I feel like TUMOASD is a one-read fic.

By that, I mean that it can only really be enjoyed whilst reading once.

You don’t know the ending. Everything is funny, You don’t know why everything is like this, it’s just a nice crackfic superhero-vigilante found family SBI and benchtrio fic.

SPOILER WARNINGS:

But then you get to the Symphony chapters.

You know what’s going on now, the background, the reasonings behind everything. And now that you have the answer, you know exactly what’s actually going on while rereading it.

And it sort of spoils it, because you can’t forget the haunted reason behind Tommy’s world.

It’s like the Ghibli movie When Marnie Was There.

ONCE AGAIN, SPOILER WARNINGS:

It’s basically a story about a girl called Anna who moves to a coastal town to help her asthma. She meets a girl called Marnie whom lives in a strict household, a mansion overlooking the sea. There’s some weird things about her and her house, but Anna’s okay with it.

As the story progresses, it becomes stranger, like TUMOASD. Things become out of hand, things begin to make less and less sense.

Until the end.

We found that there’s actually a war going on, and that Tommy made the entire world we just read in his mind to cope with his and his family’s deaths. As enelii said themselves, “so it starts with tommy dying, that’s the first scene and we (you lmao not me) believe that tommy is saved. what actually happened was that tommy created a… limbo, for lack of better words. as the title says ‘tommyinnit’s unbeatable method of avoiding sudden death’ - tommy is unable to cope with his death and his families, because of how sudden it was, so his coping mechanism is essentially creating a limbo where he’s in control and everything is how he wants it to be, or well, close. so tommy creates a world that is similar to the cartoons he watched. hence why each chapter has an episodic tone to it, with a beginning, middle and end. hence the catchphrases and things that just wouldn’t make sense outside of a make belief world. “

We found out that Marnie is actually Anna’s grandmother, who lived in the coastal mansion 50 years ago and died a few years earlier then the story’s time. As Wikipedia said, “She (Anna’s adoptive mother) gives Anna a photograph of the mansion and says it belonged to Anna's grandmother. When Anna sees Marnie's name written on the back, she realizes that she is Emily's daughter and Marnie's granddaughter. This revelation brings closure about her identity.”

It’s big plot twists.

They catch us by surprise, and once we learn, it’s engraved in our minds when we reread/rewatch the movie/fic. We know what happens, we know the plot twist. It slightly ruins it.

It’s why I’ve only read/watched both of these twice.

Once for the first time, and again to see all the parts where the plot twist could apply.

Then it’s basically ruined for me.

TUMOASD is a one-read fic to enjoy.

i love your work with the Ghibli stills! Are you planning to put together stills from The Boy and The Heron when it eventually comes out on digital?

Thanks! I've got no current plans for The Boy and the Heron. My current plan is to finish the project by finishing When Marnie Was There, since this whole thing has ended up taking a lot longer than I originally anticipated, and I'd like to be done with it and get closure. That said, after I'm done and I've watched BatH, I can always decide to capture stills for it if I feel like it. All I can promise is to try and keep an open mind, but I wouldn't expect anything, because as I say, I'm currently planning to stop with WMWT.

The fanficification of books is one thing, but it's really annoying when they have to pretend like they're not fanfic or even weirder pretend that they're inspired by something else. Like just came across this

Yeah no I see how it's somewhat similar but you didn't call it Ericvision did you. Am I going madder than usual? It's obvious right? Bitches always say they want Ghibli vibes and they always mean catbus and soot sprites and never the fucked up sub-subtext of WMWT.
