22 AUGUST— The eighth episode of the Base x Mnet competition show Crowned aired on August 21.

The eighth episode recapped major moments from the season. Buzzworthy stages were shown again, such as Titan’s first round stage of “Jealous” and Polaris’s second round stage of “Kill This Love” that earned them each number one rankings.

Equinox’s second round stage of “I’m Leaving You”, which is one of the most viewed performances from the show due to member KIANA’s shoe breaking, was also shown, along with Equinox’s SUJI and Candy’s YERIN’s “Flashlight” stage, which earned love due to the pair’s friendship dynamic during rehearsals.

Calypso member YENNY was highlighted as the much-loved ‘reaction fairy’ of the season and some favorite reaction moments were shown, as well as a few new, unseen clips. Time was also dedicated to recapping Titan’s DURI’s MVP win in the first round and previously unseen clips of the special judges being endeared to him were shown.

Another idol that earned a lot of reactions from audiences was Equinox member MINJUNG, for her extremely competitive commentary, especially early in the show. A few of these scenes that earned the biggest reaction also earned a recap.

Selene’s HYOJUNG’s injury and the subsequent outpouring of support were re-visited, showing the side of Crowned that brought fans together.

The last individual highlighted was Candy’s SUN, who has recently been racking up impressive views on her individual fancam from Candy’s “Ddu-Du Ddu-Du” performance in round two. The episode took time to highlight her charms in her individual fancam.

A few more scenes were shown of friendships being formed and heartwarming interactions between members of different groups.

The episode ended with a reminder to check out the final round songs, released onto streaming sites shortly before the airing of this episode.

Sometimes you can really tell that people here will argue only from their First World POV, specially in regards to piracy.

Let's take books for example:

"You can get them in your library!"

Nope, not how it works here. Either the publisher has to get the rights and make an effort to distribute and the libraries consider it a good enough profit to put it on sale or the author has to do all that work by themselves. Luckily localization has become easier with time but even then that doesn't cover small and indie authors. And this applies to big franchise libraries like Ateneo or Yenny, do you think a local small library can afford all of that?

"You can request that books be added!"

Again, not how it works. If a library considers a book profitable they will sell it. You can ask if they have a book and they'll tell you if they do or don't and if MAYBE they'll have it and in most cases this, again, does not cover indie authors. You could make a movement to ask for copies of a book and or works of an author but that would be a whole lot of work for yourself and many others and they might still not take it.

"You can wait for them to restock"

That's true, I have tried that. It takes between three months and never because they deem it not profitable anymore and not worth selling anymore but they won't tell you if you ask.

"You can ask the author themselves to sell it to you or make some kind of deal"

Okay, let's consider first that this direct approach requieres for someone to be: 1)fluent enough in the author's native language to communicate with them, 2)for the author to have the time to actually negotiate with everyone that asks and 3)That that copy will not be in my own language and again I would need to be fluent in at least one language that isn't mine, specially because I'm assuming you're talking about USA authors and, this might be a shock to you, not everyone speaks English. And second, you might have nothing to offer as a bargain because you're not a reviewer and have no platform to speak of because why would you need to be an influencer to get a fucking book? So you're stuck with paying for the book full cost AND shipping which is fucking expensive. You could argue that the author might be willing to pay for the shipping out of their own pocket but not only does this mean a loss for them sometimes shipping depending on the country can be as expensive as the book itself therefore in this scenario there's no profit for the author, but also in some countries they will tax you for a book when it gets there even without shipping so one way or another you are paying more for it.

"But they could email you a pdf of the book"

Okay, let's consider again that this means still needing to go through all the work AND the copy might not be available in a language I can understand, we finally get to the crux of the topic and the main reason I wanted to make this post. Do you have ANY idea with what kind of economy we're dealing with? I'm not asking you to be an expert, I'm asking you to consider that you live IN THE RICHEST FUCKING COUNTRY IN THE WORLD. I don't care how bad the economy is there right now how bad do you think people in a third world country have it? Argentina's been having an inflation of over 40% for the past 8 years do you even know how many pesos is a dollar? No, you don't, here it is: 1 dollar=208 pesos. This will be absolutely obsolete by next week not yo mention a couple of months or years. And this is one kind of dollar, our economy is in such shambles that we have five different changes for dollars here. Do you think I have the money to buy that many books? Thank God resources like book depository exist where you can easily buy and be confident the book will get there but it's still full price and still only in English, and again still not a library here.

I am sorry for the situation of authors and indie authors in particular I really am, the way things are now they can barely make a scent and it shouldn't be that way. But also, as much as this may be a shock to you, the world does not revolve around the USA and if I want to read the books I want to read I have to either flip a coin with many libraries here and HOPE they have it or I pirate it, because if I can't then I can't read it.

Hauppauge, Winter 2015.

The new year was two weeks in when Yenny called. She’s leaving for Lima in February to see her family. Once again, she’s enlisted me to house sit. Unlike the other times I traveled back and forth to Huntington to stay for the night after work, she’s asked for me to stay for two weeks. I heartily obliged. Two weeks away from the daily drama, intrusion, and toxicity at home? “Yes” all across the board, five-in-a-row. The day before arrival, she called again to put me to it. I packed up my clothes and Gateway laptop for a rare getaway at Yenny’s new apartment residency of peace and zen. I don’t take vacations or time off of any kind, but when someone asks you to take time away from your normal residency for you to do you, you better fucking do it.

And fucking do it, I did. For two weeks in February I had total serenity. Living in Lindenhurst for the year meant having a second-floor bedroom above the neighborhood and the golden summer sun shining through an adjacent window - at the cost of living with a agitated father who’d yell personal complaints at you every time something went wrong. Yenny’s apartment was also on the second floor, overlooking the school district across the street. No summer, but heavy slurring snowstorms with single-digit temperatures and stinging cold air battered the island.

It’s 3PM Sunday and I arrive at her place. Yenny and her ma’ have their luggage ready and are scrambling to see what else they’ve needed to pack. Their Spanish was running just as fast. She’s a little frazzled to beat the last-minute notions of packing up but had a few to show me wherever everything was and go over the daily itinerary. All I had to do was keep everything clean.

“Wipe up after yourself each and every time. Take care of Bella. Let her out to roam free in the living room, clean her cage, replace her litter, fill her water bottle, add her food pellets, handle her and take her back in her cage. Lock her up and feed her the tangy vitamin paste. And do it twice a day. There’s food, cookies, and candy in the cabinets, juice and soda in the fridge, and meat in the freezer. I also have a calling card. Call me at Lima if anything.” Yenny was stern and on point; sharp as an arrow tearing into its’ destination at the center. Her finger-waving game never left my direction and she had the right. She was a neatness freak with O.C.D. who made sure everything was perfect and to a double-tee. Now that the final toothbrush was packed up, they were ready to catch the 5PM flight to the capital. Yenny and her ma’ quickly said their goodbyes to me and walk out the front door. Hauppauge starts now.

The next two weeks of life was bliss. I was out of my dad’s crosshairs. There was no labyrinth of verbal abuse, blames games, complaining, or dealing with his laziness. The aggravating interactions of yelling, screaming, or wasting my time and energy trying to reason with an old-world Brookynite Italian whose mind is far beyond any attempt at learning? Nil. It was a rarity to have any sanity away from home and outside of work. I felt I had all the time in the world to catch up on posting and piece together the next Omega WUSB broadcast. Every day I hammered a few out of the park. Then I had this idea as the gears were going full steam; an idea that would add more work and keep me busy. I decided to open up an Omega WUSB Mixcloud. I rifled through all of my playlists, re-organized my seasonal finds, edited them through Audacity, made the artwork, and viola! The first few uploads went up. It was a fun project to start on and was curious to see if it would take off. I had nothing to lose.

My Mitsubishi back home was in disrepair at the moment, but Yenny thought I was responsible enough to let me borrow her white Honda to-and-from work. To drive out to Stony Brook to do my radio show? During a heavy blizzard? Nada. Work was a necessity but leisure wasn’t. I had no outs in leaving her apartment for any other reason except for my shifts and food shopping. Valentine’s Day fell on a Saturday but I wasn’t planning on having some sappy, gooey theme for my show. Just a God-honest broadcast of distorted Los Angeles dissonance, indie city sounds, obscure British prog-, noise rock, Japanese tape-recorder acts, blast-off garage and hard-to-find noise that I’ll never forget for as long as I breathe. I pieced it altogether, edited down, converted it, and loaded it into the cloud. Aphrodite, then WUSB program-director, was snowed in at the station and had her show before mine. I dialed the studio and she picked up so I could hear her stuffy mellowed-out voice. I told her I wasn’t going to make it in as my ex- tied my hands up with her car and a blustery snowstorm with 30 miles-an-hour winds. “Sure! Send it in” said Aphrodite. By 10PM, Omega WUSB’s non-Valentine’s Day broadcast went live.

Nights felt forever if I didn’t have work the next day. If I wasn’t posting or editing, I was spending it watching concert footage and the Rangers with Cam Talbot goaltending because Henrik Lundqvist was out with a life-threatening neck injury. If I wasn’t doing either, I’d walk to the supermarket and Chinese restaurant which was only down the street. At times I didn’t want to risk denting Yenny’s Honda, so I walked a half-mile trek from her residence to Shop-Rite where one of my better food-service customers recognized me shopping for produce. We spoke for a good ten minutes when, during that time, his jolly self offered me a position in his department. It was nice of him to do so though he was unaware that I was let go from his competitor, and I had more than enough trouble living a day-to-day life of being a former shell of myself in a post-university world.

It’s the Saturday before Yenny and her ma’ comes home. Look who’s knocking on the door? It’s Dad showing up uninvited. Somehow he remembered the directions from our house in Lindenhurst to Yenny’s apartment. Was he here to fight or argue with me again about trivial matters? No. He hasn’t seen or spoken to me in almost two weeks. He missed me, so he wanted to sweeten the deal and take me to the closest buffet we could find. The one thing with Italians, and especially him, is that they’re very passionate with food. Dad woud pump me with everything he could think of with late-night half-eaten steak, burgers, soggy fries, greasy egg rolls, and sushi platters. “O.K., sure” I said. We sat silently from opposite sides of the table as we both slowly gorged on tuna rolls, greasy beef with vegetables, chow mein, pork tips, three types of chicken, green beans, and stir-fry until we passed out in exhaustion. And I say ‘silently’ because I want absolutely no one speaking to me as I’m eating. Our discounted afternoon meal-time was over and he drove me back to Yenny’s where I would spend my final whole day there.

I’d have one more Sunday afternoon to do the good gesture and fill up the tank on Yenny’s Honda. It wouldn’t be right to use her ride and have her come home to an empty tank like some careless despicable animal. The weather was a chilly greyscale and rainy, head barely above freezing. I gather all of my clothes and haul it to the complex’s basement laundry room to spend two hours staring at the wall’s grey-peeled paint ripped open to reveal sandy cinder blocks. The second and final load was hot to a warm crisp to be thrown into a tattered laundry bag with the rest of them. I hauled it over my shoulder, up the stairs, and another 100 feet back to her residence to get one more cleaning of the cage and one final feeding of her pet weasel.

I hear the engine humming outside. Yenny and her ma’ have arrived each in one piece and happy to be finally home. I run out to greet them and offer to unload their luggage from Yenny’s fiancee’s car. All that’s done. Yenny, her ma’ and I all sit around about their Lima visit until my dad finally arrived to pick me up. We all say good-bye for now with Yenny promising to reward me for keeping everything up as they left it. I take my backpack, my laundry haul, and my laptop and loaded it in my dad’s Chrysler. I knew he would ask me twenty questions about everything that could easily be figured out with little imagination but I was in no mood to explain anything to anyone. I just wanted to enjoy the ride back to Lindenhurst where domestic tension and aggression would resume once again.

8 AUGUST— The sixth episode of the Base x Mnet competition show CROWNED aired on August 7.

The episode started with a short recap of the unit stages from last episode before jumping into the full group second round stages.

As the group ranking last and second to last in the first round rankings, Catalyst and Candy performed first. They were grouped in the edit, with rehearsal clips of Catalyst shown, and then rehearsal clips of Candy. Both groups were required to switch their songs halfway through rehearsals and their reactions to the news as they were informed at the time of ranking announcement was shown. One scene of Candy showed members YERIN and SUN taking a break from practice to converse about their feelings toward the upcoming stage. Catalyst’s performance was shown first, with their performance of Polaris’s “Dionysus”. Candy then performed their rendition of “Ddu-Du Ddu-Du”. Candy’s performance was followed by a reflection from SUN: “Our members worked particularly hard this round, so coming together to this performance without any major hiccups is a feat by itself. I hope all of the members are proud of themselves. I’m trying my best to be proud of myself as well,” and then praise from original Ddu-Du Ddu-Du singer Ultraviolet’s JAEIN ( “I think that they really sprinkled it with Candy’s usual charms.”).

The next segment of performances was framed as seniors versus juniors and covered rehearsals for Lily, Andromeda, Selene, and Ultraviolet, who just escaped punishment by ranking in the mid-to-low range last round. Lily’s rehearsals were juxtaposed with Andromeda’s as both groups pulled cards requiring them to cover a song released before 2010 while Selene’s were juxtaposed with Ultraviolet’s. Lily’s stage of “U Go Girl” was introduced by a talking head of YURI (“We practiced quite hard and lost out on quite a bit of sleep just to perfect our stage.”) and led out by praise from Selene’s MIRAE (“Lily had the most complete stage and concept. Each piece fit together without feeling too contrived.”) then Andromeda’s cover of “Listen To My Word (A-ing)” followed.

Selene suffered a setback during rehearsals when member HYOJUNG fainted. One of Selene’s manager was shown explaining the situation and that Hyojung had to miss two of Selene’s rehearsals. When she came back, Hyojung’s work ethic was shown as she immediately jumped into asking fellow member MIRAE to help her catch up. Both members shared their thoughts on the situation via talking head (Hyojung: “While I did my best to catch up to everything my members had been working on, I regret not being able to take care of myself well enough.” / Mirae: “Hyojung is our youngest so we’re all worried about her.”) Their stage of Cloud’s “Very Nice” was then shown to go off without any further major complications.

From Gold Star Media’s most senior group to their most junior, Ultraviolet was shown getting through rehearsals without any similar health problems. Their stage of yet another labelmate, Catalyst’s song “Kick It” was the next one shown. Member JAEIN gave her own commentary on their performance (“I think we did a nice job! I’m feeling better about this one than the last because I think this does a better job representing what Ultraviolet’s sound really is even if it wasn’t our song.”)

Quantum/phase and Equinox were the next groups shown as they placed in the middle of the pack. Quantum/phase covered Titan’s “Be Mine”, while Equinox were the third group to pull a twist card requiring them to cover a song released before 2010. Quantum/phase’s performance went off without a hitch and earned praise from Candy’s SUN (“They’re able to create a beautifully theatrical performance in any setting, with just minimal props and their unique style. I’m a big fan of well constructed concepts.”), but during Equinox’s stage of “I’m Leaving You”, member KIANA was shown stumbling and having a surprised expression mid-performance. After different angles of the moment were replayed, it was revealed her shoe had broken. Kiana’s thoughts on the moment (“I feel as if that incident has impacted not only myself, but the group’s overall performance. As a professional, I could have done better to hide it.”) interrupted the performance before the rest of it was shown.

Calypso, Cloud, and Platinum were the high-mid range rankers and they got the second to last segment of the episode. Calypso pulled a card allowing them to choose any song by one of the other groups to cover and this resulted in a performance of Selene’s “Hush”. Member YENNY commented on her hopes for the stage (“With this stage specifically, especially since we chose the song, it was more important than ever that we did right by the original artist. I hope they enjoyed our stage just as much as we did.”) LUX echoed the same sentiment (“I hope at the very least we make Selene proud.”). Selene member HYOJUNG was shown as the answer to their hopes after Calypso’s stage (“I think they were great.”). Cloud also covered a Selene song, “Décalcomanie”. Platinum took on a more laidback version of Lily’s “Nobody”.

Polaris and Titan were the second and first ranking groups respectively and the tension raised as their stages approached. Both groups got to pre-record their stages in front of an audience of their own fans. Polaris did a dramatic rendition of Ultraviolet’s “Kill This Love” which was met with an impressed reaction from Calypso’s LUX ( “Their performance was stunning. Theatrical, dark, and absolutely gorgeous.”) while Titan did Polaris’s own “Fire”. member DURI wrapped Titan’s segment with his thoughts (“We showed something completely different when it comes to ‘Fire’. We had a strong performance and everything came together well!”).

A short final segment was shown of fans being polled leaving the filming about who their favorite performance was before a brief recap of all stages was shown along with information on how to vote for the second round.

Newsletter #15: January 2024

Dear RNAs,

Is it too late for me to wish you a happy new year? 2023 has been a wild ride for (you and) me because a lot of things happened. Here’s a quick recap before we totally move on to the next year!

2023 RECAP

I don’t even know where to begin. All I know is that 2023 was a fruitful year for me as a creative. I was able to share with you six new stories of love, friendships, and life.

Last year, it was finally time for me to share some secrets with you through the story of Erica and Trey in Secrets We Can’t Keep. After finding out their big secret, we continued to solve some problems that Lara and Alvin we’re having in Problems We Can’t Solve. Later on, we joined Margaux and Cash in finding out whether they were able to reach their dreams in Dreams We Can’t Reach.

This was also the year wherein we slowed down and enjoyed the mundane things in life like commuting. We enjoyed the ride as we commuted to Project Fate with Tanya and Tep. We also learned the basics of commuting in Commuting for Dummies with Isaac and Clara. Lastly, we enjoyed every Crush Hour despite the heavy traffic with George and Bridgit.

Aside from these, I attempted to write a ficlet per week this 2023 but I wasn’t able to finish this challenge. However, it produced 24 ficlets. I’ve written additional two ficlets for Inkspired Inktober, which is another writing challenge that I haven’t finished.

My goal last year was to be consistent in my story updates, which I was able to accomplish since I have updated every Monday last 2023. It became a routine for me to post something new in Wattpad.

I was given the opportunity to be a part of Miss Yennie’s (halfbakedwriter) Writer Tell-All Space as a guest writer. It was a joy for me to share my thoughts and journey as a writer with my fellow creatives. At the same time, it’s a privilege for me to receive some wisdom they have acquired through the years of writing experience they had.

But 2023 does not stop there. This was also the year where new opportunities opened for me. I never imagined myself to be able to publish a book last year but KPub PH allowed that dream I once had when I was a child to come true in the form of Ardor, a collection of short stories about love. Unbelievable! I cannot believe I had my first book signing event last year. What a miracle it has been!

This 2023, our family has grown to 669 followers in Wattpad. And finally, here’s a quick recap to show the growth of my stories. Thank you to everyone who has read (and read again) and supported my stories in many ways. I don’t think I say this enough but know that I read every comment and message you send.

2024 WRITING GOALS

As I have promised since the beginning, I will continue to share stories to the world as long as I have stories to tell. This 2024, my desire is to continue to write stories that would bring life to those who would consume it. Content all over the Internet may not always be good, but as a creative, I want to put out content that would inspire you, make you think critically, educate you about things you may not know yet, or simply just make you feel things.

As a creative, I admit that I also have comfort zones. There may be themes that I simply am afraid to explore because I doubt my audience would enjoy such things. This year, I’m looking forward to stepping out of my comfort zones by exploring new themes to write, expanding my creative platforms outside of Wattpad, and making myself a little bit more vulnerable to my readers to show that I am a human as well.

Last year was all about consistency because I wanted to prove to myself (and maybe to my readers) that I could post regularly. I may have been successful in one way but I also had to learn the rhythm of creating and resting. If I hustled every single time, I’m afraid I would end up in a creative burnout and it’s the last thing that I want to happen to me. That’s why I’m hoping to find the right rhythm for me between creating and resting. I hope that you do the same. Rest is a precious gift. Please find time for it.

Lastly, I know that I wouldn’t be where I am right now without the readers who kept on supporting every little thing that I put out there online. I believe that there’s a human behind every user that I interact with. You, guys, have a story to tell too! And if you’ll let me, I want to know your stories as well. Aside from the group chat and channels I have in Telegram, I really want to have conversations with you.

WRITING PROJECTS

Before I end this newsletter, let me update you about my writing projects this year. Currently, I’m writing five works-in-progress: 1) License to Lab, 2) Ana & Tomi Part One, 3) Pitik Mata, 4) Bad for the Heart, and 5) NLEX: Ang Huling Biyahe.

License to Lab is the fifth installment of MedTech on Duty. It features a medical laboratory technician who has failed his board exams thrice and tries to take it once again. I’ve been writing this since 2022 and I’m working to finish this already because I want to share this story already. But yes, I’m taking my sweet, sweet time to write this one because I don’t really want to compromise the message that I want to tell for the sake of publishing it immediately. Instead, here’s a little quote that I’m offering for now:

“Is it even possible for hope to be transmitted by just staring into the eyes of the person who believes in you the most?”

Ana & Tomi Part One is the first installment of MedTech on Duty. It narrates the college misadventures of the titular characters—Ana and Tomi. I’m exploring themes of platonic soulmates and found family here, so this should be exciting! This story also allows me to reminisce about my undergraduate years in Medical Technology.

“But what if during the bad times, I don’t even have a single person I can run to? Can’t I really survive college alone?”

For my love of novelette trilogies, I started writing Pitik Mata, which is a three-part series that features a trio of friends who go on a venture of rediscovering their passion in photography. I will be pouring a lot of the things I love in this WIP, such as photography, creatives, and trio friendships.

“Ano kaya ang nakikita niya sa lente ng camera niya? Nakikita niya kaya kung paano ko siya tingnan?”

For those who loved You Make Me Sick, I’m sure this WIP will excite you. Bad for the Heart is written in the same universe as YMMS, focusing on the things that may be dangerous for the heart. We’re going to talk about the heart a lot here.

“It’s fascinating how the heart may be the strongest yet the most fragile organ of the body. From the moment you are formed in your mother’s womb up to your final breath, your heart beats so you would live. It never takes a break. For if it does, you will die.”

Lastly, we’re going on a road trip to NLEX: Ang Huling Biyahe with my new beloved quad! This focuses on four friends who love a good road trip away from the busy city but need to part ways at the end.

“And that was her little assurance. That despite every change and transition that is happening in their lives, they will always have NLEX. They will always come back to the place where it all began.”

That’s a total of five WIPs, but please understand that I won’t be able to publish immediately since I’m currently studying for my board exams. Writing stories will forever be precious in my heart but it is also a part of my dream to work in the laboratory. I may not be as active as before, but I will try to come back every now and then to check up on everyone. Until then, I’m going to write offline for a while.
