wwdits 5x08 "The Roast" + nandermo moments i am totally normal about (she lied, like a liar)

laszlo fucking lied.

remembering for a second that season 5 takes place straight after season 4, laszlo is clearly grieving baby colin and using guillermo as a distraction. it is NOT a coincidence that in this episode colin mentioned dreaming about his time as baby colin and just happened to make a joke about dads and sons (using buzzwords like “boy” and “act” as well).

I think not being able to fix guillermo and, to a lesser extent, (from his perspective) having to kill guillermo’s “babies” sent laszlo into a downward spiral and he was genuinely semi-catatonic. he’s said and shown that he struggles with emotional stuff many times, and actually feeling those emotions and thinking those thoughts and having to actually confront them would definitely do weird things to him.

another thing we know about laszlo is that he is a really good liar. when he snapped out of it, saying “THAT’S IT!” he 1000% made up the book thing on the fly. but it worked because he was genuinely happy again! his distraction is back in business!!

I think he either figured out why guillermo is the way he is, how to turn him fully into a vampire, or how to turn him human again. and the colin robinson thing will build over the next two episodes, with the two still avoiding each other until the finale is an emotional confrontation between laszlo and colin about their time together, and nandor and guillermo about… well, you know.

anyway yeah matt berry is a fucking good actor and I know this is a comedy but that was not “figuring out how to alphabetise my books” that was “grappling with raising and losing a son who now doesn’t remember me but I have to live with him every day and also the not-coping mechanism I’ve found to distract myself from my pain has stopped working and also I am a centuries old vampire who cannot deal with crushing human emotions”. or you know something like that

The thing that really drives me insane (today) is that Nandor had to have actually gone to dig out one of Guillermo's sweaters from his room to use as a security blanket in The Roast. Like. In the midst of everything happening and all the waiting and not knowing where Guillermo was, he went to Guillermo's room and found a sweater so he could carry it around with him and clutch it to make himself feel better.

whatever you do don't think about 20 year old Guillermo looking at this cool centuries old vampire who gave him a chance to finally become one too one day, with stars in his eyes and giving him a card thanking him because being a vampire is his dream and telling him that being his familar will be an honour

The Guide is just passive aggressively going after every member of the house now. Good for her.

FINALLY SEEN THE NEW WWDITS.. GIRL WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT

my incoherent thoughts on wwdits season 5 episode 8 and a general reflection of the season thus far:

godddd I love the baron he's my fav side character doug jones does an amazing performance-- just the pure vampire camp energy exuded is perfect

this recent episode is probably my favorite this season. just the emotionssss and we get to see the payoff on how nandor and nadja have become so attached to guillermo. the note scene proves nandor has been so down bad all this time but he's a stupid idiot who struggles to express himself outside of joking around unless things get really dire (which they do in this ep, at least for nandor). he puts his full trust in guillermo. he's his body guard, his best man, his friend.

and on guillermo's side, he's wanted to be a vampire for at least 13 years. he's served nandor because he admires him on some level all these years. i think he became a vampire partly to become full equals with nandor. but his hasty decision means that he can't be real with nandor where it really matters. the little talk between him and the baron was just so interesting and sweet and sad, because he's painted himself into a corner with his secret. the baron speaks softly (with a morbid honesty unique to vampires lol) to guillermo and advises him. this is probably mostly due to the baron learning guillermo has turned, but the episode makes the point that the baron has softened quite a bit. he's taking eternity as it comes, which is a beautiful little character beat I love. sometimes a family is a crispy bloodthirsty baron, the very first vampire older than sin itself, a fire breathing puppy, and a dozen amphibian monstrosities. or: a killer girlboss with a silly side, her horny scientist husband, the dumbest guy you will ever meet, the creature that crawled out of the abdominal cavity of Colin Robinson, and a dorky familiar-turned cool bodyguard-turned dorky vampire (+the Guide, sorry girl).

I think the overall idea of the season is in how vampires fit into eternity and society. the answer: they do pretty much what humans do. they build community, they protect their own, they freak out about the little stuff, and they have fun where they can. the found family is strong this season, and I love it for it. The basic structure is somewhat present in previous seasons, but guillermo feels truly included in the dynamic here. along with this, colin is pushed less to the sidelines by the other vampires (i imagine his 'death' gave them some perspective on how they in truth appreciate his presence in their lives). nadja and lazlow protect guillermo's secret (and therefore his life) while colin and nandor protect each other in ep 6. nandor and nadja protect guillermo from being killed by the baron in ep 8.

while this season hasn't personally been the most consistently funny to me, I think wwdits has really hit its stride with storytelling mixed with comedy. this could all be deconstructed in the finale for all I know, but im quite excited to see where this season takes its last two episodes. im most interested where the story will take nadja's hex, the guide's seclusion from the group, any possible remnants of colin's childhood memory, laszlo's experimentation, guillermo's turning, and, of course, nandor's reaction to that.

THE SCARED AND RELIEF IN HIS FACE WHEN HE SAW THAT THE BODY WAS NOT HIM

THE WAY HE TOUCHED THE JUMPER AND NEVER LET IT GO BECAUSE OF THE FEAR HE HAD

The way he say good bye and hope that Guillermo was okay because maybe he will never see him again and then the fucking relief and love in his body when he saw him well and alive

THE NEED TO KNOW THAT HE WAS HIS GUILLERMO BY ASKING PERSONAL STUFF ABOUT THEM.

THE FUCKING CARD AND THE “I didn't think you will remember that”

And finally the heartbreaking : “I know you better that anybody else”

Also notice how when laszo was talking about the books he never once looked Nadja in the eye and that's a sign of a liar
