it takes a long time for Law to consider you as his best friend
opening up to others is hard
and trusting them is even harder
but he makes the effort once he realizes that he likes having you around
as his best friend
you take it upon yourself to keep a closer eye on him
he gets grumpy when you remind him to sleep or eat
but he doesn't have a good argument to not take a break
he makes sure you take care of yourself
and gets mildly annoyed when you get yourself injured because you just jump into every altercation without a second thought
(he's only upset because he's worried)
in fights, he will do his best to keep an eye out for you
if you're in trouble, he'll help
and then make a sarcastic remark about the fact you almost got hit
(he looks out for his whole crew, but you also need to be able to protect yourself)
if you notice an enemy sneaking up on Law
despite knowing he could easily deal with it himself
you'll take them out before they even get the chance to try and hurt him
he'll probably make some comment about you looking out for yourself over watching him in battle

which has one of two results
your project is now ruined
or it's going to take you hours to fix it

you throw the captain out of your room
or off the ship depending on the circumstances
but he thinks it was worth it to see your face
will be so excited if you ask to draw him
make sure you get his good side
and make him look like a badass
another one of the worst people to have pose for you
he just can't keep a straight face
he watches how serious you look
and the way you're staring at him

you'll see him break bit by bit
first, he'll adjust his shoulders
then he let out a cough
the corners of his lip will tug upwards

they just let out an exasperated sigh
he just won't stop sending them
maybe some strings get pulled and for a week Shanks's wanted poster has one of your drawings

he would never tell you how they got ahold of your art

he's a man who can appreciate the finer things in life

it's not like anyone would really stand a chance to take it from him

sketchbook in hand

once he's done talking

which leads to more extravagant projects
ones that take months of work to even get close to finishing
but it's all worth it
and Franky will support you the whole time

You lived on a very small island. This island was special for two reasons: 1, it was eternally summer, and 2, it was one of many islands under Whitebeard's protection. Which meant you lived in paradise. Or at least something very close. The other perk of living on the summer island was that it was easier to handle being separated from your soulmate. Your soulmate had to be quite a distance away because you always had this dull coldness inside. But standing in the sun, soaking in its warmth, made it bearable.
You didn't like the idea of being cold. You didn't like being cold at all. So you imagined that your soulmate hated it too. You figured that one day, the two of you would search for each other. Maybe they would find you and you could finally be warm inside. You longed for the day that the emptiness you felt disappeared. It's not that you weren't happy with your life, but you wanted something else. Something more. Life on the island was great, but what would life be like somewhere else? Your heart desired some form of adventure before you died. It didn't have to be extravagant or life-changing. It just needed to be different from what you knew.
Growing up, Ace was always cold. He had enough problems though, so he just ignored it. Why waste his time worrying about someone he had never met when he had his family right there in front of him? He found that on the days he lost himself in thought about his heritage, he felt that coldness. It was sharp and neverending. He felt cold and empty. So, when he ate the Mera Mera no Mi, he was happy. He wasn't cold anymore, or maybe he just couldn't feel it like before. He wanted his soulmate to be happy, to live a long fulfilling life, and he wasn't the man to give them that. He didn't deserve to have such tender love in his life. It was a constant struggle for him to even accept that his friends would be there for him, much less the idea that someone out there would love him for him.
After a while, the idea of having a soulmate had slipped his mind. Anytime he felt cold, it was because he was stuck in his own head. Not because he was far away from the person he was destined to be with. He didn't think about someone he had never met. He was focused on the new family that he had joined. The life he was building in Whitebeard's crew.
There were some yearly maintenance items that the crew needed to take care of. They always tried to go to the islands under their protection so that they could check-in and make sure everything was running smoothly. Plus it was a good time to get some rest from their busy day-to-day lives. So, a small group of pirates set sail to the summer island. Marco, Ace, and a few of their underlings parted ways with the Moby Dick. The check-up was only scheduled to last a week. During that time, Marco would check the health of all of the villagers and Ace would not eat all of their food.
The closer they got to the island, the worse Ace felt. He was used to the heat. He had been on summer islands before and was completely fine. He was made of fire, so it was hard to burn him. But he was covered in sweat, barely able to move because of how sluggish he had become. Since when did he become susceptible to the sun's rays?
Marco had a sneaking suspicion of what was happening. He had seen similar situations before. He himself had felt the difference in temperature as he traveled. But because of his powers, he didn't get as cold. It was a safe assumption that Ace was getting close to his soulmate, and his devil fruit powers were making the heat worse. He just hoped that this wasn't affecting his friend's soulmate as well. It was possible that their body would be experiencing the same type of heat Ace was, which wouldn't be good.
Upon arriving at the village, Marco immediately asked if there was anyone who was extremely sick. As the group helped Ace cool off, the first division commander followed the mayor to your house. He knew then that his suspicions had been correct. You weren't fairing much better than your other half. The only way to fix this was for you two to meet. Marco brought Ace to your house.
When your eyes met with his, you felt a wave of relief wash over you. You instantly felt cooler than you had in the past two weeks, but you weren't cold. You sat up as he sat down. It was awkward. Neither of you knew what to say. Marco had everyone leave so that you and your soulmate could have some time alone. You both went to speak at the same time. Then insisted that the other go first. After a few minutes of the back and forth, you were both laughing.
Throughout the week, you and Ace spent a lot of time together. You got to know each other. You spent pretty much every day with him, listening to the stories of his adventures and the tales of him and his brother. By the end of the week, you felt like you had known him for years. You were sad that your time was coming to an end.
Ace didn't want to leave you behind, but you had a good life. You were happy and you had a family. You deserved to stay where you wanted. He couldn't make you leave. He tried to push out the thoughts of him not deserving to see your gorgeous smile every day or hearing you say his name or watching you struggle to hide your laughter when you thought of something funny, but he couldn't. A veil of sadness settled over his heart. He focused on packing up the ship so they could return to the Moby Dick. If he let his mind wander, he would never be able to leave.
So when Marco looked at you expectantly as they made their final rounds, he was confused. Why would his friend be looking at you like that? And when you showed up with a couple of bags in tow, a smile on your face, he was even more confused. What were you doing? That's when you told him what the pineapple head had done. Marco had asked you to join their crew. You were leaving your home to become a Whitebeard Pirate. To start the next chapter of your life with Ace.
Every day was an adventure with him. He had never been so excited in his life. He felt at home with you. You made him feel loved. With you, he began to feel as though he did deserve to live. He deserved to love and to be loved. And nothing would stop him now. He still had his struggles, but you helped him through them. Everything was right in his world.
