplicably worried when he then opened his mouth, as if the prior silence had never existed.
Evan: How about you tell me about it first? What’s your ideal life like? Maybe it’ll nudge me in the right direction.
MC: Hmm… Sometimes, I like lively Cities.
MC: But other times, I like someplace quiet; somewhere with mountains and water… I think that’s a pretty good place to live too...
MC: But there's no wifi there and I can’t eat my favourite ice cream… It’s a real pickle.
Evan: Perhaps what you like is change itself.
MC: Yeah… But some things will never change!
MC: Like, how I don't want to be too far from everyone.
MC: Without the people to share interesting things and breathtaking sceneries with, it'll certainly take the fun out of things.
His low chuckle sounded near my ear, close at hand.
Evan: I now know where I'd like to live next time.
MC: Where?
Tumblr media
Evan: Somewhere not too far away from you. Would you welcome that?
MC: Of course I do. But, aren't you already here by me?
He turned his head over, watching me with a serious look as the light flickered at the bottom of his eyes.
My arm moved, inadvertently brushing against his cool skin, but also not shying away from it. He flipped his palm and encased my fingers within them.
Evan: You are correct.
Evan: To me, right now, life is perfectly fine as it is.
⊹ ˚✩ ━━━━━━━━━━━ ∘◦ ✥ ◦∘ ━━━━━━━━━━━ ✩˚ ⊹
⊹ E4: If you call him HUBBY (老公) ⊹
Tumblr media
Evan shot me a slightly surprised look. Suddenly, the realization of what I'd just done washed over me.
Then, he shifted closer to me; so close that I didn't even dare turn my head.
Evan: Are you trying to hint at something by suddenly addressing me in this manner?
Evan: This is such a remote area. Were I to do anything, it would be nothing more than a piece of cake.
I inwardly froze. Evan was different from usual today… His warm breath brushed past my ear, inciting a continuous yet faint ticklish sensation.
MC: Hahaha… You wouldn't...
Evan: And why are you so sure that I wouldn't?
MC: You're always mindful and courteous. You aren't… that sort of person.
Tumblr media
Evan: "That sort of person"? What sort of person?
He lifted his head in interest, looking down at me in a condescending manner. I was so embarrassed that I couldn't even get a sentence out right as the temperature of my cheeks rapidly shot up.
MC: That… That sort… Evan, stop making fun of me like that…
He narrowed his eyes into a smile, suddenly flipping himself over and balancing himself above me!
Rationally speaking, I knew deep down just what sort of person he was, but my body still ran on instinct: It sensed danger.
His broad form, usually reassuring, looked immeasurably intimidating from this angle. I couldn't help but bite my lip as my heart sped off the charts.
MC: Evan, what are you… doing…?
Evan: I'm thinking about your question.
Evan: You asked me what sort of place I'd like to live at, correct?
MC: Then… what does this have anything to do with that?
Evan: I feel like your eyes might hold the answer I seek.
MC: That's a lie and you know it…
My voice grew softer and softer because Evan was slowly lowering himself down.
Watching those dark red eyes of his that hid a glimpse of a smirk in its depths gradually draw closer, I panicked, stiffening up as my mind went completely blank...
I frantically swiped his glasses from the bridge of his nose, turning over to keep them away from him.
MC: Any more, and no glasses for you!
Evan paused, a little stunned at the sudden loss of his glasses. He then moved away with a smile, lying back down on the grass.
Tumblr media
Evan: Did I scare you? I apologize. I just wanted to poke fun at you.
Evan: Sometimes you’ll bite off more than you can handle when you think someone too simple.
I inwardly breathed a sigh of relief before angrily puffing out my cheek.
MC: Okay, okay, you’re not simple! Even more so to keep your glasses away from you!
Evan: Then I’d better stick close to you and let you lead me around. Will that be alright?
Evan: Hm? (Y/n).
I turned my back on him and felt him gently place a hand on my shoulder. The heat swiftly passed through the thin fabric of my clothes, making me unwittingly shudder at the warmth.
I could even feel his eyes digging into me. The area where he burned holes into me with his eyes was hot, the grass underneath me was no different, and neither were the glasses I held in my hands.
I couldn’t form the words to answer him; all I could do was to hope that he couldn’t hear how fast my heart was racing.
❖☆———————————★❖
Tumblr media
The next day, early morning. I woke up to the melodious singing of birds.
Evan was already awake, neatly dressed and sitting on the folded chair at the entrance, sipping on a cup of coffee.
Evan: Good morning. Sleep well last night?
MC: Brilliantly! I was so tired from walking so long yesterday that I fell asleep the moment my head met the pillow.
MC: Oh, right. It’ll take quite a long time to go back where we came, so let’s eat something, pack up, and leave as soon as possible!
Evan set his cup of coffee down,
Evan: Aren’t you forgetting something?
MC: Huh?
Evan: I recall you wanting to see bamboo piths, but we have yet to see any.
I froze, awkwardly laughing it off
That had originally been an excuse to get him outside and I’d totally forgotten about it.
MC: Hehe. I’m not that adamant about seeing bamboo piths.
MC: I only said that back then as an excuse to get you out so that you can relax.
Tumblr media
MC: I heard that you had things rather rough before that so I was a little worried about you.
He looked slightly surprised. Then, he lowered his eyes, a warm smile catching onto the sides of his mouth.
Tumblr media
Evan: So it was because of me.
Evan: Thank you for accompanying me here. I’m certainly much more relaxed now.
MC: But considering how you were previously… Are you really okay?
Tumblr media
Evan: Yes. It’s probably not as bad as you’re thinking. I was just thinking about some old people and old things and felt a little glum about it.
Evan: I never thought that I’d end up alarming others.
MC: Why am I “others” now?
MC: Don’t bottle your troubles up to solve them yourself. You need to remember to share them with people close to you as well!
Evan: Okay. I will keep that in mind.
I still didn’t know what he was troubled by, but I suppose this was still within my expectations.
From my impression of him, he has always been strong. It was almost as if he was shouldering a mission that no one knew about, walking down a similarly obscured path.
After finishing breakfast, we packed and prepared to leave the forest.
We idly chatted with each other along the way until suddenly, Evan stopped short while we were passing through an area.
Following his gaze, I saw a unique-looking umbrella-shaped thing growing within the shrubbery’s shade.
Tumblr media
Evan: See? We still managed to chance upon it.
MC: Wow, are all of these bamboo piths?
We walked over together, squatting beside the small white fungi.
It had a small black cap and had grown out a long white mesh skirt.
This was the first time I ever saw a bamboo pith growing in the soil. I widened my eyes in surprise, unwilling to blink as I drank in the sight. After observing it for a while, I finally raised a finger, reaching out to touch its “skirt”.
MC: It’s so wet and soft-looking! It’s adorable! Have you seen it before, Evan?
MC: I can’t believe you managed to recognize it at a glance!
Evan: Yes. It was back during the first time I’d been driven into the forest as a child.
Evan: I witnessed the law of the jungle and escaped from the jaws of death of a snake. I felt like the forest was a place filled with danger and wanted nothing but to leave the place the faster, the better.
Evan: Then, just as I was hungry and exhausted, I saw a bamboo pith.
Evan: At that time, I didn’t know what it was and if it was actually poisonous.
Evan: Deep in the throes of despair, I thought “why not just take it, eat it, and see what my fate turns out to be”?
Tumblr media
MC: Evan…
Evan: But guess what I saw while I was hesitating?
Evan: I saw it growing its fungus skirt. All it took was a little effort on its part, and its little skirt grew longer and longer.
Evan: I stared at it blankly, in a daze. I didn’t even notice that my legs had gone numb from how long I’d stared at it.
He retracted himself from his memory palace, turning around to face me with a smile.
Evan: It was as simple as a little young lady, capable of encouraging me with its adorability and enchantments.
Evan: It made me understand that forest, in all its gloom and doom, still has its own little interesting spots.
Evan: And that one is only capable of seeing it by living on, don’t you think?
His expression was quiet, but within those calm eyes of his, I could see that little boy who’d struggled his hardest to remain strong. I felt my heart constrict slightly at that and moved to hold his hand tightly in my own.
Tumblr media
MC: Evan, that’s all in the past. You’re no longer that helpless little boy.
Evan: No, I’m fine.
Evan: I might have forgotten even this if we hadn’t seen the bamboo piths today.
Evan: It feels a little unbelievable when I think back on it now. It was a memory plagued by darkness, yet it still held its own beautiful moments.
I felt a pang of sorrow creep into my heart. Words of comfort were right at the tip of my tongue, yet I felt like they’d be completely helpless.
This man before me, strong as a warrior; someone who’d been forced to face life-or-death decisions from a very young age… Maybe he wasn’t as complicated as I initially thought he was.
There are many reasons why one would choose death, but to choose life? The reason was simple; just a little spark was required, and Evan was no exception.
MC: I forgot who said it, but someone once said that the meaning of existence that people spend their entire lives seeking out is actually hidden in the simple things.
MC: Evan, won’t you say that you might end up thinking similarly as well one day?
MC: You might not be able to find it immediately, but that’s fine. I will accompany you in your search for it, no matter how long it takes.
Evan fixed me with a profound look before stretching out his hand and reverently crossing it over my own.
Evan: Alright. Together we shall be.

Here is my entry for @slocotion ‘s last contest of the year! Forgive me for posting this close to the deadline; I have spent weeks perfecting her design and story. While I may not be the best at art, I hope my entry is at least considered! Dr. Belladonna Marmalade is the local doctor in her small, Russian village! She has a unique way of going about things; get on her good side, and her bitter-tasting medicine will cure all of your ailments and send you on your merry way! Get on her bad side...and her treatment might make you feel worse than you've ever felt.
Her hat is embellished with her home-grown mushrooms, and she'll often offer these to small children to eat! Apparently, they taste quite good both by themselves and in soup. If you steal them from her without her permission, they require an antidote in the next 30 minutes to prevent paralysis, shock, and death. Her clothes and face are adorned with gorgeous shades of white, pink and gold to appeal to those she wants to trust her; kids love playing with the bits and baubles on her clothing, and the village woman are always complimenting her on her adorned frills and jewels! Those who get to know her anger, however, only see her bulging red eyes, always-gloved hands and never revealed face. Dr. Marmalade uses what she calls her 'spores' in the air to cure disease wherever she may walk! She keeps these spores in the oversized Birds' Nest Fungi that grow on her belt. If she is especially concerned for a family, she will remove one of these mushrooms and leave it behind for them as she continues her travels. Design Notes under the Read More! Warning for photos of mushrooms/fungi if that kind of stuff grosses anyone out.
I wanted to keep Belladonna more in the realm of 'plague doctor based on mushrooms' rather than 'mushroom person based on plague doctors', which was difficult to achieve without completely removing the classic plague doctor hat and shawl, but I managed to incorporate the patterns of many inedible/poisonous fungi into her design. Her bulging red eyes are based on the 'blood' of the Bleeding Tooth mushroom, and I believe they can be made out of the same clay as her body. If that does not work, filling the eyeholes with red resin may also work (again, I am no dollmaker so I have no clue what you'd actually do in a doll like Belladonna.)
Tumblr media
Her shawl that lays on her shoulders puffs out and has multiple layers of lace underneath to add volume. This is a subtle nod to the deadly frills of the Amanita Verna mushroom, which is poisonous enough to kill a man.
Tumblr media
The gold cover that goes over her petticoat and the gold web-like pattern on her sleeves, hat, belt and anklets are nods to the Bamboo Pith, a stinkhorn that has very intricate web-like gills. This mushroom is specifically known for its ability to attract insects and animals to spread its spores, which I subtly acknowledged in her short backstory. (Note: While the Pith itself is edible, there are many poisonous mushrooms with this same web pattern, like the Clathrus Ruber. The Pith is just the best reference for said pattern. I am not going to torture any poor fabric makers/cutters by giving you a reference photo of a tightly-packed mushroom gill lol.)
Tumblr media
The spore-carriers on her hip are based off of the common, yet inedible Birds' Nest fungi, which are known for bursting and launching their spores out everywhere to spread their growth. I am not sure what these could be made of. Possibly clay, resin, thick felt or anything strong enough to hold up on fabric.
Tumblr media
There are plenty of other little mushroom-inspired things in her design, but I also kept in mind the multicolored patterns and intricate clothing of the classic Slocotion plague doctor doll. That being said, I am absolutely okay with any fabric of this doll being replaced with a different pattern/texture. This design is absolutely open to editing in any way imaginable. If I get considered, but an element needs to be reworked, edited or removed for it to be passable, I am absolutely okay with that. I am just really excited for the opportunity to be included in such a wonderful artist’s contest in the first place. Happy New Year’s Eve to anyone who read this far! (P.S. I can't draw lace very well, but the frilly stuff on the sides of her pants and under the main pink fabric of her shawl are meant to be frilly lace. I wanted these to subtly reference the 'fluffiness' of the gills of many mushrooms.)

Gange Mahamudra
Ganges Mahamudra
Pith instructions from Tilopa
I bow to Vajra Dakini.
1.
Mahamudra cannot be taught, Naropa,
But your devotion to your teacher and the hardships you’ve met
Have made you patient in suffering and also wise:
Take this to heart, my worthy student.
2.
For instance, consider space: what depends on what?
Likewise, mahamudra: it doesn’t depend on anything.
Don’t control. Let go and rest naturally.
Let what binds you let go and freedom is not in doubt.
3.
When you look into space, seeing stops.
Likewise, when mind looks at mind,
The flow of thinking stops
and you come to the deepest awakening.
4.
Mists rise from the earth and vanish into space.
They go nowhere, nor do they stay.
Likewise, though thoughts arise,
Whenever you see your mind, the clouds of thinking clear.
5.
Space is beyond color or shape.
It doesn’t take on color, black or white: it doesn’t change.
Likewise, your mind, in essence, is beyond color or shape.
It does not change because you do good or evil.
6.
The darkness of a thousand eons cannot dim
The brilliant radiance that is the essence of the sun.
Likewise, eons of samsara cannot dim
The sheer clarity that is the essence of your mind.
7.
Although you say space is empty,
You can’t say that space is “like this”.
Likewise, although mind is said to be sheer clarity,
There is nothing there: you can’t say “it’s like this”.
8.
Thus, the nature of mind is inherently like space:
It includes everything you experience.
9.
Stop all physical activity: sit naturally at ease.
Do not talk or speak: let sound be empty, like an echo.
Do not think about anything: look at experience beyond thought.
10.
Your body has no core, hollow like bamboo.
Your mind goes beyond thought, open like space.
Let go of control and rest right there.
11.
Mind without projection is mahamudra.
Train and develop this and you will come to the deepest awakening.
12.
You don’t see mahamudra’s sheer clarity
By means of classical texts or philosophical systems,
Whether of the mantras, paramitas,
Vinaya, sutras or other collections.
13.
Ambition clouds sheer clarity and you don’t see it.
Thinking about precepts undermines the point of commitment.
Do not think about anything; let all ambition drop.
Let what arises settle by itself, like patterns in water.
No place, no focus, no missing the point —
Do not break this commitment: it is the light in the dark.
14.
When you are free from ambition and don’t hold any position,
You will see all that the scriptures teach.
When you open to this, you are free from samsara’s prison.
When you settle in this, all evil and distortion burn up.
This is called “The Light of the Teaching”.
15.
The foolish are not interested in this.
The currents of samsara constantly carry them away.
Oh, how pitiable, the foolish — their struggles never end.
Don’t accept these struggles, long for freedom, and rely on a skilled teacher.
When his (her) energy enters your heart, your mind is freed.
16.
What joy!
Samsaric ways are senseless: they are the seeds of suffering.
Conventional ways are pointless. Focus on what is sound and true.
Majestic outlook is beyond all fixation.
Majestic practice is no distraction.
Majestic behavior is no action or effort.
The fruition is there when you are free from hope and fear.
17.
Beyond any frame of reference mind is naturally clear.
Where there is no path you begin the path of awakening.
Where there is nothing to work on you come to the deepest awakening.
18.
Alas! Look carefully at this experience of the world.
Nothing lasts. It’s like a dream, like magic.
The dream, the magic, makes no sense.
Experience this grief and forget the affairs of the world.
19.
Cut all ties of involvement with country or kin,
Practice alone in forest or mountain retreats.
Rest, not practicing anything.
When you come to nothing to come to, you come to mahamudra.
20.
A tree spreads its branches and leaves.
Cut the root and ten thousand branches wither.
Likewise, cut the root of mind and the leaves of samsara wither.
21.
Though darkness gathers for a thousand eons,
A single light dispels it all.
Likewise, one moment of sheer clarity
Dispels the ignorance, evil and confusion of a thousand eons.
22.
What joy!
With the ways of the intellect you won’t see beyond intellect.
With the ways of action you won’t know non-action.
If you want to know what is beyond intellect and action,
Cut your mind at its root and rest in naked awareness.
23.
Let the cloudy waters of thinking settle and clear.
Let appearances come and go on their own.
With nothing to change, the world you experience becomes mahamudra.
Because the basis of experience has no beginning,
patterns and distortions fall away.
Rest in no beginning, with no self-interest or expectation.
Let what appears appear on its own and let conceptual ways subside.
24.
The most majestic of outlooks is free of all reference.
The most majestic of practices is vast and deep without limit.
The most majestic of behaviors is open-minded and impartial.
The most majestic of fruitions is natural being, free of concern.
25.
At first, practice is a river rushing through a gorge.
In the middle, it’s the river Ganges, smooth and flowing.
In the end, it’s where all rivers meet, mother and child.
26.
When your mind is less acute and does not truly rest,
Work the essentials of energy and bring out the vitality of awareness.
Using gazes and techniques to take hold of mind
Train awareness until it does truly rest.
27.
When you practice with a sexual partner, empty bliss awareness arises.
The balancing of method and wisdom transforms energy.
Let it descend gently, collect it, draw it back up,
Return it to its place, and let it saturate your body.
When you are free from longing and desire, empty bliss awareness arises.
28.
You will have a long life, you will not gray, and you will shine like the moon.
You will radiate health and well-being and be as strong as a lion.
You will quickly attain the ordinary abilities and open to the supreme one.
May these pith instructions, the essentials of mahamudra,
Abide in the hearts of all worthy beings.
These are the great Tilopa’s oral instructions. On the completion of the twelve hardships, Tilopa taught these on the banks of the river Ganges to the Kashmiri pandit, the wise and learned Naropa. Naropa taught The Twenty-Eight Vajra Verses to the great interpreter, the king of translators, Marpa Chökyi Lodrö. Marpa finalized his translation at Pulahari in the north of India. Ken McLeod translated this into English in Los Angeles in the southwest of the United States, working from the efforts of previous translators and various commentaries.
