Utgard, the giants' stronghold of Norse mythology: . Utgard ("outer place"), in Germanic mythology, was the huge giants' stronghold in Jotunheim, where Loki, Thor and Thor's servant Thalfi found themselves in contests against unequal opponents. Loki failed to consume more food than wildfire; Thalfi could not keep pace as a runner with thought; and Thor was unable to drink the sea dry, pick up the sea serpent Jormungand or wrestle old age. When they left, the gods realised that Utgard was an illusion made by the frightened frost giants to deter Thor, their greatest enemy. . Photography: @ilonaramona thank you! The Gulon of Swedish folklore: . A monster with rather interesting habits found in the folklore of Sweden. Though it may have been around for much longer, it is first mentioned by the 16th century traveller Olaus Magnus, who describes it as somewhere between a lion, wolf and a hyena with a fox's tail and long, razor sharp claws. It was usually seen amid the northern snowfields where it lived on carrion. It's practise was to gulp down anything it could find, living or dead, eating eating ravenously until its body was swollen and distended. It would then seek out a narrow gap between two trees and squeeze itself between them, thus forcing out a build up of gases from its body and enabling it to feed again. It is said that this was the only point at which it was vulnerable to attack, and though it's flesh was never eaten, its blood was said to have aphrodisiac properties and was sometimes served, mixed with honey, at weddings. . Their name means 'sons of Kalevala or Kaleva' and they are considered extremely dangerous. Kaleva was a primordial being and warrior. They hate all human beings and given the chance they will destroy fields of growing grain and turn areas of rich harvest in to wasteland. They also like to destroy fine forests and all other kind of pleasures and beauties of this world. . Art: @teroporthan thank you! The Oats Goat of European folklore: . In the folklore of Eastern Europe, this is the name of the spirit of the growing oats and also the name given to the figure made from the last sheaf cut from the field of growing grain. In Prussia especially, the Oats Goat is a prominent field spirit, of whom children are warned, and reapers hurry with the work to keep ahead of the Oats Goat who pushes laggards from behind. In some parts of Germany, there are two such goats, a he-goat and she-goat. In the Grenoble region of France, a live goat is decked with flowers and ribbons and turned loose in the field: when the reaping is over it is caught and killed, and roasted for the harvest supper. It's skin is then made into a cloak, which is usually worn by the farmer during the threshing of the oats, but it can be transferred to any reaper who gets a backache. In Bohemia, a mummer dressed in straw and wearing goat horns is called the Oats Goat and is led from house to house during Shrovetide celebrations. He dances in front of houses, or enters and dances with the women of the household and is given food and money. . Art: @stitching_a_laugh_to_darkness thank you! The werewolf of Vaud, Susanne Prevost: . On April 22, 1602, three women were brought before the courts charged with witchcraft and werewolfery, all from the small south western town of vaud. Susanne Prevost and her fellow accused, Michée Bauloz and Jeanne de la Pierre, were said to be witches who had met with the devil. He had given them a secret recipe, made from disgusting things such as the fat of a hanged man and the blood of children, which they then rubbed on their bodies to change them into vicious werewolves. In this form they attacked several people, including a young child whom they ate completely, apart from the right hand. Although Michée Bauloz and Jeanne de la Pierre were only charged with kidnapping the boy, all three were charged with eating him. The other two claimed that Suzanne Prevost was their leader and had brought them to meet the devil, who was her master. According to legend, she was declared to have been a werewolf for a longtime beforehand and may have been responsible for many other killings. What became of the three was unknown. . Zmag Oghjeni Vuk of Serbia and Bosnia: . In Serbia and Bosnia, the Zmag Oghjeni Vuk ('Fiery Dragon Wolf') was a werewolf associated with the 15th-century ruler Despot Vuk. He was born with a birthmark in the shape of a sabre and was able to breath fire. He had a tuft of wolf hair that gave an inkling of his werewolfish capacities. He grew unbelievably large and was the only person able to overcome the fiery dragon that was said to have fathered him. He was able to turn into a werewolf at will at night and when the sun was overcast for long periods. His werewolf appearance was not only frightening but impressive to be seen. . The Basilic in French folklore: . In French folklore, Basilic was a dragon that haunted the area round the city of Vienne, taking cattle and people. it had a stare that petrified all it looked upon. This state of affairs continued until the brave knight Fretard overcame it, confining it to a well. However, Basilic was said to emerge every 10 years and could only be overcome if someone saw it before it could gaze upon the onlooker. it attempts to rise to the top of the well and if it should succeed in emerging, then things will continue as they were before. This seems to be a local legend related to the Basilisk. . Art: @johan_egerkrans_illustrator thank you! Sylph of European magical lore: . A Sylph is an elemental spirit of the air. The name was first used by the Swiss metaphysician Paracelsus in the early 16th century, derived from the Latin 'silva' (wood) and the Greek 'nymphe' (nymph). The leader of the Sylphs, who are invoked in magical workings where the cooperation of the winds is required, is called Paralda. They are said to be the spirits of young women and are heavily associated with the air and nature. . Photo: @galinakohvakko thank you! The Scottish vampire: . Stories suggest that certain well known historical figures have had encounters with vampires. One of the most famous was the celebrated Scottish king, Robert the Bruce (Robert 1). Once, king Robert was visiting a powerful lord of Berwick, where he was well entertained with food, drink, and dancing. During the festivities, a wild man from the forest was brought before the lord. He had been accused of poaching - the penalty for which was death. This man was known locally as a fearsome thug who had caused trouble for the people who lived on the lord's land, so the lord did not hesitate to order his execution. But the king intervened, and spared his life. However as soon as Robert left, the wild man was arrested once again and executed despite the king's opposition. Shortly after, a creature bearing a striking resemblance to the wild man began to stalk the area, breaking into houses, attacking people in their beds, and drinking their blood. Disease and illness also followed the vampire and spread throughout the area. Feeling desperate, the people called king Robert. King Robert instructed his soldiers to go to the executed man's grave to dig up the body, cut into pieces, and burn it. From that moment, the walking dead no longer troubled the people. It is said, however, that his ashes were placed in a jar and buried under a large stone near the town. If the stone is raised and the jar opened, the vampire will rise once more. . Vidar of the Norse pantheon: . Vidar was the silent and solitary god of Norse mythology. He was the son of Odin and the first giantess Grid, and lived in a place called Vidi, where all was quiet and peaceful. It was Vidar's destiny to avenge his father's death at Ragnarok, the doom of the gods and the end of the world. When the terrible wolf Fenrir had overcome Odin in a fierce and bloody struggle and swallowed him, Vidar stepped forward, smashed one of his well-shod feet against the wolf's lower jaw, and then with both hands he forced the upper jaw to open till the ravenous beasts throat was torn asunder. It is more than likely that the meaning of Vidar's own name refers in some way to this ripping in half. . Photo: @ilmiselvannakija Photography: @elsawellamoarts Thank you! Ran of the Norse pantheon and seas: . Ran, a stormy spirit of the sea, reflected the shifting moods of the ocean, sometimes helpful, sometimes harmful. She gathered sailors in her drowning net and dragged them down to the depths of the sea. There, with her husband, Aegir, she entertained her victims in her gleaming coral caves, which were lit by the shining gold of the sea. Ran loved gold, named named the flame of the sea, after the fluorescent quality of the Nordic waves. Sailors seeking Ran's favour wisely pocketed some gold for the trip. . The Banshee/Beansidhe: . It is the duty of the banshee or 'woman of the fairies' to foretell the death of an individual. Banshees are attached to particular families and their cry us only heard when a family member is about to die. Banshees are reported either to be young women of mournful aspect, or else to take the form of womanly creatures or hags. With eyes glazed white or red from weeping, she continually combs her hair with a gold or silver comb. The cries of the banshee are echoed by professional mourners or keeners 'bhean chaointe' who were engaged to maintain high piercing cries and moans or 'ochone' at a funeral wake. The very first being to set up a keening cry was the Irish goddess, Brighid, one of the Tuatha de Danaan; she wailed for the death of her only son, Rúadán, and that was the first keening ever heard in Ireland. I will be posting different kinds of banshee folklore in the near future! . Photo/edit: @jules_idunn thank you! The Bergman's bear of Russian folklore: . Reports of a giant bear of Kamchatka, a "God Bear" in Russian folk traditions, have circulated for centuries. In recent years, indeed, some scientific evidence has emerged to validate reports of a cryptid known as Bergman's bear. In 1920 the Swedish zoologist Sten Bergman examined the skin of a giant, black furred variety of the Kamchatka bear. Bergman wrote that the pelt "far surpassed" the size of any bearskin he had seen. Most notably, the black bears pelt was shorthaired, unlike the long coat of the normal Kamchatka bear. Bergman's 1936 paper also described a huge paw print, 15 inches by by 10.5 inches and a report of an equally outsized skull. This giant cryptid animal may well be extinct. On the other hand, it may not be. In a book called 'Bears of the world', writer Terry Domico observes that much of the Kamchatka peninsula has long been closed off for suspicious military reasons. A former Soviet official who did have access to the area told Domico that the black giants were still reported. What do you think of this cryptid? Do you reckon the military is trying to hide this giant cryptid species? And if so, why? . Art: @teroporthan thank you! Were-creatures and where they live: . Werewolves and shape-shifters are found all over the world and almost all cultures. However if we only look on those people who can turn into wolves, then they are largely to be found in Northern and Western Europe countries – such as Scandinavia – where wolves were at one time found in large numbers. Werewolf stories from urban places – towns and cities – were very few in number. But in the countryside, especially in areas that are or were once densely forested, the folklore concerning werewolves and wolf men is much more widespread. This is because the deep woodlands and trackless marshes provided an ideal place for them. These are the best places if you want to see a werewolf in his or her natural environment. Further afield, stories of people who can change into dog-like creatures appear in other countries and cultures. In Egypt and parts of North Africa and the Middle East, for instance, there are tales of sorcerers who can take the form of jackals, while in Japan tales of ladies who can change themselves into foxes are common. Among a number of North American tribes it was believed that their medicine men could turn themselves into coyotes by performing certain secret rituals and dances. In Finland, they can take the form of bears, while in some parts of Ireland it was believed that witches would often transform themselves into hares in order to drink from the udders of grazing cattles. In Africa and in South America, shamans and witch doctors can take on the form of lions or jaguars. What you encounter depends on where you are in the world. . Art: @mr_werewolf thank you!
