The heart doesn't seem to choose by team colours

Note: english is not my first language. This is the first driver!reader I've ever written, so I hope I've done a good job. Also, I did not plan to post this piece specifically now, but seems fitting with the whole shitshow that has been going on the past couple of days. Also, this is a plot I've seen written a lot, so I know there are many other pieces that are way better, and hopefully my take on it isn't too bad!

Your purple race suit made you stand out amongst all of the other kids as you walked back from the podium, proudly smiling at your trophy, "Y/N! We're here!", you heard your father as he waved so you'd know where they stood, "congratulations, darling! That was an impressive overtake you did there in the last lap!", he praised, scratching your head before placing a kiss there, "I was trying to get first, but I couldn't get it", you admitted it, looking sideways at the boy who you couldn't take the first place from.

George Russell was a tall boy, same age as you, so you often raced against eachother. While you had become friends with some of the other kids, Russell wasn't one of them. It began when you tried to congratulate him for his P3 a few years ago, stretching your hand out politely, a smile on your face as he turned his back to you, mumbling something as he walked towards his parents. So, you weren't the best of friends if anyone asked.

"Y/N, darling, go stand next to the boys so I can take a picture of you! It will be such a good memory for when you're older!", your mother said excitedly, making you, George and the boy that finished his race behind you on each of your sides, smiling at the camera and hoping it would be as quick as possible, not wanting to stand next to him for a second longer than you should.

"I have your media day schedules here", Mary said as she handed you and Oscar your respective schedules, "Y/N, you're going to get interviewed with Charles, Yuki, George and Fernando", she stated as she then moved on to Oscar, explaing a few things to him since he was going first.

"And Y/N, while you're in there, try not to kill George, even with your eyes, okay?", she advised, tapping your shoulder softly as you looked at her sideways, "last time you were both in the same panel, you managed to be out of qualifying", she nodded, "only because our car wasn't that reliable, and we all know how theirs is", you pointed out, smiling sweetly and hoping to get on her side, "you're lucky you don't annoy me too much, Y/N", she smiled back.

The team had made many improvements to the car, granting you and Oscar the possibility to aim for higher places on the grid, and since you were a nerd about all things engineering, too, you loved when you were asked about the topic. But lately, the questions about the car seemed to get asked to your teammate Oscar, leaving the excuse that "the journalists already have the information they need", and because they didn't want to be accused of not asking you questions like it had happened before, it seemed to divert to other topics.

"Y/N, here", one of the journalists waved, grabbing your attention, "With the recent events and new propositions from the F1 Academy, do you think the sport is going to suffer from having a bigger opportunity that's being given to women in motorsport?", your heard him say, making your blood boil.

Despite the constant raised awareness for gender discrimination and discrimination in motorsport, especially in the last couple of years, some people still had it pretty engraved in their system, and while sometimes it came out looking a little bit more subtle, this one didn't even bother to soften the edges.

You'd be lying if you said this was the first time you heard these comments directed at you, or that you thought it would be the last, no matter how much you wished some sort of disciplinary measure was taken, "I woul-", you began before you heard a loud clash on the floor and felt water on your legs. The trousers you were wearing were soaked around your thighs and knees as George got up to grab the bottle that belonged to him, "I'm so sorry, Y/N", he apoligised as he put the lid back on, "I think it's best if we call it a day, hm? The next group needs to have this cleaned before they come in here", the Mercedes driver said as everyone seemed to agree and get up, bidding goodbye as Charles and George stayed until the end.

"Careful, don't slip", the monegasque driver said, making sure you wouldn't fall and walking out of the room with you, "figures the guy wouldn't even be here to check if everything's fine", you muttered as Charles chuckled, "you two really are like the cat and the mouse".

"He's not even here! He just flew off to his fancy room to delight in the joy of making fun of me", you grumbled, bidding goodbye to Charles as you found yourself by the entrance of Ferrari.

Walking the distance to meet your team, Mary was the first to get you, "I'm sorry they asked that", she said, "it's a good thing Russell spilled his drink", she teased, knowing you wouldn't want to dwell on the comments for long. It hardly solved the problem and you'd look into it in the team meeting when the time called for it, "promise you won't take him out in the race?".

Laughingly at her assumption and the fact that she had managed to pull you out of your misery as you walked to you driver's room, "don't worry, and tell the guys downstairs to now worry either, they're not going to have to build me a new car either", you flashed a smile before closing the door, changing into another pair of trousers you had brought with you.

"You're starting P4, Y/N", your race engineer said over the radio, "we are going to give it our all to support you and help you".

"And I'm going to drive the beat I can for you guys. Today, we get orange flying around and its going to be because of the Papaya team", you smiled under your helmet, "Oscar is P6, so I think we can even aim for a Podium, depends on how things go", you said.

As soon as the lights went out, you reacted quickly and passed the car that had been sitting next to yours, your race engineer confirming your third place and giving you a run down of all the grid changes.

"Do us proud, you're doing well, good pace", you heard on your speakers. You were enjoying the drive, analysing the data without team and looking for the right opportunity to overtake Charles, "go after the next turn, Y/N. Charles' tyres are not looking so good, so we think you have the upper hand there. George's car seems to be having some issues, too, he won't go after you", the pit wall channeled in your radio.

You looked in your mirrors as you were about to make the overtake, having patiently waited to reach the specific turn and going with it, confident that you would be able to overtake the red car.

A fraction of a second, you would always say, was game changing in Formula One. A decision to overtake or stay back, to accept the call to the pits or a new strategy, sometimes all it took was less than a second. And it also took less than a second for your car to start spinning, making you remove your hands from your steering wheel and brace yourself for the collision that would soon enough happen.

The impact wasn't as hard as you had expected, having felt most of it in your hips and shoulders. Groaning, you opened your eyes to see the damage, hearing "Y/N, can you tell us if you are okay?" over the radio.

Pressing the button, you heard the equipment's buzz, "I'm okay. I'm sorry about the car, guys", you gulped, adjusting yourself, "another car tapped me, right? Are they okay?", you asked, "George's fine from what we've heard".

After the marshalls confirmed you were free to go with the medical car to get checked over, you were back in the hospitality as the race continued, "doctor said I'll have some bruises, nothing too bad though", you gave them the report as you apoligised and thanked everyone on your side of the garage.

"Turns out they'll have to build you a new car after all", Mary offered as she hugged you, "if Russell had been more careful, this could've ended differently", you groaned.

"From what I've heard, he was trying a risky move and the car had an issue and locked up. He lost control of it and his front wing tapped your rear wheels just about enough to cause the crash", she explained, "it's not like he purposefully wanted to take you out", she reasoned.

"I know, it's just not ideal", you sighed, "we could both be in there". On the screen, Oscar was sitting P2, having successfully overtaken Charles a few laps in after the race resumed.

Even though George was far from your friend, you still wanted to check if he was okay, specially after seeing the impact the crash had on his car, too.

Walking to the Mercedes hospitality, a few people stopped you on your tracks briefly to express their relief on seeing you up and about and wishing you well before you found yourself by the glass doors.

"Is George here? I'd like to see if he's doing alright, but only if that's okay, I'm sure you're busy", you asked one of the media girls, Holly, recognising her from previous encounters.

"He's in his driver's room, yes, let me walk you there", she smiled, walking with you and knocking on the door, "George, may I come in?", she asked before he gave a positive answer, "Y/N is here, she wanted to talk to you", she stated, backing up so you could be seen, "yes, that's alright", the tall man said as Holly held out her arm, gesturing you to walk inside the room as she closed the door behind her, most likely going back to work on the race content.

"Hey", you waved awkwardly, "I don't have any other way to contact you, and asking your team how you were didn't seem... right? So, yeah, I came here", you gulped, suddenly feeling a weird pressure to act properly, whatever that meant.

"I'm good, barely got a scratch since I was able to stop the car before it hit the barriers", George explained, "and you? It looked pretty bad", he checked.

"I have some bruises, I think the adrenaline is slowing down now, so it's a bit painful, but nothing major", you clarified.

"The car had some issue and there was not way to control it, I just let it go because there wasn't anything I could do. I'm very glad you're okay", he half smiled as he looked at you.

In all the years you've known him and interacted with him, there had never been a time where he was this relaxed and smiley around you, not even when he had overtaken you in the last lap of the race. And while it was new, it was also comfortable.

"Me too, it looked scarier than it felt, though", you offered as he grabbed his water bottle to take a sip from it, "Oh, close the lid properly on that one", you chuckled playfully, not imagining the backlash and reaction it would have.

The new and comfortable mood turned back to the old and expecting one.

"Do you really think I'm that clumsy to drop a bottle like that? I wanted to get us out of there, to get you out of there because they were asking sexist questions", he stated, "and I didn't do it because I thought you couldn't defend yourself, because you sure know how to stop your foot and put it down, but because they don't deserve your time like that. Hell, I wish you spent that little time with me instead!", George yelled out, not missing your shocked expression, "maybe there was a time that I didn't like how you just showed up and got things done, but in the end, it's not because it's you, or because you're a woman. I wanted to be the one to show up and get things done, because I admire you so much", he gulped.

"So you're saying it's my fault that I've been labelled a bad sport because we constantly fight out there? That's why you've hated me?", your defensive side turned up, not dwelling on his kind words.

"I'm not saying it is either of our fault! I'm just trying to explain to you that I don't hate you like you think I do", he put his hands on his hips, walking around his room, "you might hate me, and that's fine, you know? I'm not going to be the one to tell you how you should feel, that's not how it works, but I have never hate you.

"I might've said I hated you when we were little, but that's because you probably stole my place on the podium, and even that was probably well deserved. I never thought I'd feel like this about you", he concluded.

"And what is it that you feel about me? Because I would like a warning should you want to beat me up to deal with all it is that you're feeling...?", you gestured to his stance. Was he saying he didn't hate you? Did he have other feelings that were actually in the happiness section of the emotion wheel and not near the anger section?

Chuckling, he approached you, "I have had feelings for you since we started driving in F2. At first I thought it was just the thrill of the competition and of having someone to challenge me, and when you got the Mclaren seat, I was so happy that you'd be racing against me", he further offered, "I don't know when it came out that we hated eachother, and when you didn't seem to feel otherwise, I tried to hate you, or at least dislike you, and it wasn't working, so I just let it go however it went, and it's led me here. And I'm being honest with you, so laugh all you want, or deal with it however you want to", he raised his hands as he excused himself.

"George, I nerve said anything because I can't afford to say those things. How many rivalries have you seen in motorsport? So many, and many more that are not written in books and shown off in videos. And none of them have apoligies to offer, or rather, the very few that have done it, turned out okay. But if I was the one to talk about it? A female driver talking about how she cares that her colleagues and her have a good relation and that they don't hate eachother like the press wants people to believe?", you scoffed, "That's not on my books, that's not something I can consider.

"And I don't hate you, George. For Goodness' sake, I came here to see of you were alright. Any other person would've yelled that you ruined their race, but I understand that there are things we can't control and shit like this happens. It sucks, but that's how it is. Like Charles says all the time, 'sometimes it's like this'", you giggled, "I actually think you're a pretty decent guy", you blushed.

Over the years, the bickering had only spurred you on even more, and maybe it wasn't just the thrill of seeing him so on edge that made you continue to do so.

"So you're saying you've never hated me?",

George said as he offered you his chair to sit down as he prepared tea for both of you, "Maybe I didn't like you so much when we did karting, but that was just because you were really tall and actually gave me fair competition", you winked.

Comic Paneling Process

to answer a question from @pluviatrix, here’s a post detailing how I approach paneling!

The unhelpful answer is that it really depends on what kind of scene I’m trying to fit onto a page, because the energy and mood will dictate the kinds of shapes and layouts I gravitate towards. I usually start out with a short script, which for the last two bonus links updates looked like this:

Writing the script helps me visualize what needs to happen and gives me a good idea of how many pages it might take. There’s a few rules of thumb that I use to start:

angled panels = intensity. So do irregular panel shapes, but the more irregular the panels are the harder it is to balance other panels on the page, so that’s something to keep in mind

Lots of small, close together panels = fast-paced action, especially if the panels are angled. Larger, spaced out panels = a slower paced, even maybe a slow motion feel.

5 panels per page is the sweet spot. Sometimes it can be less if a moment is really important and I want to emphasize it, but I try not to have any more than 8, because any more and it starts to get overcrowded.

Your goal is to lead the eye around. Because I make comics in english, that means that everything should be designed around zig-zagging from left to right, down, left to right. The eye will naturally do that, but helping it out leads to pages that feel smoother. If I’m going to break that form, I have to find a way to force the eye to go where I want it to go.

That last one is the most important. There’s a few ways you can create this zig-zag: with the text boxes, with the poses, or with the panels themselves. Ideally it would be all 3. So for a basic 5 panel example:

option 1 is less visually clear than option 2, because the first two rows of panels don’t lead your eye smoothly. Generally speaking, whatever you choose for your first row of panels, the second row needs to contrast, unless you’re creating an even grid intentionally. Here’s an example of a page where I break the rules a little, but I make up for it by guiding the eye around:

Once again generally speaking putting two smaller panels next to one taller panel can be somewhat confusing as to which order you should read the panels in, but I tried to mitigate that with making those two small panels a pulled out shot and then a close-up of the same subject. Then, the use of that big text bubble coming from the horn forces the eye up to the top of the taller panel, which then draws ur eye down because of those two silver lizalfos at the bottom. The lizalfos in those two angled panels are posed facing the ways I want to lead the reader’s eye, and so is Beetle. And here are some notes on how I approached this action-heavy page:

That middle row is all angles with things swinging in and out of frame to suggest quick, sudden movement. That close up of Loft is wedged in the middle like it’s chipping off the next panel, with Loft looking direct into the events of the next panel to communicate that he’s anticipated the Lizalfos’ movements. And to finish off, here’s what this most recent update looked like in sketch:

I start out making the panels themselves first and just treat it like a graphic design problem, trying to make sure it all feels balanced on the page. And then I fill them in and adjust as needed.

And that’s about all I’ve got! I hope this was helpful lol and if anyone has like specific questions abt stuff feel free to shoot them my way! Of course, everything that I say here has an exception, and there are plenty of instances where you can break these ‘rules’ in service of the story you’re telling. That’s actually my biggest piece of advice- your panels are a part of the story! They’re another tool in ur arsenal to set the mood and feeling, so you should utilize them!

BTTMW4 recap

Well, here we go ...

General

As most of you heard, last year's con, BTTMW2, with 14 guests was a fucked-up fiasco. This one ... wasn't anywhere near as bad.

(Though, tbf, there was no way for a con to be worse than last year's edition. Even the DI staff said that.)

There was better communication and fewer delays. And the cast didn't look like they were about to keel over any second.

There were even actual JATP panels! On both days! With all of the cast being present! All the time! And they actually got to talk about their show and other projects.

After three years, there wasn't much new information. The cast talking about the props they received (in Owen's case: stole) from the set was the most interesting thing.

Though Charlie talking about how he got sent to community theater bc he kept playing air guitar at his hockey games was so freaking adorable. And it felt so Luke.

The party ... and the "JATP concert"

So, while BTTMW4 was a fantastic experience in general, the party was a huge disappointment.

We already had a bad start. One of my friends is in a wheelchair, and the main access to the room was via a few steps. What kind of genius idea was this, DI?! It took them quite a few minutes to figure out how to get her down to the room. On the way back, I followed her. It was like an escape game.

So, yeah, not the ideal start.

And it didn't get much better. After last year's experience, I stayed away from the food. As cute as it looked, I wasn't keen on getting a Sunset Curve experience again.

Now the "JATP concert"

Well, it wasn't a "JATP concert". It was mostly Madi performing her own music. The closest we got to a JATP concert was her singing along to "Stand Tall" - the song was playing while the cast entered the room.

It was obvious that the guys didn't want to get on stage and sing. That's absolutely understandable. But then DI shouldn't have advertised it as a JATP concert. There were people who paid €220 for this party just to see the JATP concert. I'd be fuming if I had paid for that. (Please, don't get me wrong. Madi has an amazing voice. Unfortunately, her music doesn't do it any justice. And the terrible playback made it worse.)

So, anyway, yeah, not a good concert. The party got slightly better after the concert. Brenna D'Amico saved the party by getting on stage and doing group karaoke with the fans.

Random thoughts and occurrences:

Owen saying that this year was the first time he didn't get a gift for Nikolaus was heartbreaking

Owen with his giant emotional support candy cane - adorkable

The Chowen meeting room was exactly as messed up as a friend and I predicted - two independent conversations in one room: The French fans chatting with Charlie and the rest of us talking to Owen in English. (How the French girls actually understood Charlie's archaic French - no clue. Magic.)

I got nervous when I gave Charlie his ghosties. He squeezed the bag, noticed the content was squishy, and asked if he should keep his dog away from it ... RIP Ghosties - they'll be Koa's snack.

The ones who actually looked into their bags (Sacha, Madi & Owen) said they liked the ghosties.

We got a video message from Kenny, saying he's working on some theatre productions. (I really hope he didn't ditch us bc of Zac's star on the Walk of Fame, though.)

The hotel charged €14 for a footlong sandwich. WTF?! I didn't buy one, but I kinda want to know what was on this sandwich. €14 ... even at overpriced train station shops, I get 3 sandwiches for the same price. The hotel was pretty fancy, though.

Today is Bart Johnson's (Coach Bolton) birthday. At the closing ceremony, right after DI said again that it would be the last con, he got a birthday cake, and he was asked to make a wish. So he said: "BTTMW5"! The faces of the DI bosses were priceless.

Honestly, it looks like DI might cave and do another edition. But who knows.

Fun fact: While my souvenir is COVID, all my friends got influenza. WTF?!

There are probably more things to talk about, but my brain is too foggy to come up with more stuff. So that's what you get for now.

2. In the name of bullying Yun Taeheon, I need his reaction to Mun Doyun- aka the B rank assassin that was Shin Junseo’s guild leader. Cuz objectively, Yun Taeheon knows a lot can happen in a year and stuff, but also he’s an S-rank leader of a top guild that is willing to give Shin Junseo just about anything and he still cannot recruit him. And then there’s this B-rank nobody (to him) who specifically hired Shin Junseo - as a D rank weapon creator who could only make an average knife every 20 seconds - BC HE HAD A SKILL THAST DESTROYED THE BLADES HE USED. Literally the same reason!! But no, somehow Yun Taeheon is losing this race.

Even better if he somehow gets more backstory or through some time shenanigans he meets the other Mun Doyun, who is basically the reason Shin Junseo is even as good as he is. Like, the reason sjs learned all he could and stuff. Anyway, yth being objectively, obviously on a higher level than this dude and yet still absolutely seething at the very idea of how much he apparently is not measuring up. How do you think that should go?

also, looking at the firsts chapter and think the first chapter and I think Sjs could be the little kid at the very beginning? Meaning that he has grown up in he world of hunters and gates, giving some cool world building to how this is a whole generation of ppl growing up with gates and magic.

However, for the sake of getting more of your sugar daddy au, I am ignoring that. Or maybe it could be incorporated, like- yth was trying to figure out how to ask sjs for just, an actual relationship. And sjs had stopped their contract after signing onto the guild. Extra tension!! Cuz obviously yth wasn’t gonna reach out and be like, “Hey, so that didn’t work out…”

Huh! Now that you mention it, that could track! Would be rather interesting too as I'd put this kid somehwere between 8 and 12, which implies dungeons have been a thing for much longer than just a couple of years. Tho I assumed the adult in the next panel was YTH, so hmmm. But also what does this say about the state of his family. where the fuck are they. I need answers. And also I'd love some worldbuilding around growing up in such a world. In SCTIR, one of my fave things is to linger on like, the first weeks after the dungeon breaks. how did legislation change, the government, the way people reacto to this-

"In the name of bullying YTH" man we really all just took a look at this guy, who is probably meant to be like a cool badass character and decided we shall treat him like our sibling's new boyfriend and thus make fun of hinm. huh. god given right to bully the man.

But yeah, do you think YTH assumed just a little bit that SJS had like weird trauma. and also like- okay full confession time. when I started reading this, I assumed this guy would be our love interest second protag. I mean. look at him and SJS reaction to praise

and the way SJS also thinks of this guild in the future memories he receives? a place where he was accepted, found friends, where they kept pushing forward together- Listen. also the way it lingers on MDY's body there. I'm just saying, the vibes are accurate. to me.

Anyway, YTH does have the vibes of somebody who is incredibly understanding but privately also has beef with a dead man. he knows it's unfair and stupid, but also he could buy SJS a god damn pent house apartment. he would. that and any item he wants. actually I just realized while typing this would've been really fucking great to insert into my little soulmate fanfic given I did toss in like one sided bonds existing there. something to consider for the future.

But man, I think it would be interesting if SJS is confronted with him again also in the context of like, SJS not recognizing MDY's brother despite his future memories, which sure has some implication. I told a friend that like my assumption is that Mun Dojin died in the other timeline and I desperately need him and SJS to talk because even if the memories SJS has never actually existed here, that still sort of makes him the only person MDJ can talk to.

actually, man. this would make anything SJS/YTH even funnier. here's your crush. there's your crush's vampire familier and his ex guildmaster's (former bf's??????) little brother. god I need MDJ and Elizabeth to show up more often. slkdfhsldkh sorry got entirely off track here.

OKAY BACK TO SUGAR DADDY AU- I just realized how fucking hilarious this would also be because like. SJS manages to bag one man and it's this big shot guild leader. and instead of signing up with his guild, he goes to these small nobodies. like, it probably just makes sense to SJS. This was a job, now here is another, newer job. Life goes on.

YTH meanwhile is the math meme. Min Huisu told him to get a social life. he paid someone for that, but the guy turns out to be actually cute and fun, so he'd like to have a relationship that is not just superifical. and this guy just. mcfucking signs on to a guild he hasn't even heard of. f in the fucking chat

ML Flower Meanings in VADD Chapter 90

In leaked screenshots of Chapter 90, where they announce the placements of the hunting competition's participants, the four MLs— Derrick, Reynold, Winter, and Callisto— are shown surrounded by flowers.

Of course, all of us know that SUOL-nim is fond of putting small details into her work(and I make my English teachers proud by overanalyzing things), so here's a quick breakdown of the flowers and their meanings.

Derrick Eckhart: Blue Hydrangea

Hydrangeas are a multitude of species, the majority of which are native to East Asia. Their name comes from two Greek words, which together mean "water vessel". This refers to the shape of the flowers, but can also be to this genus's tendency to need a lot of water. Hydrangea colors can be all over the place due to soil pH, and in theme with that, they have varied meanings, especially when taking into account different cultures.

Blue Hydrangeas symbolize regret, apologies, and forgiveness.

This could mean that Derrick is regretting how he treated Penelope and is trying to ask for her forgiveness(unlikely, but let a girl dream). Perhaps it can also be Penelope's regret in trusting Derrick during the trial, and him immediately blowing that chance to high heaven and into hell the second he opened his mouth.

Sidenote: I originally thought they were chrysanthemums because I got blinded by ML sparkles. (I need to sleep.) I'll add my original explanation for chrysanthemums below.

Blue Chrysanthemums, which I thought Derrick was depicted with, symbolize a love that is over and how the person has gotten over the pain.

It could be referring to how Penelope no longer trusts Derrick as of the end of Season 2, and how she has decided his route to be unviable.

Blue is also the color that Derrick is associated with throughout the novel: his ribbon, his clothes, and not to mention, the teaser image dropped during the series' release countdown.

Reynold Eckhart: Pink Roses

Roses are a ubiquitous sight in any situation that necessitates. With over 300 species and tens of thousands of human-bred variations, roses can have many different appearances and meanings. Even a difference in the shade can have a new meaning.

Reynold is shown with pale pink roses in the background. The specific variety is unknown, but it looks like a Belinda's Dream Rose or a Royal Highness Rose to me. Both of them have the pale pink color and classic rose shape(which I have no idea whether or not there's a rose species for that common shape) and also the petals curl down and form semi-triangular shapes.

Light pink roses convey a sense of femininity, grace, and comfort. They convey gratitude and sympathy.

Perhaps, like with Derrick, the pink rose symbolizes Penelope and Reynold's emotions towards each other. Gratitude towards him for believing her during the trial, and Reynold's comfort and sympathy towards his sister.

Pink is also the color Reynold is associated with: not just in his hair color, but also in promotional images as well.

For novel readers, we know that Reynold's affection indicator turned pink and that the colors share meaning with rose colors(at least speculated to be so).

Callisto Regulus: Red Roses

Again, as with Reynold's section, roses are ubiquitous and have many different meanings. I'm not sure about the rose variety, but they look to be the same 3D asset.

However, I would like to take a shot in the dark and say the red roses in his panel are Chrysler Imperial Roses or Super Hero Roses.

Chrysler Imperial Roses I chose for the way their blooms are tight with the outer petals being looser and curling in to form triangular petals. They are said to have thick stems with noticeable thorns.

Super Hero Roses are not as tight, but share the triangular petal curls and have bright oval-shaped leaves. They also look very overexposed when photographed because of their brightness.

Unlike Reynold's pink roses, Callisto's red blooms are seen with rose thorns, something that was overlaid with Eckles' introduction in the beginning chapters of the manhwa, denoting his danger.

Red roses symbolize love, passion, commitment, faithfulness, and loyalty. They denote reciprocated romantic love and a strong relationship.

Unlike Reynold, I think Callisto's roses are mostly his feelings towards Penelope, and no, I'm not saying this as a Callisto main.

Throughout the story and in the future of the manhwa, Callisto is steadfast in his loyalty to Penelope, committed and faithful to his love for her. Of course, those who have read the novel also know that Callisto is the endgame ML, and his gauge color becomes red.

(I'm sorry I somehow wrote so much for Callisto even though he was supposed to have the least— Reynold already had the explanation about roses)

Winter Verdandi: Wisteria

Wisteria is a vining shrub and member of the pea family. They can come in various shades of purple, white, or red. They can have many different meanings, but symbolize romance in the cultures where they are native.

It's seen as a symbol of everlasting wisdom because they can grow for over a century, and their sprawling vines represent the continual search for knowledge.

Mauve wisteria means "passion, hidden beauty, intellect and wit, and devotion".

Lavender wisteria conveys "delicateness, refinement, grace, wealth, and royalty."

White wisteria, which can be seen in the panel, implies "healing, purity, health, youth, rebirth, and mourning."

In Korea, wisteria symbolizes a devotion that transcends death.

In VADD, Winter has a secret identity as an information broker and a wizard. The continual search for knowledge and eternal wisdom is something that is characteristic of Winter. He's also one of the most refined and gentlemanly of the MLs.

Fans of the novel will know that Winter rewound time and is the cause for the time loops, all to let the original Penelope have another chance at defeating Leila.

The white wisteria may primarily mean "rebirth", tying back into the time loop that he created.

Akabane Karma in the official character book, p. 1-2 translation

I haven't done these for a long while, but the mood suddenly struck me. I know that Karma's pages have already been translated, so in a sense this is kind of pointless, but I still wanted to do this. I mean, I did Gakushuu's part ages ago (or that's how it feels, anyway), and as they're fighting for the #1 spot for me (isn't that just fitting?), I kind of felt like I had to do Karma too. So, here we go!

As usual, I mainly did this to practice Japanese, and there might be mistakes... though this time I could check if I was in agreement with the other translation when I was unsure about something, so there shouldn't be anything too bad. XD Early on there's one sentence that totally baffled me, tho... My comments are in [brackets].

“I won’t lose. The one to take sensei’s life is me.”

Having tasted defeat, Karma came to understand the feelings of those who lose and learned to sympathize with his companions and got closer to the weak.

(The manga panel is from when he told the Big 5 that he was the only one in 3 E who’d taken the 2nd mid-term exam seriously.)

Chuunibyous tend to take an unexpected look at things. In Karma’s case… [...I became completely confused. Something like taking an unexpected look on unexpected look on even further on an unexpected look… I’ve no idea. If anyone can give me a sensible translation of アイツの場合斜め上の更に斜め上のそのまた斜め上から見てんだけど結局１つ上にはいけてないのよ please do. ^^ It’s very 斜め上, that’s all I can say. The other translation didn't give a literal translation of this either, just this: “a person with Chuunibyou is supposed to see things a certain way, but because he’s doing it in a half-assed way, she’s basically calling him a half-assed Chuunibyou”]

[Chuunibyou, in case you’re not familiar with the term, means a teenager with grandiose delusions who tries to stand out in every way possible. Gundham Tanaka, anyone? <;3 It literally translates to “second-year syndrome” (second year of junior high, that is). The -ban in Chuuniban means half, so yeah…. half-assed chuunibyou.]

He was a little lacking in serious attitude, but that changed during the summer break. His combat ability is at the top of E class, and he has good intuition and learning ability.

Post floating round on here, couple of them actually they go different ways but start the same. With pointing out the western idea of what Africa looks like is wrong and racist.

Mexico City couldn't keep all its old traditions alive, had to get rid of that temple in the middle of town where they did the human sacrifices and such, still shows up in their artwork tho.

A lot of these places where they do that it's connected to whatever the faith of the people is, it's 'sacred' architecture, not a hard and fast rule but you'll see it if you look in a lot of places. They also tend to be very homogeneous populations where that happens, be why in the US that just ain't happening. Japan on the other hand.....

This is one of those things that tend to get black Americans to expose their own anti-blackness, because often times I see the comments made about actual Africans after a thing like this pops up and the entitled children come out of the woodwork with any and every reason why it's tottaly different when they do that.

There's some nice information in there, some countries in West Africa have made a industry out of black Americans returning to the motherland and are making a fair deal of money out of it, which depending on the history of that country they may be double dipping since they got the money when they sold their ancestors too.

Still can't find what I was looking for, some IG "model" flaunting herself in the middle of the dirt road in a African village with her fancy shiny new "authentic" clothes with a good portion of the folks that actually live there giving her either bewildered or annoyed looks, reading their minds I can hear them all screaming 'just spend your money and go back to America please' in their heads.

J2 Main Panel Orlando Con 2022

During the Gold panel Jared was sweating buckets so for the Main panel staff put a fan on the floor which he was really happy about and whose idea was it for Jared to have that fan? I'm gonna leave y'all to form your own opinion but while he does not take direct credit when Jared noticed the fan on the floor Jensen tells him 'you're welcome' to which Jared happily replies 'I love you' so by logical deduction we can conclude that Mr. Ackles noticed his boy struggling with the heat and asked staff to provide a fan for the main panel. But like I said y'all from your own opinion x

And then Jared pointed out Jensen's new hair style cause of course he did, his man is looking hot he's gotta point it out x

Getting into the question portion of the panel kickin it off question number one is: Was there any particular scene or episode that was their favorite to shoot? Jared says every scene in Changing Channels, and in the case of the entire ep then French Mistake. Jensen says the Eye of the Tiger scene from Yellow Fever.

Jared mentions Jensen’s working with Phil Sgriccia again who directed that ep, and Jensen jokes to do more music videos because he also directed the Soldier Boy Solid Gold stuff and he teases there is a Robert Mitchum number that’s coming up. I'm excited to see that x

If they could have a superpower what would it be? Jensen says he’s been getting asked this question a lot at The Boys press junkets and he’s heard a variety of answers and explanations but he keeps landing back with flying. Every other power has repercussions; he feels like flying is pure and simple. Jared says he would like to swim like a fish because he’s fascinated with our oceans. That Jensen will take care of the sky and he’ll take care of the water. Even in answers about superpowers they’re such partners 💗

Was there a season, storyline, or episode that they did not expect to be a fan favorite and were surprised when people liked it? Angels. Jared says he and Jensen didn’t want the show to turn too political or religious because it’s not about religion. Then they started touching upon the theme with eps like Houses of the Holy and then s4 happened and the character of C was introduced and they were wondering if that was going to turn off the demo that wasn’t into religion. And they were assured that it wasn't about religion it was an expansion of the universe. Jensen says something they were able to do on the show was take risks and swing for the fences and a lot of the time it was well received.

Then. In the year of 2022. Jared did not miss the opportunity to bring back referring to G as a demon saying he married a demon. But now Jensen gets to jump in on the fun and says he married an angel. Which makes Jared let out a weird laugh and say his demon is really an angel in real life. And without missing a beat or opportunity very helpfully provided Jensen says "and mine's really a demon in real life." And then they laugh. Without a second thought they both took a shot at D and G. All I'mma say is that many a true word is said in jest ☕

Continuing on a fans English teacher is a fan of the show and really likes Dean a lot and they asked the fan if they could ask Jensen to call him a Bitch. So Jensen did 😂

They go from an easy question to a very difficult one. Of all the questions they’ve ever been asked, what would they answer differently? The boys have no idea how to answer this, they are struggling so the fan changes the question. Has something they said ever been taken out of context and they didn't like it? Jensen replies, "oh yeah, that happens quite a bit." Jared says yes but he doesn't not like it, he understands that communication is difficult. He likes exploring ideas and thoughts and talking things out, and he doesn't get offended by other people's speech because maybe that's what they're feeling or exploring and he hopes he gets the same forgiveness. That sometimes when getting asked questions it's difficult to express yourself the way you'd like to; Jensen answers that they get asked probably more questions about themselves and about their work than most people do, and some of those questions are similar or repeated so they often give similar answers but as they have grown in their own lives as well as professionals those answers have also evolved. x

What is their ultimate favorite prank they’ve pulled and who is it on? The irony of them getting this question right after Jensen makes a comment about repetitive questions but anyways Jensen says a thing to know about him and Jared is that their pranks are not planned in advance, they see the opportunity and take it.

But there were pranks done to them in the past and a memorable one that's one of his favorites was when they had to climb down a manhole that had been built on the sound stage so when they got to the bottom it was closed it was like a 15 to 20 feet hole with a ladder so they climb down and after them came gallons of water. Kim Manners was the mastermind behind it, he had already gotten the shot he needed but he told them he needed another one and the whole crew was in on it to fill up giant buckets of water and drench them; and this thing was planned in advance, one of the crew members made sure to get Jensen's phone out of his pocket and they made an appointment for Jared because he had a cast on at the time so they made him an appointment in advance so he could get his cast changed for a dry one. Afterwards they spent like 10mins chasing Kim Manners around the set till they caught him and put him in a puddle of water and dragged him around. x

If there was a British adaptation of SPN who would they want playing them? Jensen says Tom Hardy. Jared says Benedict Cumberbatch. x

Jensen was asked about the Winchesters. The fan is excited for the character of Carlos and asks was it important for him to see that representation right from the start? And what is he most excited to see? He says yes, and Robbie did a great job on the character adding some amazing details and nuance that the actor who plays the role, Jojo, was able to do tremendous with; what he’s excited to see is what the fans think of the twists. That somebody told him during a meet and greet the day before that John didn’t know about hunting until Mary died and he replied that he’s well aware. That they're not tossing away 15yrs of story just how they're gonna get to it may not be what fans are expecting. I don't believe you sir. x

What’s the best part for them about being dads? Jared jokes going to conventions away from them. Jesus, Jared 😅 Then he gives his real answer which is rediscovering stuff, his kids make him appreaciate the little things and helping guide them as they discover things. Jensen says unprovoked I love yous, that his kiddos will randomly tell him I love you and Arrow will jump into his arms and give him a big hug and then cup his face and say "I love you, daddy" and then run off. x

Before they move on to the next question Jared says I love you to Jensen because of what he just said about unprompted I love yous and somebody in the crowd says "he's not your daddy" 💀

I need ya'll to see those mens reactions because Jared is just like 'I'm not doing that one' and Jensen with all seriousness turns around and is like 'what was that?' and Jared is literally like 'no, no, no' and turns him around. Jensen was fully ready to play with fire and Jared did not let him 😂

Anyways, do they have funny stories about their pets? Jensen says he only has one pet a 16 year old, part blind mostly deaf 20-ish pound mutt and watching him now is both sad and entertaining because he runs into walls not full force just bumps into them. And he'll also just stare at his bowls, he'll go back and forth between staring at his water and kibble and then walk away, and Jensen doesn't know if he knows what he's doing cause he also has full blown dementia as well but as soon as he picks him he knows it's him, and he'll burrow his face into his neck and he knows its his dad 😭

Jared says Arlo is a trained service dog for anxiety for him, he has been trained for Jared and that he has helped with his nail biting because part of his training is to get him to stop doing that but that Arlo also easily gets stressed out so they joke that he's the only therapy dog that needs therapy. x

When he's talking about his nail biting Jared says Jensen also stops him, and I wanna point out a moment from a con last year that I had not noticed originally it just came to my attention now. But last year during one of the virtual cons that the boys did there's a moment where Jared starts biting his nail and when Jensen notices he knocks on the table infront of him and Jared just immediately stops. Husbands husbanding x

How do they feel going into the sets for The Boys and Walker after SPN ended, and the characters they're playing? Jared says that it would have been really difficult to quicly jump from spn to working on Walker but because of the shutdown he had time to develop and prepare for the show but also his character, and it was strange at first but he's done so much work in the industry that it was like a fish to water just a different ocean.

Jensen says he had a lot less on his plate than Jared did because they had been co-captains for years and now suddenly Jared was gonna be solo captain of a new ship and he doesn't know many people in their profession personally that is more equipped than Jared to that job and he's doing it now with grace and dignity and talent and success. That's lovely Jensen ❤️

Says he had a little less of an order, he was going into a very welcoming home. He didn't feel the preassure to prove himself but he did put the pressure on himself to not drop the ball and to earn his keep, so he did his best and stuck to what he knew and was comfortable with and was able to befriend the cast and the crew. But it was interesting cause it definetely wasn't spn, and he definetely did not have his co-captain there to help him and help guide him through what could have been rough waters. Luckily he made friends pretty quickly and it was a very welcoming crew. Mentions again that Antony Starr confessed to him that he was prepared not to like him but now he really likes him. x

What were some of the more memorable locations they filmed at? They mention places like Squamish, Bordertown, Riverview hospitals which they referred to as Stage 4 because of how often they filmed there, boundary bay which had the crossroads. Jared says he thinks the set he misses the most is the waterfront in Squamish because it was so beautiful. Jensen mentions the church from Sacrifice, that church was surrounded by a large tidal lake so the water rises and lowers and he found it very picturesque. Then when they went to film it was all covered with fog and it was raining, and they had to film the scene of the angels falling down so they were getting drenched and having to look up into the freezing rain 😆

Question for Jensen, how is it the same and how is it different working with Kripke again after so many years? He says there were a lot of similarities and familiarity because they kept in contact with Kripke over the years and he and Jared have remained good friends with the man so when the time came to work together again Jensen felt a comfortable familiriaty that gave him some confidence he probably wouldn't have had in a situation like this but at the same time it was different because the whole thing was bigger. He calls it Kripke unleashed, it's everything he couldn't do on network television. x

Last question! What got Jensen into voice acting? And would Jared do it again? Jensen says what got him into it was that he was given the opportunity. That getting into that genre is difficult but once you get your foot in the door the hard part is over and you get to enjoy doing these roles and it's a lot of fun and different from the on camera work. He just did another voice over project two weeks ago, and it's something he'll continue doing as long as they continue to ask.

Jared replies that he enjoys voice acting to a degree. That with the SPN anime and with Phantom Boy those projects were already done and animated in a foreign language, and then they attempt to translate what's said to English and have the actor say some version of what they were trying to say and it was a nightmare. But he'd do something like Scoobynatural any time because it was them acting together and the animation was done later to match them not him having to match what was already done so he would do it again some time. Jared, my love the part of voice acting you don't like is dubbing. x

People...I made a think, im extremely ashamed of myself for this one.

When you see this, many questions will come to mind, first of all why.

(Read underneath if you want to know why)

(Ended uploiding the comic in other post so you actually dont need to read this, just do if you're comfortable with a guy complaining about himself)

Now the rant of hate to my own child. EHEM.

To begin with; why does the first panel look totally diferent to the other ones? Easy, I start this when I was better in the head, actually I started this comic at the same time that my last drawing of Louise and Rudy, the rest I did it since friday and spent 4 days trying to do something with it... but this is the only thing that came out. Sorry

Second. Why the colors?... I truly dont know, I started with the regular palette (got it?) but then decided I wanted to try new things, tried to do shit that pros do with weird color palettess, I forget that my knowledge of color theory is limited to complementary colors so a don't have any idea of what this disaster is (in an early version there was a smurf rudy, imagine)

Somenthing similar happens with the lineart, trying to do new things, the gods nows why 😩

Also get creative with the panels, there's an early version, that I have the intention to uploud that was way more simple, I dont know why I didnt went with that one. Maybe because I hate myself.

Ending this sad parade of excuses I have to say, Im not happy with the result, but... I really want it to do this good, I like this comic in my head, since Im a kid I loved to draw comics like crazy, I would like to go back to that. So this is my first step, its not perfect but is a start.

Bare with me, I know is hard, I have to do it daily.

Tenko's scratching noise

One thing I decided to do while retranslating chapters is trying to understand what sounds mean what in original, not in translation So yeah I didn't see anyone commenting on it and I don't have enough knowledge on it

But at the start of chapter 235 sound of his scratching is a little bit different both at introduction panel and when he was talking to Nao

but that's about it after that or before that, in later chronological flashbacks and earlier in manga sound of scratching was a little bit different

and I have no idea why old one returns at the time when Tenko's quirk activated for the first time

this to be exact

Maybe Decay really does connect to any of strong emotions Tenko has either good or bad, it's just that AFO is bad oriented person

it never really comes back again

But from what I understood first one is a little bit different and probably a little bit softer that second one

And that actually reflects on how Tenko did start scratching a little bit harder at some point and just stayed that way

It's kinda sad that it doesn't translate into English with at least some difference they are just identical

and yes in both Manga Plus and final version

tho final version tries harder to replace sounds

so yeah they're different

What’s your fannish ID? EmeraldStorm on AO3 and @emeraldstorms on tumblr. The origin is not that spectacular. Dark Green is my fave colour and "emerald" sounds fancier than "dark green". And "storm" is simply a cool word. xD

What types of fanworks do you create? Mainly I write, but I have started drawing digital images for different fandoms. Sometimes I make shippy edits of old comic panels because I can.

What are your favourite types of fanworks, when you’re not creating? I love reading shippy long fics! Don't get me wrong. I love a one-shot, sweet, smutty or both, too. I love fanart! But losing myself in a long story with a slow burn romance that makes me experience that second hand pining fully - amazing!

What do you like in particular about this fandom? For one, surely the possibilities that come with a secret identity. But I particularly love the relationship between Matt Murdock and Foggy Nelson: the love, the loyalty, the fact that they may drift apart, but always gravitate towards each other sooner or later. Whether or not you read this romantically, it's something I truly enjoy.

Do you like participating in fan events? I haven't yet participated in DD events, but in other fandoms I did. I like it a lot because you get to exchange ideas with other fans who love what you love. Plus, it really motivates me to get my stories written.

What about your creating process? The cats aren't really optional for me. As soon as I sit down, there are two of them joining me. Otherwise, it's a mess of dozens of open documents, several messy handwritten post-its and too much coffee and snacks. The noise-level doesn't really matter. I have written thousands of words in a loud cafe on some days and got nothing done in a perfectly quiet room on other days.

Do you interact a lot with other fans? I talk a lot to other DD fans on discord (I'm Calandraa#6358) and I really love sharing the enthusiasm. But, the more the merrier so if someone wants to collab, brainstorm or simply chat, they can message me on tumblr. :)

Is there any particular piece you'd like to showcase for this post? That was a though decision. But I decided for "Because the night belongs to us", https://archiveofourown.org/works/35689132/chapters/88986115 , a Daredevil/Defenders fic (explicit, be warned). I picked it because it has vampires!

Do you have other fandoms you'd like to talk about? I'm active in the Good Omens fandom, semi-active in the TMNT fandom and - while inactive in the fandom - am still a huge Ghostbusters fan. Not sure if there are significant similarities, except that I like them. But yeah, if anyone wants to talk about those, they can hit me up, too. :)

Hope you don't mind me asking, but as I've seen you have access to the Japanese version of the manga, do you also have access to the Japanese versions of the bleach data books? I ask because I've wondered how accurately viz media translated them given how they can be off the mark with the manga. Have a nice day!

Short answer: Yes, we do! But we use them as reference works, parachuting into whatever section we need, rather than reading them cover to cover. (lol I say this as though this is somehow different than how we use the manga)

B3-size answer: I don't personally bear the Viz translations any ill will! Sometimes it's silly, or imprecise, but also often charming and creative. I feel like a lot of the English-speaking fandom has probably sampled from both the Viz and various fan scanlations, each with their own flavor, and our English-speaking fandom owes a lot to all of these translations. The plot is still the plot and more importantly, the characters are still the characters--and if these things can carry into English-language fanworks that display all the nuance and beauty that are these characters' just deserts, then that's a translator’s job well done.

The Viz translation team also has much better Japanese than either of us do. We do not actually speak this language. We have a smattering of HS language classes from the distant past, some experience with translation theory, and well-developed research skills in a trenchcoat. But most of that trenchcoat is still filled out by our extreme and deeply inefficient hyperfixation on Bleach. So we'll sit and linger over the poesy of Aizen's taunts, or think about lines in the context of canon established 100 pages prior, or spend time wordsmithing the EXACT register we think our blorbos would strike. We derive a lot of pleasure from spending infinite time working through literary translations of their insensate yelling in the same way a fan artist might lovingly learn their body language or proportions.

Which is probably not true of the Viz translators, by and large, who have deadlines and probably too much work to do and almost certainly don't get paid enough to go all "Shakespeare is more beautiful in the original Klingon" on every random bubble. (Which is not to say that we are doing anything beautiful, LOL. We don't speak this language! Just have blorbovision.) It’s a different kind of project.

Do I think that sometimes the Viz translations would have benefitted from a script supervisor to keep track of continuity? Sure. But they probably aren't paying one! WHATTUP CAPITALISM.

I think that goes double-true of the databooks, which to us might be holy biblical apocrypha but to Viz are appendices. Second fiddle stuff. So there's a lot of typos, lol. And I'm sure if one were to read them over, a lot of things that don't feel *quite* right because the translator isn't a cave-dwelling Tumblrina thinking about 20-year old manga all day.

To give you an idea of the kinds of inconsistencies we're talking about, I broke out my English copy of the SOULs character data book and a quick perusal revealed some things like:

--Ishida Ryuuken is referred to as both "Ryûgen" and "Ryûken" interchangeably, depending on the page.

--Renji and Byakuya share a data page, and their birthdays are switched on the info panels.

--There's a single paragraph in which Hinamori is referred to as both Hinamori and Momo, which just feels like someone was very rushed and did not proof for consistency.

These mistakes aren't in the JP version, as far as I can tell. But also, I don't think these things bother the typical Bleach fan as much as they bother me (nor are they mistakes that are important overall).

Maya Brasington “Water Between Us”

I understand "water between us" is a photo essay exploring heritage and family relations. When and how did this begin?

Maya: Water Between Us came into development in September 2022, and acts as a following conversation from a previous body of work entitled Dandelion Milk; my first work to confront ideas of heritage and family. I tend to describe Dandelion Milk as examining my conception of Englishness and self – strongly focused upon my rural upbringing. With Water Between Us, I work to reframe these previous questions of Englishness and identity, emphasizing the inherent complexity, and emotional journey of understanding oneself – particularly as a mixed-race woman. The work has become a vessel for retelling and re-imagining how my maternal side of the family came to be and navigating our mixed identities. Whilst deeply personal, the work simultaneously discusses wider themes of the Caribbean diaspora of the 1960s and the importance of image for those of diasporic backgrounds.

Is identity something that's always informed your photographic work? and has this project developed your understanding of self in any way?

Maya: I’ve always been interested in the human condition as a whole and tend to find my own experiences of my identity fueling my artistic practice. This being said Water Between Us is only the second project in which I have directly considered my relationship with racial identity and heritage, and how it has developed as I’ve grown older. It’s been a very cathartic experience to begin to address and examine my understanding of my mixed identity, which for a long time remained a very untouched subject – especially in my creative practice. Throughout this project, I feel not only has my relationship with my heritage developed, but I believe my relationships with my maternal family have strengthened through this experience of sharing and remembering.

How does the power of photography, its processes and format work for your questions and curiosity in regard to this body of work?

Maya: The process of creation and materiality of the photographic image is so important to my practice. Photographs have long been regarded as objects of evidence, of truth – thus, in the endeavour to discover and understand oneself, photography becomes a key to unravelling histories. Much of my practice seeks to re-contextualize the past via appropriation and re-imagining of the vernacular image to bring forth figures previously diluted, displaced and erased within the family archive, and within the wider context of ‘the archive’ and commonplace image.

The archival image is a pillar of Water Between Us - it’s through the haptic nature of these photographs that I draw a relationship with those whom I never met, a place I never visited, a time I never saw. The image becomes an object that preserves time and allows the distance between myself and my predecessors to almost fade away, the anonymous fingerprints that remain on an image merging with my own. I have found in the same way I can build physical connections with those no longer here, the handling and sharing of photographs have provided a platform for new conversation and discovery within my family. Not only has the body of work developed into a method for speaking to family, but the research process has become the work itself.

The project was displayed in a group show at your University at Falmouth. What was included in the project's presentation and how did you come to curate it in this way?

Maya: This was the first time I had actualized Water Between Us into a physical space as opposed to its primary form as a book, therefore, I wanted to use the opportunity of the show In Passing to illustrate the breadth of the project. Throughout the development of this work, I found photography alone was not able to wholly relay the importance of the haptic experience. The installation incorporates a mix of archival images, a stained-glass panel, a triptych of photographs and the final Water Between Us book. All parts work together to create a sense of navigation and collection of evidence which is still perhaps fragmented. It was important to me that viewers could physically confront and share the reality of my experience of interrogating these precious items with little other information.

Central to the installation is a stained-glass panel from the 1960s depicting the Serenity Prayer; the only remaining possession I have found of my great-grandmother's. In this new context, the prayer inscribed on the glass takes on multiple meanings, suggesting my great-grandmother's connection with God and her strength of character, all the while, the prayer acts as an affirmation to myself in my evaluation of self-identity and search for lost connections. An image couldn't elicit the same emotional and physical response as an object as delicate as this, and I love how the visual relationship is built between the triptych which floats above - depicting my mother, great-grandmother, and an overturned frame. Together the images and panel signify the tenderness of motherhood coupled with the delicacy of loss - centring the viewer, to watch them coexist.

What's next?

Maya: I’m currently working on a new body of work centred around the important roles of imagination and memory in exploring family narratives and cultural identity, particularly when one is a descendant of immigrants. I am particularly excited to be showing this work in both my degree shows at Falmouth University, and at Free Range 2023. After completing my degree, I hope to continue my research and practice into ideas of cultural identity, and whilst my works currently exist as individual enquiries, I would love to begin to collate them into a larger body which brings all the concurrent ideas together.

Pitou’s gender doesn’t need to matter

note: the pronoun ‘it’ is used to indicate Pitou throughout this whole post

Before beginning, I would like to clarify that when I say Pitou’s gender doesn’t need to matter, I mean it. I say this because of the canon proofs sprinkled throughout the story and NOT because I’m saying this out of my opinion.

From being considered a fan favourite and the most hated character above them all, it is no secret that Pitou has touched the hearts of many whether negatively or positively.

Believing that there is an equal amount of appreciation and hate for the character, fans would often try to wonder and guess the only thing unclear about the cat ant: its gender. Many have considered the cat to be female, while some who lean more into the manga would assume it to be male and others would simply come to the conclusion that it is non-binary due to the vague anatomy of the royal guard.

There seem to be lots of ideas and possibilities surrounding Pitou’s gender and fans would often believe that there can only be one answer to this question.

Which is true but not in the way you would expect.

The anime, manga and even the mobage cards have depicted Pitou’s gender in different ways.

The anime chose to make people address Pitou as a female and portray it by accentuating the ant’s torso and hips to make the body look more feminine.

The HxH Battle Collection cards used the same method with the addition of making it wear girl clothes.

The manga on the other hand makes Pitou be addressed as a male but doesn’t bother giving any noticeable features to the body.

But despite this, the manga also moves Pitou into female roles. The first example is when Togashi put the ant cat as a female by drawing a sort of re-enactment of Diego Velázquez’s famous painting called “Coronation of the Virgin” (1644) by replacing God’s mother Mary, a woman, with Pitou on the 28th volume cover of the manga.

The second example is when Pitou is compared to a real cat mother by Killua when he sees it making a stance to protect the injured Komugi from Gon.

Togashi’s way of presenting characters in his works has always been a great strategy to confuse some fans about certain characters.

Good examples of these would have to be characters like Kurapika, Kalluto, and of course Pitou. But the difference between the cat and the other two is a huge one.

Being an androgynous bishōnen like Kurapika and Kalluto means being a boy but looking partly female and partly male. Both already have a definite gender and yet they look like the opposite gender. Or in other words, their looks are what makes them “pretty boys”.

While the others have a reason to make you stop and think about whether they’re female or male due to their looks, Pitou on the other hand does not fall into any category or label.

It has nothing. It is simply a blank slate.

Based on the hxh data book, Pitou uses the pronoun “kare” which means “he” in English. It also uses the pronoun “boku” known as “I” in English which is mainly used by boys and young men.

However, even though Pitou may use male pronouns, its body doesn’t show us distinct male or even female parts in the manga.

Many would think we did see it naked once if we look at this specific panel shot of Pitou flexing its muscles.

But while this may have been good proof that Pitou may have a gender after all at first glance, it is unfortunately not the case. If this was Pitou’s real naked form, we would’ve been able to see its knees and arms’ specific physical patterns since they are part of its body but we don’t which means this is supposed to be a comparison between Pitou and a real cat.

The HxH manga is the canon source for all things related to HxH and if we want a direct answer to our question, then it should only make sense that we all depend on what the manga has to say about Pitou. But when we take into consideration that the manga itself also plays with Pitou’s gender, if all the manga does is make Pitou look physically neutral but makes people address the ant cat with he/him pronouns, and take female/male roles, then this means that Pitou doesn’t have any gender or even specific anatomy.

Due to the many numerous proofs, the manga is more than clearly fine with making fans choose one for the ant.

However, Pitou’s case shouldn’t be mixed with bishōnen androgynous characters such as Kurapika and Kalluto.

They are there to trick you with gender. Pitou on the other hand plays with gender. It doesn’t want you to guess if it is canonically female or male but simply wants you to portray it the way you want to.

Think of Pitou as a naked male doll. Usually, male dolls do not have defined and detailed physical traits. Unlike the “naked” form we assumed of Pitou in that one panel, a male doll’s body is exactly how Pitou would look with no clothes on.

So go ahead and believe what you want to believe.

Pitou’s canonical gender is literally nothing and anything.

It’s up to you.

Pitou is truly a blank canvas brought here by Togashi for us to paint whatever we want on it.

Its reason for being what it is is such an anomaly that even its name mixes both genders to not give any place to only one gender.

The first part of Neferpitou’s name “Nefer” comes from a male Egyptian god by the name of “Nefertem” and the second part “pitou” comes from a female panther that belongs to a French children's book series called “Caroline et ses Amis”.

NARUTO BRAINROTTING ABOUT SASUKE

As you can see... Naruto is totally brainrotting about Sasuke here... This is after Sasuke retrieval arc. Am telling you, if any of my friend did something like Sasuke, I would've totally given up at this point. But Naruto is seen pining for Sasuke and depressed.

There's nothing special here. It could be totally friendly or brotherly.

But what follows is where the ambiguousness increased million fold.

Here Naruto says, “Jeez… And I was devising a plan for the two of go on a walk, almost like a date!”

First of all, Naruto never makes any plans…. He always approach anything what his heart leads him to…

Second of all, Nobody asked him what he was doing!!!!

Third off, He is lying !!!!

God!! He was totally brainrotting about Sasuke, just a moment ago and now he is lying about devising a date with Sakura….

I mean we all lie at some point about what we really feel because we don’t want others to know what’s going on in our mind. I did it many times too. But I never once misdirected my feelings to replace it with another feelings..

This behaviour is very similar to People constantly pining over their broken First Love, then they could never move on from it… then in order to divert this feeling they try to flirt/bond with someone else on whom they never really interested in.

My point is if Naruto really considered Sasuke as a Brother or a Friend, he never needed to lie. He could openly admit it that, “Just now, I was thinking about Sasuke… About how to save him… I have this idea…”. But lying makes it even more ambiguous and more evident that he loves Sasuke… But not in a brotherly way. Somehow, in his mind, he got this feeling that “He should not like a Boy, in ‘that way’”…. That’s why he was lying…

Or Kishimoto could’ve easily made this into another Bedroom Rant… Why specifically outdoors and spend a whole page to show that he was diverting his thoughts from Sasuke to Sakura…???

Now, you all can claim that Naruto lied because he didn’t want Sakura to worry over Sasuke’s safety… Well, if that’s the case,

He simply could’ve let Sakura ask the question, “What are you doing Naruto?”… And he could’ve answered, “It’s nothing…. What are you guys upto?”…. But here Naruto himself is bringing up a Dating topic… It’s very similar to rather than letting someone interrogating you like, “Are you lying to me?”….. You went one step ahead and voluntarily say, “I am not Lying” without the other person asking you the question…

If he needed to lie, he could spout something, else… Why lie about being interested in a girl when he was clearly interested in a Boy???

SAME FEELINGS, REVERSE SCRIPT

It’s technically not a Date… But this scene still qualifies under the Date….

So, here Naruto was seen having his lone moment with Sakura, that moment he always wanted. If I am with a person whom I have certain feelings for and if that person is taking care of me… Won’t I be flying back between Heaven and Earth??

Atleast this panel suggest something like that…

“I’ll be fine as long as you heal it… But this kind of makes me happy..”

And we all be like… Naruto is looking at her with a warm Gaze ….Oh!!! NaruSaku moment is gonna happen…. Now let’s turn over the next page and we find…

Pooof!!!!! He is bringing up Sasuke here!!!! ROFL

"It feels like we're getting closer to Sasuke, Together"....

In the previous scenario, Naruto was constantly thinking about Sasuke and in order to divert it, he started to flirt with Sakura. Now he had every opportunity to flirt with Sakura and he reverts back to Sasuke again....

Why Naruto is trying to avert his thoughts away from Sasuke and at the same time couldn't stop obsessing about him???

Very Ambiguous!!!!

AMBIGUOUS POSTURE

Kishimoto spent 4 panels to convey the same action... That is, Naruto holding Sasuke and crying for him... But it’s very ambiguous whether Naruto leans on Sasuke’s face or Sasuke’s chest..... But one thing for sure... Naruto really loved Sasuke eventhough he never showed openly until that point.

Whereas Sakura was also seen crying in a similar posture like Naruto... But it was just given only 1 panel... Tbh, Naruto’s panels were little more Ambiguous...

Why to give just 1 panel for a hetero pair... whereas emphasize Naruto’s gesture for 4 panels??? Oh, before anyone calling them as brothers....

This is how Brothers would hold each other and cry for them.. Naruto’s gesture was definitely neither ‘brotherly’ nor ‘friendly’.. Just saying....

WHAT’S REALLY HAPPENING???

Another ambiguous scene but this time, it’s from Sasuke, which made me shout “What’s really going on?” ....This scene always reminds me of Spiderman’s famous upside down kiss.

Am not saying he was going to kiss Naruto.... But there was no need for Sasuke to go that close to Naruto’s face either if he just consider him as friend. However, One thing is very evident.... Sasuke was just being honest with himself and he loves Naruto... That’s why he couldn’t kill him here.

So, yeah....

These are all the Ambiguous SNS moments and all of them are the outcomes of extremely repressed feelings they have for each other. Meaning, they really want to deny the thought of liking or be close to each other ... But in the long run, they couldn’t. In some way or form, those feelings just come out unconsciously....
