Setup and Payoff
Dear Rookie writers: <clenches fist, looks out longingly onto a field of continuity> Look. I get it. You had to execute the ship. You were moved to an earlier time slot, so less risqué content. You tonally shifted to a comedy. Covid fucked your timeline, etc etc etc. FINE. I give you all of that.
But for the love of all that is good and holy can you PLEASE WRITE NORMAL FUCKING STORYLINES THAT MAKE SENSE.
Screenwriting is simple. Setup. Payoff. Like, for example:
— setup: show actively sets up friend ribbing friend about a coworker crush/romance. The PAYOFF would be said friend loses their shit when the coworkers actually get together (examples: Boyle in B99, Jacob in Abbott Elementary, Michael Scott in the Office, Schmidt for Nick and Jess in New Girl).
Tumblr media
— setup: show actively sets up consequences to office / coworkers finding out about secret romance. PAYOFF: actual work consequences happen (ie, Ben and Lesley break up in parks and rec).
Tumblr media
— setup: characters CONFESS THEIR FEELINGS to OTHER CHARACTERS in an ensemble cast so that the audience knows there are actual emotional stakes. PAYOFF: we get emotional insights and CLEAR emotional STAKES. (Ie, B99, Parks & Rec, New Girl, The Mindy Project).
Tumblr media
— setup: you have two characters who want to be together but can’t due to [insert obstacles]. Unresolved tension continues to rise until characters can be together. (Ie, Castle, X Files, Alias, ER, Buffy, Once Upon a Time).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Every single move the Rookie has made this year has deflated each setup like a fucking pin in a balloon. — Lopez ribs Bradford about Lucy and in the end neither supposed bff brings up the romance again, save Lopez over some dumb radio message? (And we never get some confessional from Lucy to Nyla or anyone about how she pined for Tim in UC school, and all we get is some throwaway “*That* Bradford” one-liner?)
— Season One of Talia warning Lucy re: Nolan so they break up, to Seasons 2-4 of Lucy being a subordinate to Tim so nothing can happen, to Grey warning them about office romances, and in the end, we get ZERO reactions from any characters that they’re together and ZERO consequences to the relationship other than some mild Post-It wrangling?
— The unresolved tension that starts off with a bang in S1, ratchets up in S2 and complicates itself S3 and S4, never ACTUALLY gets addressed by Tim or Lucy confessing their actual feelings to each other? Just suddenly “if we do this” to “our kids will be xyz” in a few episodes?
I JUST DONT GET IT. I DONT UNDERSTAND setting up a storyline that could be SO FULL of juicy confessions, angst, longing, pining and just maybe ONE LITTLE SEXY SCENE FFS only to turn it into the MOST bland and milquetoast ship. I KNOW these characters can do hot and sassy and argumentative because we’ve seen it. They can definitely to angsty. But this whole we’re-going-to-dial -down-every-emotional-payoff-to-a-mild-5….like….to what end, writers? TO WHAT END?

Intimacy Gaps
ok so I know I usually rant about the lack of connective tissue in S5 in bringing chenford together. I recently realized it’s because this season’s leapfrog approach to Chenford deprives us of an emotional intimacy that is the bedrock of a solid otp and the reason I started watching the rookie to begin with.
like — domestic chenford, transferring, talk of babies, ADORBS.
HOWEVER.
Building intimacy in a partnership requires vulnerability. For some reason, the show has chosen to strip out those small moments in favor of hitting the larger relationship beats, which has managed to flatten chenford for me.
For example — take the Isabel arc. We see Tim struggle with the angst of an addicted wife, we see Lucy confront him about it, yell at him about it. We see their mutual concern for one another; see him end things with his wife, partly due to Lucy’s influence. <chef’s kiss> in building emotional depth and angst.
Compare that to the Ashley/Chris storylines. We get a few snarky quips from both Tim and Lucy about dating other people. We never have a confessional scene where Lucy admits her jealousy or hurt. We don’t have Angela ribbing Tim over Chris, especially after that disastrous double date. We don’t have either of them end their relationships because their feelings for each other get the better of them; rather, they continue to be dragged along until outside circumstances force a change. Ashley dumps Tim for some batshit reason the writers pulled out of a hat, robbing him of agency or decision, and then Tim essentially robs Lucy of agency or decision by telling Lucy to break up with Chris. The result is a relationship that’s sort of developed by proxy rather than internal decisions driven by the characters, which is literally How Not to Write Characters 101.
On top of that, we never get insights from other characters the way we used to from Jackson (ie, Angela telling Lucy that Ashley’s a safe choice for example), and because of that, SO MUCH emotional intimacy is left on the table.
I guess my larger point is that we’re going through the motions of establishing an OTP on screen without earning it through the actual moments the show would have once upon a time written, and that just bums me out.
The physical intimacy is great and I’m glad we’re progressing. Just wish it was punctuated by that emotional depth that drew me into the rookie those first few seasons.

Why no tEnSioN
Listen I love where this is going but <clenches fist> where is the ANGST and TENSION of S1/S2? Like, I get we’re in full broad comedy era with the Rookie and it’s never going to be as tonally serious as it was the first few seasons.
But FFS Tim pulled Lucy out of a barrel. She saved his life when he got shot. And now we’re at “naked time” jokes? Like where are the stakes? The gravitas? If I’d just started watching the show I would NEVER have guessed they have such a deep history between them. Also — and this is my last gripe — Lucy “you won’t see me naked for a while” Chen was ALSO “do you want to come in?” thirsty ass Sava 10 episodes ago LIKEEEEEEE for the love of god PLEASE give me continuity?? I’m begging u Rookie writers 😭😭😭

Ok a golden fucking angst opportunity MISSED yet again — where is the confrontation scene between Ashley / Tim over Lucy? Writing Ashley as clueless to the dynamic and not addressing it at all makes for such WEAK writing and character. We needed a drug-induced “Chen, is that you?” from Tim post surgery and for Ashley to explode, break down, and walk away. Like if my bf made heart eyes to his co-worker, especially after the double date from last season, I’d be like ?? Bitch??? Are you in love with Lucy?? We can all see it, including me, the blonde??? Give Ashley rage. Let Tim stew in it. Then let that be the lingering thing when Lucy comes to visit him so that he’s hurting and maybe a little bit shut down, which makes Lucy fuss over him all the more, and generates even more angst, I MEAN FFS, let them be real people like in S1/S2, not these milquetoast soap characters. I just —

Rookie writers WHY. You want stakes? Put Nolan in the tank, have Lucy be the one Rosalind calls to get him out, have Tim going apeshit when she disappears, and Bailey maybe gets one scene of tension when she’s trying to pry open the cage.
Every pairing generates tension AND we have the possibility of Lucy / Nolan past relationship shit coming up, with Tim angst thrown in. juicy, JUICY stakes.
like can you imagine Lucy sitting across from the woman who put her in a barrel? And Tim showing up but being forced to watch Lucy decide between Nolan or absolution from her trauma? or even better, he gets shot in the process of trying to intervene?? like????
Instead we waste the death of the show’s BEST villain on…a lacklustre character nobody really gives a shit about while Nolan makes Boy Scout choices over dinner? I mean for fuck’s sake, at least if he shot Rosalind there’d be Character Growth and A Choice That Haunts Him All Season. As is, we get zero growth, zero complexity. Like GUYS, guys whatre you doinggggg.
Also we needed ONE “you OK?” from Tim to Lucy, and her dismissing his concern to build Even More Tenshun. LIKE…GUYS??? You’re writers…right?? 😭😭😭😭

Yes to ALL of this @my-shields-are-down. I get why Chris talks to Wes — more screen time for Shawn which is always great — but logically, all this shit would trigger Lucy as the primary interlocutor, and she’s due for a meltdown / confessional to SOMEONE, JFC. Like if it’s all deliberate and building up to something, great. But the writing doesn’t carry that through right now. Don’t get me started on Tim not knowing Chris whistled The Song last season. so much juicy untapped drama. Like if that were brought up now?? He’s go feral. Smdh.
Why the weird gaps re: Lucy's trauma?
So here's a weird choice I keep bumping against: we've had 2 episodes now where Lucy is taking care of Chris as he comes to terms with Rosalind. Why aren't we focused on how Rosalind is affecting Lucy? Throughout the message board scenes / FBI scenes, Lucy never once says "Hey, I was there, too", or "I went through this, she put me in a barrel" or something that expresses her level of emotion around what's happening.
We're left to infer that maybe she's deliberately detaching, or that she's moved on and healed, but we don't ever get any real insight around it. It's a strange choice, given how much the Rosalind dynamics are shaping the season so far.
If Lucy's shoving it all down, we still need to see that -- either through a confession to herself, or to a smiley face, or to Tim as she's drunkenly confessing her feelings to him on a 2AM whispered call in the bathroom after she dreams about them while Chris is in bed next to her I MEAN NEVERMIND IM FINE
