What are your headcanons on Galra tastes in fiction? I know aliens, in general, seem to like really showy stuff, like the Voltron Show.

CanonThere are two forms of storytelling mentioned: mythology and (probably embellished)historical events. Zarkon tells Honerva the story of Kaltor, which he explicitly states is mythology. Dayak instructs Hunk on the historical account of how the warring tribes of Daibazaal became one. The Archivist speaks in detail of the rulers past and some have titles like Vrigg the Great which sounds like a mix between history and mythology. HeadcanonThe people of Daibazaal enjoyed the pastime of verbal storytelling as well as movies/tv shows about their glorious King, Paladins of Voltron, conquerors of the past and perhaps even the encouragement of expanding relationships with aliens. However, once their planet was destroyed and the Empire was established, a lot of those records were lost with time or destroyed. Families passed the stories down verbally, but children were told never to speak of them in public. Written records of peace time were forbidden with the penalty of death. Zarkon squelched any stories involving friendly relations with other planets and the legends of the Paladins of Voltron. Notice that none of the Empire-affiliated Galra speak of wanting to be like their heroes in mythology. This is a staple of warrior and tribal races in sci-fi. The Klingons constantly mention their ancestors, but this is surprisingly lost in the Galra Empire. Zarkon has been on the throne for so long that his accounts of conquering became myth, history AND present news. 10,000 years is more than enough time to wipe out the myths and stories of Daibazaal from the people's memories.The approved media in the Capital is highly steeped in propaganda. These stories bathe the Empire in a radiant light. They have soap operas, romance and action stories seeded with messages promoting how to be a proper Galra. These are highly regulated and differing opinions are prohibited.However, in Morvok, Varkon, Sal and the Warden's case, being away from the Capital and cultural pressure allows them to choose what they want to watch and participate in. Varkon had little trouble loving the paladins' show as much as he loves Zarkon.

Returning from Long Absense

There were plans to move this somewhere else on January 1st, but there is really no reliable alternative right now that offers site stability and social network visibility. So GL is here to stay for a while.

With the series complete and nothing on the official horizon, it's time to start making some headcanons based on the little info and details we were given. I'd be happy to share the ones I have so far. A few asks were sent asking my opinion on a couple topics and I was hoping these would have been expanded upon in S8. While they were not answered in canon, new little sprinkles of Galra culture and details were revealed. Some of the asks, like currency and holidays, I will have to think on before answering.

But feel free to send asks! Requests for references are welcome, but I am working on commissions, cosplay, zines and some other Galra related projects at the moment. Smaller requests like "pirate daggers" are easier to do than entire collections.

do you have any links or videos of all galra talking? i like to explore their different voices and accents, like ulaz, prorok, antok, etc.

The amazing user GenerationWest on Youtube took it upon themselves to make an hour long compilation of nearly every voice from Season 1-8. It even includes background Galra with one or two speaking lines.

Censorship and controlling the citizens happens during Zarkon’s 10,000 year reign, but it will not be tolerated here on tumblr. Four Six new names were added to the List of Names. There were so many new Galra and look changes this season that it will take some time to screenshot all of them.

Random question but i need help. Im thinking of making some galra oc characters but i dont know how or what i should name them as. What ethnic type of names sound galra like to you? What i mean is where should i look to come up with some names. Any ideas?

A lot of the names are made up. However, there are a few that use real names. Ranveig, Janka, and Bogh(surname for a crew member) are a few examples and each hails from different countries. Out of respect for other cultures, I would steer clear of using real names. Here are some naming patterns that can help you make up your own names! 

Most end in K, N or G

Most include A, E, K, N, O, or R

Least used are F, J, or M

Never starts with C, F, or O

Never uses Q or W

Here is the full list of Galra names given up to S7. Try mixing and matching parts of each name until you find one you like. Just be sure to google it or you might unintentionally end up with a buff warlord named Ranveig. Apparently, Ranveig is a variant spelling of Rannveig, a cute girl’s name of Norse origin. :) If this was intentional, much applaud to the designers!

Hello! Do you guys take suggestions for posts? Cuz going through the galra tag repeatedly shows me that a lot of peeps don't pay attention to anatomical differences between humans and galra~ (the most frequent offence is arm-length / it's a small thing but I die inside anyway) I know @radioactivesupersonic did a meta post forever ago that touched on it, but maybe you guys could take a crack at it? Also maybe BoM armor for a future clothing post? Love u guys have a great day!!!

Hi there! Yes, suggestion posts are welcome! Their body proportions are easy to miss or dismiss as an art style.  I can show you many examples where I messed up on this. XD But when up against humans, it is very clear. Their legs, torsos, arms, and neck lengths can vary, but they are always elongated. Good idea! I may elaborate on this in detail sometime in the future.

 @yumirei also wrote a good post showing the differences between Galra and Humans. Do check it out!

Let me say this is some dedication and it is beautiful. I love reading ppl ask about the Galra. The Galra side of the fandom is the most chill ,if you have any more headcanons I would love to see what you post about the empire. Keep up the good work.

Good question! It was said during an interview, but I can not remember which one since Season 3 was so long ago.  There are a lot of interviews to go through, but I’ll keep looking for it.

I am charmed to see all the asks about my headcanons! It’s nice that obsessing about the Galra is useful outside of my own enjoyment. :)

Headcanons & Asks

The purpose of this blog is to provide drawing resources and references to character behavior in the show for fellow fans. But I don’t mind sharing a few headcanons that have at least some basis on scenes in the show. Those will be tagged as #headcanon. The Coalition Handbook arrived today, so fingers crossed on some good Galra content no matter how small. 

I will happily accept asks, just be patient as my time is limited. I may not have an opinion on some things. In those cases, I’ll probably point you to Star Trek’s Klingons world or a good fan post for ideas. If the question is sexual in nature, it will be put under cut and marked #nsfw.

Kitty Galra? Vampire Galra?

My headcanons come from the angle of space vampires due to their clothing, sucking the life out of planets and Nosferatu-like appearence. But I also support(and draw) cute and fluffy stuff too! Of course, it will be within the context of their rigid-we-regulate-what-you-taste society. Someone’s going to the vet if they start purring loudly in Zarkon’s throne room—if you know what I’m saying. But behind closed doors, all bets are off! So no worries if you like kitty/bat/chinchilla Galra! Just love Galra, friends! ❤
