Words to use instead of ‘said’
**Using the word ‘said’ is absolutely not a bad choice, and in fact, you will want to use it for at least 40% of all your dialogue tags. Using other words can be great, especially for description and showing emotion, but used in excess can take away or distract from the story.

Still
(Word count: 573)
The morning sun was the first thing to wake him up. His alarm never beat the star of the sky, and would often go off when he rolled out of bed, a groan echoing from his lips.
His routine was rather normal, with him groggily slipping to the bathroom and brushing his teeth. Most mornings he would fully awake to the smell of breakfast being made downstairs. That lovely smell of syrup and batter would waft up the stairs and past the vacant rooms his children used to occupy. It'd wrap around his leg while he was in their bathroom, then grab him with an indestructible hold and pull him down the stairs.
So down the stairs he went. The wood was warm and smelled of a refreshening pine, a thick layer of lemon bleach and other lemon-scented products coating the air. Like a wandering soul, he'd slowly slip through the house and hallways, finding himself in the kitchen where she stood.
Usually, she had headphones in with her long, red hair waving gracefully like an ocean current. The sunlight would hit the highlights in her hair just right, giving it a brighter look. He knew- and loved this woman- for 35 years- she was only his wife for 26 of those graceful years.
Her hair was always so silky and smooth that he couldn't resist touching it. He'd gently wrap a strand of her hair around his finger and feel every soft strand drag against his skin.
When he stepped into that kitchen, he'd gently wrap his arms around her waist, letting his chin rest on her shoulder, spectating her movements while she cooked them both breakfast. Their youngest kid had already moved out of the house nearly three years ago, and they both knew that their children had already begun to spread their wings and soar through the real world, and it left them both with nothing but themselves.
Mornings were silent, and he didn't mind- neither did she. He'd simply mosey into the kitchen after waking up and snuggle his nose into her nape. His wife's citrus shampoo was still strong in her thick locks of fading red hair.
She was always conscious about her fading color, but he was always there to hold her and dance with her slowly in their living room while he whispered reassurance to her. Even still, without that faint music playing, he still had that rhythm in his hips that slipped from his soft fingertips to her body.
In the distance, the sound of their faint radio played in the gentle songs that played during the early hours. Her husband seemed to sway their bodies with the slow tempo, closing his eyes and inhaling the scent of her strong shampoo and perfume she'd wear to work.
Coffee was brewing, allowing its aroma to fill the air. There were many scents he could focus on, but he chose to plant his attention on the way his wife let him sway her hips gently- let him rest his chin on her shoulder while she finished up their breakfast. When she was done, she'd gently shrug her shoulder, the weight of his head adding resistance. Most times he'd step away and get their coffees; other times he wouldn't move. Instead, he'd groan at the interruption and continue to hold her, his soft grip giving the concept that he'd never let her go.
And sometimes he never did.

So, I haven't really been open about sharing my works with anyone other than the five people I talk to everyday, but my bestie encouraged me to write out stuff here. So here I am... Hello Tumblr, ladies, gentleman, and everything in between, my name is evoss-birdi (you can call me evoss, birdi, or EB, I don't really care) and I'm an aspiring author and quite an addicted writer.
I work on my own original works and one off stories that I may or may not finish, and just tend to write to get thoughts off my chest (so expect to find anything ranging from a small page of scenery I had in my mind, to literal word splatter about nothing at all :D )
Anyways, I don't know how things work on here, at all, and wouldn't mind if people helped me along my first few works until I get the hang of being on here.
Thanks for coming across this awkward text and reading it all the way through. Can't wait to start ;-;...
