DFP Actors August: Meighan Desmond
Tumblr media
NZ actors tend to end up in a lot of the same shows over the years it seems. I have a lot of fun spotting familiar faces, so I thought this would be a fun and silly little project, seeing which actors have repeatedly been in things that Deano was also in (not necessarily alongside). Just a bit of trivia. Enjoy!
Hercules: The Legendary Journeys (1995-1998/1997-1999)
Tumblr media
Dean played a few different characters on this show: Iloran - S1E12 “The Gauntlet” Young Iolaus - S4E3 “Regrets… I’ve Had a Few”, S4E11 “Medea Culpa” and S4E20 “Twilight”. Ruun - S4E7 “Prodigal Sister”
Meighan played Discord in 7 episodes: S4E6 "Two Men and a Baby" S4E9 "If I Had a Hammer" S4E16 "Porkules" S4E17 "One Fowl Day" S5E18 "Love on the Rocks" S5E20 "Fade Out" S6E7 "A Wicked Good Time"
I am in complete love with Discord's aesthetics across the Hercules/Xena shows/movies. I just think she's so pretty, in a sort of cute-bratty-evil-vampire kind of way. Ugh. (But I'm also super fond of Aphrodite. I'm a simp for hot girls, idk what to tell you.)
Shortland Street (1996/1994-1996)
Tumblr media
Dean played Nurse Harry Martin in 1996. Meighan played Lulu Chatfield (apparently 1994-1996? She was in one of the episodes I found of Dean's so for sure 1996).
Xena: Warrior Princess (1996,2000/1997-2000)
Tumblr media
Dean played two roles: Homer/Orion - S1E13 “Athens City Academy of the Performing Bards” Wiglaf - S6E9 “Return of the Valkyrie”
Meighan played Discord in 4 episodes: S3E4 "The Deliverer", S4E19 "Takes One to Know One", S5E15 "Married with Fishsticks" and S5E22 "Motherhood" -- and also Sturgina in episode S5E15 "Married with Fishsticks". (Okay, I haven't watched it yet but "Married with Fishsticks" sounds hilarious.)
Young Hercules (1998)
Tumblr media
(This is the TV movie that preceded the Young Hercules TV show.) Dean played Young Iolaus. Meighan played Discord. Look at those pigtails. WHAT?
Young Hercules (1998-1999)
Tumblr media
Dean played one of the main characters, Young Iolaus, in 46 of the 50 episodes. Meighan played (you guessed it!) Discord in 7 episodes, "Inn Trouble", "Battle Lines: Part 2", "Ares on Trial", "A Serpent's Tooth", "Con Ares", "The Prize" and "Mila".
---
IMDB claims Meighan is in "When Love Comes" (a 1998 film starring Dean) but I own the DVD and she's not listed in the credits from what I could see, nor did I remember her being in it, nor could I find her when I spent far too long looking for her in it while prepping this post. (I was actually excited when I saw her listed for it.) She's credited as "Shelley" on IMDB but idek who that would be or when in the film - if anyone knows, please tell me haha.
Did I miss anything else?

Unpopular Xena Opinion: I did not care for season three.
I did not care for the way that they characterized Gabrielle in particular. Particularly in The Deliverer. Having her be impregnated by an entity and her only reaction was complete acceptance and compassion?
It would have been so much more interesting to have even just an ounce of nuance to the writing for this. I understand that this is Xena we’re talking about. Nuance isn’t terribly abundant.
But they could have literally portrayed her as a trauma survivor living with the doubt and confusion. It would have made Gabrielle such an interesting and even more complicated character. As it stood even then, I’m sure, it felt like an insult to Gabrielle’s intelligence- to not even question, just accept it. No fear, doubt, anger, confusion (all valid emotions to have after such an event)?
Didn’t care for the episodes about Chin because they all hinged on shoddy characterization too.
The pseudo-Shakespearean episodes with the kids being killed were fascinating. Darker than most of what Xena as a show had to offer.
But other then that, I tend to skip season three. The odd numbered seasons, generally speaking, are only there to complete my collection. The even numbered seasons are my go-to’s.

The True Deliverer
I’ve said it before, but I’ll say it again. Khrafstar wasn’t the true deliverer of the story in Britannia. Xena was.
Tumblr media
According to dictionary.com, “to deliver” is both a transitive and intransitive verb with seventeen definitions altogether. Some, of course, are very similar to each other and/or don’t apply here, so they won’t be explored in this post. First up is “to carry and turn over to the intended recipient or recipients.” Others are: “to bring to the support of a candidate or a cause;” “to utter or pronounce;” “to strike or throw;” “to set free;” “to save;” “to assist in bringing forth young / to assist at the birth of;” and “to do or carry out as promised.” Khrafstar more went along for the ride while Xena did all these things.
Tumblr media
She’s the one who liberated him and his fellow prisoners and ensured that they were returned to Boadicea, the cult to their temple.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After pledging herself and Gabrielle to Boadicea’s campaign, Xena freed the Celtic warrior and her army from Roman oppression altogether.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Xena struck physical and emotional blows against Caesar’s soldiers, Ares, Boadicea, Caesar himself, and Khrafstar, making bold declarations all the while.
*gif below*
Tumblr media Tumblr media
More than once, she rescued Gabrielle. (The following GIF will only account for “The Deliverer” since Tumblr won’t accept larger files.)
*gif below*
Tumblr media
She also played midwife to Gabrielle while the bard was birthing Hope.
Tumblr media
Gabrielle believed that Hope was the fulfillment of Xena’s proclamation.
Tumblr media
Lastly, the warrior princess’s final promise of the titular episode takes a while to come to fruition, but gets there in the end.
Tumblr media
Recap: Xena delivered Khrafstar to Boadicea and, unwittingly, Gabrielle into Dahak’s hands. She delivered the rebels from their oppressors and portents of doom along the way. With her usual mixed fury and glee, she delivered hefty blows left and right. She delivered Gabrielle from danger multiple times, then delivered Hope. All in all, she delivered on her intentions. …What’s that, Xena?

When Xena cut Gabrielle down and she caught her over her shoulder, I was like damn, missed opportunity for a bridal carry moment
And then I was blessed because when Gabrielle was in the flame spiral at the end of the very same episode, Xena flung herself into the fire, saved Gabrielle, landed holding her bridal style, and then Gabrielle put her arms around Xena and cuddled into her neck
where is my gifset of this moment

‘As above, so below’ (aka, ‘Atomic theory.’)
Excerpt from a website I found that explains what ‘as above, so below’ means:
[’As above, so below’ was recorded in the Hermetic texts from The Emerald Tablet of Hermes Trismegistus, which states:
“That which is Below corresponds to that which is Above, and that which is Above corresponds to that which is Below, to accomplish the miracle of the One Thing.”
In the heavens above, the planet’s energies are that which is so below on Earth. We humans who live on the so below are made of these same heavenly energies of that which is as above. Hence, the microcosm is oneself, and the macrocosm is the universe.]
It’s a theory that’s been postulated for centuries. I talk about it quite a bit on my Tumblr from time to time, but I’ve never explained the theory and where it comes from. I didn’t just make it up, I just realized it for myself. This theory lends itself to the ancient Chinese teachings of Taoism and the concept of ‘Yin-yang.’
“As above, so below, as within, so without, as the universe, so the soul.”
– Hermes Trismegistus
The interesting thing about it being mentioned in ‘Xena: Warrior Princess’, and particularly in this episode, is its theme is light-hearted and comedic at the start, but by the end, it’s extremely dramatic and dark. I don’t know whether it was intended or not, but it works with the ‘as above, so below’ theory, because there’s more to it than just being about the heavens and the planets. It has more to do with the correspondence and correlation of opposites, which is why it is related to ‘Yin-yang.’ As you know, that’s what I consider Xena and Gabrielle to be the human representation of. So if it was intended, it was a very creative choice to use the “as above, so below” theory in this episode. A sort of foreshadowing to what was to come with Xena and Gabrielle, not only in this episode, but further on in the show with discovering they are soulmates.
Furthermore… little did our inquisitive bard know, she was posulating the leading scientific theory of the 19th century, of what has come to be called ‘Atomic theory.’ This theory only became a serious scientific topic since Albert Einstein discovered the atom. It was purely philosophy before he wrote his paper on Brownian motion in 1905, that later helped scientists find a way for testing the theory experimentally, which then led to what was the existence of the atom. From that, a whole new scientific paradigm to understanding the Universe and how our animal nature interacts with it, was born. And because of all this, we now go by atomic/quantum theory over classical/newtonian theory in any and all scientific pursuit of attempting to answer the biggest questions in philosophy. Such philosophic topics mostly started out in ancient Greece with the likes of Plato, Socrates, Aristotle, Democritus… ect. The latter of which interacts with Gabrielle in the show, but is known and remembered, in real life, for the formulation of ‘Atomic theory’. So, that tells us that Gabrielle, in the show, is the one who came up with it instead. This would make her a Greek philosopher.
I’ve always thought this little debate between Xena and Gabrielle highly intriguing. Xena is the realist and Gabrielle is the idealist. Now, it was Einstein himself that said that “imagination is more important than knowledge.” For through imagination, there is many possibilities and potentialities for discovering truthful information, than there ever will be for information already known and understood, as it is restricted and limited by the boundaries of conventionality. So, unfortunately, for Xena, she won’t make as many discoveries as Gabrielle will, as she only considers such information to postulate on and take seriously if it can be discovered through empirical evidence. I.e. objectively observed and experienced. It’s a classic case of idealism vs realism. But, based on this post, we can come to the conclusion that it is mind over matter that is the key to discovering fundamental truths. In this debate, it is idealism that wins. Sorry, Xena. Realism only masks the truth, not finds it. You may have created effective medical technique, but Gabrielle is the one who theorized as to why the human body even needs medical aid at all. She has you beat, Miss. “I Have Many Skills.”, because she’s brave enough to postulate on what seems unrealistic. So, actually, her theory is absolutely 100% spot on and your scepticism is not!
BONUS: I love when they mess with each other and get flirty.

Where's the "Xena invents..." category because she invented CPR and was the first to use lightening via a kite...I'm sure there's more I'm missing but I always thought that was hilarious when they did that. It's like her being at big history moments centuries apart because "everything is ancient". 😂Also one for for "Violence Is the Answer" - killing Green Dragon; forget that drawn out mess after it but the kill was needed.
yessss anon I forgot about Xena discovering electricity centuries before Ben Franklin 🤣
I almost put Is There a Doctor in the House? under every single historical event because not only did Xena invent CPR in that ep, she also inspired Hippocrates to create the Hippocratic Oath lmao
A lot of them also fall somewhere between myth and history so I didn’t even know where to put them:
Stonehenge is from when Dahak’s temple collapses (The Deliverer)
Eli looks like a Jesus reference, but Eve IS the Jesus reference 😭 making Xena… Mary
Gabrielle competes in that bard contest with Homer
Joxer’s son is Virgil. As in, THE Virgil
Xena acted out the plot of 300 but by herself and scares Xerxes away

“Gabrielle, who did this?”
“I did.”
This is it, this is everything this episode has been building to. Not Caesar, not Xena’s checkered past, not her efforts to make amends and rebuild trust, not the plight of the Britons nor the heroism of Boudicea, not religious zealotry and persecution. It’s just Gabrielle, and this choice she made, and the unimaginable repercussions.
Not that it would, because it’s the entire point of the thing, but I can’t say enough about how absolutely unshakable the show is in this having been Gabrielle’s CHOICE. No one can steer this otherwise, they can’t make it pretty and excusable. Not the audience, and not Xena herself. AND OH SHE TRIES. Immediately, Xena seizes a narrative that makes this not Gabrielle’s fault.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The things to love in this are nearly endless, from the simplicity of the exchange to the way it’s performed (SUPERBLY) and shot. There’s something BROKEN in Gabrielle, something Xena keeps willing to still be there, but it’s gone, and as that becomes too true to dismiss, all Xena can do is hug Gabrielle close. Until Krakoa appears and puts a punchable face on the whole thing, but that’s barely relevant.
Like I said, there’s a lot here to love, but let’s start with the smaller, almost incidental thing: how Xena can’t live in the lie. I’ve brought this up a bunch of times, apologies for the repetition, how Gabrielle has such a firm narrative surrounding Xena that she’s built in her head, and it takes years of life together, day in and day out, for the monolith to erode and for Gabrielle to finally see Xena as XENA, warts and all.
Xena has her own version of Gabrielle too, this isn’t just a problem for Gabby to deal with, but as we see here, that problem has nothing to do with refusal to see what’s directly in her face. Twice, Xena tries to deny that Gabrielle has just done the unthinkable. Twice, that’s it, then she accepts what all evidence is screaming at her and ... well, “moves forward” is what I want to say, but as we know, it’s not that simple. She doesn’t keep denying it, though, that’s where I’m going with this, and I love it as a counterpart to the countless times we see Gabrielle given direct hard proof of Xena’s worst impulses, and still she remains absolutely devoted to the parts she wants to believe, because she wants to believe them.
This is going to keep biting Gabby in the ass, and this episode is where the show begins to double down on it. The framework through which is makes those moves is subtle, and brilliant for that subtlety. I mentioned a few times how Caesar in this episode is a red herring, making us think we’re about to watch Xena once again lose all perspective and reason when it comes to fucking up his day. That’s not why we’re here, sad to say for everyone involved (except, I suppose, Caesar), but including him threads the overall ideas a bit deeper in fascinating ways.
When it comes to Xena and Caesar, destruction is the only way things can ever go. Of troops, of strategies, of land, of their friends, of each other. When Caesar betrayed Xena, the only answer she could ever bring was fire and ashes. Dahak and his followers are Gabrielle’s Caesar. She, like Xena, believed the world they spun for her and trusted the place she would have in that world. Also like Xena, when betrayal came, she was left hurt, broken, and forever changed. But while Xena took all that had been done to her and vowed destruction, Gabrielle embraces creation. She NEEDS this to have been something good, needs it to have meant something. She insists that Hope is her child more than Dahak’s and refuses to accept even the possibility that things could go any other way. It comes in a nicer wrapper, certainly, but Gabrielle throws herself into her *ahem* HOPE just as blindly and every bit as reckless as Xena embraces her darkness.
But nothing in the world of Xena is ever that black and white, and Gabrielle’s refusal to deal with the trauma of what’s happened to her and what she’s done sends her into a different but parallel spiral to Xena. Gabrielle’s judgment in the wake of all this becomes massively and completely fucked, as we’ll see all too plainly with The Debt in a hot second. Gabby is now primed and ready to step off a cliff she’s carved for herself, the repercussions for which will continue to haunt her through Season 4.
All this is even more incredible when you realize this moment in The Deliverer is one the show has been carefully, intentionally building toward, reaching all the way back to a little tiny thing from two years and nearly fifty episodes previous. Hello to Season 1 Episode 3′s “Dreamworker”.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This whole exchange carries incredible weight just on its own, particularly given that it’s so early in the series. We know Xena’s speaking from experience, that when she killed for the first time, when she realized she could (and maybe even liked it?), she stopped being the person she was and took her first step toward the monster she would become.
What we of course don’t know then, couldn’t possibly, is that this isn’t just Xena talking to Gabrielle, but Gabrielle talking to herself. She echoes back these exact words to Xena (who knows, she already knows, how she must hate hearing the certainty of it from Gabrielle).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
SO GOOD SO SO SO GOOD. What a kick in face, too, to go back and rewatch the scene in Dreamworker on the heels of this, to see Gabrielle so young and fresh-faced and naive to this broken woman who’s seen and done too much.
But the Dreamworker moments don’t stop! Gabrielle’s “blood innocence” is a central idea in that episode, too, with the first act showcasing how she pretty much isn’t listening to a single goddamn thing Xena is trying to teach her. Denied a sword, Gabby goes behind Xena’s back and buys a weapon of her very own.
Tumblr media
Which Xena of course immediately discovers and confiscates. We see the boob dagger come back at random times throughout the series, usually as a little nudge-nudge continuity callback, which I genuinely appreciate. That’s all it ever is, up until it isn’t.
Tumblr media
It’s not exaggeration to say the boob dagger changes the momentum of this fight. Xena’s losing, and losing pretty badly, but the surprise weapon and the proof of Krakow’s own mortality throws him off, and gives Xena just enough of an edge to win. Could she have pulled it off without the dagger? She’s Xena, so probably, but looking at the fight as it happened, the dagger was crucial.
SO HERE’S WHAT I FUCKING LOVE ABOUT THAT. Is Xena specifically using the boob dagger to win a statement on how all of this was inevitable? If Gabrielle hadn’t bought the dagger, Xena wouldn’t have taken it, and she wouldn’t have had it on-hand to beat Kravenedge. Gabrielle was the vehicle for this violence, in the distant and recent past both.
But she’s just as much the vehicle for putting a stop to it. Had Gabrielle not bought that dagger, Xena may well have lost this fight, and setting aside this specific conflict, a world without Xena is a darker, bloodier place. Had Gabrielle not stopped the cultists, even as she played directly into their hands, someone else would have been their sacrifice, another would have been chosen to bring Dahak’s child into the world. Odds are high that person wouldn’t have a Warrior Princess at their side. Odds are high that person wouldn’t have the heart and love and willingness to sacrifice as Gabrielle. Dahak’s time is now, and he is coming. He uses Gabrielle to make it happen, but by her actions, it’s Gabrielle herself who stops those plans and saves the world.
When the dust settles and we have the full picture, it becomes clear that all along, It’s Gabrielle who is The Deliverer.
