The Dark Knight Trilogy: Rachel Dawes [ESFJ]
OFFICIAL TYPING by Charity / the Mod
Functional Order: Fe-Si-Ne-Ti
Tumblr media
Judging Functional Axis:
Extroverted Feeling (Fe) / Introverted Thinking (Ti)
Rachel is more than forthcoming in her feelings about everything from her job to Bruce’s behavior; she tells him it’s not who you are inside that matters, but “what you do.” When she discovers his true identity, she tells him she cannot be with him while he “wears a mask” (the face he pretends to be – a lazy, billionaire playboy). She pushes on him the idea that he must step outside himself and care more about society; look beyond his own pain to Gotham’s corruption and rotten core, to the people who need him, to live up to his father’s legacy and become a hero. Her assertiveness sometimes gets her into trouble, since she is the first person to step forward with authority. Rachel can be ruthless in her criticisms of anyone or anything that gets in her way, and she knows her own mind well enough to assert it, but she is not entirely objective, nor does she stop to think about the potential logical ramifications of her actions – she operates purely on her sense of right and wrong (inferior Ti).
Tumblr media
Perceiving Functional Axis:
Introverted Sensing (Si) / Extroverted Intuition (Ne)
She (somewhat incorrectly) assumes that because she is a DA, everyone is subject to her legal authority – and this assumption backfires in the asylum and with her enemies. Rachel does not let go of the Bruce she used to know, both as a child and as a young adult; she tells him she loves that version of him, and for a time, is willing to wait for him to remove the mask and return to her. Rachel’s assessment of the problems within Gotham are all based on her own former experiences (“that usually means, start with the river”). She believes in making a real, immediate impact but also in shaping the future. Rachel sees potential in Bruce but feels at first that he is not living up to his greater self. She often makes correct inferences (her boss is dead, and there’s “something suspicious” about others’ behaviors), but she does not sense Bruce’s identity until he hints the truth to her. Rachel can also be somewhat naive about the danger she is in (if she wants to go to an asylum in the Narrows, she’ll damn well do it, thanks).
Tumblr media
Hogwarts House: Gryffindor
House Traits: daring, nerve, and chivalry.
Rachel is an aggressive, opinionated woman who refuses to back down even when things get rough – she isn’t afraid to go into a bad part of town, stand up to truly despicable people, or risk her life in pursuit of justice. She does not like Bruce slacking off, abandoning his resources, or neglecting his father’s business. She believes he could do some good in the world, if he would just step up and actually commit to it. BUT… she is also willing to wait for him, to trust in him to get better, up to a point. She devotes her own time to cleaning up Gotham and supporting those who’ll make a difference. Rachel doesn’t want to “play dirty” in the town; she wants to clean it up.
Tumblr media
Enneagram: 1w2 so/sp
Tritype: 136 The Taskmaster [1w2 3w2 6w5]
Rachel is very fixated on the idea of right and wrong, her duty to Gotham, and how Bruce should be using his wealth and influence to do good things rather than hiding away from the world or acting like a playboy. She acts on her principles even when others do not like it, and constantly pushes him to become a better person, a better businessman, a better everything. As a social subtype, Rachel focuses on trying to make the world a better place, both through striving for social change and in setting a good example through her hard work and dedication. Her 2 wing focuses her outward on helping society improve itself, as well as allows her to accept that Bruce isn’t a completely lost cause, but allowed to have his own human failings. Her 3 is ambitious and hardworking – she becomes one of the top lawyers in Gotham, and accuses Harvey of being irresponsible when he doesn’t come to work as he should (”I am where you should be, at the police station!”). Her 6 is somewhat distrustful and cautious; she doesn’t want to see Harvey get hurt, but also sometimes takes risks herself out of moral principles (1′s influence).

Harvey’s thumb strokes the side of Rachel’s hand as they wait for the elevator to reach the very top of Wayne’s penthouse. She looks over to him as he is practically sweating in his spot. When she leans in to comfort him, the elevator doors open, and Harvey starts forward. He looks over to Rachel when he notices her leaning in, but she gives him nothing more than an encouraging glance as they join the crowd of people. Designer suits, botox, and a wave of expensive perfumes and colognes greet them at the top floor. Harvey’s eyes widen as he takes in the extravagance of the penthouse and its guests. Rachel spots his deer-in-headlights look and can’t help but smirk. “Now I’ve seen it all,” he looks over to her to see that crooked smirk she often wears when she’s about to lighten the mood. “Harvey Dent, scourge of the underworld,” she glances around them and her chin rises as her smile grows. “Scared stiff by the trust fund brigade?” She chuckles her last words and Harvey is having a bit of a rough go at loosening up. “I’ll be back,” Rachel darts off to greet a familiar face from the office. “Rachel-” Harvey extends his arm as their hands part, and Alfred Pennyworth cuts in just in time. “A little liquid courage, Mister Dent?” The butler presents the district attorney with a tray of champagne glasses of little variety. Harvey doesn’t miss a beat when he reaches in for one, and he takes a moment of deduction to gather who exactly this man might be. “Alfred, right?” Harvey stares into Alfred’s eyes, his look intense as his initial nervousness fails to leave him. Alfred smiles. “That’s right, sir.” “Yeah, Rachel talks about you all the time,” he lifts his glass slightly as though to cheers the comfort of putting a face to a man so highly spoken of. “You’ve known her her whole life?” “Oh, not yet, sir.” Harvey chuckles. His sense of humour has gained praise by Rachel herself and it’s good to witness some of it in person. He bites. “Any psychotic ex-boyfriends I should be aware of?” Harvey goes to sip the glass, but the liquid doesn’t quite make it after Alfred’s retort. “Oh, you have no idea,” the butler says, shooting a toothy smile as he moves along. Dent stands in his spot, unsure of what to make of that comment. His puzzled thoughts are interrupted by the sound of a helicopter parking itself on the landing pad just outside. A tall man with gelled hair and an Armani suit exits the chopper with a lovely lady in yellow. Then another in blue. And another in pink. The foursome approaches the audience of guests peeking through the glass doors. Harvey looks around as he feels misplaced in this sea of luxurious reminders of lavish overspending. No one nearby seems to bat an eye at the sight. Bruce Wayne must pull these types of theatrics often, he thought. Rachel is further back in the room with her arms crossed as a few sighs escape her. It is in this moment he understands Bruce’s reputation as a mere rich kid trapped in a grown man’s body. “I’m sorry that I’m late,” Bruce parts himself from the three models as he takes in the room. “I’m glad to see that you all got started without me.” “Now!” Bruce’s hands clap when he brings them together and strolls through the crowd, “where is Harvey?” It doesn’t take him long to spot the man sticking out like a sore thumb. Bruce is glad to see that Harvey is able to be found so easily in a crowd of vapid people, but he doesn’t express it. “Harvey Dent, the man of the hour,” he simply says. “And where is Rachel Dawes? Another easy one to spot. Her hair is wrapped beautifully in a loose bun and her gown could easily be worn by any other woman in the room, yet something about the way she carries herself allows for her to be seen from a mile away. “She is my oldest friend! Come here.” Bruce waves her over and she walks to join Harvey, her arms still folded. Harvey reaches for Rachel, but she doesn’t notice. She’s too busy being repulsed at the Bruce Wayne mask he’s put on for everyone. Harvey doesn’t think much of it. “You know, when Rachel first told me that she was dating Harvey Dent, I had one thing to say…” Rachel fights a scowl as she endures the long beat left by Bruce. “The guy from those god-awful campaign commercials? I believe in Harvey Dent?” Bruce gives the DA a thumbs up. “Yeah, nice slogan, Harvey.” A select few in the crowd chuckle lightly and Rachel can’t help but roll her eyes in, truly, the most subtle way she knows how. “But it got Rachel’s attention.” Rachel keeps her chin held forward, but her stare falls down to the floor. She knows that Bruce can hardly help himself when there’s an audience and there’s something about the way he chooses to present himself that she’s never gotten used to. It’s not who you are underneath. It’s what you do that defines you. Nor will she ever get used to it. “And then I started to pay attention to Harvey and all that he’s been doing as our new DA.” Bruce fights any sign of sincerity as he speaks his words and means them. He’s got to keep up the Bruce Wayne façade after all. “And you know what?” A long pause. Rachel looks back up at Bruce and she studies his expression, trying to spot even a moment that doesn’t include a mask. “I believe in Harvey Dent.” She isn’t so sure she can find one. “I believe that on his watch Gotham can feel a little safer.” Harvey watches as the playboy makes his speech. It wasn’t the most ideal start, but he finds himself warming up to it at this point. “And a little more optimistic.” The tension in Rachel’s body loosens as Bruce speaks seemingly real words. She had physically prepared herself for more jokes. “Look at this face. This is the face of Gotham’s bright future,” Bruce holds a hand up. “To Harvey Dent. Let’s hear it for him.” He brings his hands together and the crowd follows with applause. Bruce takes a glass of champagne and raises it at Harvey’s direction before handing over the spotlight to the man of the hour. He disappears from the clapping crowd and steps out into the balcony. As he approaches the railings, he looks out at the city’s evening sparkle and he pours his champagne out over the ledge. The weight of the door behind him shakes the glass and Bruce looks to see Rachel Dawes. She joins him outside after having been several steps behind him. “Harvey might not know you well enough to understand when you’re making fun of him, Bruce, but I do.” She rests her arm on the balcony railing and looks daggers at her old friend. “No,” Bruce sheds his mask if only for a moment, “I meant every word.” And Rachel believes him. Bruce eases in closer to Rachel and she stares at him with intrigue. “You know that day that you once told me about? When Gotham would no longer need Batman?” Bruce looks hopeful, but Rachel sighs under her breath. “It’s coming.” “Bruce,” she places a hand over the top part of his arm, “no, you can’t ask me to wait for that.” Rachel shakes her head slowly as she speaks, her mouth slanting to the side of her face as she fights to be honest and clear with him. “It’s happening now,” his hopeful look never wavers. “Harvey is that hero. He locked up half of the city's criminals and he did it without wearing a mask. Gotham needs a hero with a face.” The hairs on Rachel’s arms stand up at that statement. It’s so easy to forget that Bruce may be fully aware of his own masks, especially since he wears them so well. Her hand slides off his arm and falls to her side as she mirrors his hopeful look. “You throw a party, Wayne, I’ll give you that.” Harvey’s interruption cuts through their moment. He shoves a hand in his pocket as he awkwardly approaches the two childhood friends. “Mind if I borrow Rachel?” Bruce nods, but Rachel is already on her way to Harvey. She looks back at Bruce and their eyes lock for one last moment before she joins her boyfriend inside.

Rachel Dawes and Harvey Dent, flashing their pearly whites. They don't make it a habit to be all smiles for the local media. In fact, the cameras happened to catch them during the aftermath of a flirtatious back-and-forth that took place not long before they exited the office.

Rachel Dawes in The Dark Knight, Scene 1
[ Katie Holmes' Rachel Dawes was slightly different than Maggie Gyllenhaal's. This is my take on how each scene in The Dark Knight would differ had it been Katie's Rachel in place of Maggie's ]
Tumblr media
Bodies are shuffling in their seats in anticipation of the District Attorney’s courtroom arrival. Maroni sips his glass of water and leans back into his chair as he places the drink down in front of him. The bottom of the glass knocking on the hard wood of the table nearly echoes through the silence of the room. Rachel observes his obvious attempts at appearing calm and collected. She studies his movements and begins to mimic the way he rocks in his chair. Minutes pass, and the colleague next to Rachel swipes up his sleeve to reveal the time. Rachel leans into his side, “he’ll be here-” “Sorry I’m late, folks!” Like clockwork, the courtroom doors burst open, prompting everyone in the room to turn their heads. Harvey Dent, the man of the hour, comes in with his charismatic energy and chin held high. Rachel sighs under her breath as he seats himself next to her. “Good of you to join us.” Her voice is purposely monotone to mask the annoyance. Harvey smirks as he sees right through it, “worried you’d have to step up?” “Harvey,” Rachel snaps, “I know these briefs backwards.” She assists him in organizing the files from out of his briefcase – something she does on autopilot. “Well then, fair is fair.” He digs into his pocket and pulls out a two-headed peace dollar, inspiring a less-than-amused scoff out of Rachel. “Heads: I’ll take it. Tales: he’s all yours.” “You’re going to flip a coin to see who leads?” They have a normal back-and-forth banter that doesn’t appear present in this moment. Rachel peers at the coin, a big part of her hoping he’ll put it back in his pocket. “It’s my father’s lucky coin,” he reminds her of its sentiment to ease her worries of him appearing childish in court with his little trinkets. “As I recall, it got me my first date with you.” Now he’s just being cute, trying to win her over. Rachel sees through it, “I wouldn’t leave something like that up to chance,” but she fights a small smirk as she fails to resist his charm. Harvey flips the coin, and the silver makes a ringing sound as it cuts through the air. Rachels last words put a grin on his face. He covers the dollar when it lands on top of his hand before revealing it. “I don’t.” Heads. They both stare at the engraved Lady Liberty, briefly. Rachel looks back up at him with an expression that tells him she’s still annoyed, but she loves him anyway. His smirk tells her he’ll take it. “All rise.” The bailiff announces the case in a robotic, impatient tone. Maroni turns to Harvey as he adjusts his coat. “I thought the DA just played golf with the Mayor, things like that.” Rachel looks daggers at the mob man but eases at Harvey’s retort. “Tee-off’s 1:30. More than enough time to put you away for life, Sally.” That earns a genuine smirk out of her. - - Wilmer Rossi is on the stand as Harvey Dent works the room. Dent’s coat is open, his limbs are loose, and there is a purpose to his stride. He treats the place as though it were his own home. “With Carmine Falcone in Arkham, someone must’ve stepped up to run the so-called family.” Rossi gives an exaggerated nod accompanied with a seemingly unhinged smile. He fiddles with his tie as Dent makes a lap from the mob boss back to Rossi. “Is that man in this courtroom today?” Rossi nods, this time without the previous theatrics. Dent turns back to Maroni. “Could you identify him for us, please?” Dent raises his brows at Maroni, his confidence building up to dangerous levels as he feels the mob boss is about to go down. “You win, counsellor,” says Rossi. Dent wears a menacing grin as he peers directly into Maroni’s eyes. “It was me!” Rossi says after a long beat. Harvey’s expression falls to the floor as he turns to face Rossi. Rachel shuffles through the files in front of her to search Rossi’s statement. She pushes it towards the edge of the table for Dent to take. “I have a sworn statement,” he holds the paper in front of him, “from you, that this man, Salvatore Maroni,” he points at mob boss, guided by his frustration as he forcefully places the statement back down on the desk. He walks towards Sal as he continues, “is the new head of the Falcone crime family.” Maroni keeps his cool. “Maroni?” Rossi’s Boston accent kicks in as his words are laced with a humourous tone, “he’s a fall guy! I’m the brains of the organization.” The gallery takes in his comedic timing and laughs on cue. Rachel looks over her shoulder, repulsed at their enablement. “Order!” The judge slams his gavel several times to calm the ‘audience’. How could this case go from being a guarantee win to a sitcom? Harvey’s had enough. He approaches the judge with a scowl, his shoulders hovered forward. “Permission to treat the witness as a hostile.” “Granted,” the judge doesn’t even take a beat. “Hostile?” Rossi pulls out a pistol. “I’ll show ya hostile!” Rachel raises from her seat as tensions peak. Harvey takes a quick second to peer down at the pistol before grabbing onto it and sucker punching the witness. Security is quick to respond and they hold him back. Harvey unloads the gun as he walks towards Maroni. His gaze only leaves his to look at the pistol in his hand. “Carbon fiber, .28 caliber. Made in China.” Maroni still appears relaxed, but Harvey knows he’s hanging onto its now-flimsy composure. “If you wanna kill a public servant, Mister Maroni, I recommend you buy American.” Dent places the gun on the table in front of Maroni, the carbon fiber leaving a ting sound. “Get ‘em out of here,” the judge orders. Dent turns around, unphased. “But, your honour, I’m not done.” The gallery claps, and this time Rachel can understand their forthright reaction. She wears a small smile as she gives an exhale of relief. - -
Tumblr media
Harvey and Rachel march through the lobby. Her coat is draped over her arm and he’s holding his briefcase. “We’ll never be able to link the gun to Maroni,” Rachel speaks as her shoes click on the marble floor, “so we’ll never be able to charge him... but the fact that they’re trying to kill you means we’re getting to them.” She speaks as though it’s another day at the office, her head completely in lawyer-mode. Harvey looks over to her. “I’m glad you’re so pleased, Rachel. I’m fine, by the way.” “As Gotham’s DA, if you’re not getting shot at, you’re not doing your job right.” Rachel smirks apologetically as she takes his hand. “But you know that.” Harvey sighs as he fights the urge to go against their agreement and kiss his girlfriend at work. She fiddles with his fingers with a hopeful look in her eye, “what’s on the agenda?” “I dragged the head of the Major Crimes Unit down here.” Harvey says with a determination to interrogate. Rachel pulls on his arm to bring their strut to a halt, “Jim Gordon?” She places a hand over Harvey’s shoulder and wears an expression that demands he take her seriously. “He’s a friend, actually. Play nice.”

I liked being able to see Rachel's perspective as someone poisoned by Scarecrow's fear toxin. To me, it has always looked like she could see Gotham's light fading and being overrun by darkness. At one point, you can see an American flag which I think symbolizes Rachel's civic patriotism. The image of the flag itself is fleeting and disappears right before the trail of light begins to fade. The shape the light takes is interesting to me; it looks almost as though it resembles what Rachel truly believes to be what helps circulate the bustling city. Gotham's veins. Upon entering the Batcave, Rachel sees one more dash of that light - a final spark - before her body shuts down and she passes out. The scariest thing Rachel's poisoned mind could generate is making the light in Gotham dissipate right before her eyes.
