i don’t think i actually quite realized why i didn’t love iroh until hella and the cult started pointing it out. because,, almost everyone in the fandom Loves him, and so i thought maybe i just found him boring or something as a ✨teenager✨ and wasn’t old enough to Get it. (which now, i can put more to words why i don’t love him) there ARE some things i really do like about him, but others have always been very off putting in terms of him being a favorite of mine. (namely War Crimes, the way he treats june, and while he WAS there for zuko throughout the show, he wasn’t really when it mattered most {*cough* the agni kai!!!}, and it wasn’t really the way zuko needed an adult? {in my opinion, idk})

and [ch. 28 spoilers?] but the thing you guys said about him taking away time that kanut and hakoda could’ve spent talking to zuko by just sprouting proverbs that zuko wouldn’t understand?? y e s he definitely needs to recognize that Hey This Approach Isn’t Working

okay i have a feeling this answer might get long (and not just because i have a lot of work to do and would rather sit here answering asks) but YES!

before i actually watched the show, a friend of mine compared our favorite teacher to iroh (this is actually the teacher who inspired mx. mak to anyone who reads my fic WWDA) and i was like 👀 iroh must be the best character to ever exist. and then i finally watched it and... i don’t think i watched very critically the first time because i was pretty much willing to ignore the war crimes and write the june-treatment off as ‘writers putting in a stupid joke and not actual iroh characterization’ but the more i thought about it (you know, getting into fandom and rewatching the show two more times) i just. i couldn’t believe that my friend had compared genuinely the kindest person i’ve ever known (who i specifically respect for how she pays attention to everyone, which will become relevant in a moment) to iroh? because i didn’t get into this into podcast, but the thing that frustrates me the most (well...one of the things at least) is iroh’s treatment of azula! because as i mentioned, i tend to treat the june-moment as the writers not as iroh (simply because it’s too gross and i can’t deal with it otherwise 🤢) and the war crimes aren’t great, but there was a lot of propaganda to convince him he was doing the right thing (not! an! excuse! he still should’ve thought critically, but i can see why he might not have) and i go back and forth on the agni kai (cause tbh if he’d intervened he probably would’ve just been killed, but that doesn’t mean he shouldn’t have done something else sooner) and even his poor communication with zuko, i’ve seen enough well-meaning adults do this to know it happens. but what i absolutely cannot justify (to clarify, war crimes also not justified! just not the focus of this post) is iroh’s TERRIBLE TREATMENT OF AZULA!!! the only two reasons i can see for it is: thinking a child is inherently bad/evil or being sexist. either way, not a good look for the fandom’s least-favorite-uncle. i’m going to leave it there, but if you want more thoughts, i could probably expand

and [STOP READING IF YOU DONT WANT CHAPTER 28 SPOILERS OMG]  but the way hella made up her own proverbs just to be barely-understandable to emphasize the idiocy of iroh’s approach made me both scream and cackle because just. YES. he is that fucking dumb. but i genuinely believe the big plot point that happened (that i’m not typing in case any idiots who are avoiding spoilers glance through this by accident) could’ve been avoided if zuko had talked to hakoda and/or kanut instead of iroh. (i was team no on the plot point happening, if you know what i mean. but for zuko’s sake not anyone else’s).

sorry this is long as fuck, i just have more thoughts about iroh than i thought and i haven’t been able to channel that into writing wwda (cause i’m DROWNING IN HOMEWORK that i chose to procrastinate and therefore it’s clearly not my fault) so y’all get that here instead
