Here is a snippet from a WIP I’ve had stuck in my head for a little bit:
“Will I ever see you again?”
His voice was hopeful, and she couldn’t help the tears that dripped down her cheeks as she watched his smile grow smaller until his jaw fell slack. She didn’t have to answer him, he knew before he even asked. But he had to hear it from her, he couldn’t bear not listening to the sound of his dear friend. She sniffled once, successfully grabbing his attention, and sighed. She reached forward and grabbed his hands, rubbing the tops of them with her thumbs.
“I can’t be certain,” Ahsoka finally spoke, her words coming out of shaky lips. The end of the war was upon them, and she couldn’t begin to think of what the future held. She was so tired, and much too young to have been fighting in a war. They both were, she realized, Rex was made for war and war only, what would his purpose be now? She didn’t like the thoughts that followed the question, the light hold she had on the Captain’s hands tightening. He raised a brow at the grip, and took her hands into his own.
“This is goodbye then...” Ahsoka flinched, noting that Rex wasn’t asking. He knew, he knew from the moment they landed on solid ground that she would leave leave him behind. Where she would go, he could only image. He swallowed down the lump in his throat, sighed, and squeezed her hands. “I’ll...I’ll miss you.”
“And I you,” She let go of Rex’s hands and with a sad smile pulled him close to her. He stood awkwardly, only for a moment, before returning the embrace, squishing her tightly to his chest. He breathed out his nose, not daring to open his mouth, as he let the tears brimming his eyes fall onto her shoulder. “May the Force be with you.”
“Mm,” Pulling away, Rex saw Ahsoka was in the same boat as he, eyes misty and lips turned downward. She sighed, and brought a hand to his cheek to wipe away his tears. He leaned into the touch, bringing his hand up to hold her’s against him. He wasn’t ready, he lost so many, it felt like he was losing her now. Don’t leave...like everyone else.
Rex nearly jumped in his boots when her hand was replaced by her lips, affectionate, relaxing him ever so slightly. She lingered, the exhale from her nose cool to his cheek, and when she finally pulled away her eyes held such grief that made his heat clench. It was time for her to leave, and for Rex to figure out where to go next.
“May the Force be with you.” He repeated to her, and watched as Ahsoka leaved in the escape pod he so carefully supplied for whatever journey awaited her.
