Writing Protip #001
There are many different elements when writing any type of story. From biographies to fantasy or non-fiction to fiction, you’ll need to know your characters. Characterization gives the writer and reader a personal connection to each character; whether it be a main character who’s in the whole story or a minor character who’s in the story for one chapter. Character charts are great ways to get to know your character. You can either use pre-made charts or you can take questions from different charts and make your own chart or questionnaire. Whatever genre of book you write you’ll need to know the personality, looks, and quirks of the person/character you’re writing about. Characters are like us, they don’t all have the same personality, so in your book don’t give everyone the same personality or looks as it’ll be boring. Remember to add flaws to your characters, perfect people don’t exist and perfect, heroic, and flawless characters are boring and unrealistic. Just remember characterization is just as important as the content and story line of your book/story. With complex and well thought out characters, your reader will be able to choose who they like and don’t like. You can also throw a character I like to call a Snape; basically make a character everyone feels is bad and turn them into a good guy, as the queen herself, Miss. J.K. Rowling, did with Severus Snape. Happy Writing! xx
