Sometimes you can really tell that people here will argue only from their First World POV, specially in regards to piracy.
Let's take books for example:
"You can get them in your library!"
Nope, not how it works here. Either the publisher has to get the rights and make an effort to distribute and the libraries consider it a good enough profit to put it on sale or the author has to do all that work by themselves. Luckily localization has become easier with time but even then that doesn't cover small and indie authors. And this applies to big franchise libraries like Ateneo or Yenny, do you think a local small library can afford all of that?
"You can request that books be added!"
Again, not how it works. If a library considers a book profitable they will sell it. You can ask if they have a book and they'll tell you if they do or don't and if MAYBE they'll have it and in most cases this, again, does not cover indie authors. You could make a movement to ask for copies of a book and or works of an author but that would be a whole lot of work for yourself and many others and they might still not take it.
"You can wait for them to restock"
That's true, I have tried that. It takes between three months and never because they deem it not profitable anymore and not worth selling anymore but they won't tell you if you ask.
"You can ask the author themselves to sell it to you or make some kind of deal"
Okay, let's consider first that this direct approach requieres for someone to be: 1)fluent enough in the author's native language to communicate with them, 2)for the author to have the time to actually negotiate with everyone that asks and 3)That that copy will not be in my own language and again I would need to be fluent in at least one language that isn't mine, specially because I'm assuming you're talking about USA authors and, this might be a shock to you, not everyone speaks English. And second, you might have nothing to offer as a bargain because you're not a reviewer and have no platform to speak of because why would you need to be an influencer to get a fucking book? So you're stuck with paying for the book full cost AND shipping which is fucking expensive. You could argue that the author might be willing to pay for the shipping out of their own pocket but not only does this mean a loss for them sometimes shipping depending on the country can be as expensive as the book itself therefore in this scenario there's no profit for the author, but also in some countries they will tax you for a book when it gets there even without shipping so one way or another you are paying more for it.
"But they could email you a pdf of the book"
Okay, let's consider again that this means still needing to go through all the work AND the copy might not be available in a language I can understand, we finally get to the crux of the topic and the main reason I wanted to make this post. Do you have ANY idea with what kind of economy we're dealing with? I'm not asking you to be an expert, I'm asking you to consider that you live IN THE RICHEST FUCKING COUNTRY IN THE WORLD. I don't care how bad the economy is there right now how bad do you think people in a third world country have it? Argentina's been having an inflation of over 40% for the past 8 years do you even know how many pesos is a dollar? No, you don't, here it is: 1 dollar=208 pesos. This will be absolutely obsolete by next week not yo mention a couple of months or years. And this is one kind of dollar, our economy is in such shambles that we have five different changes for dollars here. Do you think I have the money to buy that many books? Thank God resources like book depository exist where you can easily buy and be confident the book will get there but it's still full price and still only in English, and again still not a library here.
I am sorry for the situation of authors and indie authors in particular I really am, the way things are now they can barely make a scent and it shouldn't be that way. But also, as much as this may be a shock to you, the world does not revolve around the USA and if I want to read the books I want to read I have to either flip a coin with many libraries here and HOPE they have it or I pirate it, because if I can't then I can't read it.

US, Brazil seize 272 websites used to illegally download music
Tumblr media
The domains of six websites that streamed and provided illegal downloads of copyrighted music were seized by U.S. Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) and the Department of Justice.
266 other websites part of the same network were also taken down in Brazil, with six individuals arrested in 30 search and seizure raids across the country.
"According to court documents, law enforcement identified these six domains as being used to distribute copyrighted material without the authorization of the copyright holders," the Justice Department said today in a press release.
"A law enforcement investigation confirmed that copyright-protected music content was present and available for streaming or downloading on each of these six websites from the Eastern District of Virginia.
The six domains seized in the US (Corourbanos.com, Corourbano.com, Pautamp3.com, SIMP3.com, flowactivo.co, and Mp3Teca.ws) were registered with US-based registrars and were taken down following a joint investigation with Brazilian authorities dubbed Operation 404.4.
The websites were advertised on social media to attract users willing to download and stream the illegal music content they provided. Brazilian authorities also requested and took down 15 social network profiles used for promotion purposes.

The Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) has designated 13 topics that brands should avoid associating themselves with to maintain brand safety. Those are: military conflict, obscenity, drugs, tobacco, adult content, arms, crime, death/injury, online piracy, hate speech, terrorism, spam, and fake news.
-the online marketing course I'm taking
ok they seriously put online piracy in the same no-no category as terrrrism and porn.

Person: hello, is that library with one of each book?
Owner: yes! Although I should warn you, it’s technically illegal to borrow books here.
Person: oh my! Are you like. a meth front?
Owner: no, that isn’t why.
Person: oh I get it, are the books banned?
Owner: not at all, they’re the same ones you can find anywhere else, and even some that you can’t simply because they’re old and hard to find copies of.
Person: so, um, did you steal them?
Owner: no, I bought each book from the big golden bookstore couple blocks down.
Person: then, may I ask, why is it illegal?
Owner: well, the bookstore that makes the books would rather every person that borrows one of my books buy that book from their bookstore, because they would make more money. Not to say that they don’t make enough, they have more money than you could count out loud in centuries. Or they’d regather you pay them to come to one of their paid readings. Or to buy one of their bookshelves which magically changes each book into a random different one, but every second page has a leaflet tucked in. That reminds me, there might be a couple leaflets on some of the tables, sorry. But if you’d prefer to enjoy it legally, the bookstore recently opened their own private library that you have to pay continuously to be a member of. Luckily, they don’t have enough resources to shut down all other libraries, so as long as you aren’t stupid about it you’ll prolly be fine. So, you coming in?

This is a really clarifying take on what happened with Sports Illustrated:
And look, things change. Cultural institutions evolve, fade, die out. Not every magazine needs to exist forever. But it is a bummer when an otherwise popular, viable, even beloved cultural institution is killed off — while there’s a team that’s working overtime at the helm that wants to keep the lights on — because a Wall Street firm or an adventuring licensing company can increase earnings at the margins by cutting out its heart.
The tragedy of AI is not that it stands to replace good journalists but that it takes every gross, callous move made by management to degrade the production of content — and promises to accelerate it.
Back when I worked at a talent agency in Hollywood, we represented a lot of journalists from what were then A-list publications because their feature writing was so vivid and immersive their work would regularly become the basis of screenplays. There would be bidding wars over the rights to the articles.
My boss would toss a copy of SI to me and tell me to read a flagged article and tell him if I thought it would make a good movie.
Those stories were so incredibly good, it was the highlight of my day.
That level of writing is still out there - I know it is - but once we started to think of it as 'content' instead of journalism or writing, and we raised an entire generation to expect that this kind of artistry and work should be available to them online for free in exchange for their clicks alone, we really, really lost something.
Anyhow, that's my soapbox.

i fully believe piracy could improve online services. EXPONENTIALLY.
listen. listen. how many times do we use websites we DONT LIKE to acquire a certain asset because we think theres no other options? A FUCKIN LOT
BUT! piracy becomes wider spread. COMPANIES are thrown off their high horses, being forced to work + do better to gain attention, because why would we even need them anymore? we've got piracy.
trying to raise prices needlessly? NOPE. trying to lower quality of products? NOPE. (etc. etc. because i'm too sleepy to expand more rn)
anyways. fuck establishment. fuck capitalism. good ngight

Brazil’s New IPTV Anti-Piracy Blocking Plan Prepares to Bypass Judiciary
Tumblr media
As anti-piracy measures gather pace around the world, rightsholders are pushing the message that court involvement is unnecessary and only introduces unwanted delays. Administrative blocking programs are now considered the gold standard so as Brazil seeks to shake off its IPTV piracy problems, powerful agencies are preparing to follow the playbook.

i often do forgot and am subsequently struck by the fact that Stede Bonnet and Edward Teach were like. Real historical people
and now when you google them the first thing that comes up is a show that’s essentially a fanfiction of them falling in love. that’s their legacy now.
the historical Stede and Edward would probably fucking hate that and honestly that makes it so much better

...I will say, as much of a sucker as I am for buying the Nintendo Switch Online Expand Dong Pack so I could play Banjo-Kazooie on the john, even though emulation is both free and more robust/varied, the fact I decided to do so for pure convenience really does show that Gaben was right about piracy.
