songs 10 and 50! ?
10: Disposable Everything (good song great album I don't think I've talked about it much but I would highly recommend it)
50: Night Out (going to be honest I'm listening to this right now and I don't remember it even a little and I've certainly never intentionally listened to it. It's okay though!)

What sort of music taste would Vensa and the gang have? (Modern music, i should specify. I just want to see the gang wear modern outfits, after the cola question)
Hello! Thank you for the question. This one required a lot of thought but I think I have a list of albums each main character would recommend.
Vesna likes music she thinks is "cool" or "funny." She's not very discerning, and will probably enjoy anything you put on around her, unless it's "scary." Her music taste is overall maybe a bit teenaged, with the occasional more cerebral artist. Her favourite song is currently "Ein Kompliment" by Sportfreunde Stiller, which she thinks of as her "Girlfriend Song." Franzesca tolerates this.
Tumblr media
Snježana has very particular taste. She likes a lot of shoegaze and dark metal adjacent stuff, and more experimental music in general, mixed in with occasional hip hop. She hates everything Vesna listens to, but is usually too polite to say so directly. Her favourite song is "Threnody for the Victims of Hiroshima," which she found because of Ljuba- a detail she has since conveniently forgotten.
Tumblr media
Franzesca thinks she's discerning, but she's just passively absorbed the musical taste of her rich friends and immediate family. She wouldn't be able to name a Queen album because she only knows specific songs. She likes 80s bangers, Schlager and some music she remembers from being a teenager in, I guess, the 2010s. Her favourite song is a tie between She Wolf by David Guetta and Heroes by David Bowie.
Tumblr media
Ljuba enjoys music more than any of the others, and knows exactly what she likes, even if she could never put it into words. As a gamer, she listens to as many anime and game soundtracks as 'proper' music. She wildly oscillates between complicated experimental prog rock and the stupidest electro swing you could imagine. She tries to play music she thinks Vesna might like for her, which is only occasionally successful. Snjezana quietly respects her diverse taste, and appreciates that Ljuba will listen to her shoegaze with an open mind. Franzesca hates most of Ljuba's music, except for Ethel Cain, which she says "sounds nice." Her favourite song is either this cover of the Madoka Magika opening, or this cover of People II: The Reckoning by AJJ.
Tumblr media
I hope this answers your question!

For songs, Weight of the World by Shayfer James for Defiance as a whole? Maybe more specifically Rainhaze’s feelings on what he’s seeing there after joining but it may also just fit better as just about all of Defiance from no ones pov
[Music post]
This song would fit very well with the next issue. I can imagine Deepdark singing this.
Tumblr media
Ahh, Sleeping at Last... well, I'll take your word on the song, since I won't listen to it. This is a nice sweet song for Cormorantpaw, though. I'm glad you liked the issue!
"Stitch by stitch, I tear apart If brokenness is a form of art I must be a poster child prodigy"
"I wanna love you but I don't know how I don't know how"
Tumblr media
Oh, some good ones. Achilles Come Down, that's a classic! Definitely can imagine Hush Puppy pleading with Thrasher for it.
"Achilles, Achilles, just put down the bottle Don't listen to what you've consumed It's chaos, confusion and wholly unworthy Of feeding and it's wholly untrue"
youtube
Cruel Angle's Thesis! What a funny suggestion, it would so neat to see that opening with PATFW characters haha. And I do like the song.
youtube
Tumblr media
Ohh, this song is great for the comic. Very PATFWcore. It could fit pretty nicely with Rainhaze specifically, too.
"do you have something you want to tell me? is there something you regret? any time left to warn me is there something i should know?"
"am i еver gonna make it out? am i evеr gonna make it? am i ever gonna make it out alive?"
youtube
Tumblr media
I'm glad you like both my comics. :] I think this song fits Pinepaw pretty dang well. Rainhaze too, maybe!
"Lonely shadows following me Lonely ghosts come calling Lonely voices talking to me Now I'm gone, now I'm gone, now I'm gone"
"Oh, a thousand faces staring at me Thousand times I've fallen Thousand voices dead at my feet"
youtube
Tumblr media
I take music suggestions anytime, but since I'm compiling them now, I may not get to em for awhile. Anything that vibes with me I add to the playlist!
These are both nice spooky songs. Hollow is especially such a classic.
"I push I pull the days go slow Into a void we filled with death"
"We've been drivin' through a desert Looking for a life to call our own"
youtube
"I don't speak, nobody's listenin' It's not safe to seek the attention I won't sink, I won't wallow In this dream that I have borrowed"
"And I'm ill with all that I know 'Cause it shows what little I know I want sacred, I want final And I'm seeking it wherever I go
'Cause I'm hollow, hollow, hollow, hollow Hollow, hollow, hollow, hollow"
youtube
Tumblr media
Good old AJJ, I definitely agree with this song for PATFW.
youtube
Tumblr media
Glad ya liked 26. :) I think this song fits these two, yeah... Cormorant is so new to relationships and so hurt in the past, that he's not sure how to go about it but desperate not to lose it. I'm sure that won't have any consequences!
"Oh, baby, I am a wreck when I'm without you I need you here to stay I broke all my bones that day I found you"
"Was it something I said to make you feel like you're a burden? Oh, and if I could take it all back I swear that I would pull you from the tide"

Hobie x Spider-Person Reader (Chapter Three)
This may or may not be entirely a self insert (if that wasn't obvious already) but I'm having a lot of fun writing this between doodling and playing way too much stardew. I had a specific song in mind while writing because it's one of my favorites (Brave as a Noun by AJJ) but I didn't wanna make it too specific (Even if my ramblings about music tastes were entirely just me rambling about myself.) Anyways, hope you enjoy!!
~~Chapter Three~~
It didn’t take long for the casual conversation to focus back on you.
“So,” Gwen asked, perched on the back of one of the chairs, “Tell us a little about yourself.”
“Well… um, My name is Y/N. I was bitten by a radioactive spider, and for three years I've been the one and only Spider-Man. Or, I thought I was.” You looked around, and everyone was nodding along. This seemed to be a universal experience. You had to think of something else.
“Aside from that, I’m an artist and a musician. I play a few instruments and I sing-“ that seemed to pique Hobie’s interest “- and I graduated high school about a year back. I like video games and, um… I’m not sure what else to say.”
“Musician?” Hobie asked, turning towards you more in his seat, leaning towards you slightly. “What kinda music ya into?” He shot a look at Gwen, one you couldn’t quite read, but Gwen leaned closer as well.
“My taste is all over the place I guess. Classic rock, Alt, indie, various punk subgenres, especially folk punk or pop punk, Taylor Swift… Do you guys have Taylor swift? Doesn’t matter- but I’ll listen to anything,” you couldn’t help the smile that made its way to your face, “My aunt May loved driving me to school when I was younger. We’d put on the radio and sing at the top of our lungs, and if I found a song I’d like I’d write it down and see how fast I could learn it on whatever instrument I felt like practicing.”
You shifted in your seat slightly. Talking about your aunt felt bittersweet now, but you loved music. That and painting were what got you through your tough times. “Do you guys play anything?”
You should have put the pieces together by now. Of course Hobie played an instrument. Two amps sat stacked in one corner of the room, one electric guitar propped next to them, another across the room. Plus the various picks you saw when you came in. Your face bloomed red with embarrassment at the question.
“Of course they do, bro, these two have been trying to start a band here since Gwen showed up,” Pav chimed in, leaning forward as well, though that seemed to just be his posture. “Hobie’s trying to teach me bass, but I haven’t had much time to practice between school and Gayatri and Spider-manning.”
You nodded along, barely noticing the sounds of people moving as you asked “Gayatri? Are they another spider-person?”
“Oh, no, bro!” He started, waving his hands. “She’s my girlfriend back home! Doesn’t even know I’m Spider-Man yet.”
“I’m sure she knows, Pav,” Gwen chimed in, settling back into her seat. “You’re a terrible liar and Gaya’s smart. Not to mention you flirt with her as Pavitr and Spider-Man…” She twirled her drum sticks in her hands- wait, when did she get those- as she spoke.
You switched your attention back to Hobie, who had left his spot on the couch. He was instead plugging his ax into one of the amps. You felt excitement bubble in your stomach. You love watching people play. The sound of live music, the vibrations shaking your chest and buzzing in your head.
“You said Folk Punk? Bit specific, innit?” Your face flushed slightly, but you nodded.
“Yeah. AJJ, Crywank, Pat the Bunny…” You trailed off, laughing quietly to yourself at the face Pav made at the names. You reached for the pocket of your suit, flush to your thigh and fairly well hidden, and pulled out your phone. It was busted and broken, but it still had service… somehow. You really didn’t understand this whole multiverse thing. But you managed to pull up your music and play one of your favorites.
Hobie nodded slightly, turning up the volume so Gwen and Pav could hear, and you couldn’t help but hum along, bobbing your head and tapping your foot. Your fingers twitched along with the note changes you’ve memorized on your guitar. As the song ends, Hobie looked pleased, pushing his guitar towards you.
You tilted your head slightly, sliding your phone back into your pocket before raising your eyebrow at him. He simply nodded, gesturing towards the guitar. “You said you play, yeh?”
“Yeah, but… you just listened to the song, didn’t you?” You picked up the guitar, turning it over in your arms, resting it on your lap. It was amazing, even if it was a good bit beat up. A sticker on the side was peeling up and scratching your arm slightly, but for some reason it didn’t bother you.
“Yeh, but I wanna hear you play it,” he replied, his voice close to a mumble. For half a second, you forgot anyone else was watching you, and you held the guitar closer, ready to play. You felt your face turn red, and your stomach fluttered with nerves. You shook your head, but when you glanced back up, everyone looked at you so expectantly. Hobie slipped a pick between your fingers, and you quickly adjusted your grip as Gwen tapped her drumsticks together, a non-verbal offer to start the song off, like a test to see if you could join them.
Your fingers were cold, poor circulation never your friend anyways but nerves making it worse, and your throat felt tight, but you nodded anyway. You counted the taps, nodding along to the drum sticks hitting the coffee table- Gwen had set up her own makeshift drum set, and you were thankful. It was quieter than the real thing. Your hands were shaky as you plucked out the first few chords, your knuckles pale and tense. The first few words sounded squeaky, like your own throat was strangling itself to keep them from coming out, and you knew everyone noticed. You could feel your face burn all the way to your ears, but you kept on.
As you played, you could feel your hands warm up, your voice leave your throat a little easier. Music was second nature to you, but without your mask, you were never the most confident person. This certainly wasn’t your best work, but you weren’t crying, which was monumental enough for you.
It wasn’t long before you finished, and you shoved the guitar away like it burned. There was a moment of silence, then Pavitr clapping and whooping. You couldn’t help but smile, the reaction reminded you of your Aunt.
“Thanks, Pav. Sorry that was rough, I don’t really play in front of people. I opened for a concert as spiderman once, but that’s different,” you started, picking at your hangnails, staring down at your chipped nail polish.
“Gwendy, you thinkin what I am?” Hobie asked, moving the guitar from you and unplugging it, setting it back down. You finally chanced a look at their faces. Gwen looked ecstatic, Hobie at least a little impressed. You felt your chest swell with the slightest bit of pride.
“Hell yeah! We’re finally getting a band!”

hello hello! this is the anon who sent the AJJ music recommendations for Exile, just wanted to say i'm very glad you liked the music!
i dunno what you'll think of this one but you should listen to the instrumental version of Cocoa Hooves by Glass Animals (i'm pretty sure it's only on youtube unfortunately), it gives some very specific vibes imo.
hope you have a nice day/night!
OKAY Sorry I took so long- Hello again! Happy to see you back
I gotta say, that first minute got me feeling some type of way- Just the slight nausea-ish feeling the song in general gives off is. Man. Those really are some specific vibes, yeah. At around 2:30 it really goes in with that "staring at the floor in a daze" kinda feel, if that makes any sense at all

Do you have any recommendations for folkpunk songs?
boy do i! It really depends on what you want– something more raw and to the 'punl' side you might look at johnny hobo and the freight trains or wingnut dishwashers union, somethinh more to the 'folk' side you might want mischief brew or the mountain goats later stuff. For getting into it I'd say One Last big Job by ramshakle glory is a good albumn for getting into folk punk, i mean, anything by the mountian goats is good and also something to remember is that you probabaly won't like a song on the first listen/if you do then you should definitly listen to more of that artist. I didn't like any of the artists at first-- the front bottoms especially I put down after listening a bit and then i listened on repeat and shuffle for 8 hours and went "that's good" Ajj christmas island is also a good album imo. idk-- anything specific you want?

🐦  Robin’s top albums of 2021  🐦
These aren’t in order of my favourites, but I like these alot and i listen to music from them ALOT. you guys should see my brain its mostly these guys and some stragglers. im just gonna name them in order lol
1. Do- Cosmo sheldrake
This is Cosmo’s newest album and it bangs really hard though i espesially like ‘Did don’t do’ it’s my favourite outta there. I usually play this when I’m writing beacuse it’s not as heavy as other stuff i listen to so i can pay attention to the words i write lol
2. Hissing Fauna, Are You The Destroyer?- Of Montreal
this almbum is so good it managed to make Of Montreal one of my top artists within the month i first listened to it. insantiy incarnate. this one is a really good walking album for me, like i put it on and i am enpowered with the energy to speedwalk.
3. Through the looking class- Siouxsie and the Banshees
very good album but also i mostly listen to it absently and not specifically as an album. im mostly there for spellbound, you’re lost little girl, gun and this wheel is on fire. those are the ones i like i skip the rest lol oopsie
4. Chumpfrey- Feed me Jack
god i love this album its so so juicy and i really like the sounds they do it makes me happy in the brain. rosies is a great example but also pirate muse. those songs are amazing and the whole album is really good as a whole but those guys are the best like i specifically cant wait for them to come on when i know they’re in a playlist. love
5. Just a Lad- Oingo Boingo
goes insane goes evil rolls around on the ground scratching and clawing. this album is the best ever it should be sent to space so aliens can listen to it. This entire thing is pure gold its my favourite thing ever. the specific sound of oingo boingo in general i love but this whole ablum encapsulates every single thing i LOVE into one place. this is the only album i repeatedly put on as an album and not because alot of the songs are in my playlists. its insane. listen to this thing if you want but only the enlightened can survive
6. People who can eat people are the luckiest people in the world- AJJ
Dont make me talk about this thing i’ll explode into a bajillion peices and make a firework noise as my meat bits are launched into the sky like a bloody lightshow. This album is so so so so good its my favourite AJJ album it holds a special place in my heart. this album is just important to me and i love it. love
7. A history of public relations dilemmae- Petrojvic Blasting Company
this is a little unfair since this is their only album asides from their offical work in Over The Garden Wall, but i really really love this album. I love the jazz mixing with folk and it just. lights up my brain. Like princess andy and SINKING SHIPS oghhh i love sinking ships. love love. SIMON WAS IS ALSO RLLY GOOD i love this. theres some songs in here that are only okay but even still it doesn’t effect my love for the album. heart
8. Bury me at makeout creek- Mitski
Guys im sorry you see me Mitskiposting im very very feeling the winter and she’s my best friend. i listen to mistki talking about falling from balconies and kissing people drunk and not caring it sucks and i go a heem heem yes mitski me too mitski. close to being here was the only heartbreaker or Retired from sad new career in buisness. mitski forever
9, Testosterone!- Talkshow Boy
ok im transgender, alright? what do you want from me. i can be a little emo. a lot emo, actually! leave me alone. i like this album alot and it reminds me of 2015 in a good way and i like the funky sound. The contents are very fucked up like seriously this guy is having a bad time but we’re besties its ok. He’s fighting a tiger on the floor and i’m watching. thats my cousin. parasocial relationship with this guy he’s my weird friend’s brother.

hello! i would like ur 40 song wiblur playlist
anon thank you so much for asking <333 while it would’ve been easier to just drop the link i have so many thoughts about everything so i explained why every single song has its spot on this list which was IMMENSELY fun for me
(also: if anyone does want the link i can provide both apple music and spotify but if u would like the apple music link i’d rather it be through dms or an ask off anon that i can make private!)
another also: i bolded all the songs for ease of perusing if you don’t want the director’s commentary and bolded + italicized the ones that i think fit Very Well
another another also: wrote the second bit of this on my laptop and the keyboard is p funky so if there are any typos or things that do not make sense i will try to fix them asap haha
saint bernard by lincoln: this is one of those like. Dream SMP Songs that i added because it fits into so many different relationships and plot lines and arcs but i think there’s some connection to c!wlbur somewhere out there. idk i asked my friend and he said to add it so this one goes out to him
amnesia was her name by lemon demon: ghostbur song ghostbur song! mostly comes from this lovely animatic
o valencia! by the decemberists: okay this is one of those songs that only really has one lyric that fits but is an absolutely banger so it’s here anyway. you’ll also notice a trend of quasi love songs that i relate to c!wilbur’s perception of l’manburg and i think this song shows this in a really cool way, esp with the chorus (‘and i swear to the stars i’ll burn this whole city down’ is The Line)
achilles come down by gang of youths: another one of those Dream SMP Songs. i think this fits better with c!tommy but i like it too much to remove it. this is a somewhat common trend with the earlier songs on this playlist (i’ve been building this thing since january, for reference)
brave as a noun by ajj: another Dream SMP Song. i think certain verses fit better than others when it comes to wilbur’s character but that ones that work really work
harness your hopes by pavement: a song that is one here for vibes alone. i have no idea what these lyrics mean. all i know is that i heard it, thought of c!wilbur, and put it on the playlist. thank you all for being here
evelyn evelyn by evelyn evelyn: sad-ist made this a tommy and tubbo song (as she should) so it’s validity on this playlist is questionable but folks used to compare it to wilbur and tommy’s relationship during the pogtopia arc and i think some points were made there
the execution of all things by rilo kiley: i’m so excited to get here because this was the first song i put on the playlist that i think really works and i thumb nailed an animatic for the last verse and november 16th so! i think it’s a good l’manburg song and the last verse has some good ghostbur lines (‘and lately you’re all alone with nothing left but sleep/but sleep never comes to you, it’s the guilt and forever wakefulness of the weak’)
i’m just your problem from adventure time: this ones a bit tricky since at is my favorite show of all time and i cannot detach this song from its in-show context very well but there is a very cool animatic with this song that landed it a spot on the playlist
man burning by josh ritter: almost became an animatic but the audio i wanted to use (which i recorded at a josh ritter concert and it’s just him and his guitar and there’s echo and it’s very haunting and pretty) has my stepbrother singing in the background and i could not edit it out so. that will probably not happen. but anyways the only hole i would pick in this song is that it’s mostly about self sabotage which isn’t really applicable but i think the imagery is cool
mamma mia by abba: here me out. here me out. this is another song that fits so well and i have spent so many hours thinking about this and somewhere there is a note on my phone explaining how every single line relates to c!wilbur’s entire arc from founding l’manburg to the resurrection (made when we thought gbur was going to get resurrected in january) and just. the metaphorical ‘you’ is l’manburg does this make any sense (another almost animatic except now that wilbur’s actually back it might become an actual animatic)
the other side of paradise by glass animals: no idea why this is here other than being a Dream SMP Song. it’s good tho
infinitesimal by mother mother: they saaaaay it stared with a big bang but they saaaaaaaay it came out of a small thing latelyyyyy i’ve been feeling like a big bang You Know
curses by the crane wives: had a thing drawn out for this song showing the comparisons between c!wilbur and c!niki because of the chorus and i think the last two lyrics of said chorus are the best thing about this one
lonely eyes by the front bottoms: gotta admit that i have no idea how this song got on here but i’ve come to associate it with ghostbur based on vibes alone. it’s a friendly song he’s a friendly ghost it works. the other tfb song coming up fits a bit better methinks
king of new orleans by better than ezra: not to put better than ezra on my c!wilbur playlist but like. something about the whole ‘tasing something up to let it fall’ motif makes me think
get me away from here, i’m dying by belle and sebastian: another almost animatic song (there’s a trend here). not only does the story told in this song work i like the lines ‘play me a song to set me free/nobody writes them like they used to so it may as well be me’ in relation to my l’manburg
montgomery forever by the front bottoms: certain bits and pieces of this song fit so well, specifically the chorus and those bits in the last two choruses Yeah (’montgomery forever and ever and ever and now they’re blowing it up/(x2)/as you started laughing and crying and trying to explain how all you want to do is leave’)
don’t look back in anger by oasis: out of all my almost animatic songs, this one got the furthest. the animatic, which I got pretty far in thumbnailing, was about wilbur and tommy and kind of drawing comparisons between their characters, also about the revolution in general. maybe i’ll finish that animatic one day idk
snow by ricky montgomery: i wish i had a link for this so bad but!! saw art on twitter!! with the lyric ‘bury me six feet in snow’!! and went ahfsdjfk!!
burning pile by mother mother: a Dream SMP Song. also a jam there’s no real specific connection for this one but i think it could fit in a couple of ways
rounds by the oh hellos: in the same position as snow except it was on tumblr..... @ whoever made this comic i saw these lyrics in your brain is massive and your art is incredible
lovely by mt. eddy: on here for vibes alone. there’s something in the lyrical content too, but my thoughts in that regard are not very fleshed out
adventures in solitude by the new pornographers: ah yes..... the song that prompted this all...... this is a beautiful and incredibly well written song and if you’re going to listen to any song off of this playlist i’d encourage you to listen to this one. it’s place of here is mostly cause of the chorus but the imagery in the verses could all represent a part of c!wilbur and i’d love to explore that more
caught in the middle by paramore: obligatory paramore song. i think it got on here because limbo = ‘middle’ but i’m not quite sure. on the verge of being deleted if i can find a better pmore song
delicate by damien rice: one of the oddest songs on this list and i am well aware that it sticks out like a sore thumb. a song that’s on here pretty much because of one lyric, which is ‘and why’d you sing hallelujah/if it means nothing to you’ which i related to both eret’s betrayal and how my l’manburg is hallelujah yknow
bang! by ajr: almost animatic song. i think we all know what the bang is here
somewhere only we know by lily allen: ik i said don’t look back in anger has the most potential to get made into an animatic but this song might actually take it place. on par with adventures in solitude in terms of how pretty of a song it is, and probably even moreso. it’s kind of turned into a ghostbur song in my head, and makes me cry like an infant child every time i hear it
a pearl by mitski: i cannot defend this song’s place on here past the line ‘it’s just that i fell in love with a war and nobody told me it ended’
eight by sleeping at last: the official c!wilbur song needs a spot on here <3 if i can dig up the clip of cc!wilbur talking about this song in relation to his character i’ll add it but until then yeah <3
always by rilo kiley: no idea why this is on here but it fits well!! could not tell you why!! banger!!
celebration guns by stars: it’s a hauntingly beautiful song about war, and kind of one of those that necessarily isn’t about wilbur but moreso his place in the story? idk how to explain it but yes
passerine by the oh hellos: it’s. it’s from the . the fic. yeah h
oh, you are the roots that sleep beneath my feet and hold the earth in place by bright eyes: added this after the real resurrection and i think it’s because fo the imagery? also the last verse
we are beautiful, we are doomed by los campesinos!: all i have to say is ‘i cannot emphasize enough that my body/is a badly designed, poorly put together vessel/harboring these diminishing, so called vital organs/i hope my heart goes first, i hope my heart goes first!’ has always made me think of pogtopia era wilbur :(
dead weight by jack stauber: no real connection other than eret played this song during a break during the ghostbur’s january ‘resurrection’ and i heard it and went :0
point me at lost lands by tired pony: gives me season on l’manburg vibes..... i love how free and passionate it sounds and that's p much the only reason it’s on this list haha
ghosting by mother mother: added this five seconds ago because i could not BELIEVE it was not on here. ghostbur song. mans sang it on that one stream with the reverb and everything. the lyrics ‘i will be kind and i’ll be sweet/if you stop staring straight through me’ hit particularly hard back when everyone thought that ghostbur was actually wilbur in disguise

Have you ever recommended AJJ to somebody? How do you go on about it? I usually say: Start with Christmas Island, then listen to Knife Man. I feel like CI is very beginner friendly, while Knife man introduces them to their folkier punkier songs with a cohesive album.
To be honest with you, I really haven't. The main "recommending" I do at this point is just posting them on my blogs, haha; I do talk about AJJ and share relevant lyrics in conversations but I don't necessarily urge friends to listen, because I'm quite aware that the sound is probably not going to be a hit for them. I like simplicity and I like the vulnerability of Sean's voice, but from an objective standpoint I don't know that the sound would stand out to most as something remarkable. There are also quite a lot of people who don't really differentiate acoustic country and acoustic adult contempo and folk music very much and dislike all of them as bland or faux-authentic, and it can be difficult to even explain the concepts of folk punk or anti-folk, let alone have them really hear it when they are so much more focused on the sound than the lyrics. Because of the fact that the songwriting itself is something I feel very personally connected with in like, an embarrassing way-too-much way, I think I'd rather have a friend not listen than listen and think it's crap, y'know?
I can understand your strategy! There's a lot of contention around Christmas Island for some reason, I don't get it, I'm pro-Christmas Island and I agree it's probably not too alienating. Definitely wouldn't start with Knife Man, but I do think that Knife Man and People Who Can Eat People... are the albums I'd explain as being especially important ones and therefore eventual necessary listening, but perhaps they should build to those. This is going to be a curveball but if I were introducing someone to AJJ right now, between 2020-2022, and assuming I have some impression of their mental state and capacity to take in political art... I may recommend Good Luck Everybody specifically as a pre-pandemic pandemic album, without the expectation that they would then go on to explore AJJ's discography as a whole (but including that I think it's worth doing.) To me, Good Luck Everybody was the "pandemic album," way moreso than Song Machine or anything else I listened to, and it's remarkable that it managed to touch on so many personal, parasocial and political points in 2019 that would boil over into the only things any of us could think about in 2020 onward. Under normal circumstances I wouldn't call it a beginner album, but I can actually think of several situations where I'd recommend it now specifically based on the timeframe it was released in and the mood it captures.
...But other than that, yeah, I think I'd maybe say start at Christmas Island, then Can't Maintain as a transition, then depending on what they respond well to I'd point to Knife Man or People Who Can Eat People. (Actually, I don't think The Bible II is the worst starting place either due to the somewhat less folk-punky sound. I definitely wouldn't start with an album before 2008 no matter how dear they are to me. When they're in deep, then you can start introducing split EPs and compilations and covers and pre-2008 albums.)

answering all the music asks i posted cause why not?
1.    a song from the year you were born
Pictures of You by The Cure (probably one of the more decent ones that was popular at the time)
2.    a song that reminds you of school
1979 by Smashing Pumpkins or maybe Heart Shaped Box by Nirvana and a bunch of bad alternative post grunge stuff that i used to absentmindedly listen to on the radio
3.    a song tied to a specific moment in your life
Coin Operated Boy by The Dresden Dolls
4.     a song that is not sung in your native language
Me voir un amie plurer by Jacques Brel, or maybe Cler Echel by Tinariwen
5.     a song over 5 minutes long
O’Malley’s Bar by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds was the first thing that came to my mind, or maybe Bella Lugosi’s Dead by Bauhaus
6.     a song under 2 minutes long
OOO by Karen O. It’s really beautiful and people should listen to it now.
7.     an instrumental
For Belgian Friends by Durutti Column
8.     a classical piece
The Wedding Organ song
9.     a song with no percussion
Waste of Paint by Bright Eyes
10.   something you’ve heard performed live
I mean, it’s not my favoritest thing in the world, but Blue Oyster Cult’s ‘Don’t Fear the Reaper’ is pretty well known by pretty much everyone
11.   something you’d give ANYTHING to hear performed live
I think actually seeing The Doors play some of their songs at their peak would have been spectacular
12.   a song by an artist who’s from where you’re from (town/city/state/country)
Well, Idaho pretty well sucks when it comes to arts. But Built To Spill came from Idaho and I’ve always been pretty fond of their song Canned Oxygen
13.   a song made suddenly precious because of a special someone
Oh my god this is corny, but Never Gonna Give You Up by Rick Astley was something Josh and I used to have fun listening to - it was partially sarcastic and partly because we genuinely liked cheesy 80′s hits more than we wanted to tell anyone
14.   a song made suddenly awful because of a special someone
Zack pretty much ruined anything by Alice in Chains for me. I was never a big fan or anything, and i have respect for what they were doing at the time, but when people try to sound like Alice in Chains it grosses me out. Only Alice in Chains can be Alice in Chains.
15.   something to BELT SHAMELESSLY/do DIVA HANDS to
Don’t Stop Me Now by Queen of fucking course
Maybe Careful Who You Dance With by Parenthetical Girls
16.   something to SCREAM ALONG to
For Real by Okkervil River, or I Luv the Valley OH! by Xiu Xiu
17.   a song for raging
Bite the Hand that Feeds, or Everyday is Exactly the same, both by Nine Inch Nails
18.   a song that demands lipsyncing into a makeshift microphone
this isn’t something i think about too often so the only things that come to mind at the top of my head are all cliche and i don’t want to mention it
19.   the last song you had stuck in your head
Elegant Chaos by Julian Cope
20.   a song you’re dying to master all the words to
secretly i wish i knew all the lyrics perfectly well to the entire Hamilton musical and i pretty much do, but not quite yet. I don’t understand all the lyrics of Death Grips songs. I am not dying for any of this though because if i wanted to I could know most of it in a matter of a few weeks.
21.   a song that you could SLAY at karaoke
eh. I could slay nothing. But i’ve practiced this absurd Morrissey routine from his early Smiths days and i pretend to dance like him just to make my sister laugh
22.   a song you can’t help but dance to
Dancing With Myself by Billy Idol
Maybe Fell in Love with a Girl or The Hardest Button to Button by The White Stripes
23.   a song that makes you want to dance on a table
Life of an Office Worker by Momus. Maybe Raised Right Man by Tom Waits or American Garbage by AJJ
24.   a song that makes you wanna STRIP
I don’t want to strip. But if i did strip i would pick old 20′s, 30′s and 40′s tunes just to be weird.
25.   a song with a great music video
There There by Radiohead
26.   a song that makes you act out the music video when you hear it
pshaw, i don’t ever do this
27.   a song with counting
Roadrunner by Jonathan Richman
28.   a song with spelling
Loverman by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds
29.   a song with lots of clapping
Black Balloon by The Kills
30.   a song 40 years older than you
I looked it up and it appears that Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer is from that year
31.   a song you wish your parents didn’t know the words to
a lot of the Beatles songs. My father does a miserable impression of John Lennon
32.   a song whose lyrics shocked you once you were old enough to understand them
it didn’t exactly shock me, nor is it my favoritest song in the world, but Bruce Springsteen's song Born in the USA isn’t some validating anthem that is all republicany and pro America in the way people have always used it. I grew up with the notion that it was understandably, as i am sure many did.
33.   a song you have ZERO patience for
certain kinds of really lame pop rock that’s on the radio. There is this song (and i just had to look it up because i didn’t know who did it) by James Arthur called Say You Won’t Let Go, and it played over and over and fucking over on the factory floor and when i hear it i want to die because it’s extremely bland to me
34.   a song you’d like your favorite artist to cover
I mean, i don’t feel like anyone should cover something they don’t want to. I have no specific ideas on this
35.   a great song you discovered thanks to a movie
there are some cliche songs i have found because of movies and i really want to avoid mentioning those ones. I do have to admit to everyone though that School Of Rock with Jack Black in it was probably where i first heard Moonage Daydream by David Bowie. And Substitute by The Who.
36.   a great song you discovered thanks to television
I heard Nothing’s Gonna Hurt You Baby on The Handmaid’s Tale and i pretty much fell in love with it
37.   a song you’re ashamed to have in your music library
I am not exactly ashamed of it, because actually she’s a fucking amazing lady, but I feel like my family and friends are a little surprised to find out how much i actually like Peaches’ Fuck the Pain Away
38.   ok what’s the song you were too ashamed to even post for #37
there are a few of the Eagles hits that me and my mom used to sing together. They are really lame, but i think about good times with my mom and so i really can’t dismiss them,
39.   the most played song in your music library
That doesn’t show. But i am sure it would have to be I Know It’s Over by The Smiths because I had a devastating experience in my life where i romantically lost someone and I spent three weeks in bed with it on repeat. And i still like that song. I am not tired of it yet.
40.   favorite disney song
You know, i think i liked that song that the prince and snow white sang together. I always sort of laugh when the Prince belts out from nowhere ‘Now That I Found You, Here’s What I Have to SAAaaaayYYYYY!!’ It’s pretty fancy stuff.

7: Where did the title come from?
so answering this requires a minor history lesson
way back in the dark and dusty days of 2011, a person i watched on dA was posting art of their digimon fan-project, Digimon Advent, and I thought: “hey! this is cool! i love digimon more than any sane human being really should– I should do one of these, too!”
AND I DID, and the resultant project from that wild impulse was the colossal expenditure of effort known as Digimon re:GENESIS, which I named because at the time, I was a senior in high school, it sounded cool to me; it implied a new beginning (a genesis), it included the re: of email parlance – meaning it meant “regarding the start” or “restart”, because, hey, it was a new project in a new universe.
so when I had the idea for my second project, I decided– why not keep the naming convention?so, re:CONNECT has the same set of dual meanings– both literally “reconnect” and “regarding connection”, which are, respectively, a major plot point (as noted at the end of chapter 9) and a major theme (the connections between people).(This is why I refer to my projects as a whole as the re:SET, because it’s a set. Get it?)
9: Were there any alternate versions of this fic?
(bitter laughter)
The false start version that I started writing in late 2013, that got all of two and a half chapters in before my life got– weird, killing my drive and ability to write pretty much at all for three years. Don’t spend time around people who make you feel bad for loving things, kids!
It’s still up in the corners of the internet, but because the two chapters that went up got rewritten as-is, you’re not missing much by not seeing them.
As for actual plot drafts changing– man, I swear, when I complete this story, I’m going to post my plot notes. I’m saving various versions of them the further I go. It’s hilarious how much things end up shifting around in the process of writing with the terrifying mix of meticulous planning and by-the-seat-of-my-pants writing I do.
(ETA: though there haven't been many character change-ups, originally Sam and Gelermon were going to be the late arrivals to the team, but the reason i decided against this was -- no lie -- because I didn't want to have a male human majority in the main team. I rearranged things pretty early on to have them be part of the core cast from the start so that, once the sixth member joined, it would be even.)
13: What music did you listen to, if any, to get in the mood for writing this story? Or if you didn’t listen to anything, what do you think readers should listen to to accompany us while reading?
This depends entirely on which character I’m writing, and what’s going on… Seriously. I could give you actual lists of songs for every chapter, but let’s keep it simple and just go over general artists I tend to gravitate towards for general mood music™.Links are to the respective character mini-soundtrack page, for more specific songs.General: Streetlight Manifesto, Paradise Fears, SmallpoolsFor more action-y shit: Zebrahead, The Faint, Carpenter Brut
Natalie: Rilo Kiley, Paramore, Marianas TrenchXander: Screeching Weasel, The Queers, JawbreakerPeter: fun., Modest Mouse, Jukebox the GhostMeghan: Owl City, Walk the Moon, Clean BanditSam: Motion City Soundtrack, AJJ, The Mowgli’s

This is um really random but I saw ur fanmixes and they're really neat?? I was wondering if you had any tips for making a mix for a character bc I want to try and get into doing that sort of thing? Sorry this is really out of left field ^^;;
NO THATS OKAY I LOVE TALKING ABOUT MIXES AND YOU HAVE ACTIVATED MY 100% SPECIAL INTEREST MODE i really love mixes in any case and i have a lot of thoughts
here’s a rundown of a few things i think are important in a mix, and i’ll explain them all below the cut because this is bound to get pretty long:
a theme/genre: it can be any kind of theme you like (ie a pairing, particular aspect/trait of the character, something abstract like corrosion, a particular music genre), but it helps in finding tracks that go together and having good flow to the mix
transition/flow: this is one of the most important things i think! don’t just toss a few tracks together, they need to transition well from one to the next. going from katy perry to ajj doesn’t usually work well, even if both songs work well for the character.
storytelling/track order: related to the transition of tracks, they also need to make sense structurally. say, you have a song about their childhood and one about their love life, it doesnt make much sense to go from their love life to their childhood, so put them in appropriate order.
so to actually start making a mix, i’d say to find a theme or genre first, to work with. that sounds kind of hard, but what works for me is to just collect a bunch of tracks i associate with that character in a youtube playlist, and then see which tracks are strong, if there’s any that work particularly well together, and then just copy those to your draft playlist and find more tracks to build around it.
an example: i know [over 80 tracks i associate with the phantom], but realistically not all those are gonna work together. for [the actual phantom mix] i made, i decided to build around “neil cicierega - wnrdwll”, and specifically searched for [other mashups and other upbeat but distorted sounding tracks] to create the theme of, well, screen burn.
other examples: [my souta mix is based around musicals], which ended up working surprisingly well, and [my manosuke/souta mix is based around dadrock], because, you know, daddy issues, just like me
then there’s the transition and flow! once you’ve got a good feel for what you want, you’re going to have to find songs that actually go well together. that doesn’t just mean in terms of genre, it also means that you make sure you don’t have one really loud song next to a quiet one, (unless you’re doing that intentionally). basically, listen to your songs and decide by ear if it is or isn’t jarring to hear them in that order.
an example: in my phantom mix, [the tracks] go from slow and relatively coherent to faster and more incoherent - and then after raocow’s cat planet (which is 90% “catplanetcatplanetcatplanet”), it goes straight into an ajj song about murder, which is a jarring transition but done for effect.
other examples: i do something similar in [my manosuke mix], from the upbeat “the dear hunter - go get your gun” to “if not now then when - toast” which is in whispers for effect. in [my very first mix], and my souta musical mix, i’ve also included tracks without text specifically for the transitions between songs and making the whole thing a bit less overwhelming/a lot on an end.
EDIT: for this point, also consider looking up covers, mashups, [specific genre] remixes, or even nightcores if you’ve got the right song but bad flow!
my last point, is storytelling! this is a lot more up to personal preference, since you’re the one who knows what you’re seeing in those tracks and what story you’re telling, so i can’t give you a lot of tips on how to do it, but mostly just to keep it in mind. my favorite kinds of mixes are mixes that are an experience from start to finish, with lyrics in one song paralleling those in another, and a good intro and outro, rather than just a few character relatable tracks tossed together!
an example: [the tracks] [in my manosuke mix] start off with songs about childhood/fathers (how much do you love me/father/the hell of it) and then go into narcissism/obsession/a desire to be useful (oh no!/gallery piece/i’ve seen all good people), then murder (go get your gun/toast), confrontation with edgeworth (knight jumps queen), aftermath of his actions and relationship with souta (be nice to me/everyone else is an asshole/knight moves/the hands that thieve) and finally, death (the hands that thieve/best friend). in summary, that’s basically manosuke’s entire story, told in chronological order! and it wouldn’t work very well in any other order.
as for the parallels, the manosuke mix has multiple songs about chess that glue the whole thing together (ive seen all good people/knight jumps queen/knight moves), and the lyrics in “how much do you love me” parallel those in “knight moves” (”how much do you love me/how much do you care” / “do you love any/do you love none”). i do that in the souta mix too with both the original and an instrumental cover of gee officer krupke, and i basically made [a whole (two) mixes structured on parallels and shitty moon jokes] before.
some extra additional tips:
when picking tracks with important lyrics, consider lyric videos/captions/tracks with clear vocals. if the lyrics mean a lot but no one can make them out, that’s not very useful!EDIT: on the topic of accessibility, i personally like using well-known songs, because most people will know the lyrics even without captioning. i know it’s not for everyone, but don’t immediately write off a song just because it’s well-known or like... [a meme]
think about the length of your mix: a really long mix is hard to listen to in one sitting and focus on, but a short one is a short experience
i usually use youtube for my mixes, since 8tracks stopped service outside of north america, but i hear good things about playmoss as alternative
and, well…
it’s probably pretty obvious at this point, but keep in mind i tend to overthink mixes a little to the point of pseudo-science, and you don’t actually need to take all my advice to make a good mix! these are just some things i do, and maybe a few places to start out in, but ultimately the most important thing is of course that you feel good about your mix and like your selection, so that should be your goal above all else!! as long as you enjoy listening to it, it’s a good and successful mix. (if you don’t like listening to it, just keep editing until you do)
good luck with your endeavors, and i hope you have fun making a mix!!!! ty for asking!!! n__n)/
