jurassic park has a good philosophical message but unfortunately the only thing i ever take away from watching jurassic park is "god i wish i could go to jurassic park." like yeah it's a blatantly obvious don't create the torment nexus scenario, but this torment nexus has DINOSAURS.

Learning anything about marine mammal training will make you re-evaluate so much of your relationship with your own pets. There is so much force involved in the way we handle domestic animals. Most of it isn’t even intentional, it just stems from impatience. I’m guilty of it myself!
But with the exception of certain veterinary settings where the animal’s health is the immediate priority, why is it so important to us that animals do exactly what we want exactly when we want it? Why do we have to invent all these tools and contraptions to force them to behave?
When a whale swam away from a session, that was that. The trainer just waited for them to decide to come back. If they flat out refused to participate in behaviors, they still got their allotment of fish. Nothing bad happened. Not even when 20-30 people were assembled for a procedure, and the whale chose not to enter the medical pool. No big deal. Their choice and comfort were prioritized over human convenience.
It’s almost shocking to return to domestic animal medicine afterwards and watch owners use shock collars and chokers and whips to control their animals. It’s no wonder that positive reinforcement was pioneered by marine mammal trainers. When you literally can’t force an animal to do what you want, it changes your entire perspective.
I want to see that mindset extended to our domestic animals.

I still don't understand the lengths that people will go to to justify touching someone's dog without permission, so let me break this down:
It is really dumb to touch or approach an animal you do not know without clear confirmation that it is alright for you to do so.
It is incredibly gross and entitled to touch somebody else's belongings without direct permission from them.
A strangers pet is literally both a strange animal and somebody's property. Do not touch without permission.
"But if they're walking their dog in public they obviously want their dog to be pet-" NOPE! Nu-uh. That is blatantly untrue. Some quick reasons why somebody might have their dog in public and may not want people approaching and petting the dog:
The dog is a service animal
They couldn't get anyone to watch the dog but still needed to run an errand
They've been out all day and are done socializing and just want to finish up what they're doing
The dog is becoming stressed and they need to get away from people
They just got the dog and are slowly acclimating it to public situations and want to keep interactions as controlled as possible
They think you look suspicious, irresponsible or intimidating and don't want you putting your hands on their pet
They are traveling with the dog and are just taking it out for some fresh air
They are a normal person who doesn't want a stranger touching their dog without asking permission

i love the good aquarium au! i want to see the fishes happy 🩷o🩷 How do the sirens interact with mc in this version? 🩷
Sans: He has to wait much longer than his bad AU counterpart to get to 'play' with her. This aquarium is very safety-focused, and unwilling to have anyone even near his open tank, let alone in it. Despite his obvious obsession and courting displays, Mc remains safely behind thick barriers and high out of his reach- the only chance he'll get is if he proves he can behave, and Mc herself is the one who approaches management about the subject of swimming with him.
Her presence clearly has benefits on him, so she spends a lot of time on his shifts, talking to him from up on the railings or entertaining him through the glass, sometimes just doing homework by the dappled blue light of his tank. He does occasionally attempt to pull her into the water, whether he's breaching and knocking the railing or grabbing a feeding pole and yanking it (in the hopes of yanking her in with it)... but he's always unsuccessful.
It gives them time to get to know one another more. Time for him to mellow, realise that just because she leaves when her shift is over doesn't mean she won't come back. Time, so that when they do finally make physical contact, it's a gentle and mutual experience that leaves him feeling like things in his world are going to be okay.
Red: Again, poor Red has to wait a lot longer in this AU to get to swim with his girlfriend. But not as long as Sans. Since Red's so well behaved with humans, his keepers interact with him a lot more closely (albeit while wearing plenty of hand and arm protection), giving him lots of chances to flirt with her close-up. He gets many more opportunities than Sans to show that he can behave with her; though 'behaving' still includes grabbing her butt if she lets her guard down too long.
... In this AU, the aquarium knows Red considers her his mate. Mc does too. After she was suddenly hired, the first thing management did was put her on a pretty intense and in-depth learning course. Now even if he's flirting like a siren she knows exactly what's going on. Initially, it made the aquarium cautious about letting her swim with him- but since he's never going to be released, it might be alright after all. It does make life easier when it comes to things like giving him medicine; he doesn't bite when it's his mate doing the medical checkup.
Skull: Mc ends up interacting physically with Skull a lot sooner than anyone intended. At first, there was obviously zero contact thanks to his kill, she'd only even THINK of interacting physically with Skull if she was completely confident he'd never hurt her. And that kind of confidence would only come from a long while working with him, perhaps years.
... Thing is. He's a clever boy, he wants Mc's affection. And he won't wait years. He makes a 'hobby' out of breaking security measures and pulling her into the tank- at first it's a terrifying incident, but as it happens over and over, it loses its shock value and becomes something of an in-joke at the aquarium. Especially since he never actually does anything... just pulls her in, cuddles her, then politely sets her back on the side of the tank like nothing happened. No matter what they do, Skull just finds increasingly more and more complicated and innovative ways to snatch her into his pool.
Eventually, they can clearly see he's not going to kill her- and they decide it's probably just easier for everyone if she interacts with him in person. He's going to grab her anyway, may as well let him do it before he finds a way to break every security measure they have.

guys, remember when there's vocal majority of people who:
believe shipping iterators (Aside from moon and pebbles) is incest because they're made by the same creators
think shipping slugcats is zoophilia
think this fandom is becoming an undertale fandom equivalent
treat inv as a joke and not a fleshed out character
disregard nightcat from the main slugcat cast
think artihunter is the only ship with an audience
think deviating from the original design (going batshit crazy designing) is too much and is no longer *the* character
think shipping artificer with scavengers is weird (debatable if this is still a vocal majority)
believe making artificer soft and not an all-violent slugcat is "out of character"
think literally any harmless fun au stuff whatever is weird and also "out of character"
perhaps some people still think these today, but because large creators and many people are more vocal than before, we see less of this nowadays.
whether we are changing for the better or worse, its up to you.

Luckily the "what if the SHARK impregnated our ray???" seems to be dying down and bigger news organizations have the corrected information in their articles, but I wanted to share this great blog post by marine conservation biologist David Shiffman that covers both the cool actual science that got overshadowed while actually calling out the facility for how unscientifically they handled it and for the fact that they doubled down (esp since newer media they've put out is softly backtracking and it looks like they're attempting to play it off as a joke that the news misreported. Nope. They put the idea out there like it was as possible as parthenogenesis while calling themselves scientists at a "shark lab")
From the conclusion:
Unfortunately, poor handling of this story has made it likely that we are on track for another year where the most-shared news story about a shark or ray is pseudoscientific nonsense, rather than about their dire conservation needs, their importance to marine and coastal ecosystems, or amazing new discoveries about them. As a longtime supporter of zoos and aquariums and the roles they play in public science education, I am especially troubled by some of the public-facing communications here. If your goal is sharing knowledge with the public, there’s value in gaining accurate knowledge about the subject yourself first. Sharing wrong facts is not “raising awareness” or educating the public, and falsely claiming “anything is possible, don’t trust the experts” is, to put it mildly, not helping the ocean.
It's a great article to drop in if the "omg shark/ray babies???" keeps spreading. Or if you just enjoy niche science drama. The aquarium world doesn't get much of that

Zoo
(James Potter / Regulus Black | 368 words)
For @jegulus-microfic prompt: cat
“Look Harry over there.” Regulus points toward a large enclosure with giraffes. He is holding his son in his arms. The boy is constantly wiggling making Regulus worried he will drop him. But Harry refuses to sit stroller and they are outside for too long for them to expect him to walk anymore. James is leaning against the handles of the stroller sipping his slushie.
“Do you see them? These are giraffes. They are the tallest on earth.” Regulus is explaining to his son without noticing that Harry is not paying attention at all.
“Papa, papa! Kitty!” Harry shrieks.
“No, it’s a giraffe.” Regulus corrects.
“Down, down.” Harry insists trying to wiggle from Regulus’ embrace. As soon as he puts him on the ground Harry starts to toddle towards the bench not even glancing back at the giraffes nor his father. The thing that caught his attention is indeed a black cat.
James laughs at Regulus’ pure disbelief. “Gently, Harry,” James calls after Harry who is now trying to pet the cat.
“But…” Regulus opens his mouth. “…there are giraffes over there…” Regulus gestures helplessly.
“He found a cat.” James holds the laughter.
“But we are at a Zoo...”
“The cat is pretty cute though.”
“The tallest animal on earth…”
“Look how happy it makes him.”
“He never saw giraffes before…”
“But he found a cat.”
Regulus turns to his husband. James is biting his lower lip in an attempt not to laugh at him. Which is truly hard since Regulus looks completely lost. In the end, they spend over an hour at the same spot with Harry petting the cat grinning widely.
“It made him happy, Reg. It doesn’t matter.” James holds him around his waist as Regulus pushes the stroller with sleeping Harry in it.
“I know. But I wanted him to learn about new animals.”
“We can watch Madagascar tomorrow,” James suggests. Regulus rolls his eyes because no it’s not the same and also, he suggested it only because it’s James’, not Harry’, but James’ favourite cartoon that he saw thousand times before. But well, his son did have a good day and Regulus is already planning another trip to Zoo to have another try.
