you are spring
Author: Wildehack (tyleet)
Rating: M
Word Count: 20,100
Summary: “You’re not bad,” Kelly says, shocked. “You could never be bad.”
*
Jack shakes his head hard, squeezing the pillow hard. “You don’t know,” he whispers. “Sam and Dean know.”
God makes a wish. His parents work some things out.
Commentary: One of my favorites ever.
Divergences from canon on 15x20, with Jack going back to life with Kelly and Cas because being God is weighting on him. At the same time, we see Dean and Sam struggling with their baggage and loses.
The POVs flow from Kelly to Dean, connecting them through their stories of confusion, family and love. And through Jack.
The fanfic is written beautifully! The characters are very much in character - in their actions, thoughts and feelings.
Kelly’s and Dean’s relationship with Jack are the main focus, but we also see Cas and Jack, Dean and Sam, Dean and Cas, Sam and Eileen…
The way the author created new God lore and the way they describe the scenes with Jack is so so so good.
Highly recommend it.

the cheapest room in the house
Title: the cheapest room in the house
Author: biggaybenny
Rating: E
Word Count: 89,336
Summary: what if instead of a very sincere and earnest love confession dean just found out cas was gay? no confession, no god-jack endgame. just post-s15 stupidity. just dean being deranged.
the dean downloads grindr for cas fic
Commentary: I always go on and on here on this blog about how great it is when Dean and Cas are in character in the stories, but there is one thing that is even more important - good writting.
The Cheapest Room in the House is a popular Destiel fanfiction for a reason. The first time I read the summary, I felt conflicted - I didn't like the premise. It felt too OOC.
Truth be told, I don't think a lot of what Dean and Cas act like in this story is in character with what they're like in the show. I don't think Dean would do this downloading Grindr thing, I don't think he'd be so oblivious about his own feelings and I don't think Cas would engage in physical affection with Dean without being honest about how he felt and knowing Dean felt it back. All of this makes complete sense in the story. And it's good. Amazing, in fact! Because the author ties is up with beautiful characterizations, inner monologues and dialogues. And I do believe Dean would have a hard time accepting he deserves love and shut himself off, just like Cas would keep secrets about how he felt and what he wanted because he believes he should be thankful for what he already has.
Being brave, impulsive, trusting feeling over thought, caring and, eventually, honest - these are all characteristics Dean and Cas have in canon and here.
While talking to Dean and Sam, Cas tells them he has no interest in having sex with woman - in fact, he is gay. Dean, overcompensating and acting on impulsive to avoid thinking, helps him by...downloading Grindr into his own phone and making an account for Cas. From them on, Dean and Cas spend their nights together talking to men on the app and, well, things to on from there (there's also hunting and really good conversations and scenes with Sam and Jack!).
The scene where they finally get together for real is one of my favorites I've ever read! It's so good and honest and raw and beautiful.

The Shape of Things to Come
Title: The Shape of Things to Come
Author: spiderglass
Rating: M
Word Count: 61,953
Summary: It almost feels like, if Dean went to sleep right now, he could get it back. Like he would slip right back into the dream, and it would pick up where it left off. But Dean doesn’t even want to, now that he can see that world for what it is: a cheap hallucination, poking at all his weaknesses, going right for the soft underbelly Dean never shows.
All that work. All that work Dean had done over the past few weeks, trying to numb himself and act like he’d forgotten about it. And now it feels like the Empty took Cas all of five minutes ago, all over again.
Or,
A post-15x19, forty one year-old Dean gets a taste of what twenty seven year-old Dean went through in 2x20, “What Is and What Should Never Be,” and sees how the shape of his own happiness has changed. Then life goes on, same as it ever was—except for the dreams he starts having at all hours of the day, and a familiar voice that's starting to sound a little too real.
Commentary: You don't have to go to far into this blog to know I'm a sucker for finale fix-its. It's my favorite trope! This story has everything I look for - Dean and Sam having conversations, hunting, Dean being really sad, Empty rescue, getting together and a soft little epilogue. Seems simple, and it is - we don't need huge stories to have huge feelings.
This story is so well written, so nice! As the summary says, we start in a Djinn dreams, which is super well written and makes sense with the show's lore. Dean notices something is weird, but is so happy with the life he is living and the Djinn is so strong that he wants it to be real. In the dream, he realizes he can't deny what he feels for Castiel - Dean is in love with him.
The we go on to follow Sam and Dean for a bit, and Dean is so so tired. That's when weird things start happening and there's hope they'll get to see Cas again.
Everything here happens for a reason. The Djinn dream isn't here just so Dean could think about Cas, but also has a huge role in the rescue plot. The author did such a great job with tying up this story!
The expansion of Djinn and Empty lore is amazingly done.
Very well written, in character and made with care and love.

Ninety One Whiskey
Title: Ninety One Whiskey
Author: komodokits
Rating: E
Word Count: 401,183
Summary: In the spring of 1944, the 104th Medical Battalion of the United States Army is disbanded, and its men reassigned to various infantry companies in preparation for their invasion of occupied France. For First Lieutenant Novak, this is less than helpful, as he has so far met his platoon’s designated medic a grand total of twice, and has both times found Sergeant Winchester to be the optimum combination of reckless, arrogant, and downright insufferable so as to make cohesive platoon function near impossible. When the time comes to move out, however, Castiel has to reconcile himself to the fact that men are going to go down and trust that Dean Winchester may well be the only person who can put them back together again. WW2 ETO infantry AU.
Commentary: You know that fanfic you read that for a while felt more real than canon? This happened to me and 91W. I started reading this not knowing it was a fandom classic – I read So Says The Sword, by the same author, fell in love with their writing and wanted more. I don’t usually read AUs, because often the characters are too out of character, but I gave this one a shot. Had to skip some scenes in the beginning to make sure I wanted to read it (to get to Dean and Cas’ scenes), but had to go back to read it after, because this story is AMAZING.
I don’t understand or care much about war, but the author is so good at storytelling that they made me want to go watch war movies.
The fanfic follows Castiel’s POV through WWII – he is a lieutenant and goes to Europe in 1944. Castiel is aware he is queer but hates it about himself – as would be expected of a man in that time. He meets Dean, a medic, who is funny, charming, impulsive, brave and begins showing interest in Cas, which is very dangerous in their context.
The author says in the tags it’s “not a nice story” – and maybe it’s not. As we follow Castiel in the war, he describes many details of what he sees and feels, many times causing the reader feelings and anxiety, fear, sadness and helplessness. He is a queer man in the 40’s, in the war, being a leader. That happens because the author is so so so so good, the way they write is so immersive. You can tell the author did their research about everything they talk about here.
Dean and Castiel’s relationship start as something not physical nor friendly, but…There’s something physical, of course, about what attracts them, that is described beautifully. Watching each other, their relationship also becomes admiration and interest. Cas has a very hard time with it, being scared most of the time. Slowly we see him fall in love with Dean, and Dean fall back.
The characters are incredibly in character, despite of the context. Castiel is very similar to season 5 Cas – lost, confused, angry, lonely. Dean is very similar to pre-hell Dean (and Dean in general) – understanding, laidback, focused, brave, compassionate, nurturing,
Unless you’re a very sensitive person who can’t read about violence, self-hate, death and other war related themes, please please read this story. It’s so good.
91W has two sequels (that are much shorter), called 4-F and At Ease.

six hundred sundays (and many more)

Title: six hundred sundays (and many more)
Author: sobsicles
Rating: M
Word Count: 15,689
Summary: Dean starts falling in love with him on a slow Sunday morning under slanted sunlight that slips through the gaps in the trees.
~~~
"When did it stick for you? When did your six hundred Sundays start?" Dean asks.
"It never started," Castiel admits. "It simply never stopped. My love for you is eternal—existing forever, without a beginning or an end."
Visually, Castiel's love is a circle. Aurally, it's an echo. Kinesthetically, it's breathing. Overall, it is not fate, and it is not chance; it is choice. He would not choose differently if he could go back and do it again, and that's why he didn't choose differently from the start.
Commentary: A good Cas POV is hard to come by. He is a creature so complex that the human mind isn't able to comprehend the way he things or even how he looks. As a result, often fics with his POV feel weird, out of character or naive.
The author manages to narrate Cas' thoughts is such, such a beatiful way. It's deep, it's straight-forward, it's smart, it's poetic.
A character trait both Dean and Cas have is bravery - it's hard to write bravery, because you have to think outside the box. In this story, both Dean and Cas are so so brave. Sure, they repress feelings and desires, because they're still them, but they're so brave when they can!
The story follow a post canon world, where Dean, Cas, Sam and Jack are in the bunker. Dean builds Cas a gazebo on his favorite place in the woods around the bunker. Cas reflects on how he believes he is witnessing Dean fall in love with him.
And the way the author describes what being in love feels like is so so so good!
Short enough to be read in an hour or two, will make your day better!
You Belong Among The Wildflowers
Title: You Belong Among The Wildflowers
Author: ImYourHoneyBee
Rating: E
Word Count: 94,797
Summary: Cas is gone and Dean doesn't know how to deal. Sunk deep into the worst depression he's ever been through Dean only pulls himself together when Jack comes to visit, intent on repairing his relationship with Castiel's son. Eventually, as a result of an offhanded comment Sam makes, Dean begins to dream of a better future and becomes determined to rescue Castiel from the Empty. It's a rough go, but he's successful and Cas is back.
Fed nightmares during his time in the darkness of an angel's afterlife, Castiel doesn't believe that Dean is real. Refusing to speak or to come out of the literal closet, will Cas let Dean persuade him that he really is saved?
Commentary: This is one of the first fics I read in this fandom, so I feel very nostalgic about it (well, not that it was that long ago).
The narrative of this story is pretty much devided into two parts - first we see Dean grief and then he gets Cas back from the Empty and we see them together (this part is longer).
I think the author did such a good job with the description of the feelings, thoughts and other behaviors Dean would've been going through. Dean is honest with himself about his feelings for Castiel and there are some great scenes of him being a good parental figure for Jack.
The story also explores Dean's and Cas' relationship with Jack, Claire, Sam, Eileen, Jody, Donna etc...all the characters have time to shaer with Dean and Cas, making the story have more layers and the characters be more complex.
If you consider the Empty lore we learn in season 15 canon (I often ignore it), then Cas was fed his worst nightmares there. It's like Hell for Angels and demons, but with mental torture, not just physical. So, when Dean rescues him from the empty, it makes sense that he thinks this is another nightmare.
The story goes on, Cas lives with Dean (they don't share a room lol), feelings are talked out etc etc.
I really enjoy this one, I think the way the author describes magic theory, explores lore and makes up spells is so creative and well done. One of my favorite Empty rescues in fanfic!
The down side is that it is overlly cheesy at times and there are some cringe lines and exchanges.
Ignite Your Bones
Title: Ignite Your Bones
Author: ilovehowyouletmefall
Rating: E
Word Count: 67,177
Summary: Even at his lowest, Dean still lets himself hope for something.
It’s fascinating.
“We're surrendering,” Sam finishes their little speech. “We're giving up.”
Chuck nods, as if he’s thinking it over.
But the eager glint in his eyes gives him away.
“Okay. Dean, kill Sam.”
*
Chuck takes the Winchesters up on their offer in 15x19. Dean, Cas, and Jack deal with the fallout for their relationships. It gets worse before it gets better.
Commentary: Dean kills Sam to save the world (and Cas) and feels guilty. He griefs with alcohol and isolation. The way his thoughts are described to us is beautiful, amazingly immersive.
Cas helps Dean through it, and I love his POVs. I love it because Castiel isn't perfect, and the author knows it - and Cas knows it, but he acts anyway.
Slowly, living with Cas and Jack, seeing Jody and Patience, and allowing time to pass, Dean cas find space for new things, new relatioships and a new life.
It's a beautiful story, and have reread several scenes of it since my first read.
Life Skills
Title: Life Skills
Author: ilovehowyouletmefall
Rating: E
Word Count: 26,052
Summary: After Metatron steals Castiel's grace, and Cas comes to live in the bunker, Dean spends a lot of time with him, sharing all of his favourite things. Dean can't help it if sharing things with Cas just makes everything better. Besides, it's Dean's job as Cas' friend to introduce him to the joys of human life. To teach him how to be human.
And if one of the experiences they end up sharing is sex with women, well... that's just part of Dean’s job as Cas' friend too, right?
The desire is triangulated, the rituals are intricate.
*
“You know you can’t turn Cas into a mini-Dean,” Sam said
“First, if I did, Cas'd be all set, 'cause I'm awesome,” Dean said. “Second, that’s not what this is about. Cas needs to know how to get by in the world. He needs someone to teach him how to just be a guy.”
Sam’s face scrunched up. “He already is just a guy.”
“But he doesn’t know how to be one,” Dean insisted, like it was an obvious fact, and Sam was a little dim for not getting it.
Commentary: I mean, yeah, it's smut.
But it's so well written! You can see by the summary that the author knows the characters. And it's so fun!
Dean invites Cas to a threesome to teach him about sex (this is after April). The story follows a series of hook ups the guys have with women they meet, and we see through Dean's POV how he starts to understand what all these feelings he has mean.
Overall, this story is a real fun time and I really enjoyed it.
I was inspired to create this blog not only for sharing the stories I like most, but also to have somewhere I can store and comment on them.
I mostly enjoy long fics (this way, I can get to know the author's version of the characters well and can feel more emotions), so if you're looking for oneshots, there's not that many :(
The posts are tagged according to length, rating, author, supporting characters are other characteristics - if it's canon universe, for exemple. All on Archieve of Our Own.
If you're looking for something especific, try starting here:
Crossing Lines
Title: Crossing Lines
Author: sometimeswelose
Rating: E
Word Count: 146,941
Summary: Two Deans, one Cas - it's not as sexy as it sounds
Or
An ethics lesson from Hell
Or
The one where Dean from the past meets Dean in the present. They're not sure they like each other very much.
Commentary: I’m down on my knees praying for this fic. I love it. It’s so good.
Dean gets hit with a curse, they seek Crowley for help and Crowley gives them a 24-year-old Dean to fix it. The story is set around season 15, but with a canon divergence: Dean and Cas have been secretly together (well, kind of) for a few years.
If someone told me that description on the previous paragraph, I might’ve laughed it off, thinking it would be a mess. It’s not.
The author shifts between POVs for Dean, Cas and Sam – and each of them is unique and completely in character. Each scene leads to the next in a way that you can tell how hard the author worked on this story.
Every character has something to do by themselves and with other characters – both Dean’s are struggling with being around each other, young Dean learns about himself and his family with Sam, Dean and Cas go through a rough path, young Dean gets to know Cas and slowly falls in love with him. Each one of them also goes through personal struggles, which show during their POVs.
They are all so smart! The author is either very smart or researched a lot, because each character shares so much knowledge about this that are so in character for them to be knowledgeable about.
The narration flows between present-day and flashbacks from Dean and Cas’ relationship and Dean’s life.
I found myself having to read the lines in this story as if I was mentally acting – putting intonation on the words – because I wanted to savor every detail of it. Every piece of dialogue is so well written and constructed that I felt like I’d be misusing the fanfic if I just rushed through it.
I could talk all day about Crossing Lines all day, but I’ll let you enjoy it for yourself!
Teaching Poetry to Fish
Author: aeli_kindara
Rating: M
Word Count: 52,312
Summary: In which Castiel teaches poetry to fish. Also, himself. Also, eventually, Dean.
(A series-long story, diverging slightly from canon after S14.)
Commentary: Cas is so smart. He is so smart and so lovely and lovable. And this author gets it.
This story is a retelling of Castiel’s plot on the show, starting with a few scenes of before canon and continuing to a beautiful, beautiful scene of him raising Dean from Hell.
From then on, the fanfic tells the story of the show by Cas’ POV – and if you’re wondering why you’d read a story about a show you’ve already watched, oh boy…this is not what you’re expecting.
The author explores and expands on scenes and ideas of the show. Even on scenes where the dialogue is word for word the same of the show, the descriptions in between, Cas’ thoughts and feelings are so, so good.
Cas also observes Dean and it’s so fun to catch clues of Dean’s feelings for Cas, while Cas himself is mostly unaware of it.
When the story diverges from canon around season 14 – Dean is having trouble sleeping because of Michael, so Cas helps him and ends up sharing some of the deepest parts of him – Dean and Cas become intimate and it’s so nice, they’re so good with each other.
If you’re a fan of Cas lore exploration or just a fan of good writing in general, don’t skip this one.
Splendor
Title: Nothing Equals the Splendor &  Trained to Make Your Mark
Author: RurouniHime
Rating: E & M
Word Count: 7,865 &  6,748
Summary: Maybe it’s the cynic in him. The hunter, always under the surface of any quietude he ever found. Or maybe it’s just that he has always had trouble with blind faith. But after a while (a blink? A decade? A century?), Dean raises his eyebrows, looks around, and says—
“Uh. No.”
It’s so close. Just so slightly imperfect. And maybe, he analyzes, maybe that’s the final knell of this bell called contentment. Dean’s experience with happiness has always been that last rise in the road, right before it turns. Right before fate comes barreling around the corner head on.
He turns in his spot on the bridge, and suddenly Sam is like a cellophane film through which he can see the light streaming, and the taste of cheap beer on his tongue is much, much older a memory than it should be.
“Oh, you’re good,” he says, and means it.
&
“I just think we should start making some kind of, I don’t know, backup plan because the way things are going—”
“Sam.”
“Once wasn’t a big deal, this place has held up against a lot, but it’s been two days now—”
“Sam.”
“—and if there’s much more of this, the walls might literally come down around us, without a grenade launcher.”
“Alright.” Dean might actually laugh, uncontrollably. This is the fifth time—fifth! He’s still counting on his fingers! Like a giddy kid!—the fifth time he’s had sex with Cas and this, this… this-ness, the shaking brick and sizzling iron, the shattering windows and the protesting alarms, it was supposed to stop after the first, but it hasn’t even slowed down.
Commentary: Double feature! This story begins with a fix-it of episode 15x20, but the true beauty of it lies on the interaction between the characters after Dean and Cas meet in part 1, and in the conversations Dean has with Sam and Cas in part 2. As well as Dean’s internal narration, which is in character and greatly done! Dean reflects about his relationships, about himself, about PTSD, about Cas, about Sam...
The author did such a good job with their style of narration, I felt connected with the characters, specially Dean, in every decision they made. I can’t get over Dean talking about his mental health in part 2, it’s so real! There’s such a good scene with Sam that you guys have to read! This is one of those (as well as many of the fanfic I recommend here) that I fell like tie in great with canon and helps fill some of the holes the finale left.
Pins and Feathers
Title: Pins and Feathers
Author: theskywasblue
Rating: E
Word Count: 19,480
Summary: There’s so much Dean wants to say that Cas deserves to hear. Dean wants to tell him everything, to tell him I wanted this. Nothing but a stupid friggin beach vacation. It was the biggest dream I could think of for us, and I wanted you here, almost more than anyone.
Dean gets his toes-in-the-sand ending, but there are still some things he needs to work out.
Commentary: This is a lovely finale fix-it where Dean, Sam, Cas, Eileen and Jack go to the beach. They have fun, they talk, they live!
While that is happening, Dean is struggling with all these thoughts and feelings about Cas, and everything he wants to say, but is too scared.
Nice, fun, well-written and in character!
Profoundly Different
Title: Profoundly Different
Authors: amireal and tiamatv
Rating: E
Word Count: 190,842
Summary: "Castiel?" Sam calls out, carefully. Both of them lower their guns but don’t put them away, yet: there’s no sign of a struggle, but the guy did just break out of an insane asylum by squishing an orderly. With a bureau that he shouldn't have been able to move. "We're not gonna hurt you. We're here to help. My name is Sam. This is my brother, Dean."
There's a loud silence. Dean can hear the wind rustling through the structure.
A deep voice suddenly speaks up. It’s coarse and raspy and sounds like it hurts coming out; he’s never heard anything like it. It sends shivers down Dean's spine.
"Dean?” the man asks. “Dean Winchester?"
(A Season 4 AU: what if the fallen angel Dean and Sam ran into was Castiel, not Anna?)
Commentary: When I saw the summary of this fic, I didn’t expect much from it. I honestly thought it wouldn’t be that good, because of the plot, but the writing on the summary was good, so I gave it a try. And ooooh boy, did it pay off!
The authors so SUCH a good job with immersion on this story - you feel everything Dean feels, because of how well they wrote it.
In this, Cas rebelled before he does in canon, just after saving Dean from Hell, and the aftermath of it is very well constructed. He ends up falling in a different time and living a human life before meeting Dean again. I won’t say much so I don’t spoil it for you, but Cas’ relationship with the Novaks is great!
Another strong point of this fic is the intimacy scenes - not just sex (although, yes, the sex), but also the kisses, and hand holding, and hugs, and looks. It’s all beautifully written and realistic (well, as realistic as one can be in SPN).
The ways the author counter the plot around the shift in the narrative is very interesting, you can tell a lot of thought went into it.
Revisions
Title: Revisions
Author: zeppazariel
Rating: E
Word Count: 127,149
Summary: From the beginning, Dean and Cas continue to find their way together over and over.
Chuck keeps erasing it.
Commentary: What if, simmilarly to the way some of the SPN crew tried to make Dean and Cas show their feelings on screen, only to be cut or eddited out, Dean and Cas tried again and again to be together, only to have Chuck rewritte over them?
This story is basically tons of first kisses and first times, over all the seasons, tying together on a very satisfying and well thought out ending.
I find myself coming back to this fanfic again and again to read some of my favorite scenes. I love the way it is written and I love the expansion on lore - it ties in with canon so nicely! Chuck wins, but they find a way.
The Rescue
Title: The Rescue
Author: theirprofoundbond
Rating: M
Word Count: 59,000
Summary:
While looking for a solution to defeat Chuck and bring everyone back, Sam, Dean, and Jack encounter the original Death, who tells them they need an archangel. So Sam and Jack will search the earth for Michael, while Dean enters the Empty to find Gabriel… and he’s not leaving without Cas.
Because Dean has a soul, the Empty isn’t nothingness. He crosses vast, punishing landscapes, grappling with his feelings for Castiel while memories of the two of them haunt him—and memories of his rescue from Hell resurface. As Dean travels deeper into the Empty he discovers that its residents are awake, and they want revenge. Dean’s got to reach Castiel before they do, but he’s racing toward a secret in the heart of the Empty that will change everything.
Commentary: One of my favorite fanfictions ever. Not just Supernatural, but in general. Such such such a beautiful story. I can’t get over it.
Dean walks the Empty searching for Cas and Gabriel, entering a journey that is so complex, so well thought out, so well written. As he walks, he goes through various biomes, meets some old acquaintances and thinks. He thinks about himself, about Cas, about their relationship. He remembers moments they shared and rethinks them, realizing maybe there’s more to it than he had previously thought.
Meanwhile, Sam and Jack go on the search for Michael, traveling the world together.
There’s not one single scene in this where I was bored. Every character is well written, every action makes sense, every conversation is so beautiful.
This story explores and expands the lore in a way I WISH the canon could’ve had. There’s things they explain and fix about canon that I had never seen anywhere else and it works so so so well. I won’t say anything about it here, because I think you have to experience it yourself. Trust me. It’s worth it.
And there’s art to go with it!!
Just Being
Title: Just Being
Author: Englandwouldfall
Rating: T
Word Count: 88,991
Summary:
“That’s —- never really how it’s worked for me. Happiness in the being.” Dean says, the words dragged out from his chest, excavated with effort and pain. He’s burned out of anger for now but every muscle in him is poised, on edge, ready for a fight, just like always.
(In which they actually talk about everything).
Commentary: Tired of reading fix-it fics where Dean and Cas barely talk about anything before they kiss and are happy forever? Well, me too! Just Being definitely filled that hole for me.
Cas returns from the Empty with Jack’s help and he and Dean talk about it. They talk about pretty much everything, while still living their lives in the bunker with Sam (and sometimes Eileen) and going on hunts.
Of course, not everything is perfect. There’s still arguments, miscommunication and the usual Dean and Cas shenanigans, but they, well, talk about it.
I’m very much into the idea of Dean being very comfortable with talking about sex, but having a hard time talking about feelings. It’s all addressed in the story.
Cas is an angel still, but has to go to Heaven every once in a while to strengthen his grace, which is a hard time for Dean.
Dean and Sam talk a lot as well, about their feelings and Dean’s sexuality. It’s so nice!
Jack isn’t around much, but he does show up sometimes to hang out!
There is a sequel (currently a WIP): Just Having
(The author doesn’t explore the lore much, so it might sometimes leaves you thinking “Whaaaat?” in a very similar way the show does - but, it’s not the main point of the plot, so it’s not something that ruins the immersion or experience.)
