sirius finding out about regulus' death and all he can think of is how he failed to save his little brother three times. once when he ran away and didn't take reg with him, twice when reg got the mark, and thrice when reg died trying to do the right thing. it's all he can think of for months, it wrecks him emotionally and physically.
that's why, when james and lily got killed, he didn't care about getting caught anymore. he didn't care, because he failed to save both of his brothers, four times in total, so he knew he'd deserve whatever happened to him while going after peter.
