Reccer Says: It's just SO beautiful. Every word feels gilded or done up in the cosmetics that cover Marion's vanity. The whole thing is poetry, not least of all the relationship between Yussa and Marion. They're so sweet and you can feel the affection they have for each other in every sentence. The way they banter and tease each other is adorable and Viet's voice for Yussa is also just so fun (let that old man say fuck! XD) Also, the way the title ties into the fic is just so sweet.

Reccer Says: It's a very niche ship written in a way that feels very authentic to the characters. It also completely got me onboard to the possibilities of said ship! As well as that, it's just a well written, very sweet fic. A great way to get acquainted with what is probably one of Vox Machina's rarest pairings.

Essek tries to figure out if Eadwulf is in love with him using logic.

Reccer Says: Essek is a goofy little guy trying to use science to explain emotions. I think it's cute.

Reccer 1 Says: I loooooove Yeza's characterization his dynamic with not just Veth and Caleb but the rest of the nein is great Reccer 2 Says: I always love any story fleshing out Yeza and his personality+motivations, and this one does it so well! His patience and kindness in letting Nott persue Caleb, and then his own developing feelings, are just so endearing and fun to read about.

i dont need it in canon because im more than happy to have my ships live in my brain or in fanfic

and i think Caleb x Veth x Yeza is the closest we've gotten to a canon polyamorous relationship (kinda sorta, in a right-angle sorta configuration) in any of the critrole campaigns (and maybe D20 unless I am misremembering or didn't see it)

but i would love it if one of these days, one of these ttrpg shows i watch had a canon polyamorous relationship. it doesnt need to be a ot3 in which each person is involved wit every person because that's actually on the rarer side in real life but i'll take a right-angle polyamorous situation

im not just asking because the bottom table continues to give me so many feels but in this dark world of pain, horror and torment, it would be kinda beautiful if 3 people who found their lives intertwined since their childhoods could find some kind of home together. yknow. as a treat

Mighty Nein Next Gen AU, Part Two

This is part two of my Mighty Nein Next Gen AU where the Mighty Nein have kids. This is the link to the master list, right now it's just parts one and two but I will individually add every kid later on and their wacky hijinks in fanfic form:

Veth and Yeza spend a few years getting back in the swing of things before having another kid

They reopen Yeza's alchemy shop and Veth starts to also do some tinkering and sells it there too

Veth enjoys her family time, inviting all of the Nein to weekly dinners and making sure everyone stays connected

They also visit the Blooming Grove every couple of weeks because all of the Brenatto kids love their Uncle Cad

About three years after the finale, they get pregnant at the same time as Fjord and Jester's wedding

They give birth to a baby girl too and, five years later, another baby boy

The baby girl was born one day after Essek/Caleb/Molly's kid, sparking the rivalry the two girls would have till the day they die

Veth and Beau continue their rivalry by having their kids be rivals but that backfires horribly

Mostly due to the fact that Luc and TJ are similar ages and are chill, Veth's daughter is in an active rivalry with the ShadoWidoMauk daughter, and the youngest Brenatto is dating BeauYasha's youngest

Speaking of Beau and Yasha, these two had a small wedding with just the Nein and close family

Also immediately after the trial they adopt TJ, obviously

They go traveling for a while afterwards, showing TJ the world

Afterwards, Caleb offers Beau a teaching position which she does while also helping the Cobalt Soul

Yasha stays as a stay at home mom, taking care of TJ and her many, many, house plants

It was like a decade later, while on a mission for the Cobalt Soul, Beau saw a tiefling boy hiding in the back of a crime ring she was in charge of cleaning up, only like four or five years old

Beau and Yasha wanted another kid but were having trouble finding the right one

That and combined with the fact that she saw so much of herself in this little one, she took them home

All of the kids had to volunteer time at the Cobalt Soul, like when parents make their kids volunteer at the library lol

Finally, we have Cad

Cad is just vibing for the years, being the fun, chill uncle to all of the Nein kids need

Then, one day a little before Fjord and Jester's triplets are born, they have to bury a mother who died due to health issues a month or so after child birth

It leaves the Clay family in possession of an Air Genasi baby girl

Cad felt an extremely holy energy coming off her and decided to adopt her, naming her Cirrus Clay, like the clouds

When the Nein find out about this and meet her, they all start calling him Cad Dad

It takes him ten years to get the joke, I'm not kidding

The two are extremely close, telling each other everything

One problem though: she loves water and floating in it

Due to her being a bit airheaded at times, she has nearly drowned and her dad had to save her

She is extremely close with her aunts and uncles, her aunts Clarabelle and Calliope help her dye her hair pastel colors with moss

It started a few days after "The Incident".

Luc, tiny halfing child had taken to curling up on his new Caduceus, his Firbolg friend, sometimes on his belly, sometimes up across his chest to sleep when it was bedtime, the others didn't blame him, perhaps Cad being the one to bring him back joined them in someway.

Veth and Yeza were not going to leave their child to sleep alone after the trauma they'd all just endured though, and luckily, being larger than normal, Firbolg's could fit more than one halfling on their torsos, even fully grown ones, so by the end of the night, Caduceus Clay had two and a half halflings sleeping on him.

The next night, he had two and a half halflings on him, this time they'd kind of splayed across his chest and stomach the two older ones with their feet hanging over his sides a bit. And one worried Wizard sitting to one side, book in hand, hoping to keep his little halfling friend and her family in his sights.

A few hours later Caduceus was woken suddenly by something gently roll into his side, if with a slightly pointed edge.

With a sigh he gently tugged the still open book that was digging into his ribs out of the softly snoring Caleb's hands and tucked it into the wizard's ever present book pouch, before settling back in and going to sleep again.

Jester and her mother quickly followed, the little blue Tiefling worried that all her friends she loved were being sad, and being a little sad and scared herself, and her mother worried about her daughter, and about the good people her daughter had introduced her to.

For all her exuberance, Jester knew when not to interfere, she nattered with Caleb, with Veth, with Yezza, Luc, Caduceus and with her mother Marion, but she always curled up on the other side, her mother cuddled with her, still stressed by the outside world, still trying to protect her daughter just like Veth was trying to protect her son.

The soft snuffling almost snores and the wiggle of horned heads getting comfortable was an unusual feeling the first time the two tieflings fell asleep against Caduceus's side, but he got used to it quickly.

Fjord, perhaps because he never knew his own family, perhaps because he knew Jester needed her mother, or her mother needed her, chose to sit next to Caleb instead of alongside them, slightly away, but close enough that his presence was comfortable.

That didn't matter once sleep came, they always ended up rolled together and curled against Caduceus's side as they slept, sometimes Caleb ended up between sometimes Fjord, every time, Caduceus woke up enough to remove hard books, pommeled blades, other uncomfortable things before settling back in for sleep.

Beau and Yasha, never slept on Caduceus when they were together, near, sometimes, comfortably tangled together, not so close other times, he, understood where they went and why, but always as a hhm, good for them feeling, rather than any real interest in the process.

but when they took separate watch, it wasn't uncommon for the one who was on rest to cuddle in wherever they fit until they could go back to sleeping together, in their own little space.

Caduceus's life had certainly gotten strange since meeting The Nein he thought as he woke slightly again as someone moved. Luc was shifting so his hands were touch his mama and papa's faces, that was nice.

They were strange, perhaps he was also strange, But that was OK.

He went back to sleep.

Veth has kind of come full circle in her emotional arc, from spouse and parent to adventurer and back. And if you follow it through, it makes perfect sense, but it’s still very bittersweet.

She was once anxious about having to choose between a future with the Nein, and one with her family, but over the last dozen episodes, the Nein have become so scared that it seems the choice is whether to die with the Nein protecting her family, or stay with her family and hope someone else somehow steps in.

Nott had accepted her old life and her love for Yeza and Luc as part of a past life - they were no longer current to her after she’d spent her time falling in love with the Nein and going on adventures. She was emotionally distant from her old family, because she’d accepted the loss of that closeness and consoled herself to watch from afar with a new family, for whom her love and life was current and vibrant. Even after she got her body back, she seemed to mostly interact with Yeza for sex, probably over-compensating for emotional distance, or to talk about their son and little else. Sure, the massive degree of emotional infidelity, both romantically but also just sort of generally, made her feel awful - but it didn’t make her in love with Yeza.

But as time has passed and she’s seen her son grow up, the danger has become more and more overwhelming, and Veth has been second guessing herself again. She’s gotten used to being able to occasionally see him. She’s resigned herself to the idea that either Caleb doesn’t return her romantic feelings, or he is so averse to disrupting a child’s family that he’d never act on them if he did. The excitement of adventure have been yielding less and less reward for their mounting risks, and the tasks they’re doing are becoming less and less optional and the results of failure more terrible. She’s stopped promising to always be with Caleb, and begun thinking about going back to Yeza and Luc - and has begun to see them not as distant people she loved in the past, and may see in the future, but part of her imminent future and present.

When Veth went to talk to Yeza before what happened in 129, it wasn’t clear to me if she actually wanted to go back to him, or had actually been considering calling for a “break” to whatever their relationship was, to make doing what she’s about to do feel easier. But nothing will hammer home how close and present your child is when he’s blown up and killed right in front of you. That relationship is now linked to his life and wellbeing and is suddenly the most important, urgent thing in Veth’s life.

She’s completed the journey from loving the Nein and wanting to be with them but feeling obligated to go back to her us and and son, to desperately wanting to be with her son and husband and feeling obligated to continue a dangerous mission with the M9. The adventure is now an obstacle to her being with her child. Caleb might be fried and unconscious on the ground but she’d step over him a thousand times to reach Luc. She didn’t spend a day talking about parenting, or guiltily spoiling Luc or fucking Yeza - she spent a day doing chemistry with her husband like she used to and spending precious time with her child - she even denied him excessive gifts in a world first for her.

I have a lot of feelings about it. I want the best for her but I also still want her to be curled up inside of Caleb’s grubby coat on the side of the road stealing trinkets and cracking cases with Jester and having little adventures with the M9 which didn’t threaten the world.

Recovery

“Y/N, you goddamn idiot bastard,” you mumbled quietly to yourself. You had been drilling battle protocols into your mind for weeks now. Fighters up front, Casters surrounded, Veth in the back . . . Unless of course Veth gets caught scouting; then its Veth retreats back, Fighters take point, Casters stay back. Argh! What even IS a caster? Fjord’s tossing eldritch blast after blast, isn’t that casting? And what if Caduceus or Jester decide to hit something in melee range of themselves. Have THEY suddenly taken on the role of a Fighter?

You go to throw up your hands in exasperation, only to feel a searing pain in your right side. Right, still recovering. It’s not very often that you have actually wait to recover from a battle. Normally Jester would proclaim the Traveler's love for you, or Caduceus would come to say a prayer as a fungus accelerated the healing process. The one time you royally screw up, the baddies are hot on the trail of producing a kind of poison that dispels divine-based healing magics. Well, good for them! They seemed to have achieved whatever it was they were doing.

"Crazed anti-divine alchemists plotting to overthrow clerical institutions," saying the words out loud, you mentally kick yourself. Of course, it's literally in the job description. Alchemists that hate gods. But really, how were you supposed to know they were actually talented in their craft? Bringing the news back to the Bright Queen, even she admitted that their concoctions were impressive, albeit disturbing.

Deciding that there's no real reason you could have deduced how far along their research had come, you close your eyes and replay the events of the last mission.

In the mountains, east of Rosohna, there were many ruins leftover from times of the betrayer gods. One of these was the Garden of the Ashen Skies; what once was a large castle keep was now just a few structures, seemingly covered in a thick layer of soot. It is unknown what purpose this keep served in the past, and for whom it was built. Now it lay scattered and broken, the ashes giving unique nutrients to all sorts of plant life, both magical and mundane.

"Caleb, we were all there when Essek gave us the rundown on where we were headed," Beauregard groaned through her double facepalm. Caleb looked up from his book with a vacant stare, adorned by a single raised eyebrow.

"Beauregard, YOU were the one who asked if we knew anything about this place," Caleb's face once again tilted down to peer at his notes.

"I MEANT do we know anything ELSE about this place other than what we were told by Essek. I just figured, you know, that it was like, IMPLIED. I do LISTEN you know," Beau was in full argument mode. You let out a stifled laugh and grin at Fjord, who was walking ahead with you, leading the group forward.

"Oh gods, they're going to be like this the whole way aren't they," you murmured to Fjord. He gave a slow nod with a soft smile, before saying,

"Ah yes, I forget sometimes that you've only been with us for a little while. They'll be over it within the hour I promise," he assured.

"Oh no, don't worry. I actually think it's quite charming," sneaking a peek back to see Beau's arms were up in the air now, Caleb's attention to his book unfaltering. "Sure there are arguments sprinkled with varying degrees of questionable morals, but other than that, I couldn't ask for a better family." you mimicked Fjord's warm smile.

"Well if you ask me, and I'm sure the others will agree, you're an excellent addition to the group. Your talents for smithing, rune-crafting, and most importantly-battle, have saved us more than a few times these past couple of weeks," his kind expression driving home the sentiment that, for the first time in a while, you genuinely feel wanted. The short string of compliments actually causes you to malfunction for a moment.

"I-uhh. Thank. Yeah cool, haha awesome," a verbal catastrophe followed by a literally stumble, your toe catching a nearby protrusion from the ground. As you hurtle towards the ground, you sum up your thoughts briefly, yet eloquently.

"Ah shit".

You're just about ready to become more acquainted with Xhorhasian soil when your momentum is cut short, and you are briefly clotheslined by your own scale-mail. Glancing back you see Fjord, shocked, and holding you up by the back of your armor.

"Whew! Thanks Fjord I-", you were cut short as you felt your weight shift back towards the ground. The last image you see before you faceplant is that of Fjord's shit-eating grin. Ohh motherfucker. As you lay face down in the trodden ground of the Xhorhasian marshes, the only sound you can focus on is that of Fjord's cackling.

"Oh gods Y/N, I'm so sorry, I couldn't help myself!" regaining your footing, you see now that he's doubled over, laughing himself silly. It's by now you realize that the rest of the Nein has joined the chorus of humorous cries.

"Fjord, you dick, that's not funny!" Jester said from behind Caleb and Beau. Although it was hard to agree with her since she was laughing too, and after all, it was pretty funny. Beau and Caleb had stopped their one-sided bickering, while Yasha and Veth could be seen both chuckling and shaking their heads respectively. As much as you wanted to be pissed, a wide smile crept across your face. After all, was this not how families treated each other?

"Here, how about I make it up to you?" Fjord reached out his hand to help you up.

"Haha I appreciate it-" WHUMP. You were back on your ass, and this time it was nearly impossible to tell anyone's laughs apart, including your own. You spot Caduceus joining the group, chuckling heavily and leaning on his staff for support, the humor of the situation catching up to him. After a more genuine apology and plenty more stifled giggles, Fjord finally took your hand and actually helped you up.

"You better believe I'll get you back for that," you say with a devious smirk.

"Oh, how will I sleep at night, knowing vengeance is ever creeping around the corner," he feigned a terrified expression, with his hands on the side of his face to complete the look.

"You better believe it's coming for you. Say, could you remind me how you feel about spiders? Oh, I could also have Jester message my dear friend Rose, you remember her right? The pale young woman with long black hair? If I do recall, she travels with a carnival as a contortionist," as you propose your plans to the half-orc, a more genuine unease spreads throughout his features.

"You wouldn't dare," he gasps. You boop him on the nose.

"Hey c'mon, chill out sea legs. I promise I'm just messing with you. . . or am I. . ." you let out an extremely exaggerated evil laugh.

The rest of the trip is carried through while the Mighty Nein shares stories of similar experiences to what you just went through. Of course, you're not without a few stories of your own. As the group trudges onwards, your spirits are lifted, and you feel it's possible that together, you all could take on any challenge.

You sigh a long-winded sigh. That whole ordeal started out so wholesome. The second-hand embarrassment is almost too much when you hear a knock on the door.

"It's Jester and Cadeucus, can we come in?" you hear the melodious voice of your horned friend through the door. They open the door to let themselves in, the question being more of courtesy rather than a genuine request. They wore worried expressions on their faces, and it dawns on you they must feel rather powerless at the moment. Jester wore a dark brown satchel on her hip, covered in an assortment of straps and buckles. The cluttered sound of glass vials and bottles fills the silence as she sets it down on your bedside table.

"Yeza has been working on an antidote from the notes of the alchemists, with Veth's help of course." her smile makes you feel like you could recover almost instantaneously, but her eyes gave away the truth of the situation.

"Unfortunately," she continued, "it's going to take a couple of, um, servings... of it to get the poison out of your system." That didn't surprise you, in fact, it was better than you had hoped. You figured you would have to endure an entirely natural recovery period, but you were blessed with the help of a talented alchemist after all. The recovery wasn't what you were most worried about at the moment.

"You're worried about Fjord aren't you?" Caduceus abruptly observed. Right, you can't hide anything from Cad.

"Is it written all over my face or something?" you joke, trying to keep the mood lighthearted.

"Survivor's guilt is a potent force in this life, but with enough time I'm sure he'll forgive himself.". You dignify his wisdom with a groan. You'd think that since you were the one that was infirmed, you'd be feeling the worst out of everyone. You suppose it was naive, the Mighty Nein's empathy, sympathy, and compassion truly knows no limit.

"So where is Fjord right now?" you prod, since the conversation was already on the subject.

"He's up on the roof praying to the Wildmother. He's gone up there every day for the past week ever since. . . the thing happened. He usually meditates for a couple of hours." a conflicted look of pride on Caduceus's face. It's good that Fjord was showing some dedication to his diety... albeit for perhaps the wrong reasons. In your mind he in no way needs to atone, after all, it was you who got yourself into this mess.

A few moments of silence pass.

"Soo... how am I going to be administered this antidote exactly?" Caduceus and Jester's faces light up.

"We made you tea!" Jester happy exclaims, bouncing up and down and clapping her hands together. Seemingly out of thin air, Caduceus produces a piping hot cup of tea, and you are once again thankful that these two are overseeing your recovery.

Having cleared out the first two chambers of the ruins, the party halts to let Veth scout ahead. The chamber you rest in has foliage coating the stone walls in the most beautiful and unique way. The leaves and stems of the plant life are a dull-ashen gray, while the petals and venation glow with the smolder of a burnt-out campfire. Contact with the flowers or ferns evokes the feeling of sticking your hand close to a blacksmith's forge, not enough to burn, but a unique sensation for sure when the source is vegetation.

"Do you think these plants are spicy?" Jester inquires to no one in particular, leaned in close to a charcoal-colored rose with fiery crimson petals.

"Well if not on the way in, I'm sure they do a lot of damage on the way out," Beau grins, "Yasha I dare you to eat one!". As Beau goes to pick the rose being inspected by Jester, a short plume of flame spurts from where the stem is severed.

"Yeah... how about we don't go eating the flaming death roses," Fjord proposes, his face palmed in his hand.

"I agree with Fjord on this one, although I wouldn't mind grabbing a few samples for Veth and Yeza to perhaps research. It could be useful in the future, should we encounter things like them," Caleb slowly procures a few specimens as he speaks. ---
