idk if this is coherent or even makes sense with the lore i dont have the Entire Night Vale Mythos memorized as much as i try but i think theres something so profoundly tragic about cecil’s longevity coupled with him being consistently forced to face his own mortality . he’s constantly forced to reckon with the fact that he will someday die - his mother seems to have consistently reinforced this in him with the phobia of mirrors. he holds his own body dying in his arms. he watches his child self die in the mirror. the scene with the trees in it sticks with you has heavy light-at-the-end-of-the-tunnel imagery throughout. we can even see how this fear weighs on him with the trouble with time - when he can see that him and carlos can live together forever with kasper rhodes’s promises, he’s so euphoric he immediately runs off and loses any of his better judgment. cecil as a character is constantly held up to a mirror, literal and metaphorical, of his own mortality
but thats the thing though. mortality is only human, but cecil doesn’t get the humanity of it either. he’s already canonically been alive for centuries, unaware or unwilling to share his own timeline. the common catch of being immortal is usually that you outlive your partner - but cecil has that, despite not being immortal. he’s most certainly outlived people he’s fallen in love with since he’s literally older than his town, but he doesn’t get the release of never dying either. his death is constantly forced down his throat, but he bears the weight of hundreds of years on him too. i’m Relatively certain there’s an implication within to the friends and family that while time works in night vale it still is wrong with him?? but either way the fact that he’s stuck in this catch 22 between immortal and mortal and is constantly having those negatives shoved in his face ......... goddamn

Carlos and I are planning to take Esteban out to see the birds this weekend. They’re supposed to be quite beautiful, with ruby red throat feathers and iridescent gills. Stay tuned for the hammering of their little beaks, ceaselessly destroying their new home. Stay tuned for a triumphant howl and the clatter of garbage cans in the street. Stay tuned next for the faint sound of analog static. Goodnight, Night Vale. Goodnight.
Episode 211 - Howl

a month of waiting for this episode and no reference at all to anything from last time 😭
unless
do we think Cecil and Carlos taking Esteban to see the birds at the end was a reference to when they took him to see the owls in "It Sticks With You"?

in a post 158 world where Kasper survived, he was definitely on Night Vale snl at least once. Mans was literally just farting around in the sandwastes for the longest time

Water Failure is one of my favorite wtnv episodes…… cecil passes out from carbon monoxide poisoning scented with french toast scent (he fully dies in my humble opinion because its funnier) and you hear the THUNK of his head hitting the table…. its so fucking funny god …the episode literally has it all, he mispronounces Michigan, we get a glimpse of what living in night vale is like, station management howls, reference to lot 37, other employees mention at the radio station, cecil being sooooo cutie and stupid clicking through the phone menu, everything……….. dumb old man with babygirl syndrome to the MAX

Rosie's Favorite (currently finished/caught up) Podcasts:
The Amelia Project - silly, quirky, morbid but almost always more jaunty and eccentric than completely dark. Great for anyone who loves 'narrator' or interview type podcasts. If I'm not mistaken, I've posted some of my thoughts on here using the pod's hashtag.
The Mistholme Museum of Mystery, Morbitity, and Mortality - another narrator type podcast, and probably my favorite of all time. The main voice you hear is perfect imo and keeps you engaged in all the right ways, bringing tension where it's needed, and levity where it's funny or odd. Absolutely consumed this podcast with a voraciousness I haven't felt for a bit. Keeps you guessing and always wanting more from every exhibit.
Victoriocity - excellent voice acting, interesting and unique premise and setting, and great plot. One of the podcasts I'm most looking forward to returning :) think steam punk but also it's the 1800s still in weird ways. If you love an old timey British accent, you'll love this haha.
The White Vault - probably my favorite specifically horror podcast, that makes you wait for answers in a craving sort of way, a longing to know what's going on, and not slogging through a bunch of filler to then get answers. It's great, gorey, geographically diverse fun. Interesting mashups of various cultures re: mythology, history, religion(?). Another on my list to watch out for the return of.
Midnight Burger: the quick pitch is - a time traveling diner that always services people in need, no matter what time, space, or dimension they may reside in. Excellent cast of characters, great development, wonderful implementation of a new character(s), and in general a very comfortable vibe to return to (speaking of, once I run out of recommendations I may relisten to this one). Highly recommend if you like sitcoms with time travel splashed with a bit of horror.
Edit: just finished up another one, so time to add it to the list!!
Monstrous Agonies: A radio show advice segment, about, by, and for the Creature Community. If you like WTNV, but find it a bit intense sometimes, or a bit too plot heavy/etc, you'll absolutely love this. Instead of the whole show, you just get the advice segment, but oh ho ho, is it so much more than that. If you're queer, BIMPOC, from a blended/mixed/broken/anything but 'typical' home... I think you'll like it. Very much what I would call 'easy listening', meaning you can just ease into an episode without having to remember a huge cast of characters, a plots b plots C plots meta plots... And it just feels *real*, in that strange and beautiful way WTNV does, but instead of a fictional town, the setting is the real world, with real problems, and real solutions. Sometimes you really do just need to howl or cry or chew on some slippers and that's OK. Highly recommend for ADHD havers or anyone with a short attention span who loves a soothing voice.
Edit: Another absolute banger to add to the list
Wooden Overcoats - how do I even properly describe the experience of this podcast. Let's start with the basics: It's the story of twins who run a funeral parlor on a small island, in a small village. Their family has been running said parlor for hundreds of years, as the only funeral directors on the island. Until one day... They aren't. A man arrives and sets up his own funeral parlor directly across the square, and boy, do things change for those twins. If you've listened to (and loved) Victoriocity, or The Amelia Project, I guarantee you'll enjoy this one. Strange, silly, and interesting things are always happening, except this one doesn't have quite as much drama (well...... Perhaps a different kind of drama. I'd call this an interpersonal dramedy, with emphasis on the comedy). An incredible listen, through and through. I thoroughly enjoyed every single episode, and the ending was quite safisfying :)
Another EXCELLENT addition to this ever increasing list of content!!! I'm not even finished with this one, I just love it so much that I can't help but add it to the list:
Mission Rejected - you know in those spy movies, where the spy gets a secret message from HQ and they say 'your mission, if you choose to accept it...' ok great. Now imagine if 007 said 'no'. This is the story about the backups, the team that takes the missions rejected by the Top Spy Guy. It's got diverse voice acting (in many senses of the word - you can tell the voices apart, it's not exclusively straight cis white dudes, etc etc), wonderful worldbuilding, great pacing, an excellent plot, I really could go on and on. I highly recommend this specific podcast to anyone who wants something light to get deeply invested in, that has a lot of comedy but also develops the characters outside of just their bits. 100/10 no notes
Edit: not sure which podcast/podcast enthusiast rb'ed this yesterday but I'm so glad more folks get to see this list!!! It makes me so happy that lots of folks enjoy this list, a d share their fave ones, and!!!! Aaaggghhhhhhhhh!!! I love podcasts and podcast enthusiasts!!!!!
Also I have another one for yall :3 if you're looking for another improv comedy to add to your list!!!
Hey Riddle Riddle - exactly what you think it is, but also so much more. Three friends/coworkers who also happen to be sensational improv comedians solve riddles and puzzles together, while also introducing bits and skits and reoccurring segments, so it never feels like 'just a Riddle podcast' (whatever that means). I have laughed every single episode, which is a big deal for me (some comedy podcasts only make me laugh every few episodes, and I require at LEAST one laugh per episode). I can genuinely say this is one of the funniest podcasts I've ever listened to, and the absolute best improv I've ever heard. I'm all for committing to the bit, and this one absolutely delivers on both the commitment part and the bit part haha. Seriously can't recommend this one enough if you maybe listen to a lot of drama/horror and need something easy to listen to (easy meaning there's not a plot you have to be intensely listening for, you can just enjoy it casually). 1000/10, please listen and also tell me YOUR favorite riddles :)

People of tumblr may I present to you the
Fictional Cat Showdown
(it's orange because cats)
(inspired by oh so many other competitions like @bisexual-monarch-tournament, @aroaceswagcompetition, @weirdgirlshowdown, @transgenderswagcompetition, @the-best-fictional-turtle and so many more)
I have looked around and decided that tumblr has been having an abysmal lack of cats. So I come here to give you a chance to pin your favourite fictional cat blorbos against each other. Maybe they will fight to death. Maybe they will cuddle and fall asleep. Maybe they will adopt each other. The only way to find out is to make this an event of a lifetime!
The only cat I have granted automatic entry is Baron Humbert von Gikkingen from The Cat Returns specifically (although his first appearance in I don't remember what other movie is still valid) because I can and he's my crush. So, the rest of the bracket is up to you! Yes, you specifically! Get your fav cats out there!!
Read the guidelines below and submit your cats here!!!
[Edit: submissions closed, stay tuned for the brackets!!!]
Now, what constitutes a fictional cat?
Don't give me just regular hoomans with decorative cat ears! They need to have actual feline features to qualify! They can be furry/anthro, sure. Or just a regular cat! Or a robot! Or a canonical alternate universe cat version of a human character! Ideally they need to have more cat-like features than just ye olde cute cat ears given to them for the sake of a design choice. But if it's a human with functioning cat features... They do qualify (Catra is too obvious so let's take Leona from Twisted Wonderland as an example here). Also humans that can turn into cats or vice versa are eligible, BUT they should have spent a considerable amount of plot time in the narrative as a cat, not just this five minute episode once and never speak about it again (so, Cat!Sophie from Castle in the Air would qualify, because, you know, she spent most of the book as a cat AND gave birth to a kitten, and Howl doesn't count, because he only ever turned into a wet cat for three seconds to escape the Witch). And last but not least, it can be cat-shaped while not being a cat per se (e.g. Puppycat). Or something that is a very questionable yet still cat (like Khoshekh from WTNV who was called a cat despite having uh very few cat features judging by his description and a lot more creepy weird things)
Oh, and also it doesn't have to be a house cat. Any feline is good. You can give me lions if you want.
Anyway, just submit your cats and I'll figure it out from there!
The poll will be up for about a week, so till Saturday February 18. If this suddenly gets traction (which I hope it does!!! cats are great!!!) and gets plenty of suggestions I will be closing it earlier, so stay tuned and hurry up to submit ye cats! 😺

hellooooo tagged by @delladucker !!!<3 yes it took me two weeks to remember and finish this don't worry about it
how many fics do you have on ao3?
- currently 10
what's your total ao3 word count?
- 52,149..... when did that happen
what fandoms do you write for?
- currently usually ducktales of course but I still mess around in my howl's castle series drafts every once in awhile. everything else is from when I was afflicted with being 14 and doesn't count
what are your top five fics by kudos?
- "giving off sparks" which I did not put much effort into but I guess the people needed more Castle in the Air content
- the singular thing that survived the post-tma purge, that michael mcfuckhands thing, which is allowed to remain simply bc it was a little funny
- "wednesday morning 3am" - yeahhhHHhHhHh
- "after changes upon changes" - I will never forget the day I found out there was a secret sixth verse to the boxer and I think I may have ascended. anyway yeah this one was cute
- "prodigal" yea
do you respond to comments? why or why not?
- I try to but I'm shy and my brain is made out of spaghetti and pop rocks so if you left one and I didn't respond. <3.
what's the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
- in general? probably one wtnv fic from the Bad Times (freshman year). attached to my ao3 probably "a home she could not keep" I have thoughts about Goldie o Gilt
what's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
- OUVGHGR idk I think that kind of depends on your definition of happy ending..... wednesday morning is cute changes upon changes is cute prodigal I definitely was writing the end like "this is so silly and sappy. POST!" but like idk I'm largely tired with pointless angst personally. like I'm okay with things sucking really bad for our heroes in the middle but ending a story on an upward trajectory is important to me when I'm writing
do you get hate on your fics?
- sometimes people say weird stuff about della in my comments and it makes me mad because she is just some guy
do you write smut?
- no I'd rather lock my barbies in the house and then shake it and yell EARTHQUAKE than make them kiss or heaven forbid.... anyway I have more important things to be doing personally
do you write crossovers? what's the craziest one you've ever written?
- no I do like the occasional silly au though like the howl pendragon/ben suliman/sophie hatter Vicious au which appealed to exactly two people and never saw the light of day
have you ever had a fic stolen?
- no can you imagine if someone broke into ur house and then stole only a spiral notebook full of crayon drawings and disney stickers. it would be like that to me and it would be so funny
have you ever had a fic translated?
no that would be sick
have you ever cowritten a fic before?
no but there was a time when ex wife and I were co brainstorming so hard it may well have been cowriting if you squinted
what's your all time favorite ship?
- howl and sophie jenkins-pendragon-hatter........... they were holding hands and smiling and smiling quite unable to stop....... I gotta take a walk
what's a wip you want to finish, but doubt you ever will?
- hallmark chronic illness sophie hatter christmas..... also I just found a document that's five sentences of Benjamin Chang actually stuck in a time loop in s6e1. cool
what are your writing strengths?
- I completely blanked because I think I suck at everything so I phoned a friend and asked my ex wife and he said "your writing strengths are themes and motifs and also sick ass metaphors" Thank you ex wife
what are your writing weaknesses?
- actually writing
thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?
- ummmm like I've written some stuff in French before because I'm proficient in it but I always heavily double check everything I've written so idk. I keep it to a couple lines at maximum because I'm not super comfortable with it
first fandom you wrote for?
- there isn't a way to answer this that isn't incredibly embarrassing so I guess that time I wrote a self insert character who was kind of weird and not like anybody else and got sorted into ravenclaw (I was eleven)
favorite fic you've ever written?
- oh how to choose! if I've posted it in the last two years I like it. I reread prodigal the most and people seemed to like it a lot but whenever I reread Wednesday Morning 3AM I'm like wait this rocks. wed3am is like my eldest daughter carved immaculately from marble that I forget exists and prodigal is the son I worship despite his formatting errors (they are part of the charm I'm not fixing them. I'm too stubborn)
