Blupjeans Week Day 1
It's @blupjeansweek!
Blupjeans week last year was the thing that encouraged me to start writing fics, so it's been fun to play with it again! Like last year, it's loosely connected (so far anyway!). So, now I'll stop blethering and here's some words.
Day 1 - refuge
16 hours to go.
16 hours until he tanked his viva, fucked up everything he’d been working for, and his supervisor says he hadn’t ever believed Barry was capable, he just wanted his fees... Well, John would definitely say that if Barry could get hold of him but it had become abundently clear over the course of his postgrad research that John wasn’t the easiest guy to reach. Which might not be a problem if it wasn't his literal job to support Barry through his PhD.
At this point Barry hadn’t heard from him in two weeks despite a variety of progressively more panicked emails. The last conversation they had was John's particularly un-comforting statement that Barry should “...expect majors" because "it’s not the worst thesis I’ve ever read, but it certainly isn’t the best.” Barry's secondary supervisor hadn’t even bothered to show up for that meeting, so it was anyone’s guess what his take was. Barry assumed it wasn’t great.
He grabbed the pot from the coffee machine he’d abducted from the kitchen a few days ago and perched on his desk instead. He debated swigging straight from it, that seemed more efficient than using a mug, plus, his hand seemed to be shaking a bit and he didn't want to risk trying to pour it into a mug then into himself - he needed every drop to keep him awake long enough to work out how to fix this disaster.
“Knock knock! This is your 16 hour anxiety check in.” Barry’s door creaked open, but Lup didn’t appear. “Barrrrooollllld?” She sing songed, then added hopefully “...have you finally decided to sleep?”
“Come in Lup.”
“Damn, you’re still up.” Oh, of course she was disappointed. She was probably sick of having to baby him through his anxiety. “...Not that I don’t want to see you, I was just hoping you were getting some rest.”
Barry held up the coffee pot in a cheers motion then took a swig from it. He was fine, this was fine, but if Lup left in disgust he could get back to scribbling increasingly unhinged and hard to read annotations on his sticky notes and trying to work out how to pull this disaster over the finish line.
"Doing totally fine, huh?” Lup eyed him disapprovingly. “Barry, you have to take a break. You're going to crash in the middle of it if you keep this up. You've got what, like 15 and a bit hours?" She waited for him to nod in affirmation. "Cool, then you've got time to sleep."
He didn't have time to sleep, he had to try and plug the holes in the sinking ship that represented four years of his life. Suddenly Lup was in front of him, he hadn't noticed her moving, but she had appeared and was gently prying the sticky note monstrosity he hadn’t realised he’d picked up out of his hand. "No, I need to…"
"Sleep." Lup said. "You need to rest. There isn't a single thing in here you don't know. It's fucking brilliant, no, don't argue with me, I've read it." Barry snapped his mouth closed, he wanted to protest, but he wasn't entirely sure he could remember what he was arguing with, there was no fight left in him. "Now give me the coffee pot, Barold." He gripped it more firmly. No, not even for Lup. He couldn't relinquish this, it was the only thing keeping him awake. Lup raised and eyebrow. “Barold, don’t make me full name you. I'll do it! Hand over the pot.” Lup held her hand out expectantly.
"I'll fall asleep."
"That's the idea my guy. C'mon, gimme the sweet sweet bean juice. You don't need that where you're going."
"Where I'm…? Where am I? I'm here." Barry looked down to check.
Lup used his moment of confusion to swipe the coffee pot. Usually it wouldn’t have worked… probably, okay, it would have, but slower and he would have protested more. Right now his hands felt too heavy to even think about taking evasive action. "Yoink!" Lup said triumphantly, holding it aloft. Then he blinked and she didn't have the coffee pot any more. Maybe she magicked it somewhere? Barry turned his head to try and find it, and then she was tugging at his hand. "Not here, Bear, somewhere comfy."
"The chair's comfy, it's ergonomic." He paid a lot of money because the guy in the shop was really confident about that.
Lup snorted and tugged harder. "Barold Jorts Bluejeans, you're coming with me."
"My name isn't…"
"...Ssssh." Lup might have been laughing. Barry wasn’t entirely sure, maybe it was him actually? Should stand? Oh, actually, he was up and moving and Lup still had hold of his hand and maybe she didn't have to let it go and she could just keep holding his hand and he could hold hers and maybe she’d have a nap with him. They stopped.
"This is your room." Barry wasn't entirely sure how they'd got there, time was doing strange things.
"Yup, cha'girl decided you couldn't be left unattended in yours, it's too full of anxiety, even if I get you to sleep you'll marinade in it. So, we're here." Lup pushed the door wide.
Her bed had developed some kind of blanket canopy, there were string lights strewn around, and he could hear the soft patter of rain even though there wasn't a cloud in the sky. "It's… this is… magic. You made it all magic."
"Uh huh, now get in." Lup lifted a corner of blanket, it revealed a whole mess of pillows and blankets waiting inside. The bed looked so cosy, so inviting, so much better than his boring bed. He shouldn't, he really shouldn’t, he should study more, he couldn't afford to get off track. "That’s it, Bear." Oh. He was in the process of crawling in, and he was comfy. He flopped bodily into the bed and everything smelled of Lup’s orange body wash. Maybe he could just live here.
"I should do more prep." He mumbled, and sank into the pillow nest, rubbing his face on a soft fleece blanket.
"Uh huh." Said Lup.
"There's… I need to… you see, I have..."
"I'll wake you up in a few hours, sleep tight, Bear."
“Sleep tight Lup.” Barry mumbled from the depths of his blanket cocoon.

Being Bam’s Best Friend Who Has A Crush On Jess Would Include: (Jackass)
This was an anonymous request, I believe. I’m planning to do a full fic with a concept similar to this, which is the brainchild of @butttxray, so this one will probably have similar ideas to that one. This will span from like Bam being in high school to around the filming of Viva La Bam and all that.
Warnings: Gender Neutral Reader, Cursing, The usual grossness that comes with Jackass and CKY, nothing too sexual, Jess is only a year older than you so nothing weird in terms of age gaps

Okay so first off, I think the relationship you’d have with Jess prior to the two of you having a mutual interest in each other would depend on when you and Bam became friends. If you and Bam befriended each other in elementary or middle school, then I think your crush on him would be more along the lines of a typical “crushing on your friend’s older brother” kind of relationship. I mean, how could you not crush on your friend’s nice, cool, interesting older brother who has his own rock band? It would be the kind of thing where you’d get at least a little nervous every time you’d see him at the Margera house or at the skatepark, and you’d probably have to force yourself not to blush or stutter over your words. Nothing too unusual for a younger person crushing on a (slightly) older guy. Meanwhile, if you and Bam became friends later on, like in ninth or tenth grade, then the fact that Jess is Bam’s older brother would probably mean less to you. I can still see you finding him attractive and thinking he’s cool and nice and funny, but it wouldn’t have anything to do with him being slightly older, and you wouldn’t be quite so nervous around him. It would be less of a puppy love crush and more of a normal crush.
Regardless of when you’d meet Bam or what kind of crush you’d have on Jess, I definitely think you and Jess wouldn’t interact much up until around 1994/1995, when you and Bam would be about halfway through high school and when the friend group would really start recording a lot of the pranks and skits they do together. You’d see him occasionally while at Bam’s house or while you and Bam were out somewhere, but it would always be very short encounters. Jess is a nice guy, so talking to him would be pleasant enough, but I feel like he’d probably be a little busy with his band or just wouldn’t really know what to say to you since you’re Bam’s friend and not his own. If you asked him how he was or how his band was doing, he’d definitely answer and then ask a few questions of his own just to keep the conversation going, but it wouldn’t last long and he’d soon head off to band practice or to a music shop or wherever else he was going. By 1995, though, the CKY friend group would be hanging out a lot and filming clips of pranks and skits together pretty often, and both you and Jess would be present for these things, so you’d naturally start to get closer and interact a lot more than you did before.
If you weren’t already crushing hard on Jess before the two of you got closer, you would definitely be crushing hard on him now. The two of you would discover that you actually have a lot in common (comedic tastes, music tastes, movie tastes, interests, whatever you think you’d have in common with him) and would start talking a lot more, calling each other on the phone pretty often and having long talks anytime you’re in the same room. This is also when Jess would start to really like you. It’s not that he didn’t find you attractive before or that he didn’t like you before, but he just hadn’t really noticed how funny and interesting you were because he wasn’t really friends with you at the time and didn’t have the opportunity to talk to you a lot. Once the two of you really become close friends, he’d start to develop feelings for you too. Maybe not super strong feelings just yet, but definitely romantic feelings of some kind. You still wouldn’t be nearly as close to him as you are to Bam, but you’d at least be a lot closer than you were before filming for CKY.
Speaking of Bam, I think Bam would be the only one who wouldn’t pick up on the fact that you and Jess like each other, even after you and Jess get closer. I think Phil would have always known, even before it became mutual, and April would have started to pick up on it after Jess started calling you and hanging out with you a lot more, and even the other guys (Dico, Rake, Raab, Bottaro, the whole crew) would have begun to notice how close the two of you were becoming after a while, but Bam just never seemed to notice it. If you were nervous and blushed a lot around Jess, Bam just assume it was because you were intimidated by how cool Jess is. If you commented on how attractive and funny Jess is, Bam would just tell you to stop kissing his ass. Even once you and Jess start hanging out a lot and talking more, Bam still doesn’t seem to realize that there’s something there between the two of you. He’s just happy that his best friend and his older brother get along because it means he can hang out with both of you at the same time. The thought that Jess could have romantic feelings for you and vice versa just doesn’t occur to Bam at all.
You and Jess would really start to appreciate each other more while filming the first CKY video. Jess would be impressed by your ability to do dangerous and/or disgusting things for the video, like running into brick walls at full speed and eating live insects, and you’d be impressed by how talented Jess is at drumming and by how good his band is as a whole. Part of the reason you and Jess end up getting so close is because of how much he admires you for the things you’re willing to do for the sake of footage and for how funny you are; he’d go out of his way to talk to you more just so he could hear you crack jokes and suggest ideas for future pranks and stunts and skits. In return, you’d go out of your way to talk to him so you could ask him about his band and about his music tastes.
Once you and Jess get closer, the two of you gradually start to develop sexual tension as it becomes more obvious that you like each other as more than friends. One of you will make an impulsive comment about how hot the other is and then frantically backtrack, Jess will find himself staring at you while you’re talking and admiring how you look when you’re excited about something, you’ll find yourself laughing wildly at any and every joke Jess makes like it’s the funniest thing you’ve ever heard, it’s almost ridiculous how many hints each of you unconsciously drop that reveal how attracted you are to each other. Again, Bam never notices any of it, but the rest of the guys certainly do, and they all undoubtedly tease you both about it pretty often. I think you and Jess would both sense it and would have slight suspicious that your feelings for each other are returned, but you’d both be too scared of being rejected to say it.
Eventually, something will happen to push your relationship with Jess from a vaguely tension-filled friendship to a full-on romantic relationship. It could be something as casual as you accidentally admitting to crushing on him while on the phone with him, or it could be something as elaborate as Dico, Raab and Rake locking you and Jess in a closet and forcing you to confess your feelings to each other because they’re sick of watching the two of you dance around the subject. Either way, finding out that your feelings for each other are mutual is a big relief for both of you, and it definitely gives Jess the push he needs to initiate a romantic relationship with you. I don’t think you’d immediately start an official relationship with him, or at least not openly. See, Bam may not realize the feelings that the two of you have for each other, but if he did, he’d be pissed, and you and Jess both know it. Bam’s a little possessive when it comes to his friends, and the idea of his older brother dating his best friend would definitely bring out his possessiveness and his childishness. So, for the first few months, you and Jess keep your relationship hidden from Bam.
Even though it’s a little stressful having to sneak around with Jess so Bam doesn’t find out, it’s also fun and at least a little thrilling. Jess sneaks you into his bedroom through the window at night and doesn’t tell Bam you’re there, the two of you call each other late at night to whisper and giggle about whatever pranks and skits you filmed that day, and he constantly sneaks kisses from you when Bam’s back is turned. There’s tons of raw camera footage of you and Jess being affectionate with each other when Bam’s not looking, usually as Raab and Dico and Rake laugh about it in the background, and while it’s a little dangerous (Bam would instantly flip his lid if he turned around and saw that), it’s also exciting as hell and makes it all the more special when you and Jess get to be alone and don’t have to hide your affection.
April and Phil would be so fucking happy that the two of you are together, and I’m not even exaggerating. Phil would be a little more calm about it, since he’s known about your feelings for Jess since day 1, but April would probably be ecstatic and the fact that you trusted her enough to tell her without being worried that she’d tell Bam makes her really happy. She thinks you’re perfect for Jess and would be really excited for the day when you and Jess can finally tell Bam and be open about your relationship, since in her mind that’ll be the day that Jess proposes (yes, she’d convinced that the two of you are gonna get married). She helps Jess sneak you in, makes up alibis and excuses for when the two of you hang out so Bam doesn’t get suspicious, and takes tons of photos and videos of the two of you being affectionate cuz she thinks it’s so cute. I can see her making the two of you a nice little scrapbook and gifting it to you after Bam finally finds out the two of you are together.
Speaking of which, we all know Bam has to find out eventually, so let’s get to how he acts when he finally does find out. First off, him finding out is 100% an accident. Up until that point, you and Jess would have been too worried about how Bam would react to even consider telling him, so him finding out would have to be because the two of you slipped up, not because you intentionally revealed it to him. He’d walk into Jess’s room without any warning while you were in there at 2am, or he’d overhear you giggling and flirting with Jess on the phone, or he’d turn around and see the two of you being affectionate behind his back, or he’d stumble upon April’s stash of cute photos of you and Jess. No matter how he finds out, his reaction would be instant: he’d throw a massive tantrum. Jumping around, yelling at both of you, angrily asking you what the fuck is going on, aggressively pointing his fingers at both of you, accusing Jess of stealing his best friend and accusing you of breaking the “friend code” (apparently Bam thinks there’s a code stating you’re not allowed to date your best friend’s brother), his totally freaking out and being in disbelief at the fact that the two of you have feelings for each other. Like I said, the thought that Jess and you could ever have non-platonic feelings for each other never occurred to him; Bam’s view of the world kind of revolves around his wants and needs, and you and Jess dating is not something he wanted or needed, so it never seemed like a possibility to him. You’re his best friend and Jess is his brother, and as far as he’s concerned, that’s all either of you should be to each other. Jess should only see you as Bam’s best friend, and you should only see Jess as Bam’s (less cool) older brother.
Once Bam finishes his little tantrum, he’d immediately leave the room in a dramatic fashion and go off to either the skatepark or his room. He’d blow off some steam and angrily rant to himself until he finally calmed down, and then he’d give you and Jess the silent treatment for however long he saw fit. It could be days, weeks, or even months. There’s no telling with Bam. After a while, though, I think it would finally dawn on him that his anger towards the two of you isn’t gonna change the fact that you and Jess are in love and aren’t breaking up anytime soon, even if it means Bam being mad at both of you for the rest of your lives. Obviously, Bam doesn’t want to lose his best friend or his brother, so eventually, he’d suck it up and accept it. He wouldn’t apologize for throwing a fit over it, but you wouldn’t expect him to do that anyway. Just the fact that he’s finally accepted it would be enough for you both.
Honestly, for as much as he initially went against it, I think Bam would eventually grow to really like you and Jess as a couple, even if he’d never admit it. You and Jess are actually really good together; you crack a lot of jokes together, you support each other through everything, and you don’t let your relationship have a negative effect on your friendships with the other guys. Sure, it’s not ideal that his best friend is dating his older brother, but it’s not as bad as he thought it would be, and it makes things more exciting. Your presence adds a lot to Jess’s endeavors (CKY’s music videos and tours), and Jess’s presence adds a lot to you and Bam’s endeavors (the CKY videos, Haggard, Jackass, and Viva La Bam). You and Jess are a fun couple, as much as Bam hates to admit it, and if anything, you’ve probably got an even stronger relationship with Bam now that he knows about you and Jess. In fact, you being with Jess probably ends up giving you a stronger relationship with all of the Margera’s as a whole.
Bonus: I think Jess would propose to you after like two or three years together, and I think he’d do it on stage during a concert. You’d be off to the side or watching from the front row, and then suddenly the spotlights would be on you and Jess would be getting up from his drums to get down on one knee and show you the ring he’s holding in his hand while his bandmates play something sweet like your favorite song or whatever song you and Jess like to dance to together. April would be sobbing in the front row, Phil would be grinning from ear to ear, and Bam would be the one holding the spotlight—later, you’d find out that he actually thought up the idea himself. Guess he came around after all!

Viva Las Vegas, Pt. 9 - A Case
Summary: Sunset Curve Alive AU, Willex, is it a lead?, 2k

Late the next morning, the guys stood with Julie’s family at the airport. Alex couldn’t believe that weeks of jamming together, writing music together, goofing around while Ray was filming, and dinners cooked by Julie’s aunt Victoria had all passed so quickly.
“It’s only another two months,” Julie was muttering to Luke, her eyes looking up into his with a special gentleness. Her hands gripped the top handle of her backpack with white knuckles.
“You’re gonna kill it out there,” Luke encouraged. The softness he applied was so different from what Alex usually saw, and he wasn’t looking forward to how miserable Luke was about to get in her absence. A painful thought told him it was probably similar to how he was at the moment, no matter how much he wanted to deny it. Having someone else reflect that wasn’t as nice as he thought it would be.
“Okay, kiddos, let’s get a photo!” Julie’s aunt was saying, shepherding them all together.
“Your mother asked me to take more pictures, so I’m taking all the pictures I can, sobrina,” Victoria came back.
“Tía,” Julie protested, rolling her eyes but smiling anyway.
Getting in formation, Alex positioned himself in the back by default, resting his arms on the shoulders of his bandmates while Julie, Flynn, and Carlos huddled together in front. After being uncomfortably squished into Reggie for a few seconds, he got blinded momentarily with the flash and was pretty sure he’d blinked. Then again, he was sure Bobby had been giving Reggie bunny ears, Luke was off balance, and Carlos had pulled a face, so it was likely that Flynn and Julie were the only ones who looked good in the photo.
“Ay, dios,” Victoria said afterward. “Your mamá is at least going to laugh a lot when she sees these.”
“I don’t know about the rest of y’all,” Flynn said, flipping her braids over her shoulder. “But I look amazing.”
Everyone chuckled and Ray picked up his carry-on.
“Alright, one last hug for everyone and then we’ve gotta board,” he said, pulling Carlos into his side. “You be good for your tía, alright?”
“Promise!” Carlos nodded with his typical grin.
Julie was already squished by Flynn and all the guys at once.
“Okay, before I get hugged to death,” she teased. They all let go of her. “I’ll miss you guys.”
“We’ll keep in touch, though, right?” Luke asked, his eyes wells of hope.
Julie looked up at him and smiled demurely.
“If you had a phone I could reach you with, then of course,” she told him.
“Yeah,” Luke muttered, pulling a Sharpie out of his back pocket. Alex smirked at seeing him be so prepared. Luke grabbed Julie’s hand and scribbled out a number, both chuckling lightly the whole time at how over the top he was being. “There, you’ve got my number.”
“Great,” Julie said with mixed awkwardness and amusement. “I’ll try not to wash my hands before I give you a call.” With that, she shouldered her bag and waved at them before joining Ray on the plane.
Bobby wrapped an arm around Luke’s shoulders and pivoted him so they could walk out of the terminal. Flynn and Victoria followed behind them while Carlos began running ahead of the boys.
“Don’t go too far, Carlos,” Victoria warned. “We don’t want to lose you.”
“You could still find me if you wanted!” he taunted, even though he made sure he remained in sight.
“He’s right,” Flynn smirked.
“Doesn’t matter,” Victoria said. “I’m taking a break while my sister needs support.”
Alex’s interest piqued at what he overheard.
“Wait, what do you mean?” he asked, pulling back from the rest of the group.
“I mean I’m putting my job on hold to help take care of my sister,” Victoria said, slightly confused at his question.
“Yeah, but what was your job?” he insisted, trying not to sound too intense about it.
“Oh,” she laughed. “I was on a team of investigators. We worked on missing person cases, mostly. But I’m taking a sabbatical.”
A mesh of things rushed into Alex’s mind and he wasn’t sure if he dared say them out loud. He had that strange feeling again, like he’d had when he first met Willie in the diner. That exhilaration.
“Can I ask you something?”
“Of course,” Victoria told him casually. “If you’re wondering about Luke, his case is through a completely different department, and I can’t do anything for or against him.”
“No, it isn’t,” he started. “What if there was evidence of a really old case? What would it take to pick it back up?”
She blinked at him.
“Well, if it’s a strong enough lead, then it would be worth looking into,” she said. “Why, do you think you know something?”
“No,” he said finally. “Well, it’s probably nothing, just a funny coincidence.”
Reggie’s words from last night echoed: sometimes a kid is just a random kid. Other arguments surfaced. There hadn’t been anything to tip him off that Willie had gone missing as a kid, it was just a poster with the same first name. Why did he get so excited about it? He gripped the strap on his fanny pack.
Victoria looked at him with mild concern.
“Okay,” she said. “Like what?”
Looking at the guys, Carlos, and Flynn in the distance, Alex breathed in nervously.
“I actually saw a poster for someone, and usually I don’t pay attention, but it matched the description of someone that I met a few weeks ago.”
“You mean, when you were in Las Vegas?”
He nodded.
“I would have to see the whole case, and reopening old ones takes a little more work. But if you truly think you know something, Alex, this is a very serious matter and I would need as much information as you could give.” She looked at him firmly.
Alex was caught on all the thoughts swirling in his mind as they entered the parking garage. He felt himself begin shaking. Maybe he was jumping the gun?
“Well, like you said, you’re taking a sabbatical. And I’m still thinking it’s a coincidence, so, I’d hate to take your focus away from Rose.”
Victoria smiled politely, although her eyes didn’t reflect it.
“Well, I appreciate that,” she told him as she made towards where Carlos and Flynn were already waiting at her car. “If you change your mind, just let me know.”
A car horn from somewhere else was heard and Alex saw the guys all waving at him to join them in the van. Taking in a deep breath, he nodded to Victoria and ran over to join his bandmates.
“Dude, what are you doing talking to Julie’s aunt?” Luke wondered.
“Nothing,” Alex responded. “She just has a cool job and I wanted to know about it.”
“You know who else has a cool job, Alex?” Luke asked. “We do. We have the coolest job. Don’t get distracted.”
Alex buckled himself in as Bobby pulled out of the garage.
“I’m not, I swear!”
Reggie just patted him on the back with his goofy smile. Alex rolled his eyes, knowing the guys meant well. He could feel that all of them were trying to be normal around him, so he couldn’t blame them for their efforts. He knew he hadn’t been as easy to deal with lately. It wasn’t anything major, but something had gotten him acting more closed off from them, and he was balancing letting the guys be aware of it and trying not to burden them with it at the same time. Maybe that’s why he wanted to connect Willie to the missing kid. It probably had made him think he could get closure after everything that had happened on the trip. He didn’t want to accept the saying ‘what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas.’
He couldn’t focus on that now, though. They had a few small gigs lined up and needed to get practicing. Opening for Julie had broadened their fanbase a little and things were going to change. Alex already didn’t handle change well. If he remained focused on something else, it was only going to make matters worse.
Later that night, they were just wrapping up practice in the garage. Bobby had popped a string on his guitar and ran into the house to grab a replacement.
“Alex, you were killing it, man!” Reggie was saying.
“Nah, I was just keeping it steady,” Alex shrugged.
“Seriously!” Reggie insisted. “You’re like the Energizer bunny! You know, always in pink, keeps us going, banging the drums - ”
“You should never make that comparison again,” Alex said, holding a hand up. “But alright, I was smoking, I’ll admit it.”
“Yeah,” Luke joined in. “Keep playing like that and you’ll be the next Neil Peart.”
Bobby reentered the garage.
“Hey, Alex,” he said. “You’ve got a phone call.”
All the guys, including Alex, looked confused.
“Okay...guess I’ll go get that,” he said, heading into Bobby’s house.
Finding the phone attached to the wall outside the kitchen, Alex picked up the receiver.
“Hello?”
“Alex, it’s Victoria, Julie’s aunt,” he heard on the other line.
“Hi,” he answered, even more confused than before. “How did you know I would be here?”
“The number your friend gave my niece. She said that’s where you kids like to practice. I guess I called at the right time!”
He simply nodded in response, even though she couldn’t see it.
“Anyway, I wanted to know more about this person you saw.”
“Oh, okay.” He tried to remember as many details as he could while he gave them to her. He was pretty sure he could even remember the address for the hotel. Victoria just said ‘mmhmm’ in between everything, like she was writing it all down. It got Alex sort of excited, even though he remained bewildered that she was asking him for all of this information.
“Okay,” Victoria sighed after a few minutes. “I need to ask a favor of you boys.”
“Yeah, anything,” Alex said.
“Look after Carlos for a couple days? I can pay each of you.”
“Uh,” he blinked in surprise. “Yeah, cool, we can do that.”
“Perfect! And Alex, muchas gracias.”
“It’s nothing,” he said, glad to recognize at least one phrase in Spanish. “Thanks for calling.”
“No problem, kiddo. Ba-bye.” She hung up before him.
Alex slowly put the receiver back in place as he stood there processing. What had he just involved himself in? Julie’s aunt hadn’t exactly explained why she suddenly wanted to know everything about Willie. As he went back into the garage, he tried to calm his nerves.
“Well, who was it?” Luke asked as they all sat around waiting.
“Julie’s aunt,” Alex told them. “She wants us to watch Carlos for a couple of days.”
“Aw, yeah!” Reggie exclaimed, pumping his fists excitedly.
“Why didn’t she just tell me, then?” Bobby wondered.
“Because she wanted to finish the conversation that you guys so rudely interrupted before,” Alex said, only half-joking.
Luke and Bobby shared a puzzled look, but let it slide.
“Did you tell her we have a gig in a couple days?” Luke asked.
Alex’s eyes widened.
“Oh, no, I forgot,” he said.
“He can just be our VIP,” Reggie stated, clearly unbothered about it.
“That works,” Alex said, gesturing to Reggie.
A cold realization hit him and he clenched his fist. He’d forgotten to mention more than their gig to Victoria: he also hadn’t told her about Willie’s amnesia.
Victoria looked down at the picture in her hand. It was familiar, since she had worked on that case when it first opened. One of the few that had gone unsolved in her department for a long time. She sincerely hoped she wasn’t about to make a mistake.
“So, where are you going?” Carlos asked as he chewed a mouthful of fries. They were sitting beside the wall of posters on the pier.
“I’m just checking on something,” she said vaguely. “If you want, I can bring back something for you.”
“A million dollars?”
She chuckled. “Unfortunately, I don’t think so.”
“Are you gonna be solving a case?” he queried.
Looking at the picture again, Victoria sighed and gave him a sympathetic smile. She knew he would want to help.
“I’m not sure, bendición,” she said. “But maybe.”
Checking the address she had written down and the map once again, Victoria stepped out of her car and into the hotel lobby. No one was at the front desk, so she rang the bell on the counter. A young man with dark curly hair appeared.
“Welcome to the Desert Oasis, how can I assist you?” he said cooly, and she recognized his Brazilian accent.
“Hi, I made a call this morning for a reservation? For a Victoria Mo- ”
“Ah, yes, I remember your call,” he interrupted. He looked up the room in his records and pulled out a key. “Your room will be on the second floor and then all the way down the hall to your right. Have a wonderful stay.”
“Thank you,” she said, taking the key, grabbing her one bag and heading up as fast as she could.
Hermana mía, por favor me perdones, she prayed silently in the elevator. If she was going to solve one case while she was supposed to be on sabbatical, it would be this one. She remembered searching high and low for this boy eight years ago and the devastation then. Rose would surely understand this, right? Victoria knew that if their positions were swapped, Rose wouldn’t be able to help doing something similar to help the people around her. It was just a family trait, she figured.
Getting situated inside the room, she pulled out the poster she’d pulled off the wall from the pier at Santa Monica and laid it on the table. Alex had called him Willie. She hoped they were the same.

Cool mundane pictures?
I’m not sure I understand what you’re asking, but I’m going to take a wild guess and take this opportunity to show you some pictures of walls.
I had the chance to visit Urbino this past summer. It is a small but beautiful city in the central part of Italy, not far from the Adriatic Sea. It may be known for being Raffaello Sanzio’s - the painter - hometown, for the delicious crescia, and for the Ducal Palace. Yep, its walls are the ones you’re about to see.
Palazzo Ducale was built in the XV century to represent duke Federico da Montefeltro’s central role as a Renaissance man of power, of culture, and of military skill. The palace was inhabited by all sorts of people through the centuries: the duke’s family and entourage and guests, but also, for example, the Papal legate (XVII century), servants, various statesmen, and even prisoners (up to the late XIX century). And they left tangible traces of their passing.
Now. Writing on walls is severely frowned upon today, but in the past it wasn’t considered as bad. Perhaps you know of young Lord Byron’s signature on a temple column at Cape Sounion, in Greece. Perhaps you have, like I did, a vague idea of bored WWII soldiers counting days and carving their names on the bricks of some lone bell tower where they stood guard.
But.
Maybe you don’t fully realize - and I didn’t, either! - how insistent and pervasive this graphomania-like tendency of the past could be. After first noticing them in Urbino, I started seeing these traces everywhere I went that preserved ancient buildings or walls or frescoes or… you get it. Everywhere.
And how tender, how understandable, how full of life they are! The need to leave a mark, to be remembered, and defy time (“exegi monumentum aere perennius”…) is terribly, wonderfully human.
So here you go. The coolest and most mundane of pictures.

Masqueraders outside: LALALALA IT’S CARNIVAL THE BEST TIME OF THE YEAR
(Balducci comes back and sees Teresa at the window)
Balducci: TERESA WHAT DID I TELL YOU ABOUT STAYING AWAY FROM THE WINDOW what is even going on down there? I bet it’s that Cellini whipping everyone into a frenzy. Ugh, Carnival. (exits again)
Teresa: (goes to the window and is immediately showered with flowers) I don’t care what my dad says, hanging out by the window is fun. I love flowers. Oh hey, a note from Cellini! What? He’s coming here? Oh, that’ll be risky. But hey, dad’s out of the house, what could go wrong? Y’know, it’s kinda hard, dealing with all this—feeling like I have to listen to my dad, but wanting to indulge in the affections of my beloved. When I’m older, old like my parents, maybe I’ll be responsible, but right now I’m young, and I deserve to have some fun! Girls just wanna have fun!
Cellini: (appearing at the window) TERESA MY BELOVED
Teresa: Cellini, I love you, but it’s too dangerous for you to be here. What if my dad catches us?
Cellini: But look, it’s carnival, and it’s so gay! And I mean that like happy, but y’know, it’s pretty gay too. Besides, I love you. Why do you turn me away?
Teresa: Well, I just got done singing this empowering feminist aria, but unfortunately reality hits and I remember that it’s 1532 and I basically have no rights, so it’s best for you to forget me and move on.
Fieramosca: (sneaking in carrying a huge bouquet) The best way to a woman’s heart is with a cool sneak-in plan and a bunch of flowers. Hang on, is that Cellini talking to my Teresa?
Cellini: How am I supposed to just leave you behind? Let you be forced into the arms of that Fieramosca?
Teresa: I’d rather die than marry Fieramosca!
Fieramosca: …I just came here to have a good time and I’m honestly feeling so attacked right now.
Cellini: Okay, so, how about this: Come to the new opera Cassandro is presenting tomorrow night. While your dad is distracted, my apprentice and I will sneak over disguised as friars and spirit you away! We’ll go to Florence and live happily ever after! Nothing could possibly go wrong!
Fieramosca: Hmm, interesting plan. It would be a shame if someone were to...interfere.
Teresa: Sounds foolproof. But hang on, my dad is coming back. You have to hide!
(Cellini hides behind the door. Fieramosca hides in Teresa’s bedroom. Balducci somes back.)
Balducci: Teresa, what are you up to? Are you talking to people? How many times do I have to remind you that you’re not allowed to have a life?
Teresa: (distracting him so Cellini can sneak out) DAD THERE’S A MAN IN MY BEDROOM
Balducci: What??? Let me see!
(Balducci goes into Teresa's bedroom and comes out dragging Fieramosca) I can’t believe this! This is so inappropriate, Fieramosca, how dare you?
Fieramosca: No, wait, let me explain! I just came to visit! Cellini is the real rascal!
Teresa: Oh the poor man is raving mad.
Balducci: I will not stand for this! Servants, come here! Let’s teach this seducer a lesson!
Servants: OH YEAAAHHHHH LET’S STICK HIM IN THE FOUNTAIN

Ascanio: (enters carrying a bag of money) ASCANIO TO THE RESCUE
Everybody: YEAHHH VIVA ASCANIO
Ascanio: Okay hold your horses folks, before you spend this money, you have to realize where it’s coming from. It’s a down payment on that statue you’re supposed to build. Cellini, remember you promised the Pope you’d make that statue?
Cellini: Ugh, don’t remind me.
Ascanio: It’s literally my job to remind you.
Cellini: Fiiiiine I promise I’ll finish the statue.
Ascanio: Okay, cool. Here’s the money.
Cellini: Here you go, you troublesome little man, now give us our drinks.
(He gives the Innkeeper the money.)
Cellini: Okay, now that we all have had our libations, let’s talk revenge. You know that guy Balducci who’s always disrespecting me and trying to keep me away from my girlfriend? Well, I have a plan for Carnival where we can humiliate him in front of everyone as payback!
Everyone else: Sounds like a great time! We’re in.
Everyone: Yeah!! A curse on that guy! And while you’re at it, honor to the metal-workers again!!
Ascanio: That’s such a bop where’d it come from?
Cellini: We made it up while you were gone.
Ascanio: I always miss the fun stuff.
(they all leave to get ready; Fieramosca, who was eavesdropping, comes out into the open)
Fieramosca: Ugh, look at them all, plotting against my future!
Pompeo: (entering) Hey boo! What's with the long face?
Fieramosca: Alas, Pompeo, my only friend! What a week it's been! First off, I got an impromptu and very much unwanted bath at Balducci’s yesterday. And as if that weren’t enough, now Cellini and his apprentice are going to abduct my girl!
Pompeo: That’s actually not a bad idea.
Fieramosca: What do you mean?? You want him to steal Teresa from me?
Pompeo: No, the getting in disguise and abducting her part! Why don’t WE just don those same disguises and get her ourselves?
Fieramosca: Ohhh, I get it! What a great idea! Although I must admit, I am a little scared of what Cellini might do if he catches me in the act.
Pompeo: What you think he’s actually going to stab somebody? Here, let’s practice sword fighting so you’re prepared if he does try to pull anything funny.
Fieramosca: Good idea! (they practice sword fighting) HA LOOK AT ME, WHO WOULD EVER DARE CHALLENGE ME, ALL Y’ALL PEASANTS GET OUT OF MY WAY, I’M THE ROUGHEST TOUGHEST GUY YOU EVER DID SEE. Oh, Teresa, I wish you could know just how much my heart burns for you! I’ll be damned if I let that rascal Cellini come between us.
(They leave to get ready. Balducci enters with Teresa as the Piazza begins to fill with people)
Balducci: Well, Teresa, I hope you’re happy. I’ve decided to suffer through this vulgar comedy so you can stop nagging me about not letting you go to Carnival.
Teresa: I’ll never forget your sacrifice, dad. (Come to think, it DOES make me feel a little guilty to be running away from home...is it fair to leave him all by himself?)
Cellini and Ascanio: (dressed as monks) Quickly and quietly, let’s get down to business! The plot is about to start!
Chorus or Troupers: COME, GOOD PEOPLE OF ROME!! COME AND SEE OUR SHOW!!
People: THIS IS SO MUCH FUN CARNIVAL IS AWESOME
Troupers: Let the show begin! (They start a pantomime featuring a parody of Balducci and the Pope)

Fieramosca: ...are you telling me this is the second time in as many days I’m being accused of something that Cellini did?

Cellini’s workshop
Teresa: Oh my gosh what a catastrophe! I hope Cellini is okay!
Ascanio: Have faith! My master is not one to let a silly little murder accusation get him down. I mean, he did actually kill the guy, but I’m sure it will all work itself out. Have faith!
Teresa: Let’s pray for his safe return! (She and Ascanio sing a very pretty prayer; Cellini busts into the workshop)
Cellini: HONEY I’M HOME
Teresa and Ascanio: OMG YAYY YOU’RE ALIVE
Cellini: It was a close call! Everyone was running after me with daggers and calling out for my blood! I thought for sure I was done for, but I managed to evade the crowd and find a place to hide, but passed clean out in the process. It was just my fortune that as I came to my senses, as group of white monks were walking past! I joined their procession and no one was the wiser. God led them right to you!
Teresa: OMG that’s such a harrowing adventure! I’ve got goosebumps.
Ascanio: And you’re sure this is 100% accurate, with no embellishments?
Cellini: What do you take me for? Now, come on, we’ve got to get out of here before they come after us again.
Ascanio: Whoops, they’re already here.
Balducci: Cellini, you scoundrel, abductor, murderer, and general all-around-annoying person! Relinquish my daughter. It’s time for her to unite with her husband, Fieramosca.
Cellini: OVER MY DEAD BODY
Ascanio: Don’t give them any ideas!
Balducci: Come on, Fieramosca, claim your bride!
Teresa: DAD NOOOOO
Fieramosca: Uh...I don’t want to cause a scene…
(The Pope enters with his retinue)
Everybody: OH SHI--OH DEAR IT’S THE POPE
Pope: Rise, rise, my children! Relish in my holiness, but don’t hurt yourselves.
Balducci and Fieramosca: Oh your Holiness, please grant us your assistance! That rascal Cellini has tarnished Teresa’s honor.
Cellini: Come on, I think that’s a bit of an exaggeration.
Pope: Well well, well, Cellini, this isn’t the first time you’ve gotten in trouble with me, is it? For example, where’s my statue? The one I commissioned you to make?
Cellini: Well...it’s not quite done yet.
Pope: Are you saying I should find someone else to cast the statue instead?
Cellini: WHAT?? HOW DARE YOU!! SOMEONE ELSE CAST M STATUE?? I’D RATHER DIE THAN SEE SOME AMETURE DARE TO PUT THEIR GRUBBY LITTLE FINGERS ON MY MASTERWORK
Everyone else: Are you seriously yelling at the Pope????
Pope: Arrest this man!
Cellini: YOU ARREST ME AND I WILL DESTROY THIS MODEL RIGHT HERE THEN NO ONE WILL BE ABLE TO FINISH THE STATUE! NOBODY!! NOBODY!!
Pope: How dare you threaten me? What’s it going to take to calm you down?
Cellini: I want full forgiveness for all my crimes up till this point. Wipe my record clean.
Pope: Fine, fine.
Cellini: ALSO I want Teresa.
Balducci and Fieramosca: WHAT??? Your Holiness can’t possibly be considering this.
Cellini: I ALSO want more time to finish the statue.
Pope: …you know my weakness for art; fine, fine, I can’t really say no.
Balducci and Fieramosca: What audacity! But we’ll see who has the last laugh.
Teresa: Oh, what a fateful day!
Ascanio: Look at my master, he’s so clever and devious!
Pope: Okay, Cellini, here’s the deal. Finish the statue by tomorrow, and you’ll get all that you asked for. If you can’t finish it in time, you’ll be hanged.
Cellini: Fine!
Balducci and Fieramosca: He’s on the brink of ruin! We’ll see who wins this one!
Teresa: He’s doomed, alas! There’s nothing left for me in this world! Luckily I'm not going to end my life based on this notion like most operatic heroines, but I still feel dread in my heart!
Cellini: I’ve got to win this!

Ascanio: TRALALALALALA….idk what I’m feeling...I’m happy, then I’m sad, then I’m crying, then I’m laughing, then I’m singing! Must be the hormones. Or the stress...our little bronze boy is finally getting finished today! But there’s a lot on the line. On one hand, I’m all scared that we’ll fail and my poor master will be hanged; on the other hand I can’t help laughing over how ridiculous the whole situation is...I mean, did you SEE the way my master stood up to the Pope?? Anyway, I better start getting ready. Tralalala! (He exits)
Cellini: What have I gotten myself into? How did I expect to finish this statue on time? All of Rome has its eyes on me
Ascanio: *Hamilton chorus voice* history has its eyes on youuuu
Cellini: What?
Ascanio: Nothing. I’m not here.
Cellini: Ah, why can’t I be a simple shepherd, whiling my life peacefully away in the mountains?
Chorus outside: Oooh!! here’s a grim old sea shanty
Cellini: I wish they’d stop! Nothing good ever happens when they sing that song!
Ascanio: (coming back) Not that song again!

Balducci: Teresa! What are you doing here?
Teresa: Uh, funny story.
Pope: So, Cellini, is my statue done yet?
Cellini: Nope, but it will be very soon.
Balducci: We’ll see about that.
Pope: You better be right.
Fieramosca: (running in) We need more metal for the statue!
Cellini: What, are you messing up my statue?? Let me go see (he runs to the forge)
Balducci: Fieramosca? What are you doing wearing an apron?
Fieramosca: Would you believe me if I said I got a new job?
Cellini: (coming back) Haha nothing to see here! Everything is going according to plan! We just need a bit more metal, that’s all, no biggie.
Workers: Just one problem: There is no more metal. And the fire’s going out. If we don’t get more metal in there quick, the whole thing will be ruined!
Balducci: Well, well, well, looks like I’m winning!
Cellini: NO THIS IS NOT THE END I REFUSE TO GIVE UP! Everyone, just grab anything metal and throw it in there!
Workers: What?? Even all your old work?
Cellini: I SAID EVERYTHING DIDN’T I
(Cellini, the workers, and Ascanio all start grabbing metal things and throwing them into the furnace)
Teresa: I can’t handle this stress!!
Pope: I can’t believe the nerve of this guy! Is it possible he could actually succeed?
(An explosion comes from the forge)
Cellini: OMG THIS IS IT I’M DONE FOR
Workers: WOOHOO WE DID IT LONG LIVE CELLINI
Cellini: We did it??

What a great question. I’ve been thinking about compiling all the songs that I listened to while writing, and its true -- there are a few fics of mine that had one or two songs that were on on a loop while I was writing -- and this is the perfect opportunity!
Not every fic of mine has one (or two or three as the case may be), but some fics were definitely colored by the song or songs that got me in the mood to write.

Coldplay for NME: “This is our period of having no fear”
Inspired by space, hard rock and, erm, emojis, Chris and co.’s ninth album ‘Music Of The Spheres’ is the sound of a band fearlessly entering a whole new orbit.
You can be Chris Martin, the lead singer of Coldplay, the 21st century’s biggest band, and still be keen to learn a thing or two. You can walk into any stadium or arena on this planet, light the place up with multi-coloured wristbands while thrilling hundreds of thousands of people, and still think you’ve not quite nailed the move as a frontman. That, it seems, is about to change.
“I’ve always wanted to do a move called the ‘Till Hammer’, he tells NME, referring to Rammstein’s frontman Till Lindermann’s trademark trick, usually reserved for their punishing performance of ‘Du Hast’. “It’s where you go like this…” he says, leaping up from the bench we’re sat on in a central London park into a surf stance, slightly side-on; his feet rock back and forth, the head starts swinging and the hammer – a clenched fist – comes down against his right thigh in time to an imaginary guitar riff. Consider this ‘Martin’s Mallet’.
We’re discussing ‘People Of The Pride’, one of the highlights of Coldplay’s ninth album ‘Music Of The Spheres’, out today (October 15). The song opens with a bone-crunching guitar riff – the band collectively cite Muse, Depeche Mode and Rammstein as inspirations – as it segues between serene, spacey chords and plenty of opportunities to let the hammer drop. “That’s our Rammstein cover that isn’t actually a cover,” Martin laughs.
For years, that song had been their Moby Dick. The opening verse, which references a man “who swears he’s God” and “walks around like he owns the fucking lot”, was written in the ‘Viva La Vida’-era back in 2008, and until now only existed as a brooding piano-led demo. They struggled for years to nail it, but they were inspired last year to finish the song and speak of the people “sewing up of rags into revolution flags” who want “to be free to fall in love with who we want”.
“A lot of it came from the Black Lives Matter and Gay Pride marches where people using their voice to say ‘this situation is ridiculous’, so I think it’s our ‘This situation is ridiculous’ song,” Martin says. “We’re quite polite about it, though, as opposed to saying, ‘You fucking arseholes!’ But this is about human politics. This is the politics that believes that everyone on the planet has a right to be themselves. And I think whether you’re an old soft-rock superstar, or a young whippersnapper, you’re allowed to believe that.”
A few days later, we see the move in action at Coldplay’s intimate show at London’s Shepherd’s Bush Empire as blows rain down during the song’s monstrous opening. It’s typical of the experience of listening to their buoyant record ‘Music Of The Spheres’, where playful pop magic meets earnest human politics; after two decades together, few bands, if any, are able to combine the two and do it with such ease and joy.
“This album is our period of having no rules or fear about what people think or say about us,” Martin says. “We’ve already had all the good and bad reviews in the world and if we worry about the response, it makes you a little more cautious. There’s a part of you that has to accept that we’re an older band, we were never the new ‘cool young thing’… but in a strange way it’s quite liberating. There’s no pressure on us, we just get to do what we love.”
Martin’s response to those questioning the use of emojis for song titles (three of the tracks are ‘🪐’, ‘✨’ and ‘❤️’) is fitting for this era: “Well, why not? That’s our whole attitude to everything.”
We last found the band at a delightfully experimental juncture. 2019’s ‘Everyday Life’ served as a subtle riposte – though the band don’t seem to give a shit – to those who miss ‘Oldplay’ and the turn-of-the-century indie-rock they brought to ‘Parachutes’ (2000) and ‘A Rush Of Blood Of The Head’ (2002). Instead, there were sprawling compositions and collaborations with Femi and Made Kuti (son and grandson of Afrobeats pioneer, Fela) and Palestinian oud group, Le Trio Joubran. The NME review proclaimed it proof that “Coldplay are more adventurous than they’re often given credit for”, and described its stunning performance at the Citadel in Amman, Jordan as an “audacious undertaking”.The project was bolstered by the pattern they’ve slipped into: for every day-glo pop bonanza record, there’s been a mellower response album. Following their sparkling fifth album ‘Mylo Xyloto’ (2011), came the gloomy ‘Ghost Stories’ (2014); after ‘A Head Full of Dreams’ (2016), they burrowed down for ‘Everyday Life’. Guitarist Jonny Buckland explains: “Knowing that the big one is coming allows us to go a lot smaller and to not worry about that; we can be much more insular about what music we make sense.”
This album – the big one – is one they had an inkling would be next for years; in fact, as bassist Guy Berryman mentions on Zoom the day prior, the band often have a title and concept in mind before the music arrives. “It’s just a device to provide a framework into which we can work thematically,” he says. “The name ‘Music Of The Spheres’ has been something we’ve been talking about for many years now.”
So, for the uninitiated, what is ‘Music Of The Spheres’, then?
“It’s a set of songs located in a distant galaxy… that we made up,” Martin says, with a glint in his eye, clearly aware at how daft the whole thing can be if you take it too seriously. “It’s where we can be totally free from any pressure of what we’ve done before and how we should sound. That freedom of location allows us to speak about what it means to be human. It seems a bit sci-fi and everything, but really it’s a bunch of love songs. It’s not even really set in space. It could all be set in Margate too; it just depends what the music videos and artworks look like – we could have dancing fish and chips salesmen instead…”
It’s typical of the high-concept, sweeping visions that Martin and the rest of the band are prone to: ‘Mylo Xyloto’, after all, was a rock opera in which an ‘Orwellian’ dictatorship waged a war on sound and colour. But once you’ve conquered planet Earth the way Coldplay have – including four Glastonbury Festival headline sets and bagged eight consecutive UK Number One albums – then dreaming big, or at least appearing to do so, is par for the course.
And ‘Music Of The Spheres’ provides a palette for some moments of sheer brilliance; there’s the tubthumping ‘People Of The Pride’, ’80s excess on charming ‘Humankind’ and the album’s sublime, 10-minute closer ‘Coloratura’, their biggest musical flex in years. Contributions come from pop heavyweight Selena Gomez (‘Let Somebody Go’), as well as US R&B duo We Are King and Jacob Collier (‘Human Heart’), alongside scene-setting instrumentals and interludes.
The record’s clear vision, the band say, was realised by producer Max Martin (who’s worked with The Weeknd and Taylor Swift), who Berryman describes “as such a brilliant captain. I think we knew it’d always be this bigger sound, but when Max agreed to work with us, it was like, ‘Let’s really go for it; let’s have no limitations’.”
This openness led the band to work with pop titans, BTS, who appear on the collaborative single ‘My Universe’, where Martin and the group trade lines and flit between Korean and English for the band’s most charming – and likely soon-to-be – biggest collaboration yet.
“They’ve got such amazing energy,” Berryman says. “We hung out with them recently in New York, and even though there’s a bit of a language barrier, it didn’t feel awkward or uncomfortable at all. When a situation like that arises, the easiest thing can be to say ‘no’ to a collaboration like that because they’re different, or they’re from a different genre or a different country. There’s so many historical situations where that collaboration wouldn’t have happened.
Drummer Will Champion agrees: “This notion that change is a bad thing is crazy – we want to grow and embrace music and culture from all over the world. That’s the spirit of this album, trying to get rid of all those barriers we put up between us and other people.”
Connectivity is the prevailing theme of this album, both emotionally, physically and spiritually. It’s most evident on ‘Higher Power’, where Martin is “down on my knees”, reaching out and upwards on a “heavenly phone”. He recently described himself as having a “really hard time”, and is considering the role his evangelical childhood had on him. Have things improved?
“That was just a questioning time of life that I’m in, but yeah – it’s OK,” he says today. “It turns out I’m a completely normal human being with some stuff to sort out. There are things that when I get older that I can’t keep thinking that anymore or doing that anymore. It’s just about growing up. And lots of people in our job have been able to grow up and ignore dealing with certain stuff because you’re doing OK or you’re famous, and then you get to a certain point and you realise that’s not the answer to every question. I’m just trying to improve my life and where I can improve.”
And was that lockdown-inspired? Martin had previously said that his ego had taken a big check as a result of his being still for once.
“The adrenaline of touring or being all this everyday can be amazing,” Martin says, “but it can sometimes be a distraction; if this was all taken away, who are you? How are you being useful? It’s OK, I think that’s why we’re here on earth to figure out what we need to figure out.”
Next year, the band head out on their first full run of shows in over five years, with three dates slated for London’s Wembley Stadium in August. A return to Glastonbury Festival isn’t a part of it (says Martin: “Glastonbury is our spiritual home, but even your parents say you need to leave home sometimes”) but it’s a seismic event for different reasons. Back in 2019, they said that they wouldn’t be touring ‘Everyday Life’ due to the impact on the environment of large-scale tours like their own. They’ve spent the period taking influence from artists like Massive Attack and Billie Eilish, who’ve been leading the way in making live music safer for the environment.“I think we’ve made a great start at the moment,” explains Berryman. “Whatever we end up doing, will be a Phase One, but there always has to be an improvement and a continual cycle. If you want to pick holes, and I’m sure someone can and will, I think that’s fine: what you have to do is embrace the idea of continued progress. It has to be an ever-evolving situation.”
Martin adds: “The reason that we did the BMW commercial [the car manufacturer recently used ‘Higher Power’ for their range of electric vehicles] was because they are giving us these batteries for the show that we can power with left-over restaurant oil and solar power. We also have this kinetic flooring in the front section of the audience, so when they move up and down the audience will create power. It’s a long way to go, but we want to get on with what we can do.”
The band are already considering their next challenge. Champion says that they’ll probably celebrate the release of ‘Music Of The Spheres’ by “working on the new music”; Martin is similarly coy about what Vol.2 in the ‘Music Of The Spheres’ series sounds like, but he’s sure of one thing: “We’re going to make 12 albums. Because it’s a lot to pour everything into making them. I love it and it’s amazing, but it’s very intense too. I feel like because I know that challenge is finite, making this music doesn’t feel difficult, it feels like, ‘This is what we’re supposed to be doing’.”
Wait, what? You think it’s three more Coldplay albums and then out?
“I don’t think that’s what we’ll do,” he replies. “I know that’s what we’ll do in terms of studio albums.”
Crikey. Well, what’s left to achieve between now and the end, then? Going to try and squeeze in a Bond theme, perhaps?
“We kept trying to write one for 20 years, but never submitted them,” Martin laughs. “We have Bond themes for about five movies, but they’re not very good, to be honest. Also I don’t know if we’re spiritually on the same trip as James. As much as I like the films, I don’t know if us singing would do it for him. He’d be like, ‘That’s not what I’m into at all, fellas. I like guns and shit. All this hippie stuff just isn’t going to work’.”
They instead love what Billie and her brother, Finneas, did with ‘No Time To Die’, their eponymous theme for the recent 25th Bond movie, and enjoyed a recent collaboration at the Global Citizen concert in New York last month, where the sibling duo nailed ‘Fix You’’s second verse. Finneas enthusiastically told NME that the experience was “surreal”.
“It was equally wonderful singing with them,” says Chris. “I mean, [Finneas and Billie] wrote ‘Ocean Eyes’. I know when a song is great when my body goes into absolute furious jealousy for a minute – when I heard that song, I was like, ‘You fucking bastards’. But then I have to go ‘this is really inspiring’ and it becomes fandom; I love how much of a bond those two have.”
If we are, indeed, hurtling along the final stretch of Coldplay’s recording career, then ‘Music Of The Spheres’ is a fine one to usher it in. They’ve found an ample middle ground of everything that makes the band tick: stadium anthems, pop megahits and space-rock epics are nestled into deeper experimentation, and even some of your favourite emojis. As Martin shrugs: “We’ve got nothing to lose at this point.”

Amant retrouvé(My yandere game concept)
I have this idea for a yandere type game. I don’t wish for any drama it’s just an idea but I do hope to make it, by just trying out coding
Mostly everything said here might not be used if I make it. But you know
Amant retrouvé is about a girl named Felicity Menrow falling in love with a boy/girl and doing anything to be with them
(game in a nutshell. Full story concept and more below)
Story:
A sweet, outgoing girl by the name of Felicity Menrow starts her 11th year of school. She attends a private preparatory school in Lyon, France that her parents sent her from America to get a better education
Her childhood was pretty normal and she was raised to do the right thing
Week 1
She walks in the school and finds herself looking everywhere, she spaced out when a boy/girl by the name of Harvey/Harriett Uroso talks to her and Felicity falls in love with them, without hesitation, she starts talking to them and quickly befriends them
They introduces her to their friend group. In this friend group, there is two boys and two females. She learns that one of the guys by the name of Iven Davis has a crush on the leader(aka Harvey/Harriett)and plans to confess them on Thursday
Felicity goes to her complex apartment feeling a bit upset trying to think about anything, she gets stopped by a male(his name is Afflictus Tartal) who has a deal for her. If she's able to get him pictures of the inside of the school then he'll provide her things she needs, out of desperation, she agrees
When she finally gets to her complex, she meets a girl by the name of Suzanne Tartal and they start to chat. Felicity tells her about her situation and Suzanne suggest murder as a way, she shows Felicity the ins and outs of murder and how to get away with it
(Suzanne is a second source. She’ll replace Afflictus if you go killing)
Felicity goes to bed knowing what she needed to do the next day
Week 2
If she's able to get rid of him, then it will move to a 10th year student by the name of Louise Hill who meets Harvey/Harriett when they try to find their classroom. She falls in love and wants to confess, she meets Felicity and quickly wishes to become friends
Week 3
If she is eliminated then it will move to a girl by the name of Iva Woods. She meets Harvey/Harriett when she accidentally spilled her water on them, she falls in love and tries to repair their relationship, Harvey/Harriett invites them to hang in the group which gives her the chance of meeting people that their close to
Week 4
If she's eliminated then Felicity meets another student whose name is Vale Fisher who has grown a crush on her. She meets him on Sunday during the town's hearts festival when he brings her a box of chocolate, he says that he things she's cute and would like to hang with her
Week 5
After that, another guy(Fleecer Hicks) grows a crush on Harvey/Harriett and starts to hang around them protecting them from other students. Harvey/Harriett try to make him a better person by spending their time with him which in turn makes them fall in love. He hangs in a group that is only female and each one is like a bodyguard
Week 6
After that, a transfer student named Yvonne Keller meets Harvey/Harriett and gets annoyed at them for ruining their dance and wants to ruin their reputation as a revenge
Week 7
If he's taken care of. Felicity meets up with Afflictus to talk, she asks why he needs the photos of the school. He answered that his ex wife, Alison Bell, is the principal of the school and he used to work there and misses it. He asks if Felicity would try to get his wife to take him back
The next week, the principal will be around the halls watching the students. Felicity will be able to talk to her about certain topics before talking about her ex, she then will say that he cheated on him with the fired nurse
The students tells Afflictus about what Alison said, he'll go to the school and say that the nurse forced herself onto him
Alison won't believe it but either she'll allow him the job seeing him in the destruct state or kick him out depending if Felicity was able to convince her enough
After that moment, Afflictus will easily be at the school and be Felicity's new teacher
But if she's unsuccessful, then he'll still be use trough the alleyway of the school(aka his home)
But if you choose killing, then this week will be a regular week, a free week if you may, since Afflictus won’t talk to you knowing you’re a killer
Week 8
For the next week. Harvey/Harriet won't be attending the first 3 days because of personal problems but Felicity will be able to talk with them viva a phone mini game where you click a sentence to respond to them. This week is pretty easy to get through
Week 9
Once that week is over. Harvey/Harriet will meet a guy who starts to stalk them and plans to kidnap them, Felicity learns about this and has to get rid of them through police and record collecting
If she's able to get him arrested, then you pass the week. If not, you lose the game
Week 10
The final week takes place when the school is going to have their first dance. Felicity has until Thursday to ask Harvey/Harriet out to the dance, but if she's not able, she'll just get the friend ending
If she's able to ask them out, there are 6 possible endings you could get depending on how you eliminated your rivals and many other things
Elimination methods
Lethal methods:
Stabbing(knife, scissors, shears, saw, and spear)
Drowning via fountain or toilet
Choking via hands or rope(high strength, mini game comes in)
Decapitation via power saw or chainsaw(from Suzanne)
Going to the rival's home

Making Harvey/Harriett hate them(different way, to make then REALLY hate them)
Let me go into detail for each rival:
Iven Davis:
Befriending: This elimination is pretty easy since you both are in the same friend group, you learn that his parents been going through a divorce and he wishes they would just get along
In response to this, you will set up a dinner date in town where the two adults meet and talk things over
Once you pass this, Iven will thank you and say he's willing to give up his confession for you as a thank you
Matchmaking: another guy(Duval Burns) happens to be in love with Iven and wants to confess to him. You can help them set up a date in town where they will talk, you will have to help Duval say things Iven will like and then order food that matches Iven's likes. Each day will have a different date. Some ideas I have are a movie theater, the park, a outlook, and a trip to the shops.
By Thursday. Iven will either confess to Harvey/Harriet or Duval, after he confess, Duval will accept and after that week they will be a couple
Rumors: Felicity is too nice to ever spread rumors in real life but is also desperate to keep her crush single, so she'll go anonymous and spread some unsavory rumors about Iven. You'll stalk Iven and watch his every move, taking photos of things out of context(Ex: him talking to an older man/woman, looking at a sex shop, walking past a crying child) After that, you'll be able to write a fake statement. There will be a meter to let you know if it's believable, if it isn't then you'll most likely fail.
After that, Iven will have to move to another school due to the harassment
Suicide: Easy enough to explain. Just shift the bully's attention towards Iven by making him accidentally go towards them, the bullying will escalate to physically hurting him which may very(Ex: Fleecer may cut holes in Ivan's gym clothes during P.E, he might push Ivan down the stairs, he might get his gang to write things on his desk, he might poke him with scissors, and he might beat him up after school hours that you might be able to see this on the way home where the girls block half of it saying things like
"Move along, unless you want to be next."
"Keep it moving."
"If you tell anyone, you'll be just like him."
"Came to see a show? Sorry to disappoint, but Fleecer doesn't like an audience."
"Fleecer is so cool, I wish I was like him."
By the end of the week, Iven will kill himself depending on how far the bullying has gone. The worse being cutting.
Making Harvey/Harriet hate them: Simple. Just make Iven look like a complete jerk. Some examples being: making Iven trip Harvey/Harriet, making him spill their drink on them, hacking into Iven's account and sending death treats to Harvey/Harriet, Iven making promises and not keeping them, and etc. By the time they confess, Harvey/Harriet will deny their feelings and leave
Suicide and rumors are the same and will apply to every rival the same
Louise Hill:
Befriending: Louise will ask Felicity to bring her some study notes that have the correct answers so she can study them, once she brings them to her house. Louise will then tell her that she's a little tight on money but needs a tutor to help her pass, so you can either get money from jobs(will go on later) or get Afflictus to study with Louise
After you do that, Louise will thank you and say she'll let you keep Harvey/Harriet
Matchmaking: A girl(Bridgette Fox) has developed feelings for Louise and wants to ask her out, you'll have to give her a gift and then wait til the end of the day where then, she'll confess her feelings to Louise. But then get's turned down because Louise is straight, Bridgette runs away crying which makes Louise feel bad stopping her from confessing her own feelings
Iva Woods:
Befriending: Felicity will have to catch Iva in town since she's always busy during school, she can be found in the library. She'll say she doesn't need anything and nothing is wrong with her. But if you stalk her, you'll noticed that she's being followed by an unknown figure. There are two outcomes, you let Iva get kidnapped and then sold for money or you attack the kidnapper before they striked
Once you save her, she will be in your debt and promises not to do anything against you as long as you protect her
After that moment, you must walk Iva to her manor everyday until the last week
Matchmaking: A boy(Oliver Berry) falls in love with her for her money and looks but Iva knows he's only attracted to those things so she refuses to even date him. But you can make him act differently and not making it known that he only wants those things
You can make him act smarter, compliment her personality and not even mention her riches. By the end of the week, Iva will have fallen in love and date him
Vale Fisher:
Befriending: This is the only time you can betray. He's already in love, so all you have to do is ask him to meet you somewhere. You get two options, either the waterfall or your complex
If it's the waterfall, you push him killing him on impact. If it's your complex, then you drug him and kill him there. But with both locations, you can talk to him to get him off your back. At first he'll refuse, but then agree saying his feelings won't go away but he'll let you go be happy
Matchmaking: There is nobody in school or outside school that wants him. But you could try to get him with someone online, you can send him a list of ladies from across the country and see if he finds them attractive
Fleecer Hicks:
Befriending: This is the hardest one to do. You have to get an illegal substance from Afflictus to gain Fleecer's respect. He will tell you that his grandmother died recently and his deadbeat of a father took a very important item that she gave him and would like it back
A mini game will begin where you sneak into the small apartment and find the item that's a heart shape ring. If the father notice you stealing it he will attack you causing a button pressing mini game that is hard
If you beat it. You'll return the ring where Fleecer thanks you and says you can keep Harvey/Harriett but says if anyone finds out about this, then he'll break your skull
Matchmaking: A female from his group(Doreen Fields) falls in love with him and wants him to herself. You'll help her gain confidence to ask him out, of course, he ends up denying her feelings telling her that she's just a bodyguard. Doreen takes this personal and attacks him, she accidentally kills him causing her to panic and run away
Suicide: This feature will be done different. You'll have to make Fleecer's gang go against him by making him sound like he hates them, this is done by recording conversations he has with a friend outside the school where he speaks ill of every member. There are 3 members so the conversations will happen over 3 days and then you'll have to edit them all together and show the girls on Friday
They'll confront him and say they don't want anything to do with him, Fleecer will have a break down and run away from the school to his house
On Saturday, he would kill himself via hanging
Yvonne Keller:
Befriending: You will have to gain major popularity online to be able to talk to Yvonne, this is simple as helping out a student at your school. When she notices you, she will ask to do a duet with you
You two will meet after school on Wednesday by the Bellecour, she will set things up and then you two will start dancing. But a teen with swoop in and steal her phone, you will have to give chase and snatch it back
She will thank you and say she'll be your best friend. But she takes it back when you ask her to stop bothering Harvey/Harriett, she says fine but also says that you were a bit too lame for her taste
Matchmaking: Nobody in school is interested in her, but outside of school, a guy(Bennett Hail) likes her but she never looks in her direction. You help him make him stand out from the crowd so she would notice him. Yvonne walks up to him on Thursday and asks him to do a duet with her, he agrees and they walk away to do a dance together taking her mind away from ruining anyone's reputation
Afflictus system
You can accuses him before school, before class, after school, and during the weekend. Depending on if you get his job back on week 7, you can find him either in the classroom or if you don't pass, in the school alleyway
He's able to get you weapons, lethal drugs, hitmen, outside sources, and new abilities(strength, reading, organizing, cooking, and endurance)
To buy all these things, you must take photos of inside the school mainly ones of your classroom which is class 2-7
But he can’t be used if you’re going genocide, he’ll ignore you and call you a murderer
Suzanne system
If you go genocide, you can call on Suzanne via phone or go to her home and she'll give things that isn't accessible. Weapons, new move sets, keys to a warehouse, popularity boost, hints, and a replay of the tutorial. To get all these things, you'll have to take photos of a student being bullied, a dead body, dead animals and pictures of the graveyard
Complex
Everyday after school hours, Felicity will return to her apartment. There she can study, practice the abilities she purchased from Afflictus, use her laptop to spread rumors or buy things online, play video games that can be bought and can grant certain abilities, go into town to stalk her rival or work or buy things, go to Harvey's/Harriett's house to watch the sleep(this will trigger mid game credits while music plays until you leave), or sleep to pass time
Town system
Their is a full town that is able to be used, there are 9 shops that can grant the player multiple things. Weapons, video games, music, money, decorations, different aesthetics, etc. If their not interested in shopping, then they can stalk their peers or rivals and hear about their lives. Their are also some other characters outside the school, adults will occasionally talk outside stores about things(some will speak in french but have English subtitles)you can also find Afflictus between the school and cafe
You walk to school this way and also walk home this way so you have the chance to get things you may need before the day starts
Job system
In the town, you have 3 job options and each has a different way to pay. The chef job gives you 100€. The librarian job gives you 90€. The assistant office manger gives you 400€. But the jobs require certain skills, which depends on the abilities you get

Talking system
To talk with a student. Just walk up to them and press T(on computer) and Y(on controller)
When you start to talk, you have options. Compliment, give item, request favor, and leave. You don't have a time limit when talking and you can talk to your crush
Giving items to a peer will boost your reputation and will make you popular around school
Phone option
The phone has 8 apps to use. Camera where you can take photos with the C button or left trigger, the school yearbook(if a student has died then their faces will be blackened out), main menu, photo album, save/load, social media, mobile games(a flappy bird or crossing road type mini game), and settings
Student behavior
Each student has a personality that clashes with each other. Certain students are in a relationship, have enemies, friends and some are related.
There are 40 students in the game not including the rivals, H/H, and Felicity. If two students are in a relationship, during lunch they will eat together and after talk and then kiss
If students are in a friend group like Felicity, they will eat together then talk. But if two students are enemies, they will push each other when they get the chance
Based on personality types, students will do different things. Athletic students will go for jogs around the track before classes, artistic students will go somewhere quiet to sketch what they see, introverted students will sit alone to constipate, extroverted students will go to large groups to join in the conversations and so on
During class time, certain types of students will be seen doing something that matches their personality. Lazy students will take a nap, joke students will cause a disruption, and smart students will pay more attention then other students
After school, certain students won't be in town such being the introverted, loners, shy, and smart students. Other students will be. Iven is a shy student so he won't be in town
Class system
Each day has 3 classes. One at the start, one after lunch, and one optional one if you need a stat to go up. Each class has subject that you'll have a paper to, in which you will have to answer correctly(Ex: Simplify 7(x+5)(x-5)) if it's too hard, you can turn down the difficulty and still receive the credit
Teacher behavior
Each teacher behaves like a teacher would, they break up disputes between students, gives emotional support to those who need it, and after school helps students who need it
If a teacher sees blood then they will just assume someone had a nose bleed and clean it up, but if a body is found then they will call the police
They won't apprehend you, instead they'll pull out a teaser and taze you(gotta one up)
Sanity system
I wish to make something separate from what we're used to. Felicity isn't a psychopath or a killer by blood, she had a great childhood and her parents love her very much. She's just pushed to do these things which takes a toll on her mind, of course the sanity will decrease but she won't giggle instead cry because guilt is over coming her
She isn't emotionless. Everyday she'll go home contemplate what she done, if she murder someone she'll stay silent. But if she sabotaged an interaction with the rival, she'll blame herself but then think about her crush and she'll forgive herself afterward

Well I think it might be cool..if possible I would, but still won't cause of clear issues

THOMAS: I really like the series! It’s a horror-romance rpg. Kissy Kissy, Bang Bang! IV is supposed to be the most intense game in the franchise.
THOMAS: In the newest game, you play as Yuki Yamamoto, bi-gender dumbass who is in love with this guy named Kenneth Miller- but someone else is in love with Kenneth and that someone kidnaps you and locks you in her cabin out in the middle of the woods with like three- shit- three other characters and you have to escape before she catches you! I don’t know the full story since the game just- ah SHIT- came out, but it’s my favorite game franchise.
THOMAS: It’s the first game they’ve released with an LGBT+ protagonist, and the youtubers and game reviewers who- SHITBALLS- got it pre-release said it was really inclusive and awesome! Sadly... I will not be able to purchase it though :(
THOMAS: And yes, I do happen to play video games a lot. Usually horror games, but I own all the Viva Piñata games, I have Minecraft so I can- (squeak) - COCK- play it with my brother, and Overwatch. I’m a Junkrat main!

THOMAS: Marjorine and I actually met at the library through a Dungeons and Dragons club that Kyle had started-(squeak)- in middle school, before she came out as a girl. She wanted to be a classic human paladin and I was a cool homebrew faun bard. She- shitfuckass- and I went out for a bit until she came out, then we kinda just went our separate ways since I’m gay. Although, we’re- COCK!- definitely still friends.
KENNY: I doubt they’re gonna be there, sugar. Besides- if he is, Kyle, Scott, and I will keep them in check. Plus, if Thomas is coming, we’ll have him as backup too. There’s no way they’ll fuck us over if we have four of us who know how to kick ass.
THOMAS: I met Kenny through Kyle. He uh.... He introduced me to Kenny when I invited him and his family over for Hanukkah back in the fifth grade. He���d brought Kenny and Kenny’s siblings along with his family since Kenny had been spending the holidays with- shit- them that year due to some issues back home.

I never stopped having major feelings for him, if I’m being totally honest.
THOMAS: But I’d never have a chance with him now that he’s fully dedicated and in a relationship with Marjorine and (squeak squeak) Kenny. Plus, unfortunately, we just stressed each-other out 24-FUCKINGCOCKASS-7...
TWEEK: Thomas?
THOMAS: Huh? Wha-...?
TWEEK: I asked if you had anything in mind for your character, man. Since, ya know, Kyle used to yap all about our superhero game and franchise bullshit all the time to you when we were younger.

Gav played: Her Story
The game: Her Story by Sam Barlow
Score: I loved it
Oh that one’s famous! It’s an extremely distinctive indie game, in which you play as a police detective searching through an archaic video database to find enough relevant clips to draw a conclusion about a murder suspect in an investigation conducted in 1994. The gameplay is mostly created through the technology’s frustrating limitations. Since it’s a carefully designed work of fiction, design “flaws” in the interface mostly serve as as storytelling strengths, which I find very cool.

So what’s the story? Hard to talk about without spoiling it! The suspect may have killed a man. There isn’t a definitive answer, and you’re not going to be told whether you’re right. You also do not have to make a choice about whether to believe her or not, it’s just a matter of going until you feel satisfied.
Talk more about the ~experience~ then! You are given five short clips to start with, and then you must choose keywords to search for in the database to find new clips to watch. Eventually, you will have seen all the ones considered essential, and have the opportunity to tell an npc that you’re ready for a drink. You will not have seen all the clips at that point, and you will be given new admin codes to make it easier to complete the archive. (Some I think are not accessible without the random clip code, since they are simply “yes” and “no” answers from a lie detector test.) Any word you choose will bring up a maximum of 5, and later 15, clips out of all that may contain the word. They are always presented in chronological order, meaning you will find it easier to complete the early interviews than the later ones, as a control on the pace.
You only hear Seifert’s character speak, but the questions put to her are pretty obvious. Her performance is masterful and natural, with lots of fun body language and inflection subtleties to factor into your impression of the suspect. There are two overall interpretations that make sound sense to me, and both are the sort of gradual escalation from “ordinary people” to “what the HELL did she just say???” I truly love in detective fiction.
Hearing disorder corner: I never literally wondered what the hell she’d just said, because subtitles are on by default, and flawless.
Complaints? One of the achievements was really hard for me, and not related to the main gameplay, but the reversi game on the same computer your character is using. It’s completely optional, but if you’re a completionist, potentially irritating.
Will you be playing Telling Lies, its successor? Nope! It’s about government surveillance and ecoterrorism, neither of which interest me.
Trigger warnings? I think it does need some, but I don’t think there’s a good list quickly coming up in a search. Platonic DLAMP
Patton frowned as the credits of the Disney movie they had been watching started to roll. Everyone would be heading to bed soon. It was only ten, and he wanted to spend more time with the kiddos. Besides, it was their first movie night with Janus. He wanted to get to know the other side better.
“Welp, that was fun. See you all in the morning!” Roman said, moving to stand up.
Patton let out a light hearted laugh. “Now, come on, Roman. Don’t you wanna hang out for a bit longer? It’s not too late, we should play some games, or get to know each other better!”
Roman glanced over Patton’s shoulder—at Janus, probably. “Surely I wouldn’t be missed.”
“Of course you would! We love hanging out with you.” Patton gave him a wide smile. “And it just wouldn’t be the same without you here.”
Roman seemed to puff up at that comment, settling back into his place on the couch. “Alright then, I suppose I could continue to grace you all with me presence.”
“Thanks, Roman,” Patton said, smiling at him. “Well, it’s been a while since we had some family bonding—“
“We’re fragments of Thomas’ personality, we don’t really need—“
“—so why don’t we play some games? Maybe get to know a bit more about each other?” Patton glanced over at Janus, who was currently sipping at a wine glass with one brow raised.
The embodiment of morality turned his attention to Logan. “You like astronomy, right, Lo? What’s your favorite planet?”
Logan visibly perked up, adjusting his glasses. “Well, assuming you’re talking about the planets only in our solar system... Ot would be difficult to choose just one. Each planet has their own interesting characteristics. For example, the fact that Mercury has some ice and even organic material, despite being so close to the sun. “But what’s your favorite planet?” Roman said, interrupting him.
Logan pursed his lips. “Well if I had to pick one, I would say Saturn. The rings are very intriguing, and still shrouded in a decent amount of mystery.”
“They’re pretty, too,” Patton added.
“Yes, one might say.”
“Well my favorite planet is Venus, named after the Roman goddess of love,” Roman interjected, puffing his chest up. “Elegant, beautiful, and an excellent matchmaker, such as myself.”
Janus scoffed. “I would’ve guessed you’d pick Jupiter. Considering.”
Roman bristled, glaring at Janus. “And what is that supposed to mean?”
“Oh, nothing.” Deceit’s voice was dripping with sarcasm.
Patton cleared his throat. “Well what’s your favorite planet, Janus?”
“Mercury,” he replied, sipping at his glass.
Patton waited a few seconds. Janus didn’t elaborate.
“Hey, Virge. What’s yours, kiddo?”
“Pluto,” Virgil replied, not looking up from his phone.
Logan cleared his throat, pushing up his glasses. “To clarify, Virgil. Patton was asking what your favorite planet was. Pluto, however, is not a planet. It has been classified as a dwarf planet since 2006.”
Virgil glanced up for a second before his eyes settled back on his phone. “My favorite planet is still Pluto, Logan. Just because scientists decided it isn’t doesn’t mean they’re right.”
“Aw, come on. We don’t leave people out because of size. Pluto can still be a planet,” Patton said, cheerful as ever.
“Pluto is totally a planet! There always has been and always will be nine planets,” Roman added.
Logan pinched the bridge of his nose. “First of all, the number of planets is irrelevant since there is some evidence of there being a ninth planet. Second of all, the classification of a planet in comparison to a dwarf planet is not directly related to size, although there is some correlation. The difference between a planet and a dwarf planet is that a planet has cleared the area around its orbit while a dwarf planet has not, so—“
“Okay, that’s enough nerd talk for one day,” Roman interrupted. “Pluto is a planet, end of discussion. You’re outnumbered here, Logan.”
Logic sighed. “You are failing to understand my point. If you allow Pluto to be classified as a planet, then that would also extend to the other dwarf planets, which is hardly acceptable. All on the basis of your attatchment to a celestial body billions of miles away.”
“Viva la Pluto!” Virgil shouted, throwing one of the pillows on the couch at Logan.
“If you two would just listen to reason—“
“Pluto will always be a planet!”
“It’s a dwarf planet. It’s classified that way for a reason!”
“Well you don’t have all the facts!”
“Which are?”
“I love him!”
“Oh, for the love of Sherlock, will you just—“
“Are they always like this?” Janus asked.
Patton sighed. “Yeah, pretty much.”

Roman wasn’t at Logan’s very much. Logan very rarely had guests over in the first place, but somehow that made days like these a little more special.
It seemed like a perfect recipe for stress, but days just sitting in Logan’s room and watching the sky were the most relaxed he ever felt. It was a side of Logan only he and Virgil got to see. He was laying across his bed, bundled up in a NASA hoodie and tossing a pink rubble ball up into the air on loop. He seemed to not notice Roman sketching him as they listened to music on Logan’s old CD player.
“I still don’t understand why you don’t just get a Bluetooth speaker,” Roman teased as if he hadn’t heard the answer a million times.
“Your lack of comprehension disappoints me, Roman. Truly, I am saddened by this.”
“Holy shit!” Roman gasped. “Logan Zander Hamilton has feelings?! Are pigs flying too?!”
“Thanks for the heart attack, asshole,” Logan said, chucking the rubble ball at Roman who caught it without flinching. “You are, by far, the worst of my close friends.”
“Aww, you said we’re close friends,” he teased. “Can’t believe I'm worse than Remy though.”
“Remy is only a close friend when he isn’t being an asshole.”
“But he’s always being an asshole.”
“Exactly.”
Roman smirked and tossed the rubber ball back to Logan. “So what’s the rundown?”
“Rundown?”
“The list. Come on, you can’t tell me you have a ranking of your close friends and not tell me the ranking.”
“It starts with Virgil and the more you push this the lower you get,” Logan said.
“Aww. Where’s Narcissa?”
“Number four.”
“Patton?”
Logan rolled his eyes. “Having powers does not constitute friendship.”
“That’s harsh,” Roman said. “Toss me the ball back, would ya?”
Logan tossed lower than Roman’s hands and smirked as the force smacked straight into his stomach. “I just... I don’t trust him, I don’t know.”
“You didn’t seem too wary of him at Emile’s party. Hell, you even sat next to him!”
“Falsehood, I was simply looking out for his best interest regarding Seth. That doesn’t mean I trust him any more than the one-eyed little cretin.”
“Nice Monsters Inc. reference.”
“Thank you, I try.”
“Aww, for me?”
Logan cleared his throat. “Nonetheless, I think we just need to be more careful with our trust. We still don’t know what he’s capable of with his powers.”
“We don’t know what Virgil is capable of either. Plus, Patton’s powers already put him in the emergency room quite preposterously.”
“Never put that much alliteration into a statement ever again,” Logan said. “And of course we can trust Virgil, we’ve known him for years.”
“My point,” Roman corrected, “isn’t that we shouldn’t trust Virgil. My point is that we should give Patton a chance.”
“You’d almost think you have a crush.”
“A squish! No- I- I mean, there’s nothing, but you know crushes aren’t my thing.” He sighed, running his fingers through his hair. “Not this easily at least.”
“Because of your crush on Virgil?”
“You bitch!” Roman yelled, laughing as he smacked Logan with a pillow. “I’m over it, I swear. And the bigger issue here is your crush on Virgil and don’t you dare try to deny this you two are one heartwarming conversation away from becoming the next Remy and Emile.”
Logan turned bright red. “You honestly believe that Virgil would-” He hid his face in his hands. “You’re the worst.”
“I’m saying if he could open his fucking eyes and get it through his thick skull that you’re gayer than the crowd of a My Chemical Romance concert than maybe he’d actually try to ask you out.”
Logan slowly looked up from his hands. “He- What?”
“If you’re honestly surprised he’s into you, then-”
“No, no, that actually makes sense. He thinks I’m straight?!”
Roman sighed. “We’ve been trying to tell him.”
“Smart enough to make honors but not enough to realize I’m gay. Wow. This is very troubling, Roman. Am I- dare I ask- Am I not gay enough?”
Roman laughed. “Could be gayer.”
“I’m going to have to write ‘raging homosexual’ on my forehead, aren’t I?”
“I’m afraid so. Don’t worry, I’ll write ‘enraged aroace’ on mine so we’re even.”
Logan laughed and something seemed to radiate from him. When he opened his eyes they were a perfect reflection of the night sky. He was able to blink this away but it still managed to cause a sinking feeling in Roman’s gut.
Magic.
Of course...

It was impressive, to say the least, watching Virgil work. They were deep within the forest as Virgil ran amuck and Roman sat against a rock with his umbrella on one side of him and his sketchbook in his lap.
“Okay, okay!” Virgil yelled excitedly. “Get your umbrella ready, I’m going to make it rain.” Electricity sparked from his hands and surrounded him.
“I highly doubt that,” Roman teased, opening his umbrella. “Unless you mean cash-wise because I’m willing. I’m even willing to strip for you if you pay me. I’m a broke bitch, Virgil. Give me your money.”
“Shut up,” Virgil laughed. “You’ll break my concentration.”
He ran past Roman, jumping into the air and landing in a superhero pose that had clearly been rehearsed. With a loud crack of thunder, it did, indeed, begin to rain and Roman raced to sketch Virgil as quickly as he could before his subject moved.
“Well,” he muttered to himself. “At least I’m faster at drawing now.”
“You okay?” Virgil asked, sitting down next to him. The rain hadn’t been strong, and it was already starting to clear up, but it was just enough to wet his face and cause his shirt to cling to his muscles.
“I’m fine it’s just... I don’t know. I’ve been thinking. Bad thinking.”
“Phone a friend or call a national helpline?”
“Phone a friend,” Roman said. Virgil visibly relaxed. “Specifically some magical superhuman friends.”
“Still worried about your powers?”
Roman sighed. “I just... you have that cool shit you just did! With the lightning and rain, and Logan is starting to develop his powers too. Even Patton, we may not entirely know what his powers are but he has them!”
“Maybe it’s like puberty.”
“This is not like puberty. I haven’t been able to do anything since the cave and just- I can’t stop thinking about if something happens. What if someone is in danger and we all need to help them? I’d be completely useless to you!”
“Roman, you’re never useless to us. And nothing is going to happen.”
“How can you be so sure, Virgil?” He looked down and whispered, “What if someone goes missing?”
“That’s a very Logan thing of you to say,” Virgil teased, bumping into him. Roman leaned his head on his shoulder.
“We don’t know what’s going to happen. There could be anything out there.” He sighed. “And I want to help if it does.”
“You’ll get your powers, Roman, and I’ll be here to help you every step of the way.”
“You’re a good friend, Virgil.”
“Only because you’re a good friend in return.”
And so, they sat there, leaning against each other as the rain fell softly around them. It was calm, watching the rebirth of nature, as the deepest of Roman’s anxieties buried themselves away, giving him a break- even just for the time being.

Roman had gotten used to being at Patton’s house pretty often. Dot and Larry had seemed to warm up to him (and since Patton started seeing Seth, Larry seemed more trusting of Roman). “Happy New Year, Mrs. Hart,” Roman greeted with a smile.
“Oh, Roman, you can call me Dot.”
“No, I don’t think I can, Mrs. Hart,” he said, still smiling.
“Oh, very well, will you be staying for dinner tonight?” Dot asked.
“Oh, well, I wouldn’t want to intrude on your family time and-”
“Nonsense!” Larry laughed as he passed through. He leaned towards Roman and stage whispered, “You’re one of Patton’s better friends anyway.”
“Larry!” Dot scolded as Roman blushed in embarrassment. “What my husband means is that you’re always welcome to stay as long as you’d like.”
“Mom, are you embarrassing my friend?” Patton asked as he came down the stairs, he wore a baggy sweatshirt and gym shorts and his hair was messy as if he had just woken up.
“Patton, you need to look presentable for company!”
“He’s seen me look way worse,” Patton justified.
“I’ve seen Logan look worse, which I think is way more important.”
“Go get changed,” Dot said.
“Fiiine,” Patton groaned, quickly running up the stairs. Roman couldn’t help but laugh at how their sweet and gentle Patton could so easily turn into the human version of a lemon.
“I’m sorry about him, he’s just been so off lately.”
“Every teenager is during the break, Mrs. Hart. You turn nocturnal. I’m sure he’s just making up for being awake past four A.M or something.”
Dot sighed. “I suppose you’re right. And I suppose you should also tell your mother you’re staying here for dinner.”
“Fine, fine,” he laughed. “You’ve twisted my arm. I’ll go call her.” He stepped aside from the kitchen and sent out a quick text. He knew his parents didn’t care, but he still felt bad about lying to Dot.
He looked up as he heard a thump down the stairs. Patton was standing in front of him, hair-styled meticulously with a white and blue floral button-down tucked into a pair of lightly ripped jeans with cat socks on. Somehow, even his glasses looked perfect.
“You clean up nicely,” he said.
Patton rolled his eyes but held a tiny sliver of a smile. “Whatever, my mom just worries about ‘presentation’ all the time. You don’t have to play along.”
“No, I mean it,” he said. “You, uh, look really nice.”
Patton laughed. “Well, thanks. You don’t look too bad yourself.” Roman blushed as they headed up to Patton’s room. “I’ll warn you, it’s a bit messy. I’ve been trying to reorganize but, well, you know how it is.”
“Can’t be worse than Remy’s,” Roman shuddered. “We never ask why it’s messy. Not after the incident with Dad’s car.”
“Cool, so, uh, remind me to never go to Remy’s house ever again.” He opened the door and carefully toed boxes away, clearing a path to his bed. “New decade, new me.”
“So what are your resolutions?” Roman asked, moving a pile of clothes out of his way.
“I’ve never been one for resolutions, they’re so overwhelming and discouraging when you mess up,” Patton explained. “I just try to be me, you know. Every day is an opportunity to grow and be better. To move on from the past. I don’t need a calendar to tell me when to grow up.”
“That’s a very admirable ideology, Patton,” Roman said. “My goal is to just be even gayer.”
Patton laughed as he moved away unfolded clothes and miscellaneous stuffed animals. “That’s a good goal to chase.”
“Indeed it is, but I think you called me here for more than just resolutions,” Roman said, waving Patton’s notebook in the air.
Patton took the notebook and grabbed a pen. “I’m sorry.”
“Don’t be, this just means you owe me a movie date,” he teased. “No superhero movies, though. I think we need a break from superhero stuff.”
“A movie date,” Patton laughed, flipping through his notebook. “I don’t think Seth would like it very much if we called it that.”
“Then we can go on our movie date and Seth can continue being the human version of Avengers: Endgame.”
“Endgame was good,” Patton said weakly. He looked away from Roman’s stare. “Okay, fine, it wasn’t. But that’s not the point. The point is that we’re trying to figure out who this mysterious victim is.”
Roman’s stomach dropped like an apple from a tree. “So, we’re sure this is going to happen?”
“We’re being prepared in case it does,” he said, scribbling names quickly. “I still can’t differentiate past from future in these dreams but... I think this might be both.”
“Both?”
“He’s taken Remus before. Or done something to him. The name Moira comes up a lot, I think that might be the name of the woman from the club.”
Roman grabbed his sketchbook and held his hand out. Patton tossed the pen at him. As he quickly scribbled, he thought aloud, “Was Moira a random woman in a club? Or was she Morality?”
“Morality is a girl?” Patton asked. “That would explain some of the dreams, but when we met he- she? They?”
“I don’t think he’s a girl now,” Roman said. “She’s definitely not cis.”
“Too bad we can’t just ask.”
“Morality doesn’t talk to you?” Roman asked. “Sometimes I wish Remus would shut up.”
“Maybe that’s your power,” Patton teased. He made a grabby hand towards Roman for the pen. “Thank yooouuu.”
“That’s a lame power,” Roman said. “Plus I’m pretty sure Logan does that weird meditative thing with Knowledge.”
“Too bad there’s not a way we can all talk to the spirits and figure this out. Wait-” He scribbled something quickly just off from the chart he had been working on. “We’ll cross that bridge when we get to it.”
“So who’s getting kidnapped?”
“I’ve seen Logan in the hallways of where I believe our victim is getting kidnapped. It’s not him.”
“Okay, good to know.”
“You’re always with me whenever I see the missing poster. And everyone else I’ve only seen at the party, which had nothing to do with that man.”
“So it’s not Logan and not me,” Roman said. “There’s a lot of people that aren’t me or Logan.”
“I haven’t seen Virgil in any dreams,” Patton said. “Do you think it’s him?”
“No, no, it can’t be. He’s super powerful when he’s just dicking around in his backyard. In danger? I don’t believe he’s our victim.”
“Okay,” Patton sighed. “Okay. We still don’t have much to work with.”
“We have time, right?”
“I hope so.”
“Time for what?” Dot asked in the doorway.
“Studying!” Patton lied. “Yeah, uh, we’re studying for, um-”
“Patton has Mrs. Green for chemistry,” Roman said. “And her class is the absolute worst. Luckily for him, I had her back in my sophomore year so I’m helping him study.”
“Aw well isn’t that nice,” Dot cooed. “Dinner is almost ready so you boys might want to start heading down.”
“Sounds great, Mom. But you should head down now, I smell burning.”
Something shone in Dot’s eyes. “Oh dear, I smell it too! Hurry down boys!”
“You’re a shit liar,” Roman said. “I hope you know that. I’ve literally never seen anyone as bad at lying as you are. You’re so bad.”
“Okay, okay, whatever. I don’t feel comfortable lying.”
Roman reached out to cup Patton’s cheek. He stiffened up but made no move to get away. Roman brushed his thumb across the skin under Patton’s eye. “Interesting...”
“What are you doing?”
“Your face turns pink when your powers work, well, part of it does. It’s like the night you first, you know.”
“I still don’t know how to get rid of it! Dinner will be ready any second now, what do I do?!”
“Relax,” Roman said, pulling something out of his bag. “This was too light for me, but I think it can work for you.” He opened a small thing of concealer and put some on his finger. “Hold still.” He leaned forward, gently applying the concealer and fully aware of Patton’s breath against his face. He silently prayed that neither of the Hart parents walked in.
He leaned back, ignoring the blush on Patton’s face. “That should work. Keep this in your blog in case something ever happens at school.”
“You think something like this will happen at school?”
“No, but it’s still better to be precautious. Now let’s go get some food, I’m starving.”

Roman had begun to spend a lot of his free time in the art room. He’d eat his lunch in a hurry, if he even ate at all, and quickly head over with his sketchbook in hand. It was nice to have a quiet space with just his earbuds and his art supplies.
Mostly quiet.
The earbuds hadn’t granted him silence for very long.
“She’s pretty,” EJ commented. “Sorry, I don’t mean to be rude. You’re very talented though, who is she?”
“I’m not entirely sure,” Roman answered.
“So, like a mystery woman?”
“More like a design I’m working on.” He flipped to a new page. “Is there anything I can help you with?”
“I guess not. I’ve never seen you around here before. Typically no one I know comes in here.”
“I’ve been a bit more motivated these past few weeks.”
“With mystery women?”
“You could say that,” he said. “I like your bracelet.”
“Oh, um, thank you,” EJ said, fiddling with the orange beads that spelled out “THEY-THEM”. “Not too many people notice it.”
“Are you fluid?”
“No, but I am non-binary,” they said. “I’m a demigirl but I’m also genderflux, which just means that how strongly I feel my gender changes. Sometimes I feel very strongly like a girl, other times I hardly feel like one at all.”
“So the pronoun bracelets.”
“When I don’t feel like a girl, she/her just feels wrong. They/them is fine whenever though, so if you’re not sure you can just use that.”
“Good to know,” Roman said. “I’m he/him all the time. I’m sure you already know Narcissa uses she/her, but the rest of us use he/him. Logan also finds they/them acceptable if that’s worth noting.”
“Good to know,” they teased. “Your group really knows how to throw a party.”
“Yeah, we all saw you and Narcissa on New Years,” Roman said. EJ blushed pink.
The bell rang, signaling the end of lunch. Roman quickly packed up his art supplies and put them in his bag before swinging it over his shoulder. “Where are you headed?” he asked.
“Art is my next class,” they explained. “I find it easier to wait here.”
“Fair enough,” Roman laughed. “I’ll see you around, then?”
“You certainly will,” they said with a smile as Roman left. Their eyes never left him until he was completely out of view. “And I’ll be seeing you.”

Roman was alone in his room, sketching every fine line and detail that came into his mind. He was never able to figure out his powers with the others. Could he figure them out on his own? He looked at himself in the mirror, his irises were red and his hair was turning grey. Green smoke twirled around his pen. “Are you just here to tease me?” The smoke didn’t answer. “You’re not very charming, you know. You can at least help me with this Patton mystery. I think he’s onto something here.”
Roman looked down at the drawing and saw Patton on one side of the page and Virgil on the lother. He glared at the smoke. “You’re a real asshole, you know that?”
He pulled out his phone and flipped to a new page. He had taken a good amount of photos from New Year’s Eve, and he wanted some drawings that weren’t strange magical lines. He pulled up a group shot from the party they had talked Seth into taking for them. He zoomed in on EJ’s face, the lighting gave them an almost orange halo. Roman picked up his pencil and started sketching. There was something familiar about their eyes. He brushed off the thought, deciding he needed to work on developing a more unique style.
He scribbled the rest of his friends onto the page, paying special attention to the highlights on Virgil’s skin and the curl of Logan’s hair along with the crookedness of Patton’s smile. By the time he was finished with the drawing, the smoke was gone and he looked like himself once again.
“Your tricks are getting rather tired, Remus,” he scoffed quietly. “You’ll need to find a new way to get my hopes up.”
He checked the time and realized it was getting late. He quickly put away his art supplies and headed to the bathroom, turning on the shower as he did a few more chores.
He turned on his speaker and let his Disney playlist play, putting away his phone as he quickly stripped down. He stepped into the hot water, imaging his stressors melting away down the drain. He closed his eyes and massaged shampoo onto his scalp, singing along to a song from the original Mary Poppins and completely oblivious to the soaps and hygiene products levitating around him.
