So I've finally visited Mom
This month I've finally arrived to Kish village to visit mom and celebrate there my Birth Day.
As I was away, mom changed her Skoda Octavia to Mitsubisi as it's more usefull in local off-roads and mountain roads. Interestingly, the car still has a lot of inscriptions in Japanese.

Most of the days, the weather was foggy, so I couldn't make a proper pictures with my retro Fujifilm x100
Tumblr media Tumblr media
However, I was happy to see design updates to our family cafe. My mum added tiles outside to protect the lower part of the walls from water, and she also refurbished the furniture on the side of the bar in an oriental style, which gives off a nice ethnic vibe and cosiness.

We eventually celebrated my birthday at a restaurant in the neighbouring town of Sheki. I enjoyed stunning views of the Greater Caucasus Mountains until I left.

Our new kitchen is ready!
After several months (with a gap in works due to bad weather) we have complete construction of our new kitchen in the backyard.
Tumblr media
Of course, we would make the floors in front of the kitchen more properly, and choose a lamp, but those are things we would make during a more warm season. This week we're having snowy days in the vilalge.
Although today, it's became sunny again.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Glad to see another accomplishment, though it was not a simple one.

..and it was finally aired today!
We'll be on TV soon!
In mid-October, my mom was visited by a team from the itv channel who wanted to film an episode of a gardening show at our hotel.
Certanly we've been excited by that, and the shooting went quite smoothly, and we were promised the issue would be out within a month.
Finally, I was delighted this morning to see the announcement of a new episode featuring my mom.
Small note: itv is the channel that hosts the Eurovision qualifying competition and broadcasts the Eurovision Song Contest.
P.S. Photo after the shoot. Mom treated the crew to a specialty Kish plov.

Ağac kişi. Spirit of mountain forests.
Tumblr media
Post written by Anar Turangi Read also: The Forgotten Legend of Unugai
He awoke to the gentle whispers emanating from his garden.
"Here we go again" he grumbled, as it wasn't the first time such noises had disturbed his peace. This had started about a month after his only son was sent away for service in distant lands. On most such occasions, he would look out into the inky void through the window, discern nothing, and then retreat to the embrace of his bed, surrendering to the lull of sleep. But tonight, an ember of curiosity flared within him, pulling him out of his warm covers. He ignited a kerosene lamp, and with a revolver by his side as a precaution, ventured into the garden.
Tonight, there was an uncommon luminosity in the garden, a gift from the radiant moon. His skepticism briefly flirted with a realm of childhood tales, tales of elusive creatures that prowled beneath the full moon's luminous gaze.
As he strolled through the garden, a human figure gradually materialized from the obscurity. Its face remained concealed, obscured by tattered rags. This enigmatic silhouette carried a small sack, diligently collecting apples and various fruits.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"A vagabond, a thief!" the master of the house concluded, lifting his revolver and proclaiming in a commanding tone, "Halt, you scoundrel, or I shall fire!"
The man pivoted swiftly, his dull yellow eyes flashing, and with the grace of a wild creature, he ascended a tree and leaped over the fence. The homeowner's astonishment immobilized his trigger finger. However, in the blink of an eye, he recollected himself and, with a resolute cry of "Halt!" rushed after the intruder. Locking the door behind him, he hastened to the point where the trespasser had vanished. Naturally, the intruder was no longer present, leaving the man to scrutinize the footprints under the lamp's gentle glow. These were unusually large, unshod footprints. Before he could fully fathom this revelation, a neighbor, likewise armed with a dagger at his waist and a lamp in hand, arrived.
The man recounted the peculiar incident to his neighbor, and following a brief dialogue, they resolved to pursue the trail together. Recent proclamations by the local bey* had offered a substantial gold reward for the apprehension, dead or alive, of a thief whose description eerily matched the enigmatic figure that had appeared that evening. The exact nature of the vagabond's transgressions remained shrouded in mystery, but the bey was incensed. The two men resolved to divide the bounty equally.
*bey - a Turkic term applied to a noble man
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The homeowner carried a rope with him, while his neighbor enlisted the aid of his hunting dog. The canine swiftly detected the trail and guided them deeper into the forest, not far from their village.
They advanced in silence, endeavoring to remain inconspicuous. The dog led them to an oak tree, where discarded rags and a cache of fruit lay strewn about.
- Mustafa, - the neighbor addressed the homeowner, - it appears the dog has picked up the scent once more. Are you ready to proceed?
Mustafa replied tersely, - No. Don't you wonder why he left all this unguarded? I suspect the vagrant has gone somewhere and may return. In the best-case scenario, we shall ensnare him here.
- Your logic rings true. I shan't waste any time then. Should peril befall me, shout out, for if I believe your reasoning, I won't stray far.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The neighbor and his loyal canine departed, while Mustafa, extinguishing his lamp, concealed himself nearby, keeping vigilant watch over the abandoned possessions.
As moments slipped away, he allowed his mind to wander to thoughts of how he might employ his portion of the reward. Yet, an overpowering stench interrupted his daydreams. Could it truly emanate from those discarded rags? No, it seemed improbable at this distance!
The noxious odor intensified, making it arduous to breathe. He attempted to rise and distance himself but found his vision blurred and respiration increasingly labored. After taking a few faltering steps, he espied a tall figure draped in a cloak and hood, concealing part of its visage. The stranger tilted their head slightly, locking eyes with him, their irises a disconcerting shade of yellow. Struggling to summon a cry for help, Mustafa succumbed to dizziness and succumbed to unconsciousness.
Tumblr media
When he regained consciousness, he beheld the concerned countenance of his neighbor and the panting visage of the faithful hound. The neighbor explained that their timely arrival, and the dog's vociferous barking, had driven the intruder, or whatever entity it was, away from the unconscious man. However, the neighbor had been unable to apprehend the figure, who had vanished into the surrounding trees, as though a specter.
Upon their return to the village, the neighbor shared a suspicion with Mustafa that they had not encountered an ordinary vagabond thief, but the fabled Agach-kishi. A forest spirit known to purloin fruits and vegetables from the yards of unsuspecting villagers. Relief washed over the neighbor as they realized all was well. Back in the village, they both made their way home.
As Mustafa prepared for bed, he discovered an apple nestled in the generous pocket of his robe. An apple, akin to those from his garden. Or perhaps, it was an apple from his garden.
So, who is Ağac kişi?
Ağac kişi (Aghach kishi) or Meşə adamı in literal translation: 'Tree-Man' or 'Forest-Man.' This is a whimsical spirit of mountain forests, covered in fur and bearing a slight resemblance to a monkey. An intriguing character, as it also appears in the mythology of another neighboring Turkic-Caucasian people - the Balkars who reside in the North Caucasus.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Some scholars believe that the Agach-kishi is a local interpretation of the legend of the 'Snowman.' However, an encounter with it is unlikely to be pleasant. The forest man emits a terrible odor, and he enjoys trespassing into other people's gardens and borrowing unwanted clothing from humans. In the past, clothing was even left out specifically for him.
If we entertain the idea that the Agach kishi is, after all, a type of humanoid or Neanderthal, it becomes more intriguing. In a sense, its actions (such as stealing food from gardens or orchards) represent a form of nature's intrusion into human territory, once inhabited by different beings.

Upgrading our kitchen (day 1)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mom finally got an opportunity to upgrade our kitchen that is on the backside of the inn. Before that, the place was more like an open barn. Cooking there in the summer was not bad, but as the cold weather was approaching, we wanted to make this place into a full kitchen where we could cook at any time.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When the walls are finished, we will be able to install wooden window frames and a door preserved from this house. And then the roof frame will be cleared of unnecessary junk and we can remove the temporary iron columns. All that is left is to make a vent, and you can use the tandoor for cooking bread, flatbread, pilaf and other national dishes.

The Forgotten Legend of Unugai
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Post written by Anar Turangi
Imagine yourself as a traveller in ancient times, riding your horse through the hushed darkness of a graveyard. As expected, the cemetery lies still and empty in the late night hours. Suddenly, your attention is drawn to an unexpected sight—a stray goat perched by a gravestone.
While you were pondering, the goat has already made eye contact with you. You would like to look away, but something draws your gaze to the goat. In a bizarre twist, the goat rises onto its hind legs, its hooves rapidly growing in size, elevating it almost to human height. Without hesitation, the transformed goat rushes at you, lightning-fast covering the distance between you. The roar of the frightened horse brought you out of your daze and you tried to run away from the demonic creature, but it was faster. With astonishing agility, the creature leaps onto your horse and clings onto you from behind. The horse immediately weakened under the influence of the new rider, and so did you. With each passing second you feel your strength leaving you, and your resistance is futile.
However, the first rays of sunlight glimmered on the horizon, and the creature's grip began to weaken quickly. The colossal goat swiftly dismounts the horse and vanishes from your sight in the blink of an eye.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Once you come to your senses, you make your way to the nearest village, hoping to uncover an explanation for the harrowing encounter. You recount your story to the village elders, known as ağsaqqallar, who listen attentively.
After careful consideration, the elders identify the demonic creature that assaulted you last night as Unugai. The elders express sympathy for your plight, explaining that the limp you acquired from the incident will be joined by a speech impediment. The duration of these afflictions remains uncertain, leaving you with an unsettling sense of uncertainty.

AI art concepts of Unugai
Unugai, also known as Unuqai in Azerbaijani folklore, is a captivating and enigmatic entity. Its original manifestation takes the form of a lone stray goat that seeks solace amidst the eerie stillness of moonlit cemeteries. In these sacred grounds, it lies in wait, patiently selecting its prey from the ranks of solitary travelers who dare to lock eyes with its otherworldly gaze.
With an unsettling intent, Unugai often seeks to ensnare its chosen victim in an eerie embrace, a chilling touch that inflicts torment and sends shivers down the spine. The aftermath of such a sinister encounter often leaves the unfortunate traveler plagued by sickness, an affliction that manifests as an unsettling limp and an unsettling stutter.
As tales of Unugai weave through the tapestry of legends, whispers of its vulnerabilities emerge. The creature is rumored to cower in fear at the sight of iron needles and pins, particularly when aimed at its most vulnerable points—the fragile junctures where a well-placed needle can pierce the neck or the lumbar vein.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In more diabolical incarnations, Unugai preys upon pregnant women, luring them to the eerie embrace of the cemetery, where it snatches their unborn offspring for a gruesome feast.
The sunlit sanctuary Unugai retreats to during daylight remains an unsolved mystery. One can only speculate that it may visit its maternal figure, Al-Ana, a progenitor of various dark entities in Turkic myths.
Much like its mother, Unugai possesses the uncanny ability to ride a horse. However, this dread-inspiring talent casts a shadow of terror and suffering wherever it roams.
Mentions of Unugai were found mainly in the Sheki region of Azerbaijan, where tales of his ominous presence were once deeply rooted in local folklore. Yet, the passage of centuries, marked by the influence of Islamic beliefs, has nearly erased Unugai from the collective consciousness. Nowadays, the mere mention of cemeteries at night sends chills down the spines of children, who, in their fear, cry out not "Unugai!" but rather "jin," invoking the spirits of Islamic legend.
Intriguingly, archaeological discoveries in present-day Azerbaijan have unveiled enigmatic, smiling idols, thought to have been placed in cemeteries by the ancient tribes of Caucasian Albania. Their purpose remains shrouded in mystery, but a tantalizing connection emerges when exploring the legend of Unugai and its transformation into the genie narrative. It beckons us to consider that in bygone eras, similar legends may have pervaded these lands, and people, through the guardianship of idols, sought to shield their sacred resting places from malevolent forces.
