I'm Gen X and I'm having the same problems as Gen Z. Mostly it's caused by living in a country that is teetering on the brink of white Christian nationalism, where most people are one bad day away from financial crisis, in the middle of a climate crisis.
Voting blue won't solve all these problems right away, but it's a step in the right direction.

A new CBS News poll is another to contribute to the narrative that there is something wrong with President Joe Biden's age while Donald Trump's age and mental fitness are going unquestioned.
But as a young voter and host of "iGen Politics," Victor Shi observed, the same poll shows a record 65% support for Biden among voters under 30. For voters between 30 and 44, Biden enjoys 56% support. The lowest amount of support for Biden comes from those over 65.
The official question read: "If next year's 2024 presidential election is between Joe Biden, the Democrat, and Donald Trump, the Republican, who would you vote for?"
Comparing it to Donald Trump, who had 35% for those under 30, 44% for those ages 30 to 44.
The poll also shows just how important abortion is to young voters. Nearly half of voters under 30 (47%) said that the issue of abortion makes them more likely to vote for Democrats. That compares to 27% who said the GOP stance makes them more likely, and 25% said it didn't matter.
When asked what qualities Americans want in a leader, they said tough (67%), caring (66%), no-nonsense (62%), calm (61%) and energetic (58%). When voters talk about Biden's qualities they see him as calm (63%), predictable (61%), caring (50 percent) and has him at "no-nonsense" just at 35%. By contrast Trump is viewed at 55% on "no-nonsense." That said, he didn't even register on "calm" or "caring."
As Shi assessed, "the media constantly talks about age but they fail to mention other positive things that polling shows — like that the Republican Party is weakening fast or more young voters say they will vote for Biden in 2024. These things also matter…just not to [the mainstream media]."
The toplines of the poll can be read here.

Oh, Republicans would LOVE to prevent young people from voting. And it is easier for them to be FOR that than what they really want: for all non-white, non-“straight” people to be banned from voting too.

Hey so… not advocating for anyone here, but this feels like something y’all should know about.
Tumblr media
PBS article
Tumblr media
WaPo article
And another WaPo article, I guess.
I don’t love that there aren’t a lot of sources on this, but as far as I can tell it’s a fairly new thing (earliest info on Clear Choice is from 2 weeks ago).
Suuuuuuuuuuuuper glad a bunch of strangers who somehow can’t find a decent candidate in a country of over 200 million adults have decided WE’RE all too stupid to decide between more than two options. Instead of, you know… picking better candidates to prop up.

In Alabama, two harmful bills have recently passed Senate and the House. It has been sent to the governor where it is believed to be signed. These two bills are SB 129 and SB 1.
SB 129: This is an Anti Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion act. It will take away gender neutral bathrooms, strip state funding from DEI programs within public universities and schools, bans DEI events, and bans the teaching of "divisive concepts". This will greatly disrupt the education environment, especially since it is incredibly broad and can be used for basically anything that may be seen as "divisive". This will also lead to the loss of jobs, as those who work on the DEI departments will likely be fired.
SB 1: This bill completely hinders the ability for voters to vote through absentee ballot as it will make it so people who aid absentee voters, whether it be showing them how they work or helping them deliver it like paying for the gas to drive there, can be charged with a felony. This will greatly impact a large amount of people, especially university students who are not registered to vote where their university is.
They are trying to silence and erase us. They are trying to make it so our voices cannot be heard by hindering our ability to vote. We CANNOT let them do that. This will hurt POC, lgbtqia+, and every minority community.
They think by ignoring us that gets rid of us, but we are still here. Please vote and call your representatives. Make your voice be heard whether they like it or not.
If your state is taking similar actions, do not stand by.

Add this to the list of Democratic worries ahead of the midterms: Younger voters — a cornerstone of the party’s electoral coalition — make up a smaller share of early and absentee voters so far than they did in 2020.
More than 15 million voters have already cast their midterm ballots, according to the United States Elections Project. But young voters have contributed to a smaller fraction of that turnout compared to this time two years ago, according to interviews and a POLITICO analysis of voter data.
The party has had high hopes that younger voters motivated by the Supreme Court’s scuttling of abortion rights and President Joe Biden’s cancellation of some student debt would turn out in force — and help them to defy losses that the party in power typically suffers in midterm elections.
They could still show up to the polls on Election Day. But their disappearance from the ranks of early voters so far puts Democrats at a disadvantage, because the party still has to chase their votes instead of banking them ahead of Nov. 8.[...]

16- and 17-year-olds will be able to vote for the European Parliament in Belgium for the first time this year.
Belgium knows a system of mandatory voting, in the sense that showing up to vote is compulsory - you don't have to vote for anyone if you don't want to, you can abstain from voting right then and there, but you do have to show up. For this reason, the Constitutional Court of Belgium ruled this would also need to be the case for 16- and 17-year-olds as well.
This would mean they would be susceptible to being sanctioned if they fail to turn out. However, yesterday, it was decided by the government that young people will not be given a fine if they don't turn out.
While those over 18 can still be fined and sued, in practice, people who don't turn out to vote aren't usually prosecuted.
Voter turnout in Belgium is one of the highest in the world, with 90% in the last federal elections (2019). Elections are always held on a Sunday. (I'm always so confuses when elections are held on weekdays in other countries, haha)
Mandatory voting was written into the Constitution in 1893, after a general strike organised by the then existing Belgian Labour Party (the first socialist party in Belgium). Voting was made mandatory so that bosses could not pressure their workers, who were usually from lower social classes, not to go vote (by making them work or threatening to fire them, for example).
If you live abroad, you can vote by mail. You can also vote by proxy.

you young people decided--and saved-- this year's midterms.
dont let yourself become disheartened by the election results. we held the line.
because young people voted, we did not see the "red wave" that conservatives so desperately wanted. because young people voted, we saw people of color elected, women elected, LGBTQ+ people elected, small amounts of marijuana decriminalized, antislavery ballot measures approved (i know, in 2022). Because young people voted, we have pro-choice, anti-racist, pro-union, candidates in office. Because young people voted, trump-endorsed candidates lost their elections.
the fact that we did not lose is a win. it could have been so, so much worse. thank you, young voters.
P.S. to the people with runoff elections (see Georgia), go vote again. we are so close.

“Imagine if in every place in this presentation where she references campuses, she talked about African Americans. Or every place she says students, she instead talked about Latinos. There is a subtle but real bigotry that goes on when people target young voters because of their age.” – Marc Elias in the WaPo [behind a paywall]
Okay, "young voters"--you know what to do.

Student activists unite with SEE Alliance
The Social Equity through Education (SEE) Alliance Sarasota is calling all young and passionate social activists to join in the fight for equal and accessible voting. Over several years, the state of Florida has been determined to make the voting process difficult for its marginalized citizens. This includes legislation that increases the fines for third-party registration groups, along with a…
