Tickets To Paradise - Chapter 4
--------------------------
Relationships: BTS ensemble and Fem!Reader
Summary: The concert is here!!
Warnings: lots of people, holy crap
Word Count: 2645
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Part 4
I would never forget the immense power of the concert. The speakers were so loud, the vibrations shook my chest and radiated down through my limbs, leaving a feeling of euphoria and otherworldliness.
The multitude lifted in welcome the instant the boys entered the stage. Smurf and I were pushed up to the barricade as fans moved as close as they could. We grabbed each other and screamed out loud, waving our light sticks and phones, instantly swept up in the utter adoration of those seven precious men.
It felt totally surreal, almost dream-like. The colors of the ocean from the ARMY bombs, the answering calls of the audience as the boys teased and sang. The familiar songs took up a place in my heart, bubbling to the surface in the form of joyful, agonizing tears. Smurf bounced and sang next to me, pouring her own level of devotion, waving her stick, pressed up against the barricade.
During “Fake Love”, Yoongi came up right in front of us and raised his arms, a huge gummy smile spreading across his face when the audience responded with screams and arms waving back. He was decked out in white skinny jeans, converse, and a loose black t-shirt sporting the words “CHILL” across the chest in white font. Grinning widely, he lifted the mic to his face and paused, eyes directly on me.
I froze mid bounce, light stick raised, eyes wide.
Yoongi’s eyes flicked down my form to the barricade and back up, tongue flicking over his lower lip, what , then over to Smurf, his mouth lifting in a tilted smirk. Continuing the song with the other members, he pointed a bejeweled hand at Smurf’s shoulder and nodded. “Nice!” he mouthed at us. Her shoulder was shimmering under the blacklights, the UV ink showing bright along the edges of the flowers and highlighting the water droplets and waves.
Smurf laughed and bounced, waving her outstretched hands up at him, screaming, “She did it!! She did it!!”
Yoongi laughed and his brows furrowed in confusion, pushing his black hair away from his face. I grinned and pointed to her tattoo, then pointed to myself. “I did it!!”
“You did it??” he asked into the mic, to my utter shock, pointing to the tattoo and then at me. His question bounced out of the speakers and I could feel my face burn.
“Eh?” came a response from one of the others. Namjoon came over while the rest of the boys started chasing each other around with water bottles, laughing like adorable idiots. How they managed to keep singing in tune was beyond me and incredibly impressive.
Yoongi said something in Korean in a cute, excited voice and pointed to Smurf and I. Namjoon peeked over Yoongi’s shoulder and his eyes lit up.
“Wow!” his low voice echoed into the arena. Eyes wide and filled with curiosity, the clumsy goof leaned over the edge of the stage to get closer. “That’s so cool!!” he exclaimed. Yoongi exclaimed in a fond, exasperated voice as he pulled Namjoon away, eyes still fixed on us, amused, like he was used to pulling Namjoon from danger on a regular basis.
The fans around us started scooching closer, straining to see what the two were looking at. There were a lot of wows and exclamations in English and a few other languages I didn’t recognize. Smurf and I smiled so wide, our bellies fluttering at the unexpected attention.
“Holy shit, you did that??”
My attention was brought back up to the stage, Yoongi still staring with those cat-like eyes, Namjoon pointing gleefully at us.
“Sorry, what?” I laughed, yelling as loud as I could, tilting my right ear towards him.
The commotion caught the attention of Jimin and Taehyung, bringing them over to sprinkle their elders with the rest of their water.
“You did that? You tattooed her?” Namjoon spoke into the mic, a huge smile of awe on his face, the audience screaming. I suddenly remembered Namjoon’s appreciation for the arts and grinned even wider. Jimin’s face popped up like a meerkat behind Yoongi and Tae peeked around Namjoon’s wide shoulder. Their eyes widened and they both went “Whaaa!”
“Oh, yeah!” I responded, their eyes switching fast to me. My heart dropped into my stomach. Oh my god , they had such piercing gazes . “I designed it and tattooed her!” I shouted, nodding, giving them two thumbs up, well one and half considering my one hand held my light stick. My smile was starting to make my cheeks hurt.
Namjoon, Jimin, and Tae all exclaimed, impressed and excited, for some reason I couldn't fathom, but I laughed and nodded back with a huge grin.
Jin called over to them, laughing as he waved them back. The four smiled at us and gave us finger hearts, bouncing and pointing at the tattoo and mouthing “That’s so cool, great job!” before returning to the middle of the stage to continue their song and dance.
Smurf and I looked at each other and screamed, free hands linking as we bounced in ecstatic excitement over what had just happened. Holy fuck, Min Yoongi and Kim Namjoon had just lost their collective shit over my work. And Tae and Jimin had said it was so good!! I needed a drink!
I returned my attention to the group and blushed to the roots of my hair. The four wore huge, adoring smiles on their faces as they watched us, spinning and dancing to the beat.
~~~~~~
After the next few songs, the boys headed backstage during intermission to take a much needed break. They took their turns running back to the main stage from the peninsula. Namjoon jogged next to Jungkook, whispering something in his ear, and pointed in our direction. Jungkook perked up and looked over at us, eyes widening adorably, bunny teeth showing in a big smile. Namjoon glanced over and nodded at us, lifting his mic in salute as they all jogged to the backstage and I swear I may have peed a little.
The audience cheered for a bit, then settled down as the music quieted and a music video cued up on the screen.
Smurf and I waited for the crowd to step back to their seats for a cool down before we slumped down into our own, panting and pushing our sweaty hair back from our faces.
“What the fuck was that?” I asked, sipping on my water bottle, eyes glued onto the entrance to the stage where the boys had disappeared.
“I don’t even know! I’m on cloud nine, holy shit, they noticed my tattoo!! ”
I glanced sideways at her and nearly choked. The bitch was totally blissed out, eyes glazed over, chest heaving, hands waving lazily at her face. The teenage girl next to her squealed and they started a convo on how amazing it was to be noticed and how incredible the tattoo was.
My attention drifted, heartbeat slowing. Cold air was blasted into the arena and I sighed in relief. Under all the lights and moving bodies, the heat had spiked something awful. I don’t know how the guys handled it with the leather pants and multiple layers. Oh, maybe we’ll get some leather pants action...
Movement caught my eye from the side of the massive screen and I guffawed out a cackle.
Jungkook’s adorable face was peeking out, Jimin’s cute little face just below him. They looked cartoon-like, eyes wide, mouths moving as they talked to each other. The two were so tiny compared to the behemoth screen, I’m surprised I even caught them.
But my heart stopped when I realized they were gesturing in our direction. Jungkook looked like a kid at Christmas, until he was pulled backstage, Jimin jerking back soon after.
I could only stare, cold butterflies traveling my whole body. What on earth? Did they really like my work that much?
~~~~~~
Soon after, the concert started up again and the place exploded. The boys returned with gusto; new outfits, lethal hip thrusts, precious finger hearts, beautiful passionate singing, hardcore rap. It proceeded to blow us all away again.
What really stole my heart, and confused the hell out of me , was that the boys seemed to steer more towards our part of the stage. I don’t know if I was imagining it, but now all of them seemed transfixed by Smurf’s tattoo, and consequently, us . While not entirely ignoring the other tens of thousands of fans, within the next hour and a half, each of the members popped up in front of us and showed us special attention.
Jimin sang “Serendipity” to us (oh my god ), Jin blew us kisses and bowed and giggled his precious laugh, Namjoon nodded and winked and spoke words of encouragement, Jungkook sang Euphoria our way, Yoongi grinned and brought the crowd’s attention to the tattoo ( holy shit, they showed it on the big screen!! ), Hobi danced and sent his blinding sunshine smile, Tae made adorable silly faces ending with his darling boxy grin.
My heart nearly exploded each time. I blew kisses, sang, danced, and laughed right along with them, smiling at their delighted faces. And Smurf did her own thing right beside me, returning all the love and admiration.
~~~~~~~
The energy from the crowd was breathtaking as the end of the concert drew nearer. The lyrics poured flawlessly into the crowd and the crowd brought it right back. The vibrations ebbed down into the foundation of the stadium until the entire place rang with such joy and adoration that I felt lighter than air.
The finale was incredible. Lights softened, lasers disappeared, loud booming bass settled. The entire place turned into a sea of purple as “We Are Bulletproof: Eternal” began over the speakers. The audience screamed in response, quieting down to sing along with the boys as they serenaded us with their love song to their beloved ARMYs.
Smurf and I swayed along with the music, tears streaming down our cheeks, faces lifted up to watch the Bangtan Boys sing their exhausted hearts out.
Between saying goodbye and pouring their love into the crowd, the boys snuck in their own farewell gestures to Smurf and I.
Jimin and Jungkook blew us a kiss, which we returned. Jin and Tae gave us a heart with their cupped hands, Smurf and I making our own heart in return. Namjoon pressed both hands to his chest and smiled his dimply smile at us, which we blushed and blew kisses back at. Which of course made him duck his head and blush. Yoongi tipped his water bottle our way and smiled a soft gummy smile as we tipped invisible shot glasses in his direction in cheers and pretended to down them in one shot. Hobi actually knelt down at the edge of the stage and grabbed my hand over the barricade and kissed the back of it. I nearly went deaf at the screams.
~~~~~~~~~
Our ears rang and our eyes watered as we collapsed down into our seats when the show ended. The spotlights dimmed as the overhead lights popped on, flooding the stadium in bright light once again.
People cheered as they slowly made their way out, kids singing and laughing, everyone chattering and showing their friends their phones and reliving the incredible experience.
Smurf and I sat there, eyes dazed, staring at the stage without really seeing it. A stupid smile fixed itself on our faces and we giggled breathy laughs in disbelief.
“Holy.”
“Shitballs.” Smurf finished, pushing back her mess of dark curls, hair spray be damned at this point, before taking a huge gulp of water.
“Did… did that really happen?” I asked, voice hoarse from the singing and screaming and shouting, pushing back my own mess of strands.
“I don’t know. I’m still trying to process Namjoon almost falling on top of us.” We both burst into laughter, then whined when our throats twinged in protest.
“Fuck, cough drops. Where are the cough drops?” Smurf dropped her light stick in my lap as she dove into her bag, my eyes blinking tiredly as the adrenaline slowly seeped out of my system.
We sat there, smiling as people stopped to shake our hands and laugh and squeal, admiring the tattoo and asking for pictures. We were floored but readily accepted, posing with a bunch of people like we were celebrities or something. Even doing stupid poses and acting like morons, to the glee of the everyone. We even got huge hugs from a few of the friends we had made while waiting in line, bouncing and laughing as we relived what had happened with the boys.
After an hour and a half, the place was mostly cleared out. The last people wanting pictures with us waved goodbye and we collapsed back in our seats.
“God, my legs are killing me. Thank god we have the day off tomorrow,” I moaned, stretching out my legs in front of me, wiggling my sore toes in my flats.
“Mm, totally. I don’t wanna move. Mooooom, carry meeeee,” Smurf whined, nuzzling her head into my shoulder.
“Good lordt, woman, I can barely carry my own ass, how am I supposed to carry you??”
Smurf’s scathing retort was cut short by a large shadow falling over us. Looking up, we were surprised to see one of the beefy security dudes standing there, hands on hips.
“Ladies, you need to come with me,” he said in a deep voice, face tense, non negotiable.
“Oh shit,” Smurf whispered, staring up at the guy.
I looked around quickly. “Uh, shit, sorry, did we do something wrong?” I asked, starting to panic. “Were we not supposed to take pictures with all those people?”
The guy gave me a once over, making me a bit nauseous, and his mouth tightened. “Just come with me.”
I glanced at Smurf, her eyes widening at me in worry. We obeyed, quietly gathering our things and stuffing them into our bags. Hefting them onto our backs, we quietly followed the stranger, my eyes hyper focused on the sleek, black firearm tucked into its holster on the guy’s hip.
Oh my god, we are in some deep shit…
~~~~~~
The security officer took us around the stage to a small door leading back into a long hallway running parallel to the main stage. The floor was shiny grey, walls a comforting blue as we were led down, doors to our left were labeled “Dressing Room” with a number assigned to each one. It seemed almost fancy, with the soft lighting, white door frames, silver door knobs. A few people milled about, some with headsets and clipboards, some with phones attached to their ears. They all looked exhausted and ready to call it a night.
We were led past a pair of restrooms and a loading dock to a doorway marked “Stairs”. Security Guy paused in front of it and turned to us. I flinched back a step, breath caught in my throat.
But his frosty gaze melted into a smile and he released the tension in his shoulders.
“I’m sorry about that. I had to go by the books to get you ladies back here before I could tell you what was really going on.”
Smurf tensed, wary as she watched him closely. “So, what’s going on?”
“I was asked by Namjoon to bring you up to the catering room. The guys would like to have a word. It will be about another…. “ He paused and glanced down at his Apple watch. “About another 45 minutes til they’re finished with their meet and greets. Then they’ll most likely want to shower. But they will have your full attention afterwards.”
I blinked. Then blinked again.
“I’m sorry, what? ”
He smiled knowingly.
“BTS would like to have a private word with you and your friend. Do you accept?”

Tickets to Paradise - Chapter 3
--------------------------
Relationships: BTS ensemble and Fem!Reader
Summary: Reader and her Smurf get ready and arrive at the massive concert!
Warnings: crowds, slight panic
Word Count: 1915
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Part 1 Part 2 Part 3
Friday night.
The night before the concert.
I was plucked, waxed, and buffed to perfection.
And still felt like I was gonna throw up any minute.
Smurf and I had the contents of our purses spilled out onto my living room carpet, the clear plastic backpacks for the concert sitting close by, ready to be stuffed full. Exhausted from a long week, and a few ink touch-ups I had for some of my favorite clients, the anticipation and excitement fueled our tired bones as we sorted through our various accouterments.
“I dunno, should I take my eyebrow kit?” she asked, studying the little pouch, “Life Goes On” playing softly in the background.
I stared at her perfectly shaped and waxed brows and lifted a brow of my own.
“Are you expecting a wild hair to suddenly sprout mid concert?” I asked with a snort.
She huffed and gave me an exasperated smirk, tossing the kit in the “stay at home” pile.
Amid glasses of wine and our Chill BTS playlist, we managed to get our shit together and fill mostly the necessities in the clear bags. Emergency makeup, feminine products, mace (you never know), list of emergency contacts, eye drops, tissues, cough drops for sore throats, foam ear plugs, tiny first aid kits, bottles of water, portable battery chargers for our phones, ARMY light sticks, extra batteries for the light sticks, tickets, snacks, wallets, mints, and a space for any merch we may purchase.
After we deemed the bags completed, we collapsed back onto my huge couch and giggled uproariously.
“You know,” I wheezed after the giggles had fizzled out and the stark realization hit. “We may have to send your uncle a gift basket.”
Smurf choked and gurgled out a wine-flavored laugh. “You know, flowers just won’t do it, considering his rather…. hefty line of work.”
We both cringed at each other, refusing to mention the possible sketchy *coughUndergroundcough* connections her uncle had that made it possible to score the tickets.
After a moment of lamented silence, I chortled and smacked the couch’s arm rest. “A gift basket, black and grey tissue paper. With various firearms displayed in flower-like formation–” I waved my arms obnoxiously in graceful patterns.
Smurf fell off the couch, shrieking at that image.
Ok, we might have been a little bit drunk.
~~~~~~~
Today was the day. My alarm purred loudly in my ear, “We Are Bulletproof: Eternal” lulling me awake. It usually took me a few minutes (try more than a few snooze button smashes) to drag my ass awake, but today I bounced instantly up out of bed and stumbled to the living room. Smurf usually goes back to her own place across the hall but last night we were just too keyed up.
“SMURF! WAKE UP, HO!!!”
My poor best smurf, all snuggled up on my couch after a night of preparation and soft giggles and imaginations and waaaay too much wine, jolted up off the couch and instantly face planted into the carpet.
I charged right past her, zooming for the kitchen. “Ya dead??” I yelled back at her.
“Yah, man,” came the muffled reply.
After a few cups of coffee and tea, (we really didn’t need the caffeine or sugar but hey, routine is important), we started the monumental task of preparing ourselves for the night of a lifetime. Well, the night of a lifetime for us poor, small town, bumpkin mice.
Perhaps tonight we would get a chance to meet our own version of Prince Charming… pffffffftt.
~~~~~~~
“Ok, got everything?” Smurf asked, patting down her long curls, wiping at a painted eyebrow.
“Yeah, I think I’m good,” I responded, hiking up my black skinny jeans and settling my toes into my blue ballet flats.
We stood on the stoop of my apartment building, colorful flowers and vines decorating the exterior amid the green shrubbery.
We had hailed an Uber to take us a few blocks away from the venue, knowing the line would be ridiculous. I had slipped in a pair of Dr. Scholl’s gel inserts for comfort. Smurf had done the same with her heeled boots.
Taking a moment, I admired my dearest friend. Hair fluffed and curled, sprayed within an inch of its life. Face done up with flawless contour and shimmery eyeshadow, highlights glittering on the tip of her button nose and cheekbones. Tight black blouse hanging off of her shoulders, white ripped skinny jeans hugged her shapely legs, and black ankle heeled boots finished the image. My tattoo flashed bright and colorful down her bare shoulder to hide down inside her blouse, blue and purple hydrangeas swirling in aqua blue water, shimmering with water droplets in realistic style. She looked ready to take on the world.
I glanced down at myself and smiled. My hair hung straight down my back, the front pulled up away from my face. Soft pink sweater hung off my frame, collarbones exposed. Stretchy black skinny jeans hugging me down to my petite flats. I felt righteous. I felt like me. I felt comfortable.
A tiny voice echoed in the back of my mind…. You are not enough…
But Smurf’s hand grabbed mine and I straightened my shoulders, shoving the insecurity deep down. Not today, Satan.
Both of our ears glittered with jewelry, BTS themed matching our necklaces. Silver rings decorated almost every one of my fingers and shiny bracelets hung off of Smurf’s wrists.
We were ready. We could take on the world.
When the Uber arrived, the cute driver rolled his eyes playfully at us as he buzzed down the passenger window and leaned over to peer up at us.
“Let me guess,” he grinned. “BTS?”
~~~~~~~~~~
The drive down to the Big City didn't take as long as I thought. Adam, the driver, enjoyed our company and even let us take control of the music, singing along with us as we bounced and laughed. I was incredibly thankful for him, he knew just what to say to distract us from our nerves.
When we arrived just north of the massive stadium, our jaws collectively dropped. Search lights shining a brilliant purple lit up the darkening skies. Digital billboards repeated ads displaying various BTS members modeling for different products, flashy and beautiful over the streets. The huge, undulating line of ARMYs leading to the massive stadium doors curled around the roped waiting areas into the streets, past the place where we had planned to stop, and back into the distance, police directing pedestrians and traffic. Small vendors had set up places along the way, selling adult drinks and popsicles, snacks of all kinds. Gleeful laughter and singing echoed all around us. It was… incredible. I couldn’t remember the last time I had been surrounded by such a pulsing, positive mass of energy.
Smurf and I nervously glanced at each other, hiking up our backpacks as we exited the car after paying with a generous tip, feeling extremely out of our element. Adam called to us and reached for our hands out of the window.
“Knock 'em dead, ladies. You’re gonna do great,” he grinned up at us, wiggling our hands back and forth.
“Hell yes,” Smurf replied, the confidence returning to her stance and she shook Adam’s hand, both of us thanking him for a kick ass ride.
We strode hand in hand to the end of the line, about 20 blocks away from the stadium, wondering if we should have shown up earlier. The setting sun lit the skyscrapers surrounding us in a warm glow, the air cooling with the evening breeze. It was surreal and the air smelled of food and shimmered with electric excitement.
It took hours to reach the massive doors and our legs were exhausted. But the closer we got, the more hyped we felt and the pain was nothing compared to the images playing in our heads.
“Dude, I wonder if we’ll get to see a close up of Jungkookie’s abs,” Smurf wondered, absentmindedly fanning herself with a round fan covered in an adorable image of Jimin’s sweet duck-lipped face. During our wait time, we were able to stock up on merch: fans, stickers, cds, cute BT21 purses, cute earrings, tshirts, and an adorable pair of shoes that barely fit in my backpack. I even got to pass out a few of my business cards when people asked about Smurf’s tattoo, complete with my email and website. We were about 6 feet from the doors now, the line slowly moving along.
The younger girls in front of us giggled and I winked at them as they peeked at us over their shoulders. “Of course, it's become almost obligatory!” I teased, the girls flushing and huddling close, whisper-screaming in excitement.
Security was pretty quick, considering the fact that our packs were see-through. The huge, muscled men in tight-fitting black t-shirts labeled “Security” gave us a once over, our tickets branded in our shaky hands, and waved us through. Poor guys looked tense, not people you wanted to fuck with. We got our wristbands once our tickets were scanned and the little ring of paper and plastic made it feel a little more real.
Once we were through, the crowd dispersed and we bounced our way over to the map of the stadium. Completely clueless on where to go, we quickly figured out which entryway we needed and made our way through the collection of shrieking kids, laughing teens, and excited adults. One thing I adored about this fandom was the incredible range of ages. People of all shapes and sizes and colors fanned out and congregated and laughed at each other’s signs and crazy fashion choices. There was no hate, no tension, just the genuine acknowledgement of mutual adoration for our boys.
Our poor little minds screeched to a halt when we entered the arena. The ceiling towered above us, disappearing high up behind light fixtures and wires and tiny walkways. Four levels of balcony seats soared above our heads and I was numbly reminded of the Coliseum, if this was how the gladiators felt when they first entered.
The floor lights were switched on high, illuminating the place so people could make their way to their seats. The area was nearly full, the ocean of people making me almost dizzy with how it moved. Thousands, there had to be thousands here.
Smurf squeaked at my side and clutched my arm, pointing to the front seats down in the pit, dragging my ass down the steps to the low floor of the stadium. We passed by throngs of security setting up and going over plans, I imagined. They gave us a glance and nodded, smiling and telling us to enjoy the concert. We nodded and beamed back, unable to speak at the moment.
The stage was… odd. There was the main stage with an arm stretching out into the audience, another smaller stage resting there like an odd peninsula. Our seats rested on the left of the arm, tucked into the corner, in front of the main stage, pushed back from the edge by a thick barricade. We stared up at the massive digital screen behind the stage, currently displaying music videos, the immense speakers softly playing along. The band was setting up in an alcove underneath the screen, tuning their instruments and laughing.
Smurf and I grabbed each other by the hand. This was it.  This was when our lives would change, little did we know how much it would.

Relationships: BTS ensemble and Fem!Reader
Summary: Reader faces reality, and some serious self degradation, as she readies herself for the BTS concert. A lot of this stems from my own anxiety and struggles with self worth. Don't worry, though, her bestie helps her out in the end!
Warnings: anxiety, self-doubt, past sorrows

Part 1 Part 2
Dust motes floated by my eyes, my exhausted and spent brain focusing on the little bastards as they made their way down to my completely trashed bedroom floor.
Pan back. I sat in the middle of my floor, legs tucked under me, the entire contents of my closet exploded outwards like some type of claymore mine had gone off into the middle of my room. You know, those envelope-shaped bombs that Rambo used in like every film, explodes outwards and just dessimated any living thing in a 500 foot radius?
That was my room. That was how my best smurf found me the Wednesday before the Saturday night concert. My hair in complete disarray, sleep shirt sliding off one shoulder, eyes glazed over in the most defeated way.
She had burst through my front room door, declaring the number of days before our lives were going to totally change, and had stopped half way through before bursting into hysterics at the state of … well, everything.
My lower lip instantly started trembling, a pathetic little sniff escaping my now red nose, and my smurf instantly quieted.
“Aw, honey,” she murmured, dropping her purse and kneeling down in front of me. Wrapping her arms behind my neck, Smurf’s brows furrowed in concern. “You really went down the rabbit hole this time, didn’t you?”
She knew. She knew what happened in my brain when I was completely at a loss and felt like everything was out of my control. The insecurities, the self doubt, the cruel voices of lovers past started digging into my confidence and my mind started to spiral downwards. Causing me to whirl like a tornado through all my clothing choices, nothing right, everything wrong.
But, why?? I was about to experience something incredible. This was something to be happy about, no?? Why the hell was I panicking over a damned concert??
Because I was never enough. Never enough for the people who mattered most to me, for the people who shaped my life as I grew, as my mind was growing and learning behaviors and such. Never pretty enough, never talented enough, never anything enough…
What did that have to do with a concert? Nothing. And everything. Because these boys’ opinions mattered to me. Which made me even angrier because that didn’t make any sense. I would never see them again, and they most likely wouldn’t even remember my face in the sea of thousands of happy, singing ARMYs.
Which was fine! I’m not going there to get noticed! I’m going there to be entertained, to shower these boys with love and affection and show my support, along with everyone else.
But I wasn’t enough. My past told me, shaped me to believe that.
The past which all boiled down to create the current me: a big, loud, confident, goofy dumbass on the outside; a seriously self-doubting, depressed, anxious, small person on the inside. The duality was sometimes enough to make my head spin, let alone those who I let close enough to see both sides.
But my Smurf loved both sides equally. And that was enough for both big and small. She adored my goofy, confident, bitchy side, and comforted my small, lonely, needy side. Honestly, I don’t even know where I would be if it wasn’t for my smurfette. Meeting her in high school had been the best thing that could have happened. Period. Crazy stupid blue hair and all.
She even let me tattoo some of my best artwork onto her shoulder and down her back, some of the ink the special UV type that only shows up under a blacklight. The piece was one of my most famous ones, having gone viral over several social media sites.
“Babe,” she softly called, tucking a wisp of hair behind my ear.
I blinked and focused tired eyes on her green.
“You look gorgeous no matter what you put on.”
~~~~~~~
Smurf and I worked late into the evening decluttering my explosion of a room. Laughing and throwing shit at each other. Dancing to old rock music and absolutely butchering the lyrics. We managed to wrestle all the shirts and dresses back onto their hangers and settled down to fold and organize the rest.
I had lost it when I realized I could never look good enough for any of them. They were all so stupidly gorgeous, I felt like I could be nekkid and covered in diamonds and still be second rate when compared to the boys.
But Smurf had nipped that toxic thought process in the bud pretty quick when I explained, in her usually loving way.
“You’re an idiot,” she calmly declared, folding up my pants in a neat little stack on my king sized bed.
I snorted out a laugh and lobbed a pair of clean socks at her head, my tangled pile of bras ignored in my lap.
Ignoring the projectile as it bounced harmlessly off her long dark ponytail, she got rid of the blue after senior year but the nickname was here to stay, Smurf shook her head and grinned, focusing on her task.
“You hold them up to such impossible standards that you completely forget the most important thing.”
“... what?”
She turned her sharp eyes on me. “They are human too.”
I blinked as that comment sank in.
“You forget that they are human, with just as many flaws. You forget that they have been painted and airbrushed and stylized out the wazoo to make them look completely flawless. Which, there’s nothing wrong with that. But it's harmful to compare yourself to that kind of standard.”
She made absolute sense. Of course she did, she’s a fucking genius when it comes to wrangling my twisted self image and turning her words into something that clicked in my head.
“Jesus… I am an idiot.”
“Like I said,” she chirped, finishing the last pair of jeans with a flourish and hopped up to put them away in my closet.
The rest of the night was spent picking out the perfect outfit. Lord, it felt so shallow, I was waiting for teenage emo music to start pouring out of the speakers. But I needed it. I needed to find that outfit that gave me just the right amount of confidence without making me feel like I was putting myself up for sale.
For all my boring days of adulting, of copying, fetching coffee, paying bills, dealing with idiots, answering an endless fleet of calls… I deserved a moment of happiness, of being shallow. Of being self indulgent and wanting to make myself look and feel like the real me.
And it came in the form of my comfy black skinny jeans, an oversized soft pink sweater, and blue ballet flats.
In the end, it turned out the real me just needed a bit of comfort.
Part 1 Part 2
“Hey there, darlin,” came the sly laugh from behind me.
“Hey, Smurf,” I responded, sniggering down at the copy machine as I made the 50000th copy of the day.
My coworker and partner-in-crime, Sarah, or “Smurf” as I affectionately named her, leaned against the Beast of a machine to my right, crossing her arms and feigning a nonchalant sigh of boredom.
It had been a long day. A ghastly week. In some ways, it mirrored the movie “Office Space” with the same monotonous routine, over and over and over again. The same managers droning on and on about better customer care and faster call times and working as a team, blah blah blah. Us worker bees of course just side-eyed each other with subtle rolling of the eyes, knowing we had to devote time to each individual customer to fix the problems, which meant longer call times. Which, of course, upper management just didn’t seem to get and completely ignored.
All in all, it was just another week, stuffed into another month, dragged into another year in this slightly stifling office job in the middle of the midwest, surrounded by cornfields and cringey political signs. Honestly, my only saving grace was the few tattoo gigs that popped up every now and again. Usually the loyal clientele that needed a touch up or new artwork done. I was a favorite at the only tat shop in the little town and was allowed to pick my hours. Nice, right?
Smurf huffed out another sigh, this one edging on annoyed, and I huffed one back at her.
“Whatchu want, Smurfs? I’m trying to get His Majesty’s sheets done before closing time.” His Majesty was none other than the Big Boss’ son, slave driver and all around mysoginistic jackass. He really enjoyed giving out the lesser jobs to his more feminine employees. Seemed to get a kick out of lording his authority over them. I swear, he was born in the wrong decade.
“I knooooow,” Smurf grinned, studying her acrylic nails as she swayed her curvy hips in place.
Taking my eyes from the Beast and rolling them in my bestie’s direction, I copied her stance and leaned against the wall behind me. “Smurfs, it's Friday,” I whined. “We’re almost outta here. Why you buggin’ me?”
Smurf finally let her inner demon glee shift her mouth into a huge grin and looked up at me. “So,” she spoke in a bored voice, betraying the utter joy evident all over her face, “You know The Concert That Shall Not Be Named?”
I stiffened. Of course. She HAD to mention the damned concert. Of all the gigs in all the world she had to bring me down with this shit.
I was an ARMY, through and through. Lover of all things BTS, a solid fan, albeit for only half a year, I had been taken into the massive group of fans by a random tiktok that played a piece of their animated music video, “We Are Bulletproof: Eternal”. The vocals, the harmonies, the lyrics, the beautiful artistry, and their incredible dedication to their fans all smacked me right in the face. And I knew it. I was hooked.
Of course, living in the midwest meant I had to show my love from afar. I lived too far away from any concert venue and was way too poor to travel to any shows in the neighboring states. But it was ok, I didn’t allow that to dampen my adoration. The boys were hardworking, dedicated, talented people and I absolutely admired their commitment to their craft and their followers. Honestly, I had never witnessed such love for the fans in any other musicians, never seen the power the fans hold acknowledged in such a precious way. Their humble hearts and minds continued to surprise and endear me with every new song and episode of their shows discovered.
However, the Impossible had happened. On their newest world tour, the PR team announced several new locations to their travel venue. And my heart had nearly lept out of my chest when I realized the boys were coming to the Big City merely an hour away from my little town.
Smurf had called me, nearly in tears, wailing that the tickets were already sold out and the scalpers were selling the hacked tickets for 4 times the original price. It was a Dark Day for us midwestern poor ARMYs. There were many mourning candles lit.
Hah, not really. But Smurf and I were happy for those who could attend, and continued to live our humdrum lives, secretly vibrating in excitement to have the boys in close proximity to us in just a few months.
And now, my traitor of a best smurf, decided to remind me of this damned concert. Right as I was about to declare freedom and make a run for the exit. I already had my weekend planned. Bubble bath, pineapple rum, stuffed crust pizza, the new Dr. Strange movie….
I glared daggers at my friend-turned-traitor. “You dare to mention said concert? On this, the day of my cat’s quinceañera??”
Smurf burst out laughing at the mention of our favorite cat meme. After a moment, she quickly returned to her former stance and glared back at me.
“Be prepared for your life to change, bitch.”
“What the fuck are you on about?” I laughed, clueless to her ramblings.
“I. Got. Tickets.”
My heart stopped.
“I’m sorry, I just hallucinated. What?”
Smurf huffed and dropped her hands, gripping my shoulders. “I. Got. Tickets. To see the babies. Our boys. The fine ass brigade. The glorious hip thrusters, the—”
“SMURF, YOU WHAT??”
My slightly unprofessional shriek in the middle of the large room filled with small cubicles and people readying for the weekend caused a sudden silence.
Ducking low, avoiding eye contact with anyone in the vicinity, I grabbed Smurf by the elbow and dragged her into the nearest conference room.
Tossing her dumb ass at the massive table, I slammed the door shut and stood staring at her, chest heaving.
“You, what… how??” My brain refused to believe anything that was said in the last 5 minutes.
Smurf placed her hands together in prayer form and giggled maniacally. “I got tickets. To the BTS concert. The one close by,” she gasped out.
My brain reeled, trying to imagine how this dirt poor office worker could manage to afford thousands of dollars worth of scalped tickets.
“Smurf, did you take your meds today?” I asked cautiously and slowly.
“Oh pfft,” she replied, waving her hand in the air as if to shove that very important inquiry aside. “You remember back in the day when they would give away tickets on the radio?”
“Oh. Yeah, sure. But… how the hell would they manage the phone lines for a BTS concert?” I pondered, imagining millions of phone calls bombarding a poor haggard DJ.
“See, that’s the thing. My uncle has connections, right? And it was a private giveaway. Apparently for certain… members of his club.”
I… did not even want to delve into that information. The infamous uncle of a supposedly… shifty background was also something we never really discussed. Even with some of the seedier clients that passed through my tattoo shop, we really tried to avoid dipping our toes in that area of the underworld. It was just acknowledged and then put aside.
“So… you called in.”
“I called in.”
“And won tickets.”
“Won front row tickets.”
I blanked, jaw hitting the floor. Front row… the ones that cost tens of thousands….. Holy fuck.
After my brain came back online, cue the AOL start up noises, I blinked several times and closed my mouth.
“....How many tickets did you get?” I asked in a very tiny voice, my brain starting to vibrate with the smallest of hope.
“Bitch, I got 2. Two mothafuckin tickets to see mothafuckin BTS!!!”
We both screamed and batted our hands at each other like absolute twelve year olds, shrieking and jumping around and losing our ever loving minds.
Suddenly, reality came crashing down. In the form of His Majesty himself.
“Uh, girls?” he shouted, head peeking in through the open doorway.
We immediately froze and turned, smoothing down our skirts and hair (damn dress codes).
“I believe it's a bit early for a sexy pajama party,” he sneered, laughing at his joke like the arrogant ass he is.
Smurf and I laughed weakly and nodded, apologizing for making such a ruckus.
“Now, get your butts back to finishing up the week, we aren’t paying you overtime. I’ve got a table at Delgado’s with my name on it.” He winked disgustingly and slipped his oily self back out into the beehive/workroom.
Smurf grimaced and gagged. “Ugh, woe be the woman who got snagged into that date.”
“Mmhmm,” I mindlessly agreed, my hindbrain going over every single detail of every single thing that we need to do to get ready for this experience of a lifetime.
Huffing and shaking off that creepy encounter, Smurf wrapped her arm around my shoulders and dragged me back out into the work room, shoving me at the copy machine.
“Alright, babes, finish up, we got planning to do, this shit is going down next weekend!!”
My heart skipped a beat and I gripped the Beast in shock. One week. Holy hell, the concert is in one week. I need a drink. I need a Xanax. I need a fucking horse tranquilizer.
All silly fangirling aside, my soul shivered in happiness, goosebumps spreading all down my skin. I would have the chance to watch these boys perform right in front of me. I will have the chance to witness their talent and voices and silly goofing and see the adoration in their eyes as they serenade their beloved ARMY.
I will have the absolute honor of witnessing the most acclaimed group of musicians perform on stage.
And I was absolutely panicked.
