Yaz could feel her entire insides melt at the praise. She had no doubt in her mind he meant every word.

“Thanks, thought I’d try something different.”

“Date tonight?” he asked.

She shook her head. “No, just felt like dressing up a bit.”

“Oh that’s good.”

Yaz blinked, taken aback by the slight hint of relief in his tone.

Steve seemed to catch on as his whole body froze.

“Not that it’s good that you don’t have a date,” he said quickly. “I mean that it’s good you decided to do something nice, you know, for yourself. i think we’ve talked once or twice about the boys reactions to angel getting hurt, but usually she’s with at least one boy.

now-

what happens if angel gets hurt with none of the boys around?

it’s just a sprained ankle, that’s what she’s telling herself as she’s putting all of her weight onto yasmin when she’s helping her to the car. it’s just a sprained ankle, is what she’s telling herself as she’s being wheeled back for an x-ray. it’s just a sprained ankle, she thinks solemnly as they ask what color she wanted for her cast for her broken leg.

it happens on a friday which she’s thankful for because she gets two days to try and figure out her crutches. she doesn’t tell any of the boys, which she knows she should because how was she going to explain canceling her trip to jersey the coming weekend, but she’s good at hiding it.

well, until she sends jack a snapchat of her sparkly, new face mask and when he opens it, she gets the notification that he’d replayed it. and then he screenshots it, which… what?

he doesn’t respond for a few minutes until her phone lights up with a call. she answers with a confused look, “why did you screenshot- luke?”

“why are there crutches beside your bed?” jack questions and her eyes go wide. she’s ready to deny, but they both send her a look, “i can see them, angel.”

and her eyes drift down to the little box in the corner and, fuck, you could see her crutches, “i- they’re my friend’s?”

“your friend left their crutches right beside your bed?” luke looks unamused as he speaks and she frowns, “are you hurt?”

“i may have broken my leg…” she trails off as they both start talking over her, letting out varying strings of curses and questions, “but it’s okay!”

“okay? you broke your leg and you didn’t tell us!” jack exclaims, “is that why you didn’t answer my call earlier?”

“no it- uh, it happened on friday-”

“friday!” they exclaim in sync and she frowns.

“i just didn’t want you all to worry. you all get so mother hen about me and really, i’m fine now! i’ve learned how to use my crutches and i’m getting to classes okay, so really it’s no big deal.”

“no big deal? it’s a broken leg, angel,” luke sighs, “what if you had to have surgery?”

“but i didn’t.”

“oh good-”

'It should come as no surprise that Russell T Davies, the man behind Queer As Folk, the one who first made Doctor Who tangibly gay, has returned to the franchise with what might be its queerest outing yet. But even we were surprised by quite how integral LGBTQ+ themes would be to the story this time around.

Much has been made of David Tennant and Catherine Tate's return, yet it's Yasmin Finney's brand-new character Rose who's at the heart of this Star Beast special.

Donna's daughter befriends The Meep first, and she's also the one who saves London when The Meep reveals itself to be evil. What's special about this is that it's Rose's trans identity specifically that proves key to her victory.

When we last saw her mother, Donna had absorbed some of the Doctor's energy, creating a 'metacrisis' that would have killed her if the Doctor had not erased her memories. But when she's reminded again of the Time Lord's existence in this latest episode, Donna survives intact, and that's because when she gave birth to Rose, she unknowingly split that energy between them, halving their potentially devastating impact.

As Donna's memories return, Rose's innate Timelord energy is then activated too, enabling her to stop Meep with newfound knowledge and abilities from her position on the ground.

Rose's non-binary identity stems from The Doctor's. (The show finally acknowledges them to be gender-fluid after they presented as both male and female over the course of the franchise). That means the source of Rose's power comes directly from her nature as a non-binary individual, positioning her as a hero because of her gender identity and not despite of it.

That's not to say Doctor Who shies away from the difficulties trans people face in real life. Earlier on in the same episode, bullies deadname Rose in the street and soon after, Donna's own mother, Sylvia, accidentally misgenders Rose as well, despite her good intentions.

Donna's response to all this? "I would burn down the world for you, darling," and honestly, that's how we feel after seeing some of the negative feedback these scenes have received online.

Despite scoring strong reviews from critics and the majority of fans, it seems not everyone is celebrating Doctor Who's much-lauded return.

On Rotten Tomatoes, trolls are review-bombing the episode, bringing the audience score down to 41%, which is a huge contrast from the critics rating of 89%. Of course, everyone is entitled to their own opinion and the episode won't be to everyone's tastes, but when comments suggest the show 'needs to stop pushing talk of pronouns onto kids', it's safe to say most of these opinions are grounded in hate and ignorance.

Imagine being shocked that a show about an alien who regularly changes their body and gender would dare acknowledge such concepts?

In the days following the special, a hashtag named #RIPDoctorWho continued this backlash on X/Twitter, to which Doctor Who casting director Andy Pryor said the following:

"Just stopped by to say that on @bbcdoctor who (or any of our work) we don't work hard to cast inclusively for publicity. We do it because we like stories. & stories should speak to all of us & include all of us. And if one person feels a little less alone, then."

With more queer cast members on the way, including Neil Patrick Harris as the villainous Toymaker and Ncuti Gatwa as the new face of The Doctor himself, the future of Doctor Who is looking queerer by the day.

But it's not just the future that's queer.

To those who baulk at more inclusivity in future seasons, we can't help but wonder: What show have you been watching this whole time? Because Doctor Who is super queer — and it always has been.

Yes, even before Jack Harkness slapped a guy's arse or Bill Potts fell for a puddle named Heather, the Classic era channeled queerness with how it defied the establishment and stood up for those who need it most. It's hard to exaggerate how much stories like this resonated with LGBTQ+ people at a time when positive representation was almost non-existent on screen.

It's no wonder then that a sizeable chunk of Doctor Who's fandom identifies as queer, even if the show wasn't able to address LGBTQ+ fans directly until (queer lifelong fan) Russell T Davies regenerated the franchise in 2005.

But now, all these years later, The Star Beast ushers in a new chapter for Doctor Who where the show can finally live up to the inclusive ethos it's always striven for.

That's not to diminish the positive steps other showrunners have taken in the interim. 2015's 'Sleep No More' featured Doctor Who's first trans actress, Bethany Black, and season twelve's 'Praxeus' successfully flipped the 'Bury Your Gays' trope, although the less said about how season 13 handled #Thasmin the better.

And it's not like everything is suddenly perfect now. Rose's metacrisis abilities could feed into sci-fi tropes around trans/non-binary identities being considered "alien", plus the inclusion of Rose's deadname has garnered a mixed response from the trans community online.

While some argue this has given trolls the opportunity to use that name venomously against her character, others point out that transphobia is a reality the show shouldn't shy away from.

The moment when Rose calls the Doctor out for assuming Meep's pronouns might feel a bit-on-the-nose for some too, although if this kind of talk immediately heralds the end of the franchise for you, you might want to cast your mind back a few decades to 1972's 'The Curse of Peladon' where the Doctor and Jo discussed Alpha Centauri's pronouns at length.

But still, seeing trans and non-binary identities celebrated to this degree is very much welcome regardless, especially in a family show with such a huge fanbase like Doctor Who. This is the kind of storytelling that saves lives, trolls be damned.

And now, with the impending arrival of more trans actors and characters in Yasmin Finney's wake — including Jinkx Monsoon, Mary Malone and Pete MacHale — Doctor Who's next season promises to be more inclusive than ever before.

If you have a problem with that, remember that your hero, the good Doctor, would never discriminate against trans people, or any other marginalised group for that matter either. So why would you?'

Synopsis: Jack gets you back with pranking you by thinking that there is a hickey on his neck and all hell breaks loose

Jack was serious when he had told you to watch your back and may the best Harlow win. You had been on your guard all week and Jack purposely didn’t do anything because he wanted to catch you when you least expected it. So, he did the same exact thing you did, brainstormed with PG about which prank to pull on you.

Jack had made a final decision and no one from PG was on board because they knew you were about to flip your shit.

They knew that you were probably going to beat your husband’s ass as well as theirs and they were trying to avoid that at all costs.

But your hard headed husband wasn’t about to listen.

He was going to get Curse to put makeup on his neck that resembled a hickey and your older sister Danielle was going to make sure she kept you occupied so that Yasmin could work her magic.

“Jack, are you really going through with this?” Shloob asked while looking nervous as Yasmin was adding the makeup.

“Will yall relax? I need to get her ass back!”

“But ehhh, do we have to do this one?!? I’m about to start planning your funeral because…. Your wife…. Have you met your wife? Because I feel as though because you about to pull this shit, I don’t think you have.” 2fo said while eyeing Yasmin’s makeup job.

“I have insurance.” Jack replied while shrugging.

“What insurance do you have?!”

“You know how she loves Titanic and makes me and Urban watch it with her every fucking time it comes on?”

“I’m not following.”

“I got her an expensive ass replica of that fucking necklace. She’ll fold from the minute she sees it.”

“Oh, smart man. But I’m still about to start planning your funeral. Don’t worry I’ll call the parents.” Quiiso added.

“Then it’ll finally be my turn.” Clay said while smiling.

“Clay, we are on the second floor in my house. I will throw you out the window. You and Dua need to stop stressing me the fuck out.”

“Yeah, because you about to be bald by thirty.” Yasmin added and Jack rolled his eyes.

“Y/N will just have to slap his head during sex because there won’t be any hair left.”

All of them busted out laughing as Jack was just sitting there shaking his head.

“Clay, imma kick your ass.”

“Okay! All finished! How does it look yall?” Yasmin exclaimed, stepping back and admiring her work.

“Damn, that shit looks legit.”

“Fuck, we about to die. That looks a little too real.” Shloob was already saying a silent prayer.

“Urb, you better hold your best friend back when she sees that.” 2fo said while looking at Jack’s neck.

“So she can beat my ass too?! Hell nah, I’m letting her at her husband.”

“Okay yall, it’s showtime.”

You and your sister had been out spending time with each other all day when the two of you finally made it back to your house.

Jack had already told you that PG and Yasmin were there and you decided to make tacos and a nacho bar for them since it has been a while since you made it.

Once you stepped through the door, you were immediately greeted by your husband.

“Hi boo bear!” You exclaimed while he picked you up and your legs immediately went around his waist.

“Hi my pretty baby.” Jack responded while he leaned down to kiss you.

“GROSS!”

“Uh Urban…. You and your girlfriend do the same exact thing so imma need for you to shut your ass up and let me love on my wife.”

“Still gross.”

“You know he’s been saying that since we were 15.” You said as you kissed Jack’s nose and he set you back on the ground.

“He’ll be saying it for the rest of his life.”

You had yet to notice the “hickey” that was on Jack’s neck and moved about the kitchen with Shloob helping you make everything.

Shloob figured that this was his insurance because he didn’t want any type of smoke from you.

Your sister, Danielle was eyeing Jack’s neck and was amazed at how good it looked. She simply sent him a text not wanting to bring attention to it out loud because you would notice.

Dani- Jack, that looks a little too real

Jack- I know! Yasmin is amazing!

Dani- Uhh that’s not what I meant. I meant that Y/N is probably going to put you six feet under when she sees it. Yall haven’t even made me an aunt yet.

Jack- I have insurance. She’ll see it and forgive me

Dani- What is it?

Jack- a necklace

Dani- Yeah, she’ll fold lol

The food was finally finished and everyone was now sitting around the table enjoying it. You already knew if you posted a picture of the food that Druski would feel some type of way since it was the norm for him to always miss out when you cooked.

“What did you buy today, Y/N? All them damn bags I saw.” Yasmin asked as she took another bite of her taco.

“Things.”

“Elaborate please, what the hell we supposed to do with that?” 2fo asked while looking over at you.

“Things for my husband’s eyes only.”

“GOT DAMMIT CAN YALL CHILL?!”

“WELL YALL FUCKING ASKED!”

“Please get her pregnant soon so we can get a break from these stories.” Ace said while looking over at Jack who stifled a laugh.

“Hmm, do yall honestly think that’s about to stop us?” Jack questioned while smiling and looking over at you. You couldn’t do anything but smile back and brush a hand through his curls.

“Might make it worse because of his breeding kink.” You confessed and both of you started to laugh.

“JESUSSSSSS HAVE MERCY!”

“Are kinks are off the table for yall to discuss when we’re eating?! Got damn?”

“I mean yall are eating, but… there is one that is my absolute favorite.”

“Do tell!” Curse exclaimed while raising her hands in the air.

“I’ll wait until yall are done.”

“Urban, cover your ears since you always exclaim how you’re a virgin.”

Everyone was laughing as you turned your head to look at Jack and caught sight of his neck and immediately got quiet.

“Baby?” You calmly asked, trying not to flip the table over.

“Yeah, mamas? What’s wrong?”

“What is that on your neck?”

“Oh fuck.” Shloob said while suddenly becoming more interested in his nachos.

“What?”

“Jackman, you heard what I asked you. What is that on your neck? Now if you make me repeat myself again, I’m kicking your ass.”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about, baby girl.”

You took a deep breath before turning to the side to fully face him.

“What’s the bitch’s name?”

“Who?!”

“Clay, have Maggie on speed dial because I am about to MURDER her oldest child.”

“Better for me so I can marry you then.”

“Clay, go away.” Jack said while attempting to take some of the heat off of himself but it didn’t work.

“Nuh uh, Jackman Thomas. Answer my question.”

“Baby, I literally have no idea what you’re talking about.”

“Oh, hmm okay. WHY IS THERE A FUCKING HICKEY ON YOUR NECK THAT I DIDN’T PUT THERE?”

“Oh damn, now she yelling. I just wanted to eat my food.”

“What? You put it there this morning.”

“LIES YOU TELL! I PUT IT ON THE OTHER SIDE!”

“You sure? I remember it being this side.”

“Jack drop that bitch’s location right now. After I finish kicking her ass for touching my man, you’re next.”

Jack had pulled out the necklace and opened it to where you could see it, but you refused to turn your head.

This went on for another ten minutes before you finally gave in.

Jack undid the clasp and put it around your neck and you were still in shock.

“Jack, I want you to draw me like one of your French girls.” You said while glancing up at him and everyone began to laugh.

“At least I know you would’ve moved over on the door so I wouldn’t die.”

All Jack did was throw a tortilla chip at Clay while he was laughing.

It was quiet for a few seconds, but you immediately knew that there was no other person who could be behind it.

“Why do I always get blamed for everything?!”
