Every year, police ask the public not to hang out on Toronto’s frozen ponds and open waters, and every year, people do it anyway. This past weekend proved to be no different as people ventured onto the lake to skate, play hockey, and get a good view of the city’s skyline. "If you are skating in an area of the lake like Lake Ontario and you see open water not far then that’s not safe ice because that water flows and it can go underneath the ice where you are and that weakens the ice,” Barbara Byers, a senior research officer with the Lifesaving Society. This ice is very unstable, posing significant safety concerns for members of the public and their pets. Toronto’s waterfront stretches for 28 miles along the shore of Lake Ontario. Forty years ago it was a mess of concrete and derelict industrial buildings from its days as a major shipping port. But in the 1970s the government decided to transform it in one of the largest urban regeneration programmes in North America. The waterfront has traded factories, warehouses and roads for parks, apartments and bike lanes. Pangong Lake also known as Pangong Tso is a beautiful endorheic lake situated in the Himalayas and is 134 km long, extending from India to China. The rock has two holes at the base, which give it the appearance of a dragon who is drinking. The base of the stack has been reinforced with concrete to protect its foundations from the sea. On Vatnsnes peninsula in North-West Iceland, some 50 meters offshore stands the majestic Hvítserkur, a 15 meter's high monolith or sea-stack, an eroded volcanic dyke. It looks like an animal of some sort. It is quite spectacular and well worth a visit. Especially in the summertime, when you will find a lot of fulmar nesting on it, so it seems to be alive. It is half-white from their guano, thus the name Hvítserkur; "hvít-" = white and "-serkur" = a long shirt. Vik í Mýrdal is a remote seafront village in south Iceland. It sits in the shadow of Mýrdalsjökull glacier, which covers the Katla volcano. Reyniskirkja is a wooden church dating to 1929. Reynisfjara beach has black pebbles, basalt columns and the Reynisdrangar offshore rock formations. The cliffs of Reynisfjall mountain are home to seabirds such as puffins. Just west, the Dyrhólaey peninsula has a large rock arch. It is considered to be the warmest place in Iceland, however only by a degree two. During the winter months, temperatures can plummet to below freezing. Vík í Mýrdal is also the wettest place in Iceland and it is not uncommon to see rain even in summer.
