Guided: Tactile Awakening

The following is a guided sequence of somatic meditation. Read it a few times or record yourself reading it so that you can follow the directions on your own.
Feel your entire body. No need to think about your body or perceive it from the mind. Simply inhabit your whole body with gentle attention. Perhaps imagine how you'd engage your body when in a playful game or immersed in dance and music. Be present with your body intimately, directly.
If you start thinking more than feeling, clap your hands suddenly and loudly. Once may do the trick but several loud, sharp claps may also be called for. Use intuition and implement this whenever necessary throughout the exercise. Also, don't tense up when you clap. Let it be like a welcome splash of cold water.
Relax the whole body and mind. Savor the mask of tension slipping away.
Feel your feet and focus on them. Notice there is a physical sensation of the foot, a sensation of energy within that foot (think of it as the foot's mood), and then the space that spontaneously knows the foot without using the mental seat in brain. Tune into yourself as that knowing space.
Once you start to feel like you are that space, allow the physical and energetic layers of sensation to relax upon the space of you. At some point in time you may have noticed that it can be difficult to relax a part of the body when we feel tense. If we focus on the part we want to relax, sometimes it has the opposite effect and strengthens the tension. This is because attention and energy are connected and if you put your attention on the physical and/or energetic part of the body without first resting in the knowing space, you will just add more charge to an already overstimulated area. Whereas with the method of feeling the knowing space as primary engagement of attention, energy is allowed to be released from areas of tension into that spaciousness.
After doing this with your feet, move onto the next portion of your legs. Feel them from within, feel yourself as the space that knows them, relax the physical and energetic sensations. Then do knees and so on. Continue combing through the physical body one section at a time until you've run through everything from the top of your head to the tips of your fingers. When you stop at the pelvis, gut, chest, and head, find the center point within those areas and feel yourself to be centered there. Feel from those points. Then let go and move on to the next spot.
Feel the entire body at once. Note how this feels different from when you initially experienced your whole body at the beginning of the exercise. Perhaps you feel more grounded and seamless now, or something else more thorough and noticeable.
Feel into the centers of the head, chest, gut, and pelvis at once. Feel from those centers, experience from those spaces. Feel the whole body and then begin to notice how your skin has become permeable and that the knowing space of awareness within your body is continuous with the knowing awareness of the room's space. All the while remaining rooted in those bodily centers. Breathe and relax.
After enjoying the experience for a time, shift your attention back to the body and scan through it once more.
Then, finally, go lie down. :)
