I wanted scoops troop cuddles so here it is
Post-s4, I think Erica would have been scared. She had to be chased by an almost-adult, had to see her brother and her friend (I think they'd be friends) like that, so she's still a bit scared even though she never tells anyone.
They're all at Steve's house, planning on what they should do from now on. There's been big losses, so the atmosphere is quite grim. She's tired of seeing them like that, so she drifts away slowly towards the rooms.
In one room, Erica sees two figures tangled on the bed. It's Robin and Steve. Steve had to go to bed early because of his mandatory rest prescribed by the doctors, and Robin probably just fell asleep with him while making sure he got to sleep.
Robin wakes up for a moment at the sound of her in the doorway, and mumbles out an "Erica?" before reaching out to her. Erica approaches her and soon is caught by Robin. She just gently tugs, saying, "Come here," and Erica watches her as she tries to make space in the bed by pushing Steve (who surprisingly doesn't even wake up) away from the center.
After arrangements are made, Robin tugs Erica again and Erica follows. The bed is warm from their heat, and as she holds onto Robin's waist she feels herself calming a little.
Dustin notices Erica is gone. It shouldn't disturb him, but he's a bit worried. (If he has problems letting people out of his sight, then it's nobody's business.) He checks the rooms and finds all three of them sleeping, cuddled together.
Erica is latched onto Robin, who has her both arms around both Erica and Steve. Steve, on the edge of the bed, is in a weird pose that makes him look as if he's been pushed out.
Dustin relaxes, seeing them altogether. So he decides to join. He tries to get between Steve and Robin (since there's no space on the outsides) and fails, so he resorts to sleeping on Steve. Steve lets out a small "whaa-?" before just falling back to sleep.
The others find them sleeping like that and decides to let them rest because, well, it is late in the night and they all deserve to rest a bit.

No.12 — Gift
"Alright, everyone— gather up! No, wait— spread out, we need the space!"
Eddie stands in the center of the living room, with a crinkled box in hand. Everyone—Nancy included— is sitting in a circle around him, nervously waiting for Eddie to open the box.
The box contains many mysteries, untold to the audience— this is Steve's Box of Photos. Eddie feels a bit excited himself, as he eyes Steve awkwardly sitting in the corner of the room.
With a final look towards the crowd gathered around him, Eddie plops down too, examining the box. It's a fairly neat one, except for the crumpled corner that makes the box look like it's been thrown to the ground.
Eddie gulps, opening the box, and stares at the contents inside. He thought it'd be just a pile of pictures. Well, if photos are not plastered to walls or put inside albums, that's how they're kept, right? But it's not. They are wrapped in colored paper, with names written on. They look like—
"Alright, seems like a distribution is in need," Eddie announces. The kids look curious, trying to look inside. Eddie grabs a package, squinting at the name.
"Okay, the first is... 'Wheelers'?"
"That's us," Nancy quickly answers. And as Eddie hands her the photos, she notices the wrapping and asks, "Actually, do you mind opening them for us? I think it might be a bit hard to..."
"Of course. Uh, do you want me to spread them out, too?"
At the Wheelers' nods Eddie quickly starts spreading out the pictures, one by one. It's fun, getting a glimpse into their old lives. All the photos are of the siblings, depicting various moments of their happiness. As he lays down the last one, he turns to the box again and picks up another package.
"The next is- may I present... 'Henderson.' I know that's you, Dustin."
***
"They seem very organized," Eddie comments.
He has now moved away from the center of the living room to the corner of it, leaving the others to reminisce. He tilts his head towards Steve, who's sitting next to him.
"Mm-hm," Steve hums an affirmation.
"Like they're supposed to be shown to others."
"They are."
Eddie gently hums in return, encouraging Steve to continue.
"They were supposed to be a gift, I guess. Before... before everything happened, I planned to give them out. Little memoirs, you know? 'Cause I was graduating and thought it'd be great for the party. But then, yeah, it happened and I never got around to it."
"Can I ask you about the damaged box?"
Steve hesitates at his question, picking at the floor a bit.
"I think I was angry," he starts. "Right after everything happened, I was angry that it had happened to me and angry that nothing was going to be the same. I stayed like that for a while, and I still had problems adjusting to this... form when I bumped into the box while trying to move. It pissed me off, I guess, being reminded of before. So I just threw it into the basement. Not the smartest choice— I didn't know the kids might have missed having pictures."
"Well, they were your gifts to give out. And sometimes a little suspension is needed for the element of surprise," Eddie mentions.
Steve just huffs, muttering, "Some suspension it was, going on for more than two decades."
Eddie shrugs, and suddenly a thought comes to him.
"Is that why you don't have a packet? 'Cause they're gifts for others?"
"What?"
"You know, your pack of photos. I didn't see one in there."
"Oh, yeah. I mean, there's no need to wrap it up if I just have them in the house, right?"
"So... do you have them? In the house?"
Eddie doesn't know why he is so curious about the photos. But the blurred figure he saw in the picture of the fair doesn't leave his thoughts— he wants to see Steve clearly.
Steve takes a moment to ponder, rubbing his neck with his claws.
"Uh... I'm not sure? I don't remember what I did with them, or where I put them. They're probably somewhere."
Eddie tries not to let his disappointment show — why is he even disappointed? — and just answers with a "Oh."
***
It's late at night, when Eddie hears a noise from the door.
"Hey, Eddie, Eddie? I'm coming in–, can I come in?"
The voice is muffled, so it takes a moment to realize that it's Robin's. And as soon as he hears her, the door opens by its own and reveals the crow sitting on the door handle, with something in her beak.
"I'm glad you invited yourself in, Rob. What's the hurry?"
Robin is not even affected by the tone of his annoyed voice—he was getting ready for sleep, you know— and just hops over to the bed. She sets the piece she had in her beak down in front of him, and Eddie sees that it's a photo, one of Robin's.
"Well, you helped us a lot today, and we all got gifts but you didn't— So it's a gift. Wait, maybe it's not a permanent gift. More like a rental gift, for only a while, because I do like that picture. But yeah, I thought you might want to see this one. I'm lending this photo to you for a few days."
"...A photo rental for a gift," Eddie questions, trying to figure out what it is that Robin's doing. Robin doesn't even catch his suspicion and just answers smugly with a "Yup."
"Tell me why I would want to see this photo?"
The photo is one of the pictures that Eddie had passed by earlier, of Robin and two other people who are probably her friends. Robin and the girl on her left are wearing some sort of band uniforms with instruments in their hands, and the boy on her right is wearing a basketball uniform. They're all grinning widely at the camera, clearly excited.
"Oh, I don't know," and Eddie can hear the sparkle in her voice as she continues, "This one was actually the first photo taken with Steve's new camera. He brought it to school because we had band practice and basketball practice nearby each other, and he wanted to show it to me first.
"He offered to take my photo first, with Vickie because— well, that's a story for another time. So, anyway, he had us in front of the camera but then Scott came and offered to take all of us so that Steve could be in the first photo, too. And this was it."
Eddie isn't sure he heard the last part of Robin's rambling. He's trying to look engaged in her story, but it feels like all his senses are directed towards the laid down photo.
The photo, which apparently has Steve in it. He curses himself for not having paid enough attention to the pictures earlier because, how did he miss it? Of course there'd be Steve in Robin's pictures. They're together almost all the time.
He's so engrossed in trying (and failing) to sneak a look at the photo without Robin noticing that he almost misses her starting to leave. She's at the door, glancing back at Eddie before muttering out something that definitely sounds like "another dingus." Eddie just mindlessly nods her a goodbye, now not even trying to hide his inattention.
As soon as Robin is out of his sight, Eddie delves into the photo.
Of Steve.
The first thing he notices is the moles scattered along his cheeks like constellations, noticeable even with the low resolution. Second is his hair, because— yeah, Eddie can definitely see Steve giving Dustin his hairspray. It's set perfectly even after having run around the court, and Eddie chuckles at that part.
Then, he is drawn into Steve's wide smile. Eddie stares for a moment, taking in the curve of his lips and all. Steve looks so carefree, with his arm slung around Robin. Carefree like any other teenager who is excited about his new camera.
And Eddie wishes he could have seen that smile for real.

au where a lot of people in hawkins are fantasy/mythological beings (dustin is werewolf, wheelers are faes, robin's a witch etc) and steve is a guy. just a human. but it doesn't stop him from being the trusted babysitter in hawkins.
claudia's been busy lately, so steve has been taking care of dustin's dinner. he's trying right now to make some edible spaghetti, waiting for dustin to come.
he hears the door open and the kid is unusually quiet. steve pokes his head out of the kitchen and sees him them.
dustin is giving steve his most innocent smile, but it doesn't take steve's attention from the being next to dustin.
he looks like a human, minus the fact that he has two large horns protruding from his forehead, blazing golden eyes, blood red fingers, and a tail. oh and there's smoke coming out of his mouth.
"uh... dustin, who's that?"
"who's who? :)"
"the man next to you??"
"oh! you meant eddie! yeah, steve say hi to eddie. eddie, say hi to steve."
the being—eddie— waves, also with a innocent smile.
"and he is–?"
"ohhe'sjustademonisummonedwiththepartytoday. he's no harm, actually."
"what?!"
so yeah, the party thought it would be fun to summon a demon and because dustin did the main act of summoning, the demon—eddie— is now bound to dustin by contract. he can't go back to hell until he finishes the deal, and in the meantime he's got nowhere to stay. and the kids can't take him in, their parents can't know about eddie. this leaves steve's.
steve's baffled, because did he just become housemates with a demon? and eddie is just curious of the human that has all those beings wrapped around his finger.

No.11 — Photo
"I'm just saying, hair products can be a weapon. Remember the hairspray incident, Lucas? Hmm?"
"Urgh, you never let it down, so of course I remember. But why would there be a hairspray in the fantasy world? And why would you even pack it?"
"I don't care if you're using hairspray or not, just make the damned decision right now!"
"Uh, guys- you lost me back there but, what hairspray incident?"
The kids stop arguing and turn to Eddie. Dustin looks smug, Lucas is throwing his paws into the air, Erica looks like she's on the verge of stealing the dice box (Eddie designed it to make the kids rolling dice easier) from Eddie, and Mike is grinning like he knows what is to come.
"Well, you see, Eddie-" Dustin starts, "When I came back home from the camp, these guys had this absurd idea of sneaking up on me."
"It was a surprise party, Dustin. Of course we had to surprise you. It's literally in the name."
"So, I had to take defense quick — it required a swift thinking — and grabbed the hairspray off the desk and sprayed it on the intruder."
"I had to wash it off my eyes for ten minutes!"
"It worked perfectly," Dustin finishes with a grin.
It's adorable, how the kids have been friends all these years. But Eddie cannot help but notice a small detail in the story.
"Henderson, I never thought you'd be a hairspray type of guy," Eddie smirks.
Mike laughs as he hears the words.
"Oh, man. It was so terrible. You should have seen him!"
"It was not!"
Mike ignores the indignant scream and continues, "Dustin used so much hairspray at the Snow Ball, it looked like a bird's nest."
"No, it did not! It was cool!"
But then Lucas fake-whispers, "It did look like a bird's nest," and everyone's laughing. Even Dustin, as he mutters out "Well, maybe a little bit more than I should've. But it was cool."
"Man, I really wish I could've seen it," Eddie laughs, and suddenly he realizes he really means it.
He wants to see what these guys were like before.
Regular teenagers, living pretty normal and un-cursed lives.
As Eddie halts deep in his thoughts, the kids notice the change, too. They exchange glances, waiting for Eddie to continue. An idea strikes him.
"Hey, do you guys maybe have—"
"We don't have photos anymore."
But just as Eddie pitches the idea, Mike answers abruptly.
"I think Steve got rid of them right after we were cursed."
Oh.
"Oh."
It's a shame, he really would have liked to see their pictures, but he is reminded of how nervous Steve was just for being seen. Wouldn't have been easy, Eddie guesses.
But suddenly Dustin stands up.
"But we do have one. We do have one! Lucas, come on!"
***
"How did you even keep this one?"
They all crouch in a circle — now Max included — staring at the one photo Dustin and Lucas managed to save.
Apparently, they had kept it just before they got cursed, just before Steve got rid of everything else.
It's a black and white photo, taken at a fair. A boy with the wild curly hair is grinning in the middle, holding up a prize. A girl is next to him, trying to look nonchalant but massively failing, as the corners of her lips are shifting into a grin. She also has both hands full of snacks. Behind them is an older girl, pulling the kids close but her focus is elsewhere, and she's laughing at something.
Eddie follows her gaze to a blurry figure on the left. It looks like whoever they are, they are falling down. Eddie stares at the figure, only recognizable by the back of their head.
"So I'm guessing this is Dustin and Max?" Eddie points to the two kids in the photo.
"Yeah! We took them at the summer fair. And that's Robin, and uh, the blurry thing is Steve. He tripped just as the shutter went off. I told him not to put the bag there."
"It wouldn't have been big enough to trip on if you hadn't felt the need to buy every weird toy you saw," Max counters.
The kids are bickering again, deep inside the memories. Eddie senses a movement from the stairs and looks up.
Steve is there, trying to figure out what the kids are excited about. Robin's perched on his shoulder, whispering something to him. Eddie grins, mouthing a "hey" to them. Steve walks forwards.
"Alright, what are you kids up to?"
This gets everyone to look up. Eddie can see confusion in their eyes, secretly glancing between Steve and Eddie, trying to figure out what is okay.
"We have a photo," Max finally blurts out.
Steve squirms a bit at the mention of the word, but overall he stays calm, and Eddie feels oddly proud of him.
"Oh yeah? What is it?" he asks.
"The one where you fell, at the summer fair."
Steve groans and Robin just starts cackling, jumping down from his shoulder and hopping towards the photo.
"Come on, let me see. I missed this one. Oh my god, Steve, this is just too pathetic! I love this one, do you guys have more?"
The kids just shake their heads at the question, ready to tell her that the photo's the only one that exists. But then Steve, from behind Eddie, speaks up.
"I've got more. Uh, at the basement. I can get them for you if you want."

Robin who doesn't like touching people.
I mean, she's okay with occasional small pats on the shoulder and handshakes, but big gestures like hugs and skin on skin contact always felt iffy. The only people she's comfortable with touching were her mother and one friend in grade 3.
But the moment she's holding hands with Steve Harrington in the rain, she forgets she doesn't do touching. Well, they nearly got caught by the Russians, so maybe she was just in a panic.
Then after Starcourt, they are both at Steve's house and she finds herself cuddling him. It's weird, but there's no discomfort, so she's curious.
She gives hum a tight hug, and Steve reciprocates immediately, because he just loves human contact. That is so him, Robin thinks. They stay like that for a while, then move onto talking about dumb stuff while still remaining contact.
It feels natural, what Robin and Steve has. As Steve leans his head on hers, she thinks, Yeah, I could do this.

No.10 — Beast
So the thing is that Eddie still hasn't seen Steve. It bothered him less before; he thought maybe Steve didn't like meeting people. But he knows now. Steve likes people. His kids and his friends. He spends time with them even now— just, out of Eddie's eyes.
So yeah, it's bothering him more than it should now. What would he look like? Maybe like Max— a big feline? Why wouldn't he want to see Eddie?
But there's nothing he can do, is there? Unless he just barged into Steve's room, which he would never do because he doesn't want Steve to hate him, there's no way to meet Steve for real.
***
Eddie finds the way in the form of a sleepless night. It's just like other nights, but Eddie can't sleep. He picks up his journal and tries writing, plays air guitar, and picks up the journal again and doodles. But he can't sleep, so he just stays up. Everything is quiet, until he hears something in the hallway.
It's a soft noise, muffled footsteps against the floor. Maybe it's Max again — she sometimes stays up late — and if it's Max, he'll just bother her until they both can go to sleep.
So he opens the door to the hallway.
In the darkness of the night, he can see there's something large in the halls, a crouched figure.
Certainly not Max, the creature is much bigger than she is. But then, who?
Eddie takes a step forward as his eyes adjust in the darkness and he can see the figure more clearly. It's standing on its four limbs, but not in a puma way and more in a... werewolf way? Eddie can see its front paws tense, gripping into the floor, and then it's turning around.
Eddie stills as he sees the creature face to face. Only, there's no face. There are only crevasses, and they shift as Eddie realizes he's been noticed.
The crevasses on the creature's face opens up, revealing a teeth-filled mouth. Holy fuck. It lets out a growl — the low, dangerous growl Eddie heard on his first night in the mansion.
"Jesus H. Christ—" he gasps out.
Eddie is too stunned to move, too stunned to say anything more. But then the beast is running away, across the hallway towards—
Towards Steve's room. And into it.
Eddie stands still as the realization dawns upon him. He just met Steve. He just met Steve and he just gawked at him. Oh. His mind spins fast as he runs down the hallway.
Shit, shit, shit, he messed up, didn't he? He reacted in the worst way possible — well maybe not, but it feels like it. He should have known that there was a reason Steve didn't like showing himself, he probably was scared Eddie would freak out. And Eddie did freak out. He starts banging on the door as soon as he reaches the doorway.
"Hey, Steve? Steve, can I talk to you for a moment?"
"Fuck off," it's a wavering whisper, but with the intensity of a shout, and Steve sounds hurt— and Eddie hates that.
"Come on, man. Let me just talk to you."
Eddie doesn't get a answer, but he expected that. He lets out a small "Steve?" and leans his forehead against the door. He tries to listen to any sound that Steve might make.
"You know, I've been wanting to meet you for real. 'Cause we're friends now, I'd like to think that we are friends, and I'd like to spend time with you just like the other kids do. But you never came out of the room, and I was worried— worried that you might not want to see me.
"I even asked Max about you — I don't know, man, she seemed like the only one who wouldn't tell on me — and uh, I asked her if you didn't like me, if I did something wrong.
"So yeah, anyways, I kind of panicked back there. And I'm sorry for that. Really. But it was because I've never seen you before. Anyone like you before. You caught me off guard, Stevie. I was here beginning to think that you were just a voice. Just like that Psyche myth, maybe? And, uh–,"
"She did."
Eddie was not expecting any responses, so he resorts to the basic reaction of, "What?"
"Max told me that you asked her if I liked you or not."
Steve's voice is tentative, but it seems calmer than before.
"I- what?" Eddie feigns a gasp, "That traitor."
There's a small intake of breath, like Steve's trying to hold a laughter in. Eddie bites down a smile, too, and continues.
"Yeah, where was I? So, I don't- I don't want you to think that I want to meet you anymore, because now I've seen what you look like. Honestly, I don't think it even matters anymore — what you turned into — because,
"You're you, Steve. You're a good guy, a good friend, and I like being here with you."
Eddie gulps down and asks the question.
"So... will you open the door, please?"
There's a small silence, and Eddie's beginning to think maybe opening the door is a bit early for Steve. But then the door creaks open, just a bit. Eddie can see Steve peeking out through the gap.
"Hey there, big boy," he breathes out.
Steve pauses for a bit and then scoffs, only slightly. "'Big boy'?"
"Yeah, kinda suiting, isn't it? 'Cause you are like, big right now. You're as big as the door, Stevie."
"You're exaggerating."
"Hmm, I know. But bet you could touch the ceiling if you stretched. ...You know what? Let's try it right now. Come on, big boy, show me what you've got."
"What? No, I'm not doing that, Eddie."
Eddie can see the door opening more, Steve relaxing more. So he just shrugs and says, "Worth a try."
Steve huffs at his reply, and soon a comfortable silence falls between them. Eddie takes Steve into his eyes as he shifts in posture. He's probably not used to new people seeing him.
"Hey, Steve?"
"Yeah?" Steve's head perks a bit at his voice. And... that's kind of endearing, Eddie thinks in the back of his mind.
"I'm glad I finally met you," he whispers. "Talking between the door is nice but it was getting a little old, you know."
"...Yeah, I guess so."

Steve and Robin finish each other's sentences and communicate without words so everyone kinda accepts that they must have developed a weird psychic link (they've been through some really weird shit so everything seems possible right now).
Only, Steve and Robin are not psychic, they're just so good at reading each other that they don't need verbal communication.
But their respective partners Eddie and Nancy don't know this and are worried Robin or Steve would be able to sense it when they go lovey-dovey. Like, it's so awkward when you're trying to kiss your love but is reminded in the back of your mind that someone else might be feeling it too

So I came across a hermes kid eddie pjo au fanart on tumblr and got excited because it fits him well so much so I decided to add a little bit more on eddie
- eddie is a hermes kid because hermes is a shepherd himself and guess who tends to the lost little nerd sheep in high school? eddie
- also they're both witty and are able to spin out stories (the first thing hermes does when he's born is make jokes and steal cows and talk his way out of trouble I know this because I did a project about him)
- so hermes head counselor eddie talking stories to new and nervous kids to take their mind off their worries
- did you know that hermes invented the lyre (stringed instrument)? well eddie knows and that's why he claims any stringed instruments (including guitars) as his cabin's
- this got him into a lot of arguments with the apollo cabin and led to prank wars
- eddie is proud of it
-in the beginning of his and steve's odd co-parenting relationship they had this weird rivalry thing going on
- they'd try to invite dustin over to their table and see who he chose
- but what eddie overlooked was that hermes cabin has too many kids to invite someone over
- so steve won a lot
- eddie still holds grudge over this even after they get together (steve thinks it's ridiculous)
some random stranger things pjo au because I like both
- the godly parents: steve aphrodite robin apollo dustin hepaestus nancy athena eddie hermes
- as an aphrodite kid steve is naturally charming but he doesn't have charmspeak
- but does eddie know this? (no) is eddie convinced that steve is using charmspeak on him, and that's why he's falling for steve? (yes)
- robin is an apollo kid because I want her to randomly spew out mildly unimportant prophecies like 'dustin will drop his nougat tomorrow'
- also she's talented with musical instruments
- nancy reverse-used robin's prophetic abilities to win capture the flag game (she had robin accidentally blurt a very fake prophecy about their weakness in front of the enemy team) and that's how they became friends
- dustin doesn't have fire immunity
- but does it stop him from getting headfirst into a lot of troubles? (no)
- that's actually how steve and dustin became friends (dustin's pet bronze dragon dart went haywire and steve happened to be nearby to help dustin find dart before he caused any wreckage)
- aphrodite kid and hephaestus kid becoming friends against all the odds is funny considering their parents would probably never
- nancy, being an athena kid, planned out everything to ask robin out only to have her blurt out 'you're gonna ask me out this evening' the moment they see each other that day and cover her mouth in surprise
- the plan is foiled but it's okay because when robin recovers from her surprise and repeats 'you're gonna ask me out this evening' with a smile (it's in her you have a tom cruise poster voice) it's just adorable

(snippety as I intended in the first place — I don't know what happened with other ones)
No.9 — Talks (between doors)
"Hey, Steve?"
"Yeah?"
"So where do you get the vegetables from?"
"What?"
"I mean, you used to only get me, uh, meat for the meals but you started getting me carrots and tomatoes recently. Is there like a wild plot nearby? If it's close I think I can go there myself. Save you the trouble, you know?"
"..."
"Steve?"
"...There's a communal garden just outside Loch Nora."
"A communal garden."
"...Yeah."
"Oh."
"Look, I panicked, okay? Nancy and Dustin told me you'd be needing vegetables too but I couldn't find them in the woods! And the garden was just nearby!"
"No, wait, Stevie, I'm not condemning you or anything. I should be thanking you. You are getting them for me. And I think that's a bit punk, actually."
"I don't even know what that means."
"You know, maybe this counts as anti-consumerism and... Wait, did you say, outside Loch Nora?"
***
"Dustin, I thought you said you guys couldn't leave?"
"We can't."
"So how does Steve go out into town?"
"Oh, yeah. Steve's an exception. He can leave. I thought you knew about this, Eddie. He's been bringing you food."
"To be honest I just thought he found them nearby, within the boundary of this place. Didn't know he had to go around a lot."
"Well, the boundary is very small. If it were big enough, we'd be going out often. I don't think I'd even give a shit about shitty storms, man. So, if we wanted something from outside this place, Steve would have to be the one to go out."
"Come to think about it, I don't think I've seen him get out. Wait, when does he go out? How come I've never seen him?"
***
"So that performance was, that was very metal."
"Huh, you really do know a lot about music."
"And have so many opinions about it, too."
"Well, thank you for the compliment, Steve, and thank you for your insight, Robin. Of course I have opinions about it. I've been playing for a long time now. Music is like a second language to me, one of my band members once said." (they didn't)
"Do you have any other real languages you speak? Other than music? You know, I can speak Spanish, French, and Italian well enough and I've been wanting to learn more, but it's kind of hard to do it here. So, do you?"
"...Yeah, of course. Uh, Quenya?"
"Quenya? Whoa, I've never heard of it. Where is it spoken in?"
"Uhh... Middle-earth?"
"Middle-earth?"
"Yup, yeah, that's right."
"Middle-earth. Wait, that's-. That's the one from Dustin's books."
"I don't know what you're talking about."
***
"Alright- Jesus, Munson, you can do this. It's simple. Just go and ask. Simple."
knock knock
"Hey, Stevie? You in there?"
"Yeah, what is it, Eddie?"
"So, I was writing down some stuff — you know, for the dnd session I'm planning for the kids? Anyways, my pen kind of broke down in the midst of it. I was wondering if I could borrow yours?"
"Uh, yeah? Sure."
"Cool! So, can I come—"
"You'll find some in the study on the first floor."
"...Oh."
"...Umm, you okay there?"
"Yeah yeah, thanks! I'll be down at the study if you need me, Steve!"
***
"Did you know that your dad's the most boring man to exist?!"
"My dad? What?"
"There's nothing in the study, Steve. Nothing."
"There's... a wall full of books there?"
"Yes, but nothing important's there! Where are the literatures? Science fiction? Or even philosophy? Who in their right mind wants to read books about managing time?"
"Uh... Is that a bad thing?"
"Honestly, the Encyclopedia was the most interesting there. And that says something. But- oh yeah, thanks for the pen, Stevie."
"Yeah, no problem."
***
"That Dragons and Daggers thing you told me about,"
"Dungeons and Dragons, man. Dungeons and Dragons."
"Yeah right, so what's that about?"
"Well, it's like a board game, actually. But definitely more complicated and more intense. It's a challenge for those who play, navigating through worlds of fantasy— and, uh, you play as a character and roll dice to make your moves. It's totally fun."
"It does sound fun. So you're gonna help the kids 'navigate through the world of fantasy'?"
"Yup! That'll be me, I'm the DM. Dungeon Master. I'd be narrating and making the kids face obstacles."
"Cool."
"...You know, you could come and watch if you want. The kids would love it. I could even make an NPC based on you."
"...Yeah, no. Maybe later, I guess. But thanks for the offer, Eddie."

No.8 — Curse
"Okay, so you first gotta know that Steve's dad is a bit of a prick. A douchbag, and a cheater — from what we've gathered. No, Steve doesn't mind if we talk shit about him. Robin gave us permission.
"Yeah, uh, we don't know what exactly happened, but we think that Mr. Harrington cheated on his wife. She found out, made Mr. Harrington ditch the lady he was cheating on with. But the problem was that the lady he messed up was not an ordinary woman. I don't think she's even human.
"Oh, how are we involved in this? Well, you know, we were all hanging around this house. Steve's parents were rarely here, so Steve let us play at his house. It was a party, just between us. But then someone knocked and it was her— she seemed real angry, I only heard her voice because Steve was at the door but it was really scary.
"She kept demanding for Mr. Harrington and didn't believe when Steve told her he wasn't here. Steve told her to go away and shut the door, and the next thing we know—
"She was shouting from the lawn that all the Harringtons were cold-hearted loveless jerks that only care about themselves, and they needed to pay for the damage they do to others. She said 'I'll show you what monster you are, Harrington, and no one will be able to go away until a Harrington blood finds an act of true love, for others than themselves.' Yeah, I think those were the words. When we looked out, she was already gone, and we were like this."
It's messed up, Eddie thinks. They had nothing to do with the drama and was just caught in the crossfire. All because some dude couldn't keep his hands to himself.
"Wait, so what about Mr. Harrington? Didn't he do anything about it? It seems like this is his problem," Eddie fumes.
Lucas just shrugs. "We don't know."
"You don't know."
"Yeah, he never came back. Robin and Nancy have a theory for that, actually. They think that everyone just forgot about us, the Harringtons included. After the curse, we stopped seeing people around Loch Nora, not even around their homes. And the vines just started growing. We think they all left. They forgot about us, and they don't know we're here."
When Lucas says the word 'they', it seems wary, almost sad. It makes Eddie realize that Lucas must've had family and friends outside their group of now, and they perhaps forgot about him. Eddie just wants to hug the little guy, tell him everything's gonna be better, do everything he can to make it better, but doesn't know what to do.
So Eddie just groans internally and pulls his hair, stressed. Maybe he can come up with a plan for the curse. He's great at coming up with something. Lucas said that the curse was that no one would—
"What, are we sharing secrets now?"
They quickly turn their heads towards the source of interruption and Max is standing at the door, with the barest hint of curiosity in her eyes. Lucas of course perks up at the sight of her, and goes into explanation.
"Max, Eddie wanted to know about the curse— and since he's staying with us for a while I thought maybe we could... tell him?"
"Why are you asking me? It's everyone's secret, that means it's yours too. Do whatever you want, dork."
And Max just plops down beside Lucas. Max will punch him (with her claws out) for this, but Eddie thinks they're adorable. Young love, it seems.
But Max is no longer interested in her company, now focused on the wall in front of her.
"So you've been out in the world," she comments. It takes Eddie a moment to realize she's talking to him. "What day is it today?"
The question is carried out in a casual way, but it causes Lucas to gawk at her.
"I thought you said it was all pointless," he breathes out. "You told Dustin he was being an idiot for hanging onto something so meaningless."
Max huffs out a reply. "Well, maybe I found out it might not be."
"Why?"
"Maybe something's going to change."
And she's staring at Eddie like she knows something, something that gave her hope after all those years, but Eddie really doesn't get what she knows. It's all confusing, so he decides to answer what he does know.
"June 23rd, 1986."
There's a slight shift in Max's eyes, but she just hums in acknowledgment as she walks towards the wall. She reaches out, and scratches '6/23/1986' on the wall.
***
Eddie is sitting with his back to Steve's door. In the midst of the conversation, he recalls the odd look Max gave him.
"Hey, Steve?"
"Hm?"
"Does Max ever scare you?"
Steve just scoffs at Eddie's words. "Eddie, she's a kid. And I've known her for a long time. Why would she be scary?"
"I don't know, man. Today she just stared at me like she knew something I didn't and I should have, it was kinda really scary. Does she ever give you that look?"
There's a bit of a pause. Steve eventually clears his throat and answers.
"Uh, yeah, actually. Just yesterday, too. That's the face she has for me, to tell me that I'm being idiotic about something. That I'm missing something obvious. I don't know what brought it on this time, though. But I'm sure we'll find out soon enough."
"Shit, is it really a thing? Did we do something wrong? I don't want to make her upset."
"I don't think you're going to be in a trouble yet, Eddie. Well, at least a permanent trouble. So... just-, try to notice things? That's what Robin tells me to do."
Eddie doesn't know what the things are but he hums anyway. Steve, probably having gone through the conversation in his thoughts again, clears his throat again and adds hastily,
"You know, you can never tell her this but that stare kinda does scares me."
"Right?!"

No.7 — Time
Mike is interested in Eddie's guitar. Eddie catches him sneaking glances at his Sweetheart, and decides to ask.
"You play?" he asks, gesturing towards the guitar.
"Do you?" Mike reflexively talks back, but realizes it's a pointless question and just shakes his head.
"I don't know how to play. I never learned. I wanted to, though."
The kid seems a bit sad and Eddie hates seeing him like that, so he decides there's no harm in offering.
"I could teach you if you want?"
And obviously it's a wrong move, because suddenly Mike tenses up and spits out,
"Yeah, as if I could pick strings with these hooves. It's not gonna work. Nothing ever works here. Thanks, Eddie, but no thanks."
"Whoa man- Mike, calm down. You can still learn, you know. There's no 'one' way to learn playing. I could show you the chords first and then you'll be able to practice it yourself later."
"Yeah, except there's not going to be a later."
Mike's still pissed, but he's gotten calmer. He now just seems a little annoyed at himself as he grumbles. It's a crisis averted and Eddie is relieved, as he secretly tries to come up with other ways to get Mike into playing guitar. It's just a hunch, but he thinks learning to play's gonna be good for Mike.
But then, (because he's got the worst timing ever) Dustin bursts in and shouts,
"Eddie! I need your help, quick!"
***
It's really remarkable, Eddie has to admit.
He stands before a wall in the boys' room, filled with jagged tally marks. Dustin looks proud of the abstract artwork, Mike's gotten tense again, and Lucas just seems tired of it all.
"Well, Dustin, it looks great. Didn't know you had a thing for art." Eddie has no idea what it means.
"What? No, this is not just some art, dude. This is my calendar. You know, I've been counting the days since we got cursed—"
"You mean Max has been counting," Lucas chips in and Dustin rolls his eyes.
"Yes, Lucas, Max has been marking since she has the most fitting claw for the task. But it's my idea, so I've been counting."
Ah, Max. Eddie knows who Max is now. Turns out the panther he met wasn't Steve. Turns out she wasn't even a panther, after all. He's embarrassed himself in front of the puma thinking that she was Steve, and he'd really like to not think about it now. So he asks,
"And about the calendar...?"
This stops Dustin from bantering with Lucas, and he turns to Eddie to give an explanation.
"Yeah, so, I've been counting the days with Max's help. And although I probably missed some dates on the days when we pissed Max off and she didn't want to help and I had to count in my head, I'm pretty sure I've got it close enough, so I wanted to crosscheck."
Eddie is now fully amused. Dustin put a lot of effort into this, he can tell. So he nods, indicating him to go on.
"So... is this May 17th, 1985?"
And wow, he's really close considering everything, so Eddie tries to answer but is cut off by Mike's voice.
"What does it even matter?"
"Huh?" comes Dustin's confused voice.
"What's the point of counting? It does nothing."
Now Dustin seems a bit tense too, and Eddie hopes this doesn't end bad. It seems unlikely.
"Well, Mike-, we need to know when we are in the time. We need to be prepared for when we get back—"
"Yeah, you keep saying 'when we get back' but we won't! That's the thing! We're not getting back, there's no 'later', we're stuck here, stuck in this body because of the stupid curse, while everything goes on without us!"
With that Mike stomps out, and Eddie can't do anything but stare into the now empty spot. Dustin doesn't look so well either, he mutters out a little "fuck," and walks out, too. Eddie hears Lucas sigh.
"So when is it?" Lucas asks a bit after, "Is it May-whatever-Dustin-said?"
"Uh, close enough. June 23rd, 1986. Should-, should we go after them?"
"No, they'll get over it. Usually they're not the ones fighting — it's either Max and Mike or Steve and Robin — but I guess Dustin has too much hope."
And the way he says it makes it feel like Lucas doesn't have much hope either. Eddie wonders what happened all those years before.
"Does he?"
Lucas glances up at his question.
"Do you think Dustin has too much hope, too?"
"Well, we've been like this for almost three decades and the curse is still not close to breaking, is it?"
The curse.
"Why do you think that you can't break the curse? What is it exactly?"

No.6 — Stay
As Erica stated, the kids are nerds — surprisingly, even Erica herself.
So obviously the kids get interested in Eddie's stuff, the fantasy books and Dungeons and Dragons manuals and more (turns out they have been big fans of Lord of the Rings since the 50s). And now Eddie is indulging them in the world of fantasy within and beyond Lord of the Rings — that means, he's started to recount his memorable Dungeons and Dragons campaigns to them in the living room. He loves introducing dnd to kids, loved it when he ran the Hellfire club. He wonders if he can play it with these kids. Hopefully.
Eddie thinks he's got the time for it anyway. The storm is still evergoing, painting the world in a gray hue. He didn't expect to be staying here—for two days already— but he guesses it's nice. The kids. Nancy. Steve.
Steve. Since last night's talk, he already feels close to the guy. Eddie feels curious, about why he won't come out, and he nearly gets bitten by Erica when he spaces out thinking about Steve.
That's when a crow runs in.
It's a weird thing to say in your head. Why is it not flying? And how does a crow look so excited? But the kids all act like this is a normal occurrence, so Eddie decides to stay chill, too.
Not having noticed Eddie yet, (which is surprising because he is the biggest lump there) the crow urgently asks,
"Is the Eddie guy still here?"
And quickly finds him herself.
"Good, you're still here. You're staying. I mean, I'm not forcing you to stay, but I'd really like if you did. For a bit longer. You're like, a crazy good thing that's happened to us. Those dorks love you, Nance likes you okay too, And Steve, Steve likes you, he's in a good mood and that's—"
"ROBIN!"
The crow's rambling is only stopped by Steve's voice yelling from upstairs, and Eddie is honestly impressed. He's never seen anyone talk so fast, without control. The crow, Robin, only turns her head towards the stairs and shouts, "Shut up, dingus! I'm trying to do something here, for all of us!"
That causes Steve to grumble, very loudly, from upstairs and shut the door with a bang. Robin doesn't even flinch and turns back to Eddie.
"So, will you stay? With us, for a while?"
Eddie makes a pondering gesture, as if he's thinking it through thoroughly. The kids twitch beside him, waiting for his answer.
"I mean, I couldn't have left if I wanted to right now—not that I want to anyway— but yeah I'll stay, under one condition. That is, only if you answer this question."
"Shoot."
Eddie turns his expression serious, as if he's asking the most difficult question to ever exist.
"Why are you not flying?"
He doesn't know how it's possible, but Robin gives him an incredulous look.
"Have you-, have you tried flying? It takes up more energy than you can imagine. Like, I flap my wings a bit and they get really tired, it gets sore for days after, so it's best if I walk. Or hitch a ride from Steve and Max."
And that... kind of makes sense, okay. So Eddie shrugs to show he's satisfied with the answer.
"Alright, guess I'll be staying then."
***
"So," Eddie begins, leaning his head on the doorframe.
"I guess I'll be in your hair for a while."
Steve's voice comes from behind the door, maybe as close to it as Eddie is right now.
"I guess you will be."
They are talking with the door between them again, Eddie and Steve. This is the fourth time it's happening, because Eddie couldn't stay away after last night and just came back to the door whenever he could. He kind of likes talking like this, he's never talked through doors and somehow it feels more private, more intimate.
"Eddie, about what Robin said—"
Eddie hums, recalling the talk from before.
"Don't-, don't feel pressured to stay, okay? We, uh, the kids love you here but that doesn't mean you have to stay for us. Do... whatever you want. Go wherever you want."
Eddie gives another hum.
"You know, Steve, thanks for the offer but I like it here. Don't have anywhere else to go, anyway. I was only moving out of Indiana because I finished high school and had nothing to do and nowhere to go. Had no place in mind, actually."
Maybe this is where I was supposed to end up.
"So... yeah. I'm not staying only for the kids but for me, too."
There's a pause.
"Yeah?" It's a soft question, looking for affirmation.
"Yeah," Eddie answers.
And then he hastily adds, "And for you, too— since you like me sooo much, Stevie," just because he loves being a menace.
Eddie hears Steve's groan slip out through the crack and cackles.
"Well, don't worry— I like you too, man."

Ronance medieval fantasy au where nancy is some lord's daughter, supposed to marry steve who is some other lord's son. But nancy doesn't want to get married and settle down, she wants to actively do something for other people.
So just before the wedding, she leaves on her own and becomes a wandering knight. She travels, getting rid of monsters and saving peasants and ladies and more.
Then one day, she has to stop because of the oncoming storm. And guess where she has to stop at? Steve's castle. The castle doesn't turn her away, because you don't do that to guests, but nancy feels uncomfortable because she did kinda bail on the lord's son.
Someone else is also feeling uncomfortable and it's robin, steve's sister. She didn't like nancy when robin first heard about her leaving before the wedding, because steve was a bit heartbroken over the canceled wedding. But coming to meet her in person, she can't help but get mesmerized by nancy and her fierceness. They dance around each other for a while, drawn together but not acknowledging their attraction.
Then something happens. A murder of an entire family. The suspect is caught right away, but nancy senses something is off. She wants to investigate, and robin, who hasn't been able to take her eyes off nancy, offers to help her, guide her through the castle. (Actually it was more like just tagging along but it was appreciated.)
They find out that their suspect is not the murderer, and the real one is on the loose. There are dangers now, having to deal with a serial killer (who has killed more people since the first murder). Nancy is determined to catch the killer, getting close every day. And robin, she is surprisingly good at this investigating and tracking thing.
They finally catch the killer. Everything's over, they high-five each other, there's a joyous glint in robin's eyes, and nancy feels her heart stutter. There's affection bubbling in her heart, she didn't know she'd fall for someone this much. Robin must have sensed nancy's inner disturbance, she gives a curious glance and there's suddenly realization dawning on her, too.
But the storm is finally over.
No longer stuck to the castle, nancy prepares to leave. She's got more people to help, more adventures to find. As she readies her steed, robin comes to nancy to bid her farewell. It's awkward, they both don't say what they want to say, and it's the end. Nancy goes out through the gate and robin's watching her from the castle.
Steve, who has been watching their whole interaction, suggests the idea of robin following nancy. She needs to follow her heart, he'll be okay without her. Robin looks at the gate, back at steve, hugs him tight and runs to pack her stuff.
Just as she rides to the gate, someone is rushing in, and it's nancy. They pause, surprised at each other, and nancy begins, saying she was hoping that robin would want to travel with her a bit. Her eyes are determined but there's also a hint of nervousness. Robin answers, that she was hoping that nancy would take her on her adventures. Nancy's beaming as robin finishes, she walks her steed closer to her, and holds robin's hand.
Robin is now really nervous so she starts rambling on all the mysteries and wonders in the world she had read about. She can't stop talking and nancy huffs, full of affection, and says they'll go through them one by one. Together. This stops robin, and as she blushes nancy gives robin's hand a tug before holding her reigns again. She trots away, and robin gawks at her for a bit before rushing to catch up with her.
So they become travellers, the knight and her lady, visiting the wonders and saving people once again.

No.5 — Door
Eddie hesitates in front of the closed door. With the the hallway lights now turned on he can see that the door is heavily scratched, especially around the doorknob.
Dustin told him that this was Steve's room. He also told Eddie that this mansion was Steve's house originally, so Eddie wonders why he doesn't stay in the master bedroom that Eddie's staying in right now. He gathers up his courage and knocks.
"Hey, um, Steve? This is Eddie, the guy who came to your house last night. Hi, uh- Can I come in?"
He hears someone stumbling behind the door. He waits for a minute, and then asks again.
"Steve?"
"No."
It's almost a shout, and Eddie is taken aback by the fierceness of the response. The rejection is so different from the welcoming responses of the other kids in this house, it seems a little strange. But hey, everyone's different. Maybe Steve doesn't like people.
"Alright, sorry about that. I just wanted to say thanks for... for the meal. You didn't have to. Didn't have to do anything. I'm only a stranger passing by– and honestly, I would've understood if you just made me stay off your house. But you didn't, so... Thank you, man. You're a really nice person."
There's a silence between them. As Eddie accepts that Steve is not going to answer and is about to go back to his room, Steve's voice comes through the closed door.
"The boys like you. Uh, I mean that I should be thanking you, too. They haven't been this excited for a while. Dustin talked my ears off today about how you seemed like a really cool guy. And it's no trouble. You can... stay as long as you want to."
Steve sounds nervous, and Eddie gives him a sheepish grin even though he knows Steve can't see it.
"Thanks, Steve. Dustin told you I seemed cool?"
Steve chuckles at the smugness in Eddie's response.
"Yeah, the little shit don't usually admit that kind of thing, it's a real compliment."
"That's nice. For the record, I think Dustin's a cool kid, too. Smart kid. You his brother?"
"Brother? No, it does feel like it, though. They're all the kids I babysit. Well, used to, I guess."
Steve's voice sounds a little pensive, so Eddie does what he's good at doing: he spins out a tale to get Steve's mind off whatever he's thinking —it's probably about being cursed and stuck in time— and talks about befriending freshmen who get lost in the social hierarchy of high school and the troubles it caused. He can't see what's going on behind that door but imagines Steve being attentive to his story, hopefully finding it amusing.
After the story, there's another silence, but it's a more comfortable one than from before. Eddie realizes the time is quite late, he didn't notice it getting much darker.
"Steve?"
"Yeah?"
"I'm gonna go back to the room now, it's late and you should rest too."
"Oh."
"Yeah, so... Goodnight, Stevie."
"...Goodnight, Eddie."
***
What he sees as he enters his room is a black kitten padding on his stuff. It's so much smaller than the other kids that Eddie guesses the kitten is younger than them. And the little kitten looks so fluffy with the softest fur, with bright eyes... Eddie can't help himself but let out an "aww".
"If you 'aww' at me again, I'll bite your ankle off so hard you'll lose your foot."
Okay, he did not expect that.
"The nerds were all acting like you were some kind of a hero, so I came to see what this was about. Turns out, you are a nerd, too. Well, even a bigger nerd. No wonder why they like you, nerd."
He was so not expecting such comments. Eddie gapes, trying to come up with a rebuttal—
At the same moment, Lucas scurries in and shouts, "Erica!"

*cw: mention of dead animal (but it's not a lot and pretty similar to what we see in canon st)*
No.4 — Honeycomb
Turns out all the food are definitely inedible. Eddie is quite surprised, really. He's never seen anything so shriveled. There's not even mold on the remaining traces of food; they probably dehydrated or died of old age. Seeing the evidence of years passed by reminds Eddie that the kids should have grown up and got out of here, instead of being stuck here with dried up tomatoes. He wonders what really happened.
Said kids, right now, are debating on what the decay of food means for them. Dustin seems excited by the discovery, making up theories on the differences of food and them. Now, Eddie is just sad and hungry, as he tries to remember what's in the van. He wonders if the kids have an umbrella—he doesn't want to get soaked in the rain again for making the trip to the van.
"Guys, what's going on?" A voice asks from nearby.
Eddie has to consciously tilt his head down to see who's speaking. It's a hedgehog, and she's trotting into the kitchen.
The kids all launch into explanations.
"Nancy, did you know not everything's stuck in time? We just found out—"
"Nancy, we don't have any food! They're all gone!"
"And Eddie doesn't have anything to eat!"
At this moment, Eddie chimes in, "And Eddie probably will be find to find something from the van, no worries there."
Nancy the hedgehog turns to Eddie. "You sure? You know, you might have to stay here for a bit more, the storm's not going away." Eddie gives her a thumbs up. "Well, if there's nothing to eat in the van, I'm sure we'll be able to figure something out."
***
"Honeycomb."
"Yup."
"You carry Honeycomb with you in your van."
"Yes, indeed."
"Why?"
After a thorough search through his belongings, Eddie found his saviour, the cereal. While he was at it, he also brought in some of his stuff, too. So now, he's munching on his Honeycomb while the kids poke through his stuff. And Nancy is staring down at Eddie—he doesn't know how that's even physically possible— disapprovingly. She gives a small sigh.
"I'll talk to Steve. He might know where to find something more... healthy. Or at least sustainable."
Eddie remembers the late night exchange between Dustin and Steve, and how the mysterious Steve didn't seem to like the idea of Eddie staying at the mansion.
"Uh, do you- do you have to? I can eat my Honeycomb you know, I like them. That's why I carry them around. So there's no need to—"
Nancy gives Eddie a weird look.
"By the look of it, I don't think the cereal's going to last long enough, Eddie. If you're worried about bothering Steve, I'm sure it'll be fine. He's nice."
It does not help with Eddie's worries. You can be nice and also hate the guy who's lounging freely in your home. But Eddie manages an "Okay."
***
By evening, there's a knock on the door. Eddie gets up from the bed where he was scribbling down ideas (may or may not have been inspired by his recent experiences) and opens the door.
"Please don't be scared."
It's Nancy, and she's perched on—
Eddie's heart nearly jumps out of its cage. She's perched on a big, possibly predatory feline. Maybe panther? Like the movie the Pink Panther? Eddie is freaking out and Nancy's feline companion just stares at Eddie with an unimpressed look.
"I'm not scared," Eddie croaks out.
"What? I didn't even-," Nancy sounds confused, but she realizes that Eddie's eyes are fixed on her friend. "Oh. No, that's not what I meant. I was going to say that Steve got you something to eat, but it won't be what you are used to eating... So please don't be scared."
The feline (maybe this is Steve?) breaks their staring contest and focuses on Nancy, so Eddie does the same.
"If you keep saying that I might actually be scared."
***
The 'food' does make him actually scared.
It's a rabbit. A dead one. Eddie wants to panic, but Nancy's looking at him with nervous eyes so he just lets out a thanks.
They're in the kitchen now, and the panther is now gone, after carrying the scrap of tarp that had the rabbit inside to the kitchen. Eddie heaves out a sigh.
He's scared, he's hungry, he'll be able to cook ...this.

No.3 — Breakfast
Eddie is reminded once again that he's somehow living in a world where fantasy is reality as he opens his eyes to see a deer and a squirrel stare at him. They also look very young like Dustin, but Eddie's not entirely sure since he doesn't know how to tell animals' ages.
"So how did you even find this place? Who are you? What do you want?" The deer-boy asks.
Eddie doesn't know how, but he thinks that he might have a talent for reading animal–faces. He can see that even though the deer boy tries to sound suspicious, there's an excited curiosity seeping out; and although the squirrel—boy? girl?— haven't said anything yet, there's guarded hesitance right there. Eddie guesses he'll have to try to ease their guards a bit.
"Well, hello to you, too. I'm Eddie," he says with a fake offended tone.
The kids exchange their glances as Eddie introduces himself. Hopefully, they realized they haven't even introduced themselves. (Eddie would really like to stop referring to them as deer and squirrel in his head.)
"My name's Lucas," the squirrel starts, and with a pat on the head he introduces his companion. "And this is Mike. We didn't mean to sound interrogating. We only—"
"We haven't seen other people for ages. We were just curious."
"And surprised. Really."
Enthusiastic nods follow, and Eddie is reminded of Dustin. Probably they're brothers or friends.
***
Apparently, the kids are friends. Lucas and Mike accompany Eddie as he goes downstairs, and Dustin joins them from the hallway. They all trail after Eddie, chattering, as he heads to the kitchen.
"Okay, quick question: Is it okay if I have breakfast at this place? I don't want to be more of a burden but I just realized I haven't had anything else from yesterday's lunch."
At that moment, all the kids stop talking.
"Does this mean no? I mean, I get it. It's cool that you let me stay—"
"Yes!" Dustin sputters. Eddie has no idea what he means.
"So... 'Yes' as in 'yes, it means no' or 'Yes' as in 'yes, it's okay'?"
"I meant 'yes, it's okay.' But theoretically. Theoretically yes."
"Theoretically," Eddie repeats, "How can there be a theoretical answer to breakfast? I'm getting confused."
"I thought Dustin explained we were cursed," Lucas nudges Dustin with his tiny paw.
"I did! I just didn't want to dump all the tiny details on whether we could eat or not on Eddie when he was drenched and tired!"
"You can't eat?" Now Eddie is confused and worried. They are kids, is this allowed?
"We can eat," Mike interjects, "We just don't have to. We've been in the same state since we got turned, and it's the same with hunger. We're not hungry. And it's kind of hard to eat pasta with hooves."
"So no one really goes to the kitchen anymore, and we don't know if there's food left or not."
"Or if it's even edible."
Eddie sighs — the chance of finding something to eat seems low. He'll probably have to rummage through his van to find food. But he heads towards the kitchen first, just in case.
