VIXX: Why So Catchy?
VIXX is one of many (many, many, so many) male rookie groups to debut in 2012 into the Kpop universe. VIXX is made up of 6 members all who were chosen through the tv show Myidol. The members are N, Leo, Ken, Ravi, Hong Bin, and Hyuk. They currently reside under the label Jellyfish (Brian Joo, Seo In-Guk).
VIXX or should I say their company has taken up a very interesting and in your face marketing style. The boys recently released their third single since their debut in May. Each of VIXX's music videos have three things in common: catchy chorus, signature dance moves, and the VIXX logo being everywhere.
In a quickly becoming over-saturated Kpop market every rookie group is fighting to stand out. I have followed VIXX since their debut. At first I couldn't understand why I liked their music. "Super Hero" was a generic pop song, and yet I found my self constantly wanting to listen to it. Then it clicked it is CATCHY. Extremely catchy.
After seeing the title I was expecting "super hero" to be in the lyrics but instead VIXX is swing back and forth singing "fantastic". I put this song on one of my monthly car playlists and every time it came on I would find my self swinging back and forth singing "agi, agi, fantastic!" Therefore this song became memorable even though in reality if you were to really break it down it seems like your typical Kpop song. Also their logo is everywhere (even as a backdrop) in this music video so that actually sticks out as well.
VIXX is also able to pull off masculine cuteness. It doesn't seem possible but they do it. They have these music videos that are full of bright colors (pink) yet they have this masculine look to them.
Did I mention they can all sing? Well the rapper raps but that's his job.
Moving on...
Next they came out with "Rock Ur Body". I love this music video purely because I'm nerdy and I like video games.
This song truly made me a fan of VIXX. Now while VIXX uses autotune they use it right. It works with their voices where it doesn't distort them. Watching them perform this live was always enjoyable because they look like they're having fun. And this is a fun song so why not have a good time singing it? I know I did in my car.
Yes, this song was on one of my monthly car playlist as well. It's just so damn catchy!!! Even their Engrish is catchy. "Dance to the reft, to the right!" It's so ridiculous because they say reft instead of left, but it kind of makes me love it more. Then you also have "You make me feel alive, -live, wonderful tonight, night" and "Rock your body, body, rock your body, body". These lines are also very catchy and they add in fun, simple (easily learnable) dance moves which just make jamming out to this song so much better.
Again the VIXX logo is incorporated into the music video. These guys need to make their own design label. Between the VIXX clothing (Super Hero) and the VIXX arcade theme I'd buy it (maybe...). But I compliment Jellyfish because their marketing style is working. Catchy, fun dances, and the VIXX logo everywhere. It's makes them memorable even though their songs to a critic's eyes are generic. (And again bright colors (pink) and some manly men = masculine cuteness).
This strategy carried over to their newest song, which let's take a step back for a second. I loved "Rock Ur Body". Therefore I was expecting a lot for VIXX's comeback. And... they didn't disappoint.
When I watched the first teaser for "On and On" I was like "Did I just hear Phantom of the Opera?" Yes, yes I did. And VIXX incorporates it perfectly.
I love this song.
-although this time VIXX became masculine zombie beast men- Despite leaving their cuteness behind they still kept the catchiness. Even though the chorus is in Korean and I will not attempt to write a romanized version here I still sing it. However, nothing beats what I feel is the best part of the song. I think you know what I'm talking about.
"I NEED THERAPY! LALALALA THERAPY!"
The way Kpop uses English always amazes me. (VIXX actually always uses it grammatically correct so points for them), but English in Kpop songs makes them memorable on a global scale. I played this song for one of my friends and the lines she remembers are "I need therapy". Combine that with the sexy, hip thrusting zombie move and I'm hooked.
The concept for this music video is also very interesting. Points for using an old fashioned sci-fi looking set for when they are on the moon. (I'm assuming they are on the moon). And I think VIXX music videos have become a game of how many times can you spot the logo. (*cough* five seconds in). It took a couple playthroughs before I realized that there is a giant VIXX logo statue half buried in the background. (I know you just went back and watched it to see that).
I also really enjoyed the live performances of this song. All the members wear the beast eye contacts that they wear in the music video and these boys can sing (and get really into all their performances) so there is no way for it not to be enjoyable. Oh, and the hip thrusting. I like that too. *wink *wink.
Tumblr media
In Conclusion:
VIXX is a stand out among rookies. They stick to a solid marketing scheme which is actually different then some other rookie groups like B.A.P. and EXO. Then again Jellyfish is a very small label and VIXX is their only idol group so they need VIXX to succeed. And I think they are well on their way. People still label their songs as generic pop, but to be honest they pull it off so well and make it their own that I don't mind if it is generic pop. It's appealing to the ears and all their songs are catchy. "Catchy" is the golden word when describing VIXX.
So... you should listen to them and I can't wait until their next single. Although I still find much enjoyment from listening to "On and On" so I don't mind the wait.
Sidenote: They're adorkable. (adorable + dorky)

Kpop+ August Playlist
I'm back again with another playlist for the month of August. It's about halfway through the month and about time for a new CD in my car, so without further ado here we go!
(Playlist given in video form):
Youtube Playlist:
Wait! Quick refresh of the rules:
1) 20-22 Songs
2) 1 U-Kiss Song
3) Non-Korean songs are allowed. (Hence Kpop+)
4) Song age does not matter.
Okay now we're good!
1: EXID "I Feel Good"
This song is a great way to start off a playlist. It gets you pumped!
2: BEAST/B2ST "Beautiful Night"
It was unfortunate that this song came out right after I made my last playlist, but it's here for August so I can't complain. This song... it's Batoost- you can't go wrong.
3: VIXX "Rock Ur Body"
VIXX stepped into the video game realm and came out on top. I was afraid at first that this song would sound similar to U-Kiss's 'Rock Your Body' from their "Shut Up" EP, but VIXX didn't disappoint.
4: AOA "Elvis"
I love F.T. Island and C.N.Blue so therefore I should like AOA, right? Correct. I'm not to into the Elvis concept but the song is catchy and I like the idea of a band and a dance group. (See previous posts about LEDApple). I actually like the drummer despite her not having any lines. I also like the rapper with purple-ish tips. Good start for a rookie group and now I get the 7+1 format, haha.
5: D-Unit "I'm Missing U"
The 2NE1 copycats as many have dubbed them. Well, I like them so get over it. The song starts a bit abruptly and ends a little flat but I still found myself singing it. So here it is in the fifth slot of the playlist.
6: Supernova "She's Gone"
Supernova is that group that's been around forever but hardly anyone knows because they promote mainly in Japan. I like this song. It's not something that's going to make them insanely popular over night but it's good and catchy. (That's good enough for me!)
7: NU'EST "Not Over You"
I am really starting to get into Nu'est. I mean I was into them when they first debuted and I admired their real life song concepts. This is their first song crossing over into the love song genre that they have performed live. And I have to say it's pretty good and fun to listen to.
8: Mario "MAYDAY"
Hey summer isn't over so why not throw summer songs in the mix. Last month it was "Summer Party" by MYNAME and this month it's Mario's "MAYDAY". I like using this playlist as an opportunity to share some artists people might not know about. I didn't know this guy until I saw him on 24-7Kpop's website.
9: Aziatix "Ready, Set, Go"
Oh, Aziatix. Last month they were featured in the song #Peepshow. This month however I'd like to share one of their newest songs "Ready, Set, Go". The music video is pretty awesome as well.
10: Nia "Summer Wink"
Nia is another artist I discovered through 24-7Kpop. As far as my taste in American music goes I like Alternative/Rock. Nia fits into this category and I got really into this song.
11: KAT-TUN "To The Limit"
Here comes the first non-Korean song for this month. KAT-TUN is a big group under Johnny Entertainment in Japan. This song was actually hard to track down. And I could only find a live performance not a music video. Still good either way.
12: C-Clown "SOLO"
I almost forgot about these guys when I was making the playlist. C-Clown (stands for Crown Clown) grew on me after watching a few of their live performances. I'm not really into their name but the music is what's important.
13: Phantom "Burning"
Phantom is a new group to me, but apparently they are fairly well know for performances they've done before their official debut. Well, "Burning" is their actual debut and it has an American R&B/Pop feel to it. It's catchy to.
14: E7 "U"
This song I was a little back and forth with putting it on the playlist. E7 literally just came out. (With two songs may I add). I felt however for this spot in the playlist "U" fit better than their other song. It is also very catchy. "UUUUUUUUU!" Haha.
15: U-Kiss "Te Amo"
Rule #2: One U-Kiss song. I wanted to put "One of You" but I think that will have to wait until September. I wished they had performed this song live and I love the Korean/Spanish/English blend. They pulled it off very well.
Alternate: Glam "Party XXO"
16: Phantom "ICE"
Another Phantom song, what? They're rookies? Yes this is another Phantom song but I guarantee you'll recognize it as a remake of another very popular English song. I'll give you a hint: Barbra
17: Tasty "You Know Me"
Tasty is a cool duo in my opinion and I was about to put their song "SOLO" on here instead of "You Know Me", but I was like no "You Know Me" is what I've got in my head that is what should be on the playlist.
18: Teen Top "Be Ma Girl"
The concept of this song is a complete turn around from "No More Perfume on You". Overall it's a generic Teen Top song, but It's still good. Does anyone else still consider Teen Top rookies? I feel like they are but in reality they've been around almost or over two years I think.
19: Two X "Double Up"
Another iffy song since it just came out, but I caught myself shamelessly singing it. So here it is MBLAQ's sister group: Two X.
20: B1A4 "Hey Girl"
Literally stumbled on this song by accident. This isn't even an official release for B1A4, it's an OST. It's so well done though that I put it on the playlist.
21: J-Min "Stand Up"
Another OST and I bet you know where from too. (SM's remake of Hana Kimi "To the Beautiful You".
22: Arashi "Face Down"
Ending on a strong note with the second Japanese song of the playlist. Arashi is one of the biggest groups in Japan and are the senior group to KAT-TUN under Johnny Entertainment. This song was equally hard to track down but it's Arashi so it's worth it.
______
Well that's the playlist for August. And don't murder me because there was no Super Junior. To be honest I can't get into "SPY". I like it and then the line "Kick it in the butt" comes up and I immediately stop listening to it. Sorry SuJu fans.
Comeback next month for another Kpop+ Playlist!

July Kpop+ Playlist
Every month I create a new CD playlist for my car. I try to pick songs that I won't get tired of for a month and that I can embarrassingly sing along to in my car. I've been doing this for three months now and I figured "why not share it."
Here are my requirements:
1) Max out at 20-22 songs
2) Must include one U-Kiss song
3) 1 or 2 Japanese/English songs are permitted
4) Age of song does not matter
5) If songs come out after I create my playlist for one month they will probably be on the following month's. For example: Beast's new song
(Note: I'm a U-Kiss fan hence #2)
So without further ado I present you my Kpop+ Playlist:
#1: MYNAME "Summer Party"
I've always been a fan of MYNAME for the most part. "Message" was kind of corny but it was catchy nonetheless. I was into "Hello & Goodbye" when it first came out too. "Summer Party" is one of their original Japanese songs that is not a remake of a Korean song. I like it because it's a summer song and it gets you in the mood to well enjoy summer. It's a great way to start out a playlist because it gets you hyped up.
#2: 2NE1 "I Love You"
I'm not going to lie I was not that into this song when it first came out, especially after songs like "I Am the Best" and "Ugly". I thought this song didn't live up to the greatness of their previous tracks. However, after a few listens it got stuck in my head and now I enjoy belting "I LOVE YOU!!!!" at the top of my lungs in my car. 2NE1 is awesome and if they've got a new song it's got to go on my playlist.
#3: Super Junior "Sexy, Free & Single"
Again this is another song that I was not into at first. I mean I know everyone's in love with Super Junior and all but at first listen I thought this song was like a Mr. Simple 2.0. And of course it's catchy and it invaded my brain! So here it is, my second big name group right after the first in this playlist.
#4: ZE:A "Aftermath"
ZE:A's always been a mystery to me. I mean I like their songs but I could never figure out where they ranked among K-pop groups. Are they really popular? Are they low on the totem poll? Or are they somewhere in between? Either way I will always see them as 9 guys in animal costumes dancing around to "Watch Out" which is why I like them, haha. Anyway "Aftermath" has a fun chorus to attempt to sing to. I say attempt because let's be honest I can't sing. ;)
#5: LEDApple "Run to You"
Sometimes I feel like I'm alone in my LEDApple fandom. I liked their techno-ish, i-Pad guitar, and random DJ style. Of course now the DJ is gone so he can pursue other music related things, but whatever. "Run to You" reminds me of CNBlue's style of music and maybe that is why I like it even more.
#6: B.A.P. "No Mercy"
B.A.P. Oh B.A.P. I actually held off burning my CD until this song came out. I was originally waiting for AA to comeback but they had no specific date so I decided to wait for B.A.P. instead. This song is my JAM! I love B.A.P. because they aren't your typical K-pop group. They're different and that's good. I still can't get over how young and how tall Zelo is, but that's for another time. I think all my playlists so far have included a B.A.P. song but that could also be because they've had two comebacks already and they only debuted like six months ago. Anyway previously Blonde Asian People are the Best, Absolute, Perfect (and puffy bunnies- EatYourKimchi Style!).
#7: Ulala Session "Beautiful Night"
I actually forgot to put this song on my previous playlist so it got held off until this playlist. I'm kind of glad I did because even though it's been out for I think like two months now I still can rock out to it, haha. This song is like the Korean version of footloose. I love Ulala Session and I love their live performance. Ulala Session is another group out their that is not part of the norm. They hail from SuperstarK, and they know how to bring the house down. Therefore this song is a playlist necessity.
#8: IM5 "Everything About U"
IM5? Who's that? Whaaa? IM5 is an American Boy Band. Yes, I said American. They are actually pretty unknown which isn't much of a shocker. They are the current and closest thing that is American made that resembles a k-pop group. They have their diverse group- a little bit for everyone- they dance and they are all very young just like k-pop rookies nowadays. These boys are giant goofballs if you've ever watched their channel and I happened to stumble upon them one day. "Everything About U" is a free song that is catchy and that's why it's on here.
#9: Wonder Girls "Like Money"
I'm keeping the English going with Wonder Girls "Like Money". Wonder Girls are usually a hit or a miss with me. I'm not a "Nobody" fan but I didn't mind "Be My Baby". I guess it just depends. I do feel that when they originally toured with the JoBros they should've had this song. This song definitely has that American vibe to it. The concept is a little conceited if you ask me because this world is full of materialistic people already no need to add fuel to the fire. Props on the collab with Akon by the way.
#10: U-Kiss "4U"
Here comes that U-Kiss song I promised. What can I say I'm a Kiss Me. I chose this song though since their most recent material is a Japanese ballad. I mean I like "Dear My Friend" but I was looking for something more upbeat to go along with this playlist. "4U" fell into that category plus it was a song of theirs I hadn't listened to as much as "Believe" or "DoraDora" (which were also on previous playlists). And Jay Park wrote it so hey why not.
#11: A-Jax "Hot Game"
A rookie group? But their are so many other songs out there! Yes, A-Jax is a rookie group and you'll find that I tend to have a lot of rookies on my playlist because that is what most of the new material is right now. A-Jax is an interesting rookie group to me. I like that they incorporate a lot of English into their songs and most of it is grammatically correct. Props for them. I guess this song is just catchy. I almost put Big Star's "Hot Boy" but it reminded me too much of TAKEN's "Young Boy". Therefore I settled for "Hot Game".
#12: Jang Woo Young "Sexy Lady"
This guy is hot. End of story. Haha, yes and no. He was my favorite character in the first season of Dream High and he is pretty sexy ;) but that's not why I like the song. It's got a very unique instrumental and is usually how I identify the song.
#13: Mighty Mouth "Bad Boy"
Mighty Mouth is like a classic. How can you not put them on a playlist? This song is from May and I still love listening to it. It's fun and I don't even mind the female singer since she fits well with the song. If you haven't noticed my playlist is very male dominated. But anyway Mighty Mouth = awesome.
#14: T-Ara "Day by Day"
I feel like T-Ara has been switching up their musical style with every new song. This is the first time though I've actually watched one of their long ass music videos. I did like it though. It took me like five minutes to realize the girl was blind but this video was epic. Although I heard the lyrics don't really match the video the sound of the song does. It's a great way to slow down my playlist but still keep that catchy song theme going.
#15: Beast "Midnight"
This song came out right before I burned my CD so it was a last minute addition. It again follows that slower vibe coming off of T-Ara but still had that upbeat-ness to it as well. It's a good song to listen to when your driving home at night.
#16: Nu'est "Action"
This is one song I wish I had paid more attention to where I put it in the playlist. I think I moved one or two songs around last minute and didn't realize that "Action" came right after a slower song. Therefore if you use this order I would recommend putting this song 17th instead of 16th. Now that that's cleared up. I really like Nu'est. Again they are a rookie group that is doing something different. Their songs aren't about love they are about real issues. Also I know Aron's English rap by heart.
#17: BOB4 "Mystery Girl"
This is another group I feel like a lot of people probably don't know who they are. Their name is kind of dumb "Band of Boys 4" but that's beside the point. They make their own music and they're adorable. I'm always looking for more bands and not just boy bands in K-pop so I was happy to see these guys debut. I'm really into F.T. Island, TRAX, and CNBlue and now I can add these guys to the list. They've also covered SNSD's "Twinkle Twinkle" which I would recommend checking out.
#18: Jo Kwon "I'm Da One"
I hated this song; like I legitimately hated it. I thought it was sloppy, the music video was weird, I felt like the song just didn't flow from one verse to the next very well. And now... I like it. I whistle this song every where I go, which is fun when you are a good whistler and I am, haha. Jo Kwon you have won me over, I admit defeat.
#19: (Optional) "Getting Over You" LMFAO... other artists
The song is old but I wanted one more English party song so I through this one in there.
#20:  Jaurim, Aziatrix, Idiotape "#Peepshow"
The last two songs on my playlist are ones I really look forward to listening to. #Peepshow opens with a strong rap (in English) that makes me open my windows and blast my speakers. Thank you Converse for making this glorious collaboration and a pretty epic music video to go with it. Also this song is free.
#21: PSY "Gangnam Style"
What better way to end a playlist than with PSY? This dude is hilarious. I love all his stuff and I love watching him live. He fits into that out of the box category of k-pop people. PSY's stuff is always something you can jam to. I had "Right Now" as my ringtone for almost a year after it came out. This dude is awesome and I gladly put him on my playlist, even if it was last minute.
________
Okay well that's my playlist for July. I'll make another post next month for August. ChAOS just came out with "Racer", Beast's title track for Midnight Sun is now out, AA is suppose to have a comeback, and I believe a couple others shall be back as well. Oh, and I plan to have more girl groups next month. I've been getting into Glam's debut song recently. Anyway in a month I shall be back, enjoy this playlist for now!

Has history been an influence when you wrote Korra? We were discussing communism and McCarthyism in school and I feel like I see similar occurrences from that time period in Korra.

Music Bank: Lives to Die For
This week's Music Bank (6-1-12) featured a mix of great live performances. I found myself watching groups I normally just skip over. The quality of the performances this week truly blew my mind (even without SuJu's help). Let's take a look shall we.
Infinite "Chaser" (Winner)
This is my favorite live performance of Infinite's "Chaser" so far and not just because L isn't wearing that weird frilly skirt thing. I loved the outfits, the vocals, and the raps. Even the crowd seemed to agree. This truly was a well deserved win for these boys. I'd say SHINee should begin to get worried because these boys have the moves and the voices.
Teen Top "To You" (Comeback)
Teen Top made their comeback on Music Bank this week. I'm not the biggest fan of Teen Top. I can't get past Neil's giant lips (sorry that is mean) and Chunji has creeped me out ever since "No More Perfume on You". With that said... I like this song. It's good and catchy. The lyrics are divided a bit more evenly, however the rap is almost non-existant. Cap says one line... okay. The dance was creative and overall the live performance was well done. Also I like the hairstyles (Neil's is still growing on me), but I have to say good job Teen Top.
JJ Project "Bounce"
I had myself convinced that I would never get into JJ Project (at what point will they drop project from their name or is that staying?) because of my first encounter with them on Dream High 2. I was not a fan of Dream High 2 and I couldn't even finish it (I tried people, I honestly tried). My sister posted their MV on my wall and after a few live performances these boys have grown on me. I like their enthusiasm and they clearly are having a fun time whenever they perform so props for them. The song is fun and catchy and you can't help but find yourself singing "Bounce" at random moments during the day. Their lives are consistently great as well.
B.A.P. "Power"
B.A.P. is still promoting "Power". It seems like they've been performing this for a while now. Their lives are always strong although in this performance I've noticed that there are more background vocals. It doesn't bother me since I know these boys are perfectly capable of singing the whole song if they need to. As always a solid performance from B.A.P.
A-Pink "Hush"
Not my favorite A-Pink song, but you can't deny these girls have some great vocals. I just wish they got better material. I am also jealous of their ability to perform in those heals. (So high :o ).
 Dalmatian "E.R"
Dalmatian has always been a secret favorite of mine. They are back after a long hiatus with a new member, one member in the military, and one member having left. Overall though I love the song, performance, vocals, dance... all of it. Still waiting for their shirtless performance.  I like how they cut the guy with long hair's hair. I like it better this way because my non-kpop friends don't confuse him for a girl. Anyway, love Dalmatian.
B1A4 "Baby Goodnight"
Oh, B1A4 you tricked every foreigner with your cute music video, but upon further research each international fan discovers this song is about cheating. Still, Teen Top said that cheating was okay and B1A4 manages to pull it off in a cute way. Their live performances are always entertaining they don't even need to be the best dancers in the world either. Love the outfits.
MYNAME "Hello & Goodbye" (Comeback)
I cannot express how much I love this song! These boys were entertaining when they debuted with "Message" back who knows when 2011, but I couldn't help but feel they were influenced by "Facebook Official" which was the American boy band song influenced by kpop. Kpop influenced by Am. Pop influenced by Kpop (originally influenced by Am. Pop). Now that's confusing. I can't tell you who is who but I can say I love everything about this promotion cycle for MYNAME. Their music video had a captivating story, the song is awesome (especially since I was expecting a ballad), their vocals are awesome, the dance- did you see that in sync handstand/headstand whatever it was?- all of it was awesome. In other words you MUST WATCH THIS!
Hello Venus "Venus"
Hello Venus is from the same company that created NU'EST. This group wasn't what I had originally expected but as far as girl groups go I like them. I like how the rapper is also a power vocal. The song is catchy and their live is pretty impressive. They need to- how do I say this nicely- ditch the outfits. Mainly the girl with the top that is flowy and puffy and looks like it should be an oversized dress for a 1-year-old. Other than that I like Hello Venus and "Venus".
TOUCH "Let's Walk Together"
If Hello Venus had a twin group it would be TOUCH except they're guys. Maybe it's the blue/greyish haired members but either way they have that cute concept going for both groups. TOUCH apparently was originally seven members way back in 2010 than they lost four of their members and gained two new ones. Either way I like this song. The chorus is so catchy. Also I'm half-convinced the guy with brown curly hair is the long lost twin of Kim Si Hoo from Love Rain. Voice, looks, and all. Overall: me like TOUCH. That sounds weird...haha.
M.I.B. "Only Hard for Me" (Comeback)
M.I.B. always seems to be a hit or miss for me with their songs. I wasn't impressed by GDM or Celebrate. I do like their solo songs and this song has grown on me a bit. There is no doubt that they can perform live. Their vocalist will forever have a Japanese accent (since he's from Japan), but leave it to Jungle Entertainment to find an awesome group of rappers that compliment each other.
Wrap Up:
I left out a few groups (TTS, G.NA., GangKidz, ...etc), but don't be discouraged. It doesn't mean they don't have good live performances as well I just wanted to point out a few that most would skip over as well as mention some awesome live performances by rookie groups. Overall Music Bank had an awesome night and I look forward to Music Core tomorrow.
