doumeki: i simply....made a choice

my decision to watch the xxxholic movie (i found one with subs, and i think it’s accurate) has me all mess up on the inside.
because like, it’s not a straight up adaptation (very much like the live-action drama from years ago). and some parts i do miss from the og anime/manga. like the one-side hate going on steaming from wakanuki’s end regarding his and doumeki’s relationship, the whole ‘customer of the week’ going on with the shop, the cameos of other xxxholic characters or lack of cameos, the comedy of wakanuki having to be the servant boy being a foot-note)
yet somehow, they still manage to get the important stuff as well (that’s not just the aesthetics they got it mostly down and it rocks)
the bittersweetness with watanuki and himawari relationship that can’t be in like, anything matter. seriously, himawari’s speech in her goodbye got me tearing up because always, she deserves much better.
the fact doumeki is forever loyal and devoted to watanuki, helping him out without even being prompted? like, that bow-and-arrow scene near the ending? him still deciding to hang out with watanuki and help with the shop?
that final scene with watanuki and yuuko?? like hello??? the movie straight up kept the spirit of that moment from xxxholic and made it worse?! because this time around, watanuki is just a close-off depressed teenager who isn’t (un)intentionally part of some crazy plot, who found people he’s finally close with? and one person he gotten close to him since his mother died, dies to save him (and like, the world???)
that scene got crying, because this time around, watanuki accepts it. yuko won’t come back for good. no need to wait for her to show up (even in a dream telling him it’s okay to leave the shop).
all in all, it’s something i would recommend watching.

*im gonna be honest watching this movie was kind of a nightmare, its super out of character and condenses/rewrites the story in weird ways (dont even get me started on Jourogumo). i dont recommend this movie if you care about the integrity of these characters and story tbh. however, i thought i should include it for the sake of completion 😔. cool visuals tho.

xxxHolic (2022)
The live action xxxHolic movie is completely safe!
As a side warning, I was worried there would be spiders but it's mostly safe. [Mild spoiler]: At some point a spirit is reflected on a wall and it shadow takes the form of a spider. It's like a smoky ink drawing and lasts just a few seconds.

Scattered Day-After Thoughts on the xxxHolic 2022 Live Action movie
(shout out to @skellietoonz for the help finding a means to watch it)
These thoughts aren't in any particular order, and they range from silly jokes to serious constructive criticism on the film's structure/plot/layout. Spoilers for xxxHolic across the board (manga, anime, etc.).
-it really was Watanuki's fantasy paradise to have a date with Doumeki every single day. AND Doumeki was able to see the shop after Watanuki took over which means he had a wish, and since he stayed with Watanuki when a new customer came in, clearly his wish was to be with Watanuki!! Dudes just kiss already!!! X'D
-those edits between scenes man. What drugs were the editing team on and are they okay. I've never seen any live action anime edited that way and I've seen a lot of decent and shitty and B-movie live action anime. and, well. live action movies in general, all across the spectrum. there are very few with that kind of editing and fewer can pull it off well.
-Watanuki is homeless now, I guess. he has nowhere to go aside from the shop. boy what the heck were you doing before, where is your apartment that's identical to the Chobits apartment, how are you even alive to contemplate taking your own life HELLO???
-I think the movie's overarching story would have been stronger had Jorogumo just been an original villain since she's basically adapted in name only. I actually really like the anti-Yuko angle, like, the person who Grants Your Desire but in the most chaotic evil way possible without your knowledge vs Yuko who tells you straight up what will happen if she does what you're asking for. (Almost like the monkey's paw episode/chapters but expanded in a way that we haven't seen in xxxHolic before.)
-I'm glad that they weren't too chicken to take out Himawari accepting Watanuki's scars as payment, but they WERE too chicken not to include best bird Tanpopo afterwards. The thing Watanuki WAS ABLE TO DO and DID to help Himawari!!! Gift her a friend that wouldn't be harmed so she would always have a companion!!! Best baby bird!!! Alas. Must have been that Yuko costume budget.
-Mokona also was a casualty of that budget I bet. also for plot reasons lmao. Larg was able to swallow up the spirits from the Hundred Ghost Stories in no time flat, early on in the story. Offbrand Jorogumo and her creepy simp man trying to release evil spirits the whole movie and this little black manju bun would swallow it in seconds. thank u next. Larg was too strong. and also could not survive budgets. 0/10 no mokona
-Yuko's death transition is one of the saddest, gut wrenching, heartbreaking parts of the original story, and it's built up so well and foreshadowed so often not only in the manga but also the anime that divorced itself from crossover. Once the story gets there, it tears you into pieces. The movie does not earn that. I legitimately had to hold myself back from laughing, like. wait, Now??? you're doing this Now??
-Also the movie Watanuki had not grown more than half an inch of development and now he's running the shop??? Djdsjfdjg it took SO much development for him to do that and he is practically a different character by that point in the manga and anime to the fact it's emotionally painful for him to pretend to be how he used to be (xxxHolic Rei kicking me straight into the center of the earth)
-but seriously why did she die though. why was THAT the thing that did it. lmao.
-I DID appreciate the darker kind of end for the Lying Woman. In the manga, she died. In the anime, she got off pretty scot-free imo (even though it has a hopeful ending I am in the headspace for more often than not). but in the movie holy shit. she almost died, but she was being eaten away psychologically by her own lies in semi-physical form and that's exactly the kind of thing I was more or less expecting from this movie. a straddle between the manga and the anime.
-loved the colored manga pages transition to the title card too, that was a nice flourish.
-no ame-warashi. 0/10. she'd have smacked the emo right out of watanuki with her umbrella
-Watanuki's Bad Luck Fall was also like. 10x more brutal than the anime and manga and honestly. I kinda give them props for making it that extra brutal. (but not for cutting the audience out of the details of what Actually happened until the very end in that choppy non sequitur style)
overall, I'm glad I saw it finally! the movie really did a near literal speedrun of the xxxHolic story to get to a few spots at the end, but the emotional impact of the end is bare scraps of what it is in full context.
I give the creative team credit for attempting it, and to their credit, the sets and costumes are good and have their own distinct vibe. and I do give them credit for trying to emulate the dreamlike haze of some of the chapters' story arcs, even if it wasn't always successful.
But I'd say if someone really wants to do a live action version of the later xxxHolic arcs...I'd stick with a TV show format. that seems to work better with manga adaptations that already have anime episodes paced out for TV. and limited series style like an OVA. assume the audience has seen the thing, do maybe a quick montage/explanation of catchup in the first episode if need be, and then focus hard on the adaptation.
thank you for coming to my post-CLAMP day TEDtalk

So I watched Blood-C: The Last Dark
This whole review is going to have spoilers for Blood-C and other Blood media so if you care move along now. I'm not even gonna hide it.
The first half of this movie was honestly fire. Good stuff until the second half where that hill starts to decline real fast. The Last Dark starts out with a pretty solid follow-up to the ending of the anime. The world outside tbe events of Blood-C is actually interesting.
Unfortunately, this movie doesn't escape from some of Blood-C's original problems. There are too many scenes where I ask, "What was the point of that?" and I don't get a good answer. Not to mention that it still fails to explain important parts of the story.
Blood-C is already so weird. It's COMPLETELY different from the original Blood movie and Blood+. Saya hasn't made it her mission to destroy all Chiropterans in Blood-C. In fact, Chiropterans don't exist here. Instead the monsters she faces are called The Elder Bairns. These monsters are a lot more youkai-like more than anything else. There's never an explanation of what they really are and that's a huge shame.
In the plot twist for Blood-C's anime, it's revealed that Saya drinks the blood of The Elder Bairns and does not kill humans. This is completely different from original Blood's lore as she would still need human blood in the original, but is still hunting her own kind. Who knows why it's inconsistent, but whatever.
The whole fiasco that goes down in Blood-C was an experiment to test whether she would stay herself if her memories are completely changed. This whole plan seemed stupid to me though. Like why would you have her still fight The Elder Bairns if you you ultimately need her to kill a human? Why not raise her to hate humans or some shit?
The man behind the plan; Fumito, is also able to make paper fakes of himself? he does it in the movie, which slightly makes sense as he comes from a clan that works closely with The Elder Bairn and considering they're like youkai, he could be a Kannushi or some shit. Even so, it just comes out of nowhere and I just have to accept he could randomly pull anything out his ass. I already suspended my disbelief for controlling The Elder Bairn with Saya's blood through means never explained why you gotta make it worse? Everything Fumito does sucks except for confidently shooting part of Saya's face off in the anime.
Blood-C fails for most of its characters. One of the ones that died in the anime was actually redeemed in the movie and the hacker group in the movie was alright. Everyone else sucks though. The villains are handled REALLY bad and the Saya herself doesn't fair much better. Again, the first half of the movie was great. It redeems much of her character now that she's able to be proactive but then she just gets sidelined again by Fumito's bullshit.
Speaking of bullshit, did you know Blood-C is a CLAMP story? You know what that means! Blood-C actually crosses over with xxxHolic! (Not Tsubasa thankfully). The shopkeeper (forgot his name) actually plays a pretty vital role for Saya, but he makes NO SENSE if you're not aware of xxxHolic already. His existance feels so out of place and somewhat undermines Saya's own resolve by being there. Cringe. I'm okay with CLAMP doing crossovers like this, but it frequently amounts to having the audience go "Oh I know that guy!" followed by weakening the plot.
Speaking of out of place. The big CG monster at the end is so bad. I'm not even upset at the animation for it. Yeah, it clashes with the wonderful 2D animation for the movie, but who cares? There was no need for the giant monster! It just gets one-shotted anyway because it had a weak point. Gone as quickly as it came. Fades away leaving little lasting damage despite towering over the city. Why was it there? There's so much of that in Blood-C.
Why was there nudity? I was actually ready to praise a bit of the nudity. At first I thought they were doing a fan-service bit for no reason, but it was actually there to prepare viewers for the PTSD nightmare Saya has in her sleep. That's cool! Except the nightmare amounts to nothing! We already know she's traumatized. You could remove that nightmare and nothing changes.
I hate having these problems. Blood-C genuinely has some really cool shit in it. It may be worth a watch but like...I can't honestly say that. Truly a shame. If you're a fan of some good looking animation I would give it a look at least. Production IG whipped up something good with these visuals.
If you want a hyper violent anime with an actually good plot, I'd watch the 2019 adaption for Blade of the Immortal. Way better.

new xxxHOLiC movie thoughts
So I recently watched the live action xxxHOLiC movie that came out (which I almost missed hearing about and then happened to learn existed because it came out around the same time as the last Free! movie), and decided it'd be fun to share my thoughts, bc why not.
First of all, maybe folks know this already, but the movie does not seem to be linked to the live action TV series that came out a few years ago. I went into it unsure, but it seems like no, they're different. Overall I would say I liked them both about a similar amount for different reasons. Both had things I actually preferred over the original manga/anime, as well as a bunch of things that were left out or changed for the worse. One great big YMMV, essentially.
Overall rating: 3.5/5, maybe worth it depending on what you liked about the series. Not sure how it stands up without knowing the original, but it could be interesting to watch anyways.
(Spoilers under the cut; CW for discussions ableism, suicidality)
Things I liked
The casting was, overall, very good. I kinda wish Maru and Momo had not looked so much like adults, but I can imagine that some thought went into that (especially given a couple of moments in the movie + overall themes) and the actresses pulled them off well. (And it was nice to see them around at all, as the TV show didn't have them.) Watanuki worked really well (very good Woobie vibes, or whatever the new thing is they're calling it these days). Doumeki started a tiny bit rocky but grew on me quick. Yuuko had the full range, which impressed me quite a bit. And Himawari gave off perhaps the most personality I've seen from her yet.
The chemistry between characters was also excellent. Look, one of the things I really enjoyed about the live-action drama was that they didn't try to keep the more over-the-top comic relief beats, especially Watanuki blowing up at everyone every 30 seconds. It would probably be possible to translate that more directly into live-action, but I personally think it'd be really, really hard to make it enjoyable, given the different genre conventions between anime and drama. Yuuko and Watanuki were great; Watanuki and Himawari read to me as even less overtly romantic than it was in the live-action drama, which was already toned down from the manga/anime; and (after the first scene anyway) the DouWata dynamic was exquisite. Seriously. I would seriously consider re-watching the movie for this alone. They toned down a lot of the antagonism while keeping the uncertainty and tension that, to me, are the most characteristic aspects of their dynamic. Doumeki comes off as the right combination of stoic, awkward, observant (but out of the loop), and genuinely concerned/protective. Watanuki's unawareness of Doumeki's care for him feels a lot less cruel in this iteration, which I appreciated. We get to see them smile and laugh together, ffs! My heart!!! (Also, side note, we got to see more genuine fluff between Watanuki and Maru & Moro than I remember seeing in the entire manga. That was extremely cute as well.)
Some of the special effects and soundtrack were really cool. Some of it they leaned on a little too hard, or drew out a little too long, but overall I think it supported the movie pretty well.
Partially because of the way it happened, and the fact that there was less material building up to it, the ending went down more smoothly than it did in the manga, even though it echoed it significantly. It actually felt like a nice mix of open-ended and bittersweet, rather than purely tragic. It kind of left me wishing that the original had managed to strike a similar balance instead of what we got.
Things I didn't
Biggest complaint overall: the plot conceit they used to stitch together the middle of the movie. Boring, clichéd, took too long, and didn't meaningfully raise the stakes—just kept them more or less where they'd been. I kind of get why they chose it, given the conflict they were trying to build for Watanuki, but it really made the middle of the movie drag for me.
The villains. Spider lady and her motivations didn't make sense—which was mostly okay in the original, because she wasn't carrying a major part of the story, but weakened the film over here. Also the new lackey character they added only sort of made sense, and wasn't really solid enough to justify the amount of time and emotion the movie spent on him.
[CW Suicidality] I feel like they could've chosen not to make Watanuki explicitly suicidal at the start of the movie, and I wish they hadn't. Maybe it was part of the message they wanted to send about his internal conflict, as a lot of his themes revolve around choosing to embrace hope, pain, and change, but there could've been parallels without being quite so ham-fisted about it.
[CW Ableism] Similarly, there was a pretty neurotypical-bullshit-flavored conclusion to the end of the arc they used to introduce how the shop worked. Watanuki saves the ring-wearing liar girl (from the early canon arc) from the truck, only for her to have what appears to be a psychotic break in public, during which she receives no help and after which comes no hint whatsoever of resolution. I don't know, I kind of think I'd have preferred the truck.
If they had the budget for very pretty black sand (and other things) everywhere, and all the special effects the villain got, I kinda wish we'd gotten to see a few more interstitial points between "shapeless billowing sand-shadows" and "hot villains."
Some of the decisions on scene cuts and simply failing to explain how certain scenes resolved. Yes, Holic's always been a bit fuzzy around the edges, but parts of it stayed confusing in a way that pulled me out of immersion in the story. (Then again, I say the same about cartoons, so I might just be particularly sensitive to this.)
It's not like CLAMP's explanation of Watanuki's backstory was good to begin with, but this one was also poorly thought through. I wish they'd felt like they could just skip it (like they did with any mention of Watanuki's father whatsoever. Because sure).
They kept in a hint of Zashiki-warashi that was extremely cute and then dropped it for their bad tying-things-together plotline instead. I would have wholeheartedly recced the movie if they'd decided to do the Amewarashi/Watanuki's-soul-gets-stolen arc, because especially with this Watanuki and Doumeki it could've been so good.
Similarly: don't put my boy on a lonely bench and then not bring in the lonely lady. Dammit, I had a brief hope that they'd try to condense that down into, like. A vignette. I would've taken it and been grateful.
The way they arrived at the ending was...annoying. But that kinda ties into my complaints about the villains, etc. above.

An interesting discussion...
I think Sakura's power level depends on if we're talking about the anime or the manga. In the anime she has more cards to play around with, but doesn't seem to be all THAT powerful on her own - usually with the really big threats she has the help of Kero, Yue, and/or Syaoran. Heck, she isn't able to transform Light and Dark into Sakura Cards without Kero and Yue fusing into her staff (and I think Syaoran helped too), even though I think she initially captured both cards on her own. That being said, she did create her own card unconsciously in the Nameless Card, which eventually became The Hope in the 2nd movie when combined with The Nothing.
In the manga, she only has 19 cards to play around with. But she's portrayed as much more powerful, to the point that Eriol entrusts her to separate Clow's magic between Clow's two reincarnations (Eriol and Sakura's dad), and has been in fact pushing her to get stronger for this express purpose.
Plus I'm not sure if this article takes Clear Card into account, where Sakura is subconsciously creating new cards right and left, and everyone around her is acknowledging that she's becoming really powerful. It'll be interesting to see how she pairs up with Akiho, especially given Akiho's backstory in the manga so far (*spoilers* Akiho is basically a Squib, born from a powerful magic family but having no magic of her own *end spoilers*). Plus, if xxxHolic is anything to go off of, at some point in the future Sakura will be powerful enough to use the Cards without her wand (since she gives the Star Wand to Yuuko as payment to grant a wish), though that might not mean so much since we now know she gets a new wand in Clear Card to replace the Star Wand.
In Sailor Moon's case, she fights best with the support of others, and also has a team all the time while Sakura doesn't.
They're very different takes on mahou shoujo to say the least.

Top ten of your favorite villains in general👀👀
OMG ty for sending this in! OKAY SO you said villains in general so this list spans across different media but ANYWAYS here they are in no particular order or reason, just the first ones in my brain.
1. Dracula from Castlevania because he was driven to go ham bananas all because he loved his wife so much that he was willing to give the finger to god by becoming immortal, just to prove god didn't have the final say and blah blah long backstory cut short THIS MAN LOVED HIS WIFE ENOUGH TO SUMMON A HELL ARMY 2. Lil' Slugger from Paranoia Agent is a good one because you don't know until the end of it whether he's a supernatural force or a real serial-maimer that goes after people with a bat. I'm always a sucker for good symbolism tbh. Though the series deals with some real heavy stuff, if you like thriller horror anime and Satoshi Kon movies then this one is good! 3. Eliade from D-Grayman; look, so spoilers BUT it basically boils down to "scary monster that pretends to be a human falling in love with a human pretending to be a scary monster". Though not only do I like her design, but thinking of her backstory & how she seemed to genuinely love Count Krory in the end & how he still loves her 😢 4. Doma from Demon Slayer because I love his design but God. He's such a Douche. That's it. Enough said. Don't blame me. 5. General Tartar from Splatoon 2. This sludge AI saw a second wave of sentient life emerge and saw it starting to copy humanities mistakes, THEN decided the only way to correct such was to blend smart children up in a literal goddamn blender to make DNA goo. And when that plan almost got messed up he was literally going to destroy civilization to start from scratch. Even for an AI its a super fucked up plan for an intelligent telephone to cook up. 6. Jorogumo from xxxHolic because she's not quite a villain per-se, even so idk to me 1 spider does not equal 1 eye considering how many babies those hellspawns can have and how many eyes they get when we humans have only two. A whole bag of spiders for an eye sure but c'mon. I'm not good at math but that doesn't seem fair BUT she did it to teach an important lesson and in Rei she seemed to care about the mermaid so 🤷‍♀️ 7. Kira Yoshikage in jjba to me is peak villain-y, because he doesn't ham it up nor is he too serious, instead he knows how to pick his battles....but just because you can taunt & beat up a highschooler doesn't mean you should. Or stop to change his socks. Idk he's calculated but petty, and ultimately his pettiness is what gets him in the end. Plus its funny when compared to other JoJo villains who want to take over/reset/control a part of the world, at the end of the day he's just a Salary Man who wants to live a quiet life while hunting for his odd fetishes. A certified weirdo. 8. The Mad Sorcerer from Dungeon Meshi. If you haven't read it I won't spoil you because its GOOD but with a sick title like that do you need to know anything more? jk but their evil reason is a classic trope and despite the evil it was done out of love SO YEAH plus I like how their pupils change time to time because unusually shaped pupils are always peak design.
9. Crona from Soul Eater may be listed as a villain but listen. I've adopted them as my own because they deserved WAY BETTER and people get nasty with them (I'll murder those people with a brick I s2g). The sheer HOPE in their eyes at the prospect of friendship...💀💖😭 plus their severe social anxiety is #Relatable 10. Uhhh not necessarily one villain but the group of girls from Rule of Rose really do embody those vibes that "people who were girls that got bullied by other girls" can only pick up and understand. No high-stakes really but in a horror game where you don't even really get to do anything abt what they do to the protagonist until the end really ramps up the helpless feeling in the game. (Also the shit game controls. Combat is notoriously awful)

Fandoms List
Hello everyone! Though TBPW contains officially 12 fandoms for now, it is not a secret that these are only the fandoms which officially take an active part in the plot; but for multiple reasons, more fandoms can also be referenced through either cameos, or sometimes I even have some drafts of side-plots about them which make them take part in the TBPW canon. In any ways, for the most curious of you, just in case you want to know about either the fandoms I know, heard about, thought about, or if you are questioning whether a fandom could potentially take part in the TBPW canon, here is the complete list of all the fandoms I know and whether they’re compatible with the TBPW metaphysics or not.
Legend:
✔ Susceptible to be compatible with the TBPW metaphysics, though further research might be needed ✅ Incompatible with the TBPW metaphysics. If the fandom is used in any way, then either it is purely fictive (aka depicted as fandoms inhabitants of Ono-A1.3β are fans of, whereas the actual "real” counterpart does not exist), or its TBPW counterpart requires some deep changes in its mechanics (e.g. no time travels if the original series uses them as a regular device). Notice that the order these fandoms and series are classified in testifies in no way how much I like or dislike them. The order is alphabetical, and the presence or absence of a fandom in this list only testifies that I have (or haven't) at some point been somewhat curious about the fandom, thus made some research about it. Said research could have independently lasted just a half hour or entire weeks, this doesn't mean that I am more or less interested in said fandom (rather, that the concept used in it has piqued (or not) my curiosity, even though the story in itself wouldn't necessarily interest me).
First ❤ : Indicates how much I have watched/played of the actual series/game.
❤ I have watched more than 95% of the official content.
❤ I have watched at least 50% of the official content.
❤ I have watched less than 10% of the official content.
❤ I haven't watched the series yet, but got spoilers about the majority of its plot.
❤ I have never watched nor read anything about this series, and don't know anything about its plot.
Second ❤ : Indicates how much research I have led about the series/game, mostly on its wikia (or other specialized and detailed site).
❤ I have read practically all of the articles available (at the time I made the research).
❤ I am familiar with most of the details and theories.
❤ I have read a few articles, tumblr analysis and fan recommandations about whether or not this series could be of some interest for me.
❤ I have only read the regular Wikipedia page.
❤ I have only heard of the series recently and don't know anything about it besides its title.

ALSO i don't know if this count as a spoiler (and if it does i'm sorry inbox guardian) BUT you mentioning the clamp school detectives ad in the restaurant reminded me of how x/1999 was technically a movie in duklyon (the two boys watched it with their class in one chapter) but duklyon is supposed to be in the same universe as clamp school detectives which is supposed to be in the same universe as x/1999 so what are we supposed to believe here? not ohkawa in the 90's that's for sure
No spoilers there! That’s totally fine. As long as a message doesn’t touch on the future of Tsubasa or xxxHolic then it’s completely ok!
That is an absolutely incredible detail though! I mean, if characters in Dukylon were watching a X/1999 movie, they were technically watching the future of their own world happen on screen. Not even that far in the future, either. Less than ten years. Meaning these characters were all alive and potentially able to watch this film just as much as anyone else.
And that’s so wild.

Is L.L. luckier because he'll stay with his C.C.? In comparison to Watanuki who still waits for Yuuko?
