One parallel I’ve noticed from ‘Sins Of The Past’ and ‘Between The Lines’ is that instead of Xena being distracted and stuck to the ground by Gabrielle’s failed attempt to fight back and protect herself, Gabrielle (Shakti) is now the one being distracted and struck to the ground by Xena’s (Arminestra) interrupted attempt to kill.
It’s almost a shot-for-shot parallel to show that they’re rediscovering their soulmate connection all over again.
I wonder if it was intended. 🤔
Another thing to ask Steven L. Sears about.
What their reincarnated lives and karmic cycle show us is that even before Xena and Gabrielle knew each other in this lifetime, they were already together in the past life before that just as they will also be in their next life as Aminestra and Shakti. That’s what Naima meant by what she told them. That they have been, are and will be connected by their very soul. No beginning and no end. It’s extremely profound.
You know… if you believe in that sort of thing. I always have. In no small part thanks to this episode I’m sure.

Joxer: how do i tell Gabrielle how i feel?
Xena, wincing: well. just don’t expect anything from her. no strings attached.
Joxer: got it, no expectations!
Xena, quietly, to herself: of course, just kissing her worked for me

Xena: Warrior Princess
Season one: the one where it goes from ‘f**k i’m gonna regret this’ to ‘f**k i love her’
Season two: the one where xena possesses a man’s body to kiss gabrielle through a magical spirit world don’t ask
Season three: the one where they have marriage problems
Season four: the one where they are soulmates forever and ever
Season five: the one where they become “mum and dad” to a female baby jesus
Season six: the one which confirms their 50 years of marriage and makes the network fume in a corner

i wish i could telepathically communicate to all the young gays that watching Xena is worth it even with our much higher standards today for lgbt characters in media. the cast crew writers and showrunners never panicked when they discovered that their characters were driven by romantic love and were pulled back only by the network to prevent it from becoming textual. by season 4 they established them as souls in love reincarnated together forever and never tried in earnest to pair them with men. by the end of season 5 they stopped that altogether. by season 6, it is as explicit as they were able to make it given the restraints at the time, and they did so much to signal to queer audiences that Xena and Gabrielle were one of us. like Xena presenting Gabrielle, a lover of written word, with a poem by Sappho as a gift (and becoming adorably shy and blushing as she reads it).
there is so much joy in seeing just how effectively they were able to convey the romantic nature of their love and companionship despite the opposition. physical attraction is clear in the s6 episodes "Who's Gurkhan" and "When Fates Collide". "When Fates Collide" and "Return of the Valkyrie" are so dizzyingly and overtly romantic that i still can't believe they pulled it off. when viewed in its full context it is really an epic and beautiful love story. :)

Okay. I'm in the middle of my Xena rewatch, and I'm on A Family Affair, and can we talk about the scene where Xena meets Gabrielle's parents?
Xena: So, how's she been?
Gabs' dad: Without you? Just fine.
Xena: I meant, after everything she's been through.
Gabs' dad: You should know. Seducing her away from home with your heroics, filling her head with strange ideas. How's she been? Changed forever.
Like! This is the most obvious metaphor for a parent/family that can't accept their gay kid, and by extension, their gay kids' partner. And I think it's really well executed. It hits close to home, but it feels like the person writing it gets it. Y'know. Which, given that Liz Friedman co-wrote this, tracks. She knew what the fuck she was doing here and it's so well done.
Anyway, I needed to just simply gush lightly about it. I will literally never get over the fact that this show portrays both the joys and the hardships of a lesbian relationship better than more explicit shows today. I'll never get over it!

I'm surprised nobody really noted how Xena yearns for Gabrielle especially in Season 3 and seasons after. Like this woman was so ready to ditch the whole "greater good" path for the sake of saving her dying "Friend." Gabrielle accepted she was gonna die, but Xena said "Hell No" and decided to stick it out for whatever to come. THEN, in family affair (s4 x epi 3) she was so happy and hugging Gabrielle (who was really Hope at first) that her face showed so much relief and almost wanting to cry cause she thought she lost her best friend forever. Then, the real Gabrielle showed up and she was still happy and kissed her hand as to being so relieved that Gabrielle is real and alive. Honestly, it is Lucy and Renee's chemistry that they were able to show us how Xena and Gabrielle's relationship grows overtime.
Idk I just love noticing the small things that Xena and Gabrielle do for each other and let themselves be vulnerable and often romantic with their words.

And now I’ve fallen into Xabrielle fan vids and can’t seem to stop myself from watching every single one.
Oh how quickly I just abandon everything - all other ships - when it comes to them. My first. My number 1.
I should know by now that nothing can replace them.
When you can write over 1000 words about a ship.
You know you love them more than any other.

on the topic of classic wlw anime ships, I'm still deceased over Nanoha sharing a room with Fate, including a BED, despite having a dorm of her own. the scene where she wakes up early, tucks their adopted daughter Vivo back under the covers, and is just SO THRILLED when Fate and the kid instinctively snuggle together like the soft implication that she WANTS her best friend forever and her new daughter to be a FAMILY
the way this quietly backs up Fate instantly volunteering herself as mom 2 for Vivio, how they naturally fall into the roles of Slightly Strict / Supports Independence parent (Nanoha, due to her lonely and self-sufficient but otherwise happy childhood) and the This Child Will Always Know They Are Safe And Loved And Can Come Crying To Me Whenever They Want parent (Fate, in reaction to literal child abuse from her mom and lots of research into not repeating that) balancing each other out so Vivo gets the best of both worlds
the moment when Nanoha our plucky lead who is always strong and determined and hopeful and ready to kick butt breaks down crying on Fate's shoulder bc Vivio was kidnapped and Nanoha is SCARED and you realize Fate is the only one she lets hold her like this, the only one she cries in front of, this girl Nanoha couldn't stop thinking about because of how beautiful and sad her eyes were, Fate who she helped save, who let herself be saved by her, who is her best friend, who she wants to build a family with, who promises her they will get Vivio back- And they do, they save their kid go on and get a house together, Vivio has two mothers and gets an amazing childhood with them, Fate is Nanoha's special person they never ever kiss they are COMMITTED TO EACH OTHER AND TO THEIR DAUGHTER
listen. Nanofate is like, anime Xena and Gabrielle in some ways. the word 'gay' will never ever be used for them outside of VA's shipping it and i don't care. they've made a life together. no external excuse or pressure. nothing about boys have cooties or there's no other way. no gimmick. just two grown women, raising their kid, sharing a home, being each other's 'special person' always
i still haven't seen anything else in anime like it

Xena: Warrior Princess - Dreamworker
Okay, this one was good!
This episode has some of the best quotes. “Wisdom before weapons.” – Xena “Like your breasts aren’t dangerous enough.” – Gabrielle “It may look as it did before, but it’s forever changed.” – Xena Okay, now someone has to tell me, how did that second one there get on air, and people still thought they were straight? I was not expecting to be hit with the little baby gay vibes from Gabrielle…
