please don’t fall in love (without me) [chapter nine]

summary: After being set up on yet another awkward blind date by his parents, Pat has had more than enough. To stop them from interfering - or rather, to shock them into never interfering again - Pat enlists his childhood rival to be his fake boyfriend. It’s only when everyone starts to genuinely believe them that Pat and Pran realize they just might be in over their heads. a/n: This fic is set in a canon-divergent universe where Pran was never transferred to another school and their university friends are also their high school friends. At the start of this fic, Pat, Pran, and Ink are 17 years old, while Pa is 16 years old. Fic title is from the song I Can’t Fall In Love Without You by Zara Larsson.

“Sorry, I…I’m sorry. You’re right - no matter what, our parents aren’t just going to forgive and forget. All that stuff my dad said to me about you, about our ‘relationship’, about how I…how I’m…” His voice cracked; he trailed off with a restless shake of his head. “He’s never talked to me like that before, and now he talks like that every day. Like I failed him. And it’s all my fault.”

“Pat,” Pran said softly.

“I just wanted him to let me date who I want.” Pat’s voice was much smaller now, weak and defeated in a way that made Pran’s chest hurt. “I didn’t think things would get this bad. And I made everything worse for you, too. Your mom is mad at you, your friends - well, mostly Wai - are fighting with my friends all the time, and your crush thinks you like someone else.”

Pran shivered at the mention of his crush, something they hadn’t talked about since the day they started asking each other silly, innocuous questions in this very room. True to his word, Pat had barely mentioned him since Pran asked him not to, and Pran certainly wasn’t about to bring him up himself. Still, Pat had also been acting a little strange ever since.

At first, Pran figured it was because they were learning how to exist in each other’s space in ways that they’d never done before, that Pat’s occasional bouts of odd behavior stemmed from not knowing how to talk to Pran, to be around him, without it ending in an argument or a fistfight. Pat saying he knew they would never like the same boy, Pat kissing Pran’s cheek when he thought they were alone, Pat freaking out when Pran saw his lockscreen - they all played in Pran’s head over and over again like a movie montage, only he wasn’t sure what these particular scenes had in common. Or rather, he did have one theory in mind, but he also had a sneaking suspicion that entertaining the idea would only end in heartbreak.
